The magnetic after-effect, in the form of time decay of permeability (l/µ), has been used to obtain independent data on the solubility of' carbon in pure iron. The results differ slightly from the solubilities obtained through internal -friction experiments. The mechanism of the time decay being the magnetic analogue of internal friction, it appears necessary to explain the observed discrepancies, and some suggestions are made. THE purpose of this work was to establish the reliability of the time decay of permeability as a measure of dissolved interstitial in the body-centered-cubic lattice, and further, to establish techniques suitable for such measurements with samples of a form convenient for various other measurements. This particular sample form was the "epstein" strip, i.e., 25 cm by 3 cm by 0.035 cms. While the general conclusions are not limited by this geometry, there are two aspects of the samples that may be relevant: a) texture, and b) grain size, which ranged generally from 1 to 10 mm. Effects due to these two possible parameters were thought to be small and were not investigated. Calibrating the time decay technique and the other experimental procedures by measuring the solubility of carbon in pure iron suggested itself because of the accumulation of data on this subject through the related technique of the internal friction'; The essentials of this report have been published in a somewhat condensed form.5 Since then some additional data have been taken. It is the purpose of this paper to add these data and to provide more complete description of the experimental techniques than was possible then. The time decay of permeability is a form of the magnetic after-effect.6,7 Permeability is measured immediately after demagnetization (µº) and also long after (µ8). The time decay, ?(l/µ), is the difference 1/µ8 - 1/µ0 and has been considered to be proportional to the concentration of a dissolved interstitial6,8,9,12 The relaxation time! 7, is characteristic of a particular diffusion, and affects the permeability as follows: where he being the activation energy for diffusion of the interstitial. Reference is made to the works of snoek6 and Neel7 for a complete discussion. A brief exposition of the principal ideas may be in order here, as follows. On the basis of the simplest model, resistance against domain wall motion increases with time after demagnetization due to the diffusion of interstitials to preferred sites created by the magnetostrictive tetragonolization under the strong magnetic field. Thus permeability, measured with a small field after the abrupt removal of the large field, will continuously fall with the process of diffusion of the interstitials, and the total "time decay" (or "time decrease") should be proportional to the amount of interstitial in solid solution. In the present report, use is made only of the total time decay rather than of the nature of the progress of the decay; the only problem involved in this approach is the need for assurance that only one interstitial is contributing to the effect as used. It is felt that the special use made here of the total time decay warrants the conclusions. Other work has been going on elsewhere on the detailed study of the nature of the time decay.8'9 EXPERIMENTAL A) Materials—12-lb ingots were made in a vacuum furnace from high-purity iron and by a series of hot and warm reductions were brought down to 14-mil strip. This was cut into 25-cm epsteins. The pure iron was decarburized at 750 °C by hydrogen. The time decay measurement for the decarburized iron (see below) indicated a satisfactorily low starting level of interstitials. Grain growth to grain sizes of 1 to 10 mm was produced in the pure iron by a 700" anneal in hydrogen after a critical reduction of about 7 pct as suggested by previous trials. No measurement of texture in the pure iron was made. The grain size was taken to be large enough to be beyond any sharply critical size regarding solubility. B) Infusion of Carbon—Since the permeability measurement required about two dozen epsteins, a special method of carbon infusion had to be developed to ensure homogeneity of infused carbon. THERE have been several statements in the literature about the difficulty of producing single crystals of high-purity (99.99pct) by the strain-anneal method. Consequently, investigators tend to employ low-purity aluminum for their single-crystal experiments, or else resort to the Bridgman or other techniques which depend on solidification for the production of single crystals. The following paragraphs describe a solid-state method for the manufacture of single crystals of high-purity aluminum which should provide crystals with greater perfection than those formed by solidification. The starting material for this method of producing single crystals was secured from the Aluminum Corp. of America and has a purity of 99.99 pct, the balance being trace amounts of impurities. Specimens approximately 1 by 4 in. are sheared from sheet having a nominal 0.050 in. thickness. The specimens are given a preliminary anneal