Australians are at the forefront of exporting their mining expertise in a number of areas. Minerals education is just one example. The growing economies of Southeast Asia host some of the most prospective mineral fields in the world. Laos for example, hosts the world class Sepon and Phu Kham copper-gold deposits. The Philippines has the fifth largest global mineral resource inventory. These and other countries in the region lack the mining engineers, geologists and metallurgists required by international mining companies to ensure their operations are sustainable. This paper describes the author’s experience in working with mining schools in Southeast Asia and specifically the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Various strategies to ensure sustainability and lessons learnt are presented.

The M2 Upgrade Project involved widening 15 km of the existing M2 Motorway, which is a key route in Sydney’s road network. The Norfolk Twin Tunnels in North Epping convey traffic over a 460 m length of the motorway. The project involved widening the twin tunnels to provide a third lane and breakdown lane in each direction.The widening of the tunnels was fundamentally different to other ‘greenfield’ tunnel projects in that the operation of the tunnel was maintained throughout construction, with motorway traffic permitted close to the excavation faces on a daily basis. The widened works had to integrate with the existing tunnel support, construction details, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure.The existing tunnel afforded the opportunity to review existing ground conditions in the tunnel. Exposures were mapped within the tunnel, and key design parameters were back-analysed from the original monitoring data to provide increased confidence in the assessed impact from the widening works.Traffic capacity of the tunnels was maintained by detailed staging of the works, and included the ability to reopen the tunnels at short notice.A permit to tunnel system was developed to manage the risks associated with re-opening the tunnel to traffic. A comprehensive suite of instrumentation was maintained to provide reliable monitoring data to support this process. Emphasis on the robustness and reliability of tunnel instrumentation provided increased confidence in the adequacy of the tunnel support being installed. The monitoring was routinely compared with design predictions to check the adequacy of the support measures being installed and confirm the design.The approaches and methodologies developed for the widening of the Norfolk Tunnels were effective in maintaining the safe operation of the tunnels throughout the two years of construction, and provide a framework for increasing the capacity of existing tunnel infrastructure in the future.CITATION:Clarke, S J, de Ambrosis, A L, Bertuzzi, R and Redelinghuys, J, 2014. The Hill 50 Gold Mine is situated at Boogardie, 3 miles on a bearing of 295 degrees from; Mount Magnet township. Mount Magnet lies 300 miles north-north-east of Perth, Western Australia (Fig. 1).The older workings of the mine may be identified with those of Sirdar, Gold Mining Lease 696M The Sirdar had been worked before 1902 though no records remain, and irom 1903 to 1912 about a thousana tons at a grade of 6' 2 dwt. was extracted annually; by the end of 1918 6,225 oz. of gold had been obtained from the milling of 17,852 tons of ore. In view of these yields, and the length and width of the lode, this mine was early recognized as one of the most promising in the district. From 1919 to 1924 the ground,including G.M.L. 1282M, was held as Mt. Zion G.M.L. 1183M.The Hill 50 Gold Mine N.L. company took up the workings as Hill 50 G.M.L. 1282M in 1934 and have continued operations to the date of writing. To the end of 1956 the Hill 50 Gold Mine had yielded 982,106 tons of ore for a return of 448,'602 fine oz. of gold.The mine has been described by: J utson (1915), Feldtmann (1920), Johnson (1949), and Finucane (1953). Finucane (1953) details the mine structure to a depth of 414 ft. The author was able to examine the mine to a depth of 1305 ft. Detailed main level mapping to the 1060 level and a detailed surface examination have revealed aspects of the structure which were previously obscure.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and may I thank you for inviting me once again to address your conference. I would first like to welcome you all, especially international delegates and conference speakers. ItÆs a pleasure to be with you all and I hope that you have the time to enjoy the many beautiful sights that the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty have to offer.   Holding your conference in Waihi is particularly apt, especially bearing in mind the conference theme û 'Mining in the Community'. There can be few venues in the world that can boast a world class gold deposit of the likes of Martha Hill located right here in the centre of a rural service town. ItÆs a deposit that has a mining history active now in its third century and that to date has yielded some 7.5 million ounces of gold and 50 million ounces of silver. I doubt that when John McCombie and Robert Lee discovered gold at Martha Hill in 1878 that they had any inkling that their endeavours would be the foundation for a mine that would become such an inseparable part of the economic and social fabric of Waihi for the next 130 years.   This is now my fifth appearance at a New Zealand minerals conference, I especially value such occasions as it allows me to comment on your industryÆs performance over the past year, share my thoughts on matters affecting your industry, and also to give you some feedback from central government.

