Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

The transition of mechanical cooling refrigerants from their inception in the 1800s through to the current day has been driven by several factors. Original refrigerants such as sulfur and carbon dioxide, chloromethane and ammonia, whilst effective came with toxicity and/or flammability issues. In 1930 DuPont trademarked a new synthetic refrigerant known as Freon® 12, this development was the introduction of ‘chlorofluorocarbons’ (CFCs).Throughout the 1930s and 1940s additional synthetic refrigerants were developed, namely Freon® 11 and Freon® 22. Due to their non-toxic and non-flammable characteristics, synthetic refrigerants were extensively used for domestic, commercial and industrial applications for the next 60 years.In 1985, one of the first scientific papers suggested a potential mechanism linking CFCs and areduction in the density of the ozone layer. In 1987 the Montreal protocol is ratified; it is the first UN treaty to be ratified by every country on earth. Due to CFC’s ozone depletion potential (ODP), the treaty required the consumption of CFC’s to be reduced by 50 per cent over the next ten years. By 1996 the phase out of CFC’s (Freon® 12) is completed, the phase out of HCFC (Freon® 22) refrigerants comes into effect.On 1 January 2018 the phase down of HFC’s begins. Whilst having zero impact on the ozone layer HFC refrigerants have high global warming potential (GWP). As we transition through the HFC phase down (2018–2035) we are beginning to see the emergence of what some consider to be the fourth synthetic wave, hydrofluoro-olefins (HFO’s). HFO’s and their blends have zero ODP and low GWP’s, ranging from 150 to less than 1. The reduction in GWP with HFO’s typically comes at the expense of flammability, which is not ideal. Each refrigerant has its optimal application, therefor when considering refrigerant choices for mining systems, a complete assessment of the environmental, health and safety, efficiency and commercial impacts should be considered now more than ever.

The development of a design-and-construct tunnelling project in Australia from its concept to its construction requires designs to be prepared and reviewed at several distinct stages prior to documenting ‘for construction’. On recent projects the post-tender stages have been variously called 30 per cent—70 per cent—100 per cent; or concept–substantial–final; or system definition–preliminary–critical. The design is reviewed at each stage by the designer’s internal reviewer, the contractor and its independent advisor(s), the owner and its independent advisor(s), the project’s independent certifier, proof engineers and often third-party stakeholders and their advisors. Documentation for each stage often dominates the design effort, at times distracting from design. This paper presents the authors’ experience of this design-and-review process. Comparisons of design budget and actual design spend and design program implications are presented. It is postulated that a subtle change has occurred in our industry that has diminished the value of the design dollar. Is there a better process? In order to mitigate the effects of climate change, our society must be able to drastically reduce its CO2 emissions. As the metallurgical industry is a considerable contributor to these emissions, new greener technologies must be invented and developed. One option could be the direct production of metals from oxides using renewable electricity. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of using high-temperature molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) for iron and ferrochrome production. FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by Thermfact Ltd and GTT-Technologies) was utilised for estimating a feasible equilibrium electrolyte composition, and the experiments were conducted at 1550–1580°C in conical alumina crucibles with iridium wire as the cathode and platinum wire as the anode. The sources of iron and chromium were either pure FeO powder or industrial chromite pellets. Voltage was applied to the electrolysis cell for 6 hrs and the resulting current was measured, along with oxygen concentration in the off-gas line. The electrolyte comprised of SiO2, Al2O3, MgO and CaO. First, the effect of FeO concentration on iron reduction efficiency was investigated using only pure oxide powders as starting materials. The results indicated that 10 wt per cent FeO mixed with the electrolyte resulted in more efficient iron reduction compared to 20 wt per cent. In further experiments, industrial chromite pellets were ground and mixed with the CaO-free electrolyte. Iron and chromium reduction efficiencies were higher when approximately 19 wt per cent of the total sample mass consisted of pellets compared to increasing the pellet amount to 37 wt per cent. Generally, the chromium solubility in the liquid electrolyte was relatively low, and most of the chromium was confined to the spinel solid solution, from where its dissolution to the liquid electrolyte was very slow, resulting in slow reduction kinetics. For larger scale applications, economically more viable electrode materials should be investigated.

