This paper is concerned with the application of a probabilistic approach to the risk assessment of mining projects.In current practice, sensitivity analysis is the most commonly used deterministic approach of accounting for the uncertainties involved in mining project evaluation, while Monte Carlo simulation is considered to be the best probabilistic method available for the same purpose. The methodology of the approach proposed in this paper is as simple as that of sensitivity analysis. However, the results obtained can be more comprehensive than those obtained from Monte Carlo simulation. Various important statistical features, such as correlation and skewness, of the basic random parameters can be easily taken into account by the proposed approach. Example studies are demonstrated. Lotus 123 was employed for the associated probabilistic calculations.

Coal Mining Land Use on the southern coalfields often preceded other land uses. Over the past century overlying land use has altered significantly, particularly with water supply storage development, road system building, railways, pipelines, electricity reticulation schemes and general urban develop- ment. National Parks were declared over coal bearing lands. Little regard was paid to the coal under the land surface by land developers, Government instrumentalities, central planners and the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board and others, and little value was placed on this valuable energy source. These bodies derived no benefit from the under- lying mineral. In these circumstances, mine operators and such surface land users were put into adversary roles. Mass sterilisation of coal resources resulted. The loss of reserves continues, although the problem has become better under- stood. An Energy Impact Statement (EIS) submission by all surface land developers has been proposed as a means to justify the impact of the development on the coal reserves Beneath.

The major copper orebody at Mount Isa is being extracted at a rate of four million tonnes per year. The method used requires an equivalent rate of back filling with (mainly) cemented fill. There were three major incentives for developing this mining system. The first was the prospect of high ultimate recovery of the orebody. The target is 100% recovery. Also the proposed stoping layout appeared to offer significant advantages in development and production costs. Finally, extensive subsidence above the northern end of the orebody could have disturbed permanent surface installations and jeopardised a possible future open cut. The full implications of this ambitious strategy were not apparent in the early years. Now, after twelve years of production the benefits are being realised and they can be weighed against the costs. Probably the most interesting result which comes from this analysis is the significance of cutoff grades and dilution factors in balancing mining and filling rates.

This paper considers two particular empi- rical models for the processes of the generati- on of hydrochemical zoning and epithermal near- surface mineralization of mercury-antimony-arse- nic formation in the discharge area of the Uzon Caldera ore generating hydrothermal system in Kamchatka. Vertical and horizontal hydrochemical zo- ning is caused by mixture of infiltration waters of the surface formation with fluid of chloride- sodium composition which are supplied up the-zo- ne of deep fault. Ore formation is caused by simultaneous existence of two geochemical barriers, namely oxidizing and reductive. The first barrier is determined by the-level of ground waters. The second one forms under the clay-opal screen un- der the influence of two factors, namely the inflow of deep reduction sulphur compounds (which are transported together with arsenic, antimony and mercury) and the generation of hyd- rogen sulphide as a result of sulphur- and sul- phate reduction. X-ray-amorphous phase of orpi- ment composition and realgar phase are formed, respectively, on the oxidizing and reductive Barriers.

"The availability of real-time data in any process control system is critical for effective management of that system. At MMG LXML Sepon Copper Operation in Lao PDR, controlling the copper grade of the feed to the leaching circuit is paramount for maximising both productivity and copper recovery. Since 2008, real-time analysis data has been available to the process engineers from the Geoscan on-belt analyser installed on the Copper Mill feed conveyor, and highly accurate results on copper grade have allowed the process engineers to strictly control blending to overcome the variability in plant feed grade. The availability of real-time analysis data is crucial, as effective sampling of this stream is both difficult and error-prone, being only a snapshot in time of highly variable ore stockpiles, as well as having significant laboratory turnaround delays. Periodic sampling is used to verify the Geoscan data as accurate. Since its installation, the copper result has been the most critical output of the Geoscan. In recent times, the process engineers have sought to utilise other results from the Geoscan to further improve and control the process. One measurement of particular interest involves the real-time measurement of calcium and magnesium as a gauge of ore feed gangue acid consumption. To satisfy this end, accurate measurement of calcium and magnesium is becoming increasingly more important and has been the subject of ongoing collaboration between Sepon and Scantech, the manufacturer of the Geoscan. The Porgera gold deposit in the Papua New Guinea highlands contains about 387 tonnes of gold. The results of its exploration show the benefits of persistence and commitment to this difficult deposit. The mineralization consists of a complex intermix of auriferous and argentiferous sulphides, gold tellurides and free gold as disseminations, veins, stockworks and breccia matrix. Its deposition was structurally contolled within a system of mafic diorite intrusions and adjacent sediments. Two styles of alteration accompany the mineralization. Gold grades vary erratically throughout the deposit. Over a period of 22 years nine phases of exploration have been undertaken by six companies or consortia of companies. Surface rock chip sampling, geological mapping followed by scout and systematic grid diamond drilling have been the most successful exploration tools. Exhaustive metallurgical process investigations and economic evaluations of mining options have been invaluable in guiding the exploration towards defining the ore body. Impetus was given to the project during times of flagging enthusiasm by several important discoveries and a breakthrough in the metallurgical processing approach. The discovery of high grade ore deep in Zone VII in 1984 turned this marginal deposit into a potentially very large gold mine.

