Australia today is one of the leading countries in the fields associated with the mineral industry, an industry which accounts for over 50% of overseas income and revenue to government. This is no accident. In order to be competitive in what was recog- nised very early in the country's history as a highly profitable busi- ness, the Australian mineral industry (mining, extractive and refining metallurgy) has traditionally been very innovation con- scious, a characteristic which has been evident from the begin- ning of the industry or very nearly so: Australia's geographic isolation and the dispersion of the mineral industry over wide distances made an exchange of ideas difficult and often impossible. One needs only to look at the inaugural address given by Sir Henry Ayers, the first president of the then Australasian Insti- tute of Mining Engineers, in Adelaide on 4th April, 1892 (1) "There is probably no other pursuit which depends more on its productive development and profitable results than in the extent and application of the scientific and mechanical knowledge possessed and exercised by its manager." and "Having in view the value of the mining industry of Austral- asians, they should be urged to apply their best skill with all the scientific and mechanical knowledge obtainable to its future development."

Major ions, d18O and d2H and Carbon-13 concentrations in groundwater from 30 bores near an open pit iron ore mine were used to better understand the chemical evolution of groundwater in the aquifer. The relatively depleted d18O and d2H isotopes of groundwater from various depths suggest that groundwater is recharged from intense rainfall events, with little evaporative effect. The 300 to 500 mg/L increase of major ions relative to that of rainfall is due to evapotranspiration of rainfall during recharge. Geochemical mass balance modelling suggests that the evapotranspiration of rainfall during infiltration through the unsaturated zone varies over six fold from 20 to 130. This coupled with the dissolution of CO2 from the unsaturated zone and partial dissolution of carbonates and gypsum from Tertiary sediments and carbonates from the Wittenoom Formation accounts for the current major ion, d18O and d2H distribution in groundwater. Despite the relatively dissected morphology and steep hydraulic gradient the results of this study highlight the dominance of vertical flow relative to horizontal flow. The study also shows the dominance of rapid recharge by significant rainfall events as an important component of the water budget for east Pilbara aquifers.

This paper discusses the key issues in Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis including the importance of data verification and the shortcomings in DCF analysis. Stockmarket valuation measures and valuation methodology for exploration and pre development projects are examined through examples and pitfalls are identified. The use of valuations in corporate transactions and their strategic value is also discussed.

The application of high technology to monitor and control fire life safety, critical functionality in tunnels and underground spaces generally has progressed at an ever accelerating rate over the past decade. Today these systems comprise some of the most complex and little understood aspects of the tunnel/underground facility construction industry, with this area being perceived as high risk comprising impenetrably complex ‘black box’ technology covered in blinking LEDs. This paper will seek to explode some urban myths and common misconceptions associated with such systems, providing its intended audience with a review of what all this technology comprises and where the real risks lie in its delivery lie.The author contends (and looks to support such contention via this paper) that by applying baseline project and risk management processes to the procurement of this widely misunderstood black box technology, the quality of the final outcome can be much improved, driving innovation, reducing both cost and significantly mitigating delivery risk.CITATION:Taylor, G M, 2014. This paper is based upon the experiences of collaborating academics in two mining schools and their personal view of attempts to integrate the principles of sustainable development into mining education and research. In this quest, the concept of sustainable mining practices is proposed, not only relating to environmental, social and economic performance but also stressing mine safety and efficiency. These practices need to support strategies that enable flexibility and resilience within mine operations to counter recessionary cycles. Also, these counter-cyclical strategies are now imperative for sustaining mining education and research itself. There is a critical interdependence between these two different perspectives on æsustainabilityÆ. The paper concludes by demonstrating models of strategies that promote inter-disciplinarity, collaboration and networking for sustaining mining schools.

