Increasing global demand for commodity metals and capital and the greater operating costs of mining and metal production present significant challenges for the metals mining industry. Current conventional technologies may not be feasible for processing deposits of declining grade, challenging mineralogy or those that occur at increasingly greater depths. To overcome these issues, the development of a step-change technology such as in situ recovery (ISR), which reduces mining and avoids milling costs, may be vital in ensuring future economic metal production. ISR has been used extensively to treat porous soft rock deposits such as the water-soluble salts, sylvite and halite. Although ISR has typically been used for mining conventionally uneconomic uranium ores, it has also been used less frequently for the treatment of other restricted permeability hard rock deposits, such as those containing copper and gold. The reason for the limited uptake of the technology for hard rock mineralisations is primarily due to low natural rock porosity and permeability and hence poor response to available lixiviant. However, additional challenges include solution containment, management of groundwater and regulatory, ecological and societal requirements and expectations. CSIRO has focused on understanding the challenges of hard rock ISR and identifying global capabilities that can contribute to developing the essential enabling technical areas required to realise ISR. Specific focus areas include geochemistry and advanced resource characterisation; drilling and controlled rock-breaking technologies; solution chemistry and environmentally benign lixiviant systems; lixiviant delivery systems and ‘subsurface mixing’; subsurface hydrology and reactive transport mechanisms and models; downstream processing options; legal, social and environmental aspects; and techno-economic modelling. This paper will discuss ISR challenges including industry feedback focused on addressing this issue, gaps preventing ISR from being applied in practice, capabilities to overcome these gaps and the development of a collaborative approach to making hard rock ISR a reality.CITATION:Kuhar, L L, Breuer, P, Robinson, D J and McFarlane, A, 2015. The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating the treatment of refractory gold ores. Chlorination in the treatment of refractory gold ores is applicable in many low-grade gold operations. When usable, this treatment provides an economic means of consuming sulfides and deactivating disseminated organic carbon. Chlorination, however, is a pretreatment technique that requires the neutralization of the chlorine prior to leaching the ore with cyanide. Research by the Bureau has extended the present chlorination technology to allow for the recovery of gold without the use of cyanide and allow treatment of some ores presently deemed untreatable by gold operators using cyanidation or chlorination/cyanidation techniques. Chlorination without carbon of two carbonaceous ores extracted between 1 and 20 pct of the gold; however, carbon-in-chlorine (CICL) treatments resulted in about 90-pct recovery with a reduction in carbon loading. A statistical design campaign for stripping metallic gold from the carbon loaded in a chlorine environment demonstrated elutions exceeding 90 pct.

The Lihir deposit in Papua New Guinea (PNG) contains an estimated mineable reserve of 454t (14.6M oz) of gold in refractory sulphide ore. The Lihir Joint Venture has submitted a proposal to the PNG Government to develop an open pit mine and to install a process plant and associated infrastructure facilities on Lihir Island. The proposed process plant will employ whole-ore pressure oxidation technology, has a design capacity of 2.825Mt/a of ore containing 7.20 sulphide sulphur, and is expected to average 19.3t/a (620,000 oz/a) in gold production during its first 12 years of operation.An extensive program of process development testwork and feasibility engineering was completed to establish the process plant design for the Lihir Project. Summary results of this test-work as well as key design criteria, the process flowsheet, and major equipment selected for the commercial plant are presented and discussed.

The accepting of the geologist as part of the mining industry team has only become a reality in the last fifty years in Australia. Commencing in the 1920's it received a check in its progress during World War II. Since then it has had its highs and lows to extremes not hitherto experienced. The recent mining boom and the succeeding slump have provided opportunity to examine more critically and positively the role of the geologist in the mining industry. The future is examined, not in crystal ball fashion, but in terms of selected specific aspects. Suggestions are offered concerning these aspects.

The heavy media cyclones at Argyle Diamonds are subjected to extremely abrasive service conditions and have been the subject of a development program from the time the first ore was treated in the AKl processing plant. In the past ten years the cyclones have been re-engineered from a standard DSM design, in which some components would only last four days, to the current Argyle design in which the minimum component life is 175 days. Development has focused upon the elimination of turbulence in the cyclone and combating unavoidable abrasion through the use of appropriate wear materials.

