Modern mining and coal cleaning techniques lead to the generation of large quantities of fines which give rise to problems in their storage, handling, transportation and further processing. Pelletisation, a method of particle agglomeration, can alleviate such problems. This paper provides a brief overview of the principles of pelletisation and a survey of the coal pelletisation literature. Then it reports results from an experimental investigation of the effect of surface active reagents on coal pelletisation. Finally the paper is concluded with a few remarks on applying the results from the experimental study to practical coal agglomeration.

During a programme of explosive performance evaluation at Hamersley Iron, Mount Tom Price Mining Operations, the relative performances of a range of heavy ANFO explosives were compared during normal production blasting operations. In addition, a number of heavily instrumented single hole blasting trials were conducted with each product type. The blasts were monitored in terms of blasthole velocity of detonation (VOD), measured using multi-point plasma conductivity probes with up to 16 measurements per blasthole. Up to 16 blastholes were monitored in each production blast. The results of measurements show a marked difference in performance of all heavy ANFO products between single blastholes and full production blasts, indicating a significant degree of interaction between blastholes in production blasting. The interaction is shown to result in a loss of detonation pressure of explosive, and considered to lead to a loss of fragmentation. The degree of interaction is seen to increase with increasing emulsion content in the products, and is more pronounced in some explosive types than others. The paper presents the methods of measurement and analysis, and the results of monitoring, together with implications on blast design and application of heavy ANFO products.

Structural fatigue damage of haul truck frames is a costly problem associated with the operation of large mine haul trucks. A monitoring programme is described which has been instigated to measure stresses in the frames of haul trucks under actual mine operating conditions. The instrumentation used and methodology employed in the computer analysis of the results is briefly described. The results of the monitoring programmes are reviewed, and the effects of various factors affecting structural fatigue damage of three common types of rear dump truck are considered. Factors discussed include the effects of haul route features (for example shovel, dump and crusher areas); the effect of operations such as turning, braking, loading and dumping; the influence of payload; the effects of malfunctions in suspensions; and the influence of haul route surface quality. It is shown that with respect to payload, while structural fatigue damage is increased with payload, the structural damage per unit of payload does not change significantly for moderate increases in payload above the nominal value. Finally, on the basis of these results, recommendations are made for haul route design and operational practices which will increase the structural fatigue life of haul truck frames.

The cost of production from truck and loader fleets is influenced by management development of the culture of the organisation, work practices, systems and procedures of the production and maintenance teams. Establishing if the cost of production is the best that can be achieved then requires the measurement of results against established standards of performance. This paper provides a series of discussion points of the factors that influence the cost of production from men and machines for large scale open pit mining operation and provides some suggested performance standards in the form of Benchmarks. Most of the references have been drawn from established large scale deep pit mines in USA, Canada and Australia which have had to implement and constantly fine tune cost efficiencies in order to survive. The discussion provides:ò a review of priorities or the relative importance of the various cost elements for a mining system;ò suggestions of systems and procedures for the operation and maintenance of machines which are considered to yield the best overall results;ò examples of operations that have developed and implemented management systems and controls that are achieving good results in specific functions; andò suggested benchmarks of performance.

Regional geological mapping and facies analysis of the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous Keelbottom Group of the Burdekin Basin have resulted in a depositional model representing six siliciclastic-carbonate facies. The six facies represent alluvial fan, braidplain delta, siliciclastic shoreline, siliciclastic shallow marine, restricted siliciclastic/carbonate shelf, and carbonate shoal depositional environments. These facies are identified in the Star beds which are equated with and included in the Keelbottom Group in this paper. Facies are repeated throughout the Group, as a result of two transgressive-regressive cycles.The first transgression recognised in the Keelbottom Group began in the mid-Famennian, and followed deposition of the Late Devonian Dotswood Group. It was marked by the deposition of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the basal Myrtlevale Formation, which was succeeded by Siliciclastic Shallow Marine facies at the peak of the transgression. The return of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the upper part of the Myrtlevale Formation marked the onset of the first regression, which resulted in the progradation of Braidplain Delta facies from the northwest of the basin. During the peak of this regression, deposition in the western part of the basin was dominated by Alluvial Fan facies.

