Geoscientific information management enables the capture, management and delivery of the original geoscientific observations and measurements of the earth’s natural resources. However, original observations and measurements are worth nothing if the quality and integrity of the data can’t be guaranteed. Geoscientific information is one of the fundamental assets enabling miners to make confident and accurate business decisions, whether that is defining a resource model, performing reconciliation, delivering ore reserve reports or meeting environmental compliance requirements. Without access to reliable, validated or verified data it increases the risk of miners using incorrect information for reporting and compliance. Industry codes, such as JORC, or government regulations, such as environmental compliance requirements, must be adhered to and companies should be able to confidently report to these standards. Without having a robust information management framework in place, it becomes a challenge to make trustworthy decisions, report confidently and reduce the risk of non-compliance. As a key initiative, good data governance should form one part of a miner’s information management strategy. Within the mining industry it is common for companies to only consider technology tools as the key focus for compliance whereas a mature information management focus will additionally consider people and process. All three pillars are critical for a miner to have confidence in their data driven decisions. This paper discusses an industry framework for best-practice geoscientific information management based on the observations gathered from analysing data management practices within the mining industry. It focuses on how the three pillars of people, process and technology are crucial elements to improve operational decisions and ensure companies are compliant.

This paper outlines the journey of cultural maturation and management system development at the Mt Rawdon (MRO) gold mine from its acquisition by Evolution Mining Limited (Evolution) in late 2011 to 2016.Evolution embarked upon a series of projects that aimed to improve the operational consistency and implementation of change on-site, while leveraging off the existing strengths of the operation. This document describes the gaps that were identified, the processes used to close them, and the resulting cultural change and production outcomes, with a specific focus on how to optimise the culture at any mining operation.MRO had a history of four owners in less than three years when it became a key asset of Evolution. The site leadership team (SLT) decided to influence the culture at MRO by reviewing and upgrading the existing management processes.The first priority was to improve transparency and collaboration at the SLT level, followed by improving competency in project management. The next phase was to strengthen the internal communication using a deliberately designed network of meetings, communication screens and other initiatives. Once there was some traction, the focus moved toward increasing production volume and decreasing cost per unit by improving short-term planning and execution capability. Together with other initiatives, this resulted in improved collaboration between all functions, which in turn netted over 37 per cent mining production uplift.Following solid success, a process of prioritisation and alignment management was implemented. This supported the ‘Mine to Mill one operation’ ideal and allowed the SLT to decide month-by-month what actions were to be prioritised. These priorities incorporated production realities and longer term imperatives of the balanced business plan.Much of this work was completed during a period of declining gold prices and a relentlessly strong Australian dollar, making it difficult to justify spending money on improvement projects. The ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Water Quality Guidelines (the Guidelines) are the primary reference used in Australia and New Zealand for managing and regulating water quality. For most mining operations in Queensland, the environmental authority (EA – licence) incorporates the national default guideline values (GVs) for ecosystem protection as trigger levels (TLs). Exceedances of TLs ‘trigger’ further investigation and reporting. A review of the surface water compliance history at a metalliferous mine in North West Queensland identified minor exceedances of the cobalt GV as a common trigger for investigation and compliance reporting.The reliability of GVs is dependent on the availability and quality of ecotoxicology data for the relevant contaminant. The current national default GV for cobalt of 1.4 µg/L is classified as a low reliability GV due to the lack of available data at the time it was derived (ANZECC/ARMCANZ, 2000).The Guidelines are presently being revised and the toxicant GVs will be available as a set of web-based values and associated technical briefs. The new platform will enable the timely revision of existing GVs and inclusion of GVs for additional toxicants. Cobalt was considered a priority toxicant for the Guidelines’ revision, but was not included in the revision process.A preliminary review of the international literature indicated that at least 15 additional chronic cobalt toxicity studies had been published since 2000, sufficient to derive a high reliability cobalt GV using the protocols developed for the revision of the Guidelines (Batley et al, 2014; Warne et al, 2015). In considering the organization of research, it is necessary to know just what research is, what objects are in mind when setting out to conduct research, and what are the functional units which are required to enable a coordinated effort in research to proceed.The dictionary defines research in the following terms: Laborious and patient search, as for truth, diligent inquiry or examination in seeking facts or principles; inquiry, scrutiny; to search or examine with continued care; to seek diligently; to search again; to examine anew.This is, of course, simply a formal definition, but the reference to "labour", "patience" and "diligence" should be noted.The following quotation from an answer to the question "What is Research?", published recently in a technical journal, puts some life into the formal definition:- Essentially, it (Research) is nothing but a state of mind a friendly, welcoming attitude toward change. Going out to look for a change instead of waiting for it to come. Research, for practical men, is an effort to do things better... The research state of mind can apply to anything: personal affairs or any kind of business, big or little. It is the problem-solving mind as contrasted with the let-well-enough-alone mind . . . It is the "to-morrow" mind instead of the "yesterday" mind. Note the statements that: Essentially, it (Research) is nothing but a state of mind, and the research state of mind can apply to anything.

