Achieving relinquishment of mining sites is becoming increasingly difficult, with a study by Byrne (2013) estimating that out of a set of 73 mining and metals sites around the world, less than ten per cent had achieved relinquishment over the last 50 years. The median forecast duration of time allocated for water management in the closure plans studied was approximately ten years, while the reality at the actual sites was a median duration of 22 years to date and growing.One of many challenges in mine closure planning is managing geomorphic stability of stream diversions. The challenge is to be able to demonstrate to regulators and the community that a proposed rehabilitation solution will be stable over the long term.During the mining operations, local watercourses and surface drainage can be diverted and managed using engineered channels and drainage structures. However, during the post-operations stage, the engineered channel and drainage may require modification to a more natural condition that will facilitate long-term environmental sustainability. Achieving geomorphic stability of a diverted watercourse is difficult, with the majority of stream diversions in Australia failing to meet expected design performance (White et al, 2013). Geomorphic stability is a complex process that is controlled by a combination of factors, including hydraulic flow conditions, geotechnical conditions and vegetation.This paper proposes that a fully dynamic and deterministic geomorphological model can be used to supplement the traditional empirical approaches to assess long-term geomorphic stability. The paper provides an overview of the geomorphological models and how they have been applied in engineering studies for forecasting future evolution of stream systems. A sequence of ultramafic units, very well exposed in Munro township in the Abitibi areal, of the Cahadian Shield, exhibit features which indicate that they are sub-aqueous extrusions. They occur within a sequence of tholeiitic pillow lavas, thin graphitic sediments. and large differentiated sills. The units range from a few metres to more than 250 m in length and less than 1 m to over 30 m in thickness. Over 60 individual units, occurring as flat pancakes on top of one another, make up a total exposed thickness of 150 m. The units have formed from a magma composed of a very olivine-rich picritic liquid carrying up,to 40 per cent olivine phenocrysts in suspension. Different units display a variety,of cross-sectional profiles. As an example of the most extreme type of profile, a typical unit 2 m thick consists of a cap of highly jointed fine-grained quenched rock, 10-30 cm thick, which becomes coarser downwards, grading into a zone composed of radiating and criss- crossing skeletal olivine crystals forming the well-known spinifex texture. This becomes even coarser-grained downwards, with "books" of parallel platey olivine crystals developing sub-perpendicular to the plane of the units. The media in Australia is currently rife with articles and pronouncements on global warming as the most significant crisis of our time, which may æthreaten the future of civilisation as we know itÆ. This has been recently reinforced by release of Al GoreÆs film æAn Inconvenient TruthÆ, and one would be led to believe that the science of global warming is settled. And yet there is a strong body of literature disputing this apparent consensus which suggests that care should be exercised in introducing radical policies to solve a crisis which may not be real. Such policies would have a major impact on those in professions such as engineering (project approvals and design to minimise greenhouse gas emissions), accounting (carbon tax issues) and the law (corporate disputes on greenhouse gas issues are already in train in the USA). This paper addresses the hysteria apparent in the climate change debate by presenting factual evidence relating to climate change and the current phase of mild global warming. Some of the more extreme statements on future impacts are repudiated with published data, and alternatives to the purported role of fossil fuels in temperature change are offered. The potential impact of political decisions on professional activity is discussed, as are the implications of a possible future reversal of the scientific consensus, as has occurred in the past. The paper concludes with a call for the professions to exercise their Learned Society role to ensure that a rational and public debate is held on the broad issue of climate change.

Material characterisation, ore sequencing and process capability are commonly regarded as the key parameters to consider in designing and operating an effective pit to plant supply chain. Therefore, an understanding of rock mass properties is the starting point for controlling the presentation of problematic material to the ore handling plant and optimising process utilisation. There are different methodologies for characterising problematic material and ore handleability which exist across a spectrum of sophistication. At one end of this spectrum are simple indices built using first principles geology and at the other are complex algorithms developed using advanced analytical methods, machine learning and ore traceability. Regardless of the method, without an integrated process for careful management of problematic ore, material handling delays (ie blocked, bridged, blinded and buried events) will interrupt the stable flow of production. The ability of the ore control geologist to mitigate these delays is central to the ore handleability challenge. This paper describes a quick and easy solution that links the presentation of ore to the operating window at the crusher. This operating window is based on material characterisation, using the physical, textural and mechanical properties of the rock mass, and crusher performance. It also describes how a basic problematic ore index (POI) can be developed using ore tracking to the production face, petrographic studies of ore texture and mineralogy, and existing variables in the geological model. Finally, this paper will demonstrate that by coding the POI into the geological model for mine planning, together with performance monitoring through compliance to plan routines, material handling delays at the crusher can be reduced, unlocking significant resource value.

