Subsurface fires are a common threat to coal mining, as spontaneous combustion of coal can potentially result in gas combustion and explosion. Fire-proof techniques, such as grouting, foam, or colloid injection, are not in a position to function ideally, due to the limited coverage and stopping the extinguishment substance from reaching the fire location. Liquid nitrogen, as a kind of all-submerged fire prevention or extinguishing method, can rapidly extinguish fires, thus preventing gas explosion and minimising extinguishment time. Injecting liquid nitrogen through boreholes is an important way during the period of mine catastrophe. But liquid nitrogen is not effective enough in infusion; technical issues restrict the development and utilisation of liquid nitrogen fire prevention and extinguishing technology. Immediate infusion of liquid nitrogen is usually associated with ‘air slug’ (the balloons and bubbles in the pipeline which hinder the flow of low-temperature liquid), which blocks pipelines for liquid nitrogen injecting. Another issue is that the pipeline tends to be damaged due to freezing, which undermines the injecting efficiency of liquid nitrogen and its application result. In order to solve the problems of the low efficiency and some other related field issues in liquid nitrogen perfusion, the ground–underground high efficiency liquid nitrogen injection technology were developed. Implementation of liquid nitrogen infusion techniques in Chinese coalmines achieved the goals of fire prevention and air-cooling. The technique presented in this paper is efficient in absorbing heat, and consequently, displacing oxygen and combustible gases. Field tests at Rujigou and Yangchangwan Coalmine justified the efficiency of the technique. By using this technique, there was no waste left behind, which may impede the subsequent production. Centennial Coal operates the Springvale and Angus Place longwall mining operations that extract coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale and Angus Place mines have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions, where mining operations are conducted with a thick coal roof interbedded with numerous claystone units and relatively high levels of vertical and horizontal stress. The combination of a relatively high stress regime and weak laminated roof has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life.Following underground roadway development, the mine roadways can experience high levels of roof movement that can lead to roof falls. Two-point wire extensometers (known as ‘telltales’) are extensively used for roadway condition monitoring. Along with extensive other geological and geotechnical data, monitoring data is used to prepare geotechnical hazard plans that are then used in all areas of mine planning to allow for safe and efficient operation of the mine.This paper presents a case study of the use of a new software tool that allows time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. It can be used in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. The paper provides a brief review of the multivariate uniform conditioning and the localised multivariate uniform conditioning techniques and presents a case study based on a porphyry copper gold deposit in Peru. Two other important scenarios have been investigated and will be particularly emphasised: The recovered selective mining unit (SMU)s depend on a combination of copper and gold content, which can be expressed by means of ænet smelter returnsÆ (NSR). Two approaches are compared. Firstly, the application of a composite cut-off on NSR on the joint distribution of each grade and the application of uniform conditioning to three variables is investigated, ie for the first approach NSR is used as the main variable. The second approach considers copper as the main variable. In the case of multiple domains the procedure used to apply the technique to process mixed panels is clarified and recommendations are made.

Dilution is associated with considerable direct and indirect costs in underground open stoping operations. As shown in previous works, an improved ability to predict dilution enables the economic risks associated with unplanned dilution to be reduced. Depending on the width of the orebody and depth of mining, the economic performance of an open stoping operation can become even more sensitive to dilution. It is shown in several well-documented studies that as little as 1 per cent of additional dilution can impose millions of dollars of lost profits per annum. Optimisation of a stoping operation is therefore largely dependent on the ability of the operation to minimise dilution. This can only be achieved through sensible analysis of past and future performance of mined stopes using the most appropriate recent available technologies and tools. This article presents a new design process that utilises advanced geotechnical numerical modelling and various other analytical tools to assist with a more robust mine design of open stoping operations. The focus of this design process is on geotechnical factors affecting dilution during the life-of-mine. A recent application of this optimisation method for a mining operation is presented in this paper as a case study. Through the application of this method and various other operational improvements, the mine was able to deliver more consistent production and lower operating costs over its life-ofmine outlook and was able to reduce dilution by up to 50 per cent and achieve sustainable record high production rates.

