The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern QuTbec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed by ultra-fine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultra-fine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulfides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 ¦ and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3 per cent S, 0.07 per cent Cu and traces of antimony (0.03 per cent). The mineralogical characterisation showed the presence of 65 per cent gangue minerals, 23 per cent pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6 per cent arsenopyrite, 2.2 per cent pyrite and 0.08 per cent chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05 per cent) and sphalerite (0.03 per cent). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3 - 5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20¦C and for 72 hours extracted 97.0 per cent Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7 per cent Au extraction. A 16-hour pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-hour cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5 per cent. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0 per cent. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2 per cent. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80 per cent. Efficient cyanidation of an ultra-fine sulfide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultra-fine sulfide concentrates. The high addition of lead nitrate would certainly make cyanide destruction easier; consequently reducing the effluent treatment costs and making possible to meet the discharge regulations criteria.CITATION:DeschOnes, G and Fulton, M, 2013. The Hidden Secret ore body is located within the Mt Charlotte underground mining system in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Mineralisation of the Hidden Secret ore body is lode style and therefore differs from the typical economical mineralisation mined at Mt Charlotte and consequently demanded a novel approach to the mining methodology. The ore body is lens like in shape, extending 200m along strike, 210m vertically, and dipping at 55 degrees. The lode width varies from 1.5m at the extremities to over 22m in the central zone of the ore body. Average grade is 3.4 Au grams per tonne. The initial mining methodology was Modified Avoca utilising Longhole Open Stoping with pillars, in a bottom up stoping sequence. However, as Hidden Secret became better defined and wider than initially modelled, it was identified that a high portion of gold would remain in the pillars and other mining concerns emerged such as remote backfilling large open voids and potentially unsafe vertical standoff distances between levels and wide open stopes. A re-evaluation of this method was undertaken and a new approach adapting a variation of Avoca methodology was identified to remove the rib pillars and replace them with a sill pillar separating the 4 levels into 2 distinct blocks. This new approach provided an immediate advantage by removing the bogger backfilling activity from the same level of the active stope front, enabling stope drilling and prepping to occur during the backfilling cycle. Bogging productivity has also improved as the fired ore is funnelled to the draw point by the backfill rill, significantly reducing the requirement for remote bogging thus improving bogging productivity. This mining method is currently in progress in the first of the two mining blocks and is on track to realise the targeted recovery of 7,700 ounces from the rib pillars.

The district specially referred to in this paper comprises the very gently sloping country extending from the western shores of Port Phillip from the mouth of the Yarra to Footscray along the Bacchus Marsh railway to near that town thence in a southerly direction to the Little River, and along that river to the coast, 1 as may be seen on the accompanying map. Almost the whole of this area is covered by volcanic rocks, consisting of pumerous sheets of basalt, which have been poured out of various volcanic hills in the districts, such as Mts. Atkinson and Cotteril, near Melton; Mt. Maryand Bald Hill, 12 and 16 miles respectively N.W. of Werribee; and vents in different parts of the parishes of Tarneit, Mouyong, Mooradoranook, Pyweitjorrk, and Derrimut. These volcanoes were in an active state of eruption during a late period of the earth's historyprobably the late Pliocenll, or still younger Pleistocene.Occupying a narrow strip of country, for most of the distance along the coast from Williamstown to past the mouth of the Little River, there occur deposits of still younger age, belonging to the Recent period. These lie on the basalt, and extend for distances varying from a few chains to more than a mile back from the beach. They comprise superficial deposits of blown sand, and raised beaches, composed of marine sands...