Friction rock stabilisers (FRS) are the most common steel-based ground reinforcement used in underground mines in Western Australia. As with any other steel-based product used in underground mines they are susceptible to corrosion, particularly under aggressive minewater and mineral conditions. Because of their thin-wall tubular construction and large surface area, the potential damage resulting from corrosion is considered to be more severe for this type of reinforcement than for other forms of reinforcement made of solid steel bars. Because of the obvious safety problems which may result from corrosion, both mine operators and regulators have raised concerns regarding the long-term effectiveness of FRS installed in underground mines in Western Australia. Although corrosion has been recognised as an important safety issue, the controls of corrosion in varied underground mining environments has not been well understood. To improve the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of FRS, the Department of Minerals and Energy has initiated a research project focused on the mechanisms and extent of corrosion attacks, and their influence on the effectiveness of the reinforcement. This paper describes the research project and presents the interim results achieved To-date.

Recent significant advances in the Global Positioning System (GPS) have contributed to making real-time kinematic/dynamic process for decimetre to centimetre-level positioning more reliable and ready for the production-use. As a result of research and development efforts in this area, a robust real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS positioning prototype system has been established at QUT for both scientific and engineering purposes. This system is finding applications in a wide range of automobile robots or automatic guidance vehicle systems. This paper first summarises the theoretical basis necessary for centimetre real-time kinematic positioning, then gives a brief description for the real-time dynamic GPS system developed at QUT. The paper summarises the results of a designed vehicle tracking test. The results demonstrated that the differences between RTK filtering solutions and OTF solutions are in the order of magnitude of about 20 centimetres and the accuracy of OTF solutions are in the levels of two centimetres. This confirms that the RTK system delivers three-dimensional position with decimetre-to-centimetre accuracy. This particular RTK processing system is robust and reliable, although the system is referred to as a prototype and will be further developed.

This work aimed at evaluating the acid rock drainage (ARD) potential of five samples of a Brazilian gold sulfide mine in a decommissioning process. Three of the most traditional ARD prediction techniques, Standard Acid Base Accounting (Std ABA), Modified Acid Base Accounting (Modified ABA), as static methods, and humidity cells as a kinetic method were tested. Both the Std ABA and the Modified ABA results indicated an acid generation potential for some of the studied samples. In the other cases the results were inconclusive. The five samples were then submitted to humidity cell tests during 27 to 30 weeks. At the end of the period, the leachate pH was stabilised in a range from 3.4 - 4.1 (four samples) to 5 (one sample). The presence of relatively high levels of sulfate and dissolved metals was detected throughout the operation, specifically, Ni and Zn, and less frequently, As. These findings are discussed with the help of the samples mineralogy and Eh-pH diagrams. The results obtained in this investigation indicated potential environmental risks of this mining area. In this particular case, the kinetic tests were shown to be essential to the identification of the samples ARD potential.

The Bowdens Silver Deposit is a low sulfidation epithermal silver-base metal deposit that has formed on the northern margin of a hydrothermal system within air-fall breccias, ignimbrites and crystal tuffs of rhyolitic composition. The deposit lies near the north-eastern margin of the Lachlan Fold Belt and the rhyolitic host rocks are of Early Permian age. The silver mineralisation occurs as flat-lying zones of disseminations and silicic fracture-filling within the Rylstone Volcanics and is closely associated with sulfides of iron, arsenic, lead and zinc. High-grade silver mineralisation is also found in steeply-dipping fracture zones which host banded sulfide veins. Studies of the alteration products indicate that high temperature fluids, flowing from south of the current project area, resulted in quartz (¦adularia) û illite/sericite alteration. Cool, low pH steam-heated waters on the northern and eastern margins of the prospect area resulted in siderite û smectite-illite clay û Fe-carbonate û marcasite û kaolinite alteration. Mixing of the two fluid types resulted in the deposition of iron and base metal sulfides, a decrease in both sulfur activity and pH of the mineralising fluid, and subsequent silver mineralisation.