Freeport IndonesiaÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine is the new underground block caving mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) deposit which started production in mid-2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining method and will be the fourth underground mine opened within the EESS deposit. Evaluations were made on former block caving mines at PT Freeport Indonesia (IOZ, GBT Area I and II) in order to design a more appropriate support system. As a permanent support, the thread bar bolt support system is widely used in the DOZ mine. The advantages of this system are ease of operation, quality control and high bond strength. The main problem of this system is the curing time of about 28 days to achieve maximum strength, necessitating the installation of a temporary support for its implementation. In this instance, the system was inefficient in operation and studies were required to find an alternative grouting system. This paper examines the evaluation of thread bar bolt support system and compares the performance of two types of grouting (resin cartridge and cement cartridge) with cement grouting performance. The evaluation is conducted with a pull out test. The advantages and disadvantages for each grouting method, comparison of cost estimation and grouting application in mine scale are presented in this paper.

Pipe umbrella support systems – also called canopy tube systems – have been used successfully for tunnelling in challenging ground conditions since the 1970s. Historically, the drilling unit was the limiting factor for pipe umbrella installations – less attention has been paid to pipe couplings and their influence on labour time and load-bearing capacity.This contribution investigates the influence of the type of pipe connection on the load bearing characteristics of a connected pipe and discusses associated influences on design calculations and installation performance. Standard thread connections reduce the effective cross-section and thereby load-bearing capacity in the connection area. To achieve design parameters, over-dimensioning of the un-weakened pipe section is the only way to overcome this limitation. Recently, two new, alternative connection types were designed and developed for connected pipe umbrella pipes. The first one is the nipple coupling, consisting of fitting with a threaded connection that is pressed and welded into the ends of standard tubes. The second type is the squeezed connection, which mechanically connects non-threaded pipe ends, achieved by force-fitted squeezing from the drill rig. Both coupling types have technical as well as operational advantages compared to the common thread couplings, which are the weakest point in the support system.In the following sections significant technical differences are explained, design values given and a site example presented to illustrate the operational advantages of the newly developed coupling?type.CITATION:Volkmann, G M, 2014. In January 2008 Chirano Gold Mines Limited committed to expansion of the Chirano Gold Project from its existing design capacity of 2 Mtpa ROM ore to a new design value of 3.5 Mtpa. In addition to increased throughput, the design had to contend with increasing ore hardness and competency, while at the same time make cost effective use of existing equipment with minimum disruption to existing production. The solution adopted involved some novel approaches including tertiary crushing and operation of the SABC circuit in overflow ball mill mode and parallel elution with a common acid wash column. This paper describes the approach taken to the design of these elements to achieve a cost effective and safe capacity expansion.

Pyrrhotite is the predominant gangue mineral at Renison comprising about 60 percent of the sulphides in an average ore blend. It exists as two crystal structures - monoclinic and hexagonal. Monoclinic pyrrhotite is the slowest floating of all minerals but is ferromagnetic and hence recoverable more efficiently by low intensity magnetic wet drum separators than flotation. This paper discusses the installation and commissioning of four 0.915 m x 3.0 m, 0.1 Tesla permanent magnet, wet drum separators prior to sulphide roughing flotation. Planned circuit and process control modifications to better accommodate magnetic separation into Renison's flowsheet will be Discussed.