International regulations exist to manage the concentrations of mycotoxins such as Ochratoxin A (OTA) and deoxynivalenol (DON) in grains and prevent health risks from excessive exposure to OTA and DON. Since the permitted levels of these mycotoxins are very low (existing maximum levels are in the range of 5 ppb for OTA and 1–2 ppm for DON), sampling for these mycotoxins is potentially challenging. Given that the distribution of infected kernels in a consignment of wheat can be highly heterogeneous, detection by current sampling methods is subject to a high variance. Furthermore, the concentrations of mycotoxins in individual kernels vary over orders of magnitude, intensifying the heterogeneity of the bulk grain.In these circumstances, there is much interest in developing sampling plans that inform regulatory agencies, and mitigate the risk of misclassifying grain shipments as compliant or non-compliant within the global grain trade, when correctly implemented.Experimental data from laboratory and field studies describing individual wheat kernel concentrations of OTA and DON were combined with experimental data describing the variance due to the analytical methods used for OTA and DON to calculate the sampling distribution for wheat having various levels of contamination. This work has focused on quantifying the heterogeneity of samples at the point of submission for analysis and within subsequent sample preparation to arrive at total sampling distributions that include uncertainties due to the intrinsic heterogeneity and the analytical uncertainties. Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals frum points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments shaved that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 ¦m had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slav floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one thiro of the lead losses in the final tails. All sizes of zinc values between 150 mesh and 7 ¦m floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the -7 ¦m fraction. The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

The Mogalakwena North Concentrator of Anglo Platinum Operations was built with the capability to allow for future projected expansion. Several research groups, currently working with Anglo American on collaborative research over a range of projects, were brought in to review the existing operation, with a view to releasing some specific bottlenecks and providing specialist design input to the potential plant expansion.Based on a thorough review of the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and crushing circuit, a wide range of de-bottlenecking opportunities were identified. This was followed by a series of surveys to provide performance measurements and to model the circuit in detail. From this effort a full simulation of the plant has been developed, including updated models of the HPGR, crusher, bins and screens. These models have been implemented in the researchersÆ Model Development Kit (MDK) version of JKSimMet, and in a prototype dynamic simulator based on the Matlab Simulink software.The observations, measurements and simulations have provided guidance and quantified the benefits of some proposed circuit modifications. Based on these findings a number of upgrades are being planned, with the aim of ensuring full utilisation of the installed equipment. Waitemata Tectonic Event(25 Ma ago) created a subduction system from the northeast of Northland, causing: (1) the emplacement of the Northland Allochthon (24-23 Ma) which provided argillaceous limestone and serpentine to Northland, and minor copper to both there and East Cape (located off Northland then); and (2) Northland volcanism (from 22 Ma), which lacked economic mineralisation. The Kiwitahi Tectonic Event (1714 Ma) caused: (1) a realignment of volcanism - from coastal western Northland, to west of the Hauraki Plains (Kiwitahi); (2) a start to the migration southwards from Northland of (a) the Alpine Fault System towards Marlborough today, (b) subduction towards Cook Strait, and (c) volcanism towards Taranaki-to-Bay of Plenty (initially through Coromandel, Kiwitahi, and offshore west coast); and (3) a start to rhyolitic volcanism & associated hydrothermal activity. The latter caused epithermal mineralisation, providing in Coromandel the best known North Island metalliferous deposits. Andesitic volcanism has been active in both of these two contrasting, subequal belts since 22 Ma. Rhyolitic volcanism and hydrothermal activity was wholly restricted to the eastern Marshall Belt, with an abrupt limit to economic mineralisation at the Volcanic Divide (within Hauraki Plains) and a major change there to basaltic volcanism of the western Searle Belt. The Kaimai Tectonic Event (5-1.5 Ma) caused: (1) a temporary reversal in volcanic migration in the Searle Belt, and a duplication of rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity at Waihi (Marshall Belt); (2) the rotational rifting of both the Central Volcanic Region (by 30¦) and the Hauraki Rift (10¦), causing