The need to describe shape properties of solid particles arises in many applications in the mining and minerals industry. This paper presents a technique for describing the shape of 2D particle profiles from digital images, based on traversals of the circumference of the profile boundary at a succession of different scales. The traversals are undertaken in such a way as to establish a more stable set of results than usually arises from conventional fractal multi-scale shape characterisation techniques. The resulting values can be used to provide compact information on various generic shape features of the particle profile.

Novel microbial isolates that readily oxidise iron and sulfur were recovered from samples collected from a spent chalcopyrite/pyrite test heap. Methods were developed to enrich and isolate microbes that thrive in low pH environments and utilise iron and/or sulfur as sources of energy. Screening of these isolates revealed diverse substrate utilization (sulfur, ferrous ion, chalcopyrite, pyrite, glucose) as well as growth at temperatures between 30 - 50¦C. When native isolates were employed, shake flask leaching tests of chalcopyrite concentrate resulted in higher copper yields in comparison to laboratory reference strains Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (DSM 583) and Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans (DSM 9293). After 700 hours several native isolates had leached between 20 - 30 per cent more copper than laboratory reference strains during experiments conducted at 45¦C. This research has established a unique culture collection of mining microbes that readily adapt to Australian conditions. Exploitation of these microbes may result in improved leaching kinetics and copper recovery from Australian chalcopyrite ores as demonstrated from shake flask leaching tests. Whilst this research provides a capability for Australian mineral sulfide ores, this technology can be easily adapted to suit ores of any origin resulting in more effective and efficient microbial leaching.

In Lusatia, lignite mining causes major disturbances on the landscape scale. Reclamation procedures are applied to recover the reconstructed landscape for different land use options. In this study we investigate soil physical properties of an agricultural reclamation/recultivation site directly after site restoration and the development of selected parameters within the first years after site restoration depending on varying recultivation strategies.The sandy substrates used for recultivation stem from depths of several meters. They are unstructured, free of recent organic matter and have high contents of calcium carbonate. During reconstruction and most of all during surface levelling with heavy crawlers, the substrate?undergoes high mechanical stresses. This leads to partly severe soil or substrate compaction, depending amongst others on substrate water content and mechanical stresses during site construction. We investigate the effect of different organic soil amendments, different crop rotations and partly subsoiling on the development of soil structure. We compare results of laboratory measurements directly after site construction before any reclamation measures had been applied to results we gained after three and four years of recultivation. The results show that after the earthworks are completed, the site is strongly heterogeneous in relation to mechanical stability, permeability for air and water, pore volume and bulk density. The results after three and four years show that the heterogeneity of soil physical parameters decreases. The selection of suitable crop rotations superimposes the affects of other reclamation measures, eg varying organic fertilisers or deep loosening.CITATION:Krnmmelbein, J and Raab, T, 2012. Magmatism is of first order significance in the extension process. Continental extension is terminated when sea-floor spreading commences, but sea-floor spreading will not commence if magmas do not begin to arrive in sufficient volumes. In the oceanic lithosphere, the rate of magma supply may determine whether sea-floor spreading takes place, or lithospheric extension as the result of normal fault arrays. In continental crust thickened as the result of previous compressional orogeny, the availability of magma may determine a completely different process. The author has examined metamorphic core complexes in a number of tectonic environments, in the North American Cordillera, in the Aegean Sea, Greece, and in the Solomon Sea, Papua and New Guinea. What these terrains have in common is a major collisional orogeny predating a major extensional event. The "roll back" of the lithospheric flexure associated with subduction can be seen as the "driving force" for extension in two of these cases. Metamorphic core complexes in these environments are characterized by domal exposures of crustal scale ductile shear zones, underneath which massive plutonic complexes have been formed. Emplacement of these plutons is associated with anatexis of the surrounding rocks. Migmatite complexes are well developed in the Aegean and Solomon Sea core complexes, and in some core complexes in the Basin and Range. Chains of core complexes can be explained as the result of basaltic and andesitic magmas derived from a linear belt of relatively hot rising asthenosphere, in a zone of attempted continental "break up". It is argued that core complexes are the results of magmas derived from relatively short lived mantle "hot spots" impingeing on extending continental crust which has been overthickened during previous compressional orogeny.

