Upstream Classifier are well-known in the iron ore industry for at least 15 years. At present, more than 60 units are in operation in Western Australia. The advantage of this technology is their capability to produce three products with one equipment – iron ore concentrate, iron ore middlings for further processing and slimes (tailings). The principal of this beneficiation process – upstream classification and upstream separation – will always remain. However, the optimisation of the classification and separation efficiency of the equipment itself is a continuous process driven by enhanced automation and instrumentation, design changes and the use of upstream and downstream information and requirements. Besides efficiency, the safety, maintenance and replacement conditions are very important subjects for the operation of an iron ore mine. The aim of this paper is to present a new allflux® upstream classifier design, which has been developed together with several iron ore producer from Western Australia. The new design benefits from its sustainability approach by dividing the entire equipment into small reusable parts. As a result, maintenance is minor, replacement much faster, lifetime much longer and costs much lower. Furthermore, it demonstrates new features to prevent hazardous working conditions such as confined space as well as new fixing devices to speed up the replacement of certain items and parts.

A geotechnical data management system has been developed to manage drillhole and mapping data generated from in house and consultant administered field programs. This system comprises a data collection interface with integrated validation, processing and reporting functionality. Development of the database required careful consideration of how and what geotechnical information is gathered in the field, a clear understanding of the interdependency of the parameters, and the outputs required to support geotechnical design.The acQuire Geoscientific Information Management System was selected as the preferred software to support the process because of its ability to easily manage data from capture in the field through to quality reviews and ultimately into reports. Initially only geotechnical logging of diamond core was considered, subsequently the system has been expanded to support additional geotechnical data sources such as laboratory test results, traverse and window mapping data. This paper focuses on the core logging data acquisition, validation, analysis and presentation of data.The acQuire Geoscientific Information Management System has proven to be a robust platform for the capture, interrogation, and reporting of geotechnical data. Data entry objects have been created to manage seven different areas of geotechnical data collection ranging from core logging to mapping to automated reports for falls of ground.

In 2015, MMG Limited commenced further action to improve operating margins and establish a blueprint for future growth in the Australian environment. This action was taken in the context of weakening metal prices and high input costs that arose during the Australian minerals boom.MMG was formed in June 2009 following the purchase of the majority of assets of OZ Minerals Limited by China Minmetals Corporation (CMC) through its subsidiary China Minmetals Non-ferrous Metals Co Ltd (CMN).Since formation MMG has been implementing a business model to deliver a standard way of operating. The overarching purpose of the business model is to enable fast integration of acquired assets to realise improved productivity and performance. CMN established MMG as a vehicle to reach their growth targets through further development or acquisition of mineral assets in jurisdictions external to mainland China.The business model is underpinned by the MMG operating model. The operating model defines how MMG is arranged to deliver the company strategy.This paper describes the application of the operating model to the formation of the Australian operations into a single business unit from multiple stand-alone operating sites. The development and impact of the business model on MMG’s performance is also presented.The extension of the operating model to the Australian operations has led to improvement in safety performance, direct costs and productivity. These improvements have been achieved through reducing duplication, simplification of systems and rapid deployment of improvement initiatives.The successful implementation of the operating model to Australian operations strengthens the platform for further growth. As the global interest in sustainable energy sources has increased, lithium has emerged as a vital resource, playing a crucial role in the transition towards a cleaner and more efficient economy, but with this comes important challenges, especially associated to health, safety, and environmental matters. So, it is imperative for the lithium industry to prioritise HSE measures to protect workers, environment and surrounding communities. Implementing robust safety protocols and technology helps ensure the sustainability of mining operations and contributes to the overall responsible development of the industry. In this work we present how the Chilean lithium mining industry becomes a safer and more compliant industry using digital transformation (Cochilco, 2018; Bradley et al, 2013; Cabello, 2022).

