Traditionally, characterisation of the mineralogy and textures of ore and rock samples were based on observations of hand specimens and thin sections using an optical microscope. The extent of the data collection was limited by the available tools and thus variations in mineralogy and texture were generally not described by quantitative data. These qualitative to semi-quantitative approaches, even though well established over the years, resulted in variable observations and data sets. The data were unlikely to be representative of a sample and limited statistical validity meant the results could not be reliably used in modern digital mining design and planning. With recently developed SEM based quantitative mineralogy tools and the corresponding methodologies, ore textures can be quantified and compared numerically. The numerical data can not only enhance the understanding of an orebody in geological terms, but can also be used in the creation of metallurgical models for mine and mineral processing design and simulation. These capabilities provide valuable inputs to risk assessment studies and the evaluation of mineral projects.

Magnetic separation is routinely used in the processing of titaniumminerals, and the efficiency of these operations can be determined bymeasuring the magnetic properties of the process streams. The valuable components in the feed to a titanium minerals plant have specific magnetic susceptibilities ranging from -10-9 m3 kg-1 (zircon) to 10-6 m3 kg-1 (ilmenite). However, in an industrial environment, in which the mineral temperature may range from 20 to 120¦C, it is difficult to measure susceptibilities lower than about 10-7 m3 kg-1. Hence laboratory testing of spot samples from magnetic separators is currently required to obtain accurate performance data. This is an inherently slow process and where feed grades are variable, optimum performance of magnetic separators is generally not achieved.This paper describes the development of an inductance-basedinstrument for measuring very low levels of magnetic susceptibilityon-line. The signal from the instrument can be used for process control purposes to maintain optimum magnetic separator performance.A prototype instrument has been installed in the zircon scavengercircuit in an Australian titanium minerals plant. The circuit consists of a roll magnetic separator treating a feed consisting mainly of monazite and stained zircon. The monazite-rich magnetic fraction is returned to the mine site for disposal, while the non-magnetic fraction is recycled to the zircon wet circuit. Splitter positions in the separator are adjusted when the final zircon product fails to meet specification, or the magnetic fraction contains more than 30 per cent zircon. Weekly composite grain counts show that sub-optimal operation of the magnetic separator results in significant zircon losses into the magnetics fraction.Using the instrument, the zircon content of this stream can now beaccurately determined from the measured magnetic susceptibility,provided a correction for the effect of mineral temperature is applied using the Curie - Weiss relationship.

Ok Tedi Mining Limited has recently completed the first phase of a trial to compare the performance of D26B Krebs cyclones in different configurations to the new Warman 650 mm CAVEX cyclones. From 1992, rougher flotation feed size has increased from the target d80 grind size of 150 ¦m with increasing SAG mill throughput. At high SAG mill throughput, operators have difficulty maintaining the target cyclone feed pressure and must increase the cyclone feed density, thus resulting in a coarsening of the cyclone split. Warman International have developed the CAVEX high capacity cyclone. The new CAVEX cyclones, when compared to the Krebs units appear to:produce a measurable increase in volumetric flow for the same pressure drop; maintain or decrease the proportion of coarse particles reporting to overflow; and lower the overflow density. In all plant trials to-date, the CAVEX cyclones appear to be superior to the standard Ok Tedi Krebs cyclones. Further testwork is planned to evaluate modified Krebs cyclones (with recent design improvements) against the CAVEX cyclones.

