The allocation of boggers and trucks at Telfer’s sublevel cave mine is currently assigned by manual techniques, with decision-making primarily dependant on the judgement of the operators and mine control. Field observations indicate that allocation decisions could be improved by establishing a systematic approach to dispatch. An investigation into the current state of technology determined that no currently available solution would provide a tool to make optimal decisions for the Telfer dispatch challenge.In an underground sublevel cave (SLC) environment, the destination decision is fixed and the source is variable, so open pit and block cave solutions are not relevant. Newcrest underwent a development venture with an external vendor to develop a novel production dispatch algorithm and user-friendly software program to make allocation decisions in a systematic way with consideration given for the true complexity of the operation.This new production software, nicknamed Dingo (for Dispatch ‘n’ Go), is a smart way to assist forepersons and mine control operators in their day-to-day roles of planning shifts and allocating trucks and loaders to optimal locations during shifts.CITATION:S Graskoski, 2017. The fire started in the development section from methane released into the mine through a roof-bolt hole. The date was 8 May 1998. The flames spread quickly as the coal was ignited. After eight hours the Safety Department decided to seal the vertical ventilation shafts and the slopes. The quality of coal in the Esmeralda Mine is very high quality, and Minerales Monclova (MIMOSA) decided to recover the facilities, however, the Esmeralda Mine coals have a very high gas content of 12 m3/t. Immediately after the mine was sealed, MIMOSA staff implemented a plan to monitor the gas levels underground and contacted specialists for assistance in bringing the mine back on-line. During the next 2.5 months, MIMOSA staff and the specialists observed and analysed the gas behaviour supported by a chromatograph. With the results of the observations and analyses, MIMOSA in consultation with the specialists developed a recovery plan based on flooding the area in which fire might have propagated and in which rekindling was highly probable. Those results were analysed by the command centre (Mexican engineers responsible for mine recovery). At the same time MIMOSA trained rescue teams which included miners who had no previous experience in mine recovery operations. By 20 August 1998, the mine command centre had re-opened the slopes seal. Using a æStep-by-StepÆ system, the rescue team began the recovery process by employing cross-cuts and using an auxiliary fan to establish the ventilation circuit. The MIMOSA team advanced into the mine as far as allowed by the water level and was able to recover the main fan. The official mine recovery date was 30 November 1998.

Froth flotation is widely used for the separation of particulate materials in the world. It is a complex process whose operational behaviour in process plants is difficult to predict. A comprehensive phenomenological dynamic flotation model was presented at the 1982 IMPC. This model uniquely linked the particle/bubble interactions and water transport phenomena to the flotation cell hydrodynamics. The model was used as a dynamic framework to analyse and develop process optimisation strategies. New developments in mineralogical characterisation, real time information management systems and data validation simplify the implementation of flotation technologies for mine to mill grade recovery optimisation. With recent developments in software programming, dynamic simulation enables process engineers to develop process alternatives interactively. This paper presents such an implementation of current process analysis tools and an updated froth flotation dynamic model. It demonstrates how this new environment can be used to improve our technological knowledge of flotation, eg alternative bubble/particle attachment and detachment microprocesses can be incorporated. The dynamic flotation model has several manipulated variables (such as feed flow rate, per cent solids, aeration, wash water flow rate, frother flow rate, specific power energy (impeller speed/delta pressure), cell geometry and tails flow rate) and evaluates the dynamic effects of these variables on grade and recovery.

Two characteristics of the modern mining industry are that there is a skill shortage and that young professional people rise rapidly into highly responsible supervisory positions. With this responsibility comes the burden of identifying and managing health and safety risks. Without the benefit of a comprehensive health and safety training program, these young professionals may be putting both themselves and those under their supervision at risk. The Moura Mine explosions and the asbestos health disaster should not be just artifacts of history, but highly valued lessons that impress the need for comprehensive health and safety risk management strategies on young professionals. From the perspective of the former secretary of the Committee to implement the findings of the Moura (Disaster) Inquiry and as the former coordinator of the Coal Workers Health Scheme, key issues in occupational health and safety management systems are explored.

