As a result of the rapid economic growth in Japan, environmental problems have become a national concern in the latter half of the In 1967, the Basic Lair for Environmental Pollution Control was enacted as a fundamental ::olicy in this field. This lair provided compre- hensive guidelines for the action to be taken pollution prevention. The biggest problem n air pollution of those days was that of the sulphur dioxide content of the atmosphere. Based upon the law, the smelters in Japan have struggled hard to solve this difficult problem. Consequently, the ambient SO2 level has been lowered gradually year by year. At present, the ambient SO2 level is nearly equal to that in the atmospheric background. Furthermore, the fixation ratio of sulphur in Japanese copper smelters has attained up to 99.5 per cent.

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types. A method for the determination of the gas content of coal seams is presented which improves upon existing methods. The method makes use of a gravitational technique for measurement of the gas desorbed. The amount of lost gas is estimated by determining an empirical relationship relating the desorption of gas with time for each sample separately. This is to replace the assumption that desorp- tion follows a square root law with time. Laboratory investigations have been conducted which indicate that the square root desorption law does not hold good for carbon dioxide. Results of investigations on various factors influencing the technique are presented. It is shown that co-efficients of the empirical equation are dependent upon the elapsed time and the period of observation. Data about gas pressure measurements is presented and it is concluded that gas pressure can be approxi- mated to 0.6 times the pressure below a column of water equal to the depth of cover. In the smelting section, flexible fuels such as coal or coke are used in place of heavy fuel oil in order to utilize energy sources more efficiently. Heat recovered from the off gas of the furnace has been converted by the waste heat boiler into steam, which is used for self power generation and for heating or maintaining various temperatures. The amount of the recovered steam in the smelter is currently increasing due to maximum utilization of powdered cokes. The heat source required to maintain the temperature of the electrolyte in the tank house is electric power and steam. However until recent year this steam was provided by its own heavy oil combustion type boiler in the tank house since the amount of steam consumed in heating the electrolyte is large. Though experimental work over the last few years has shown the advantages of reducing steam in the tank house by fully covering the cell, the implementation of the full cover can lead to other operating problems. However various improvements, mainly the covering of the cell with a simple device, have led to greatly reduced steam consumption. As a result, steam for the tank house is now provided by the waste heat boiler only bringing more efficient energy usage.

Fine feed fractions in the size range from 1 to 40 ¦m of materials with different hardness as limestone and silicon carbide have been stressed in two different devices. A tungsten-carbide-blodc allows a single stressing with a pressure up to 2000 MPa and a 4-piston-block enables a multiple stressing procedure in which the material bed is stressed in alternating directions with a pressure up to 700 MPa. The experiments show energy absorption as the major factor for the interparticle breakage of hard material, like quartz, zircon silicate, silicon carbide and smelted oonindum, pressure, however, does not influence the results within the investigated range from 100 to 700 MPa and even up to 2000 MPa for corundum. But the breakage of the middle-hard limestone depends on the pressure so far as more fineness can be produced if the same energy is introduced at a lower pressure level. The creation of very fine and microfine fragments decreases strongly with increasing hardness of the feed materiaL The energy consumption for producing microfine material with a multiple stressing procedure on a particle bed is much lower than that one of a usual milling process. But this procedure needs a classification with a seperation cut at a couple of microns, which is not easy to accomplish.

The paper presents a new integrated system for control of concentration processes. The system is based on cluster-based modelling taking the ore quality into account and a new on-line particle size analyser capable also for reliable measuring of particle size distribution of concentrate. A metallurgical precontrol audit was performed at the Hitura concentrator in order to design the control strategy of the integrated grinding and flotation control. A new analyser PSI-200, was used to the measurement and control of the distribution of nickel in the total particle size range. An expert control system using the cluster model together with a new control strategy for decision of necessary control actions is outlined. The method has been tested to real data from mineral processes. The results are in good correspondence with empirical process knowledge. Mining is experiencing a difficult period of low profitability and declining productivity. To achieve sustainability, mining companies are challenged with improving output, quality and safety while decreasing costs. At the same time, organisations are having to manage a workforce in which individuals no longer accept a traditional style of management, employees prefer more flexible employment, and diversity within teams is becoming the expected norm.Increasing organisational diversity has been shown to have a positive impact on performance and therefore sustainability. Gender diversity and equality between working men and women is the area most studied in this regard. Executives are becoming more aware of the correlation between gender diversity and performance with some larger organisations having dedicated resources to increase the number and status of women in their organisations. Despite this, limited improvement in gender equality is apparent globally over the last decade with some industries, including mining, going backwards. So why is this the case and what other strategies are available?In 2015, the United Nations Women National Committee Australia (UN Women NCA) in conjunction with Autopia released a white paper discussing the lack of visible change in gender equality despite the widespread implementation of merit-based personnel management strategies. Using research from around the world and thoughts from influential government, education and business leaders, the paper ‘Rethinking Merit’ debunks the myth of the meritocracy. It provides a number of recommendations for organisations committed to improving their performance and sustainability through diversity, including a variety of real-life company examples, instead of relying solely on merit-based decision-making.This paper takes the recommendations of ‘Rethinking Merit’ and applies them to the mining industry. It shows the relevance that rethinking merit has for the industry and why applying the recommendations can result in an increase in diversity, therefore enabling greater performance and sustainability of mining companies. High purity alumina (HPA) is a processed, premium non-metallurgical alumina product characterised by its purity level ie 99.99 per cent (4N) or 99.999 per cent (5N). The market price, application, and performance of HPA varies widely according to its degree of purity. High purity alumina is a form of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) with growing use in LED lighting and coating on the ceramic cathode separator sheets in lithium ion batteries. This paper describes a study on producing high purity alumina from feldspar to produce HPA and potash for use as a fertiliser. The project was positive for a number of reasons. High potassium extraction (>99 per cent) was achieved in the alkali leach using sodium hydroxide as the leaching agent and full dissolution of the alkali leach residue was achieved using hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. The potential to produce a high purity alumina product via a complex but promising emerging process was assessed. The potential to extract potassium as potassium sulfate to add value to the project was also demonstrated with the test work.