at 640°C for approximately 3 hr in order to remove fabrication strains and to produce an average grain size of about 1/4-in. diam. The specimens are then etched in Tucker's etchant (45 pct HC1, 15 pct HNO3, 15 pct HF and 25 pct H2O) to remove the oxide film. Critical strain is applied by wrapping each specimen about a 1 3/4 in. round and subsequently straightening it against a flat surface. The high-purity aluminum sheet is sufficiently soft that this operation can be accomplished by ordinary finger pressure. The specimens are immediately annealed again at 640°C for 3 hr and reetched for examination. Ordinarily, considerable growth of certain of the grains will have occurred, and occasionally a single crystal will be produced on the first attempt. The procedure of alternately straining, annealing and etching is repeated until the majority of a batch of specimens contains usable crystal sizes. Typical examples are illustrated in Fig. 1. The greatest changes in crystal sizes are produced in the initial treatments. As the average crystal sizes get coarser in the later treatments, the sever- ity of the strain must be increased in order to produce grain boundary- migration. This increase in severity is effected by decreasing the diameter of the round used for straining (to 1 1/2 in., for example) and/or wrapping the specimens about the round twice, with opposite faces in contact with the round, before flattening. Usually the strain treatments described are not severe enough to produce nucleation in coarse grain high-purity aluminum. The growth of grains occurs by strain-induced grain-boundary migration. It has been observed that the grain boundaries move most readily during the first hour or so of each annealing treatment and that the rate of movement decreases with extended holding times at temperature. Prolonged annealing treatments are therefore not usually beneficial. Similarly, the rate of growth of each crystal appears to depend upon the orientation of the crystal with relation to those of its neighbors. Frequently island grains are formed after the initial heat treatment as the result of slow grain-boundary migration. These sometime become stationary during later heat treatments. Twin orientation interfaces are frequently developed during annealing. These imperfections can usually be removed by increasing the severity of strain to produce actual nucleation of new grains of more favorable orientation at the imperfection interfaces. The largest single crystals produced in our laboratory by the above method measured 4 by 1 by 0.050 in. Examination of Laue back-reflection patterns from a limited area of the specimens, gave no evidence of polygonization. Probably there is some indication of polygonization in the original grain area provided a more sensitive technique is used for detection. Experiments to produce wider specimens were less successful, possibly because wider sheets increase the complexity of the strains induced by deformation and promote widespread nucleation. Grain boundary migration occurs preferentially in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the specimen. The choice of specimen geometry with respect to the rolling direction of the sheet appears to be immaterial in regard to the production of single crystals.

It has been generally believed that fracture originates at a point and, if the stress is suficient, propagates across the material from this point. Evidence to the contrary is given in Fig 1. This micrograph shows an area close to the fracture of a steel containing The material had been quenched from 1675°F and tempered at 1150°F as a round about 10 in, in diam, and had a static tensile strength of 132,000 psi and a static yield strength of 105,000 psi. The steel was broken in 3000 cycles of reversed bending at a nominal max. fiber stress of 110,000 psi at a speed of 10,000 rpm. It was in the form of a standard R.R. Moore specimen with 45" V-notch, 0.015 in. radius and 0.220 in. diam at base of notch. The fractured edge in Fig 1 is part of the central portion of the specimen which broke during the final sudden fracture. Attention is directed to the short cracks which appear as dark lines within the specimen. Similar cracks were found in another specimen of the material, broken in 1,798,000 cycles at a nominal stress of 40,000 psi. The cracks were found in several areas close to the path of the final sudden fracture. This final fracture appeared microscopically to be wholly brittle and transcrystalline. Closer to the surface of the specimens, near the path of progressive fracture, which presumably advanced gradually during many cycles, there was microscopic evidence of some local deformation, but no microcracks. Neither were microcracks observed in areas distant from the main fracture path. The following explanation is offered: In the sudden fracture of the specimen, a crack propagates along a crystallo-graphic plane, with little or no plastic deformation of the adjacent material, until it reaches a grain boundary or a particle of carbide or inclusion which stops its advance. (The