major curvature of the North Island and New Zealand, and the transfer of the offshore subduction system from Coromandel to East Coast; and (3) an effective end to Coromandel mineralisation. Post-Kaimai Volcanism (1.5-0 Ma) included: (1) andesitic volcanism in the Searle Belt, yielding the western coastal titanomagnetite deposits; and (2) andesitic, and rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity in the Marshall Belt - the latter providing geothermal energy, sulphur, and pumice/perlite deposits. Post-Subduction (Intraplate) Volcanism (10-0 Ma) developed in a steadily expanding northwest region of relative tectonic quiescence, as subduction and its volcanism migrated southwards. Intraplate volcanism was predominantly basaltic, providing excellent aggregate; but less common rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity provided geothermal potential and mercury at Ngawha and at Puhipuhi, and halloysitic clays of extreme brightness elsewhere in Northland. This volcanism has reached as far SE as Mayor Island, providing an early New Zealand mineral resource - obsidian.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baiyinnuo’er Zn-Pb deposit is a typical skarn deposit in NE China. Skarn and orebodies mainly occur between different units of the Lower Permian Huanggangliang Formation carbonates-sandstone-mudstone or within the contact between intrusions and marble. Skarn minerals are dominated by prograde garnet and clinopyroxene, and the main ore minerals are sphalerite and galena. We conducted single fluid inclusion compositional studies using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on clinopyroxene (pre-ore-stage mineral) and sphalerite and calcite (syn-ore-stage minerals). The results show that the Baiyinnuo’er fluids are distinctly different from basinal brine but similar to magmatic fluid, thereby indicating that the deposit has a dominantly magmatic origin. This interpretation has also been supported by the Cl/Br mole ratios, which remain stable (~500) in different fluid stages. The decreases for most of the elements in the fluid inclusions from pre-ore-stage clinopyroxene to syn-ore-stage sphalerite and calcite suggest that mixing with groundwater has occurred during mineralisation, with significant Zn, Pb and Ag deposition.CITATION:Shu, Q, Hammerli, J, Chang, Z, Lai, Y and Huizenga, J-M, 2015. Over the entire life cycle of a mine, from early resource evaluation to the blasting of benches, the collection of geochemical data is crucial for the site operator, who must routinely and intensively drill and sample the orebody. This produces huge numbers of physical samples, in turn requiring significant cost and time for their preparation and assay. Moreover, despite best efforts, the sample recovery process is prone to error, which limits the quality of data.The pulsed neutron gamma technique has been used for decades in various industries, in particular oil logging, for its ability to provide direct identification and quantification of elemental concentrations. However, its implementation in logging tools for the mining sector is relatively recent. Built around the latest in technology for optimal spectrometric measurement, a commercial tool referred to as FastGrade™ 100 has been available for a few years and used with increasing success in the mining environment, specifically the iron ore industry, resulting in a reduction in the amount of collected samples. Relying on the physics of neutrons and gamma photons, both of which are particles that penetrate the surrounding bedrock through several tens of centimetres, such spectroscopy tools measure in real-time the composition of a much larger volume than the delimited volume of the drilled material traditionally used for geochemical mapping. Better statistics and reliability of the estimated composition increase the ability to properly and quickly measure drilled holes and allow the substituting of all or part of the sampling and assaying efforts by geochemical log data. Our paper focuses on this technology, known as pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis (PFTNA). The areas of concern lay in the processing of, and the subsequent hearing into, Waihi Gold's resource consent applications to extend Martha Mine. The proposed amendments to the Resource Management Act 1991 might see the introduction of contestability in the processing of applications - which would have assisted Waihi Gold; and the use of commissioners to hear the applications, with a right of appeal to the Environment Court on points of law only. It is also proposed to have major applications heard directly by the Environment Court. If Waihi Gold's applications had been heard at first instance by the Court, the delays in time and associated costs would have been reduced. However a hearing by commissioners only would not have been satisfactory, there being no right of appeal against the conditions of consent, which if implemented as granted by the Councils would have had a significant impact on the costs associated with the extended project.