PX4 Software Pty Ltd is a Brisbane-based company, which specialises in providing tenement management software to mining and exploration teams operating in Australia and several international jurisdictions, including the United States, Africa, and Canada. Whilst the company is experiencing substantial growth due to a demand from both the minerals and mining technology sector, there is a crucial gap in the market for critical minerals, which will be required to achieve the net-zero emissions goal set by the Paris Agreement for 2050. To help understand and address the technology gap identified by the unprecedented demand, PX4 Software undertook the Annual Survey of Technological Transformation in the Exploration Industry. This survey involved interviews with 12 very distinguished subject matter experts in the fields of Geoscience and Geology from across the globe. From this survey, we have defined eight major categories of exploration technologies. Notably, the most transformative of these technologies over the past 65 years falls into the Geophysical Methodology category, specifically focusing on image and signal processing of both airborne and downhole data. Advances in computing power during this period have significantly improved data processing quality, enhancing orebody modelling, and targeting. This has had a profound impact on the industry. Moreover, the survey reveals that future transformative technologies are expected to centre on the automation of existing processes through AI and Machine Learning techniques. This is expected to help facilitate the identification of critical mineral systems and thus enable the exploration industry to make more informed decisions based on data analysis using Machine Learning and AI.

It is recognised by the major international codes that resource classification involves the interaction of numerous qualitative and quantitative criteria such as data quality, geological and grade continuity, etc. However, the difficulty in quantifying the degree of uncertainty associated with mineral resources estimation has led to the creation of a large suite of methodologies, terms and definitions, with almost every mining company having its own set of standards. It is also intuitively known that several traditionally used methods to evaluate resources do not take into account the spatial continuity of the grades, being unable to provide a reliable measure of the error associated with their estimates. Since they do not provide an error assessment, these methods are inappropriate to assess local or global uncertainty associated with an estimate. Faced with these problems, this work aims at developing a methodology for either quantitative or qualitative analysis of mineral resources estimation, through incorporation of uncertainty and the correct definition of the associated risk or error. The proposed methodology includes the development of a software code incorporating all the main classification techniques used by the mineral industry. A comprehensive study about each technique was conducted allowing a comparison of the parameters affecting mineral inventory assessment. A case study was conducted with a typical iron ore deposit data set from the Conceitpo mine of the Itabira Complex in the Iron Quadrangle, Brazil. The results showed the specific limitations of each classification system and the influence in selecting their key parameters, always based on subjective choices.

The steel industry is currently exploring hydrogen-enriched blast furnace operations as a means to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. However, there is a need to investigate the gas permeability behaviour of mixed burdens comprising of lump and sinter as the current knowledge regarding their behaviour is limited, particularly with regards to hydrogen enrichment. In the present study, a series of interrupted softening and melting (S&M) under load tests were carried out in a hydrogen rich gas environment (~15 per cent) in the temperature range from 1000 to 1300°C by placing different types of ferrous ore layer including Newman Blend Lump (NBLL), sinter and sinter-NBLL mixed burden in between two coke layers. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was then used to scan the interrupted test samples. Scanned images were first analysed using an image processing workflow implemented in ImageJ and the material simulator GeoDict (v2022) to segment different phases such as coke, ferrous and void based on their grey scale values. A quantitative analysis was then performed on the segmented images to estimate the phase volume fraction as well as bed permeability. Bed void fraction thus obtained agreed well with the bed contraction data obtained from the S&M test. It was further noted that both ferrous layer void fraction and bed permeability decreased linearly with increasing temperature for all ore samples. The mixed burden voidage changed in a similar fashion to the sinter, demonstrating a high temperature interaction between the two materials

The tangible effects of leakage are presented graphically, and a technique for quantifying the leakage characteristics of a ventilation column using the æSolveÆ capabilities of a common spreadsheet is demonstrated. A case study of a working decline in Western Australia is used to demonstrate the potential for more realistic design of development ventilating systems, and for more cost effective management of the condition of the duct.