particle or boundary may be outside the plane of polish and not visible in the micrograph.) A stress concentration occurs about the end of the stopped crack. One or more new cracks are likely to start in the zone of this stress concentration. They may lie in the same grain as the first crack or in an adjacent grain. New cracks may occasionally start in a nearby but not adjacent grain whose orientation with respect to the stress leads to more ready fracture than does that of the grain between. Once started, these cracks propagate along crystallographic planes in their grains and the process repeats. This leads to discontinuous, branching chains of microcracks. As the process continues, microcracks probably tend to link up by fracture of intermediate material under the influence of increasing stress concentration. Occasionally, too, there may be a series of nearby grains of similar orientation so that there is a certain continuity of fracture across them. In either case the effective size of a crack is increased, resulting in greater stress concentration at its ends and a greater likelihood of further increase of size of the continuously-fractured region. When one continuous crack crosses the entire specimen, macroscopic fracture has occurred. The fractured edge of the specimen in Fig 1 represents a series of microcracks which became continuous across the entire specimen. The short, dark-appearing cracks in the figure did not become continuous over a large area. The row of microscopic stress concentrations at their ends may link up with those of the "main crack" outside the plane of polish. The above explanation does not imply that microcracks develop at the same rate in all portions of the specimen. They will develop most rapidly where the macroscopic tensile stress and macroscopic stress concentration are greatest. Viewed on a scale large compared to the grains, the fracture would appear to progress continuously across the specimen. Although Fig 1 shows a specimen broken in a fatigue test, it is believed that the microcracks discussed do not depend on the repetitive nature of the stressing used, since they are in the region where "sudden" fracture occurred, presumably in a single stress cycle. The whole process of microcrack propagation outlined above is thought to have occurred during this single cycle. It is believed that discontinuous crack propagation may be universal in brittle transgranular fracture of crystalline solids. Further experiments are under way.

INTRODUCTION Chevron's Uranium Mill is located near Panna Maria, Texas; 70 miles southeast of San Antonio. Designed by Kaiser Engineering, the Mill will process a nominal 2500 dry T.P.D. of uranium bearing ore containing 15% uncombined moisture. Earl Torgerson, San Mateo, California, is the consulting metallurgist on process design. Feed to the plant consists of a mixture of high, medium and low grade sandy day ore; the average grade of the ore will be 0.7% throughout the life of the project. The ore is delivered to the mill via truck and stored by type in individual piles on a flat storage area. The ore is fed by conveyor to a semi-autogenous grinding mill. The SAG mill discharge slurry is pumped either to a storage tank or to the first of five mechanically agitated leach tanks where both H2SO and NaC103 are added. Following leaching, the slurry is mixed with thickener No. 2 overflow before being pumped to a six-thickener, countercurrent decantation circuit where the solution containing uranium is separated from the leach residue. The residue is washed essentially free of solubilized U308 values at the sixth thickener and discharged to an adjacent tailings pond. The first thickener overflow, containing approximately 0.4 grams U308 per liter, is filtered for clarification and sent to the liquid ion exchange (solvent extraction) section. The pregnant aqueous solution is mixed with organic solvent containing amine on which the complex uranyl sulfate ions are absorbed. The immiscible aqueous and organic solutions are mixed and separated in each of the four stages of solvent extraction. The final pregnant organic is directed to a stripping section. A strip solution containing (NH4)2S04 (ammonium sulfate) and NH4C1 (ammonium chloride) is contacted and separated from the organic in each of the four mixer-settler units. The strip solution is mixed with NH3 and the uranium precipitates along with trace amounts of sulfate, chloride, and ammonia. After washing in a thickener, the uranium precipitate or yellowcake is centrifuged and dried in a multiple hearth roaster. Overflow from the yellowcake thickener is recycled back to the stripping section of the solvent extraction circuit. The dried yellowcake concentrate contains more than 98% U308; diluents include H20, ammonia, chloride, etc.. Impurity concentratons in the product are sufficiently low, after drying, to permit direct shipment to refinement installations. ORE RECEIVING Ore from one or more mines will be stored on a pad adjacent to the uranium processing mill. Ore stored in the area may total 200,000 tons or