Banded Iron Formations or more commonly known as BIF are sedimentary rock formations with alternating silica-rich layers and iron-rich layers that are typically composed of iron oxides (hematite and magnetite), iron-rich carbonates, and/or iron-rich silicates. Considering the depletion of highgrade iron ore reserves in South Africa, there is a need to maximise resource utilisation through the exploitation of sterile resources in particular BIF material which makes up greater than 65 per cent of current reserves. BIF, like most resources, is non-renewable and the deposition of BIF is thought to have come about by the reaction of Fe2+ ions in the ocean water with dissolved oxygen billions of years ago. BIF ore derived from the Limpopo region in South Africa (SA) located in the Penge Iron Formation is according to Cairncross, Kramers and Villa (2018) equivalent to that contained within the Asbestos Hills Iron Formation of the Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape, SA. Considering that these are one of the largest iron ore deposits in SA, the case study involved mineralogical characterisation followed by beneficiation of BIF from these two regions to ascertain the comparability. Coarse and fines gravity separation comprising of Heavy Liquid Separation/Dense Media Separation on the +1.18 mm size fraction and shaking table on the -1.18 mm size fraction was conducted to ascertain whether an on-grade product or blended feedstock could be produced. The Limpopo mixed and Northern Cape conglomerate BIF samples achieved similar overall responses due to the conglomerate sample containing 15.3 per cent additional -1.18 mm fines. A combined coarse and fines product grading at 60 per cent Fe could be achieved at a yield and recovery of 43.9– 53.0 per cent and 62.2–63.8 per cent respectively. Increasing the grade to 63 per cent Fe reduces the overall recovery by 13.3 per cent. At the higher target grade, the contaminant specifications could be achieved for both samples. The Northern Cape laminated BIF sample is the most promising of the three samples studied. At the two iron target grades overall yields and iron recoveries of 72.9–65.4 per cent and 85.2– 80.2 per cent was achieved. In both instances the silica grade exceeded the product specification, however if the silica content is the driver the target iron grade should increase to 63.32 per cent. This will result in a minimal decrease in recovery of 0.4 per cent. The promising results of this study indicate that coarse beneficiation of BIF material is possible. These ore types could be blended with superior grade products to improve overall yields and recoveries or sold directly at a 63 per cent Fe product grade whilst sacrificing 0.4–13.3 per cent recovery.

Optimal drill and blast design is a process often neglected by many underground hard rock mines. This is even more important to the new mine where ring designs need to be implemented and refined in a short period of time. In today's environment where more and more mining is being carried out by contract specialists it is the co-operation between a principal and contractor, who are working towards a common goal, that achieves the highest quality end result. The development of drill and blast designs that cause minimal damage to the mine infrastructure is particularly important to Northparke's E26 Block Cave Mine, as it consists of a single extraction level which must survive intact for the life of the mine. The advanced undercut mining method implemented at Northparkes is fired in a sequence which protects the mine development from potentially damaging abutment stress. This paper details how blast designs will be optimised and sequenced to satisfy the conflicting objectives of maximum rock breakage inside the drill pattern and minimum rock damage outside the pattern.

The geological features of the destructive plate margins of the southwest Pacific favour the formation of porphyry type deposits. The major controlling factor favouring the formation of gold-rich deposits of this type is a dense crust. This results in shallow intrusion of large magma bodies beneath andesite stratovolcanoes. Where the intrusives have near vertical sides, the comparatively low temperature of transfer of volatiles from the solidifying melt favours the partitioning of gold into bubbles of volatiles. They reduce the viscosity and density of the melt, resulting in the upward movement of a mineralised melt. With the drop of pressure with upward movement the bubbles separate into a two phase mixture, triggering freezing of the mineralised melt and the formation of a gold mineralised stockwork.

The Western Australian gold industry has approximately 100 operating plahts, mainly CIP/CIL. The nature of the State's rapidly expanding gold industry gave rise to concerns over management of the  cyanide hazard, in that most plants are remote from major population centres, have a workforce with a high tum over and use highly saline process water. Approximately 4500 workers in the industry have the potential to be exposed to cyanide in the course of their normal work.   This paper outlines the risk management strategy developed by Government and industry to monitor atmospheric HCN gas in the work environment and the role of continuing education and training along with regular site inspections by Department of Mines Inspectors.