The search for economic mineral deposits is becoming more difficult as exploration goes deeper in the established mining camps and spread out to the surrounding covered areas, which may have an `overburden' some hundreds of metres thick. Geophysics is finding an ever increasing role in such exploration. When the target is zinc, the task often becomes even more difficult since sphalerite, the most commonly mined mineral, is non-magnetic, resistive, and relatively light compared to other sulphides. Fortunately, sphalerite commonly occurs in association with other sulphides, which are magnetic and/or conductive and/or heavy, thus most zinc-rich orebodies have at least one contrasting physical property to aid exploration. This paper presents the physical properties of sphalerite and other potentially important zinc minerals. Results of petrophysical measurements of samples from various zinc-rich ores are presented together with examples of geophysical surveys over a number of zinc deposits. The results show that the physical properties are not merely dependent upon the properties of the orebodies' constituent minerals. For example, the small (0.4 Mt) and low-grade (five per cent Zn + three per cent Pb + two per cent other sulphides) Flying Doctor deposit at Broken Hill, New South Wales (NSW) is much more conductive than the large (3+ Mt) and high grade (14 per cent Zn + five per cent Pb) Cadjebut deposit in Western Australia (WA). Whilst communications systems in the mining industry have evolved over the years, the premise remains consistent that reliable communication is vital for safety and operational efficiency. TodayÆs open pit mines are benefiting from advanced developmental efforts based on mesh networking hardware and software technology. This paper highlights Rajant CorporationÆs adaptation of technology, originally developed for the defence and first responder industries, to provide wireless network connectivity in open pit mining applications. Featured is the large-scale deployment of over 300 mobile, meshing access points in the Bingham Canyon Copper mine near Salt Lake City, Utah, the worldÆs largest open pit copper mine. Many companies have positioned themselves, their technology and their product line in the arena of rugged outdoor wireless broadband mesh networking infrastructure. However, Rajant Corporation has combined specialised command and control software and portable networks which offer network extensibility and redundancy that are not available in any other networking solution. Rajant CorporationÆs BreadCrumb« offers unique traits in portability and non-line-of-site networking nodes which intelligently route and broadcast in standard 802.11 protocol. The advantage of RajantÆs solution is especially valuable for users needing equipment moved easily and rapidly into and out of the theatre of operations with uninterrupted network availability. A vision of what the future mine involves all aspects of mining, ie orebody access, ore stoping, material transport, processing and waste material disposal. This paper examines one aspect of the future mine: rock extraction, stoping, automated for remote operation, high productivity and low cost. Concepts for the future require a re-think of the mining process and ROES® re-examines how bulk stoping of ore can be undertaken and how this should be redesigned to accommodate the possibilities that exists with remote control and automated operations.ROES® is a new mining system for underground mines and quarries utilising a shaft located close to or within the stope for the ore breakage process. The system is designed to exclude personnel from contact with production drilling, explosive placement and detonation so all of these tasks are remotely controlled or automated. Survey of the shaft, stope back and broken rock within the stope will occur, following each blast, by remote control or automated techniques. The survey will include excavation geometry, rock fragmentation, geotechnical characterisation and estimation of ore grade. Blastholes will be surveyed before placement of explosives and, with the survey data, the optimal explosive placement and blast timing will be determined with the best available information.ROES® is designed for application in open stoping or sublevel caving in disseminated, geologically defined, thick tabular or narrow vein ore bodies. Technologies developed for ROES® will also have potential applications to caving operations, reducing the risk of frozen ore and poor fragmentation. In a typical sublevel open stope application, ROES® will reduce the stope associated development by half and will allow ore to be brought on-stream sooner and at lower cost. Other savings will flow with the centralisation of mining activities and operational data, reduction in mining fleet, reduction in ventilation requirements, improved occupational safety and reduced mine complexity.