more, which is equivalent to over a two month treatment reserve for the mill. In addition to providing surge capacity, the proposed storage facility permits natural oxidation of the ore and affords an area which, in turn, improve plant U308 recovery and reduces consumption of oxidizing reagents. The uranium bearing ore is segregated at the storage area into several distinct types. One group can be identified by its sandy, clay-like matrix and will be distinguished by its U308 concentration of high, medium, or low. Other ores contain substantial quantities of carbonaceous shale, typical of ore in the area. Feed is recovered from any one or combination of piles, in accordance with operating requirements and recovery factors. The run-of-mine ore, at 15% moisture, is transferred to a stationary, 24-inch by 24-inch grizzly. Undersize material falls into a 280-ton surge hopper located below grade, while oversize material is removed for preliminary size reduction. A sump-pump is located at the reclaim hopper to recover excess mositure and ore spillage for processing. Plant feed is continuously drawn from beneath the hopper at an average rate of 120 tons per hour by means of an apron feeder. The hopper is equipped with a low level safety system to protect the apron feeder assemble. The ore is transferred to a belt conveyor, elevated and discharged into a semi-autogeneous grinding (SAG) mill. Water addition at the discharge point is automatically controlled by a feed rate, moisture analyzer system located on the belt conveyor. GRINDING Minus 24-inch ore, at a rate of 120 mosit tons per hour and cyclone underflow at a rate of 137 moist tons per hour are combined with a controlled 186 gallons per minute fresh, warm plant process water. The mixture, at an average 68% solids, is fed to the SAG mill. The viscous mass is subjected to grinding at a temperature moderately above ambient resulting from use of the 140ºF well water. The 16.5'x5.0' Marcy Mill is driven by a 500 H.P. A.C. Motor. The mill will rotate at 73.4% of critical speed or 14.06 R.P.M. Eight percent of the mill's volume will be occupied by steel grinding balls; 22% by pulp. The mill is designed to rotate in either direction, in order to obtain maximum lifter and liner life. The SAG mill is equipped with a trommel having ½ -inch slots for removal of oversize material at its discharge and the large or oversize material is collected and either recirculated periodically or discarded. The undersize slurry is diluted to 64% solids with the addition of hot well water or mine water to the mill discharge sump. The flow is automatically controlled utilizing data from a gamma density meter. The slurry from the mill discharge sump is pumped to hydrocyclones to classify the particles. Underflow from the cyclones, at 80% + 28 mesh, is recycled to

LITERATURE data1'3 have suggested that the resolved shear stress necessary to initiate slip in a particular slip system in tungsten single crystals is strongly dependent on the tensile orientation of the crystals. This orientation dependence is contrary to the critical resolved shear stress criterion. Because the Schmid factors for slip on particular {110}( I l l), {112}(Ill), or {123}(111) slip systems in a (100) oriented tungsten crystal are virtually identical to the respective Schmid factors for a (110) oriented crystal, slip should initiate on the same system in both orientations, independent of the values of the critical resolved shear stresses. Thus, it would be expected that, for a critical resolved shear stress model to hold, the proportional-limit stress for these two orientations must be similar. The expectation of similar proportional -limit stresses has not been borne out by reported experimental observations. Rose et nl.' reported that the proportional-limit stress for crystals near the (110) orientation was 92,000 psi, approximately three times that of (100) oriented crystals (31,000 psi). Garlick and probst2 reported greater than a fourfold difference. Most recently, Beardmore and ~ull~ examined tungsten crystals with orientations along the edge of the standard stereographic triangle and showed a gradual increase in proportional-limit stress from 28,000 psi for the (100) orientation to 93,000 psi for the (110) orientation. Again, the difference was more than threefold. As has been emphasized by these investigators, the apparent gross variation of proportional-limit stress with orientation precludes any meaningful analysis of slip mechanics using a simple critical resolved shear stress relation. The purpose of the present communication is to report that, by use of refined strain-measuring techniques, the proportional-limit stresses for the (100) and (110) orientations are quite similar. Obviously, to determine accurately the value of the proportional-limit stress, which is by definition the stress at which nonlinear stress-strain behavior first occurs, the method of measuring strain must be capable of high accuracy. The investigators cited used as the measured elongation the crosshead displacement of the tensile machine. This method, however, introduces extraneous strain contributions from the load train. Because these extraneous contributions are considerable in the initial portions of loading (as has been well-documented in the literature) the proportional-limit stress measurement, dependent on the deviation of a line from linearity, can be significantly affected. During the course of a recent study, room-temperature strain was measured directly on several (100)-and (110)-oriented tensile specimens axially oriented within 5 deg of the desired direction. Each specimen was fitted with two foil strain gages mounted on opposite sides of the 0.08-in.