This paper considers three aspects of cemented fill practice and research in Mount Isa. Firstly, an account is given of the use of Portland cemented hydraulic fill both in MICAF sills and in recovery of major horizontal pillars in the 650 copper orebody, where, during mining, cemented fill has regularly been exposed on unsupported vertical faces up to 90 ft high. In the paper the main considerations are the role and specifications of the fill used but also included is a brief description of fill preparation and placement.Data resulting from a Portland cemented hydraulic fill sampling, curing and testing campaign covering about 18 months of operating practice are presented, analysed, and discussed. These yield information indicating the mode of operation of a fully-automated fill preparation station, as well as a means of comparing field and laboratory strength results. A technique with potential for use as a fill quality control without actual strength testing is also described. The data collected showed that the fill station can operate within tolerances set on product quality, that laboratory and field strength results are comparable, and that rapidly obtained fillsample properties such as moisture content and void ratio can be related to cement content and strength, and hence used for quality control.Results of a fill research programme conducted by the author in Mount Isa since early 1968 are presented involving Portland cemented hydraulic fill and alternative, cheaper additives for cementing hydraulic fill. The most significant alternative to Portland cement is quenched and ground copper reverberatory furnace slag, whIch behaves as a pozzolan, reacting strongly with any available lime to produce cementitious hydrated calcium silicates and allowing Portland cement reductions of at least 50 per cent without strength loss.

The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of an ongoing three-year government- and industry-funded research program. In order to assess the feasibility of various bio-remediation strategies, field-scale manipulations were conducted using enclosed mesocosms (limnocorrals). Two manipulation strategies were tested: addition of algal nutrients (phosphate and nitrate) to Main Zone Pit surface waters; and addition of algal nutrients (surface waters) and dissolved organic carbon (deep waters) to the Waterline Pit. Nutrient addition was conducted in order to stimulate algal production and enhance metal scavenging by biogenic particles, while dissolved organic carbon (ethanol) was added to increase oxygen demand and foster the development of sulfate reduction in pit bottom waters. Fertilisation resulted in rapid growth of natural phytoplankton populations in the surface waters of both pits. In the Main Zone Pit, the stimulation of algal growth resulted in the pronounced removal of both dissolved and total metals (Zn and Cu) from surface waters, with higher rates of metal removal being observed at higher nutrient additions. Metal removal could be attributed to the scavenging of dissolved metals by biogenic particles and subsequent particle settling. A similar pattern of removal from surface waters was observed in Waterline Pit (Zn and Cd). The addition of ethanol to deep waters in Waterline Pit was effective in promoting sulfate reduction in the lower layer. The development of reducing conditions resulted in near-quantitative removal of dissolved Zn and Cd, presumably as secondary metal sulfides. Iron, As and Ni profiles in Waterline Pit exhibited no evidence of removal from either surface waters or bottom waters. Collectively, the results demonstrate that the passive forms of bioremediation tested in these pit lakes may be effective for whole pit-lake remediation.