This paper provides a brief fundamental insight regarding the fabric media concept for liquor filtration. The subject matter will be of interest to metallurgists and engineers with professional responsibility for world class design of solid liquid separation processes and efficient lowest cost operation of existing mineral process plant. Avocet Mining commissioned the worldÆs first mineral liquor clarification process incorporating a fabric media liquor filter at their Lanut gold mine in Sulawesi, in 2004 with design consulting provided by the Australian company SLS Technology Pty Ltd. Development of the technology continues with applied research focused on selecting textile parameters to apply filtration to a wider range of particle and contaminant types, higher solids concentrations, and different process liquors. Liquor filtration with the Fabric Media technology offers an array of attractive benefits. For Avocet Mining, filtration of pregnant liquor directly from the heap leach pad has enabled removal of the sediment pond and sand filters from the traditional process flow sheet, thus providing significant cost and installation time savings. Avocet Mining has recently expressed confidence in the technology indicating selection preference of the technology for the expansion at Lanut and for a new project. The application design window for the Fabric Media concept is extremely flexible with the technology now successfully applied to many different liquor chemistries and application objectives around the world. Potential cost savings for solid liquid separation process plant, such as counter current decantation circuits, clarifier vessels and thickener tanks can be calculated from laboratory measurements or pilot plant demonstrations.

In the dynamic realm of mining health and safety, addressing psychosocial hazards is crucial. Legislative requirements now demand employers navigate this complex terrain, but uncertainty often clouds effective management. The resource industry’s skills in managing physical hazards are showcased in their adaptability in this case study. Integrating the Critical Risk Management framework with organisational psychology, a mining company achieved a transformative breakthrough. They identified and assessed psychosocial hazards and established a sustained and risk based approach to managing these hazards within the workplace. This innovative approach encompasses strategic steps. Key learning from the case study was: - Beyond Bow-tie Analysis: Discover why a linear risk analysis tool, like Bow-tie Analysis, falls short in capturing the dynamic and interdependent nature of psychosocial hazards. - Psychological Safety Power: Learn why psychological safety is vital for gathering accurate data and ensuring control effectiveness. - Dive into how it creates a data-driven foundation for success. - Broadening the Brush: Explore the impact of preloading Broad Brush Risk Assessments, an educational and dynamic hazard-identification tool. Control Mastery: Gain insights into how the Critical Risk Management framework ensures ongoing control monitoring and effectiveness for psychosocial hazards. While this implementation’s outcomes are still in their early phases, promising key indicators such as absenteeism, turnover and cultural engagement have emerged. Understanding watercourses and river processes at a landscape scale is vital for managing risk to mining infrastructure and operations as well as minimising future environmental impacts beyond the life of the mine. Recognising this, Iluka Resources Limited engaged Alluvium Consulting Australia to identify and characterise watercourses across several neighbouring mineral tenements in the Eucla Basin, South Australia (Alluvium, 2013, 2014a, 2014b). The objective of the studies was to inform planning for risk management during mine planning and operation and appropriate landscape rehabilitation for mine closure.Mining operations in the area are by open cut extraction of mineral sands. The extracted resource is processed on-site before leaving the site for export. Several pits are to be developed in stages with simultaneous backfilling and surface reinstatement. Mining is initially taking place in the Jacinth tenement, where up to 100 km of watercourses may be directly or indirectly impacted (refer to Figure 1).The total study area (shown in Figure 1) is approximately 330 km2 and spans three smaller areas that were the focus of separate investigations during mine planning.CITATION:Ferguson, C, White, K, Harding, M and Hardie, R, 2016. "The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) currently supports nine individual industry working groups focused on developing standards and guidelines for the mining industry. In 2013 the GMSG established the Industrial Comminution Efficiency (ICE) working group to develop freely available guidelines for plant operators to quantify the operating efficiency of industrial comminution circuits. This initiative has engaged a diverse group of representatives from mining companies, equipment vendors, consultants and metallurgical laboratories with vast experience and capabilities in the field of comminution. The GMSG has issued the first two guidelines from the ICE working group in 2015–2016, with the third guideline having completed the approvals process and being in the final stages of editing ahead of release later in 2016.Two of the ICE guidelines present methods to quantify comminution circuit efficiency, and a complementary guideline describes best practice methods to collect the necessary samples and data to furnish these assessments. Collectively the guidelines cover sampling, survey data collection, laboratory testing procedures and calculation processes to allow the user to generate a relative circuit efficiency factor for the comminution circuit at the time of survey. The reference energy consumption is calculated considering the measured F80, P80 and ore strength at the time of survey, using either or both of the Bond or Morrell methods presented in GMSG guidelines dedicated to each method. The guidelines consequently provide the end user with practical tools to perform circuit efficiency analysis and to readily quantify the impact of optimisation efforts.This paper presents the content of the three ICE guidelines and describes their intended application.Citation:Giblett, A and Daniel, M, 2016. For decades, organisations worldwide have been working to overcome challenges associated with new technology adoption while keeping up with rapid growth, development, and globalisation. In minerals processing, the challenges in developing and implementing solutions that contribute to the mining value chain are unique from other markets, as mining operations expect that world-class suppliers provide them solutions to gain a competitive advantage in their operation, production, performance as a financial asset, and as a long-term partner as we move into the future of mining. A simple shift in mindset is proven key to successful technology implementation. Change leaders must no longer think of their expertise in the area of application as their only responsibility; they must make a mental shift and see themselves in dual roles that strive to integrate the perspectives and needs of both developers and users. Successful change leaders must: (1) collaborate, seeking user involvement to ensure fit between product and operational needs, (2) demonstrate commitment to receive new technology, and (3) communicate to achieve an eventual shift of ownership from supplier to users that is seamless. Additionally, this strategy contributes to the mining value chain, as it allows developers and implementers to evaluate how change contributes to the asset’s position both within the company and in the commodities market. This paper will explain the shift in perspective for new technology implementation in detail and provide recommendations that operations can emulate, using examples of real challenges and lessons learned during a commissioning of the CYCLONEtrac™ Particle Size Tracking (PST) system at Cerro Verde’s C2 Concentrator. This concentrator has led technological change for plant optimisation, witnessed improved Net Metal Production (NMP), among other benefits with PST, the only technology in the market capable of providing real-time, online, and direct particle size measurement at the individual hydrocyclone level

