Deposits of chromite are in associated with ophiolite complexes in Papua New Guinea. No deposits which are currently exploitable have been recognised, but large resources that may be economic in the future are present at Ramu area and on the Morobe coast. These are contained either in laterites or in sediments derived from ultramafic members of the ophiolites. There are possibilities of establishing further resources either in similar settings or associated with ultramafic members of alkali intrusive Complexes.

An effective production control system should maximise recovery of economic material from the resource. To do this, internal waste must be accurately delineated and efficiently removed. Achieving this is most difficult in low grade blocks just above and just below the cut off grade, where ore:waste separation follows assay or statistical, rather than geological boundaries. Difficulties arise from sampling errors, configuration of the economic mineralisation, and local variations in geology. Mine bench parameters and mining equipment size apply further constraints to the actual field separation of the ore from the waste. At BCL, management of the resource starts with an effective orebody model for planning, scheduling and ore:waste prediction. Ore production from each mining location is reconciled with concentrator tonnage and grade, and the reconciled grades are compared with the planning orebody model to highlight any Differences.

The KR Process is a joint development by VOEST-ALPINE, Austria and its subsidiary company KORF ENGINEERING, Germany. This new technology allows production of hot metal on the basis of non-coking coal. The KR Process is based on the idea of separating the process steps realized in the blast furnace (generation of reduction gas, reduction of iron oxide and melting of the reduced iron) and including coking of coal. These reactions are carried out in two reactors: - the melter gasifier, where non- coking coal is coked and gasified into a high quality reduction gas and hot prereduced iron is melted. - the reduction furnace, where iron oxide is reduced by the reduction gas generated in the melter gasifier and discharged in a hot state. In order to prove the process a pilot plant has been set up in Kehl/ Rhine in 1981 with a nominal capacity of 60.000 tpy.

Indigenous brown coals, which provide a readily available primary energy source, have played a significant part in the industrial development of Victoria. The deposits located in the Latrobe Valley compare in extent with other major deposits of brown coal in the world. Smaller but valuable deposits occur at Stradbroke, Gelliondale, Anglesea and Bacchus Marsh. Extensive drilling, aided by geophysical surveys, and detailed analyses of coal samples, have enabled the extent and quality of these Tertiary deposits to be Defined.

The Effluent Treatment System at Pasminco Metals - EZ (PMEZ) was commissioned in December, 1991 and has operated satisfactorily, ensuring that aqueous discharges from PMEZ comply with the Tasmanian Environment Protection Act. The system treats both spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant, and acidic liquor generated in the gas cleaning section of the Sulphuric Acid Plant. The spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant are collected in a large catchment pond. The pond liquor, after partial neutralisation with sodium hydroxide to pH 4, and removal of suspended solids, is preferentially recycled to the Zinc Plant, for example, for washing of residues. Liquor which cannot be recycled, is treated in the Lime Neutralisation Section. The other input to the Lime Neutralisation Section is the acidic liquor from the Sulphuric Acid Plant from which mercury has been removed by contact with aluminium pellets in a fluidised column. In the Lime Neutralisation Section, the liquors are blended and neutralised to pH 10 by the addition of slaked lime. The heavy metals and most of the fluorine are precipitated. The precipitated solids are removed in a thickener with part of the thickener underflow being filtered. Most of the thickener underflow is recycled to generate solids that settle rapidly and filter well. The filter cake is returned to the Zinc Plant for the recovery of contained heavy metals while the thickener overflow is discharged to the Derwent River.

The ultimate goal of such programmes should be directed toward eventual operation and management of the established industry by the local population.

With the recent increase in the number of underground secondary sulphide dust explosions in Canada, Australia and elsewhere in massive sulphide ore mining industry, establishment of quantitative and realistic methods of analyzing the mine dust is of paramount importance. This paper examines and analyses dust samples from a mine area that has very recently experienced sulphide dust explosions. Also, it attempts to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust. Explosibility of the dust samples was determined by quantifying the oxidation reaction of the sulphide dust particles in a 1.2 L, Lindenberg open horizontal tube furnace. Percentage sulphur', % S oxidised during ignition of a dust sample of known assay, % S and dust concentration (g/m3) were determined by the quantitative chemical analysis of SO2 gas produced during the oxidation reaction. A dust sample with high sulphur content, 22.3% S (assayed) and mean particle size 9.82 pm, was found to exhibit a low degree of oxidation compared with a sample of low sulphur content, 15.44% S and mean particle size 21.7 tcm, at the same Temperature.

