This paper examines the practical limitations that affect the measurement of stress in rock. As most rock stress measurement is conducted through the invasive process of drilling a hole in a rock mass, the nature of the rock and its response to being drilled form the basis of the stress measurement process. The prime techniques to measure stress down a borehole are to conduct hydraulic fracturing and its variant hydrojacking, overcoring, and the examination of the borehole wall for breakout or tensile fracture. It is also possible in some circumstances to use the sonic velocity within the rock mass as an indicator of the stress situation. Other structural indicators of stress such as joints, faulting and intrusions are useful but may not reflect the current stress situation within the rock mass. The variability of stress within the rock mass also needs to be considered as it is quite unusual to have a monotonic stress situation throughout any rock mass. The outdated concept of measuring the far field stress in a few measurement for use in a numerical model is quite dangerous. It is essential to make multiple measurements and to generate an understanding of its distribution in some form of model before stress can sensibly be incorporated into underground design. New 40Ar/39Ar dates of vein and wall rock adularia from seven epithermal deposits and one porphyry copper prospect help constrain the ages of mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield. Vein adularia from the Paritu region yielded a single 40Ar/39Ar plateau date of 16.315 ¦ 0.066 Ma. Five 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Opitonui deposit overlap within error to yield a preferred age of 13.149 ¦ 0.016 Ma. Two samples of vein adularia from the Night Reef at the Broken Hills deposit yield exceptionally flat 40Ar/39Ar plateaus, and all dates overlap within error to provide an age of 7.121 ¦ 0.010 Ma. Two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of one sample of vein adularia from the Wharekirauponga deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.318 ¦ 0.061 Ma. Four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Maratoto deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.411 ¦ 0.022 Ma. Two samples of adularia from altered wall rock at the Sovereign deposit yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.547 ¦ 0.021 to 6.806 ¦ 0.028 Ma. This suggests that mineralisation formed around 6.6 Ma, but the results are complicated because the adularia contains minor illite that post-dates adularia formation. Results from the Karangahake deposit are complex. Two samples of vein adularia yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.116 ¦ 0.116 to 6.901 ¦ 0.101 Ma, whereas one sample of wall rock adularia that contains minor late illite yields two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide a date of 5.734 ¦ 0.041. The range of dates indicates that more work is necessary to understand the history of mineralisation at this deposit. Two samples of vein adularia from the Tui deposit yield four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide an age of 5.714 ¦ 0.017 Ma. These results confirm previous work that indicates that the ages of epithermal deposits young southward in the Hauraki Goldfield. These results are also consistent with previously postulated different ages for deposits hosted in Kuaotunu Subgroup rocks in the northern goldfield (>10 Ma), and deposits hosted in Waiwawa Subgroup rocks in the southern goldfield (7.1 to 5.7 Ma).

Mining ventures are essentially risky businesses. Explorers and project developers (plus their investors and financiers) attempt to minimise the risks involved or at least manage them. Core considerations are the obvious technical and commercial risks, but the socio-political system and regulatory environment in which the project will operate can be more important. Successful mineral investments in a country depend upon obtaining realistic and reliable technical results in a country that provides certainty, to gain and maintain investor confidence in a project. Brief commentary is provided on the usefulness of professional accreditation and ethics plus other specific reporting codes (eg JORC/VALMIN Codes) in reducing risks by reinforcing high technical competence and reputable individual professional behaviour (particularly in the context of currently perceived high corruption levels in so many countries). These various risk components are reviewed, especially in a global context, to showcase New ZealandÆs current position. Successful projects are those which provide investors with credible and reliable optimal results in less volatile environments because investors/lenders hate uncertainty and surprises even more.

Geological exploration and mining development increased their intensity and rate of success during the last five years in Peru. Particularly relevant are the mining projects of Yanacocha and Pierina for epithermal Au and Ag. Also relevant are the new mining operations at Iscaycruz and Uchucchacua for limestone replacement Zn- or Ag-rich base metal skarn deposits. Miocene continental volcanics host the low-grade but near-surface orebodies of the Yanacocha mining district in Cajamarca. Several deposits have been mined since 1994 with open-pit and heap-leach gold production increasing from 300 000 ounces to 1 300 000 ounces in 1998. In a similar geological setting, but with three times the grade of Yanacocha, the Pierina valley-leach operation in Ancash is set to produce 800 000 ounces Au during 1999. At Iscaycruz in Lima, Cretaceous limestones host massive pyrite and sphalerite skarn deposits with 10 to 20 per cent Zn. Mining and milling were started in 1996 with last yearÆs production rising to 180 000 tonnes of Zn concentrates. At Uchucchacua, selective underground mining of fracture-controlled Ag skarns, with 400 to 420 g/t, has been recently increased from 1200 to 2000 tonnes per day to produce 5.5 million ounces Ag during 1998. Advanced exploration projects are located in the framework of nine Phanerozoic metallogenic provinces. Mineral deposits of preferred attention are precious metal disseminations and veins, base metal replacements and skarns, porphyry Cu (Mo-Au), Mississippi-Valley-type Zn and base metal volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits. Geological discovery of new orebodies enables a sustainable development of the mining industry in the country.