Transporting coal by means of conveyor belts is very common in Australian underground coal mines. Major conveyor belt-related mining incidents are now relatively infrequent as a result of recent improvements in engineering standards and use of fire-resistance materials. However, conveyor belts have the potential for incidents capable of causing either personal or structural damage. In addition, any unexpected break down of rolling components or failure of belts creates a significant interruption to the production that is a major concern for operators whose responsibility is to achieve the optimum mining production.Currently, underground coal conveyor belts are examined for the presence of any overheating, smouldering or unsafe conditions likely to cause a fire. Periodic inspection of operating conveyor belts is carried out with the aim of detecting any local heat sources in an early stage. This includes temperature measurements of the driving head, idlers and rollers using hand-held temperature sensors such as infrared cameras or laser temperature sensors. The disadvantages of current conveyor belt temperature monitoring systems include high labour and equipment costs, safety risk to personnel who are in close proximity to moving conveyors, the ability to take line of site measurements only and potential for missed overheated idlers. Some of the conveyor idlers in underground coal operations cannot be accessed for traditional temperature measurements. This introduces a significant risk to the operation of critical infrastructure.A distributed temperature sensing (DTS) system can be used to develop an advanced conveyor belt temperature monitoring system that provides real-time, accurate and continuous temperature measurements along a conveyor belt particularly at the rolling components. The DTS system comprises of fibre optic detection cable, DTS controller and interfacing module. The advantages of the system include the accuracy, low-cost, easy installation, robustness, safety, immunity to radio frequency and electromagnetic interference, real-time data collection, and secure data transmission. This paper presents a scoping study on the development and utilisation of a fibre optic-based DTS system for underground coal conveyor belts. The mechanism of heat generation, the operation temperature range and the installation issues of fibre optic cable along the conveyor belt particularly in close proximity to each end of the spindle on every idler will be discussed.CITATION:Aminossadati, S M and Yang, B, 2013. At Cliffs Natural Resources Ltd (CNR) crushing and shipping sample stations, precisions are estimated for the sampling, preparation and measurement stages of iron ore sampling in accordance with ISO 3085 (2002). In this Standard, gross duplicate samples are prepared at each of the three stages, yielding eight measurement assays. Appropriate calculations of the differences between assay pairs are then made to estimate precision of each stage of sampling. The International Standard for checking precision in iron ore sampling, ISO 3085 (2002) prescribes a method for identifying outliers that is ambiguous and possibly inappropriate. The procedure also makes an unnecessary implicit assumption, that the differences between assay pairs are normally distributed. The Anderson-Darling statistic is used to demonstrate that in some cases the assay pair differences have distributions significantly different from normal. When applied at CNR as specified, the Standard leads to precision estimates well below the expected values, thus overestimating the sampling method's capability and limiting the opportunity for real process improvement. This paper suggests an improved method of estimating sampling, preparation and measurement precision. A bootstrap procedure is used to estimate confidence limits for the calculated precision estimates. The proposed method would be suitable for testing blasthole precision. The discussion is supported by extensive simulation modelling of realistic data.

The project to reopen the Tasmania Mine has centred around efforts to reopen the Hart Shaft to access the high grade reef remaining below the old workings, which extend down to 457 in. Efforts in 1982 and 1987 were frustrated by unstable clay ground around the shaft, which resulted in significant subsidence of the shaft collar and lining. A successful program has since been implemented to solve the problems, stabilize the collar and recover the upper shaft which had collapsed down to 90 m.