Vale is the largest iron ore producer in the world. Since the 1970s, Vale has been using reverse cationic flotation to remove siliceous impurities from its iron ores. Whilst this flotation process has operated effectively for many years, it suffers from the problems of high reagent costs and high metal loss.In 2010, CSIRO investigated the use of a reverse anionic flotation process for Vale iron ore. Batch laboratory flotation studies conducted on Vale samples showed significantly reduced reagent costs and improved recovery of iron. In this work, the flotation behaviour of the different impurities in the Vale iron ore sample using reverse cationic and reverse anionic flotation processes is compared. Batch centrifugal gravity concentrators have become standard equipment in gold grinding circuits for recovery of gravity recoverable gold (GRG). The downstream benefits of installing a gravity circuit are well understood, and in general, if there is a reasonable amount of GRG in the ore, a gravity circuit is usually installed. The benefits of gold gravity recovery have also been well documented, with a large database of successful case studies. As well, predicting production scale gravity recovery results ahead of installing gravity has become a common practice. The missing link between lab and full scale has always been the ability to predict the recovery benefit of installing gravity ahead of actually doing so. Being able to predict the recovery benefit in advance would help an operation in assessing the economic benefit and help justify the capital costs of the gravity circuit with much less uncertainty.

It is very rare in the underground hard rock environment to find a deposit that is ideally suited to a specific mining method. Usually the irregular shape of the orebody will allow the deposit to be extracted by more than one mining method. During the prefeasibility stage, a number of conceptual mine designs are generally evaluated to see which offers the best method of extraction for the deposit. The selected method is usually based on key decision criteria such as the overall extraction of the orebody, the amount of metal produced annually and the unit cost of production. Often the prefeasibility study document will state that the project has an NPV of æxÆ million dollars. This statement can be made without any quantitative consideration of the likely risks of the mining methods reviewed or the level of confidence in the estimation of the NPV. By assigning a probability of failure to each component of the mining cycle a measure of the risk for each method can be determined. One mining method may provide the highest NPV when it is performing well, however, there may be a higher risk of a major failure impacting on the performance of that method, eg the failure of a mass blast of a crown or rib pillar. This paper will present a flowsheet approach to the use of risk analysis for determining the likely production rates of different mining methods. This framework allows the annual metal output to be estimated and from this the NPV for each method. A level of confidence can be applied to the estimated NPV for each option. An example will be presented on how this technique has been used within the Normandy Group.