On Sunday morning 7th November, 1976, at approximately 2-25 a.m., smoke was discovered issuing from the 1912 m long belt drift at Appin Colliery. A Clouth steel cord rubber belt approximately 940 mm in width had been installed in the drift in 1963 on the basis that no fire resistant steel cord belt was then available to operate on a single lift at the load and on the 160 gradient of the drift. Investigation showed that the belt drift was on fire and the usually downcasting drift was upcasting. Immediate fire fighting and rescue operations were instituted and the drift was sealed off. High expansion foam was pushed into the drift from the surface and the fire was brought under control. Recovery work resulted in the fire being put out and the drift open for walking traffic by, S-P0 am., on Wednesday 10th November, 1976. lie experience gained during the fire fighting and recovery operations led to recommendations in regard to future use of high expansion foam.

Data collected from payload management systems at a number of surface mining operations show significant variance. Heavily loaded trucks travel slower up ramps than lightly loaded trucks. Faster trucks are slowed by the presence of slower trucks, resulting in 'bunching' and production losses. A stochastic model was constructed to simulate a truck haulage return cycle of 12.5 km at a large open pit gold mine in the USA. For a fleet of 35 trucks, the best estimate of the benefit achieved by a sustained reduction in payload variance of 25 per cent is a throughput increase of 1.6 per cent, within a possible error range of 0.6 to 3.2 per cent. This potential benefit is worthy of further investigation by Continuous Improvement teams at large open pit mines. The model also indicates that, under the right circumstances, provision of an overtaking lane can provide throughput benefits of up to ten per cent, The feasibility of providing unidirectional haulage circuits within large open pit mines should be examined.

Mixtures of ammonia and cyanide at low concentrations leach gold selectively from copper-gold ores. The effects of various reagent compositions on three different ore types containing between 0.3 - 1.5 per cent Cu are reported. It is shown that the results and optimum compositions vary according to the ore, which is attributed in part to the mineralogy and adsorption of solution species on the mineral surfaces. The solution chemistry of the Cu-NH3-CN system indicates that Cu(CN)a - and Cu(CN)3 species are involved in the leaching mechanism. Rotating disc studies on pure gold and copper are reported which show that the Cu(CN)32- species leach gold at about half the rate of CN but leach copper at the same rate. The presence of ammonia retards the leaching rate further. Mixtures of Cu(CN)a3- and NH3 effectively leach gold from Telfer tailing without leaching copper. The role of ammonia appears to be to control the precipitation of copper rather than the kinetics of leaching.

A hydrometallurgical process was developed for recovery of copper from copper-lead matte formed as an intermediate product at the BHAS lead smelter at Port Pirie. A plant utilizing this process was commissioned in 1984. The leach step involves oxidation of the copper-lead matte in an oxygenated acidic chloride-sulphate leachant. The results of laboratory scale testwork from which the chemistry of leaching was deduced, are presented in this paper. The rate of recovery of copper to solution from copper-lead matte depends largely_on the availability of oxygen to the sulphide surface. The optimum leach temperature is approximately 85¦C. Free acid must be supplied according to the stoichiometry of the leach reaction: Cu1.91 S + PbS + 2.91 H2SO4 + 1.455 02 = 1.91 Cu2+ + 1.91 SOj- + PbSO4(s) + 2.91 H2O + S¦ The grind size of the matte is of minor significance. Chloride concentration in leachant should be at or above a minimum of 10.0 g/l. Chloride acts to complex cuprous ions formed during leaching.

In June, 1986, Freeport Indonesia, Inc., in conjunction with Out- okumpu USA, laboratory tested the Flash flotation concept on Primary ball mill underflow. These laboratory results indicated a possible 10% increase in precious metal recovery and 0.6% increase in copper recov- ery were available over conventional methods. By October of the same year two Outokumpu Skim Air SK-240 units were operational on one mill circuit and were achieving 5 to 10% increased recovery in precious metals with equal copper recovery at one percent higher final concentrate grade. Two more cells were purchased and installed on the remaining grinding circuit in July, 1987. As part of the installation of the Skim Air cells, an existing cluster of six 508mm Krebs cyclones were replaced by four 660mm Krebs cyclones. To reduce high circulating loads, these new cyclones were made horizontal at 45 degrees. This arrangement succeeded in reducing the mill circulat- ing load by 100% and has allowed for a 10% increase in throughput at the same grind.