Gold mining in Australia and globally has a long and variable history. In recent years, due to ongoing public concern over long-term environmental impacts, the mining industry globally has been moving towards a more sustainable framework, presented as the æMining, Minerals and Sustainable DevelopmentÆ (MMSD) framework at the Johannesburg Earth Summit in 2002. There are a number of fundamental issues and concerns with assessing the sustainability of mining. Firstly, long-term trends show that ore grades for almost all metals and minerals will continue to decline (some rapidly so), increasing waste rock is being produced due to the trend towards large-scale open cut mining and more complex ores are now commonly being developed. The impact of these trends on the resource intensity, or unit cost, of gold production is of major concern as it could lead to an increase in energy, water and reagent consumption and greenhouse emissions per unit gold produced. A detailed compilation of these fundamental sustainability indices for gold mining has been undertaken, and is presented with respect to indices over time, ore grade and ore throughput. A clear observation is that the resource intensity of gold mining is extremely sensitive to the ore grade, with energy, water and cyanide consumption and greenhouse emissions rising significantly as ore grade decreases. Based on the gold ore resources at operating mines and other known gold deposits, it is most likely that the average gold ore grade will continue to decline, leading to increased resource intensity and consequent environmental impacts (assuming no breakthrough new technologies occur). These findings are of major importance to understanding the sustainability of gold mining. The final judgement of the sustainability of gold mining therefore must take into account the sensitivity of the ore grade in the resource intensity of gold production.

Privately-owned companies considering investing in the resources sector can optimise their investment decisions by adopting a systematic technical assessment of acquisition assets, similar to the approach commonly adopted by public financial institutions and publicly-listed companies.Technical due diligence provides a process to identify key geological, mining, geotechnical, metallurgical, environmental and social risks and opportunities and determine the most likely business case and valuation of assets. Technical due diligence is commonly carried out in parallel with legal, commercial and financial due diligence, often involving the acquirer, to maximise the understanding of the investment.There are significant advantages in investors conducting a comprehensive technical due diligence, which typically involves site visits and project assessment to international standards by an independent, multidisciplinary team of experts. The outcomes provide the opportunity for the investor to make early, informed decisions and to understand and manage risks.Technical due diligence may be carried out at several stages: when considering and weighing up a number of investment options, prior to and during a transaction or immediately post-transaction. In the first stage, the outcomes will inform the choice of investment and, more particularly, whether there are any fundamental flaws in the projects being considered. In the second stage, due diligence outcomes can inform the level of investment and approach to risk management and planning. Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. The 2 Moz Vogue mineral resource is a recent discovery at the Sunrise Dam gold mine (SDGM), lying approximately 600 m vertically below the Sunrise Dam open pit. Unlike most other lodes, which are dominated either by steep vein sets or shallow high-strain (shear) zones, it lies broadly in the hinge of a folded felsic porphyry body, where it cuts intermediate volcanic lavas and volcaniclastic rocks and is not specifically concentrated at a lithofacies contact. The mineralisation is controlled by a complex interplay of moderate to shallow, west-dipping high-strain zones that are transected by irregular and discontinuous high-grade, north-west-, north–south- and east–west-trending breccia sheets that initially caused problems with attempts to model broad domains. However, by combining the structural controls and styles with the distribution of gold, arsenic, sulfur and antimony, we have improved opportunities for scheduling, extracting and processing the most appropriate material considering the current mining and processing constraints.The early delineation process for the Vogue lode revealed a significant mineral resource for the SDGM, coupled with the recognition of some potentially difficult downstream implications for mining and processing. The ultimate success of mining at Vogue will be a consequence of combining standardised