The Chigirishima Smelter of Toho,Zinc Co., Ltd. is the largest independent custom lead smelter in Japan and produces about 60,000 tonnes/yr of electrolytic lead. The quantity of slag produced by blast furnace is approximately 65,000 tonnes/yr, 30,000 tonnes/yr of which is sent back to the sintering plant for mixing with lead concentrates. The remaining slag used to be piled up at the yard until the operation of the fuming plant started in July 1977. We examined the slag fuming process with the purpose of achieving: 1) Improvement of the operating results by recovering zinc and lead from blast furnace slag. The lead content in slag at Chigirishima is slightly high, because the height of blast furnace shaft is low and consequently the quantity of sinter smelted per area at tuyere level is rather large. 2) Production of a salable slag as raw material for cement by lowering zinc and lead content in slag.

Most metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from different feed stocks – sinter, lump ore and pellets. Sinter is the main iron-containing feed to the blast furnace and can constitute up to 70–85 per cent of the total ferrous burden. As sinter quality is a key element for stable blast furnace operation, the textural, chemical and physical characteristics of the sinter are very important. Two major factors that affect sinter strength are mineralogy and porosity. This study utilised optical image analysis (OIA) to characterise sinter mineralogy, and the results were compared to those obtained by manual point counting under the optical microscope.Two major mineral characteristics of iron ore sinter are the presence of primary (unreacted) and secondary (derived from melt) hematite. Standard OIA, which is based on RGB thresholding, is not able to distinguish them as they have the same reflectivity; however, primary and secondary hematite in iron ore sinter have a different morphology. The CSIRO-developed OIA software Mineral4/Recognition4 has a unique feature to identify various textures/morphologies of the same mineral. Together with other capabilities of the Mineral4/Recognition4 software, this feature was used to identify different types of hematite and silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium and other common sinter phases, such as magnetite, larnite, glass and remnant aluminosilicates.A visual comparison of the sinter mineralogy present in optical photomicrographs and that present in the mineral maps created automatically by the Mineral4 module of the CSIRO software confirmed the accuracy of the automated mineral identification.CITATION:Donskoi, E, Hapugoda, S, Lu, L, Poliakov, A, Peterson, M and Haileslassie, A, 2015. In large-scale mining, large-sized intermediate pillars, or block-pillars, are generated on the horizon or between closely located mines. These pillars are mined under high rock pressure that results from the stress concentration zones superposition from closely located working excavations. This problem becomes much more complicated if high tectonic stresses occur in the rock mass inducing a rock-burst risk situation. Mining experience gained in mining seven block-pillars at three Khibiny mines in Russia under the geomechanical situation like that described aboveÆ is discussed in detail. It has been shown how safe mine of block-pillars depends on their width, location relative to significant geological failures and uncaved rocks of the hanging wall, the order of pillar recovery, and application of special measures for rock mass stress relieving. Basing on the analysis of the mining experience and special scientific researches, the basic principles are worked-out for safe block-pillar mining under rock-burst prone conditions.

Over the past decade most, if not all participants in the resources sector have been involved in initiatives to improve margins, reduce costs and improve business profitability. In many cases the initiatives undertaken have fallen short of their stated objectives, and in some cases have resulted in the terminal decline of the underlying business. In reviewing why many such initiatives fail, a common theme of arbitrary cost reduction and a focus on minimising cost as opposed to maximising value and cashflow emerges. This paper proposes a structured process that allows mine owners and managers to develop an understanding of their cost structure and optimise production and cost outcomes from the business. The broad objective of cost optimisation is to create value by getting more out of existing and new assets by focussing on operational areas, particularly production and maintenance. The paper uses practical examples to highlight the application of cost driver trees as a mine improvement tool.

It is self evident that in many cases mining disrupts communities, however, community reaction to mining varies enormously. This is due to a whole host of factors, some physical, some financial, some political and some a direct result of the projected mining company attitude towards the community at large. Physical and political factors are increasingly being dealt with realistically and financial aspects are to a significant extent determined by profit margins. If the acceptable profit margin canÆt accommodate all necessary costs (which now includes a variety of community considerations unheard of even a decade ago), then the project is just not viable. Despite major commitments now made by many mining companies to their affected communities, corporate attitudes, and their projection, remain as the most outstanding factor in mining project development where real gains can still be made in effectively reducing social risk. This paper addresses both international and domestic experience gained in managing this aspect of mining development risk, including initiatives implemented by multilateral institutions.