The 1986 PACLARK Expedition established that propagation of a seafloor spreading zone into continental crust has created a complex series of volcanic basins on the floor of the Western Woodlark Basin. In addition to abyssal basalts, felsic volcanic rocks were recovered - especially at the leading edge in the extreme west. A recent deposit of hydrothermal Fe-Mn oxides was discovered on an axial seamount of basaltic andesite, and seawater plume anomalies suggest current hydrothermal venting elsewhere. As a modern analogue for the settings in which ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide orebodies probably formed, the Western Woodlark Basin warrants further investigation.

The thick coal seams of the South Maitland field are the only ones in New South Wales which have been worked extensively to heights beyond 3.8 m (nominal "thin" seam height). Under shallow cover only minor difficulties were experienced in developing first workings but later the widespread occurrence of incidents of spontaneous combustion and the growth of "creeps" extending over large areas gave the field its own peculiar problems. As the mines have driven under deeper cover extreme difficulties in forming development roadways have been experi- enced. Various methods have been adopted in an attempt to overcome the problems of the field.

Within the Ross River Basin, the following types of water were collected and analysed; 19 streams, 24 wells and bores together with 19 samples from the Ross River Dam. The waters were found to contain up to 269 ppm of silica and, although they meet the requirements for industry in all other respects, this extremely high figure means that two basic guidelines should be followed. All steam generation units, except those less than 150 psi should employ hot lime zeolite softening, demineralization or evaporation to remove silica. Cooling systems should only operate on a once through basis.

Laboratory experiments have been used tostudy a wide range of convective processes which are significant for the formation of rocks and the ores that form in them. Metal-rich solutions flowing through the sea floor produce 'black smoker' chimneys; both the size and structure of a solid chimney and the height to which the plume of effluent rises above it can be predicted using model experiments. Analogues of processes in solidifying magmas can also be studied using crystallizing aqueous solutions. The release of lighter or denser residual fluid as crystallization proceeds, and the resulting compositional convection, have a vital influence on the differentiation of initially homogeneous magma and on the evolution of stratified magma chambers. Mixing during the replenishment of magma chambers, and its dependence on the rate of filling and on the fluid properties, have also been studied on the laboratory scale. Experiments carried out in different geometries have been applied here to the formation of platinum and chromite ores and komatiite lavas. Larger-scale mantle convection, in particular the motion of subducting plates and plumes rising from the core-mantle boundary, also determine the tectonic settings in which ore bodies form. These phenomena too can be usefully investigated in laboratory experiments using very viscous fluids.

This paper serves to outline the circumstances and causes of the air-blast that occurred at Northparkes Mines in November 1999. It describes the design of the mine, the geotechnical issues surrounding cave propagation and the cave monitoring systems that were in place prior to the event. A short description of the air-blast that followed a sudden collapse is given. Details of the risk assessment process that evolved during the rectification process are provided with their subsequent modification to form the core of a major hazard monitoring process. The system is in line with the recommendations given by the Coroner resulting from the inquest into the deaths of the four people who lost their lives during the air-blast.

