Previous studies on the blast furnace raceway zone have been undertaken at three levels of scale, namely: laboratory models at low temperature, hot models which simulate coke combustion in the zone, and tests performed on operating and dismantled blast furnaces. Coal washability data can be used for assessing coal quality. However, the techniques of using these data to solve quality problems differ from one mine to another and certain problems may never really be investigated due to limitations of the available techniques. One promising way to overcome these limitations is by correct application of geostatistics.A geostatistical study on coal washability data was undertaken based on a data set of closely spaced in-pit bore cores. These bore cores were analysed consistently over a relatively simple geological area. The average distance between the drill holes was about lOOm. There were 78 drill holes available for the area after deleting the erroneous bore cores. During the study, nine extra closely spaced drill holes were drilled within a single mining block.A procedure to construct two coal quality models, a kriging or cokriging model and a simulation model, was proposed. The modelling results for the data above are discussed and results of a mine scheduling exercise based on the models developed are included.

In 2002 the Argyle Diamond Mine upgraded the process plantÆs recrush circuit to include a High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR), or High Pressure Rolls Crushers (HPRC) as they are termed in the diamond industry. HPGR have generated considerable interest over the last decade, though there are still technical/processing unknowns to its effectiveness as a primary diamond ore crusher.The upgrade of the Recrush circuit at Argyle Diamonds has gone a long way to answering some of the key questions, and thus it has reduced the unknowns to a level more acceptable to the industry.This paper focuses on the results from the HPRC at Argyle, in particular the performance of the studded wear surfaces, comparison of energy efficiency against traditional quaternary cone crushers and the resultant increased liberation. Issues that have arisen, including edge wear of the studded surfaces, will be discussed and the steps taken to reduce this issue are presented.

Wind blast is the sudden movement of air displaced by the massive collapse of roof rock in underground openings and is experienced as a high velocity flow of air through adjacent workings. The initial flow in the outbye direction is often followed by 'suck back', that is a reverse flow of air towards the newly created void. As part of the Wind Blast Project, undertaken by The University of New South Wales, Department of Mining Engineering, a physical model was constructed. One of the functions of the laboratory wind blast model is to provide insight into the dynamics of the interaction between the falling strata and the air being compressed below. During a collapse, some air is expelled into the surrounding roadways while the remainder penetrates towards the top of the roof elements. In this paper two aspects of the rock mass properties which influence the phenomenon are considered: - Flow paths through the falling roof element, ie the permeability of the roof element; - Bed separation prior to the fall which introduces a void above the roof element. A series of tests was carried out utilising the physical model in order to investigate the relationships between the flow of air through the simulated roadways, the variations in gauge pressure above and below the falling roof element, and the acceleration and terminal velocity of the latter, all as a function of the flow paths through the roof element and of the extent of the void above. The results of comprehensive tests using the wind blast physical model suggested that the time history of outbye air flow in the simulated roadway comprises two distinct phases. a) A primary phase, characterised by a high velocity flow of air which exhibits a peak and corresponds to the period during which the roof element is accelerating. The peak air velocity is related to the acceleration of the roof element. b) A secondary phase, characterised by a residual air flow of a lesser velocity than in the primary phase and corresponding to the period during which the roof element is falling at its terminal velocity. The velocity of the residual air flow is directly proportional to the terminal velocity of the roof element. In a monolithic collapse of a roof element it was shown that the presence of flow paths in the roof element increased the air velocity in the roadway in both the primary and the secondary phases. The presence of an air-filled void above the roof element, on the other hand, influenced the air velocity only in the primary phase by increasing the peak air velocity. The overall duration of the process was however decreased as a result. 'plug type' collapses, where roof failure extends to the ground surface, potentially generate the highest peak air velocities likely to be encountered during wind blasts.