The explosives demolition of a post-stressed, steel reinforced, concrete road bridge in Australia’s capital city, Canberra. The bridge was 50 m from the new replacement bridge, 320 m from community structures and within five kilometres of the national parliament buildings. The job required multiple overlays of risk assessment, public relations, safe work procedures, specialised blast design, environmental predictions and flyrock controls. Project stakeholders included Worksafe, Roads ACT, bridge owners, consulting structural engineers, community groups and road users. The bridge precincts, including a major road underneath, had to remain operational to peak traffic in the days leading up to the demolition. The break-up and removal of debris had to be executed in just two days from Friday to have the road beneath re-opened for Monday morning city-bound traffic.In Canberra, all explosives demolitions are now viewed with particular caution after a demolition in 1997, during which a young girl was killed. Any approval requires that Explosives Regulations, AS2187 2006 and Worksafe processes are satisfied, and a convincing case presented for blasting as a safe and viable option.Our design used specialised shaped cutting and blasting charges to sever in situ concrete beams and tendons and to shatter components of the stressed concrete bridge assembly. We include comments on structural engineering reports dealing with pre-weakening mechanisms. The benefit of pre-weakening is that it reduces the amount of explosives needed to safely complete the job and facilitates quick removal of debris after the shot. The complementary skills of the team, each one an expert in his field, resulted in a highly successful demolition, praised by authorities as an outstanding example of controlled use of explosives.

"Determining the deportment of economic and environmentally significant elements in sulfidic mine materials (eg ore, gangue and waste) requires the use of advanced microanalytical techniques, including electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Sulfidic boulders were sampled from an acid rock drainage impacted ephemeral stream adjacent to historical copper-silver workings at Baal Gammon, northern Queensland. The abundance and deportment of a range of trace elements and precious metals were analysed in these samples. Whilst many of these elements represent a potential environmental risk if leached from sulfidic rocks into streams in the surficial environment, significantly some of these elements (eg In, Sb and Co) represent specialised metals that are currently considered to be in critical supply.Sulfidic waste rock material at Baal Gammon is dominated by chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. Microanalytical investigations revealed that chalcopyrite contains significant quantities of In, Sn, Ag and Zn either substituted directly into the crystal lattice or occurring as discrete sphalerite and stannite inclusions. Arsenopyrite, which may comprise more than 50 per cent of some boulders, is notably enriched in Sb, Co and Ni but also contains inclusions of sphalerite, chalcopyrite and stannite. In contrast, pyrrhotite contains no trace elements of economic significance, but instead represents a likely contributor to acid generation during oxidation in the surficial environment. Trace metals (eg In, Sb, Co, Ni, Zn) are liberated during sulfide oxidation of these boulders in the surficial environment, generating a metal-rich, low-pH leachate.Fe-oxides precipitated as rinds on the surface of these boulders under low pH conditions also contain abundant As, Bi, Sn, Cu and Zn. Abandoned or historical mines represent potential sources of metalliferous drainage that poses potential environmental risks to water and habitats. However, sulfide-rich historical waste rock, stockpiles and processed waste (eg tailings) at abandoned mines may also represent significant sources of critical (eg indium) or other significant metals (eg Sn) that if liberated economically could improve environmental conditions in and around abandoned and historical mines.CITATION:Fox, N, Parbhakar-Fox, A and Lottermoser, B G, 2016. In situations where foundation piles are located in proximity to existing or future tunnels, it is typical for the tunnel owner to require that sleeving of the piles be carried out to at least the invert of the tunnels to minimise any load transfer to the tunnel lining. In competent rock, this practice may be sometimes unnecessary, thus uneconomical. This paper presents an assessment of the effect of pile loading from one of the multi-storey buildings at Barangaroo South in Sydney on the adjacent future Sydney Metro tunnels. It was originally required by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) that the piles be sleeved below the tunnel invert level; however, the building developer wanted to reduce the pile sleeving depth to achieve a more economical solution due to the large number of load transfer piles being required for the project. To assess this feasibility, a full 3D commercial numerical code, FLAC3D, was used to carry out this complex soil-structure interaction analyses. Based on these assessments, it was demonstrated successfully to the TfNSW that the pile sleeving may be terminated at 2 m above the tunnel invert level. For this arrangement, the investigations found that the loading on the piles should have negligible adverse impact on the tunnel lining design. Societal expectations about how the industry operates and treats its people will be a key driver in the development of the Australian mining industry over the next 20 - 30 years (Moffat, Mason and Littleboy, 2009). Understanding these expectations will be critical in maintaining what much of the minerals industry calls its 'social licence to operate', or its public acceptance or approval. Yet what constitutes this social licence is poorly articulated, with little published research exploring the concept at a local operational level or at the national level in Australia or internationally. This research aimed to explore the societal expectations of the mining industry in Australia and test a participatory methodology to articulate them. Three workshops were conducted with a sample of 24 members of the 'Australian voting public' to explore community objectives for the onshore exploration and mining industry, and the underlying expectations for how the industry should operate in the future. Qualitative analysis of this data revealed three overarching objectives for the onshore mining industry held by participants. They thought that the industry should: advance Australia's national interests (including social well-being); minimise environmental impact, and; act in a socially responsible manner. Within each of these three key themes, or objectives, a number of tensions were evident in the views of participants regarding the trade-offs they are willing to make to secure economic benefit from mining, as well as the basic conditions for socially acceptable mining. These data provide an insight into the conditions for a national social licence in Australia for the mining industry, and the means for its realisation.

