Drill and blast (D&B) is one of the most important production operations in open pit mining. The resulting fragmentation of the D&B reflects in the downstream unit operation. Good fragmentation of the ore will minimise the cost of loading, hauling and crushing. The understanding of the geological model integrated with a software system for bench face surveying and planning of blast layouts based on three-dimensional images can help to achieve the fragmentation goals of the mine operation. A case study integrating these tools was carried out in a large iron mine in Brazil. The iron ore in the study area consists of hard and friable itabirites. More than three different ore types may occur on the same bench. Under these conditions, data integration becomes necessary to improve the results of blasting. A blasting plan was based on the generated geological model. The methodology helps understanding the factors that can interfere in the fragmentation process, allowing defining actions that can improve the blast design in those places that fragmentation wasn’t achieved. This condition is important for a continuous improvement of the drilling and blasting operation. Redpath Australia is using a unique mining method for the Australian underground coal industry at Kestrel Mine Extension in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland.The project involves completing two separate drifts from the surface for access to the German Creek Coal Seam located approximately 230 m below the existing surface. The scope of work is primarily the construction of two drifts; the first is 1577 m at 1 in 6 gradient and the second 1874 m at 1 in 8 gradient. Each drift has been developed by a Mitsui S200 roadheader with modifications to allow for a continuous tunnelling/mining cycle operation. A shotcrete boom has been fitted to the left hand side of the machine with the operators console located at ground level. Another operators console is elevated on the right hand side of the machine to allow operation of the rotary drill boom which is mounted on a slide rail to allow flexibility of positioning depending on the stage of the cycle. In support of the roadheader activities, an integrated conveyor system mounted on a sliding floor arrangement is able to be advanced as the mining face progresses. This sliding floor consists of four 1.5 m × 6 m sections that utilise hydraulic rams to ‘walk’ inbye, allowing room for installation of precast concrete floor panels for final floor completion. This method borrows from the tunnelling and construction industries to eliminate place-change delays in the mining cycle by enabling complete ground support installation without retreat of the primary development machine from the face. The aim is to reduce the project duration with the completion of final floor and services to within 30 m of the operating face as it advances.

On the first of July, 2012, the Australian GovernmentÆs Clean Energy Act commenced. From this point, a price of $23/t of CO2-e will apply to facilities that trip the liability threshold. This first part of this paper concentrates on the mechanics of the Clean Energy Future legislation and how it will be applied to the mining and mineral processing industry.The second part of this paper contains analysis of the data presented for typical mine operations. Methodologies for constructing a carbon strategy are also presented. This will entail determining what the objectives of the carbon strategy are, and defining what the strategic priorities for a business should be. An action plan to address the risks identified from the Clean Energy Act is also developed as part of the strategy.Details such as the advantages and disadvantages of opting into the carbon price scheme for liquid fuels are shown. Operators of mining machinery like haul trucks or excavators have very limited information about the exact distance to other equipment as well as to the natural boundaries like berms, walls and structures such as crushers. The industry is seeking solutions to provide safety and positioning. The authors have developed a solution approach which is being used in several installations. This solution consists of three parts: first robust and compact two-dimensional (2D) radar scanners that provide range and angular information of the environment especially under difficult conditions like dust, rain, snow and fog; second an intelligent data processing framework flexible enough to adopt to different machines and operation modes like speed, inclination, visibility, tire friction, GPS position, orientation and acceleration; and third a high quality and easy to use interface giving highly condensed data to the operator, not blinding the operator at night and being sunlight readable. The truth of present proximity detection sensors is that they not only have a high false alarm rate but furthermore cover only a fraction of the possible scenarios. This makes them unsuitable for stand-alone collision avoidance systems. On the other side, mine dispatch systems only deliver database and GPS information, but no information regarding the real environment. The indurad company and its Australian partner CTS (http://www.cts.com.au) addressed these aspects by developing smart productivity enhancement driver assistance tools like lane and crusher dumping assistance.An innovative driver assistance tool developed in cooperation with the coal shearer manufacturer Eickhoff and the RWTH Aachen University has been awarded with the annual research award of its customer RAG, being the largest German hard coal producer, as well as with the bauma Innovation Award in 2010.