Following the success of calcrete sampling at Challenger, calcrete sampling has been widely adopted as the primary exploration technique for gold exploration, in the Gawler Craton. Calcrete is uniformly distributed over large areas and produces discrete gold anomalies. This allows drilling to focus on specific gold anomalous targets. However, despite widespread use of calcrete sampling, very little is known of the origin of calcrete in the Gawler Craton, and the link between calcrete gold anomalies and primary mineralisation. In an attempt to understand this association Lisa Gibbons recently completed an honours project at the Old Well Prospect approximately 45 km SSE of Tarcoola. Her work is part of a collaboration between CRCLEME, MESA and MIM Exploration. At Old Well, a calcrete anomaly (>10 ppb Au)covers an area approximately 7 km x 2 km with a peak value of 97 ppb Au. The study looked at the regolith as a whole, processes of its formation and nature of mineralisation within it. She was able to combine previous calcrete and drilling results with her own observations. The results from this study highlighted problems in relating surface calcrete anomalies to in situ gold mineralisation.

Mine-derived solutes from Energy Resources of Australia’s (ERA’s) Ranger uranium mine have been closely monitored for decades. Ranger is surrounded by the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park and is upstream of Ramsar convention wetlands. Modelling of groundwater flow and solute egress from mine wastes to surface waters has helped ERA successfully assess closure options and secure intermediate regulatory approvals during the site closure process. Potential environmental impacts were assessed using groundwater modelling in support of three ERA applications involving disposal of tailings-derived mine waste. Model results were an important part of the basis for obtaining regulatory approval. Three case studies are presented describing the three applications and how the groundwater modelling supported approval of the applications. For case study #1, INTERA supported ERA in addressing stakeholder concerns in 2017 regarding two aspects of tailings deposition in Pit 3. The first was the potential for flow of tailings fluid into the surrounding formations during tailings deposition. The second was the difference in post-closure magnesium (Mg) loading to surface water for two tailings deposition scenarios. INTERA developed a two-dimensional (2D) model that showed excess tailings pore pressures would not cause outflow and solute egress from the pit during deposition. INTERA’s three-dimensional (3D) models demonstrated that post-closure Mg loading to creeks for both tailings scenarios differed marginally and would be a small fraction of natural creek Mg loads. The modelling results helped avoid delays in completing tailings deposition driven by stakeholders’ environmental concerns. Case study #2 consisted of supporting ERA’s 2019 request for approval to change the tailings deposition method and final tailings level in Pit 3. INTERA’s model results for the permitted and proposed deposition methods showed minimal differences in post-closure Mg loading to creeks. The model results helped ERA obtain the needed approval for the tailings deposition method and water and tailings levels in Pit 3. For case study #3, INTERA modelled the comparative impacts from leaving the entire contaminant plume from the temporary tailings storage facility (TSF) in situ or excavating a portion of the contaminated material from beneath the TSF floor and placing it in Pit 3. The modelling results supported an approved TSF contaminated material application important for ERA to stay on schedule and minimise both closure costs and environmental impacts.

Mochia mine, in culmination of depillaring operations, fired India's largest underground pillar blast consuming 145 tonnes of explosive and yielding 0.55 million tonnes of ore in June 1994. To protect main mine structures (situated at a distance of 250 to 350 m from the blast site) from resultant ground vibrations, the charge per delay was restricted to 2300 kg. The post-blast observations revealed that no damage was caused to these structures. However, the damage assessment survey of the mine workings situated in close proximity revealed a general trend in consonance with the distance from the blast and found to be well correlated with peak particle velocity.