The iron and steel industry is experiencing an increase in the use of iron and steel commodities within societies, decarbonisation pressures, depletion of high iron ore grades and high energy consumption. This necessitates scrap metal recycling, low-grade ore utilisation using the induction or electric arc furnace to achieve the global target of net zero CO2 emission. The available highquality scrap metal cannot sustain the steel industry but the world has unused hematite-goethite ores. It is the aim of this research that this resource be utilised using the induction furnace to sustain the steel industry in an environmentally friendly manner. Indurated pellets prepared from the hematite-goethite ore, 5 wt per cent limestone and 5 wt per cent coal addition were smelted in the induction furnace at 1350 ± 50°C with 25 mins holding time. The effects of basicity and carbon content were also investigated to optimise the smelting parameters. The results showed that the careful control of the basicity, and iron-to-carbon ratio maximised total metal recovery. The optimal basicity ratio was determined to be 1.3 and a carbon to iron ratio of 1.4 achieved a total metal recovery of 73 per cent. The metal recovery was closely related to the estimated slag melting temperature. The basicity ratio of 1.3 achieved the lowest slag melting temperature estimated to be around 1380°C based on the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 phase diagram. The recovered metal had a comparable chemical composition and microstructure to that products from an ITmk3 furnace.

When used in suitable ground conditions, rock bolts can have advantages over other permanent tunnel lining solutions. Permanent rock bolts offer flexibility in tunnelling profile and rapid rock bolt installation can enable time and cost savings. There are also disadvantages when considering the suitability of rock bolts for permanent support installations. These generally concern achieving the specified durability requirement over the specified design life. By investigating alternate approaches to rock bolt installation, quality assurance (QA), monitoring and design life it may be possible to alleviate some of these concerns.The design and construction benefits that can be realised through the use of rock bolts are primarily related to reducing project program time. This time reduction could be realised if rock bolts are considered as a permanent solution, with the installation being completed as a part of the primary excavation cycle. Any reduction of the program could allow direct and indirect cost savings and in the case of a major project, allow the revenue stream to be realised earlier.Currently ambiguity exists where the treatment of rock bolts as permanent support components is inconsistent with that of (often identical) ground anchors, as utilised in stabilising cut and cover structures. The ground support design process, implementation and testing are generally similar, though the acceptance of rock bolts as long-term support elements is treated differently to ground anchors in technical specifications.This paper discusses some of the benefits available through the use of rock bolts. It offers different solutions to the concerns surrounding durability, including alternate approaches to installation, Quality Assurance practices and monitoring solutions. The selection of an alternate design life is also investigated as another means of alleviating concerns around long-term durability. The paper will also provide an indication of savings that could be expected through the use of rock bolts as part of a long-term support system.

Vibrating screens play an important role in the dry classification circuit of Gol-e-Gohar iron ore processing plant. This circuit was designed to classify the autogenous mill discharge and produce a suitable feed, with K80 about 450 ¦m, for dry magnetic separators. Three parallel vibrating screens produce more than 50 per cent of the separatorÆs feed. The efficiency of the magnetic separator is greatly affected by feed size distribution. In this work, the JKSimMet 5.1 software was used as an analysing tool to assess the flow rates and USIM PAC3 software as the simulation tool to control and optimise the vibrating screens. Samples were collected and the circuit was mass balanced. Then the vibrating screen was simulated and adjustment parameters such as cut-point, bypass and imperfection factor were determined. The product streams of vibrating screens can also be predicted.

