North Eastern Russia encompasses the northern part of the Circum Pacific. The region comprises various tectonostratigraphic terranes, including cratonic blocks, fragments of volcanic arcs, accretionary wedge terranes, oceanic crust and passive continental margins. The terranes have been accreted to the eastern margin of the Siberian Craton in the Late Mesozoic. The prominent structures of the region are extended zones of the Mesozoic flysch and turbidites. Another important structure is the 3000 km long Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic arc which marks the Cretaceous active continental margin of northern Eurasia. The youngest structure of the region is the 2000 km long Late Cainozoic Kamchatka-Kuril island arc system. North Eastern Russia is the main gold producing region of the Russian Federation. Since the beginning of recorded gold production in 1932 until 1995 the region has produced 2575 t (83M oz) of gold. Most of it, 2439.5 t, has been produced from placers. Owing to depletion of alluvial gold resources, exploration and mining emphasis is currently switching to the development of the lode deposits. At least five distinct types of the gold mineralisation are reported in North Eastern Russia - mesothermal gold mineralisation in the Mesozoic fold belts, Paleozoic epithermal gold mineralisation occurring within Omolon block, epithermal gold mineralisation related to the Mesozoic volcanics, Cainozoic epithermal gold mineralisation, gold-bearing Cu-porphyry deposits. The current paper introduces the metallogeny of lode-gold deposits of North Eastern Russia. It provides the review of the regional geology, the selected gold provinces and representative deposits with an emphasis on the mineralisation styles and distribution control.

"An accurate prediction of benefit for some types of ore may require not just the ore grade, but a whole compositional characterisation of the estimates; that is, its full mineral composition including waste composition and nuisance elements. An example is Nickel laterite ores, where Ni/Co content must be complemented by estimates of many other elements, as these might have a notable impact on ore processing.Estimates are often obtained with (co-)kriging or co-simulation; however, geostatistics applied to compositional data may yield spurious and inconsistent results because of the constant sum constraint. The log-ratio approach avoids such problems. It proposes a three-step procedure: data are mapped to a set of log ratios of components; for example, the additive log-ratio transformation (alr) transformed scores are modelled with an appropriate fully multivariate geostatistical toolbox; for example, direct/cross-semivariograms and co-kriging or co-simulation results are back-transformed to the original units.Some practical aspects may make the application of this technique difficult: the assumption of Gaussianity and the high dimensionality of the compositions combined with the need for using multivariate methods. This contribution compares several ways of treating compositional data (combining normal score transformation, log-ratio transformations, and minimum/maximum autocorrelation factor (MAF) decomposition) with respect to their ability to generate sensible simulations. The various approaches considered are illustrated with a Nickel laterite data set for which ten variables are available. Both theoretical considerations and illustration results suggest that the best combination is (log)ratio-normal score transform-MAF, in this order. The factors so obtained are closer to Gaussian, approximately spatially decorrelated and can be simulated independently. Simulations can later be recombined to alr-simulations, which in turn may be converted back to point compositions. The resulting simulated compositions are compared with a full Gaussian co-simulation of the raw data. The log-ratio methods show reasonable to good reproduction of mean values, and distribution of the data set and by construction satisfy the total sum constraint, in contrast to the simulations based on raw data for which the total sums fluctuate strongly.CITATION:Mueller, U, Tolosana-Delgado, R and van den Boogaart, K G, 2014. Electrostatic separation of non-conductive materials can be accomplished by triboelectric charging. The efficiency of convential separators becomes worse in the size range below about 100 ¦m. These problems are solved by developing a new double-drum-separator. The investigations have shown the possibility of separating very fine mineral mixtures (eg quartz/calcite) in a strong electric field after tribo-charging in a special dust-feeder. The paper reports about the influence of particle size and field intensity on the separation and deals furthermore with the problem of desagglomeration.

Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20 million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1 mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.