Core samples, which were collected by the author from the Busang prospect, East Kalimantan, reflect a progressive evolution of a large magmatic-related hydrothermal system that is comparable to that encountered in many similar systems elsewhere in the Pacific region. The initial, localized deposition of sheeted porphyry quartz-molybdenite veins took place at high temperatures and fluid salinities, and at relatively deep levels. This was followed by an extensive phase of phyllic (sericite-quartz-pyrite ¦ tourmaline-apatite) wallrock replacement and vein formation. Propylitic (epidote-chlorite-carbonate-quartz) alteration was formed marginal to the phyllic assemblages. These porphyry-related events were centred in the Southeast Zone, and are probably associated with the emplacement of a felsic intrusion at depth. This event contributed only trace gold to the system. The early stages of hydrothermal activity were followed by an episode of quartz (¦ adularia) û carbonate û base metal sulfide veining, which was accompanied by argillic (illitic-kaolin clay) wallrock alteration. This event was sulfide-rich in the Central Zone and carbonate-dominated in the Southeast Zone. Gold mineralisation was observed in Central Zone drillcore to be associated with both sulfide, as well as carbonate, deposition. A final stage of epithermal-style quartz ¦ stibnite û realgar veins are, in the Central Zone, locally gold-bearing. The latter two events are interpreted to be associated with the late-stage exsolution of metal-bearing brines from the felsic intrusion that formed the earlier porphyry quartz-molybdenite veins and widespread phyllic-propylitic alteration.

Classification within the Inferred Resource category is based on geological judgement and the balance of extrapolation versus interpolation that the Competent Person is prepared to accept. These resources are typically drilled at spacings well in excess of the geostatistical range and at a density that is non-uniform. In many cases, a substantial proportion of the available data will be historical, and should be considered with more recent data sources. The provision of a robust geological model will increase the confidence in any resource estimate, and should be viewed as a critical component. The definition of Inferred Resources is of great importance to vein gold projects, since Indicated and Measured Resources generally require costly underground development for delineation. Indeed, many gold vein operations possess substantial quantities of Inferred Resources (>75 per cent) in their resource inventory both at project start-up and during production. This contribution explores a number of the key issues when using the Inferred Resource category and presents four recent case studies.

There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

Increasing orebody complexity, restrictions in ground access, and longer lead times for disturbance approvals, have generated the need for the Resource Development Team within Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO), to explore optimised drill design techniques that deliver resource conversion value while maximising program outcomes. In response to this challenge, the Team initiated a case study to produce an AI assisted/designed drill program using a non-machine learning AI. The case study involved the assessment and implementation of an AI generated drill program at one of RTIO’s Pilbara iron ore deposits, located in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia. The Mineral Resource is currently classified as 100 per cent Inferred. Access constraints inherent to topography, and the presence of exclusions zones have prevented adequate drilling coverage, resulting in lower resource confidence and a poor definition of the orebody extents and geometry. The drill campaign, planned in Q1 2023, needs to consider access constraints, complex topology and the limitations related to additional ground clearance, while addressing the requirement of improving orebody knowledge. The drill plan had to address two objectives. The first and main aim of drilling was to upgrade the Resource Classification to allow for possible conversion to Ore Reserve. The input for this objective was a volumetric representation of the areas currently not meeting pre-defined quantitative Resource Classification upgrade criteria. The second objective was to better define the orebody extents and geometry. For the second objective, the input to the drilling optimiser was a volumetric representation (blocks) of the areas of high uncertainty in the mineralisation/waste boundary, which were defined using an indicator conditional simulation technique. The drilling optimiser output was a range of compliant drill plans. A set of KPIs based on economic and orebody knowledge criteria were used to assess the plans and to select the most optimal drill design to be drilled in 2023. The geology and management teams were able to make better informed, objective decisions using the trade-off between cost and orebody knowledge gained. As part of the assessment, the AI generated plans were compared to our current planning practises. The AI assisted plans, when gauged against the project KPIs, showed clear and measurable improvements in both meeting project objectives and in managing operational risk.