The Yanacocha district hosts the largest and most significant acid-sulphate, high-sulphidation deposits in Per· with total production, reserves and resources of over 27 million ounces of gold. Several other smaller high-sulphidation systems are also recognised in the Cajamarca region including La Zanja, Sipßn, Tantahuatay, and San Nicolas. These each have reserves/resources of between 640 000 and 800 000 ounces of gold. Gold deposits in the Yanacocha district are hosted in an extensive volcanic field. Flow domes have intruded precursor pyroclastic rocks and flows that are interpreted as part of an earlier intermediate multi-vent volcanic complex. The larger, contiguous Yanacocha Norte - Sur and Encajon gold deposits are spatially associated with late-stage diatreme breccias. At La Zanja extensive acid-sulphate alteration is associated with the margins of the small San Pedro caldera (6 +4.5 km), nested within the larger, less well-defined La Zanja caldera (19 +24 km). The inner caldera is resurgent with abundant magmatism expressed as several flow dome complexes located on the caldera rim, and shallow level intrusive stocks. Gold mineralisation is associated with a WNW-trending structural corridor that transects the southern margin of the San Pedro caldera. On the eastern side of the La Zanja caldera there are a series of younger andesitic eruptive centres, some associated with acid-sulphate alteration and gold mineralisation. The Sipßn deposit occurs in one such centre with structurally-controlled gold associated with a NE-trending silicified structure developed within a sequence of andesitic tuffs. In conclusion, although a number of high-sulphidation deposits are recognised in northern Per·, their settings and styles of mineralisation are all quite different. Smaller deposits generally have strong and obvious structural controls. In the larger Yanacocha deposits the structural controls are less obvious, and mineralisation is disseminated in porous or strongly fractured and brecciated silica. Erosional levels are probably a significant factor, with disseminated mineralisation at higher levels, and structurally-controlled mineralisation in more deeply eroded deposits.

Lithological units have been classified geotechnically with mechanical tests and discontinuity measurements from the GRD Macraes Limited, Macraes Gold Project and Rotowaro coal mine open pits, New Zealand. Using these measurements slope stability probability classifications (SSPC) have been quantified based on an adaption of Hack's (1998) SSPC system which places less influence on rock quality designation and unconfined compressive strength than previous slope/rock mass rating systems. The Hack weathering susceptibility rating has been modified by using the chemical index of alteration values from XRF major element analysis. Slaking and weathering is an important parameter in slope stability in the Waikato Coal Measures and Otago schist lithologies and hence a non-subjective method of assessing slaking/weathering in relation to the chemical index of alteration has been introduced. Other major components of this adapted SSPC system are the inclusion of rock moisture content and rock strength anisotropy effects on slope stability. This paper explains the systematic approach of using the adapted SSPC system to classify slope stability probability. The main modifications of Hack's SSPC system are the introduction of rock intact strength derived from Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria which has been adapted for varying moisture content, weathering state and confining pressure. It is suggested that the subjectivity in assessing intact rock strength within broad bands in the initial SSPC system is a major weakness of the initial system. Initial comparison of rock mass friction angles, cohesion and strengths derived from the adapted SSPC are compared with results derived from modified Hoek-Brown criteria, MRMR and SMR classification systems. The advantage of the modified SSPC system is that slope stability probability, maximum batter and overall slope height and overall slope angle for open pit walls can be predicted in addition to orientation dependent and orientation independent stability. Examples are provided, using the modified SSPC system to predict initial optimum pit slope designs in proposed greenfield mine sites.

Horizontal perforated-plate baffles were shown to improve the cleaning efficiency of a flotation column when processing coal from two sources. The baffles consisted of flat plates with holes large enough to avoid plugging problems, and they improved the washing efficiency by making the flow patterns in the column closely approach plug flow. Tests with varying amounts of baffle open area showed that the optimum was between 30 and 40 per cent open area, which effectively prevented backmixing without seriously reducing capacity. The baffled column had previously been tested under ideal conditions with good results (87 per cent pyrite rejection at 85 per cent combustiles recovery), and so the tests reported here were intentionally run with difficult-to-float coals to determine the benefits of baffling under adverse conditions. For an original coal feed containing 38 per cent ash and 3.23 per cent total sulphur, the baffled column could recover 84 per cent of the combustibles while rejecting 84 per cent of the ash and approximately 54 per cent of the pyritic sulphur. Without baffles, the column recovered 88 per cent of the combustibles while rejecting only 76 per cent of the ash and 45 per cent of the pyritic sulphur. Subsequent tests with a dye tracer showed that the baffles reduced entrainment by approximately a factor of five, while the recovery was reduced by only a few per cent. Overall, the loss of capacity due to the baffles was more than offset by the improvement in product quality.