The Paleoproterozoic Hitura Ni-Cu deposit in western Finland is in an ultramafic igneous complex composed of two subvertical plug-shaped bodies embedded in intensely migmatised felsic gneisses. The ultramafic complex is not far from a north-south trending graphitic and sulphidic gneiss zone interpreted to be a primary sulphide-graphite unit in the metasedimentary sequence. The sulphide accumulation exists as a zone parallel to the contact of the northern ultramafic body. The ultramafic rock types, now mainly serpentinites, have primarily been olivine adcumulates in the core grading to olivine orthocumulates and pyroxenites towards the margins. Coarse-grained felsic pegmatite veins injected serpentinite where they now exhibit prominent zoned alteration rims of chlorite, antophyllite and talc. The serpentinite core of the body was primarily an olivine adcumulate derived from a tholeiitic or high-Mg basalt parental magma with about 11 wt % MgO. Metamorphism and alteration have totally changed the igneous mineral compositions and the rock types are serpentinites (from olivine adcumulates), ambhibole-bearing serpentinites and amphibole-chlorite rocks (from pyroxenites). As the result of CO2 alteration talc is an accessory mineral throughout the serpentinite. Like silicates, also sulphide minerals are altered. In the core of the body the low-grade sulphide dissemination still reveals primary igneous interstitial forms. The core sulphides are now mackinawite, pentlandite and valleriite instead of primary igneous pyrrhotite and pentlandite derived from Mss. At the marginal zone the heavy dissemination and net-textured sulphides display pyrrhotite-pentlandite-magnetite intergrowths with magnetite films along cleavage of sulphides, mackinawite in pentlandite and exsolution textures of different low-temperature pyrrhotite phases as the result of alteration processes. Mechanically weak rocks, complicated structures and textures of the ore, magnetite and mackinawite intergrowths in pentlandite and readily-floating MgO silicates cause problems in exploitation of the deposit. Thirty two polyacrylamide flocculant samples were selected from the wide range offered to the Australian coal industry. An extensive test program was conducted to consider the properties of the flocculants, the substrates, the process conditions and the water chemistry encountered in coal preparation plants. The study indicated that flocculants with molecular weights of 12 to 14 million and degree of hydrolysis around 40% gave the best "average" performance over a wide range of process conditions. The pick-up and filtration of fine coal was demonstrated on a pilot scale to be a critical function of flocculant properties. This study also showed that the agitation intensity during flocculation was a critical parameter in determining the settling rate of the slurry and the clarity of the resulting supernatant. An electronic meter to measure agitation intensity was designed, constructed and tested to demonstrate how, for the first time, laboratory results can be implemented in operating plants.

The Macquarie Dictionary defines `information' as: knowledge communicated or received concerning some fact or circumstance; (in communicating theory): a quantitative measure of the contents of a message. For mining companies investing in data capture and information processing technology for operations management is a key issue. Beyond producing performance related information that employees can relate to it is being able to deliver that information into the workplace when it is required, to the employees that can utilise it. To be effective the data needs to be received and understood as `information'. The technology is now available and proven to enable `information' to be delivered into the mining workplace adding value to the activities performed by mine employees. The application of computers and information technology in the mining industry has typically been limited to the resource definition and planning stages, accounting and administration and the process plants that treat the ores and minerals. The mining extraction processes that consume expenditure and determine output in a mining operation occur in an environment dominated by unpredictable events and variable conditions. The mining operation has long been regarded as an inexact science conducted in unpredictable circumstances with many independent variables affecting the output and resultant cost of production. Financial accountants keep track of expenditure and management accountants analyse the cost of production usually on a weekly or monthly basis but all this effort can't affect the outcome, that was determined by the real time events and variations of circumstances over a week ago. Such reporting and analysis can result in conclusions being drawn about what improvements can be made and how you might do better next time, but generally the data is not detailed enough, is inaccurate or misrepresents the real issues. The capital investment required for any mining operation is substantial and comparable to other industries such as manufacturing. The performance and utilisation of manufacturing plants is usually closely monitored down to the lowest level of detail. Many modern plants are controlled and optimised using programmable intelligent devices and monitors display real time performance to the operators and prompt them to make informed decisions to maximise production and minimise wastage. Technology suitable for the mining industry is now widely available and has proven to be a reliable and powerful tool for the optimisation of mining operations. This paper focuses on the latest information technology developed by Modular Mining Systems that has been implemented in mining operations worldwide. The benefits reported by the mining companies utilising real time information technology over the past 15 years have generally related to optimisation of truck fleet allocation and material blending. Some mining operations have reported improvements in equipment utilisation of greater than 20 per cent. With the development of real time graphical display screens in the operators cabins the benefits of information delivery can be harnessed to make employees more effective in the workplace.