-diam reduced section. The tensile specimens were loaded at a crosshead speed of 0.01 in. per min on an Instron Universal Testing Machine. Strain was monitored through an external bridge circuit in which the specimen strain gages comprised two arms. The bridge output was recorded against the applied load. A strain of 2 x 10"" could be readily detected by this method. Some specimens were subjected to conventional loading while the load for others was cycled between zero and continually increasing values until the first deviation from linearity was observed. The results of these methods were similar, and the stress at which nonlinear behavior occurred was considered the proportional-limit stress. The proportional-limit stresses measured in this study are approximately 5000 and 6500 psi for the ( 100) - and ( 110) -oriented crystals, respectively, a range of values almost a magnitude less than those reported previously. Representative curves are presented in Fig. 1. Because of the nature of the measurements made, the point of departure of a line from linearity is often debatable. While the load-strain curve for the (100) -oriented crystals made a relatively abrupt deviation from linearity, the curve for the (110) -oriented crystal was more gradual, so that the actual point of tangency may be at a lower load than reported. IN experiments on tantalum strained in tension, Bechtold did not observe deformation-twinning even at a temperature as low as that of liquid air.' This is an unexpected behavior for a metal of body-centered-cubic structure. Therefore, it is desirable to determine whether the lack of twinning is an inherent characteristic of this particular metal, or whether the reluctance to twin can be overcome under suitable conditions. The following experiments were performed under conditions favorable to twinning and cleavage in their competition with slip, namely, with impact loading on large-grained sheet at low temperatures. The crystallography of cleavage in tantalum sheet was also investigated carefully because of the remarkable ductility of tantalum at low temperatures and because recent tests on oxygen-embrittled tantalum had disclosed unusual cleavage behavior for a metal of this structure: cleavage primarily on (110) planes and only occasionally on {100}.2 The tantalum, supplied by Fansteel, was of 99.9 pet purity, with the chief impurities being iron (0.03 pet) and carbon (0.03 pet). Coarse grains were produced by the strain-anneal method, the anneal being 4 hr at 2000°C in a vacuum of 10-3 mm Hg, followed by furnace cooling. Impact deformation was applied in various ways: a) by hammer blows on an anvil, the specimen and anvil being immersed in liquid nitrogen ( —196°C), b) by driving a precooled center-punch into the sheet, and c) by bending around a crystallographically determined axis with a hammer blow. The impact-deformation produced bands and slip lines on the surface, Fig. 1. The bands have every appearance of being deformation twins, a) They are tilted with respect to the untwinned surface. b) They have the appearance of Neumann bands in iron, thin lens shape, some having serrated edges. c) The orientation in each is different from that of the surrounding matrix and uniform within a given band, see slip lines within them in Fig. 1. d) Upon repolishing and etching, the difference in orientation and the resemblance to Neumann bands is again evident, Fig. 2. (In this micrograph the slight bend in the bands as they cross grain boundaries was noted frequently and results from the high degree of preferred orientation in the sheet.) e) The bands persist after annealing treatments that would have removed them had they been a low-temperature martensitic phase, e.g., after an anneal of 1/2 hr at 900°C. When back-reflection Laue data were plotted for single-surface analysis of several grains, every trace of the bands in each grain could be explained by (112) planes. In addition, two of the bands were located in space by traces on two surfaces, and these also were found to lie on (112) planes within the error of the stereographic plot. Since (1 12) is the anticipated composition plane for deformation twins in body-centered-cubic metals it is felt that the observations listed above are conclusive evidence for the identification of the bands as twins. Similar tests with impact at —77° and at 25°C produced no twinning. It is concluded that the critical shear stress for slip at the rates of