Use of Impact Crushing for the Enrichment of Low-Grade Colemanite Concentrates This paper presents the results of an investigation into the enrichment of -25+3 mm low grade colemanite concentrates exploiting differential breakage properties of various minerals associated within the ore sample. Boric acid production process requires concentrates containing at least 42 per cent B2O3, hence concentrates below this grade either stock piled or further treated to increase B2O3 content. The low grade concentrate is obtained as a by-product of Emet Colemanite Concentrator and the B2O3 content may vary around 37 - 38 per cent. The sample used in the experimental studies assays 37.52 per cent B2O3. In the experimental procedures the sample was crushed using a laboratory size horizontal shaft impact crusher and the products were classified into different size fractions by screening so that any improvement by size could be observed. In the tests the effects of parameters such as the revolution speed of the crusher and heat treatment was checked. Test results prove that boron contents show a tendency to increase as the particle size decreases. As a result of the experimental studies a colemanite concentrate assaying 42.13 per cent B2O3 is produced with 76.55  per cent recovery. Arsenic content is seen to change inversely proportional with the B2O3 content of the concentrate such that it drops from 1016 ppm from the as received sample to 676 ppm in the concentrate.

The manufacture of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is not only energy-intensive but also releases a significant volume of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. In addition, OPC in concrete often causes premature deterioration that affects the durability of concrete structures. This paper explores an alternative to OPC concrete called geopolymer concrete.The present research utilises low calcium (class F) fly ash as the source material to produce geopolymer concrete. Several factors that affect the mix design process such as mix proportion, curing time, and curing temperature have been studied. In addition, the long-term properties such as drying shrinkage, creep, and exposure to sulfate attack are also being investigated.The test data presented in this paper reveal that geopolymer concrete possesses high compressive strength, undergoes very little drying shrinkage and moderately low creep, and shows excellent resistance to sulfate attack. The result is extremely promising and demonstrates the sustainability of geopolymer concrete as a construction material for a sustainable future.

During the period 1981 - 1991, Esso Australia and their Joint Venture partners have discovered about 180 MB of liquids (crude and condensate), 60 MB natural gas liquids and 800 - 1000 GCF of gas. A total of 48 wildcat wells were drilled including 12 new pool discoveries drilled from platform facilities. Significant discoveries include the West Tuna, Kipper, Blackback and Terakihi fields. These four discoveries, contribute to 75 per cent of the total reserves discovered in the last decade and were all high-risk plays. The Kipper discovery, in the pre-Latrobe Golden Beach Group top sealed by volcanics, and the Blackback-Terakihi discoveries, located on the present day continental slope in water depths ranging from 300-700 metres are both the result of successful drilling outside the traditional exploration bounds for the basin. During the last decade, Esso and its partners have spent about A$400M on wildcat exploration activity. The exploration success rate, excluding platform based drilling, has been 50 per cent for wildcat wells. On a technical front, the last decade has heralded substantial improvements in seismic data quality. Peak frequency content in seismic data at the Latrobe Group target levels is now double that of the early 1980s. Significant advances have also been made in our understanding of sequence stratigraphy, geochemistry and geohistory of the basin.

In the geologically prospective nations which rim the Pacific Ocean, mineral deposits offer great potential to create wealth for social and economic development. The paper first examines the geological and economic attributes of potential mineral wealth based on current outlook assessment of all significant base metal deposits discovered to 1988 in two Pacific Rim nations - Australia and Canada . The variability of mineral wealth among the economic deposits evaluated and the major contribution of the few world-class discoveries to total mineral wealth are highlighted. Then, the essential but too often neglected linkage between the makeup of potential wealth and its actual realization is analysed. The impact of taxation and the role of exploration are crucial in this regard. Finally, the ingredients of exploration success, prerequisites for realizing the mineral wealth of nations, are examined.

It is understood that rocks do not instantaneously transport along a grinding mill and are consequently not perfectly mixed, but this is conveniently overlooked in mill modelling. A lack of understanding of the transport phenomenon and the difficulty of modelling realistic transport in a complex tumbling system, contribute to this. Visual observation of segregation in AG and SAG mills and measured lag time of mill response to changes in feed provide evidence of the influence of axial transport within mills. Incorporating this lag in dynamic models should underpin dynamic simulation of milling circuits for design and for model-based control. Limitations and errors in predicting the influence of increased power via mill length versus diameter, inability to predict pebble production, and a lack of the differential in residence time across rock sizes and competences, all contribute to inadequate design prediction that can be especially acute for large Autogenous mills. Examples of dramatically under – and overloaded pebble regrind circuits and the inability to predict pebble load in AG milling discouraging the application of this energy-efficient option, point to the need for predictive modelling of breakage by competence linked to transport through and out of mills. Incorporating progress in granular flow and mixing, coupled to computational advances enable models to be based on complex breakage and transport models at high spatial resolution. This allows mechanistic models to simulate thousands of times faster than real time, opening the door to more accurate mill design, including dynamics in process simulation and to live simulation for process control – all with advanced mechanistic models. The value of grasping this opportunity is not easily refuted.