"Several mine scheduling tools exist for use in optimising and scheduling the reserve according to in situ value. These tools generally value the ore on a per block basis according to regressed recovery models based on ore grade and type. It is then the task of the plant metallurgist to ensure that these ore blocks are fed to the plant in a manner that satisfies the prevailing plant constraints. This task is often completed in complex Excel® spreadsheets that are modified over time with factors applied to account for plant modifications or limitations.It is the authors’ experience that this approach is difficult to audit and replicate in a consistent manner. Furthermore, operational decisions, such as primary grind size or autoclave oxidation are made on the metallurgist or managements’ perceived optimum value and does not necessarily represent a cash flow based optimum.Many processing plants contain multiple internal constraints. As ore feed grades and properties change over the life-of-mine (LOM), processing-bottlenecks shift from one unit process to another and different operating strategies need to be adopted to maximise cash generation from the process.This paper presents a unified optimisation approach to scheduling ore based on a circuit mass balance to describe the process plant with individual models for each significant unit operation. The approach allows for optimisation over multiple input variables and the inclusion of linear and non-linear constraints.This optimisation process has been applied to different complex gold operations. The end result is an automated scheduler that selects the optimum blend of ores as well as plant operating conditions that satisfy all internal plant and shutdown constraints while maximising the objective of choice (metal production or cash flow). The models are also valuable for evaluating expansion or debottlenecking opportunities of individual processing units. Technological innovations and emerging analytical capabilities are transforming the way drill samples are analysed, with real-time mineralogical analysis made possible. In addition, new business/technical requirements are challenging long standing processes to incorporate more sources of information during planning in order to improve compliance to plan during mining and processing. Unfortunately, the new sources of information that are added do not always have adequate protocols in place to ensure quality data is collected.Spectral data covering the visible – near – short wave – midwave – longwave range are routinely collected by the Geoscience and Exploration department at BHP Billiton Iron Ore for accurate mineralogical identification. These data are used for geological interpretations (logging and modelling) and prediction of physical variables (metallurgical and geotechnical properties).This paper introduces how sampling and quality assurance / quality control concepts have been applied in the spectral data process. Tanking of tunnels is now often specified when inflows exceed as little as 1 L/s/km with a unit distance of 100 m. To demonstrate inflows over a 100 m segment of a tunnel are less than 0.1 L/s with a standard error of 0.01 L/s by timed, gravity filled, volume measurement up and downstream of the segment, the measuring cylinder volume (L) must exceed 10 Q, where Q is the flow in L/s, and the number measurements taken and averaged must exceed 20 . If a standard error of 0.02 L/s is acceptable then 5Q2 measurements must be taken and averaged. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is one of the world’s premier suppliers of iron ore. It currently has operations in Western Australia and Brazil and also has some iron ore interests in West Africa.BHP Billiton’s Optimisation R&D team has developed a proprietary mine planning optimisation tool that uses a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). This tool is called Blasor and it is used to rapidly evaluate the resource development potential (RDP) scenarios for the company’s business development strategy. In addition it generates life of asset (LOA) mine plans for the company’s operations and growth projects. The Blasor optimiser maximises the discounted operating cash fl ow (DCF) as the objective function, subject to mining, processing and transportation capacity constraints and blended product quality constraints. The paper will outline how Blasor has been applied to the resource development potential (RDP) strategy scenario studies, growth project evaluations and LOA mine planning within BHP Billiton Iron Ore.The practical application of Blasor to resource planning optimisation within BHP Billiton Iron Ore has demonstrated the value of such a tool for optimising strategic directions through the evaluation of a number of carefully proposed scenarios and maximisation of operational decisions, such as cut-off grade, open pit development sequence, etc. Particularly for the company’s business development direction studies, Blasor plays the role of a fair valuation tool in that it discovers the most valuable resource development scenario, thus establishing a sound basis for comparing the economic merits of each scenario.