Conveyor belt haulage offers the advan tages of continuity of operation, minimum labour requirements, and the ability to handle large volumes of material over extended periods. However, breakdown of critical con- veyors in the system can cause undue and substantial losses in production output at the working faces, unless adequate surge bin capacity is incorporated in the haulage system. A conveyor belt simulation programme, code name 'Beltsim' was developed by Bucklen et al (1968) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the U.S.A. and provides a quantitative measure of the performance of a conveyor belt network design. A limitation still exists with the computer programme and involves the inability of the programme to predict the necessary surge bin capacity to overcome conveyor belt downtime. The computer programme was modified to overcome this limitation, to simulate a con- veyor belt breakdown, and to provide a quantitative prediction of the surge bin capacity necessary to permit a modern mining system to operate effectively and continuously.

Trial ore production began at the Hilton Mine in 1987 with ore being trucked into Mount Isa for treatment at the Lead/zinc Concentrator. The expansion of output from the Hilton mine required additional concentrator capacity which led to the design and construction of the Hilton Concentrator. Systematic laboratory and Pilot Plant testwork dating back to 1968 to develop a flowsheet and reagent regime suited to the varied and generally complex mineralogy of the Hilton ore was successfully concluded with a Pilot Plant trial using a sulphoxy based sphalerite depression system in early 1988.In May 1988, a decision was made to build a 750 000 t/y concentrator with some novel technological and capital-efficient features. The Hilton Concentrator commenced operations in December 1989 reaching target grinding rates and metallurgical performance by mid-1990. Current ore treatment rate is 800 000 t/y.Lead concentrates assaying 43 - 48 per cent Pb are combined with the Lead/Zinc Concentrator lead concentrates and smelted at Mount Isa. Zinc and Low Grade Middlings (LGM) concentrates are filtered in the zinc filter plant at Isa with those from the Lead/Zinc Concentrator and then railed to Townsville for export or treatment in Australia.

To enable this, large tonnages are put through the blast furnace, and, at the same time, the quality of the iron must be under definite control.The modern blast furnace enables these objectives to be attained. The description whieh follows sets out the general details of construction of such furnaces, and the operation at thc Broken Hill Proprietary Company's blast furnaces at Newcastle, New South Wales.The occurence of iron in many forms is so well known as to need no description. Modern civilisation may be said to be built on a foundation of iron, and, today, the production of iron and steel has beeome one of the world's industries.A short historical introduction will serve to show the evolution of the processes and apparatus since iron production assumed importance.There is no definite date fixed as to when iron was first made, or by what means it was first discovered. Perhaps prehistoric man threw iron bearing stone on to his fire, and these became reduced, Ieaving a soft metal behind, or more probably the first iron was of meteoric origin.There is evidence, however, to prove that it has been known for a period of 6000 years. Iron has been found in the Pyramids and its use was known to the early Eqyptians and later to the Hebrews, Assyrians, Greeks and Chinese. Although the terms "pipe" and "tube" are normally considered synonymous, a distinction is often drawn, the former term being applied to the hot finished product and the latter to cold finished material. It is, considered that the title of this paper includes hot finished seamless, and continuous-weld pipe, cold drawn seamless tubing, and electrically welded tubing.The continuous-weld process will be reviewed first, passing to the various methods of seamless manufacturing, which, in addition to meeting the demand for hot finished seamless pipe, also supply the raw material for cold drawn tubing, the manufacture of which will then be described. Finally the electric resistance-weld process will be Considered, and the paper will conclude with a brief review of the processes described and trends in present-day manufacture.CONTINUOUS-WELD PIPEThe raw material for this process is delivered in the form of coiled, hot finished, strip steel, generally referred to as "skelp". The end of one coil is electrically buttwelded to that of'the next, so forming an unbroken strip. The Cadjebut Mine is located 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing. Cadjebut is owned 58 per cent by BHP Minerals and 42 per cent by Billiton Australia. Cadjebut is a 'Mississippi Valley Type' (MVT) deposit. Minerals present are sphalerite, galena and marcasite in a sedimentary host of dolomite and siltstone. The ore contains few deleterious impurities and no silver. The mill was commissioned in the first half of 1988 at a rate of 320 000 tonnes per annum. An expansion in the latter half of 1989 has since increased production to 550 000 tonnes per annum. The initial geological resource at the commencement of mining was 3.8 million tonnes at 13.5 per cent Zn and 4.4 per cent Pb. There is sufficient ore left to sustain operations to 1995 at a grade of 11.2 per cent Zn and 3.9 per cent Pb. The ore from underground is stockpiled on the surface via a drift conveyor and from the stockpile is fed into a grinding circuit consisting of a SAG and ball mill. Cyclone overflow at a Pgp of 90 pm gravitates to the flotation circuit. Lead and zinc are sequentially floated to produce an 80 per cent Pb grade at 90 per cent recovery and a 61 - 62 per cent Zn grade at 96 per cent recovery. The concentrates are thickened and filtered before being trucked to the port of Wyndham 600 km away. From Wyndham the concentrates are shipped to smelters in Asia, Europe and Australia.