Fluctuations in periodic reconciliations between the mine and the mill are an expected and common experience in mining and processing operations. These fluctuations are caused in part by errors in the estimates of tonnage and grade of the mined material as well as errors in the millÆs assessment of the material processed. Keeping these errors small and unbiased is an important aspect of an efficient operation whose primary goal is to derive maximum benefit from the exploitation of the mineral resource.These fluctuations in periodic reconciliations can also mask subtle but economically important problems which may take years to identify and resolve. Such problems can result from a poorly-conceived model of the mineralisation which affects both the spatial distribution of the ore as well as the tonnage - grade distribution over the range of cut-off grades. Poorly conceived models of the mineral resources and ore distribution can arise as a result of insufficient and inadequate?drilling and sampling of the mineralisation, inappropriate?application of geological?constraints in the estimation process and the use of inappropriate methods to estimate the block grade distribution. This paper presents three case studies from gold and copper mining operations, two of which experienced significant problems with their mine to mill reconciliations over extended periods of time. For the gold mine in case study 1, sampling problems were ultimately considered to be the main cause of the poor reconciliations between grade control predictions and the mill which persisted over a period of 18 months. In addition, incorrect application of resource modelling methods contributed significantly to a mismatching of the mill capacity with the mine at the beginning of operations. For the underground copper mine in case study 2, a change in the approach taken to resource modelling brought marked improvements in ore definition and more accurate predictions of ore grade and better production forecasts.The third case study describes the background to the expansion of production to exploit a large tonnage of lower-grade stockwork mineralisation in an open pit gold mine. Several years of favourable Mine to Mill reconciliation data from the mining and processing of higher grade and lower grade stockwork styles of gold mineralisation provided the confidence in the approach to grade control to support the expansion plans during a period of low gold prices.The paper is intended to complement the discussion of mineral resource estimation methods and risks in Section 6.1.3 of the Mine ManagersÆ Handbook to be published by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (Schofield, 2012).CITATION:Schofield, N A, Moore, J and Carswell, J T, 2012. Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd, a wholly owned Government of India Enterprise, was established in the year 1976 to develop mine and plant facilities to produce 7.5 Mtpa of high-grade iron ore concentrate at Kudremukh. The mine and plant facilities were commissioned in 1980. In view of high demand for iron oxide pellets in iron and steel industry worldwide and as a diversification activity, a pelletisation plant of 3.0 Mtpa capacity was commissioned in the year 1987 at Mangalore for production of high-quality blast furnace and direct reduction grade pellets for export. The pellet plant capacity has been increased to 3.5 Mtpa by technological improvement which included installation of roll press for quality and productivity improvement. In addition, the pellet capacity is being increased to 4 Mtpa by the addition of Shaft Pelletising Furnace plant.

Since its inception in 1962, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has adopted the view that an effective method of training highly qualified engineers for the mineral industry is the pursuit of postgraduate research programmes conducted in operations, that is, in the mines and processing plants of the industry which the research serves. The paper describes how this is achieved in practice, at little or no cost to the taxpayer, and explores the strengths and weaknesses of this approach in the context of a dual mission for the Centre: 1. The postgraduate training of engineers for the mineral industry. 2. The production of useful R &I) for the mineral industry. Topics discussed include financing, relationships with industry and Government, the maintenance of academic excellence, research style, the marketing of research, and limits to growth.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia, about 50 km north of the town of Southern Cross. Ore is trucked from three geographically isolated sources to the crusher at Koolyanobbing, where it is blended before and during crushing. Lump and fines products are produced and railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR is examining alternative processing paths, from mining to ship loading, with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing costs. Modifications to the system must be consistent with potential future expansions and maintain the low inter-shipment grade variability on which CNR prides itself and has built a strong relationship with its customers. In searching for the optimum process design, many options from mine face to ship loading must be evaluated and compared. Pilot plant studies are infeasible, while complex mineralogical interactions, competing goals and numerous possible system configurations limit the applicability of theoretical analysis. It was therefore concluded that simulation modeling would provide the confidence to take the next step into production trials. This paper describes techniques applied at CNR to simulate grade variability resulting from potential process design changes. The simulation models are easily run Excel-based modules, with each module representing a different part of the process. The modules use extensive Visual Basic macros driven by Excel's user-friendly interfaces. Presentation of the results is enhanced by Excel's excellent graphical capabilities. The simulation software stores and graphically presents time-stamped data from a run, enabling detailed analysis of different process configurations. Final success of a simulation run is measured by inter-shipment variability (standard deviation and process capability) and in-process ore tonnages. Meaningful results from the simulations require the initial input data contain the same correlations present in the real production environment, between the mineral components, production linkages and across time. The data also have to allow simulation of potential changes to mining method and introduction of new pits into the blend. Mining data from the real operations under study are therefore used, with average grades and variability adjusted to match potential future development proposals. It is also necessary to filter out medium and long-term variations from the production data as this variability is best controlled through the conventional medium to long-term mine planning process, not by the process design being studied. The filtering was carried out using a Fourier transform technique, which is described.