BHP BillitonÆs (BHPB) Yandi ore deposit is a channel iron deposit (CID) in the Pilbara district of WA. The ore is predominantly a goethite-hematite pisolite and overlays a clay at the base of the deposit. Knowledge of the location of the contact prior to mining is critical to maximise ore extraction and minimise contamination from and mining of the underlying clays which contain high levels of alumina. The contact between the iron ore and the clay is highly irregular. Traditionally the contact has been delineated by closely spaced drilling û this can be expensive and since each drill hole only provides a point sample measurement, irregularities in the contact surface can be missed. In September 2001, three high resolution geophysical techniques were trialled to see if they could be used to improve the efficiency and accuracy of ore delineation. The three techniques were resistivity imaging, ground penetrating radar and electromagnetic conductivity imaging. The resistivity data showed a favourable correlation with the available ground truth data from drilling. Using this ground truth data as a calibration, an interpretation of the depth to the base of the channel iron deposit (CID) ore was constructed for the areas surveyed. A significant attribute of the method is that the position of the base of the ore is imaged continuously along the lines that are surveyed rather than at discrete points. No continuous well defined ground penetrating radar (GPR) reflections were observed from the base of the CID ore. There did appear to be some correlation between the range of echo times that reflections were observed and the drill data, however the precision to which the range of echo times could be estimated was of the order of several metres and therefore not adequate to replace current procedures. The electromagnetic data showed good correlations with the existence of shallow clays but did not discriminate between variations in CID ore depth. This technique is therefore not suitable for mapping the base of the CID ore but may still be useful as a rapid tool for mapping the position of clay bands.

FerrAus Ltd's Robertson Range and Davidson Creek Projects are located in the Hamersley Province about 100 km east of Newman, Western Australia. Significant iron mineralisation defined by an aggressive exploration program within the Marra Mamba Iron Formation is shallowly north dipping at Davidson Creek, and mainly shallowly east dipping at Robertson Range, forming part of a regional scale anticline with the granitic and greenstone basement of the Sylvania Inlier as its core. With minor exceptions, the stratigraphy is comparable with that seen in the main Hamersley Basin. Granite and greenstone basement rocks of the Sylvania Inlier are unconformably overlain by shales and volcanic rocks of the Fortescue Group. The overlying Hamersley Group is locally represented by interbedded chert, banded iron-formation (BIF) and shales of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (Nammuldi, MacLeod and Mount Newman Members), and dolomites, cherts, BIF and shales of the Wittenoom Formation. Iron enrichment occurs predominantly in the Mount Newman Member, and to a lesser extent in the West Angela Member of the Wittenoom Formation. Enrichment varies from 20 - 30 m in thickness in elongate bodies up to 3 km in strike length, and generally thins down dip. At Davidson Creek iron mineralisation is a haematite-goethite-ochreous goethite assemblage, while at Robertson Range this assemblage is consistently overprinted by a later, goethitic alteration related to 'hardcap' weathering. Near surface hardcap alteration in both project areas comprises more siliceous, aluminous and vitreous goethite. Initial exploration completed by Rio Tinto Exploration between 1999 and 2001 indicated the potential for about 20 Mt of iron mineralisation at Robertson Range. Since 2005 a detailed exploration program undertaken by Australian Manganese Pty Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of FerrAus Ltd) has defined a global indicated and inferred resource totaling 164.4 Mt at 58.6 per cent Fe (ASX: FRS 17 April 2009).

Various Australian and international regulatory bodies (Environmental Protection Authority, 2015) require an early assessment of the geochemistry of waste rock. This usually includes estimates of the locations and volumes of potentially acid forming (PAF) materials and requires sampling of the waste rock zones as well as submitting the samples for a series of tests. We know that the required number of samples will vary depending on rock type, mean sulfur levels and spatial variability of sulfur as well as total volume. The mining industry is relatively niche and complex compared to other global industries in its safety and operating environment. Whilst some of the technology required to decarbonise the mining industry will emerge from the mass market (eg batteries, energy storage solutions and renewable power generation) where exogeneous external investment and innovation will drive supply, bespoke applications such as material movement will be constrained by industry limitations. Underground load and haul equipment burns the majority portion of underground mine diesel, and typically 25 per cent of scope one and two emissions. Transitioning away from incumbent diesel engines offers a considerable health benefit to all mine workers, as well as decarbonisation achievements, and through trials there is emerging evidence of more productive equipment and realistic expectations of lower operating costs of fleet. However, new equipment and material movement systems that support these industry goals are currently approached with caution due to the pivotal role they play in delivering productivity goals, and the lack of experiential data and certainty to mitigate the supplier development risk during this technology transition period, where all resources are required to meet a booming industry. A group of mining companies and suppliers have the aligned aim to accelerate the understanding and availability of heavy haulage mobile equipment through collaboratively piloting equipment and working with suppliers and each other to aggregate market demand, encourage investment and resolve the mine design and technology choices through their involvement in the Electric Mine Consortium (EMC). This paper will outline the major challenges the industry must overcome in sourcing and adopting a zero-diesel particulate and zero-emission mine, drawn from cases and insights across ten EMC mining company members.