The Mt Morgan Minesite in Central Queensland has been subject to both underground and surface gold mining operations since the late-1800s. The site is largely unrehabilitated and poor quality surface run-off and subsurface leachate is contaminating the nearby Dee River. The site is dominated by a large open cut, which now stores contaminated surface and subsurface run-off. Three models were used to simulate the complex hydrologic processes occurring at the Mt Morgan Mine: a rainfall-run-off model, a groundwater model and a storage behavioural model. Study results showed that the open cut is filling with water and will soon spill large volumes of highly polluted water to the Dee River on a regular basis if no remedial action is taken. This will result in a three-fold increase in pollutant load to the Dee River. Based on a consideration of water quality and quantity it was concluded that the first priority for future minesite water management should be the prevention of spills from the open cut. Potential management options to achieve this objective included surface rehabilitation, catchment diversions, modification of the pump-back system and controlled releases to the Dee River during floods. However, assessing the relative effectiveness of these measures required a thorough understanding of the complex surface and subsurface hydrology of the site. The results of a 100 year simulation of hydrologic processes revealed that previously favoured management options would be ineffective in preventing spills to the river. On this basis, a continuous treat and release strategy was proposed as the only reliable method of preventing future spills. The results of this study demonstrate that good environmental management decisions must be based on an understanding of the relevant physical processes and consideration of cumulative effects over an appropriate time scale.

The æProfit Driver ModelÆ is a tool which builds costs from first principles and integrates revenue, costs and physical mining parameters and, hence, can quantify the impact and leverage on profit. In this paper an æexample mineÆ has been created to represent a typical Australian Open Cut Coal Mine. This has then been input into the Profit Driver Model to allow different variables to be tested. A series of variables were tested to determine which ones had the highest impact on profit and results are useful to management as a guide to the areas in which they can focus effort to achieve better profitability. Whilst the highest profit drivers are those external to the control of management and include selling price and exchange rate, the next most sensitive are those variables related to the geology of the mine and the mining method. These included coal quality, yield and strip ratio. Site management has some control of these. For example, the ability to vary the sequence of mining or improve the yield by a more efficient coal washing process. The efficiency of the workforce and management has similar impact to the mining variables. Finally, there are the supply variables, such as fuel, labour and explosives which are the least sensitive although, cumulatively, still significant. Each mine is different and the results of the example mine will not apply to all mines. However, the approach taken is universal and the tool illustrates a simple method to quantify the profit impact when changing variables. The benefit of the approach is the short time taken to get a set of results. This allows the more detailed and time consuming work to be more focused. The results illustrate that management has a significant influence on profitability.

The adsorption mechanism of three different O,OÆ-di-alkyl-dithiophosphate (dtp) collectors, K[S2P(OR)2] with R = Et, i-Bu and i-Amyl, on the surface of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) was studied by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The morphology changes on the conditioned Cu2S surfaces, in the collector concentration range 0.1 - 10 mM, were also monitored with scanning electron microscope (SEM). In order to assign Cu(I)-dtp species on the surface of Cu2S, the corresponding bulk Cu(I)-dtp compounds, which are clusters of the monovalent copper containing either Cu6(antiprismatic) or Cu8(cubic) cores, were synthesised, and characterised by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS and static 65Cu NMR. Further investigations on the crystal habits of the bulk systems were carried out by powder x-ray diffraction and SEM. A comparative analysis of the 31P chemical shift and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) data estimated from the experimental NMR spectra of the polycrystalline bulk Cu(I) dialkyldithiophosphate complexes was used for assigning the 31P resonance lines in the NMR spectra of the collector treated Cu2S powder samples. The species formed on the synthetic Cu2S surfaces were assigned to polycrystalline phases of: Cu6L6 with L = Et2dtpû, Cu6L6 and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Bu2dtpû, and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Amyl2dtpû. A heterophase autocatalytic step process of both formation and growth of solid CuxLy (L = R2dtp, x = 6 or 8 and y = 6) complexes on the collector treated Cu2S surface is proposed. A possible role of the oxidised form of dithiophosphate collectors, bis[di-alkyl-thiophosphoryl]-disulfane (disulfide), is discussed in terms of a specific self-redox reaction. The second order quadrupolar lineshapes in 65Cu NMR spectra were simulated and the interaction parameters, CQ and hQ, for the bulk dialkyldithiophosphato-copper(I) complexes were obtained.