The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Open cut coal-mining has been conducted in the Bowen Basin region of central Queensland for almost five decades, and has disturbed an estimated area of 140 000 ha of agricultural land until 2011. Approximately one-third of the area disturbed by mining has been rehabilitated to pastures or bushland. However, none of the rehabilitated land has yet been assigned a specific end-use. This research project develops an approach for assessing end-use risks for the regionÆs mined land, and develops risk assessment models for selected end-uses. First, a web-based survey of stakeholders was used to identify risks to be assessed. The risks identified were surface erosion, subsurface erosion, bushfires, weeds and feral animals. The survey also identified possible end-uses of bushland and grazing. Second, conceptual risk models were developed based on the risk assessment concepts of likelihood and consequence specified in the Australian and New Zealand risk assessment standards. Likelihood was modelled using site characteristics and management factors that influence the occurrence probability of risks (eg surface erosion), while consequence was modelled using a set of site condition indicators and condition thresholds (changes in root-zone water-holding capacity, soil erodibility, vegetation ground cover and soil organic matter and transition probability to a non-preferred ecosystem type).The factors influencing likelihood and consequence for each risk have been integrated using Bayesian networks. The next step in model development is to parameterise the Bayesian networks using existing equations, empirical datasets, or expert opinion where data are not available. The parameterised models will be used to assess grazing and bushland end-uses against erosion, bushfire, weed and feral animal risks for rehabilitated mined land sites, with the purpose of identifying the relative risks associated with each end-use, and the landform design specifications and land management practices under which end-use risks are minimised.CITATION:Maczkowiack, R I, Smith, C and Erskine, P D, 2012. Industrial minerals and rocks are those which are economically important because of desirable physical and/or chemical properties rather than metal or energy content. The evaluation of these resources for investment purposes in general follows established procedures after due consideration of well documented input data. However, in view of the sensitivity of many industrial mineral projects to specific inputs they require very careful analysis. The characteristics of the industrial minerals and the industrial minerals industry are reviewed and the significance of logistics, customer requirements, technology and marketing are discussed. Implications in relation to resources/reserves terminology are considered with phosphate rock used as an example. It is concluded that industrial mineral projects as a consequence of technology and market dependence in particular can give a high level of investment risk. The industry, however, offers most interesting and challenging employment opportunities for geologists, mineral engineers and economists.

In the estimation of reserves the known values of the variables of interest from surrounding drill holes are used to compute or estimate the unknown value of the orebody over a given region or at a given point of interest. The classical means of doing this are: 1. The Polygonal Method û where the region is divided into polygons centred on bore holes, each variable is then assumed to have constant value over each polygon. 2. Inverse distance methods, where the variable is assumed to vary linearly with the distance between the known values of the drill holes. 3. Inverse distance squared method û a quadratic variation is assumed for the variables between the bore holes.

In 2011 the forecasted world demand for iron ore continues to grow, and during this time Australia is looked upon as a reliable supplier of high quality ore. The expansion of the current Australian mines is unlikely to meet the forecast demand. New mines are therefore being actively explored for and when discovered, are quickly being developed into mines in order to meet the world’s hunger for steel.The Solomon Project area is a large new iron ore discovery, located in the central Hamersley Ranges of the Pilbara province in Western Australia. The first Fortescue exploration drill holes commenced on the project in 2007 and to date three billion tonnes (Bt) of iron ore have been defi ned within the project area. Fortescue is fast-tracking the development of the ‘Solomon Stage 1’ project, with rail and mine construction commencing during 2011, and ore to be railed to Fortescue’s existing shipping operations at Port Hedland commencing in 2012. At a designed production rate of 60 Mt/a, the Solomon operation will be one of the biggest production centres of iron ore in the Pilbara.Deposit types include the three dominant mineralisation styles of the Pilbara province, being bedded iron deposits (BID), Channel iron deposits (CID) and detrital iron deposits (DID). All these mineralisation styles are present in large concentrations within the Solomon project area, and when mined will produce two product streams. These are a single product of CID, and a combined product from a blend of BID and DID material.This paper defines the geological characteristics of the Solomon iron deposits as recognised through the exploration and development of this vast resource over the three years since exploration commenced on the project.

Wollongong* is Australia's largest single centre of mining and metallurgy. Wollongong's total employment in manufacturing of basic metal products (over 26,500 in 1972/1973) was almost 50 per cent higher than that of Newcastle and double that of any other Australian city. Although the great bulk of this employment was in steelmaking, Wollongong's copper industry was also a significant employer. Wollongong's total employment in mining (4,900 in 1971) was second only to that of Newcastle among Australian mining centres. Although the bulk of Wollongong's mining is of coal, there is also considerable mining of blue metal, sand and clay. While in some cases it is vitally important to measure the virgin stress in rock prior to tunnelling there are a number of cases where such stress measurement is really not required. The concept of having to have a number to put in a numerical model representing a continuum is often quite inappropriate. This paper discusses the cases when virgin stress measurement is required and the most appropriate means to measure it. The techniques discussed cover all of the overcoring systems, hydrofracture and borehole breakout measurements. It also covers the use of rock surface stress measurement, which is easy to perform and should be used to check for changing stress conditions. Unfortunately this technique has been ignored in recent times because engineers are addicted to numerical models requiring far field stresses rather than measuring the real values that exist where they matter – at the tunnel wall. A case is presented in which the measurement of surface stress in a tunnel boring machine tunnel enabled the far field stress to be determined in what must be the world’s largest overcore.CITATION:Gray, I, 2014.