During the 1990s, wider and more productive longwall panels were being introduced into the Newcastle Coalfield. The strata of the Newcastle Coalfield incorporate numerous massive sandstones and conglomerates, some of which formed the immediate roof of the coal seams being mined. The unexpected implications of introducing wider panels into this geological environment included more variable and increased subsidence, severe periodic weighting (with associated mid-face falls) as well as windblast.Subsidence prediction at the time was based on empirically derived data essentially relating subsidence to the width/depth ratio of the panel without accounting for actual widths, nor the impacts of variable geology. This approach required modification as locally derived data was gathered and reinterpreted.The interaction of massive strata located close to the roof of the mined seam resulted in dramatic implications for some of the operations. When associated with longwall goaf geomechanics severe periodic weighting events and crippling mid-face roof falls were the consequence. When associated with narrower panels and shortwall goaf geomechanics, mines in the region experienced aggressive windblast events. The relationships between the overlying massive strata, longwall panel geometry and the various risks encountered during this period is in the author’s opinion, the most concise still documented.As the extensive coalfields of Queensland turn to underground mining operations the relevance of these experiences cannot be underestimated. This paper will discuss recent developments as well as incorporating diverse subjects such as microseismic monitoring, low frequency radio emissions and ‘electrophonics’ as they relate also to the topic.Like Moriarty, massive strata can be disguised and can offend when you least expect. This paper documents a trail of crimes committed by conglomerate in the Newcastle Coalfield that were inflicted on the general public, miners and mining equipment. Although this paper concentrates on the criminal behaviour of conglomerate, this story is also relevant to other massive units such as coarse sandstones that may be more difficult to identify and apprehend. Currently Moriarty remains at large and able to reoffend at any time, once again taking advantage of the unwary.CITATION:Creech, M, 2014. One of the main steps during the decision-making process of long-term mine planning is the definition of the optimal sequence of extraction, which usually is synonymous with maximising the discounted cash flow of the project subjected to several constraints arising from aspects of technical, physical, and economic limits.Open pit mine production scheduling (OPMPS) comprises several intricacies related to its size and uncertainty of input parameters. Due to its complexity and prohibitive size, traditional mine planning usually relies on heuristic or metaheuristic methodologies which are able to provide good solutions in a reasonable amount of time. However, most of the uncertainty that surrounds the mining complex is ignored leading to non-realistic results.In this paper, a new heuristic approach is explored in order to solve a stochastic version of the OPMPS problem accounting for geological uncertainty in terms of metal content, multiple processing streams, and stockpiling option. The methodology involves generating an initial solution by solving a series of subproblems and this initial solution is improved using a network flow based algorithm.The algorithm was applied to a relatively large gold deposit with more than 119 thousands blocks. Since Jameson Cell flotation technology was first installed in a coal flotation application in 1988/89 at Newlands Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) there have been fundamental improvements to its design which has led to its current status as the leading technology in Australia for fine coal flotation. These improvements, which include key hardware modifications, consist of the re-development of the orifice plate to produce considerable increase in wear life and reduction in power consumption for a given air entrainment and a significant increase in the amount of air that is entrained. Modifications to the downcomer allow maximisation of residence time and air entrainment while changes to the feed and air distribution system allows a reduction in installation cost and a reduction of solids ingress into the air line. Additionally, operational improvements such as the use of recycle to maintain constant flow to the cell feed are discussed. The recent installation at Hail Creek in the Bowen Basin, which consists of three B6000/20 Jameson Cells (6 m diameter bottom-fed distributor with 20 downcomers) will be reviewed as a case study. The latest design and operability of the cells are summarised and compared against one of the original designs at Riverside CHPP also in the Bowen Basin.

A series of low shock energy water resistant emlulsion based explosives have been developed by combining inert materials, such as Perlite P500, into the formulation. The material handling, water resistance and explosive properties of these mixtures were determined as a function of inert additive type, density, charge diameter and emulsion base. Of the emulsion bases tested Emulite produced the best and most stable low density mixtures ranging in density from 0.8 to 1.35 g/cm3 producing velocity of detonations (unconfined) ranging from 3000 to 5500 nits. The mixtures could be detonated successfully at these densities at diameters as low as 25mm. Low shock mixtures formed by combining Emulite with Perlite P500 were successfully trailed at the Cadjebut zinc mine in Western Australia. The performance of the explosive, at three densities, was monitored using both continuous and point to point VOD techniques. The fragmentation produced by the blasts were compared by photographic analysis. During this trial the low shock emulsion mixtures were shown to be as effective as the currently used explosives (packaged emulsion) at a significantly reduced cost.

The Ok Tedi Project has been planned as a selective mining operation since the Feasibility Study. The nature of the orebody, and the need to 'stage' the infrastructure buildup meant that initially the mill would process gol ore using a leach-CIP process, followed by parallel leaching of gold ore and flotation of copper ore, and finally all flotation of copper ore. Cutoff grades were applied to gold and copper ore of 1.0-1.3 g/t Au and 0.4-0.3% Tot. Cu. Since startup, unpredicted occurrences of sulphide copper and, to a Lesser extent, carbonaceous material, has necessitated significant additional short term drilling (other than at grade boundaries), and shift grade control in the pit to control contaminant levels. Remodelling of the orebody based on the most up to date variography and geological interpretation has had a significant impact on the reserves, and thus the whole project development strategy; necessitating the earlier processing of copper ores, and preflotation of the gold ore.This paper discusses some of these points in detail, and in particular highlights how unforseen geological occurrences coupled with processing restrictions can have significant impacts on ore reserves and the mine development schedule.