A major Ventilation Upgrade Project commenced at the Fosterville Gold Mine (FGM) in 2017 to service the ongoing ventilation requirements of the underground mining operation. The project consists of three large diameter ventilation raises totalling 1100 metres, and new axial primary ventilation fans to upgrade the mine ventilation system. With a mining depth of 1200 metres and a thermal gradient of approximately 2.7 °C per 100 metres of depth, the completion of the Ventilation Upgrade Project is key to the ongoing success at FGM. The Ventilation Upgrade Project will allow continued mining, including high-grade gold deposits, lower in the mine where heat is increasing. Figure 1 below illustrates the underground workings at FGM, and provides a general view of the ventilation upgrade works to establish the new exhaust system from the lower workings to surface. Whilst raisebore pilot drilling the H4760 Return Air Rise (RAR) from surface to 395 metres, the raisebore drill string became stuck in the raisebore pilot hole at approximately 300 metres down hole, presenting a significant technical problem and delays to the project. This Case Study provides an overview of the recovery process undertaken at FGM including the recovery of the stuck drill string. The value of the stuck in-hole equipment, the investment in the shaft site preparation, the collar stabilisation, the underground development to the base of the ventilation raise, the surface footprint prepared for the Primary Fans construction and the limited available space on the site were all motivations to recover the raisebore drill sting and ultimately recover the ventilation raise location. More importantly, the long lead-time required should a new shaft location be the final solution, and the delay this would incur to the ventilation upgrade was unacceptable. Recovery of the drill string was not possible using the capability of the Contractor’s Raise Drill. An alternative method for freeing the drill string was required. A significant amount of engagement with industry was undertaken to seek out potential solutions and draw from the experience of others. All methodologies available were considered and assessed. Ultimately, after several attempts at freeing the raisebore drill string using various methodologies, Adams Drillers and Clear Cut Interventions were engaged to provide a turnkey recovery solution.

Optimising pit slope stability and reducing strip ratio of a mining operation are two key tasks in geotechnical engineering. With a growing demand for minerals and an increasing cost associated with extraction, companies are constantly re-evaluating the viability of mineral deposits and challenging their geological understanding. Within Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO), the Structural Geology (SG) team investigate and collect critical data, such as point based orientations, mapping and geological inferences from adjacent pits to remodel deposits where previous interpretations have failed to account for structurally controlled slope failures. This work outlines the key methods utilised by the Structural Geology team which form the foundations of informed orebody knowledge and subsequent geotechnical design recommendations. This publication utilises the results from a recent analysis to highlight the benefits of this methodology and how it has impacted the economics of an operation through optimisation of a pit wall ‘cutback’ and crest relocation.