Pilot-Plant Testing of Ammoniacal-Cyanidation for Gold Recovery from Copper Gold-Bearing Ore The results of pilot-plant tested ammoniacal-cyanidation of gold recovery from copper gold-bearing ore are presented in this paper. This ore is from a deposit of Russian Federation with gold and copper grade 9.5 g/t and 0.4 per cent, respectively. Copper is largely present as malachite and azurite. The presence of chalcopyrite and bornite is also observed. In order to recover gold, gravity is recommended. Two options of ammoniacal-cyanidation using leaching of gravity tails, CIP and filtration, were tested. It was found that ammoniacal-cyanidation using filtration of leaching tailings and recycled solutions is the most optimal option. The proposed flow sheet provides for 89.7 per cent gold recovery from gravity tailings at the consumption of NaCN 0.9 kg/t and (NH4)2CO3 7.5 - 9 kg/t. Compared to conventional cyanidation, this technology decreases the consumption of sodium cyanide from 4 up to 0.9 kg/t at the same gold recovery. It can be recommended for the treatment of copper gold-bearing ores with the similar composition.

This study presents a comprehensive thermodynamic optimisation and sustainability analysis of the secondary copper smelting process for Waste Printed Circuit Board (WPCB) recycling. The study investigates various scenarios with different proportions of WPCB in the input stream, ranging from 0 per cent to 100 per cent. Through thermodynamic modelling using FactSage™ version 8.1, the optimisation process is conducted in three stages. The results of the thermodynamic modelling indicate that the best-case scenario for WPCB recycling is achieved with a 40 per cent proportion of WPCB in the input stream. This case exhibits a maximum copper recovery of 99.93 per cent while minimising the formation of other waste. In addition to the thermodynamic analyses, environmental factors such as the carbon emission index and resource utilisation efficiency are studied. The 40 per cent WPCB recycling case exhibits a resource utilisation efficiency of 93.055 per cent and a carbon emission rate of 0.133. The present investigation highlights the significant benefits of a 40 per cent WPCB recycling scenario through a secondary copper smelting process in terms of base metal recovery and energy efficiency, thus emphasising its potential for sustainable PCB waste management and resource utilisation.

The major technological advances of the last 30 years have profoundly reshaped mining practices. Machines keep getting bigger while productivity continues to increase and manning levels drop. These trends will continue and the introduction of breakthrough technologies will continue to accelerate, driven by a continued focus on lowering the cost of production, improving the productivity of workers and machines, and ensuring safer working environments. At the same time, global consolidation of mining companies has impacted on technology development in a range of ways. There are many potential technologies being proposed, some already operating in Australian mines. The automation of underground load-haul-dump (LHD) trucks for example, continues the process of removing workers from the most dangerous operating environments. Global positioning systems fitted to draglines, fibre optic communication channels, and 400 tonne trucks are only some examples of what lies ahead. However, where we need to return focus is to the technology of management û which is also one of the two key interrelated themes of this keynote address. Have we, as an industry, adequately been able to keep up with technological advances? Are our management systems as competent as the machinery we employ? The other key theme is the processes of globalisation and consolidation. What are the impacts on our industry? What are the implications of these processes, particularly for the ways in which we manage our people? My paper is divided into several components:some comments on the coal industry and the dramatic restructuring we have seen in recent years; in the context of this restructuring, an overview of my company and its evolution; my views on the role of contractors; some comments on the consolidation also occurring in the mining machinery and equipment, technology and services sectors; some observations on two major areas of technology û drill and blast; and trucks, shovels and excavators; the implications of consolidation and new technology for our employees and management; and finally some comments on research programs.

