Mines, after becoming operational, often retain the same support and reinforcement designs developed in the feasibility study. These designs are conceived from limited drilling data and regional experience, thus having an empirical flavour. Empirical designs are perceived to be conservative, catering for a variety of failure mechanisms, which are not always present in mine development drives.This begs the question: If you were to invest in the necessary resources to obtain sufficient data and complete the required analyses for the different development drives in the mine, to engineer a support and reinforcement scheme with the capacity to match the demand of the rock mass, what is the difference in cost when comparing an empirical design to an engineered design?To answer this question, mine tunnels with different geometries and orientations, where detailed structural data was available, were selected for a comparative design exercise. Material cost, development cost, cycle time and professional fees for engineered and empirical designs were estimated. The outcome is summarised in the following paper that discusses the process followed and the results of the design comparison.

The coal resources of the Singleton- Muswellbrook area of New South Wales are of major importance to Australia, and are likely to play a significant role in meeting the expanding demands for energy in many countries of the world. Coal resources of 45 thousand million tonnes of which 15 thousand million tonnes lie at a depth of less than 200m have been estimated. The history of coal mining in the area commenced in the mid 1800's and has been one of fluctuations in production but of rapid expansion in more recent years. It is destined to become the largest coal producing area in New South Wales. Coal is being won from the area by strip mining, open pit mining and by underground means. The techniques involved are described. The area is well endowed with infra- structure such as modern towns, railways, road- ways and access to port facilities. Production of both coking coal and steaming coal is expected to rise significantly within the next 25 years. A large proportion of the State's anticipated increased production to between 117 and 177 million tonnes by the year 2000 is likely to come from this area.

Attritioning has been a method of improving mineral extraction for over 60 years, however it is only recently that an understanding of the mechanism employed and the improvement in efficiency that have been achieved.The paper will discuss these improvements and how to overcome the problems that have been raised. At present there is a dearth of information on the correct design and operation of these machines.The paper will address these issues as well as fluid on the Zeta potential, micro shear, retention residence time and pilot plant operation.A study on the hydrodynamics of attritioner operation has been identified and will be discussed.Surface chemistry, clean lines of attrition material and the treatment of fines significant advances in the understanding of attritioning highlighted.CITATION:Baguley, W, 2013. Deep hard rock underground mines tend to experience high stress as such drives exhibit dynamic responses attributed to a rock burst variant (strainburst). This dynamic behaviour is difficult to predict, and every effort is made to devise the appropriate dynamic support system for its associated failure restraint. This paper outlines the back analysis and the support scheme design for an underground decline that exhibited damage from a dynamic strainburst occurrence. It employs a decline section that experienced a dynamically loaded strainburst that initiated rock fragment ejections. The procedure involves a preliminary structural analysis, a seismic intensity measure, and a rock mass simulation to determine the static stress concentration and ground support system response. The numerical simulation is conducted in FLAC3D which employs the advanced strain-softening IMASS constitutive model governed by two Hoek–Brown (HB) bounding yield surfaces. To account for the post-peak brittleness response associated with strainburst the plastic strain multiplier () is adjusted to 0.0 < < 1.0. The back-analysis shows that the occurrence was initiated by a low-intensity seismic wave that superimposed an extra stress component to the initial static stress which triggered rock fragment ejections. Additionally, the appropriate support scheme comprised of Weldmesh, Fibrecrete, static (split set) and yieldable (Kinloc) reinforcements is recommended and implemented. Thereafter, the bolt’s efficiency is evaluated based on the axial force and elongation capacities and then compared with the published bolt performance data. The evaluation results show that the maximum bolt axial force (0.1 per cent) and elongation (0.006 per cent) are below the designed capacity and rupture strain.