The scheme of rehabilitation of surface plant commenced in 1936, included the provision of improved and more hygienic changing and bathing facilities for the employees.At that time the Thompson's Shaft section of the British Mine was being prepared for a resumption of operations, and it was decided to repair and re-equip the existing building. Thus any new scheme adopted could be given a thorough trial, and the proved arrangement used as a basis for the contemplated new main changehouse on the North Section.Investigations were carried out to determine the most suitable arrangement for the Thompson's Shaft changehouse, to provide for a total of 120 men, with particular regard to the internal fittings and fixtures. Also, as the mining conditions were such that a large proportion of clothes worn underground by miners, etc., were wet by the end of the shift, the problem of drying these clothes in the availaole time from a man coming off shift to his commencing again some sixteen hours later was one of the most important to be dealt with.The changehouses in use on the North mine section of the lease were provided with racks around the walls for the men to hang their street clothes on, and a section was partitioned off to house the mine clothes and their drying facilities. The actual drying was carried out by means of hanging the wet clothes over racks between which ran pipe coils heated by means of hot water circulated from the hot water boiler supplying the showers.This method had proved to be far from satisfactory for several reasons, the main objections being:-

Ore Reserves estimation for the two producing copper orebodies at Isa Mine, Mount Isa, Queensland is discussed. The principal estimation techniques used and discussed are first, a computer based inverse power distance weighted assay meshing technique, and second, a manual arithmetic averaging technique. The principles involved in these techniques are compared, and their areas of application indicated. A general comparison of the estimation of reserves with eventual production is presented.

Whereas traditionally, stable isotope research has been directed towards resource exploration and development, it is finding more frequentapplications in helping to assess the impacts of resource utilization upon ecosystems. Among the many pursuits, two themes are evident:(1) tracing the transport and conversions of pollutants in the environment and(2) better understanding of the interplay among environmental receptors, e.g. food web studies. Stable isotope data are used primarily to identify the presence of pollutants in the environment and with a few exceptions, the consequence of their presence must be assessed by other techniques. Increasing attention has been given to the isotopic composition of humans with many potential applications in areas such as paleodiets, medicine, and criminology. In this brief overview examples are used from the Pacific Rim to illustrate the above concepts. Stable isotope data will undoubtedly play an increasing role in multi-disciplinary research in the Pacific Rim. However, consideration should be given to more effective strategies, e.g. networking, for pursuing large scale problems such as long range circulation of pollutants.

With mining development on hold and other underground works in a slowdown, the develop- ment of nuclear waste repositories takes center stage on the American rock engineering scene. Three repositories for commercial spent fuel -- in salt, tuff, and basalt -- are in the phase of site characterization and conceptual design, and one pilot project for defense high-level waste in salt is under construction. A repository design for crystal line rock has recently been postponed. Because of strict quality assurance requirements throughout design and construc- tion, and because of the need to predict and ascertain in advance the satisfactory perfor- mance of the underground openings, much intellectual energy has been expended to analyze underground openings in the unusual circumstances of the repository environment. In the long term, these efforts will lead to an improved understanding of rock behavior and improved methods of underground analysis and design. For the shorter term, a formalized ground control plan was developed, the princi- ples of which may be applied to other types of projects. This paper summarizes the status of underground design and construction for nuclear waste repositories and presents some details of the ground control plan and its individual elements.