Bio-Oxidation of Arsenic and Stibium Bearing Gold Ores Bio-oxidation of arsenic and stibium bearing gold ores with acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied. The preoxidation results show that the best bio-oxidation technical parameters are the initial pH in the range of 1.8 ~ 2.0, particle sizes under 0.074 mm, temperature in the range of 25¦C ~ 30¦C and rotating speed of the orbital incubator in 100 rpm ~ 160 rpm. The leaching results show that If the ore, of which contain 10.37 per cent arsenic and 36.81 per cent stibium, is not bio-oxidised, gold leaching is only about 41 per cent, after 8 days oxidised, the result is about 76.55 per cent, which improved about 35.62 points. The relationship between gold leaching and arsenic oxidation is direct proportion, furthermore, it needs only partly oxidise and higher gold leaching could be get, for example, gold leaching is over 90 per cent when asenic oxidation is 60 per cent. The results will provide theoretical and technological supports of bio-oxidation arsenopyrite for pretreating refractory gold ores.

A sulfide ion selective electrode was used to control sulfidiser addition in the flotation testing of a synthetic and a naturally occurring ore containing malachite in order to compare the behaviour of sodium sulfide and calcium polysulfide. Both slug and controlled potential sulfidisation methods of addition were used. Under defined optimum CPS conditions, calcium polysulfide was a more effective sulfidising agent than sodium sulfide on the basis of both capital and operating costs. Surface and solution studies were used to compare the mechanism of each sulfidiser. For calcium polysulfide, XPS showed that polysulfide ions are adsorbed, whereas for sodium sulfide it is the hydrosulfide ions that are adsorbed on the mineral surface. For calcium polysulfide, the CuSx layer was believed to form on the malachite surface, which promoted the flotation of the malachite, by xanthate. Studies of surface morphology of the sulfidised malachite showed that a fairly uniform sulfidised layer is formed with both reagents. The use of sodium sulfide resulted in a thinner initial sulfidised layer compared to polysulfide at equivalent initial sulfur concentration.

This paper reviews rehabilitation, closure, and post-closure management of the Tui, Golden Cross, and Martha Mines, all of which are located in the Waikato Region of New Zealand. There was no requirement for rehabilitation of the Tui mine, which was abandoned in 1973. There was a requirement to rehabilitate the Golden Cross mine. Mining at that site ceased in 1997, and rehabilitation is now well advanced. When first approved, there were some requirements for rehabilitation of the Martha Mine, but when reconsented in 1998, those were extended, and in addition a requirement for post-closure management was included. As a result, a Trust, funded by the mining company, has been established to take long-term responsibility for the site following completion of closure. The different rehabilitation/closure requirements at each of these sites illustrates that we have learnt something from the experiences of the past.