The Goondicum Crater industrial minerals deposit is located about 30 km east of Monto, Central Queensland, Australia. Early exploration programs in the 1990s found alluvial ilmenite along the banks of the Burnett River. This mineralisation was traced upstream to the Goondicum Crater. The Goondicum Crater is a topographic feature centred on a roughly circular 6 km diameter layered gabbro complex. Significant ilmenite, apatite, titano-magnetite and feldspar mineralisation are present in a weathered horizon up to 25 m thick. After several drilling campaigns in the Crater and subsequent feasibility studies, the project was developed by Monto Minerals Ltd, an ASX listed company, in 2007. However, the project never achieved production performance expectations and ran out of commissioning funds. The company subsequently went into voluntary administration in August 2008.In 2009, the RMM Capital group, of Brisbane, took control of Monto Resources Pty Ltd, and renamed the company Belridge Enterprises Pty Ltd (Belridge). Belridge commissioned a redevelopment study aimed at recommencing mining and processing operations. As part of the redevelopment study the authors planned a drilling campaign, managed a quality control program and developed a block model. This paper describes the drilling program, analytical procedures, quality control procedures and the preparation of the block model.The block model for the resource estimate was created using 1 m high blocks, wireframes defining the main material types, and 2.5 m thick horizontal search ellipsoids with a radial pattern. The deposit was ‘flattened’ prior to modelling. To assist with the economic evaluation of the project, each block in the model was assigned a net dollar value based on economic parameters provided by Belridge, including anticipated revenues and costs. This modelling technique allowed for efficient investigation of various scenarios and was used extensively in the development and optimisation of the project’s financial model. At a zero net value per block, comparable to a break-even cut-off grade of four per cent ilmenite equivalent, the Indicated plus Measured resource is estimated at 51 Mt, averaging 4.1 per cent ilmenite, 1.9 per cent apatite and 2.5 per cent titano-magnetite.

Testing of in situ seals in underground coal mines is critical to determine seal integrity and to provide safe working conditions. In the wake of the 2006 Sago Mine explosion, the United States of America (USA) promulgated the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act (USDOL, 2006) which required mines to install 827 kPa (120 psi) rated seals or monitor and maintain the atmosphere behind existing 345 kPa (50 psi) seals. The purpose of developing the regulations was to prevent the breaching of seals in the event of an explosion in the sealed area.While seal design and construction is carefully regulated in practice, the construction of seals is difficult to monitor, as many are constructed under various mine conditions and the methods rely on prescribed placement of the seal material. Further examination of installed seals is limited to two-dimensional visual inspection and atmospheric and convergence measuring devices. These methods do not accurately reflect the integrity of the seal and cannot detect changes, deterioration, or defects within the seal.If detection of defects, deterioration and damage is not possible, unexpected communication between the active and sealed areas may result. Additionally, the ability of the seal to withstand explosions may be compromised. Non-destructive testing (NDT) of underground mine seals is necessary to investigate if the seal properties have been altered and if the seal remains functional as a barrier between active areas and sealed areas of the mine. The legacy of underground coal mining may be a land surface which, in parts, may be unstable in the long term. A case study analysis has been undertaken to explain some of the hazards and how the risk may be assessed and managed.The Ipswich Coal Measures were extensively mined with shallow underground workings, which now underlie a number of suburbs in the eastern side of the city of Ipswich in south eastern Queensland. The area was subject to underground mining from the 1840s to 1997. In general, the mines were small, family-owned operations that were restricted by complex geology, interactions with neighbouring operations and ownership of surface facilities. The oldest available mine plans date back to the late 1890s.The residents in these mining areas have a long history of unexpected mining subsidence events. A level of risk management for property owners has been implemented by the Ipswich City Council, which requires a mining subsidence risk assessment to be submitted as part of building applications for property development in the areas suspected of having mining subsidence risk. DTL2 contract C916 was awarded in March 2009 for S$340 M. This contract includes two mass rapid transit (MRT) 1100?m long bored tunnels using two slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with an internal diameter of 5.8?m, two cross passages and 135?m of cut-and-cover tunnels The contract also includes the design and construction of a new underground station including station entrances, subway links, architectural finishes and external landscaping. The station, located at Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jalan Jurong Kechil will also double as a civil defence shelter.The works included significant traffic management in a dense urban area in order to create the working areas whilst keeping the requisite number of traffic lanes. This involved numerous utility diversions and included the removal of a 33-year-old pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) over busy Bukit Timah Road. The station and tunnelling works were completed on time, including a ‘dock and dismantle’ TBM retrieval and subsequent breakthrough of the separating wall.This paper will detail the methods and solutions used to construct the tunnels and stations, with a focus on the requirements for construction of the station to be a civil defence shelter if required. This involved solutions to tying reinforcement and placing concrete to high standards in a restricted space, as well as the incorporation of heavy blast doors and other associated protective measures. The efforts of the management team resulted in the project being awarded first prize in the 2011 Land Transport Authority’s Annual Safety Award Convention and being named winner of the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) award at the 2011 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards. As well, McConnell Dowell won a Green and Gracious Builder Award (Excellent Category) from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).CITATION:McDonough, R, 2014. The Mount Morgan eopper-gold orebody is contained within a series of Mid-Devonian volcanics which occurs as a roof pendant within Permian granite. The ore minerals comprise pyrite, chalcopyrite, and local aggregations of magnetite and pyrrhotite. Silver-rich gold (electrum) is disseminated through the ore usually in ultrafine to sub-microscopic dimensions. Accessory minerals include marcasite, digenite, chalcocite, covellite, sphalerite, bismuthinite, molybdenite, calaverite, petzite, and cassiterite.Very minor accessories include cubanite, tetrahedrite, galena, arsenopyrite, hematiIe, goethite, and rutile. The gangue minerals are quartz, predominantly, with minor amounts of chlorite and sericite.Study of microtextures of a representative suite of specimens from Mount Morgan does not reveal any criteria indicative of metasomatic replacement but does show, in the case of pyrite, evidence strongly suggestive of annealing recrystallization. Other textures in pyrite indicate porphyroblastic growth of the iron sulphide.It is inferred that the Mount Morgan orebody is genetically related to the volcanic rocks and was later contact metamorphosed by the intrusive granite or by the series of intermediate to basic dykes that transect inmine area. On this basis the Mount Morgan orebody would be a contact metamorphosed volcanic hydrothermal deposit emplaced, according to recent studies, along a pipe-like zone of brecciation.