Mining is an international business and vital contributor to national and global economies. It depends on the trust and confidence of investors and stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), 2016). The Social Licence to Operate (SLTO) is an increasingly multifaceted and multistakeholder risk that can impact investment decisions. Community challenges to broader political and economic decisions have given rise to protest delaying or stopping projects or closing mines and has led to loss of life (Ernst and Young, 2016). Some governments are now giving greater powers to stakeholders to make the final decision on approving mining and metals activities (EY, 2016). With billions of dollars in project investment at stake, ongoing engagement, collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders is crucial and mutually beneficial solutions are increasingly expected (EY, 2016). It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks (and opportunities) associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the necessary level of trust with investors and stakeholders to underpin its activities (CRIRSCO, 2016). In this paper, we introduce the term ‘LJC’ to refer to the LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator, which is an advanced technology developed by Longi Magnet, integrating various techniques such as hydro separation, magnetic flocculation, and magnetic columns. This technology combines gravity, hydro separation, and magnetic separation to achieve efficient and reliable separation processes. With its low maintenance requirements and high reliability, the LJC technology has proven to be effective in magnetite processing. The LJC technology offers two primary benefits when compared to traditional magnetic drum separators. Firstly, it can enhance the quality of the targeted or improved concentrate at a coarser product size by minimising the carryover of gangue minerals into the concentrate. Secondly, it can significantly improve the concentrate quality (eg achieving >67 per cent Fe) while maintaining similar liberation size and mass yield. In China, this technology has been widely adopted in magnetite processing, replacing traditional magnetic drum separators and fines flotation in the final stage of the process. Through collaboration with a magnetite producer in Western Australia, Longi Magnet successfully implemented the next-generation LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator to replace the original stage 3 magnetic drum separators. The application of the LJC technology resulted in an increase in product P80 from 32 μm to 43.1 μm, while maintaining a final concentrate grade of 65 per cent Fe. Additionally, the power consumption, measured in kWh per tonne of concentrate, was reduced by 10 per cent. By eliminating the bottleneck caused by the requirement of a coarser liberation size to achieve the desired concentrate grade, the plant’s throughput was increased by significantly. The LJC technology has demonstrated its ability to reduce the carbon footprint, improve concentrate grade and enhance mass recovery, offering an alternative solution for magnetite processing. The high-grade magnetite produced by the LJC technology is particularly suitable as a raw material for Directed Reduction Iron and green steel production. This paper introduces the principles of the LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator and provides details of its application in a magnetite operation in Western Australia.

In this paper a project to develop a joint optimisation/simulation model for production planning in a mine-mill complex is presented. The system involves a mill receiving ore from a number of different locations, each with a unique mineral composition. The mill consists of several crushing and grinding circuits that function in series and parallel. Scheduling the flow of materials through the mill is complex due to constraints on throughput imposed by the millÆs design, the length of time material can be stockpiled on the surface, varying input mineral composition, and throughput targets for a range of output products.An optimisation model is used to create a set of campaigns (ore feed rates) over a given planning horizon under the assumption of deterministic mill throughput. A simulation model is used to evaluate the production plan under assumptions of stochastic machine failure and operational losses created by the need to cycle between input feeds. Campaign scheduling has two important implications for the simulation. First, during any campaign, multiple ore types may need to flow through the mill. However, the mill must be controlled to ensure that only one type of ore can be in a crusher, a grinder or a storage bin at any point in time. Second, as the mill switches from one campaign to another, the set of ores being processed may differ. Thus, the flow of ore through the equipment during a campaign changeover must be controlled to ensure that one or more of the ores from the current campaign can be completely eliminated before the ores from the new campaign are introduced.The simulation architecture employed for this project is Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) combined with MS-Excel as a user interface. A fixed step discrete event orientation is assumed as the simulation framework. A set of model constructs was built for the project with a specific Canadian milling operation in mind, but was designed to be representative of a broad class of milling operations. The constructs are implemented as class objects within the VBA structure, each with a number of properties and methods. The collection of VBA objects forms a composable modelling toolkit. These objects can be linked together by users, via MS-Excel, to represent a broad range of milling operations.