The Chatree deposit is located in the central portion of Loei Fold Belt, which extends from Lao PDR in the north through centralThailand to Cambodia in the south. Epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Chatree occurs as veins/veinlets and stockworks with minor breccia in volcaniclastic and volcano-sedimentary rocks of andesitic to basaltic andesite composition and Permo-Triassic age. This preliminary oxygen isotope study mainly focuses on vein quartz of Au-Ag bearing mineralization (Stage 2) and a few samples of late Stage 4 quartz ¦ calcite veins. Quartz from Au-Ag bearing mineralisation has oxygen isotope values ranging from 8.1 to 12.3ë with the lowest values generally occurring at the deeper level (140 m below the surface). The late barren quartz ¦ calcite veins (Stage 4) tend to have higher oxygen isotope values ranging from 11.9 to 12.0ë. The oxygen isotope composition of the Chatree ore fluids were calculated at 250¦C, 300¦C and 350¦C based on homogenisation temperatures of fluid inclusions. The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of the Chatree ore fluid ranges between -1 and 6ë that overlaps with both meteoric and magmatic compositions. This shift in oxygen isotope compositions may relate to processes such as water rock-interaction and/or mixing of meteoric and magmatic fluids. It is interesting to note that the lowest quartz oxygen isotope values are spatially more or less confined to the prominent structures in the centre of the major ore zones. These structures may have been acted as conduits for higher temperature magmatic fluids. The quartz oxygen isotope values increase outwards from the centre of the main ore zones to the margin of the pits possibly due to mixing of magmatic fluids with lower temperature meteoric water. Whole rock oxygen and hydrogen isotope studies are in progress to investigate isotopic trends in the wall rock away from the ore zone. The systematic variation of oxygen isotopes in quartz from the mineralised veins and adjacent wall rocks could potentially be used as a vector to ore. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Olympic Dam mining operation is some 520 kilometres NNW of Adelaide on the Roxby Downs Pastoral lease. The deposit containing copper, uranium, gold and silver was discovered in 1975 by Western Mining Corporation (WMC). A joint venture was formed in mid-1979 between WMC (51 per cent) and British Petroleum (BP, 49 per cent) for the development and exploitation of the deposit. WMC assumed 100 per cent ownership after acquiring BP's share in early-1993. Ore is won from a highly mechanised underground mining operation and processed to refined products. Current annual output from the mining of 3.0 Mt of ore is approximately 83 500 t of refined copper, 1400 t of uranium oxide, 750 kg of gold and 12 000 kg of silver. Conventional long hole, open stoping techniques are used to extract the production ore. Since stope production began in April 1988, full surveys and appraisals of stopes have been carried out to evaluate the integrity of the design and blasting techniques. This evaluation included the determination of the degree of dilution or non break that had occurred. Performance information also made it possible to re-design any adjacent stopes to retrieve remaining ore and conversely, avoid the chances of targeting backfilled material in the future. Performing stope surveys proved not only to be a time-consuming process but one fraught with access and line-of-sight problems. Occasionally it was not possible to obtain any stope survey data, and as was often the case with the mine pass system, rarely. In 1992 the sudden failure of the pillar between the fine ore and mullock passes and the subsequent delays to production, emphasised the need to effectively monitor pass wear. Initial information regarding the development of the Cavity Measurement System (CMS) prototype (Figure 1) indicated that it had the potential to solve these problems by the introduction of a remote scanning device into a cavity. Following a great deal of investigation, Olympic Dam Operations purchased the first CMS in Australia. This paper discusses its application for all underground void surveys and the procedures developed to manage both field and office requirements.