data collection and geological modelling techniques with the results of the novel innovative techniques applied at an early stage of the project.Innovation (in the truest sense) drives change and application to deliver efficient and effective outcomes. Initial data generation and interpretation in lodes above Vogue provided a sound geological model based on strong structural foundations, leading to ideas that could be tested and validated by stress inversion analysis and modelling simulations. Geomechanical modelling simulations, based on the structural analysis, then provided an insight into both the structural and fluid evolution of the system and highlighted target areas. This promoted support for deeper drilling and sampling, which lead to the discovery of Vogue.With additional data, the structural model for Vogue was re-engineered through combination with geochemical and hyperspectral analysis and detailed geological and geostatistical domaining. Initial poor results from metallurgical tests from a small batch sample refocused efforts to undertake mineral and chemical characterisation and profiling (geometallurgy) and combine this data with the composite geological-structural-geochemical model. "Work in CSIRO with several Australian ores has shown that?by heating a high-phosphorus goethitic iron ore and then leaching with caustic or acid, the phosphorus levels in the ore can be lowered to a commercially acceptable value of around 0.08 weight per cent phosphorus (P). With increasing heating temperatures up to 1300¦C, the extent of phosphorus removal increased. This is considered to be associated with mineralogical changes in the iron oxide phases in the ore during the heating.Little phosphorus was removed from four high-phosphorus goethitic iron ores containing 0.12 - 0.16 weight per cent P in leaches with boiling water. However, leaches with sulfuric acid removed ten to 20 weight per cent of the phosphorus and leaching with sodium hydroxide removed even more phosphorus to produce leach products containing between 0.08 and 0.12 weight per cent P from three of the ores.After heating at 300¦C, leaches at a low pulp density of 0.5 weight per cent solids with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4 gave leach products with 0.06 - 0.09 weight per cent P. The lixiviant concentration required and extent of phosphorus removal depended on the ore. At a higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids, leach residues with between 0.07 - 0.14 weight per cent P were obtained.More phosphorus was removed from ores heated at 900¦C. Leaches at both the low and high pulp densities, with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4, gave leach products with 0.05 - 0.09 weight per cent P. However, the lowest phosphorus levels were obtained after heating the ores at 1200 or 1300¦C and leaching with 1 M NaOH or 0.1 M H2SO4. Leach residues with 0.02 - 0.06 weight per cent P were obtained, even from leaches at the higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids. Leaching tests on heated samples under heap leaching conditions at ambient temperatures have shown that phosphorus levels can be reduced to similar levels to that achieved in an agitation leach within ten days.CITATION:Fisher-White, M J, Lovel, R R, Sparrow, G J and Washington, B M, 2013. To date, Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL) has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in AMIRA International LimitedÆs (the mineral industries research association) AMIRA P9 project, to develop models for several Anglo Base Metals flotation plants. Further detailed analysis of the data which was generated has realised additional benefits: the various hydrodynamic measurements were useful in comparing cell operating parameters to literature sources, while the laboratory batch tests give an indication of plant recovery potential. A detailed cell by cell mass balance, which is a critical feature of the modelling process, is in its own right a valuable diagnostic tool. Several examples of how this can be used to highlight potential improvement areas in the plants are presented. The added understanding gained from sampling each cell is clear and this is shown to more than compensate for any necessary modifications needed to allow sampling to take place. The model fitting process generates an ore floatability distribution, which is used in the JK SimFloat simulation package to assess the effect of possible changes to each of the circuits. An example of an actual circuit change as a result of this approach is presented. The current limitations of and the potential improvements to the modelling process are also briefly discussed. Future models will be extended to include enhanced size and mineralogical information where the basic models suggest this has potential to improve understanding.