Within 22 months of commencing decline development, the Prominent Hill Ankata Underground Project achieved its full production rate of 1.2 Mt/a.In 2010 construction of the Ankata Underground Project was approved. Decline development commenced in November 2010 and the turnout for the first sublevel was reached by August 2011. The first stoping ore was produced in the first quarter of 2012 and production was successfully ramped up to full production during the third quarter of 2012.Diamond drilling commenced in October 2011 and was conducted concurrently with the underground development. This presented challenges as mining and production targets had to be balanced with underground exploration activities. To achieve production on schedule, without adversely affecting the diamond drilling program and future development, meticulous and adaptive planning techniques were required. This included involvement from engineers, geologists, underground operators and underground diamond drillers.The granularity of these planning techniques allowed the management and prioritisation of development and diamond drilling down to an almost hourly basis. A constant flow of information from drill assay results was fed back into the planning systems. This resulted in a constantly evolving mine plan as the orebody was further refined. Optimisation projects are regularly undertaken without knowing the root cause of an issue. It is all well and good to trial a multitude of flotation reagents, change the operating characteristics of your flotation cells, or add more media into your ball mills, but time and again, root cause analysis traces issues back to the performance of hydrocyclones. In JKTech's experience, hydrocyclones are poorly operated and maintained (in both primary grinding and regrind circuits), exacerbating issues that many operations commonly experience.Recent case studies are presented where JKTech has been engaged to improve the process only to discover that the hydrocyclones were the main issue. At one operation it was found that the hydrocyclone feed density gauge was reading significantly lower to the actual density. Following re-calibration of the gauge, and with further improvement of cyclone operational and design parameters using JKSimMet, a significantly sharper efficiency curve was achieved. This resulted in improvements to downstream recoveries while alleviating pumping capacities that were previously constrained by fines and water caught up in recirculating loads.Several other case studies are presented which may seem to be relatively basic, but many basics seem to be getting lost in the day-to-day responsibilities of the modern plant metallurgist. This work presents the fundamental properties of CITIC magnetite concentrate and its performance in pelletising and sintering. CITIC concentrate has been widely used in pelletising to produce pellets for blast furnaces. It is also used in sintering to benefit from its sintering performance. CITIC concentrate has excellent balling properties owing to its size distribution, particle surface properties, large specific surface area and balling index, leading to strong green pellets and product pellets. When used in sintering at appropriate levels, sinter bed permeability improves, productivity is increased while coke consumption reduces, and sinter strength improves.

Schalker Eisenhütte und Maschinenfabrik GmbH, Nordic Minesteel Technologies and Bombardier Transportation have developed an evaluation tool that considers the main cost drivers of the rail, truck and conveyor haulage systems on the market today. In almost every circumstance, the advantages of a haulage solution are clear. A haulage system is outlined that is fully automated, including driverless operation, and that provides increased tonnage, safety and equipment life and reduced maintenance downtime. Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in the southern Mongolia holds mineral resources that make it one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. The project is operating an open pit mine on the near surface of Southern Oyu deposit and developing underground block-caving mine at the Hugo Dummet North where 80 per cent of total resources exists. Oyu Tolgoi (OT) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and implemented an industry standard blasthole sampling, and ordinary kriging grade control estimation with block-out process. Since 2017, grade control improvement projects have successfully completed that have led to the implementation of current, improved grade control system. Geological model is updated by blasthole logging on Leapfrog® and used for daily grade estimations. GC estimation is proceeded solely on Vulcan® by running Lava script and integrating with a relational database. Combination of block-out procedure produces GC model which is updated in Vulcan® and as well as in the database simultaneously. Switching to the integrated database eliminated many manual processes such as importing and exporting data and enabled access to the database anytime, anywhere and from any device. Thereby, these improvements allowed to increase an efficiency, create a comprehensive reconciliation system and reduce operational risks. We are looking forward to expanding applications of integrated grade control data stored in the database. This paper outlines how the grade control system was developed at OT’s open pit mine, and how it is integrated into the short range mine planning, mine reconciliation workflow and ultimately enabled development of various automated reporting systems.