Precious metal deposits containing fine-grained disseminated or dispersed gold-silver form by reactions between metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids and sedimentary host rocks. Host rock permeability and chemical composition exert a primary influence on the fluid movement necessary for any primary dispersion halos to form around ore bodies, and determine whether a disseminated style orebody itself will even form. Where the mineralized rocks are relatively unfractured the margins of the orebodies exhibit abrupt decreases in gold content, and strong corresponding decreases in the contents of other metals. Primary dispersion patterns of this type are difficult to recognize and commonly are only a few meters (or less) in width. If the host rocks were well shattered and broken before mineralization, remnant amounts of the hydrothermal fluids may be dissipated in fractures lateral to or above the ore zones. This causes geochemical anomalies to form with clays and silt- size silica within the fractures over distances of up to at least 30-50 meters away from the main orebodies. The tendency for large primary dispersion halos not to form around these deposits explains the disappointing results from so many drilling programs where no multi-gram gold-grade material was even found: if large areas and apparent large volumes of rock contain one gram or less gold that likely is the "orebody" and not a halo effect around high grade mineralization.

The formation of banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted high-grade iron ore deposits in the Hamersley Province, Australia has been debated for decades. Although a structural control on their formation is widely accepted, only the roles of large-scale structures (ie faults and folds) formed by brittle and ductile deformation have been considered to date. However, the deformation of multilayered sequences in the Hamersley Province (ie the Mount Bruce Supergroup), with their contrasting rheological behaviours, creates challenges for understanding the complex structural framework at regional to deposit scales, including the significance for mineralisation and orebody location.Our approach to understanding these complex relationships is based on an established principle of structural geology, which is to extrapolate microscale structures to deposit-scale structures and vice versa, supported by state-of-the-art 3D modelling techniques. Complexly deformed hand samples associated with the Mount Tom Price iron ore deposit (Hamersley Province, operated by Rio Tinto Ltd) have been analysed and visualised with 3D explicit (Move™, Midland Valley Ltd) and implicit modelling software packages (Leapfrog™, AranzGeo Ltd) and supported by microstructural investigations (optical and X-ray microscopy) and fieldwork.Our study shows that the deformation of BIFs in the central Hamersley Province is controlled by microscale chemical processes (ie dissolution precipitation creep) due to rheological differences between iron oxide and chert layers, contrasting fluid flow properties and layer thickness variations. These processes account for the removal of vast amounts of silica, its transportation by diffusion in the presence of a fluid and reprecipitation at low-pressure sites. Utilisation of modern 3D visualisation tools, can improve our ability to correlate between different datasets, and thus to produce more accurate geological models. Here, we present an application of such techniques to the Century Zinc Deposit, northwestern Queensland, Australia. This stratiform orebody is the second largest Zn resource in the world (167.5 Mt at 8.2 per cent Zn, 1.2 per cent Pb, and 33 g/t Ag). It is hosted in the Page Creek Syncline affecting Mesoproterozoic shales and siltstones of the Wide Supersequence of the Isa Superbasin. As in other deposits, (eg McArthur River, Lady Loretta, George Fisher and Dugald River), the mineralised sequence is bound by an important regional structure, the Termite Range Fault, which partly intersects the deposit along its Eastern side. This fault is thought have been active during sedimentation and probably also during mineralisation of the lowest part of the Wide Supersequence. The anastomosing geometry of this fault system and crosscutting relationships with other NE trending structures indicate that it was reactivated several times from Mesoproterozoic to at least late Devonian times (>1000 million years in total); as a result, the ore sequence is subdivided into several fault blocks.Using two different computer modeling packages (GOCAD and 3ds max), we have reconstructed and restored the stratigraphic horizon with the highest Zn content, realised a series of isopach maps for each mine scale stratigraphic unit, plotted the three-dimensional distribution of Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe and SiO2, and have begun to evaluate the degree of correlation between thickness changes and sulphide zoning. With this approach it is possible to better understand the timing of mineralisation from a genetic perspective, because the origins of the orebody are controversial. Three-dimensional reconstruction is a vital tool for identification of syn-sedimentary and post-sedimentary fault activity. In conjunction with sulphide precipitation, these are factors that greatly influence the stratigraphic thickness distribution. Post-sedimentary deformation can be recognised directly by core logging and pit mapping, but the effect of tectonic movements during sedimentation (growth faults in particular), that represents a substantial variable when we attempt to reconstruct basin evolution, is difficult to evaluate without this methodology. The 3D models improve our understanding of the local basin architecture, identifying similar grade characteristics at different structural levels and thus suggesting that much faulting and folding are post-mineralisation events. In addition, we identified several growth faults adjacent to thickened layers, representing two possible sedimentary depocentres. These thicker domains apparently relate to the highest Pb content. If further analysis of rocks, thickness and grade distributions support this preliminary correlation, then a syn-sedimentary model for mineralisation might be applied, and would contrast with the sub-surface model for mineralisation of Broadbent et al (1998).