The Yandicoogina Channel Iron Deposit (CID) is an accumulation of iron pisolites cemented by a goethite-rich matrix. The Yandicoogina CID’s are found in a palaeochannel that meanders within a broad structural basin of the Yandicoogina Syncline in Pilbara region of Western Australia. RTIO Yandicoogina Mine Geology team contributed to a number of strategies maximising the iron ore reserves mined by Rio Tinto. Two strategies are discussed: the replacement of the Batter-Berm final pit walls by contour dozing; and upgrading the lower grade material to crusher feed. 1. Contour dozing – traditional Batter-Berm pit final wall configuration left kilometre long wedges of ore sterilised around bench margins. Contour dozing final walls (ie dozing of ore down the ore-waste contact) as internally defined by RTIO Yandicoogina Mine Geology (Mine Geology), enabled recovery of additional crusher feed. 2. Upgrade of lower grade material – the lower ore domain (GVL) within the Yandicoogina orebody contains numerous clay pods. Contaminant Al2O3 inherent within clay pods can result in CID material outside of crusher feed grade specifications, causing it to be flagged as ‘internal waste’ in mining models and permanently lost to waste dumps. In 2011, after multiple tests, Mine Geology demonstrated that this material could be upgraded to crusher feed via wet processing. With the support of the RTIO Metallurgical Development team new grade specifications were defined. The resulting material has been used to supplement higher grade ore. While increasing the mining ore output, these ongoing value-adding strategies also promote more sustainable mining via better use of the non-renewable iron ore commodity. As mining companies have to go deeper in search of ore and coal, the importance of protecting the highwall increases. Wall fatigue also increases with importance of the long life expectancy of a highwall, in particular the impact of fatigue influenced by resonance. Resonance is the tendency of a material to oscillate with greater amplitude at certain frequencies when exposed to a periodic force. Until recently, only dominant frequencies, either natural or induced, were all that could be measured through the fast Fourier transform of the blast-induced wave form.This paper presents a novel method to accurately predict the resonant frequency of a highwall. In fact, the method can predict the natural frequencies between any two monitoring points placed in line with the source of impact, and as such it can be used to determine the resonant frequencies of any physical object. The method not only predicts the resonant frequencies of the material; it predicts the structural response of the total frequency spectrum. This method helps describe the response of a mechanical structure to excitation. It describes the structure’s efficiency in the use of energy, that is, whether energy is dampened or consumed in resonance.The initial predictions have been so accurate that it made it possible to determine the fundamental frequency and the first six harmonics of a highwall in a northern Queensland coalmine. With the use of electronic detonators, the blast can be timed with a repeating delay to create an induced artificial frequency that has been determined to retain the least amount of energy.CITATION:Osterman, R, 2015. Tunnels are being built around the world using TBMs and prefabricated segments or in situ concrete as linings. Clients demand high quality of these linings to guarantee a long-term stability and density of the tunnels. This paper describes the development and the use of segmental lining systems, including joints, important design criteria, installation procedures, possible mistakes and consequences, repair works and final results for different sites in Europe and around the world. The experience on these sites shows that damages may occur, if some essential aspects are not considered. These aspects include:parameters of the TBMs and back-up equipment such as fixation of jacking rams, movement of the back-up on the lining or ring reformer;parameters of the segments such as quality of moulds, quantity of reinforcement or structure of the joints; andparameters of the tunnel drive such as advance rate, ring-gap grouting or experience of the tunnel crew.All these aspects have to be considered very carefully in detail to get a good lining accepted in total.