Large scale rhyolitic volcanism is an important process at some convergent plate margins because it leads to chemical differentiation of the upper.-crust and is responsible for the production of long lived near surface thermal anomalies; the Taupo Volcanic Zone is.a Quaternary example. The main features of the magmatic systems-of the zone. are the existence of large high level chambers containing homogeneous silicic magma which erupt at intervals of thousands to tens of thousands of years. Geochemical work on the deposits resulting from these eruptions has shown that with few exceptions the magmas have been remarkably uniform in their . composition throughout the history of the zone although individual batches with lifespans of the order of. one hundred thousand years can be recognised by subtle differences in trace element ratios. Basalt is a rare proportion of the rocks exposed at the surface but has played a major role as a medium for heat transfer and as an end member in chemical mixing processes.

The paper re-visits an old and proven concept of winzing, a method widely used in the past to gather exploration data for accurate definition of the orebody. It is proposed to use a mobile Supersucker (a giant vacuum cleaner also known as vacuum lift), to carry out winzing activities underground. A brief description of conventional underground winzing used in the past is provided, together with a discussion on other underground bulk exploration methods used in Australia to date. Historical background, principles of the proposed system, Supersucker construction details and productivities, and benefits and advantages of the proposed system in comparison with other exploration methods, are outlined. Other relevant applications of the mobile Supersucker, including surface winzing, are also briefly discussed in the paper. With a view of using the mobile Supersucker to recover all broken ore stocks underground, included are also results of floor sampling conducted recently in the in-stope decline excavated in a coarse gold type, high-grade orebody.

Being analysed systematically, the factors influencing the production of fully-mechanised coal face have been divided into geological, mining technical, and management groups. Artificial neural network-expert systems (ANN-ES) are established to decide the influencing factorsÆ membership grade; genetic algorithm-artificial neural network (GA-ANN) are used to decide the weights; fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is used to calculate the integration indexes. Finally, the GA-ANN model is established to forecast the production of fullymechanised coal face. It is proved that the model is reliable with higher precision. The production of fully-mechanised coal face is influenced by many factors. However, some influencing factors are neglected by the traditional forecasting methods, the results of which are not precise and hardly be used as a guide for mine production and management. The relation between the production of fully-mechanised coal face and its effecting factors is analysed, and the meta-synthetic AI approaches are used to forecast the production of fully-mechanised coal face.

Designing post-mining landscapes requires quantifying the short and long-term risks. In recent years, computer based landscape evolution models (LEMs) have been used to provide insight into both erosion rates and processes (i.e. sheetwash, rill, gully erosion). An important requirement of these models is high quality model input parameter data, which includes both the surface material (i.e. soil and waste rock) and climate information. However, in many cases such data is limited and in the case of climate information, the data is often short and incomplete. Here we develop climate scenarios and examine different surface material properties using a case study at the ERA Ranger mine located in the Northern Territory, Australia Firstly we develop scenarios that represent the range of future climates that may be experienced at the site. Secondly we develop a series of plausible particle size distributions based on a large sampling exercise of the waste rock material. We then test the sensitivity of different rainfall sequences and surface materials on sediment output using a well-tested landscape evolution and sediment transport model (Hancock et al., 2017). The Australian Mineral Industry has to compete on world markets, so its mineral research has to be aware of overseas developments, it must be of world class, and it must utilise as many ideas as possible in order to solve those problems that uniquely affect Australian minerals processing. North American mineral and resource research may be taken as a guide to world government, industrial, contract, and entrepreneurial research trends and ideas. A number of interesting findings are noted that may guide Australian developments and strategies for the future, in minerals research and exploitation.

Since the initial discovery of phosphate rock resources in North West Queensland in 1966, significant changes in ownership and development direction have occurred. Initially development of the resource involved beneficiation to produce a more saleable grade of phosphate rock. However more recently development has focused on the production of a high analysis fertilizer product on the minesite. These changes have been influenced by economics, industry/government cooperation and a changing phosphate industry.