straining used was always low enough to prevent the applied stress from reaching the value required for twinning at these temperatures. It was noted that the serrations along the edges of the twin bands exhibited parallel crystal facets. Several similarly oriented notches are visible in Fig. 1, and a remarkable set is shown in Fig. 3. It appears from Fig. 1 and similar areas that notches are frequently associated with the intersection of a slip line with a twin, although not all such intersections are at notches. In some instances a slip line appears to enter the twin, cross it, reflect from the opposite side and recross it, producing a pattern resembling a notch but without producing the notch itself, see Fig. 1. It is suggested that the stress concentration at the end of a slip line is responsible for these details. The strain energy associated with the pile-up of dislocations at a twin boundary may be lessened by untwin-ning or failing to twin a portion of the twin band, or

Eight binary iron alloys were examined after ion nitriding experiments to determine the behavior of the following elements: Al, Mo, Mn, Si, Ti, V,Cr, and C. Only Al, Cr, Ti, and V additions caused hardening in binary iron alloys. A few steels were examined to see the effect of Cr, Cr + Al, Cr + Ti, and Cr + V. It is suggested that a useful new class of ni-triding grade steels might be those containing about I pct V. The nitriding of steel, first described by Fry1 about 45 years ago, rapidly attained commercial application with very little knowledge of the fundamentals involved. While Fry,' in describing the status of nitriding in 1932, apparently correctly postulated hardening by precipitated nitrides, the details of the nitriding process were not understood, nor has the situation changed much since that time. It is also interesting to note that the compositions of some typical nitriding steels given by Fry at that time have changed little in the intervening years. Currently used nitriding steels owe their surface hardening to either chromium (as in 4340 steel) or aluminum plus chromium as in the Nitralloy grades, where both CrN and AlN appear to contribute to harden ing. Titanium additions have been studied experimentally, but thus far titanium steels have not won wide commercial acceptance. This subject will be expanded later. The orthodox ammonia nitriding process has been reviewed very adequately many times as in Jenkins3 and Case and VanHorn,4 and their is no need to outline the process here. Ion nitriding is not as well-known, although there have been several descriptions5-9 of the process given, sometimes with comparisons with the ammonia process. Most of these papers are primarily concerned with a description of the equipment, or of the physics or electrical engineering aspects of ion nitriding, but Noren and Kindbom9 gave the results of a metallurgical investigation using both processes. In brief, ion nitriding is carried out in a vacuum chamber from which the air is exhausted and replaced by a N2-H2 mixture, typically containing 10 to 20 pct N2, at about 5 to 10 torr pressure. While ammonia gas has also been used in ion nitriding, there is no evidence that ammonia makes any improvement in the ion nitriding process. A few hundred volts dc is applied between the grounded container wall (positive) and an insulated center post supporting the work (negative) to be nitrided. A glow discharge is created in the ionized gas, accelerating positive nitrogen ions to the work. These ions contain enough energy to form the normally unstable Fe4N "white layer", thus establish- ing surface nitrogen solubility characteristic of the a Fe/Fe4N equilibrium. This creates a substantial concentration gradient, driving dissolved nitrogen into the steel. The temperature employed is in the same range (around 500" to 550°C) as in ammonia nitriding, but because of factors which are not understood at present the nitriding time is ordinarily considerably reduced in ion nitriding. Other advantages have been cited,9 but it is not the purpose of the present work to contrast the two processes. The present objective was to examine the behavior of binary iron alloys during ion nitriding with respect to the microstructure, hardness level, and depth, and to examine some of these factors in steels as well. In this way it was hoped to be able to find out something about the individual role of these elements in steels. While all the work was done by ion nitriding, there seems to be no reason why any conclusions reached would not equally apply to ammonia nitriding, excepting only the kinetic aspects of the process. Another objective was an exploration of the critical-ity of the ion nitriding variables: gas composition, pressure, temperature, and time. EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS The equipment used was substantially as described by Jones and Martin.8 The vacuum tank was about 12 in. in diam by about 18 in. high, and consisted of water-cooled stainless steel, with a single small window at the top for viewing inside. This sat on a heavy mild steel base equipped with the main pumping port, pressure control port, and vacuum gaging. A series of variable resistances was interposed between the glow discharge and a large-capacity -40 amp variable primary transformer feeding a 1000-v transformer, but 600 v were about the maximum ordinarily used. With the small l-in.