Century, a major shale hosted zinc deposit in the Riversleigh Fold Zone of northwest Queensland's Mount Isa Basin, was discovered by CRA Exploration in 1989. A total of 322 drill holes, completed by the end of 1992, define a resource of 118 Mt of mineralisation averaging 10.2 per cent zinc, 1.5 per cent lead and 36 grams per tonne silver. Mineralisation is developed in the upper portion of Lawn Hill Formation Unit 4 (Pmh4). The intersection of the Termite Range and Little Range Faults, major regional structures, may have been important in controlling mineralisation development. Three listric normal faults, and an unconformity between Proterozoic rocks hosting mineralisation and overlying Cambrian carbonates, divide the deposit into three distinct blocks. The deposit is essentially blind, outcropping in only two places. The deposit is characterised by an extremely simple sulphide mineral assemblage, sphalerite being the most common sulphide phase. Pyrite, the most common phase in many other shale-hosted zinc-lead deposits, accounts for only five per cent of all sulphides present. Siderite is the principal non-sulphide phase present. Both sphalerite and galena have near stoichiometric compositions. Sulphides are confined to carbonaceous shale horizons. Intervening siltstones are essentially barren. Shale and siltstone beds forming the mineralised sequence can be correlated across the entire deposit area. Systematic grade variation occurs within each mineralised shale bed. Although sulphide laminae parallel primary lithologic layering, the point of most intense mineralisation development transgresses stratigraphy. Bituminous material is intimately associated with sulphide mineralisation.