Mathematical modelling was carried out to determine the probable convergence and vertical stress patterns around a retreating longwall panel in an underground coal mine in New South Wales. An 'Electrical Resistance Analogue' and a program called 'THREED' based on the displacement discontinuity method were used for the modelling. Parts of the obtained results are presented here and compared with some measurements of convergence at the site. The modelled and measured data agree better qualitatively, than quantitatively.

Structural geological information is widely used at the Mt Whaleback Mine, Newman, WA. Recent improvements in the structural understanding of Mt Whaleback are providing a very cost-effective way of reducing geological risk, improving the economics of mining, optimising pit design and addressing safety problems. The structure of the Mt Whaleback orebody is highly complex and has a significant influence not only on iron ore genesis but also on pit wall stability. A team approach between the Structural Geology and Geomechanics Groups has been providing excellent results to reduce geological risk at Mt Whaleback.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

An estimation geologist has many tools in their kit and using the correct one for the job is vital for creating a useful model. Reconciliation is a key step to monitor the performance of a resource model and to ensure the correct tools have been selected and appropriate parameters are set. This paper presents an example of refining the estimation methodology for a Channel Iron Deposit (CID), resulting in an improved model. Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) CIDs are unique iron ore deposits located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and contribute a significant volume to the world’s seaborne iron ore market. A problematic feature of these deposits is the irregular dispersion of clay pods that cannot be delineated with confidence within the resolution of the exploration drilling. Resource to grade control reconciliation showed an over-prediction of high-grade material in the resource model. A fresh approach was required to improve grade and tonnage predictions. Historically, clay pods were delineated using traditional wireframing techniques and estimated using ordinary kriging with hard boundaries. The new method utilised indicator kriging to estimate the probability of clay. Probabilities generated from the indicator kriging estimate were used as an additional weighting following the ordinary kriging of grades. Results showed indicator kriging improved global high-grade tonnes reconciliation, however, as expected, it did not improve the spatial prediction of clay. Based on improved reconciliation results indicator kriging has now been adopted as a suitable alternative for analogous CIDs at RTIO. These improvements benefit the mine planning process, but do not replace grade control models.

Synthetic calaverite (Au Tez) has been prepared and its physical properties checked.Simple flotation tests indicate that the recovery of calaverite should be possible using n-butyl or sec-butyl xanthate collectors under approximately pi I neutral conditions with a copper sulphate activator.Roasting calaverite in air at moderate temperatures resulted in its decomposition with the formation of elemental gold and tellurium dioxide.In alkaline oxygenated cyanide solutions, both gold and tellurium tend to dissolve. At pHs less than 14, about 50 per cent of the tellurium remains as elemental tellurium; however in very strongly alkaline solutions, essentially all of the tellurium is converted to the soluble tellurite ion (TeOl-).However, even at high pHs, the solubility of gold in the cyanide solution is still low due almost certainly to passivation effects.

Most text books on rock blasting claim that the relationship between burden and borehole diameter is linear. The statistical calculation presented here with real values from one hundred open pit and underground mines indicates that the relationship is exponential. For underground mines the burdens are consistently lower than those for open pit mines because of higher ore densities, greater confinement in blasting, and finally greater demand for well fragmented rock. The results shown in this paper are recommended to be considered in basic teaching of rock blasting technique. The formulas can be used for a first rough estimation of practical burden and spacing. The formulas do not however give any information about the fragmentation. For that purpose it is necessary to use other formulas not described in this paper.

With the progress of modern mining engineering, one of the features of which is the mining from greater depths and the hoisting of greatly increased loads, it becomes a matter of increasing importance that the engineer should be able to determinewith some degree of precision the character of the strains on the hauling rope. But a wire rope is a complex structure; it is made up of spirally-twisted strands, which in turn are composed of spirally-twisted wires, and it is not particularly easy to say exactly what happens when this "doubly-twisted structure is wound round a drum or over a pulley.. The difficulty has been generally evaded in ordinary practice by the simple device of adopting a large factor of safety for the rope-usually from 8 to 10-a factor which experience has shown is sufficiently large to cover the bending strains set "up when the rope is passed over pulleys of the sizes commonly considered appropriate.When, however, we add the stress due to the bending of the rope to the stress produced by" the direct pull, we find that the actual factor of safety is usually more nearly 4 than 10, and frequently the bending stresses in the rope are so large compared with the simple tensile stresses that their neglect may easily lead to disastrous results when dealing with problems a little out of the common run. Formed in 1965 to investigate the bauxite deposits on the Gove Peninsula, in the Northern Territory of Australia, Nabalco Pty. Limited undertook to determine the feasibility of establishing a mining operation and alumina plant of at least 500 000 tonne/year capacity. The drilling programme undertaken and the analytical methods, assumptions and criteria used to define practicably extractable bauxite are described. The ore characteristics and the interpretation of results used to evaluate the reserves are detailed. The operating techniques developed in mining ten per cent of the reserves and variations experienced between indicated and actual mining are examined and discussed.