IGO Ltd’s (IGO’s) Nova Operation (Nova), which is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA), mines and processes nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) sulfide ore from the magmatic Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger), which is hosted by the Mesoproterozoic age high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Albany Fraser Orogen. Over its 56-month life-of-mine (LOM) operations to 31 December 2020, Nova has processed 5.63 Mt of ore grading 2.04 per cent Ni, 0.86 per cent Cu and 0.07 per cent Co from its underground mine. At the end of 2020, both the Nova-Bollinger JORC Code reportable Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) and Ore Reserve estimate (ORE) were >90 per cent classified in the highest JORC Code confidence categories of Measured Mineral Resource and Proved Ore Reserve respectively. The high JORC Code classification confidences assigned to the Nova-Bollinger MRE and ORE results from the 386 km of surface and underground diamond drill testing of the deposit to a nominal 12.5 by 12.5 m pierce point spacing in mineralisation. The close spaced high-quality drilling and bulk mining method employed at Nova has effectively removed the need for any grade control modelling outside of the MRE process. Importantly, having only the one fully drilled out deposit being mined and only the one process plant, Nova’s reconciliation process is in the fortunate situation of not being confounded by issues such as external ore sources and constant updates as new grade control information becomes available. IGO’s Nova reconciliation processes are focused on reconciliation ratios that quantify operational period differences between the MRE and ORE head grade and tonnage forecasts and the process plant head actuals. These metrics have been used to identify key reconciliation issues and have initiated several studies into the causes for specific reconciliation results, which are discussed in the paper. In late 2020, a period of sustained poor reconciliation results led to the recognition that increasing the understanding of risk between the MRE and ORE should be investigated. To assist with modelling stope level risk within the mine plan and subsequent reconciliation, an attempt was made to develop a formula to quantify ‘stope risk’ from MRE metrics such as sample spacing, kriging efficiency and so on

Since the advent of plate tectonic modelling, the Ramu-Markham valley has been thought the site of a classical island-arc/conti- nent collision zone. In this interpretation the units south of the Markham Valley are held to be island are / micrcontinental mate- rial accreted to Australia and those north of the valley are thought to represent a separate Finisterre island-arc terrane. Recent remapping by the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea shows: (1) there is no terrane boundary along the Ramu-Markham valley (2) the Finisterre Volcanics are probably part of either a fore-arc sequence or oceanic plateau obducted onto a microcontinent/ volcanic-arc composite terrane, accreted to the continental Australian plate. A new tectonic model is proposed for northern PNG and involves: (I) Eocene to Late Oligocene subduction below a microcontinent remote from Australia to produce the Sepik are and related intrusives, the Finisterre Volcanics (fore-arc or possible oce- anic plateau), together with the Alife blueschist. (2) obduction of the Sepik arc in Late Oligocene-Early Miocene times over the advancing Australian plate. This resulted in crustal melting, some of the products of which are the Mid- dle to Late Miocene Akuna and Bismarck intrusive complexes of the Maramuni arc. (3) obduction of the Finisterre Volcanics began in Early Pliocene times and continues today. (4) post-Middle Miocene mineralisation is the result of melting after obduction of the Sepik microcontinent.