The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin & Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal. A number of standards and guidance materials currently exist to assist equipment designers. The ISO process, however, is a formal process and change often lags behind technology development. In some cases, this may result in weak or ineffective standards that need to be written in general terms to accommodate future technology developments, meaning some standards may only establish minimum requirements and not be overly helpful to equipment designers, in particular when designing for workforce diversity and inclusivity. By contrast, advisory information as issued by various mining regulatory bodies is able to respond more quickly to changes in technology. Standards do however have a safety and productivity focus providing design consistency between equipment manufacturers, a basis for auditing purposes, assistance in mining regulation and compliance, and in the development and application of safety management systems. As an example of challenges facing equipment designers, ISO3411 (2020) provides data approximating the 5th, 50th and 95th percentile of the ‘earth-moving machinery operator population’ for numerous static dimensions relevant to the design of earth-moving equipment. These data are then utilised in ISO6682 (2020) to provide recommendations regarding the location of controls. Attempting to utilise the data provided in ISO3411 (or other sources of static anthropometric data) creates further challenges for equipment designers, in that reference percentiles is problematic for design purposes. There is no ‘5th or 95th percentile operator’ as individuals vary along each dimension (Robinette and Hudson, 2006). Although dimensions have some degrees of correlation, when multiple dimensions are considered, the range of individuals which fall within a given range on all dimensions reduces substantially. For example, only about 82 per cent of individuals in a population will fall within the 5th to 95th percentile ranges for both height and weight. The more dimensions are considered, the smaller the range of people who actually ‘fit’ the description.

The Bastnäs-type magnetite-skarn-hosted rare earth element (REE) mineralisations are located in the Palaeoproterozoic Bergslagen ore province, central Sweden, and occur along a ca 100 km long belt of 1.90–1.87 Ga metavolcanosedimentary rocks. Ten different Bastnäs-type deposits have been sampled in order to assess the origin of ore-forming fluids in these systems. Magnetite and quartz have d18O values ranging from -2.3 to +1.1‰ and +7.2 to +8.3‰ respectively. Mineralised carbonates have d18O values between +5.8 and +7.2‰ and d13C values between -5.4 and -3.3‰. Temperature calculations based on the O-isotope composition of mineral pairs, combined with available fluid inclusion data, suggest primary mineralisation at ca 650–400°C. For these temperatures, calculated equilibrium fluids have d18O values that range from those typical of magmatic fluids (+6 to +8‰) to lower values (down to +3‰). Variation in carbonate O and C isotope data are consistent with interaction between local Palaeoproterozoic carbonate rocks (d18O = +12.5 to +19.6‰ and d13C = -1.8 to +1.7‰) and fluids of a magmatic origin. It is suggested that the Bastnäs-type REE-magnetite mineralisations formed as a result of reactions between local carbonate units and high-temperature, magmatic-dominated hydrothermal fluids during 1.90–1.87 Ga (Svecofennian) syn-volcanic activity.CITATION:Sahlström, F, Jonsson, E, Högdahl, K, Harris, C, Troll, V R and Jolis, E M, 2015. Information is a key ingredient for successful mineral exploration and development. Whether identifying potential exploration localities from a map, interpreting technical reports or searching a register for operators past and present, the common aim is a parcel of information from which the enquirer can make a decision. Traditional information gathering often requires days or weeks of manual research, studying maps, files, reports etc, before consolidating the results into an investment proposal. In recent times, such methods have largely been replaced by Information Technology, making the process much faster, easier and more centralised. However, notwithstanding some very successful technology implementations, the general rush to computerise everything in sight has left many organisations struggling to cope with the management of large volumes of diverse information. Information management is now recognised as the most important factor in determining the success of information technology implementation. The Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has established a detailed information management strategy to underpin the rapid advance of computer technology within the organisation. A broad base of timely and reliable information is gradually becoming more accessible. It is envisaged that the availability of combined spatial, textual and scientific information will provide a sound basis for decision-making within the Department and the mining industry at large. Although information held by DME will be available at all times (24 hours on-line), its security and confidentiality will be guaranteed. The production of the DME system is aimed at satisfying the corporate objective to facilitate and promote mineral exploration and development. This paper outlines some current developments in the system.

A mining operation can be identified as demonstrating prudent management when a number of vital characteristics are evident.All risks and opportunities that are critical to the on-going success of the operation have been identified and are being effectively managed. All significant tasks and events are plan driven. All levels of management visibly support the policies of the operation through their attitude, behaviour and actions as well as words. Supporting evidence for required activity and the outcomes is readily available. Improvement mechanisms are working to advance the key business processes. Everyone is working towards satisfying the needs of the stakeholders of the operation. When these characteristics are integrated with the satisfaction of all legislative requirements, all industry codes and optionally all relevant international management system standards then an operation is fulfilling all the requirements of a Due Diligence Process. The majority of mining operations do not show all of these characteristics and therefore unnecessarily suffer from missed profit opportunity and constant cost pressure, less than acceptable safety and health and environmental performance and consequent poor relations with employees, unions and regulators. In these operations the characteristics to be observed are quite different.Serious incidents are occurring with no sign of a rate decrease. The operation lurches from one panic ituation to another. Management are absent in their leadership, but very active in developing rules and enforcement methodologies. The operation has no history. Re-inventing the wheel with employees who come and go at an alarming rate seems to be forever occurring. All efforts are directed at controlling the business outputs with a strong emphasis on blame. Everyone is trying to look busy to avoid the ever-present cost reduction threats. To change to more prudent management utilising a Due Diligence Process is not theoretically difficult. However it does take clear direction, focussed efforts, supporting actions with appropriate tools and perhaps most importantly an internal desire and drive to become such an operation. A Due Diligence Process is about doing the important things that have to be done, providing the understanding of why they are important, demonstrating proof of activity and effectiveness, and leading the way through effective management.