The Ambuklao and Binga Rehabilitation Project is a 175 MW hydro power project currently under construction across dual sites in the north region of Luzon Island, Philippines. When it was built in 1956, the Ambuklao Dam harnessed the second largest hydro-electric reservoir in Asia. However, due to landslide erosion and prolonged silt infiltration caused by an earthquake in 1990, the power plant has been rendered inoperable since 1999.To bring the power generating facility back to life, the project scope entails the rehabilitation and construction of civil structures, shafts and tunnels. A major component of these works is the decommissioning of a section of the seven metre diameter headrace tunnel by installing a concrete plug. The headrace tunnel is part of a closed waterway system that connects the dam via a shaft, exhibiting a hydrostatic pressure of 13 bar (1300 kPa) at the location of the new tunnel plug. In addition, the power station ball valves have seized ajar and the damaged intake riser is unsafe toaccess thereby requiring the plugging operation to be carried out under live flowing conditions.Working under hydrostatic pressure and live conditions, the headrace plug will be an underwater tremie pour operation that includes drilling and concrete injection through blow out preventer caissons installed in the floor of an underground chamber above the tunnel. The purpose of this paper is to describe the key engineering and planning components involved in this operation including pre- and post-grouting, chamber crane, sonar, local water compensation, jet flushing, drilling, caisson installation, and concrete design, production, delivery and placement. The success of this task rests on the strategic preparation and operational management of risk and safety in a challenging rural environment.

Hillgrove, situated on the New England plateau of New South Wales, is an area rich in history and resources. Key resources are predominantly antimony, gold and scheelite and the area surrounding the historical field is environmentally sensitive and topographically challenging. Since acquiring the Hillgrove leases, Straits Hillgrove Gold has undertaken a significant exploration program on these historical mining areas with the goal to return the field to production. This exploration program has enabled Straits to significantly increase the resource base and has subsequently enabled the planned redevelopment of Hillgrove to be realised. In October 2006, installation of mining infrastructure and the initial stripping of existing development had commenced. To successfully redevelop Hillgrove, Straits has had to adopt a highly mechanised, trackless, diesel mining operation which will see the production rate commence at an initial rate of 250 kt/a of ore from a narrow vein environment. This ore will be processed on site to produce antimony metal, gold bullion and a scheelite concentrate.

Mining companies and operations across the globe typically target best practice financial management, along with a focus on economically driven mine plans. Not only is this inherent in running a successful mining business, but also critical in addressing investor scrutiny. The standards for social and environmental practices is less consistent than this, with most companies adopting standards that are driven through legislative and compliance requirements of the nations in which they operate. Although there is still room for improvement, Australian is a country that stands at the forefront of social and environmental legislation, driving more sustainable planning practices for mining operations, with an ever-increasing focus on mine closure considerations. Of the many nations yet to reach such a legislative position, Kazakhstan is a place where some companies are driving towards world class standards beyond what is government mandated. The future of human exploration in space is intimately bound to the future of mining and energy production on Earth. By 2025, one or more manned bases will probably exist on the Moon, exploring the lunar landscape and geology, and acting as a learning platform, and possibly a resource platform, for expeditions to Mars and beyond. Unless the mining and space industries take an active and cooperative interest in the technologies required to exploit minerals and fuels in and from hostile environments, the necessary advances to support permanent extraterrestrial exploration will not be ready in time. With the notable exception of using lunar Helium-3 as a fusion power fuel, no other reason has been identified for the mining industry to take any direct interest in the exploitation of extraterrestrial resources for the benefit of its customers on Earth. Ample reasons exist, however, for the industry to take a direct interest in supporting technological development of the extraterrestrial resources necessary to support the economical exploration of space. The mining industry has critical experience in the development and application of technologies for the discovery, extraction and processing of natural resources; experience that the space industry will need to create a viable permanent presence in space. The industry also understands the end to end process of resource development and utilisation. On the other hand, the space industry can directly benefit the mining sector by helping mature and advance the extractive and processing technologies needed to economically and sustainably develop resources in hostile terrestrial environments, such as those available in low concentrations, at extreme depth and/or inconvenient geographic locations. We propose that strategic partnerships be created between the mining, space and allied industries and research organisations. Such partnerships would develop a joint capability for mutual benefit, targeting the most significant advances in the least time. The space industry will learn how to exploit essential resources off-planet, and the mining industry will gain access to technologies to help extend their activities on earth.