"Ore is the economic portion of a mineral deposit that can be extracted economically. Hence an ore type is a classification of the ore based on one or more dominant characteristics in order to enable communication between unit operations and/or technical disciplines.In project evaluation, ore types are often defined early based on geological observations by geologists and initial metallurgical testing is based around this classification even though a number of processing options can be under evaluation. However, the geological drivers of performance for each of these processes can be very different and the ore type classification for one process may not be relevant for another. In operations an ore type, as either defined in the project evaluation phase or those that evolve with additional knowledge, is unlikely to provide the knowledge required across all the unit operations. The ore type has a meaning to someone but does not necessarily for all unit operations across the value chain.Geometallurgical or orebody knowledge has evolved through the consideration of multiple processes within the value chain, the improved understanding of variability of process performance within ore types and the effect on the complexity of the mineral extraction processes. Furthermore orebody knowledge has been moving from personal based knowledge and understanding to a more process oriented approach where measurement and spatial and process performance modelling is playing a greater role. Advances in mine planning and scheduling allow for both detailed analysis of the block model and the expected extraction processing attributes across various time scales. This capability of analysing and describing the complexity still requires to be communicated to the various unit operations, which may be beyond the traditional classification of an ore type.The limitations of an ore type and potential alternatives to enable the relevant information to be communicated to the relevant groups are outlined through a number of case examples across the value chain.CITATION:Jackson, J and Young, M F, 2016. The purpose of this research was to study the calcination of lead-zinc flotation tailings from the Angouran lead and zinc flotation plant in Iran as a pre-concentration step prior to hydrometallurgical processing of the oxidised tailings. There is an abundance of these tailings in the Angouran region and making use of these tailings would help preserve national wealth and also reduce the serious problems of environmental pollution caused by the tailings. At the optimal conditions of calcining at 750 - 800¦C for 45 minutes, the sample showed a mass loss of about 19 per cent. Mineralogical analyses showed that under these conditions the carbonate minerals including smithsonite (ZnCO3), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (Ca Mg (CO3)2) decomposed to their respective oxides. Hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2.H2O) converted into willemite (Zn2SiO4) and this transformation postponed the formation of silica gel in the leach solution. The grade of zinc increased from 22.20 per cent to 29 per cent. These mineralogical changes resulted in desirable reactions in the acid leach process.