Mining is still a significant economic activity within the Hauraki District. The Martha project is particularly significant. Estimates are that in the order of 850 direct and indirect jobs are derived as a consequence of the Martha project within the Waikato Region. The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) is New Zealand's primary piece of environmental legislation. It sets out to provide the framework for the control of the use, development and protection of almost all physical and natural resources. Minerals are excluded from the sustainability requirements of the legislation but as mining invariably involves the use of land, all the other elements of RMA apply. The Council's role in dealing with mining changed with the introduction of RMA. It became responsible for administration of those matters that fell within the functions set out in section 31 of the RMA in respect to existing authorisations. Mineral development needed to be considered in the development of the District Plan that the Council is required to prepare. Implementation of the Act has been a challenge for not only local government but for many industries and resource users since it came into force in 1991. There have been, and are, differing views on both the way it is administered and its intent. The Hauraki District Council has been at the forefront of some of the challenges that are a consequence of the Act. Its reactions to these challenges have been consistent. It treats mining in the same why it treats any other industry. At times this approach has not been understood and without challenge from sections of the community.

The McArthur, Balma (new name) and Habgood Groups are thick (up to 4.5 km) correlative sequences of shallow water evaporitic carbonates, mudstones and sandstones that are exposed largely within the Batten, and southern and northern Walker Fault Zones (Batten and Walker Troughs) of the McArthur Basin respectively. Recent re-mapping of the Walker Fault Zone has provided data for refined stratigraphic correlations between these groups. Two significant hiatuses are now recognised within the Balma Group (base of Vaughton Siltstone and base of Yarrawirrie Formation) and these may represent tectonically-generated sequence boundaries which may correlate with similar local hiatuses within the McArthur Group such as at the base of the Teena Dolomite and Lynott Formation respectively.

The Ok Tedi copper and gold mining project is located in the headwaters of the Fly River system in western Papua New Guinea. The project's Feasibility Study was completed in 1979, and in- cluded a preliminary environmental assessment and an environ- mental management program. Construction commenced in 1981, an environmental impact study was completed in 1982, mining and treatment of gold ore commenced in 1984, staged construction of copper ore processing facilities took place during 1986-1988, and a further major environmental study was carried out for the operat- ing mine during 1986-1989. A very considerable data base of environmental information has been assembled by means of a comprehensive monitoring program. Environmental management criteria applied to the Project have reflected the stages and nature of development and operation. Criteria have been designed to regulate potential environmental impacts in the Fly River. An Acceptable Particulate Level of suspended sediment is the principal criterion. Compliance is con- ditional upon -a limited reduction in fish biomass, and upon dis- solved and particulate copper concentrations not exceeding predicted values at various locations throughout the river system. The criteria were established by the Government of Papua New Guinea following evaluation of environmental studies undertaken by the mining company. Compliance is checked by a detailed monitoring program, frequent reporting and statistical evaluation of monitoring results.

The main iron ore deposits of Western Australia fall into three very different geological classes, which are, in order of importance: hematite enrichment ore, pisolitic limonite ore, and sedimentary ore. These are presently (1973) being mined in the approximate proportions 20 : 2 : 1, while the equivalent proportions for reserves are, very approximately, 200 : 70 : 1. Two minor categories which mar- ginally qualify as ore are detrital material variously referred to as scree ore or canga, and potentially beneficiable iron formation. These two latter types are dealt with very briefly, and the three main categories are dis- cussed in order of economic significance. Hematite enrichment ore results from the selective replacement of a pre-existing host rock by hematite. Almost without exception, this host is cherty banded iron formation (BIF); but certain exceptions have great genetic inter- est. Ore bodies of this kind occur both in the Archaean BIFs of the Pilbara and Yilgarn Blocks and in the Proterozoic BIFs of'the Hamersley Basin. It follows from their virtual restriction to a single kind of sedimentary host that there is strong stratigraphic control over the shape of ore bodies: these may be almost flat, of dyke-like form, or of complex configuration, according to the pre-enrichment structure of the host bed. It has become increasingly clear in recent years that human kind has developed the capacity to alter the environment of the Earth on a global scale. The changes are often subtle. This is particularly true in the case of stratospheric ozone. Ozone is produced primarily in the stratosphere, at altitudes in excess of 20 km, initially through the action of ultraviolet sunlight dissociating molecular oxygen. According to theory as it existed up to a few years ago, ozone is removed mainly by reaction with atomic oxygen. In the unperturbed environment, this reaction proceeds both directly, and by paths catalyzed by trace quantities of nitrogen radicals. Molina and Rowland [Nature, 249, 810, 1974] pointed out that decomposition of industrial chloroflurocarbons could in-troduce an additional source of radicals to the strato-sphere. Chlorine radicals are even more efficient than nitrogen in catalyzing recombination of oxygen atoms with ozone; models suggested that we might expect reductions in the vertical column density of ozone of as much as a few per cent over the next several decades. A reduction in ozone of x¦/a, by increasing the flux of ultraviolet sunlight reaching the surface, was predicted to result in an increase of about 2x% in the number of cases of skin cancer, with other less well defined impacts on the non-human environment for life.