The continued exploration of the major brown coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley has resulted not only in the discovery of huge additional reserves, but also in new concepts of the stratigraphy and structure of the coal seams in that area. The author sets out his interpretation of the new information which has become available over the last six years.A section of the paper is devoted to the quality of the coal. As the chemical composition of these brown coals has been discussed in some detail by previous authors, only the major constituents and the heat value of the coal are dealt with in this paper. Some of the variations in quality are related to the geological structure.The occurrence of underground water and its relation to open cuts is dealt with briefly.INTRODUCTIONThe Latrobe Valley Tertiary Basin is almost entirely covered by a layer of Post Tertiary sediments which mask the underlying rocks and their structures. As a result, the geological understanding of this area has had to await the comprehensive drilling campaign in search of brown coal, initiated by the Victorian Mines Department in 1917, and subsequently carried on by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The first detailed geology was published by Herman (1922), and this was followed some 25 years later by papers by Edwards, and later Thomas and Baragwanath, to which reference will be made later in this paper. Herman included a section on the geology of the Latrobe Valley in his book Brown Coal, which was published in 1952.Since that time a considerable amount of new information has become available from the continued drilling carried out by the Commission. In addition, geophysical work carried out by the Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources has assisted in the defining of geological structures in the area.

While water represents a major proportion of the mineral pulp processed in flotation circuits, relatively little research effort has been committed to understanding and controlling the influence of water quality on this process. Historically, this probably stems from the perception of water as an inert transport medium. However, the changing attitude towards water as a valuable resource, has given impetus to increasing requirements to use relatively impure make-up water supplies such as treated effluents and a high proportion of internally recycled water. In turn, this has resulted in the need for a more detailed focus on process water quality and its control to minimise adverse effects on sulfide flotation. Along these lines, prior to commissioning of a new concentrator at their Cadia Hill Gold Mine, Newcrest Mining was proactive in examining potential water sources and the influence of water quality on flotation of their copper/gold bearing ore. An extensive water quality survey of all major potential water supplies to the concentrator was undertaken. The flotation performance of the Cadia ore in each of these waters was investigated on a laboratory scale. The results of these studies identified that water quality could indeed have a significant influence on the flotation process. Since operations at the Cadia Hill concentrator began, water quality surveys of both make-up water sources and recycled flotation circuit waters have been carried out on a regular basis. By doing this, a database of water quality has been established which can be compared with plant performance. In parallel with the water quality surveys, a series of laboratory flotation tests have been conducted using a standard ore and waters from various streams to monitor changes in flotation performance as a function of water quality. These tests have indicated that certain water types may have a significant influence on plant performance. More research is required to better understand the impact of water quality on sulfide flotation. This understanding will help operators to minimise adverse effects, while maintaining the best utilisation of available water resources.

The GPM Gold Operation has been employing an Albion Process™ plant at its Sotk (Zod) gold mine in Armenia since 2014. Long term data from the operation is now being published for the first time. The data presented includes concentrate throughput, as feed to the Albion Process™ plant (tonnes per day), sulphur grade in concentrate (% S), total sulphide sulphur oxidation in the Albion Process™ plant (% SOx) and gold recovery from Albion Process™ plant residues (%). The data provides a basis for evaluation of the effectiveness of the commissioning, ramp up and operation of the Albion Process™ plant. Notwithstanding the impact of a slower concentrator commissioning than expected, the plant demonstrates Series 1 behaviour on McNulty ramp up curves, indicating successful commissioning and fast ramp up. Interrogation of the data and operational experience indicates that this successful operation is a result of a process that is flexible, robust and stable, one that was designed well based on solid testwork results and pilot plant trials during the study phase undertaken by Glencore Technology and Core Resources, and where the local operators were provided with appropriate training in operation of the plant. This paper outlines the feasibility assessment conducted to explore the possibility of constructing two submarine water supply pipelines beneath the Ma Wan Channel in Hong Kong using either horizontal directional drilling or tunnelling. The Ma Wan Channel is a major shipping channel in the Northwest New Territories, which separates Ma Wan Island from the mainland. The challenges faced by the projectÆs designers included space limitations on either side of the channel, marine department restrictions on construction activity within the channel and selection of a suitable crossing alignment and profile given the channelÆs depth, irregular sea floor topography and complex geology. The existing geological information indicated the proposed alignment would cross granitic and volcanic formations, which would likely be faulted. The primary concerns with horizontal directional drilling were:the length, diameter and depth of the crossing were at the limit of precedent experience in rock; the lack of available space at both the entry and exit sites; and whether the technique would be flexible enough to cope with the anticipated range of ground conditions. The primary concerns for tunnelling were: the possibility of encountering large inflows of high pressure groundwater; andthe possibility of encountering disturbed ground within the fault zones which could flow if not properly treated. As a means to evaluate and mitigate these technical risks for both construction options, a directionally drilled pilot hole was used to investigate the ground conditions along the proposed pipeline alignment. The pilot hole results indicated that either directional drilling or a closed face TBM drive were technically feasible crossing options at a crossing depth of 80 m. The results also indicated that either an open face TBM or a drill blast drive would need to be constructed at much greater depth because of the presence of highly permeable, disturbed ground in mid-channel at this crossing elevation.