This paper discusses the factors that contribute to the cost effective design of a concentrator. Concentrator design and layout outcomes are functions of the team (engineer’s and owner’s) participating in each particular project. The benchmark for relatively modest projects was set in the 1980s and 1990s during the ‘gold boom’ when numerous cost effective plants were designed and constructed on a lump sum basis in a very competitive market. A number of factors contribute to lack of transference of the lessons learnt in gold plant design to concentrator design including established paradigms in the design and layout of concentrators, lack of experience in cost effective design, operator’s preferences for flowsheet and layout and simple lack of appreciation of the impact of plant footprint on materials quantities and resultant capital costs.Experiences with recent copper concentrator projects (both small and large) are used as case studies.

Traditional methods of gold extraction have involved comminution and processing via cyanide leaching, all of which are associated with energy, cost and environmental implications. Subsequently, numerous opportunities for improvement and optimisation strategies in gold mining and processing have been explored, including heap leaching, which has significantly lowered comminution costs. This paper explores the effect of the more energy efficient high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) on the comminution behaviour (especially on the crack density) and cyanide leaching performance of laboratory reactors study on run-of-mine gold ore comprising the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) and the Elsburg Reefs (ER), sourced from Carletonville in the Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa. The ore was comminuted using HPGR at three different pressure settings (120, 90 and 60 bar). Large (-16/+11.2 mm) and small (-5.6/+4 mm) particles of the HPGR product where then mineralogically characterised using optical microscopy, quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) and X-ray computer tomography (CT) before cyanidation. The results of the leach experiments indicated a correlation between gold extraction, particle size and crack density. Mineralogical characterisation of the ore indicates that the Fe-sulfides present in the VCR are likely to be more reactive than those in the ER, thus having a more favourable influence on gold cyanidation. Australia has seen unprecedented demand for coal exports in the last ten years and this demand is set to expand further still according to many analysts. This rapid increase in demand has placed pressure on multi-user coal chains to guarantee the capability to meet the required demand, in terms of both current operations and capacity expansion.The projects required to deliver these forecast tonnages take place in an increasingly complex commercial and technical environment. These challenges include brownfield and greenfield projects, multiple rail and terminal service providers as well as a myriad of mine operators, all needing to operate in an increasingly integrated manner to get the most out of expensive shared assets.Increasing complexity and integration drives the need for more holistic and sophisticated analysis tools. The capacity of coal chain subsystems, such as mine, rail and port, can no longer be determined effectively in isolation. Understanding the nature of the interactions between these subsystems and the resultant capacity of the integrated system is the key to maximising value. TSG advocates the use of a total integrated system approach to understand the behaviour and performance of complex coal chains.Recently, TSG has worked in conjunction with the Integrated Logistics Company and a number of stakeholders in the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain to deliver the first independent system master plan. This master plan has provided a quantitative and rational assessment of coal chain capacity in its current state and a prediction of its capacity once a pipeline of committed capacity improvements is in place. It is underpinned by a highly detailed discrete-event simulation model of the complete coal chain as an integrated system, including mine load-outs, rail, terminal and port operations.This paper provides an overview of the study and describes the differences between subsystem and total integrated system model performance.