The Bowen Basin of Queensland and the Hunter Valley of New South Wales are the two largest black coal producing areas in Australia. Mining activities require the availability of large on-lease storages for water and tailings. The legislative framework for the regulation of large dams is slightly different between the states. The paper provides a broad outline of the regulatory framework in each state, with particular reference to Queensland and New South Wales. In New South Wales, water storages and tailings dams are treated similarly by the regulator. Under the Queensland Water Act 2000, now proclaimed, referable dams are restricted to water supply dams the failure of which involves population at risk downstream. Tailings dams are excluded, being deemed hazardous waste dams regulated under the Environment Protection Act 1994. These storage facilities are required to include a ædesign storage allowanceÆ so that the possibility of spillway discharges is minimised. New South Wales is moving toward this requirement. A curious anomaly is emerging in Queensland: the legislative definition of hazardous waste û material resulting from the processing of minerals û does not extend to coal tailings since coal is not included in the definition of a mineral. The paper explores this and other ramifications for mining operations of the new legislation as well as general trends in criteria affecting the cost of providing water and tailings storages.

BioLix is the term for a new class of biologically-derived lixiviants for precious metals (gold and silver) recovery. BioLix can be used as an alternative to cyanide on virgin and spent ores. The BioLix process is based on inducing microbial enzymatic reactions that generate organo-lixiviant chemicals. The bioprocess involves a two-stage culture strategy. First, specialty microorganisms are cultured to generate a high biomass. Then, a food-grade quality amendment is introduced that forces the microorganisms to produce the organo-lixiviant. The second-stage culture is applied to the ore where the microbial/lixiviant system acts on mineral surfaces to extract precious metals. The process operates at ambient temperatures and near neutral pH. This paper will examine the BioLix process through an extensive laboratory development and demonstration project. Laboratory development consisted of identifying and isolating specialty microorganisms and inducing agents for the production of the organo-lixiviant solutions. A demonstration was performed on low-grade and high-grade oxidised ore from the Buffalo Valley mine in Nevada, USA. Results indicate that the BioLix process was comparable to cyanide in terms of gold recovery and operated at near neutral pH and ambient temperatures. Applications for the BioLix process will be discussed including spent-ore re-leaching, cyanide replacement for virgin ore, and in situ mining.

The Middle Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup contain important metallic mineral deposits like the diagenetic sediment-hosted stratiform copper mineralization, including the Troy (Spar Lake) deposit and the epigenetic hydrothermal veins in the lower Belt and Ravalli Group in the Coeur d'Alene district. Magnetite (Fe3O4) is a common and widespread accessory mineral in these rocks and can have multiple origins including ore stage in deposits, mobilization stage in source rocks, metamorphism of red beds and alteration mineral in thin halos enveloping Ag-rich veins in the Coeur dÆAlene district. As shown in several classic studies, the composition of magnetite from igneous rocks varies significantly in response to controlling factors such as melt composition, temperature, silica activity, and oxygen and sulphur fugacity. Therefore, the distinctively different geologic settings within the Belt Supergroup strongly suggest that there may be differences in the magnetite compositions. However, initial microprobe analyses detected no variation in magnetite composition.   Three possibilities may give an adequate explanation for these initial results: 1.      the magnetite formed primarily as pure Fe3O4, 2.      one or more tectonothermal events led to regional scale re-equilibration that affected all rocks in the field area, and 3.      the variations in the composition are below the detection limit of the microprobe.