The rapid industrialisation in China has consumed large amounts of various industrial raw materials, which has left behind large quantities of industrial solid wastes produced from the processes of mining, mineral processing and smelting. The storage of huge quantities of industrial solid wastes is an obvious risk to the environment and human well-being. As the first step to fully appreciate the scale of this risk, it is necessary to carry out research for developing a pollution source environmental risk assessment system (PSERAS), especially for the typical staple industrial solid waste (TSISW). This paper aims to discuss the frame of the PSERAS for TSISW for large scale production. This system consists of two aspects: predicted factors and accidental ones, which involve physical, chemical and biological risk assessments, on-site and during transportation process. Two analysis methods, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy logic assessment (FLA) were used to handle the complexity of environment and non-quantitative data. The risk assessment system for such a complex objective is difficult and the assessment of relative factors is problematic through the usual quantitative analysis. With the proposed PSERAS, it is possible to define the risk class of pollution sources. Furthermore, the risk assessment results will be helpful to the decision-maker, especially when facing unknown risks in the environmental management of industrial solid wastes. Maintaining catch berm capacity in open pit mines through controlled blasting prevents production delays associated with managing risks associated with wall instability. A method has been developed to quantify the drill hole deviation of presplit holes at Century Mine. Different controlled blasting techniques are used to control wall quality and decrease the risk. The performance of presplit drilling, in terms of deviation from design has been investigated. A methodology has been developed to quantify the drill hole deviation in three dimensions. This methodology was converted into a series of algorithms capable of handling an extensive range of data. The methodology was applied to a case study at Century Mine to evaluate the performance of drilling on two presplit blasts. Overall, 67 drill holes were investigated in the case study. The drill hole deviation was quantified in terms of three parameters: skewness, linearity and drill hole deviation parameter. Methods for quantifying each parameter were developed. Skewness, a measure of the amount of curvature and linearity, was defined as the measure of the consistency of the gradient of the drill hole. Drill hole deviation parameter is defined as the average measured deviation of the surveyed drill hole position from the design position. Acceptable drill hole deviation tolerances for each of the defined parameters were developed by analysing drill hole deviation parameters with respect to implications to catch berm capacity. Verification of the methodology was confirmed through the comparing of the completed drill hole deviation results using both visual inspection and cross analysis for each of the three methods. Holes with an R squared value of less than 0.97 for skewed deviation were classified as having skewed deviation, while holes with a difference in gradient of 3.5 were classified as having linear deviation. The results show that 76 per cent of the drill holes had deviation. Of this, 19 per cent were skewed, 57 per cent had linearity and 12 per cent contained both skewed and linearity deviation.

"The paper introduces the structure and work processes of outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler for coal. Twenty sets of claw tipped sampler performance tests show that: The design of inner hollow cylinder-type (?180 mm) can ensure to take a coal sample with nominal top size of 60 mm. Built-in self-cleaning piston pusher ensures no adherence and blocking of the sample. The operation practices show that the mechanical sampler can operate in order for taking coal sample with up to 16 per cent of total moisture. Claw closing design can avoid sample leaking or spilling during the claw lifting and ensure the integrity of primary increment. Ultrasonic positioning device makes the sampler capture the materials no less than 10 cm from the bottom of the wagons, basically meeting the requirement taking full depth of the sample. The precision and bias test indicates that the moisture and ash have no relative bias under the sampling process; the sampling precision is in accordance with the requirement in IS013909.At present, the spiral mechanical sampler is widely used for coal sampling but there are many limitations during application, for example: It is difficult to capture a large size sample, so the size range of a coal sample taken is limited. There is easy adhering or blocking for high moisture coal, which will result in the mixture of different increments, wear of sampler and the difficulties for cleaning and maintenance of sampler. It is difficult to capture the coal sample at lower than 30 cm from the bottom of the wagons, in order to avoid damage of the vehicle. It is possible for coal sample loss and spilling during the sampler lifting, due to the unsealed sampler.For the outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler designed for solving the above problems, the opening distance of the claw is the opening size of the sampler and makes the size range of the coal sample to be taken wide. During sampling, the two pieces of claws open and the sampler rotates vertically downward to capture an adequate coal sample after reaching the specific point. Then the two pieces of claws close tight automatically to ensure there is no coal leaking or spilling. Ion exchange (IX) as a primary production technique has been applied commercially since the 1950s; its application in the uranium industry continues to be widespread and is utilised to a lesser degree in the gold industry. The majority of ion exchange applications, outside of gold and uranium, have primarily been for secondary metal recovery and impurity removal. Newer developments in the application of ion exchange, as well as changes in regulatory requirements, are bringing about the wider use of ion exchange as a primary production technique not only for high value metals such as uranium, platinum group metals (PGM), refractory metals and rare earths, but also looking at base metals such as nickel and copper. The ability to build lower-cost, safer, less polluting processing plants with smaller footprints is driving a greater interest in IX, with the main competitors remaining solvent extraction and carbon-in-pulp/leach. Environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors have always been important to the minerals industry and is now considered one of our most important opportunities (and risks). Getting it right from the beginning is critical for the minerals industry, and that starts with mineral exploration. Exploration, or the process of investigation of an economic mineral deposit, is generally low impact and short-term. Exploration operations vary in size and scale and often shift priority, focus and location relatively quickly. Australia is a highly regulated jurisdiction with different regulatory systems and requirements in every state and territory. Most mineral exploration is undertaken by junior exploration companies or ‘explorers’. Exploration companies are lean operations with limited staffing and resources, traditionally with no income apart from funds raised or work through partnerships. Funds are tight and administrative investment is minimised so that investment into activity on the ground is maximised. All these variables mean that understanding and implementation of ESG frameworks for an exploration company can be challenging. ESG is a fast-moving sector with currently multiple frameworks and reporting standards. Interest from community and government stakeholders as well as investors and off-take partners has been growing, with mandatory reporting soon to be implemented. The upcoming changes to the JORC Code will ensure that ESG considerations will be a key component of all public reporting. Resources have been developed to support explorers implement, manage and report on ESG considerations. Due to their scale, agility and direct importance of land access and social licence, many explorers are not the ‘cowboys’ (or ‘cowpersons’) of the industry, but industry leaders in ESG. Strong interest and leadership have led to innovative practices and strongly embedded vertical frameworks that directly contribute to social licence to operate.