Management of historic tailings is a major challenge facing the mining industry and its regulators. However, through improved mineralogical and chemical characterisation of such materials the opportunity to develop better rehabilitation strategies arises. Microanalytical techniques including microscopy, mineral liberation analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allow for improved tailings characterisation – but the challenge posed by these techniques is how to use them effectively. Additionally, data sets collected by such techniques must be properly integrated, only then can they assist in the identification of the most appropriate rehabilitation strategies. A study conducted at the Old Tailings Dam (OTD) located at the Savage River Mine, Tasmania allowed for the integrated use of several microanalytical techniques to help evaluate the benefits of a shallow water cover as a potential rehabilitation strategy. Samples (n = 144) from 14 trenches and 11 boring cores (2 m maximum depth) were collected across the OTD. These were subjected to routine acid-base accounting, with a subset subjected to detailed mineralogy using a modified sulfide alteration index (SAI), X-ray diffractometry and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). In addition, representative samples (n = 6) from across the OTD were subjected to laser-ablation ICPMS to characterise the pyrite chemistry. Our results showed that tailings in the northern area submerged under a natural water cover were relatively unoxidised from approximately 1 m depth, with SAI values of 1 to 2. Tailings from the subaerial southern portion were extensively oxidised to approximately 35 cm depth (SAI = maximum 5.8), with fresher materials observed underneath (SAI = 5 to 5.8). Pyrite from across the OTD is enriched in Co, Cu and Ni. Through the integrated application of microanalytical tools, we determined that establishing a water cover of at least 1.5 m depth across the OTD is a suitable rehabilitation option for this historic site. This paper looks at the past, present and not too distant future of grinding mill relining.Since the adoption of autogenous grinding (AG) mills and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills as the primary ore reducing devices in the comminution circuit, plant shutdown frequency and duration has largely been driven by the liner maintenance requirements of these mills.The past 30 years have seen the introduction of many technologies to reduce relining times and frequencies. Advanced relining systems have been developed which include single and twin Mill Relining Machines, capable of placing large (up to 8000 kg) liners, high energy recoilless THUNDERBOLT Hammers, and high capacity Feed Chute Transporters. Despite these advances, today many of the hazards associated with mill relining remain and reline times still vary considerably between mine sites. A sophisticated discrete event simulation program, designed to analyse the mill relining process, has revealed the dominant influences on reline times of crew performance and of the need for safe access to larger segments of the mill.A new generation of advanced and semi-automated technologies is currently being tested that will address these remaining challenges. The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance often deviates from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral resource and reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.The key concept of real-time mining promotes a change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online data acquired during extraction at the mining face, material handling and processing with a sequentially updatable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimisation of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control.The proposed framework integrates the following building blocks in a holistic manner: automated sensor-based material characterisationonline machine performance measurementsunderground navigation and positioningunderground mining system simulation and optimisation of planning decisionsupdating techniques for resource/reserve models.This paper introduces the real-time mining concept and the building blocks and provides a review of the state-of-the-art. Technological readiness of necessary building blocks is assessed, and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. To assess the present-day functionality of large-scale sublevel caving at LKAB Kiruna a comprehensive measurement program was undertaken involving blast function, fragmentation and gravity flow. As part of this assessment, a fragmentation measurement trial was performed based on 3D imaging of the drawpoint and corresponding bucket load of the underground load-haul-dump (LHD) excavator. 3D image data from stereo photogrammetry was collected and an automated image analysis strategy developed. A number of data sets were collected for each of the drawpoint and LHD bucket, along with sieving results for four of the LHD bucket loads (totally about 70 t). Two of the sieving results were used to inform the automated image analysis strategy, and two were held back as a comparison. Large variations in the visible particles are apparent when comparing corresponding drawpoints and LHD buckets highlighting the impact of sampling location and the need to measure large quantities of data in order to avoid bias from small samples. The results show that 3D imaging and analysis can produce fully automated measurement and analysis of the visible particle size distribution. Although this is not the same as the sieve-size distribution it provides useful estimation of both the larger size classes and a bulk estimate of fine material below approximately 60 mm. The 3D stereo photogrammetry measurement system used produced very high 3D point density but this was achieved using a custom up-sampling technique which significantly smoothed the data, removing small particles, smoothing edges, and this negatively affected the particle delineation algorithms.CITATION:Thurley, M J, Wimmer, M and Nordqvist, A, 2015. The structure and tectonic setting has had a strong influence on gold mineralisation at the Porgera gold deposit. Here, the structural controls on the mineralisation at Porgera are discussed and placed in a regional tectonic context. The Porgera gold deposit is related to the emplacement of the Porgera Intrusive Complex. Prior to intrusive emplacement at Porgera,Papua New Guinea was affected by a major fold and thrust episode which occurred in response to arc-continent collision in the Late Miocene. After crustal shortening the region experienced a relaxation of compression which is expressed in the deformation accompanying mineralisation at Porgera. The first stage of mineralisation (stage I) is hosted by extension fractures, and is spatially associated with exposed intrusive stocks. A later episode of mineralisation (stage II) is hosted by the faults and fractures of the Roamane Fault Zone, which was active as a dip-slip normal fault during stage II mineralisation. Therefore a change in the tectonic environment from shortening to extensional tectonics can be seen at Porgera before and during mineralisation. Rapid fault-slip during stage II mineralisation may have aided high-grade gold mineralisation by subjecting hydrothermal fluids to changes in pressure, temperature, fluid-fluid and fluid-rock interaction. Uplift to form the highlands of Papua New Guinea occurred after mineralisation and was largely complete by 4.0 Ma.

In a visionary move, the Planning Commission and the Ministry for Planning in Western Australia decided to invite three extractive industry quarry operators, local government councils and State Government departments (Minerals and Energy, Environmental Protection, South West Development Commission) to contribute jointly to study the impacts of blasting on areas surrounding basalt quarries in the Bunbury region of WA. The results of the study will help establish suitable zones in which land uses will be controlled under a proposed Greater Bunbury Region Scheme and in local planning schemes, to minimise conflicting land uses. This paper discusses the blasting program conducted to characterise and model the vibration behaviour of the rock under the effects of pilot-scale and full production blasting, and highlights some of the benefits achievable when a thorough blasting impact program and assessment is conducted at the planning stages of land-use establishment.