The unmanned driving technology in open pit coalmines is an important technology that relies on innovation to drive the development of the open pit coal mining industry in China’s transformation of growth drivers and industrial structure upgrading. It is an important path to solve the shortage of mine truck drivers in the future mining, an important way to improve the working environment of open pit mining personnel, and an important foundation for achieving flexible production capacity in open pit mining to cooperate with the coordinated development of new energy. The communication rules at intersections are key to ensuring the safety and efficiency of unmanned driving in open pit coalmines. This paper proposes a collaborative traffic strategy between unmanned trucks for the single bucket unmanned truck intermittent process system in open pit coalmines. Based on the gap theory, this paper analyses the conflict characteristics and establishes a coordinated traffic strategy for the common intersection and merging conflicts of unmanned truck trucks in open pit coalmines, A multi-agent system simulation platform was built to evaluate the coordinated traffic efficiency under different initial average gap sizes of vehicles, with intersection traffic density, vehicle speed, and gap changes as key indicators. The results show that under the simulation conditions of this article, when the initial average gap of vehicles reaches three (four) times or more of the safe distance, the coordinated traffic performance of intersection conflicts (merging conflicts) is better, and the traffic capacity of intersections is close to the traffic capacity without conflicts.

"Sustainable development has become an issue of ever increasing importance to the mining industry. The Ernst & Young (EY) mining industry risk radar regularly shows several sustainability elements in the top ten risks, with social license the number three risk in the 2014/15 survey. This is supported by the Fraser Institute survey results of 2013 showing that 36 per cent of responding companies indicated public opposition had affected their permitting and approvals process.Addressing these issues in a strategic way across a mining business that is then translatable to actions at operational level has remained an elusive goal in the industry. In addition the environment and community issues are commonly viewed as somewhat separate from financial and production issues and as a compliance cost rather than a value add. In their Harvard Business Review paper of 2011, ‘Creating Shared Value’, Porter and Kramer outline changes in thinking required for companies to improve their business sustainably through considering the societal issues impacted by their operations and products. Along the lines of ‘doing more with less’ companies’ value chains can be redefined to reduce energy, transport, water or other resource usage leaving additional resource for societal usage and/or reducing environmental impacts. This paper explores the linking of the holistic Five Capitals-based approach with the creating shared value (CSV) concept to help businesses unleash the benefits of innovation. Previous papers have demonstrated the potential for Five Capitals approach to create strategic value through sustainable development. Building on previous work, this paper provides an overview of the current status of holistic approaches to mine management and presents the application of the CSV concept on an African mine currently undertaking capitals-based strategic planning. Cannington Mine is an underground, hard rock, metalliferous mine located in North-Western Queensland, Australia. Weld mesh is installed to prevent the failure of rock from between the installed reinforcement elements. Corrosion reduces the capacity and life expectancy of mesh and presents a real hazard to underground personnel and equipment as it reduces the effectiveness of the support system. Corrosion influences the economics of the mining operation through the need to conduct rehabilitation of the ground support which involves re-installing new mesh or shotcreting over the affected mesh to protect it from further corrosion. The requirement for rehabilitation is determined by the geotechnical engineer based on an individual visual assessment with little or no engineering input. It was identified that a more quantitative method was required that considered the safety and economic risks involved. A project was undertaken to develop a simple method to evaluate corroded mesh and to provide selection criteria for rehabilitation. A weld mesh corrosion classification has been developed that relates the average wire diameter of corroded mesh to the remaining capacity of the mesh. Accompanying selection criteria provides recommendations as to when rehabilitation may be required based on the estimated residual mesh capacity, the remaining development life, and the level of personnel exposure.