In mining, grade control generally focuses on blasthole sampling and the estimation of ore control block models with little or no attention given to how the materials are being excavated from the ground. In the process of loading trucks, the underlying variability of the individual bucket load will determine the variability of truck payload. Hence, accurate material movement demands a good knowledge of the excavation process and the buckets’ interaction with the environment. However, equipment frequently goes into off-nominal states due to unexpected delays, disturbances or faults. The large amount of such disturbances causes information loss that reduces the statistical power and biases estimates, leading to increased uncertainty in the production. A reliable method that inferences the missing knowledge about the interaction between the machine and the environment from the available data sources, is vital to accurately model the material movement. In this study, a twostep method was implemented that performed unsupervised clustering and then predicted the missing information. The first method is Density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) based spatial clustering which divides the diggers’ and buckets’ positional data into connected loading segments. Clear patterns of segmented bucket dig positions were observed. The second model utilised Gaussian process regression which was trained with the clustered data and the model was then used to infer the mean locations of the test clusters. Bucket dig locations were then simulated at the inferred mean locations for different durations and compared against the known bucket dig locations. This method was tested at an open pit mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The experimental results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method in inferencing the missing information of bucket-environment interactions and therefore enables miners to continuously track the material movement.

This paper presents the results from research undertaken in the CSIRO-funded Mineral Futures Collaboration Cluster on developing a future vision for the mining and minerals industry – Vision 2040 – in which the industry proactively contributes to long-term benefit for communities and the nation. Our research finds that Australia is currently experiencing mining-led prosperity due to high commodity prices, yet underlying this are challenges for maintaining market share due to lower productivity from extracting lower grade, more remote and complex ores. Whilst much focus has been on developing new technologies for finding and processing such ores, this paper assesses these activities, together with policy and market innovations in the context of needing to strengthen social, environmental and financial capital for long-term benefit. Vision 2010 sees mining activities linked to systems that are net providers of clean water, energy and ecosystem services, rather than minimising negative impacts alone; sovereign wealth funds are used to harness current prosperity for future innovation. Using a case study in lithium and comparisons to iron/steel, coal and copper – we illustrate the opportunities for new technology, policy and market innovations to link the mining and minerals sector in Australia to more sustainable patterns of production, consumption and prosperity.

The Martabe gold mine is Indonesia’s largest precious metals-only producer and is also one of few significant hard rock mine developments in the past 15 years. Martabe is located on the west coast of the island of Sumatra in the North Sumatra province. The mine commenced operation in mid-2012, producing over 280 koz of gold and 1.5 Moz of silver in its first full year of production.Martabe consists of a cluster of six currently identified high-sulfidation epithermal deposits. The deposits lie in a north–south corridor with an approximately 8 km strike length and 1.5 km width. The total Measured, Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate of the deposits is currently 8.2 Moz of gold and over 75 Moz of silver.The exploration program at Martabe has added more than 2 Moz of gold and 15 Moz of silver to the Mineral Resource estimates (Measured, Indicated and Inferred categories) since G-Resources acquired the project in 2009. This has been achieved at an average cost of US$17 in exploration expenditure per ounce of resource added, which includes helicopter-supported drilling programs in rugged forest terrain.The factors that led to this exploration success at Martabe include: in the first instance and most importantly, recognition of the geological potential of the mineralised system continually updating and improving ‘orebody knowledge’ and applying new ideas to the exploration program ongoing engagement and consultation by world professionals with geological expertise in similar systems ongoing executive management support for the program the high quality of work completed by previous owners a strong focus on quality control, staff development and operational safety, with the JORC Code (in particular Table 1 of the Code) as the underlying basis for quality control continual and positive engagement with government, community and other external stakeholders.This paper will discuss in detail the first of these two factors.