A recoverable uranium resource, shown to be suitable for in situ leaching, was discovered at Honeymoon in South Australia in 1971. Exploration of the deposit was carried out during the period from 1973 to 1979. Uranium mineralisation occurs in a coarse-grained unconsolidated sand aquifer located in the Yarramba Palaeochannel at a depth of approximately 110 m. Following initial development during 1979 to 1983 and the construction of demonstration leach facilities, the Project was put on hold. Southern Cross Resources purchased the Project in 1997. Government approval was received in March 1998 for the operation of on-site demonstration leach and recovery facilities while an Environmental Impact Statement was prepared and a 1000 tpa commercial production plant was designed. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was released in June 2000 and operation of the test facility was completed in August 2000. Acceptance of the EIS by Commonwealth and South Australian state governments was announced on 20 November 2001. A Mining Lease was granted over the area of the proposed ISL operation on 8 February 2002. Operation of the Project is entirely dependent on using highly saline underground water resources to supply process and human needs. The management of discharge streams from the plant by re-injection was approved. The Honeymoon demonstration plant was the first adaptation of the solvent extraction process to highly saline in situ leach solutions. As such, it incorporated a number of unique operating and installation features. The trial period enabled optimisation of the process chemistry, additives and management and serves as an invaluable base for the proposed plant design and future operation. This paper discusses the nature of the uranium occurrence, the effect of saline water on the leach process and equipment, project design and environmental considerations, the requirements for disposal of discharge streams to minimise the impact on the arid environment and the requirements for rehabilitation following project completion.

A tunnel operations analyser is a new high technol- ogy instrument for use in underground work. By remotely sensing the acoustic emissions from operating machines and processes in a tunnel or shaft and by applying sophis- ticated computer processing to them individual process cycles and other detailed information about the operating processes can be collected. Detailed analyses and dissec- tions of the work in progress can be made and a variety of action oriented management reports produced. The pro- cess is fully automatic. Results of applying this device to two full scale tunnel projects are presented. The hardware and software that comprise the instrument are discussed in detail. Processes by which this device can be used to sub- stantially reduce tunnel costs are presented. It is concluded that this type of technology has great potential.

THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. This paper identifies the challenges and opportunities for mining companies and communities in investing in human rights compatible, credible, effective and representative company-community relationships.   The paper draws on the work of Professor John Ruggie, Special Representative to the United Nations Secretary General on Business and Human Rights, and his Protect, Respect and Remedy framework for business and human rights, The CDA Collaborative Learning Project, and the experience of Oxfam Australia. This paper begins with the premise that Australian companies commence operations offshore with high expectations and a willingness to work harmoniously with local communities. However, as companies increasingly engage in global operations - particularly in weak governance and conflict zones - the challenge to establish and sustain rights compatible, meaningful, corporate community relationships and grievances mechanisms becomes both more complex and necessary. Establishing trust and honouring commitments made to communities, including legacy issues, is a critical component in good corporate community relations.   The second part of the paper will identify some of the impacts and challenges of mining that need to be addressed in corporate community negotiations and consultation. Respect for indigenous people's rights and their right to give or withhold consent for a project to proceed is increasingly evident, as is the growing global expectations with regard to revenue transparency. As such, key challenges include: grievance mechanisms; free prior and informed consent; transparency and accountability; the gender impact of mining; resettlement, compensation and benefit sharing; and security issues.   Finally, the paper will provide practical guidance to companies on how to establish effective corporate community relationships. It will include examples, such as human rights impact assessments, gender impact assessments, and establishing local level grievance procedures. The paper will include an Oxfam Australia case study of a dialogue mechanism at Tintaya copper mine in Peru.