The Ernest Henry Copper-Gold mine, the third largest copper deposit in Australia, is located 35 km NE of Cloncurry in the Mt Isa-Cloncurry mineral district of NW Queensland. Ernest Henry Mining Pty Ltd (EHM), a wholly owned subsidiary of Xstrata Copper Australia, operates the mine. Approximately 10.2 Mt of ore grading 1.12 per cent Cu and 0.56 g/t Au were processed during the 2001 - 2002 financial year. The Ernest Henry plant produces copper-gold concentrate, which is trucked to Mt Isa for smelting. The Ernest Henry deposit is a member of the diverse Fe-oxide-(Cu-Au) class of deposits. The orebody is hosted within a sequence of moderately SSE-dipping, intensely altered Paleoproterozoic intermediate metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. Copper (chalcopyrite)-gold mineralisation occurs mainly within the magnetite-biotite-calcite ¦ pyrite matrix of a 250 m + 300 m pipe-like breccia body. The breccia pipe comprises two anastomosing lenses separated by a lower grade, clast-supported breccia zone. Several anastomosing brittle faults affect the macro-geometry of the orebody. Copper grade is proportional to the degree of matrix support in the breccia. The July 2002 Ore Reserve was 88.7 Mt @ 1.0 per cent Cu and 0.5 g/t Au. Resource estimation at Ernest Henry is based on a large database of predominantly diamond drill hole information. Drill spacing is typically 50 m + 50 m. Ordinary kriging is used to estimate Cu, Au, SG and IST (oxidation indicator) into model parent cells of dimension 20 m E + 20 m N + 16 m RL. The block model is comprised of five geological-geochemical domains represented by 3D wireframe surfaces. Zonal control, where samples and blocks are assigned the same domain number, is used to control grade estimation. The geometry of the domains defines hard grade boundaries across strike and soft boundaries along strike A Deep Drilling Project was initiated in August 2002 with the initial aim of testing the down-plunge extension of the orebody to a vertical depth of over 1 km. The encouraging intersections to date have resulted in a significant increase in the mineÆs open pit Mineral Resource together with the identification of an underground Mineral Resource. Added benefits of the project included an expanded and updated geological legend and an improved understanding of the host geological sequence.

There is no single factor that determines the appropriate capacity for a mining project. It is driven by the size of the resource, the capacity of the market, the availability of capital, the availability of power, the availability of water, and a myriad of other considerations. There is also no single solution to the question of how big the project should be. However, to develop a project, the study team needs to select the configuration options that it regards as the best for the project. To be able to make this selection, the study team should consider the range of available options and do so at a level of detail that gives it confidence in the conclusion but does not lead to multiple detailed design exercises. Having considered the range of options, and with a clear definition of the project owner’s objectives and constraints, the work to be carried into feasibility studies can be focused appropriately. This paper discusses the process of completing strategic mine planning to identify project configuration options to assist in the selection of the processing plant throughput rate (Capacity Study) for a large greenfield open pit mine. The processes described in this paper allow for the basis of design to be set for subsequent studies that meets the objectives at a risk profile acceptable to the owner.

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

Managing water is a key aspect of mining, whether a site is in water surplus or water deficit. Water in tailings storage facilities (TSFs) needs to be managed carefully to maximise the density of the solids, maximise the re-use of available water and to minimise the risk of water overtopping the spillway in the event of heavy rainfall. Developing a water balance models is a standard method for monitoring the major flows of water around a site. However, models created by specialist consultants are often overly complex and are not suited to being used by process plant personnel after they have been handed over to the mine operator. Models typically offer information on water management at the time that they are created, but then ‘sit on the shelf’ and offer no further insight or value for operating mines. Advisian has developed a customised water balance model for a mine in Sub-Saharan Africa, which can be adapted to other locations, to assist in managing water at the site and in particular to predict the current and future water level and volume in the TSF under various rainfall scenarios. The model was developed using Microsoft Excel and requires no specialist skills to operate. Site personnel enter in daily production, water transfer and rainfall data and then view the output dashboards to observe the current water level and volume, decant rates, licensed water abstraction and water supply versus demand. The output dashboards were developed in close consultation with the client to ensure that all of the relevant key performance indicators were included, from the perspectives of all the key stakeholders. This modelling approach focusses on the needs of the people who will actually use the model to actively manage TSFs with the need to involve the model developer as part of ongoing operations eliminated.