The last 20 years have seen a dramatic rise in the use of 3D visualisation and modelling for geological data, but there has been relatively little effort to do the same for the variogram models that underpin the standard estimation algorithms used by the mining industry.For kriging, one of the most used geostatistical estimation methods, specifying a variogram model is a critical part of the modelling process. Experimental variography is the primary method for approximating the theoretical variogram function from the available sample data, and then determining an appropriate variogram model from the approximations.The traditional tools used for experimental variography are limited to looking at subsets of the data and are often presented without reference to geographic space and geology. It can be difficult to know what input data is being used for a particular experimental variogram, and whether there is enough support in the experimental variograms to propose an appropriate model.To overcome these limitations, an innovative approach called situational variography has been proposed that visualises variograms in 3D alongside contextual geological and geometric data. Presenting variograms in this manner aids understanding of how the spatial variance relates to the underlying data.A 3D extension of the 2D radial variogram maps will be investigated which allows for dynamic exploration of the full experimental variogram cloud. Mining and mineral processing makes a vital contribution to AustraliaÆs national export income, and our society today is critically dependent on its products. Despite the importance of this industry, its operations often come under scrutiny because of its high potential impact on local environments û both social and ecological. The challenge for the minerals industry today is to make the most responsible and best possible use of the national resource base, maximising overall resource utilisation.Research efforts and industry implementation of improvements have been moving in this direction for a considerable time already, and the industry has a long history of process innovation and improvement in Australia. Examples range from the early development of gold cyanidation and mineral flotation to more recent work undertaken under the auspices of AMIRA or through the various CRCs and research organisations such as the AJ Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy, the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre.However, the nature of research and innovation in the mining and mineral processing sector is changing, as the industry itself copes with the pressures introduced by globalisation, industry consolidation and commodity price cycles. Large firms that have historically maintained a tradition of corporate technology and a culture of innovation are moving to outsource their technological and research competencies and are adopting æfast-followerÆ mentalities. At the same time, the challenges of sustainable development that need to be addressed are many-faceted, multidisciplinary, and require a holistic approach for significant achievements to be realised. Many sustainability issues, particularly those pertaining to environmental and safety issues, are shared across large sections of the minerals industry, and are seen as æindustryÆ problems beyond the scope of a single company.In this environment, collaborative research efforts are becoming the dominant mechanisms for building on past innovations and ensuring the continued success of the mining and mineral processing industries within a framework of sustainable development.

Blasthole cone samples are used for grade control in most of the iron ore mines of the Pilbara of Western Australia. This method of sampling is straightforward when the target sampling interval matches the mining bench height but is problematic when the blasted bench is 'flitch' mined in two or more passes. Crucially, the sampler needs to decide which part of the blast cone represents the upper and lower flitches to be mined. This sampling selection decision is usually made by assuming a certain proportion represents the subdrill component of a sampling face in a blasthole cone and the two flitches are split equally from the remaining portion. In this study of a West Australian channel iron deposit, sampling experiments were carried out to determine the actual proportions of a sampling face in a blasthole cone by spray painting the blast cones at flitch and subdrill boundaries during the drilling process. Measurements were then taken to assess the differences between assumed sampling face proportions and actual proportions. A set of paired samples was also collected from a number of blastholes with one set using the assumed proportions of each flitch for each sample, while the other set sampled the actual proportions, which were identified from the cone painting process.

The DeGrussa copper deposit was discovered by Sandfire Resources in April 2009. Construction of the 1.6 Mt/a concentrator, open pit and underground mining operations commenced in March 2011 with first concentrate production achieved in October 2012. Over the next ten years, DeGrussa grew to include both the DeGrussa and Monty underground mines, establishing itself as one of the world’s premier copper producers with total production of 663 000 t of contained copper by the time the mine closed. Final ore was trucked from Degrussa on 5 October 2022. This paper examines the mine closure experience from both a planning and operational perspective. The paper provides an overview of the site’s mine planning process including the factors involved in determining the end of the mine life and how this was tracked and communicated in the lead up to the end of mining operations. It will also look at some of the specific operational aspects involved in maintaining steady state production all the way through to the last day while facing increasingly challenging conditions. These factors, along with the external factors faced by most of the industry such as labour shortages and COVID related disruptions, contributed to making it an interesting journey to the end of operations at DeGrussa.