Dr Wark said: I have not come to Broken Hill to tell you how to conduct flotation operations; indeed, during my short stay here I have already learned much concerning the process, of the many difficulties which have been overcome, and of those still awaiting solution. My purpose tonight is rather different. All who have been concerned with the operation of the flotation process must have wondered, like myself, why the process is possible at all. In particular, why can minerals which are heavier than water be made to l10at to its surface; why do certain minerals float while others do not; and what are the functions of the added chemicals?I have been asked to describe tonight some of the ways which have been adopted in the Melbourne University laboratory in an endeavour to find answers to these. questions. Knowing that you are just as interested in them as we are and, furthermore, appreciating that were it not for the co-operation of the Broken Hill companies our researches would not have been possible, I regard it as a high privilege that I should have been invited to tell you of our work. Before doing so, I would like to tell you the reasons why the work was started and for whom it has been carried out. "Current methods for acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation revolve around insulation of the waste from oxygen in the atmosphere with water and dry (soils and liners) covers. Both are of limited effectiveness and present significant drawbacks. Furthermore, while they reduce oxygen influx, they reduce but do not prevent ARD.The inert gas mixture (IGM) technology has been designed to overcome the deficiencies of gas transfer into tailings and waste rock materials across the surface and instead block oxidation by controlling the transfer of oxygen from the atmosphere. Inert gas is injected into the mine waste at low flow rates and the positive but low flow purges the oxygen that tends to diffuse into the sulfide waste across the surface. The positive flow of IGM compensates for inward oxygen diffusion and creates a pressure drop across the cover layer preventing inward diffusion of oxygen and, hence, acid generation.The IGM processes are evaluated in this paper: theoretically, with a review of the theory of ARD and the current state of knowledge about the performance of notably dry covers as atmospheric oxygen barriers via models to predict the performance of the IGM technique practically, with a bench-scaled experiment.The results demonstrate the effectiveness of IGM to prevent oxidation of sulfide minerals and ARD in waste rock. The laboratory experiments further identified key variables to be used to monitor performance and control efficiency of IGM, which is now awaiting field-scale application.The IGM technology is a patented process by Terraquest Technologies Ltd (Canada) in USA, Canada and Australia. The IGM technology can be cost-effectively manufactured on-site with commercially available compressors and gas filtration membranes. Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited operates one of the largest producing gold mines in the world. The annual production of 76 tons of gold from 12 million tons of ore treated is obtained mainly from underground sources. Daily some 6.6 km of stope face is blasted and 41 tons of explosives is used to break the rock. The mine employs 45 000 men of whom 35 000 work underground. The company operates nine large vertical shaft systems of which seven extend more than 2000 m below surface and an eighth, currently being sunk, will bottom at 3700 m below surface.