Antimony (Sb) is an element similar to arsenic that forms anions in surface waters, rather than cations like other metals. Little is known about natural mobility of antimony in the environment. However, recent studies have suggested that antimony has similar toxicity to arsenic. Current New Zealand drinking water guideline values are 3 parts per billion (0.003 mg/l) for antimony and 10 ppb (0.01 mg/l) for arsenic. Antimony occurs principally in stibnite (Sb2S3) in mesothermal vein deposits hosted in low grade metamorphic belts of eastern Australia and southern New Zealand. Many deposits have been mined historically, including one large deposit, at Hillgrove, NSW. Oxidation of stibnite and associated arsenopyrite and pyrite causes local acidification of natural waters but acid is readily neutralised by carbonates in mineralised zones and host rocks, and therefore waters are near-neutral (pH 6-8.5). Antimony dissolves readily in moderately oxidized, near-neutral waters. Experimental stibnite oxidation yielded up to 37 mg/kg (37 000 ppb) dissolved antimony, and mine and tailings dam waters at Hillgrove mine have up to 55 mg/kg (55 000 ppb) dissolved antimony. Natural stibnite can contain >5000 mg/kg arsenic in solid solution and therefore dissolution of stibnite, arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite also releases arsenic into waters. Resultant dissolved arsenic concentrations are up to 3.6 mg/l (experimental) and up to 7.2 mg/l (mine and tailings dam seepages). Mine and tailings discharge waters have elevated antimony and arsenic where they emerge, but attenuation occurs by deposition of the metals on to amorphous iron oxyhydroxides which can contain >10% each of antimony and arsenic. Historic disposal of mineralised waste rock and tailings into the stream system at Hillgrove has caused contamination of sediments and waters with antimony and arsenic for at least 20 km downstream with effects traceable in sediments for 300 km. Other stibnite-bearing deposits are likely to have analogous environmental effects, particularly from historically-mined sites.

The mining industry continues to faces significant challenges due to increasing resource constraints (quality of ore bodies, water, energy, human resources) and increasing license to operate requirements (safety, health, environment, location) from society, employees and shareholders. Technology advancements and hence research are necessary to ensure that the industry remains viable in this changing environment. Collaborative research is an important part of a company's research portfolio and offers the opportunity for the industry to work on generic issues that it is facing. Obvious benefits include the reduced cost to individual companies by sharing the costs, the opportunity to leverage government funding and the opportunity to conduct longer term projects resulting in skills development (PhD and MSc). Limitations of collaborative research include the reduced focus on company specific issues and the loss of competitive advantage from owning the outcomes of the research. The challenge for researchers and research managers is for them to demonstrate the value derived from longer term, pre-competitive collaborative research. The competitive advantage is not necessarily derived only from the outcomes of the research but rather from the company's ability to direct the research, translate the generic research outcomes to address company specific issues and to implement improvements at its operations. Implementation remains the greatest challenge. In this paper, case studies of selected collaborative research projects are presented to demonstrate key success factors required for implementation of research outcomes. The Morning Star Gold Mine presents an example of a prolific operation with considerable historical records, mine workings, drill hole logs and countless plans from greater than 20 adjacent mines which have now been consolidated to form the current project. Implementation of 3D computer modelling in the planning stages has provided an additional tool to integrate and refine geological models as a guide to some exploration strategies. It has allowed for a re- interpretation of the host rock units, dimensional constraints, new exploration extensions and provisional resource modelling. The initial consideration of this project was to integrate 135 years of mining history into a single database. Each historic mining area had an unrelated mine grid, often established parallel to the long axis of their main stopes; some were based on magnetic or true north. Survey plans were in chain, imperial or metric units. Through the manipulation and rotation of old grids, previously unrelated mine workings began to form continuous mineralised zones, with unmined portions still remaining in between the existing development. Furthermore the current drillhole database of >433 holes showed numerous confirmatory intersections of new mineralisation. A series of tiered tables were created within a relational database to derive guidelines for assessing data to attribute a Mineral Prospectivity Value [MPV] based on key indicators of mineralisation. Indicator logging now forms the basis of geological descriptions.

A series of in situ pull tests has been conducted to determine the holding capacity of the standard SS46 Split Set Stabilisers. The experiments have been conducted in a wide range of geological conditions ranging from bedded rock to blocky ground. The results presented in this paper indicate that cement grouted split sets bolts are likely to provide up to three times the initial bond strength per metre of embedment length provided by the ungrouted bolts. The increased load transfer capacity of the grouted bolts provides an alternative for permanent excavation support using split set stabilisers.