The regeneration of the ceramic filter medium used in iron ore dewatering is often done by combining backwashing, ultrasonic cleaning and chemical regeneration. Of these three, the first two are applied more frequently, whereas chemical regeneration is done only when needed, eg once a day. Chemical regeneration of the ceramic filter medium in iron ore processing can involve the use of oxalic acid to dissolve the iron oxide particles. Even while performing simple chemical regeneration, meaning no ultrasound to assist the cleaning, the changes in the performance and in the structure of the filter medium could not be explained solely based on the dissolution or the removal of particles from the surface. Good regeneration results were obtained at 35 and 50¦C, meaning that the final permeability of the filter medium corresponded to that of unused filter medium. Permeability of the medium after regeneration at 15¦C was also good after 12 h, but did fall short of those regenerated at higher temperatures. Australia is well endowed with both tin and tungsten resources, and is currently a significant producer of both commodities for the international market. The intensity of exploration activity for both metals has been rather sporadic, reflecting the changing market situation. Thus tin has experienced three major boom periods around 1880, 1907 and 1983, while tungsten prices peaked around 1917, 1953, 1970 and 1977. During the earlier periods, the major discoveries were located utilising simple prospecting techniques involving creek travers- ing and stream sediment panning. The resulting location of tin alluvials quickly led to the discovery of adjacent primary deposits. The major tungsten deposits were composed of quartz- wolframite, which was readily visible as mineralised float both within the drainage systems and on scree slopes. Thus by the early 1900s most of the currently significant deposits had been located. More recent exploration approaches have combined these tradi- tional methods with the development of exploration models based on evolving genetic concepts. Within tin systems the emergence of province styles of clas- sification combined with enhanced perceptions of tonnage-grade characteristics and improved geological models has enabled more effective exploration strategies. Province classification at the inter- national scale demonstrated a clear relationship between deposit type and geological environment and thus considerable attention was given to the range of provinces present within Australia. Tonnage-grade diagrams enabled the refinement of economic per- spectives, while detailed models provided the basis for localised search parameters.

HORWOOD wrote: In view of the difficulty of obtaining accurate results when using plumb lines in shafts, owing to the effect of currents of air, the writer, over M years ago, devised a method of transferring oearings from the surface to, the underground workings independently of plumb lines.An attachment was procured for the theodolite consisting of a 45° prism enabling a view of a fine line stretched across the shaft at the surface to be observed from the bottom of the shaft. The instrument was set up in such a position that.a view of the portion of the surface line could be obtained as close as possible to the shaft timbers.By candle light signals an assistant at the surface moved his line so that the portion close to the side or end of the shaft coincided with the cross wires of the theodolite. The theodolite was then swung to enable the crosswires to traverse the surface line. It was a simple matter to transfer the bearing of the surface line to points in the drive extending from the shaft. Similarly the relation of the bearing of the surface line to the shaft, with which a connection was intended, was easily obtained.The success of this method was demonstrated at Broken Hill in making connections many hundreds of feet from the shafts from which these were driven.