As the resources sector becomes tougher with rising costs and cyclical metal prices, mining companies need to continue to reduce their costs and do more with less. Many new resource projects fail to come in under or on budget based on Feasibility Studies. Particularly, capital expenditure (CAPEX) proves difficult to achieve for resource projects. A number of resource projects have failed because of aggressive plant CAPEX cost cutting resulting in projects with no surge capacity and are unable to achieve design throughput. In addition, the plants are not operable because of the omissions. In recent times many businesses have also experienced the &quot;costs&quot; of simply implementing aggressive operating &quot;cost cutting” measures as a strategy for solving business performance problems. This paper looks at technology driven, employment related, luxury cuts, department cuts and restructuring cuts. In the past companies used an incremental approach based on the use of past budget information as an integral part of the budget construction process going forward. The use of performance reports and Management Information Systems (MIS) is examined along with the role of continuous improvement in achieving sensible cost cutting.

Grade Engineering® involves the planning, integration and operation of coarse preconcentration techniques to reject uneconomic material as early as possible in the mining value chain to improve the quality of ore delivered to mineral processing activities. These preconcentration techniques include screening for natural and induced deportment of grade to finer size fractions during blasting and coarse breakage, sensor-based measurements of grade and mechanised sorting at particle or bulk scales and coarse gravity separation. Over the last decade, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE), with the support of its participants, has developed a framework for the holistic evaluation of economic and production impacts attributable to these preconcentration techniques. The framework combines the characterisation of preconcentration responses, geostatistical modelling, process modelling and simulation of downstream and upstream production impacts and the optimisation of strategic mine plans to quantify changes in net present value due to different preconcentration strategies. This framework has been applied to evaluate preconcentration techniques at numerous metalliferous operations and can also be used to quantify changes in the environmental metrics for energy, water and steel consumption and emission, tailings and waste rock production. This paper collates the results of these Grade Engineering® studies to show the range and magnitude of economic and environmental impacts attributable to preconcentration. The studies have shown that rejection of uneconomic material prior to mineral processing activities can have a pronounced improvement in energy, water and comminution steel productivity, emission intensity and the profitability of metalliferous mining.

The development of present methods of pillar extraction has evolved from the very earliest of hand mining operations which were limited in scope by venti- lation and transport considerations. Conservation and safety considerations also have led to the current shortwall operations with conventional equipment and powered supports. The shortwall methods have had significant effects on safety, costs, con- servation, flexibility, and other aspects of pillar extraction. The present stage falls short of the ideal but is some guide to prediction in what direction may lie the ideal methods for the future.