In panel/block caving mines, large amounts of information are collected at the operations. This information includes grades and extracted tonnage, fragmentation, lithology, design of stopes and main infrastructure, geotechnical information, overbreak progress, seismicity, numerical modelling and many other mine variables. To improve the reliability of the production plan it is required to integrate the mine data into one platform. In this paper, the logic of a new technological platform is presented for analysis, modelling and design in panel/block caving mines. The platform includes an acquisition system for mine data and geotechnical information, a back-analysis module for calibrating statistical models and a module of visualisation of the results. The application and benefits of the platform is illustrated for mining induced seismic risk for panel/block caving mining operation. Mining operations in arid regions are compelled to reduce their consumption of fresh water. Closed water circuits are an attractive solution and, in addition to reducing freshwater consumption, have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption as well as the environmental impact by eliminating effluent discharge. Accumulating ionic species have been shown to hinder collector adsorption which reduces the recovery of valuable minerals. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of degrading water quality on collector adsorption however there is very limited understanding as to how this takes place from an electrochemical perspective. This study therefore aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying concentrations affects the electrochemical adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto galena. The synthetic plant water used in this study comprised of single salt solutions to isolate the effects of the ionic species of interest. The ionic strengths were varied between 0.0242 M, 0.0727 M, 0.1212 M and 0.2426 M which correspond to University of Cape Town (UCT) Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) synthetic plant waters of 1, 3, 5 and 10SPW, respectively. Mineral rest potentials indicated how changing water quality affected xanthate-mineral interactions. Microflotation observed the impact of changing water quality on mineral floatability.

Photogrammetry-based techniques supported by traditional mapping tools are more frequently used for open pit geotechnical mapping. It fundamentally involves the collection of geological, structural and rock mass data from pit batters when safe to do so. These are essential components for refining and implementing continuous improvements to geotechnical models. The geotechnical model is used to review bench performance, optimise geotechnical design parameters, interpretation and analysis of pit slope stability. This paper is a case study of implementing different pit mapping methods at Mount Carlton gold mine, North Queensland. It critically reviews the tools required, including the Brunton compass, mobile application Clino, geotechnical data mapping software CloudCompare (2015) and Sirovision software. The review compares the image precision, structural measurements and data analysis. The review also underlines mine site management philosophy for safe geotechnical data collection to identify in-pit geotechnical hazards and the mitigation of potential slope instability. Sirovision is a remote sensing system for site geology mapping and interpreting geotechnical characteristics of exposed mining faces. The system utilises off-the-shelf digital SLR cameras to capture stereo photographs of the rock face and uses the latest image processing technology to generate accurate 3D models. These 3D models are digitally analysed using computational geometry to extract unbiased and accurate geological and geotechnical data. CloudCompare processes high accuracy 3D dense cloud rock surfaces reconstructed with photogrammetry software to extract the geological planes using the FACET or Compass plugins. The major discontinuity sets can be observed and the orientation (dip/dip direction) obtained from the algorithm is accurate and reliable for geotechnical assessment, including kinematic and rock slope stability analysis.

We investigated the duration of formation of the giant Ok Tedi porphyry copper-gold deposit in Papua New Guinea using zircon SHRIMP U-Pb dating. The intrusions that host the Cu-Au mineralisation have a maximum age of 1.43 ¦ 0.22 Ma. Since previously published K-Ar dates on the same intrusion constrain the last thermal event at 1.11 ¦ 0.05 Ma, we conclude that the magmatic-hydrothermal event that produced the deposit lasted ~0.45 million years (Myr). A comparison of Ok TediÆs calculated volatile fluxes with those from arc volcanoes and active mineralising hydrothermal systems suggests that the efficiency of metal deposition is a key factor in determining the duration of deposit formation. Stuck drill rods (often referred to as bogged rods) in production ‘upholes’ are a common problem in the underground mining industry. Bogged and broken off drill rods have the potential to fall out of the hole without warning, posing a serious hazard to personnel and equipment below.Current industry practice to alleviate this hazard can be to either grout the hole in order to lock the drill rods in place, or to ‘plate over’ the hole with a rock bolt. Each of these operations seriously delays mine production as both require demobilisation of the production drill and mobilisation of alternative personnel and equipment to address the hazard. Both methods have been assessed for safety and efficiency and were found to be expensive, time consuming and in the case of plating over, ineffective.To address the safety and efficiency short-comings of the traditional practices, the long hole plug (LHP) has been developed to safely secure the lost rods in the hole. The LHP when struck by falling drill rods behaves similar to an expansion shell anchor transferring the axial forces from the falling drill rods horizontally into the rock mass. It is installed using standard production drills allowing work to safely continue with little interruption.Extensive testing has been carried out on the LHP in the laboratory and underground at the Rosebery mine on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia. Testing has included static pull testing, full scale drop testing and underground trials.The outcome of this work has proven the LHPs ability to add safety, volume and cost benefits to the Rosebery underground operation and it is currently in use at that site.