Organisations which consistently perform to high success levels do so because they plan it that way. By using tools of total quality management, the potential to continually improve all safety processes exists. The successful integration of total quality measurement principles used in the improvement of safety processes, and the measurement of performance-based activities allow for prevention of accident causing scenarios and performance improvement.

The performance of in situ, shallow water covers in controlling acid generation was evaluated at four recently decommissioned pyritic uranium tailings sites at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The tailings are acid generating, having a pyrite content of approximately five to ten per cent and a very low to non-existent alkaline buffering capacity. Adverse market conditions led to the closure of all operating uranium mines in the early- to mid-1990s, followed by rehabilitation and decommissioning of mine and waste management facilities. In order to control acidic drainage, all new and active tailings areas at Denison, Quirke, Panel, Spanish-American and Stanleigh mine sites were re-engineered to provide in situ submersion of these tailings under shallow water covers. The tailings impoundment dams were upgraded and reinforced or in some cases reconstructed, to minimise seepages and provide a minimum 1 m depth of water cover. With the exception of Stanleigh mine, which was closed in 1996 and rehabilitated during the late-1990s, the water covered Tailings Management Areas (TMAs) at other sites have been in operation for a period of six to nine years. The surface water quality at these sites is maintained at near neutral pH conditions by periodic addition of lime slurry to the established water covers. Additional treatment of effluent is provided as required to meet the discharge water quality standards. The performance of the established water covers at the sites was evaluated by analysing the annual equivalent limestone consumption data. The results were compared with the performance of an older, decommissioned Nordic TMA, which was rehabilitated using revegetation techniques. The water covers at these sites are performing as designed and acid generation has been reduced to low levels. Based on the total amount of yearly equivalent limestone required to maintain water quality in the water cover and at the effluent treatment plant, it is concluded that acid generation rate at the Denison TMA has reduced to less than 0.15 per cent of its pre-water cover conditions during normal operation and rehabilitation periods. In comparison to the revegetated Nordic TMA, the acid generation rates at Denison and Panel TMAs have decreased to less than 1.6 per cent of that at the Nordic TMA. The acid generation rate at the Quirke TMA was comparable or only slightly lower than that at the Nordic TMA because of its unique terraced cell configuration, having tailings in five hydraulically interconnected cells at different elevations. Historic acidity and oxidation reaction products, accumulated during normal operating and pre-water cover periods, are flushing from upstream locations to downstream cells, thus requiring much higher equivalent limestone additions for acid neutralisation and effluent treatment.

A general review of grinding mill steel liner evolutions/developments in recent times. The driving force behind these developments has been the mill operators desire to minimise the nett cost of their operation. These developments have resulted from a team approach between supplier, operators and reline crews. The move towards larger diameter high aspect mills, faster mill speeds, pebble ports and the use of large diameter grinding media has affected the traditional liner designs, which is placing higher demands on the supplier to meet these new working parameters and expectations. Operators are also taking closer ownership in the liners being supplied, as demonstrated by the development of their own mill liner specifications. This paper outlines some of liner developments and changes undergone at various milling operations around Australia and overseas (such as Cadia Hill, Kidston, Ok Tedi Mining, PT Freeport, etc) and where to in the future?