In the flotation of fine particles, problems arise which do not occur with coarse-ground pulps. For example, the presence of colloidal or near-colloid- al gangue particles gives rise to ex- cessive entrainment in the froth, with reduced grade as a consequence. If the values themselves are finely dissemi- nated, the recovery usually decreases as the particles diminish in size, so a low recovery is combined with poor grade. Sutherland and Wark (1955) referred to the complications arising from the presence of fines, indicating (p.382) that fine grinding "introduces diffi- culties that have not yet been satis- factorily overcome". At the time of writing, very little work has been done on fines flotation specifically, yet the groundwork has been well laid. The availability of better scientific instruments, together with the general advance of understanding in a wide variety of relevant research fields, has taken us a long way toward finding the reasons behind the problems as- sociated with fines, and also toward finding practical solutions. It would be useful to define what is meant by "fine" particles before going further. To some extent, the definition is somewhat elastic as far as flotation is concerned, because the density of the particles has a bearing on whether or not they act as fines. But in general we are dealing with particles less than about 20 pm in Diameter.

Any future developer of underground mining on the Bendigo goldfield will need to understand the unique geology and gold occurrence of this field. The development and sloping system employed will be primarily designed around these unique features. Modern techniques and equipment used in narrow vein mining will be applicable in this situation.The purpose of this paper is to examine the important geological features of the field as well as the known historical occurrences of the type of gold deposition in the ore bodies. This information will point to a system of development and extraction which will accommodate these features.

The Wonawinta silver project near Cobar in NSW is under development by Cobar Consolidated Resources Limited (CCR). RMDSTEM Limited is part of the owner’s team for feasibility, design, engineering, construction and commissioning.With a 51Moz resource CCR is one of the largest pure silver players in Australia. A probable reserve of 14.3Moz has been defined for a mine life of approximately five years. The silver mineralization is contained in host rock composed of clays and oxidized limestone. The ore also contains on average 1.3% lead as cerussite, and other minerals. A simple circuit consisting of slurrying of the ore, gravity treatment of the coarse fraction to recover lead, silver extraction using CIL, elution and the Merrill Crowe silver recovery process, has been developed.The “value engineering” approach to this development pioneered over the past decade by RMDSTEM has meant that RMDSTEM has delivered the bankable feasibility study at a cost of $0.07 per resource ounce. It is highly cost effective making efficient use of shareholders funds as well as being very time efficient. This paper describes the application of the value engineering approach to the development of the Wonawinta project.

The El Teniente mine produces more than 340 000 tonnes of fine copper per year from an industrial complex of underground mine, concentrator and smelter. Mass caving methods are employed to deliver approximately 95 000 tpd of ore to the mill, from a number of sectors underground, each sector being in effect a large-scale mine in its own right. This mining activity has faced challenges over the course of the last century such as:the capacity of the underground mine has been expanded to maintain and increase output of fine copper; the increasing size of the ore fragmentation forced to change the mining method to achieve the high productivity and profitability required in the business; and to modify the mining methods to continue mining at depth with safety. Fundamental activities in these mining methods, for the successful initiation of caving and subsequent draw, are:undercutting the base of the block or panel by blasting; and excavating of drawbells. The undercutting design evolves mainly on the height of the blasting to manage the change on ore fragmentation. The methodology move away from incorporating massive areas, typical of the block caving method, to a continuos blasting, typical of the panel caving method. Drawbell design changes on geometry, dimensions and sequence of excavation to deal with a corse ore fragmentation and the resolution of mining difficulties in the form of major rock bursts and collapses of production facilities. This paper focuses upon the evolution of the undercutting and drawbell design used at El Teniente mine and techniques under consideration to deal with future caving operations to provide the bulk of the daily production for the foreseeable future.

Located 350 km west of Sydney and 20 km outside Orange, NSW, lies the Ridgeway Gold Mine û NewcrestÆs flagship Underground Gold Mine. Key to success at Ridgeway has been the fast tracked development of the 3.8 km, 1 in 5.3 conveyor decline which houses the 850 t/hr conveying system feeding the dedicated Ridgeway Concentrator, built adjacent to the existing Cadia Hill Concentrator. Eroc was contracted to develop the steep conveyor decline, drawing on its personnel and experience from past metalliferous, tunnelling and coal mining projects to complete the ambitious schedule within 12 months. This paper deals with the complexities and experiences in safely delivering what is understood to be one of AustraliaÆs steepest declines of any substantial length in a metalliferous mine.