Multielement reconnaissance geochemistry coupled with ground scintillation gamma ray measurements has been used to investigate the dispersion patterns of uranium and other major and trace elements in the arid Palmyrides region of central Syria. This region occupies an interplatform depression in the northern part of the Arabia Plate, upon which sediments up to 10 km thick have accumulated. Outcrops of strongly fractured Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks form two major mountain belts, the northern and southern Palmyrides, between which is located the closed Ad-Daww basin, with a thick Neogene and Quaternary clastic cover. Among the various lithologies, phosphorites are well represented. Uranium and associated elements have been incorporated into the Upper Cretaceous and Lower Palaeogene sediments, especially the phosphorites, which are well represented in the region. These elements are derived from three possible sources, namely, sea water, Lower Cretaceous volcanism and metalliferous fluids leaking along taphrogenic lineaments. In and around the phosphorites, numerous traces of secondary uranium mineralization occur. Over 500 geochemical samples of outcropping rock, wadi and playa sediments, overburden and groundwaters were taken over an area of approximately 9000 sq km. Most samples were analyzed for 25 major and trace elements by nebulization ICPAES; for As, Sb, Bi and Se by hydride generation and ICPAES; and for U, Th and La and other REE by neutron activation analysis.

A trigger action response plan (TARP) provides a structured response to escalating levels of risk. In mining, TARPs are typically applied to primary hazards such as inrush, strata failure or heating. Necessary for the creation and deployment of a TARP is a monitoring system capable of detecting deviations from normal conditions. The advent of real-time instruments capable of measuring diesel particulate matter now permit decision-making within shifts to address possible overexposure. Deploying a TARP for diesel exhaust emissions can lower the probability of a person’s average exposure (over a full shift) exceeding the exposure standard by detecting deviations of diesel particulate concentrations from normal conditions. This enables pre-emptive action to mitigate or protect. The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of'search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. The first study showed particular benefits in the input stage and highlighted the fact that one could expect a lot of encouragement by way of interesting results but with little chance of finding the high-grade,

The Western Mining Corporation mining lease on the Bendigo Goldfield measures 5krri x 18km with more than 20 anticlinal folds parallelling th long north-south boundaries. Numerous closely spaced shafts and extensive underground workings on the reef lines along the folds flooded with groundwater following the progressive abandonment of the field. Preliminary water sampling and assessment demonstrated that a major dewatering programme and acceptable disposal methods were necessary to dewater interconnected old workings in areas of interest prior to any underground work taking place. A field wide geohydolic investigation was undertaken to establish geohydraulic parameters, groundwater recharge rates and water qualities. Data from the field investigation together with estimates of the volume geometry of the submerged workings as obtained from old mine plans, production history, and limited pump testing results were used with an appropriate analytical model to obtain estimates of water discharge rates required to reach various dewatering targets. Water disposal options were limited by relatively high salinities, arsenic levels, contained hydrogen sulphide, and the mine locations within the urban areas surrounding Bendigo. Direct disposal to the surface drainage system could not be considered, treatment to acceptable discharge standards was not economically feasible, and it was necessary to adopt a strategy of collection, containment, and evaporation.

High solids brown coal slurries have been prepared with concentrations approaching those achieved with bituminous black coals. The high inherent water content and macroporosity of Victorian brown coals have been reduced in a controlled manner by chemical and mechanical means. The hydrophobicity of the coal surface has been increased sufficiently to reduce the tendency for swelling and water uptake. This together with densification has allowed the solids content to be progressively improved from 25% solids with raw coal to 65% solids with modified coals. Both raw brown coal and modified brown coal suspensions show shear thinning behaviour resulting in lower viscosities at higher flow rates. All coal suspensions displayed a yield stress once sufficient solids concentration was achieved. This yield stress can be used in the prevention of solids settling. Under simple shear mixing the network structure that provides the yield stress quickly breaks down to a low viscosity fluid with reduced yield stress and a pumpable consistency. The time necessary for structural recovery is in the order of days permitting shut-down and start-up of fuel delivery systems.

The Operation of the LAROX PF-50 Pressure Filter at 'Ellatzite-Med' Flotation Plant, Bulgaria The implementation of Larox pressure belt filter, type Larox PF-50 provided within 6˜8% moisture content of the produced copper concentrate, which allowed good market realisation. The start-up of the pressure filter in 2009 reduced the electricity costs several times and had a positive impact on the technological regime of flotation. This article reveals the investigation results from the operation of the pressure filter according to different situations (density of the pulp, time for filtration, pressure of the material, pressure of the drying air, time for drying with air and other factors). The investment made in the pressure filter application is a guarantee for the successful operation of 'Ellatzite' flotation plant, Bulgaria in the coming years.

Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) has recently undertaken an exercise to improve orebody basal definition. Older mineralisation bases (pre-2005) were highly erratic using old protocol reverse circulation (RC) (also known as Air Core) drilling and interpretation. The erratic nature of this estimation tool, resulted in impractical modelling towards the end of mineralisation (EOM), difficult mine design and unrealistic reconciliation. New protocol drilling, which includes high definition SONIC drilling data, has provided more data to be available for more accurate interpretation. Recent advances in drilling methodology has allowed for better penetration depths for SONIC drilling, which was previously restricted to approximately 80 m (pre-2005). This improved data set allows more emphasis on geological interpretation with factors such as lithology, slime content, and mineral species distribution. These factors when in unique combination enable more accurate and realistic EOM data points. These points are modelled into surfaces using conditional simulation techniques and result in a vastly smoother surface and consequently, a more representative resource.