The tunnelling work to construct a sewage trunk line designed by the Sewage Bureau of Kobe City along north side slope of Rokko mountain range incorporated an all ground condition type (broad spectrum) TBM with slurry transport system with jet pump manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. Boring dia. of the tunnel measured to 2.0 m. The construction planning and implemen- tation were done by Ohbayashi Corporation, the general contractor. The heading way was 3342.4 m in overall length.; construction work ran from April '84 to June '85. The max. daily progress marked 31.9 m and the max. monthly progress 493.1 m according to the relevant record. The machine proceeded with the work under geological conditions featured with conglomerate, rhyolite, tuff breccia and slate, whereby soft soil zone mostly of clay was encountered in a limited area. In the latter case, however, steel segments were substituted for supporting steel ribs. The tunnel was routed beneath a meandering road with the result that more than 40% of overall length show a curvature of 50 to 200 m radius.

Hydrothermal mineralisation localised around such structures testifies to their importance as conduits for fluid flow. Mesh structures are most commonly developed in situations approximating bulk pure shear but predominantly simple shear meshes also occur. They appear to develop through the infiltration of pressurised fluids into a heterogeneous rock mass with varying material properties. In some circumstances, mesh formation appears to be a precursor to the development of major throughgoing faults. Mesh formation generally involves hydrofracturing (Pf> a3, at least locally) and the condition Pf - 63 to be maintained for the mesh to remain a high permeability conduit, requiring fluid overpressuring at other than shallow depths in extensional-transtensional regimes. The volumetric character of earthquake swarm activity appears to result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through mesh structures, representing a form of distributed fault-valve action along suprahydrostatic hydraulic gradients arising from magmatic intrusion, compaction overpressuring, metamorphic dewatering, etc.

The Eskay Creek orebody is located in north-central British Columbia (Canada). The ore contains major gold and silver values and minor but economically significant quantities of zinc. The refractory nature of the gold necessitates a pressure oxidation pretreatment prior to cyanidation. After solid-liquid separation the oxidation solution can be treated by oxyhydrolysis for iron removal and cementation with zinc dust for noble element removal. The resulting solution, as obtained in pilot studies, contains 7 - 10 g/L Zn, 0.5 g/L Ca and 2 - 4 g/L Mg. Minor amounts of cadmium, copper and iron may also be present in the solution. Over 90 per cent recovery of zinc from Eskay Creek oxidation solutions could be obtained by four stages of zinc extraction with Cyanex 302 extractant (Cyanamid Canada Inc, Niagara Falls, Canada). Zinc was stripped from the organic with spent zinc electrolyte in two stages. A complete description of the bench scale and miniplant studies of the solvent-extraction electrowinning circuit follows. A great part of the research on froth flotation of gold ores deals with ores containing gold associated mainly with sulphides, resulting in a largely accepted view that what takes place with sulphides (eg pyrite) in a flotation cell also happens to gold particles. This paper is concerned with the influence of some inorganics (CuSO4, CaO and NaCN) on gold particles flotation, using ethyl or amyl xanthates as collectors. The bench-scale tests were carried out with ground quartz and gold particles mixtures. Some findings stemmed from this study: flotation of the gold particles of size 0.16 mm was efficient adding only frother; larger gold grains were better recovered by the use of stronger collector CuSO4 did not seem to be an activator for gold; the addition of NaCN up to 200 g/t or CaO up to 2000 g/t did not depress the gold grains when amyl xanthate was used as collector although with ethyl xanthate the gold depression was verified.

Copper-lead dross is a by-product of the refining of lead bullion produced by the Imper- ial Smelting Process. This dross contains some 27 percent copper, 50 percent lead, four percent zinc and one percent sulphur. An ammonium carb- onate leach at atmospheric temperature and pressure removed the copper from the dross while the lead zinc and precious metals remained in the leach residue for return to the smelter. The leach solution containing the copper was then purified by liquid-liquid ion exchange using LIX64N in a kerosene diluent. ("LIX" is the registered trade mark of a range of hydroxy oximes marketed by General Mills Inc.) The pilot plant had a capacity of 0.7 kg/h of CuSO4,5H20 and was operated for some fifty days on a two shift basis. Copper sulphate of excellent purity was produced, and the results obtained indicated that a copper recovery of ninety percent from the dross could be expected from a commercial installation.