"Mines around the world are inherently and operationally diverse. Current methodologies for the design of mine ventilation and cooling infrastructure involve controlling major safety and health hazards. Globally, it can be estimated that mine ventilation systems from various commoditiescirculate over 150 000 m3/s of exhaust air through shafts. Additionally, over 2 000 000 workersare transported every day through shafts in labour-intensive mining countries like China, India,Southern Africa, and the Americas. A key objective of this paper is to share experiences and provide a case for the revision of ætime-honouredÆ ventilation design parameters based on a benchmarking exercise on design exhaust shaft velocity from various global operations (gold, diamond, platinum, coal and base metals). An active fi eld observation on exhaust shaft velocity has indicated that, regardless of the commodity or continent where the mine operates, almost all life-of-mine (LOM) design parameters provided are in the same range of 20 m/s to 22 m/s, which is not convincing considering signifi cant variations exist in shaft depths, geography, commodity, operating and capital costs. From a due diligence perspective, there are no documented views that are available on the most widely used design exhaust air velocity. Based on the global exhaust shaft velocity data, it is noted that a significant portion of shaft velocities are outside the current design velocity of 20 m/s (some operating up to 30 m/s) and other signifi cant portions of the exhaust shafts operate in the critical velocity range. In the case of Australian coal mines, limited data suggests that none of the mines have ever reached the LOM design exhaust shaft velocity. It is self-evident that when the shafts are not operating at their design quantities either the mine system resistance is low or the ventilation and main fan is operating ineffi ciently. The most common reasons given for not reviewing the shaft system were, ætime-honouredÆ design parameter are being used and cannot be changed, mine fan pressure limits, possible fan blade damage, possible spontaneous combustion risks, leakage or simply did not consider such a possibility. In conclusion, the study has reiterated the historic lessons that a safe and expensive airway should not be utilised uneconomically by circulating too litt le air through it."

A critical step in open cut coal mining is clean removal of the overburden. This is usually achieved by drilling, blasting and digging. A key part of this process being successful is to stop drilling at the correct blast ‘stand-off distance’. The stand-off distance is the distance between the base of the drilled blasthole and the top of the coal horizon to be mined. Having this correct provides a protective cap of rock above the coal horizon so that the blast will fracture all the overburden without damaging the coal horizon or mixing it with the overburden. Drilling beyond the correct stand-off distance causes the blast to continue into the coal horizon, damaging it and mixing it with the overburden, leading to significant losses of coal product. Conversely, drilling short of the correct stand-off distance results in additional work to remove the intact overburden.

Cannington Mine is an underground silver lead zinc operation located in north-west Queensland which has been in production since 1997. Ore is primarily moved through an underground material handling system comprised of a crusher, conveyor and hoisting shaft. The Fowler Shaft was constructed in 1997 using a strip and line method with the intent for it to provide a means to hoist ore from the loading station 600 m below surface. The shaft also serves as the route of key services including high voltage power, mine dewatering and fresh air. Despite the adherence to a mining exclusion zone, large-scale change in geotechnical conditions around the shaft were first observed in 2015. Ongoing ground movement around the shaft lead to cracking and delamination of the concrete liner. Shaft management required the on-site team to measure deformation rates and magnitudes, forecast change, manage rockfall risk and deforming pipework, and ultimately, hoisting skip clearance. Monitoring techniques to observe and measure deformation were required to evolve with the magnitude of movement. Some techniques leveraged off modern technology while some of the most useful techniques were based on logic and first principles. All shaft deformation management strategies relied on the co-operation and alignment between Cannington’s Infrastructure Maintenance, Survey and Geotechnical Departments.