The outstanding environmental management initiatives undertaken by Novacoal at its Western Main Site near Lithgow in New South Wales over the past five years are detailed in this paper. These initiatives have been based on a combination of proven and innovative investigation and implementation techniques, close consultation with regulatory authorities and full support by colliery management. The results of these initiatives have enabled the colliery to exceed its pollution control obligations from a base well below industry standards. The initial poor condition of the mine was the result of over 50 years of traditional mining which paid little regard to environmental management. The transformation of the colliery within such a short period, with limited capital, is considered a model for the N.S.W. coal industry.

Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Limited has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilising spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilise the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

Holla has given a good background to the various methods of subsidence control in the coalfields around Sydney.The present writer notes that in many cases, especially with wide longwall panels, there is not the flexibility to alter the mine layout as there is to some degree with the various pillar extraction methods. For this reason it may not be possible to plan the workings to minimise subsidence and some damage to structures may occur. The cost of repair or the cost of subsidence provisions to minimise damage may be small in relation to the tonnages of coal which would otherwise have to be sterilised. One method of subsidence control which has been in use in the Newcastle area since 1970 is the panel and pillar layout (partial extraction layouts with stable pillars). An extracted panel width of 0.6 times the depth of cover resulted in a maximum subsidence of 115 mm for an extracted seam thickness of 2.2 m.As Holla points out, the extracted panel widths in relation to th depth of cover depend on the particular geological setting. His Fig. 3 shows that the subsidence over a panel width of 0.3 times the cover depth in the Southern Coalfield is the same as over a panel width of 0.55 to 0.6 times the cover depth in the Northern Coalfield.Selective pillar extraction and longwall mining can both be used in the panel and pillar layout. Holla's Figs 2 and 3 are used to estimate the maximum subsidence over an extracted panel of known geometry. Maximum subsidence is related to seam thickness. What provision is made for a reduction in subsidence due to the coal which remains behind in a pillar extraction panel if the pillar recovery is poor? The writer suggests that an effective seam height could be used, based on the actual mining height reduced by a factor to account for the percentage recovery of coal from an extracted panel.

"The mining industry is the source for the vast majority of the metal, mineral and energy resources we use on a daily basis. New deposits are discovered over time and are developed into mines before being rehabilitated – a sequence that when repeated can help contribute to the noble notion of ‘sustainable development’, despite the generic concept of mining being the unsustainable consumption of non-renewable resources. The scale of the modern mining industry is immense – from iron ore and coal to base and precious metals, modern mines are sometimes hundreds or thousands of times bigger than their long lost historic ancestors. We also live in a world with emerging and increasing demands for so-called technology metals (aka ‘critical’, ‘e-tech’ or ‘specialty’ metals) that are needed to feed the rapid growth in renewable energy (especially solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines), consumer electronics, sophisticated military technologies and super alloys, amongst other uses. These elements include the rare earth elements, indium, germanium, tellurium, rhenium, selenium, gallium and many others, most of which had few or no known uses in the recent past. Although the mining industry has been successful in developing ever larger mines and increasing the scale of production, the key issues underlying the future of the industry are declining ore grades, increased tailings and waste rock generation, the presence of toxic or other impurities, balancing the economics of primary and secondary products, stricter environmental conditions, more difficult exploration, increasing community expectations, as well as the processing of more complex or refractory ores, let alone the recent volatility in world commodity markets. Here, we synthesise our recent research on many of these various issues, focusing on the need to link all areas within the mining chain from mineral resources through mining to environmental performance in order to ensure we obtain the most out of our modern mining effort. The paper presents a unique and detailed assessment of the sustainability challenges and opportunities facing modern mining – and geometallurgical thinking is at the heart of this conundrum.CITATION:Mudd, G M, Jowitt, S M, 2016. Consolidated Rutile Limited (CRL) was one of the best performing mining stocks of the turbulent 1980s, having a very high payout of franked dividends. In contrast to some other mining groups, it was not highly involved in the speculative lead-up to the 1987 sharemarket crash. Its base was firmly laid through a succession of decisions that were taken in the period 1982-1985. These decisions and the rationale behind them are outlined in this paper. CRL began the 1980s in a highly favourable position. It had successfully pioneered the transition to high-throughput mining of the high dunes on North Stradbroke Island (NSI), commissioning its 2100 tph cutter suction dredge at the Bayside reserves in 1978 at the time of rising prices, such that it was able to pay off its modest bank loan within 18 months. The June 1980 results showed a record after-tax profit of $5.6M, from total assets fo $26.5M and sales tonnages of rutile and zircon of around 50,000 tonnes each.

Industrial minerals by definition are minerals used as part of an industrial process and usually are one of a number of components, eg finely ground Limestone is an extender in the manufacture of paint. They are normally non-metallic and non-fuel, but like all generalisations there are a number of exceptions. Take rutile û a source of titanium, a metal and also the raw material in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment. Industrial minerals under this general definition include construction and agricultural minerals. They are included in the same grouping, principally because their sources are similar and in many cases the raw material, example limestone, can be multi-functional. Calcium carbonate raw materials such as limestone, are used in a wide range of applications from industry as an inert filler, to agriculture as a 'lime' source and to construction and as an important component in the manufacture of cement. As far as this paper is concerned I will avoid discussing the agricultural or construction applications, including burnt lime production.