Six recent case studies were selected based on the eight main causes of mine disasters (Table 1; Quinlan, 2014) and where credible information sources, such as Royal Commission Reports, Coronial Investigations and textbooks, were available. Brumadinho and Samarco, Brazil – 2015 and 2019 Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) failures (Bowker, 2019; Darlington et al, 2019; Demajorovic, Lopes and Santiago, 2019; Morgenstern, 2016). 5. In 2000, after six year intensive exploration for high-grade haematite deposits, Rio Tinto included the channel iron deposits (CID) as a specific iron ore target in the Hamersley Province iron ore exploration program. The exploration model was simple and based on the then current understanding of CID genesis. Fundamental to the model was an interpretation that CID deposits after their final accumulation stage could be entirely concealed in their channels. Inversion to mesas and therefore exposure of the CID profile would only occur in areas where the modern drainages follow the ancient and have significantly incised their current bedrock. The model took encouragement from observations at Bungaroo Creek, where large CID accumulations occur in a deep valley incised in the Wittenoom Formation concealed below recent valley fills derived from the surrounding BIFs. Also, in the headwaters of the Yandicoogina system CID occurs below a more recent cover of calcrete and clay. After a number of failed or partially successful attempts, exploratory drilling in 2002 in the Caliwingina valley in the northern Hamersley Range identified significant CID mineralisation. Subsequent drilling programs from 2003 onwards revealed the presence of a large CID system, which stretches from the middle reaches of the Caliwingina Creek to deep under the sediments of the Fortescue Valley, a channel length of more than 30 km. Although the drilling is still somewhat sparse, the geological resource estimation suggests that Caliwingina is presently the third biggest CID system of the Pilbara (after Yandicoogina and Bungaroo Creek) and is of comparable size to the premining Robe River system (1.6 Bt), with comparable Fe-grades to the Yandicoogina global resource grade (57.7 per cent Fe). Large detrital and canga deposits overlie the Caliwingina CID, or interfinger with it, and although the economics of these are presently unfavorable, could ultimately present a low-grade iron resource of slightly smaller size to the CID mineralisation at Caliwingina Creek. Together with the recently discovered Serenity and Solomon deposits, as well as Cabbage Gum Bore and other smaller occurrences, the Caliwingina Creek deposit is part of a major new CID district in the central Hamersley Ranges, approximately halfway between Yandicoogina and Robe River. Although exploration in this new district is still underway, the preliminary indications are that this area will provide a total CID resource well over 3 Bt, and is on a par with the major known CID systems in the Hamersley Province.

"The current economic challenges faced by the mining industry led to a review of options for reducing the cost of ventilation control devices (VCDs). The VCDs at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland typically experienced significant damage on the operating levels and required expensive replacements. Ventilation controls can become damaged by the effects of stope firings. This paper discusses the nature of blast wave effects, giving consideration to distance from the firing and changes in mine geometry. The time taken to adjust the airflow on the operating levels with the current VCDs resulted in the loss of productivity opportunities. The mine site engaged an equipment supplier to collaborate on the development of a high-strength regulator to control the required airflows within its underground workings.The strengthened regulator proved to be cost-effective and provided additional benefits, including ease of use, simplicity of installation and speed of change in the control of available ventilating airflow. An added advantage of the re-engineered regulator compared to contemporary VCDs is its flexibility, which includes the ability to easily move mobile equipment into different ventilation districts where required without the need to remove the VCD from its location.