Design of embankment dams often requires seismic analyses, or an assessment of earthquakeinduced ground and dam movements. There are a large number of cases where earthquakes have triggered sliding and lateral spreading of embankments, resulting in excessive crest settlements. In some instances, liquefaction and embankment failure has occurred resulting in loss of containment. Hence, evaluation of the effects of earthquakes on embankment dams is a critical design aspect. This paper discusses the methods and the results of a seismic liquefaction assessment and deformation analyses of a tailings dam. The tailings dam consists of a perimeter earth core rockfill starter dam which has been raised using upstream construction methods. The embankment raises (formed by an upstream clay blanket and an all-in rockfill body) are constructed over the impounded tailings, which are potentially liquefiable. Extensive field and laboratory tests were undertaken to assess the liquefaction potential of the tailings, and also determine the material properties required for seismic stability and deformation analyses. Numerical modelling of seismic liquefaction and deformation was carried out using FLAC (Itasca 2016) to predict the magnitude and spatial variation of deformations that may lead to an uncontrolled release of tailings. Primarily based on a parametric assessment of UBCSand and Finn-Byrne constitutive models, the results of the analyses are presented and compared for evaluation.

Extracting alumina from bauxite involves the production of fine-grained waste known as red mud. The highly alkaline red mud is usually neutralised by applying sea water, thickened to between 25% and 30% solids by mass, before disposal to a Tailing Storage Facility (TSF). Hydraulic sorting, settling, self-weight consolidation, and desiccation are the processes contributing to the overall volume change of the red mud after deposition. In terms of improving the blasted material quality, the company has placed emphasis on accuracy in the drilling process and documenting what has been drilled. By applying state of the art technology to the common automation platform, developed for the surface drilling market, major steps in improving overall drilling productivity and blasting performance have been achieved. Separation of fine and coarse particles as separate streams prior to flotation, and their differential treatments, could substantially increase recovery and reduce collector consumption. A series of simulations was carried out to quantify the benefits from plant scale implementation of such a treatment at the Ispat Inland flotation circuit (Minorca mine). The study involved detailed plant sampling and sample analysis to generate the data needed for simulation studies. Samples were taken from all the streams from flotation feed to final concentrate, as well as cell lips and cell pulp. Sampling was repeated for the second ore blend that was processed by the plant during different periods of a year. Sample analysis involved sieve analysis and size by size chemical analysis for total iron, magnetic iron and silica. Raw data were mass balanced, and flow rates within the circuit were calculated. Mass balanced data were used to calculate model parameters representing the existing conditions. Usim Pac was used for both mass balancing and simulation studies. Available pilot and bench scale data were utilised to define the modified flow sheet and expected performance. The simulated flow sheet included classification of flotation circuit feed by hydrocyclones. While the coarse fraction followed the existing flow sheet, the fine fraction was sent to a magnetic separator. Magnetic and rougher flotation concentrates were combined to form the final concentrate. Two simulations for each blend were carried out. The first one assumed that there would be no change in size by size kinetic behaviours of both gangue and magnetite due to this modification. This was named as the worst case scenario, in which particles had a longer residence time due to reduced flow rates within the flotation cells. The second scenario anticipated that there would be an increase in recoveries of gangue and magnetite going into froth launder due to more efficient use of collector in absence of fines. Results showed that pre-classification of flotation feed could improve the flotation recovery by 0.3 - 0.5 per cent, with the major benefit being significant reduction (40 - 60 per cent) in the amount of collector used.