In this study Dynamic Finite Element Modelling is used to investigate the distribution of peak particle accelerations (PPA) induced in a rock mass by a vertical decked column of explosives. The rock mass is assumed to be viscoelastic. The influence of the delay time between decking charges, the viscosity attenuation (quality factor Q), the decking configuration, and the velocity of detonation (VOD) on PPAs is examined. The results of this paper are relevant to fragmentation since the nature of the fragmentation is related to the stress magnitude and hence the PPAs. It was found that increasing the VOD, and increasing Q increases the PPAs in the neighbourhood of the blasthole. However, the VOD and rock quality factor Q have little influence upon the distribution of PPA. It was also found that an even distribution of PPAs, at a fixed distance from the blasthole, could only be obtained by increasing the ratio of charge length to stemming length. The study showed that the amplitudes and distribution of PPA surrounding the blasthole was approximately independent of the delay time between the decked charges. The modelling also shows that the particle accelerations at locations below the bottom of the charge are relatively small and so the model predicts no substantial damage below the bottom of the charge after blasting.

Monolithic packing systems have gained in popularity as a gate side packing method. However, there has been no detailed investigation to assess their underground strength behaviour. This work includes the laboratory and in situ investigation for strength behaviour determined on various monolithic packing materials namely Tekpak-XX, Hydropak-20, Hydropak-30, Astrapak-3R, Flashpak, Thyssen pack and Aquablends. A simple technique for assessing the pack strength was developed at the laboratory by using a penetrometer, of which penetration resistance can be directly correlated with the uniaxial strength of the pack. The in situ strength investigations were made on core samples obtained from three pipes inserted inside the pack, while the penetration test were made on the pack surface. The in situ results indicated that the packing material develops an inconsistent strength on various part of the pack which was mainly related to an inadequate mixing of grouts inside the pack.

The initial planning and detail design phase leading to the development of a 7.5 m internal shaft to service the deep 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa, Queensland is well advanced. The choice of internal shaft access was made over alternative methods such as a decline from existing levels and borehole hoisting. The resulting access development requirements and shaft configuration for production have been determined. Several techniques are being studied for shaft development. These include the application of blind shaft drilling and large hole reaming methods as well as conventional sinking techniques. As the 3000/3500 Orebodies extend from 1000 metres to more than 1800 metres below the surface, high stress conditions and ground temperatures ranging from 45CC to 62CC are anticipated. The effect of these on the methods being investigated to create a favourable working environment will influence the final choice. Exploration diamond drilling is in progress to confirm the geology of the orebodies so that planning for their extraction including refrigerated ventilation concepts can proceed.

There are a number of examples of how environmental factors have been integrated into the water management aspects of mining projects. The Kingston Lignite project in South Australia, Pine Creek Gold Mine in the Northern Territory, gravel and sand extraction from the Nepean River flood plain near Penrith, and the Olympic Dam Project have all illustrated that consideration of environmental factors can be integrated with project developments, with beneficial outcomes for both the project and the environment.Each of the above cases demonstrated an individually significant environmental issue, directly related to the interaction between the proposed project and its environment. In each case, careful research and an integrated approach to the problem resulted in a solution that gave both maximum protection to the environment and optimum consideration to the economic feasibility and success of the proposed project.The solutions ranged from alternative mining methods and improved waste and water management through to the ultimate objective of converting a mining project into a major water-based recreation source. These examples have set a precedent that will contribute ignificantly to the successful development of future projects.

The Weipa bauxite mining operation on the west coast of Cape York currently mines lb million tonnes of crude ore per year from the Andoom and Weipa mines. Andoom ore is trucked up to 4 km to a rail load station and hauled 20 km by train to the Beneficiation Plant. Weipa ore is trucked up to 7 km to the Beneficiation Plant. Increasing haul lengths and production requirements have led to a progression of larger two axle rear dump trucks and currently he intrcducticn of 145-tonne, three axle L t Dm dump trucks. bith the introduction of the Andoom a operation in 1972, the decision was made to use a railway system to haul crude ore from Andoom to Weipa. This system has proved to be successful from both an economical and operational view point. Due to the successful combination of a truck and rail haulage operation in Andoom, future :evelopment of orebodies requiring increased haul distances and increased production tonnages will probably result in extension r>f the railway system to compliment the trucking operation from the mine face.