Management of information systems for data collection is essential to maintain data integrity and continuity, and manage loss control on a large world-class mine such as Telfer Gold Mine. This paper aims to describe the individual systems and protocols of geological data capture at Telfer, then focus on Quality Assurance Quality Control data as an example of loss control in practice. Loss control systems are required to provide capacity, flexibility, structure and management tools to enhance data interrogation. The data that have been collected can then provide geological, financial, environmental, and contractual information to optimise management of business best practice. Telfer Gold Mine is a wholly owned and operated subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. The mine is located in a remote area of NW Western Australia, and has been operating for 20 years. Geological data have been collected at Telfer since 1973. The data include drilling, assay, geological, survey, structural and geophysical data. Data management has evolved through many systems with data stored on many different hardware and software platforms. Commencing in 1995, collation, standardisation and validation of the historic data was completed. This has resulted in the first Access based drill hole database incorporating all available drilling data. This drill hole database, now hosted in SQL Server, is the hub for all geology related data management systems. The Telfer Gold Mine Geology Department has developed a series of inter-related database systems in order to manage the core geology business issues. Databases relating to drill hole planning, drill contract management, geological logging, accounting (standard costing, forecasting, invoice reconciliation), quality control (QAQC), and environment rehabilitation have all been developed to manage loss control. Management effort to provide adequate data systems and protocols has driven the system from concept to utilisation. The improved productivity, data integrity and data analysis capabilities provided by the new database systems at Telfer have allowed for greater confidence in decision making. Systems such as the drill hole and QAQC databases, when utilised in the proper manner provide up-to-date data analysis for resource audits and contract negotiations. The loss control systems are essential to maintain confidence in data integrity and hence directly effect the future of mining at Telfer.

The paper examines three types of polar zoning of ore-forming and associated elements that can be detected from geochemical data. Polar zoning is mapped in the form of geochemical ore systems of various ranks. Various types of polar zoning can be found in some systems, which present a general geochemical model of the ore object. The genetic basis of zoning is examined from the perspective of the conception of geoelectrochemical redistribution of matter, including ore-forming elements. The volume of the geochemical ore system may be used in the prognosis of resources for every rank.

Efficient blasting requires constant vigilance with respect to the actual layout being used in the field. Objective measurement techniques are required in laying out a pattern as the 'by eye' or 'thumb suck' methods cannot guarantee consistent results in layout. Erratic blast results are the consequence of such an approach. In a case study at Sons of Gwalia mine, it was demonstrated that incorrect front burdens had a snowballing effect on otherwise carefully laid out blasts, resulting in both excessive amounts of boulders caused by preconditioning of bench fronts and tops, and tight digging. Both problems caused lower excavator productivity and excessive excavator damage, as well as making it difficult to set out subsequent blasts correctly. Several field measurement methods are available to aid in determining correct blast layouts and one is described in this paper.

Major diamond pipes discovered in Western Australia in the late-1970s exhibited a number of unique features that not only resulted in Australia becoming the largest diamond producer in the world in volume terms by 1986 but also changed geological thinking on the primary occurrence of diamond. They were: - lamproite is an alternative primary diamond host to kimberlite. - the extremely high mean grade of the Argyle lamproite pipe at 5 ct per tonne. - the tectonic setting of the lamproite pipes in mobile zones mar- ginal to the Kimberley Craton in contrast to the traditional African setting within stable cratons. Diamond was one of the earliest economic minerals discovered in Australia but 128 years elapsed between its first recognition and the first Australian economic pipe discovery (Argyle). During that period some 200,000 ct of alluvial diamonds were mined in Australia (mostly in New South Wales), but such alluvial output is insignificant on the world scene where annual production today runs at 95 million ct of natural stones some 76010 of which comes from primary pipe sources such as Argyle which alone produces 30 million ct per annum. Of particular significance therefore is the geological nature of the primary diamond source rocks in Australia. The Argyle and Ellendale Pipes are lamproites, differing from kimberlite in their mineralogy and geochemistry, and characterised by the presence of typical lamproite minerals such as leucite, priderite, potassic richterite, and the abnormally high content of chemical elements incompatible with ultramafic rocks.