Modern technology and the need for published results have created the tendency for exploration to concentrate on drilling and assaying rather than building a broader geological understanding. Though grade is vitally important to a resource estimate, density and volume are also very important aspects that require equal consideration. Wet tropical nickel laterites are developed in humid environments over ultramafic bedrock where the nickel and cobalt are enriched to economic levels by weathering, leaching and supergene processes. These laterites often occur over rugged terrain at higher elevations where there is sufficient rain and stability for the long lateritisation process to occur. For nickel laterite profiles, the variable terrain and significant material type changes within the relatively thin profile make density and particularly volume estimation, just as significant as grade in resource estimation and assessment of resource risk. Drilling alone is generally not a cost-effective way to reduce the risk in laterite volume estimation to acceptable levels. Surface geological mapping, high resolution topographic data and other information such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) can be used very effectively to improve volume estimates. These data types are all differently structured, have different data density and quality and may potentially overlap. Integration of these disparate data types provide the most cost-effective approach to modelling wet tropical nickel laterite volumes and minimising risk. Increasing the strength of backfill has been the subject of much research. In the former Soviet Union most methods concentrated on the fill mixture including chemical additives, binder re-grinding, water electromagnetic activation and the use of vibration and turbulent activation. For the most part, this research has been confined to the laboratory where the results were not representative of field conditions. These methods also were directed at increasing the mass strength and were not specifically aimed at strengthening the fill where it may subsequently be exposed for instance on the side or underneath as it required for underhand cut and fill methods of mining. In the Republic of Armenia, a method of fill strengthening known as electro-activation has been adopted. The deposit it an epithermal gold deposit which to-date has been mined using underhand cut and fill with timber support. The backfill comprises cement and pumice placed in 2.5 m lifts. Central to the method of electro-activation is the placement of the electrodes in the stope in which the polarity and the electrical potential are changing during filling. The process promotes the binding of the fill layers, the bond to the side walls and to the adjacent fill. There is a significant increase in the compressive and tensile strength. The process has been used with beneficial effects on reinforced concrete and could be used in any mine utilising hardening fills.

Cyanide is a significant cost in gold processing, as well as an environmentally sensitive issue. It has been suggested that precipitation of cyanide from leach liquors as copper-iron-cyanide compounds such as Cu2Fe(CN)6 may account for part of the total cyanide consumption. This may be especially true for ores that are rich in both copper and iron minerals. Ammonia addition has been shown to decrease the cyanide consumption by copper. Cu2Fe(CN)6.xNH3 precipitates have also been postulated to form during conventional cyanide detoxification processes, using oxidants such as SO2/air, with ammonia arising as a breakdown product from the oxidation of free cyanide. The present work has examined the conditions under which such precipitates may form, particularly in gold plant process and detoxification liquors. Ammonia and pH were found to have a large effect on the extent of precipitation. The compounds that were formed were found to comprise mainly Cu2Fe(CN)6.7H2O, as well as a range of NH3-bearing variants. The stabilities of the various precipitates are important from an environmental perspective. The long-term stability of copper ferrocyanide precipitates in tailings dams may be a problem under alkaline conditions and when some free cyanide is present, elevating the measured total cyanide in solution significantly. Case studies including data from actual plants are also considered, and the importance of these effects is reaffirmed from these results.

Mine-groundwater interaction at the Pasminco Rosebery Mine (PRM), western Tasmania, deserves special attention due to the unique climate and mining environment present. High rainfall and low evapotranspiration result in an excess of water, an uncommon problem at Australian sulfide bearing mines. Research is being undertaken to delineate current subsurface fluid flows and predict future fluid flows in order to improve management after mine closure. Acid mine drainage generation is well developed in abandoned mines throughout the area. If acid mine drainage is not controlled after mine closure, significant environmental degradation could occur in the receiving waters of the Pieman River system. The study area encompasses the heavily forested Mount Black, and underlying PRM workings. Groundwater flows beneath Mount Black through a crystalline fractured rock aquifer with faults and underground mine workings observed to act as the major hydraulic conduits. Recharge is controlled by local precipitation, and the ultimate discharge is thought to be the Pieman River system, which forms the topographic low in the area. Slug tests have been used in conjunction with the mineÆs extensive geotechnical database to spatially evaluate variation in hydraulic conductivity. In fractured rock terrain associated with mining, rock quality designation data can be a useful tool in delineating areas of similar hydraulic conductivity when combined with conventional hydrogeological methods. A GIS, mine planning software, an environmental and a geological database are linked to form the input for groundwater modelling.