Mineral commodity prices are subject to volatility over both the short and longer run – driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time. Such market dynamics influence mine operating decisions depending on the interplay of company-specific and mineral market factors. The company factors include corporate financial strength and price-risk management strategy, as well as mining practices and methods at the operation level. The critical mineral market factor is the price of the ex-mine product. This results from underlying microeconomic and macroeconomic root-causes pertaining to mineral supply and demand, in addition to the activities of financial participants within commodity markets.Significant changes in commodity prices of an extended duration, either up or down, remain the principal influence upon mine economics – and therefore on mining practices too. Accurate and precise forecasting of commodity prices (and of relevant exchange rates) continues to prove elusive both to mineral economists and market analysts. Thus, at any given point in time, there are often widely differing price forecasts available for both the relevant commodity and currency. Companies as a result are unclear how to respond in practical operating terms to such price-side uncertainty – other than to manage incremental capital and operating expenditure. Typical company – and industry financier – responses to the difficulty in predicting future mineral commodity prices are to take measures to manage uncertainties in mining project revenues and costs. These operating practices are prudent – yet come at an economic cost: that is, lost revenue and margin opportunity is inevitable in any such system not easily capable of responding to price volatility in the market. The mine of the future will seek to capture this lost economic opportunity. The underground mining of a narrow vein hard rock orebody is a capital and labour intensive method of extraction. Due to the nature of underground mining it is difficult for higher level managers to physically see the efficiencies and inefficiencies of a particular method. Extraction methods and sequencing often need to be altered from the original planned methods as a result of mine developent, providing more in depth information as it progresses. As a result of these issues contract mining of these orebodies is common practice. There are several types of contract structures for the purpose of underground contract mining with many complex permutations of them that reflect the different needs of each individual company and orebody. The different contracts are arranged dependent on the mining companyÆs desire to transfer or, alternatively, embrace risk. This presentation gives a brief overview on these different methods and their various advantages and limitations with regard to small scale and narrow vein underground mining. With respect to these different contracting methods, the presenter reviews the mutual growth benefits of emerging partnering opportunities, specifically with regard to smaller explorers exploring and developing prospective mining tenements. The specific advantages to small explorers include the resource flexibility and speed of project development that private mining contractors can provide. Given the contracting methods that are available, there is potential for small private mining companies to gain minor stakes in major projects and major stakes in medium sized projects by employing innovative contracting solutions to provide mutual benefits to the parties. As a direct result of the Mining Industries need to improve efficiency and production in Open Pit type operations, the size of haulage units have increased dramatically. This trend has continued such, that the majority of dump trucks operating in Open Pit operations are in the 170 ton class. Continued mining in existing locations has meant that the increase in vertical lift and resultant grades, and increases in hauling distances are making electric drive systems unsuitable. This is largely due to the electric drive systems heat limitations on major propulsion components. With these mining requirements in view and the present limitations on electric drive systems in mind, Komatsu have been developing the Komatsu HD1600M.