With traditional grade control processes, geological models are created by geologists at the completion of the data collection stage and wireframe construction is closed off at a set date to allow for time to complete the estimation process. Any issues identified at earlier stages or the addition of new data requires the estimation process to be started again. Alternative interpretations are explored only if time allows and often in a limited fashion. An alternative workflow has been developed at the Waihi Underground Gold Mine utilising Leapfrog Edge and Seequent Central. Geological and grade control models are created, dynamically linked, and saved as separate branches. A project geologist is able to work on the grade control model and a mine geologist on the geological model simultaneously. This allows for a non-linear modelling workflow with continual review and feedback. The introduction of new data can occur right up to the model due date, with data collection, validation, alternate interpretation, and review happening incrementally. Models are categorised and stored in Seequent Central according to project status. An approved version of the geological model and grade control estimate are uploaded at the time of release and transparently capture all data used at a point in time, as well as the review process. Dynamically updating models for grade control has reduced turnaround time while increasing accuracy and quality. Estimates of individual domains are vastly improved from being able to rapidly evaluate the effects of model parameter changes in real time and 3D. Development and stope design directly benefit from these streamlined processes, with higher quality, timely production occurring as a result.

The past 100 years the mining industry can be characterised by a focus on increasing financial returns often to the detriment of social, human, manufactured and environmental capitals. Despite the sustainable development principles promoted by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Equator Principles and the African Mining Vision, which should have enhanced project promoters’ ‘licence to operate’ within a host community or nation, the industry has often failed to integrate proven innovations and best practices that enhance sustainability outcomes for mineral resource projects. This failure has led to delays, the abandonment of projects, with value destroyed for promoters, governments, host community and investors.The paper will outline the application of proven innovations, Enterprise Optimisation (EO), and Sustainable Operations (SUSOP®), during the pre-feasibility phase of a project. By determining the value of each capital before and after the application of proven innovations, the presentation will outline how and where value can be created across all five capitals over the life of a project or operation.The paper will demonstrate how the application of proven innovations significantly transforms the value-proposition of a mineral resource project or operation by generating additional value across all of the five capitals, reducing project risk, thus generating value for all stakeholders.CITATION:Jones, M, 2015. S. A. Tomich (Consulting Geologist, Perth) : I would like to commend Mr. Haycraft on his presentation on the economic geology of the North End of Kalgoorlie. This is an intriguing area which is in the Kalgoorlie field but not of it, inasmuch as it is separated spatially from the main Golden Mile by the Golden Pike Fault. Mr. Haycraft has stressed the differences-the mineralogical and structural differences of economic significance between the two areas.I would like to ask whether he is satisfied that the lithological sequence in the North End is the duplicate of that in the main Golden Mile area irrespective of the postulated effects of erosion, and more specifically whether there is any chance that the quartz-dolerite-greenstone of the North End may be in any way dissimilar from the quartz-dolerite-greenstoneof the Golden Mile which is tellurude bearing.J. A. Haycraft: In relating the quartz-dolerite in the Hannan's North-Mount Charlotte area back to the Golden Mile, we find some quite close similarities. Although the rocks are similar they are not necessarily one and the same.At Mount Charlotte we have three varieties of dolerite- a coarse-grained gabbroic dolerite on the eastern side of the orebody, the host rock medium grained and on the western side, a fine grained dolerite. Further west we have an amphibolitic variety of quartz dolerite.Recent drilling south of the Golden Pike fault on the Enterprise No. 20 level had indicated a remarkably similar sequence of rocks. We drilled west through a wide section of medium grained rocks into a fine grained rock and then into amphibolitic quartz dolerite before intersecting the Golden Pike fault.