We are currently witnessing large fluctuations in the relative price of ironmaking raw materials brought on by changes in the dynamics of supply and demand, market conditions, environmental regulations and technical factors affecting the iron and steelmaking process. From a customer perspective, it is the behaviour of iron ores in downstream processing that give them their value; their impact on the sintering or pelletising process and subsequently blast furnace ironmaking. It is therefore important to consider this value when developing projects, making mine planning/cut-off grade decisions and in setting price differentials for differing quality.This paper describes the use of the Marx value-in-use model to quantify the downstream value of lump iron ores. The Marx model consists of heat and mass balance modules for sintering and pelletising and a rigorous two-stage heat and mass balance model of blast furnace ironmaking. Mass balance and cost models are applied for steelmaking, casting and rolling. The use of a heat and mass balance allows accurate comparison of the impact of raw material properties on blast furnace operation. The impact of minor elements, such as alumina, silica and phosphorus, and metallurgical properties on ironmaking is described, and examples are given for the calculation of a lump premium.CITATION:Honeyands, T and Jelenich, L, 2015. Fibre reinforced shotcrete has long been accepted as temporary ground support in both mining and civil tunnel linings. Greater knowledge and understanding of shotcrete as an engineering material and advances in its quality have enabled designers to eliminate the requirement of a second pass lining. The initial shotcrete can be used as the permanent tunnel lining or be incorporated into the final lining design, rather than ignored and considered as sacrificial.For the initial shotcrete lining to become a suitable permanent tunnel lining it must be able to establish and maintain stability over time when subjected to all possible loads. To ensure this, best engineering practices are required during the design phase of the project to analyse; ground conditions including rock mass properties, ground and ground water quality, rock mass loadings, excavation sequencing, and construction methodologies.The increased durability of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete over traditional tunnel support, in the right ground conditions, makes it possible to achieve a serviceability design life of greater than 100 years (as required in most infrastructure projects). By specifying a good quality shotcrete mix and ensuring adequate quality control for batching, fibre dosing, preproduction testing, excavation sequencing, and application control, it is possible to eliminate the requirement of a secondary lining. The properties of a suitable permanent lining must be well established using suffi cient preproduction testing in combination with post application monitoring.A major benefit of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete in ground support applications is the removal of any requirement for workers to work under unsupported ground. Its use can also significantly reduce, if not eliminate, the manual handling associated with placing traditional reinforcement such as lattice girders and mesh. Both of these benefi ts are significant with the ever increasing focus on health and safety.This paper highlights factors that must be considered in the design and specifications to enable an initial shotcrete tunnel lining to become the permanent shotcrete tunnel lining.

Raise boring is the preferred option for constructing ventilation shafts in Australia. The trend has been towards larger diameters and longer single-pass shafts, and if at all possible, reaming through to the surface. The risk of raise failures, due to missed, unforseen or latent ground conditions has therefore been increasing, along with the need for better, more confident stability assessments.While the stability of specific weak zones and structures must be assessed individually, empirical rock mass classification schemes have been successfully used for about the last 20 years to assess general raise stability; eg the McCracken and Stacey method (M&S).Unfortunately M&S, as originally documented in McCracken and Stacey (1989), did not include a database of raise diameter and rock mass conditions versus actual performance. Nor was there a procedure for assessing the risk of failure due to adverse ground conditions. Peck and Lee (2008) published an Australian database of raise bore performance. Raise diameter and ground conditions, in terms of a lower bound Qr value, were presented for 50 cases versus raise performance. This paper updates the 2008 raise performance plot with more and SRF-corrected data. McCracken and Stacey (1989) had previously recommended that additional geotechnical data should be acquired and analysed when the proposed raise plotted on the unstable side of raisebore stability ratio (RSR) = 1.3, but the Australian data used in this study also suggests that all sites with Qr Contributions and sensitivities of various rock mass parameters (RQD, Jn, Ja, Jr, Jw, SRF, time-dependent weathering/deterioration) to raise stability and risk of failure are discussed. Numerous case studies are used to illustrate issues with stability assessments.As raises can now be remotely supported using sprayed fibrecrete, questions of time-dependency are also discussed. In recent times, contiguous piles, ‘mini-piles’ and grouting have also been successfully used to presupport or otherwise improve the stability of near-surface sections of weathered, or poor quality rock masses.