Arrium (previously OneSteel) initiated a desktop study into the performance of its hematite ore beneficiation plant in early 2010. The beneficiation plant utilises jig concentrators and spirals to upgrade low-grade hematite recovered during mining at the Iron Duke (ID) mine site located 60 km south-west of Whyalla. The study, conducted in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, identified a number of opportunities for improvement, which were validated by a series of sampling campaigns and a pilot plant trial. One of the major recommendations was to upgrade the ultra-fines processing circuit from a single-stage spiral circuit to a three-stage circuit. The upgrade of the ultra-fines circuit was estimated to provide a significant increase in fines production and grade.In order to capitalise on the strong iron price at the time of the project, Arrium decided to utilise a fast-tracked approach to design, construct and commission the processing equipment required to achieve the improvements identified. This decision introduced the risk of missing critical steps in the project development process, which could have potentially resulted in major issues in latter stages of the project. In addition to the challenges introduced due to the expedited time line for project completion, this project presented unique challenges due to its brownfield nature. One such challenge faced was the integration of the new equipment and control system software.Furthermore, the importance of the ID ore beneficiation plant (OBP) contribution to the companyÆs export commitments meant the upgrade work had to occur while minimising disruption to normal operation. This decision presented a set of new challenges to an already complex project. One such challenge was the need to build and commission the new spiral circuit in isolation from the operating plant.The aim of this paper will be to highlight some of the challenges faced in a complex brownfield project such as the ID OBP upgrade and discuss how they were managed to enable the successful commissioning of the process in early 2012.CITATION:Selvapandian E and Barr, R, 2013. The Barrytown ilmenite pilot plant was commissioned in two stages using Westport Titanium Project heavy mineral concentrate. The wet concentrator was commissioned on the 17 December 1989 and produced magnetic concentrate from this date.   The Drymill was commissioned on the 27 January 1990 and produced product grade ilmenite successfully from the onset.   The commissioning period was exceptionally short by normal standards and few problems were encountered. This paper concludes with general observations of operations of the pilot plant.

On the Kinetics and Equilibrium Models for Biosorption of Ni(II) onto a Gram-Positive Bacteria Strain, Rhodococcus opacus, for Environmental Applications The aim of this fundamental study was to evaluate the biosorption of Ni(II) from aqueous solution streams onto a Rhodococcus opacus strain through kinetics and equilibrium isotherms studies. The biosorption of nickel achieved its highest value in a pH around 5. The experimental data evaluation was carried out focusing three two-parameter models, as: Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin - Radushkevich. In order to determine the best isotherm fit, three error analysis methods were used to assess the data: correlation coefficient (R2), residual root mean square error (RMSE) and Chi-square test. The error analysis established that the Freundlich model fits better the nickel biosorption data. Maximum uptake capacity of nickel reached a value around 7.63 mg.g-1 for R. opacus. The biosorption rate was fast and achieved a removal of around 79 per cent of Ni(II) in the first 5 minutes at room temperature (25 ¦ 2¦C). The experimental kinetics data was evaluated considering two models (pseudo-second order and pseudo-first order). The error analysis established that the pseudo-second order model better fits the data.

Contour blasting is commonly performed by employing linear charges decoupled from the boreholes. This method is common in surface and underground excavations, either for civil or mining purposes. To achieve the best results in terms of rock breakage and respect of the excavation profile, blasting theory suggests that charges should be inserted coaxial to the holes to grant uniform distribution of the explosive energy, therefore obtaining a uniform radius of damage. Nonetheless, due to readiness of operations or lack of availability of specific products on the market, non-coaxial charges are often employed in blasting practice. Non-coaxial charging methods include the employ of high-power detonating cord (40 to 100 g/m), low-power detonating cord connecting small-diameter cartridges (commonly 10 g/m detonating cord priming 1” cartridges) or string loading (a thin layer of bulk emulsion pumped with controlled flow and controlled extraction of the injecting rod). This research focuses on evaluating the effects of the first two charging methods on the quality of final walls in open pit and underground operations. Different drilling geometries and charging configurations were applied to both quarrying and tunnelling blasts. The half-cast factor, the overbreak and the underbreak were evaluated as control indicators. Rock quality designation and rock mass rating were used to classify the rock mass. The research was aimed to push contour blasts to their limits, observing for which geometry and charge configuration the blast lost its design threshold with respect to the final wall for every given rock mass. Results show the operational limits of non-coaxial charges encountered in the rock masses object of this study. In good-quality rock, smooth blasting with decoupled linear charge of 40 g/m can be extended to a spacing S = 22Øf with little or no detectable drawbacks in terms of final wall quality, in contrast with theoretical formulae for the determination of the radius of damage. On the other hand, when the rock is poor, any quality of the final wall is hardly achieved at all, in spite of any care in the details of execution of smooth blasting.