-round, 4-in.-thick discs used for nitriding, the electrical load was usually about 500 v at 0.8 amp. The specimen temperature was controlled by a stainless-steel sheathed chromel-alumel couple, whose junction was in the steel stool upon which the flat discs were placed. These were ground through 400 Sic paper. Cycling of the temperature controller caused -0.2 amp variation in ion current, providing an ample control band. The binary iron alloys were made from vacuum-melted hydrogen-deoxidized electrolytic iron and alloys of 99.9 pct purity. Cast ll-lb-square tapered ingots were forged and hot-rolled to about 11/4-in.-diam rounds. Discs of 1/4 in. thickness by about 1 in. diam were machined from the rods for nitriding specimens. The following alloys were prepared: 1 pct each of Mn, Mo, Cr, Ti, Al, V, Si, and an Fe-0.8 pct C alloy. EXPERIMENTAL VARIABLES Of the variables total gas pressure, nitrogen partial pressure, temperature, and time, only nitrogen partial pressure was found to be critical to the operation. The stabilization of the R, a-Mn, and 0-Mn phases have been studied in the Mn-Ti-Fe and Mn-Ti-Co systems. Iron and cobalt both appear to stabilize the (Mn-Ti) R phase to almost the sarne extent. The R-phase region was found to extend from the lowest e/a to slightly beyond the maximunz e/a limit known for this phase. But, while iron appears to stabilize the a-Mn phase, cobalt tends to stabilize the p-Mn phase. In the two systems manganese appears to get replaced by iron and cobalt in each of the mentioned phases. The instability of the a-Mn phase in the Mn-Ti-Co system and the /3 -Mn phase in the Mn-Ti-Fe system cannot be explained on the basis of adverse size effects because atomic diameters for both iron and cobalt (C.N. 12 at. diam) are ziery similnr and not much different from manganese which they replace. Qualitatively, the reason for the stability of the a-Mn and the p-Mn phases can be traced to the more favorable e/a ratio prevailing in the respective systems and to a competing tendency between the two phases. In transition metal alloy systems the o, p,P, R, a- Mn,' and p-Mn2 phases have been claimed as electron compounds. A large volume of work has been done to establish the criterion for the formation of the o phase but until very recently practically no systematic work was done on the a-Mn and the /3-Mn phases. A recent investigation on the P-Mn phase3 indicates the e/a criterion for p-Mn phase stabilization. Since the R phase was first known to appear only in certain ternary systems1 no detailed work was then possible for this phase. The R phase has been recently discovered as a binary intermetallic compound in the Mn-Ti~ and Mn-si~-' binary systems. The existence of binary R phases opens up the possibilities of studying the effect of alloying elements on the stabilization of the R phase. Of the two binary systems possessing an R phase, the Mn-Ti system appears to be more interesting because at a suitable high temperature it is possible to find the three electron compounds, the a-Mn, p-Mn, and R phases, side by side and it is possible to study the effect of a third transition element on these three electron compounds. For the present investigation iron and cobalt, so called B elements for the formation of electron compounds, have been used as the third element to study the stabilization of the a-Mn, P-Mn, and R phases. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared by using 99.9 pct pure electrolytic Fe and Mn, 99.5 pct Co, and crystal bar titanium, supplied by Semi Elements Inc., New York and Gallard Schelsinger Mfg. Co., New York. Weighed amounts of the components were melted in recrystal-lized alumina crucibles in an inert atmosphere (argon) high-frequency induction melting unit. Titanium was made into fine chips for easy dissolution and a special charging procedure was adopted to avoid contacts of titanium chips with the alumina crucibles. Up to 20 at. pct Ti, the maximum titanium content in the investigated alloys, there was no visible sign of reaction of titanium with the alumina crucibles. With a careful control of melting time and temperature the losses were minimized and were always found to be below 0.1 pct. Because of such small and almost constant weight losses, the alloys were not finally analyzed. The alloys were wrapped in molybdenum foil and annealed in evacuated and sealed silica capsules at 1000" * 2°C for 72 hr and subsequently quenched in cold tap water. Annealed samples were examined metallographically and by X-ray diffraction. For all high manganese alloys oxalic acid solutions of various concentrations and 1.0 pct HN03 solution were found suitable as etching reagents. Best contrast between the a-Mn and the R phases could be obtained by using freshly prepared 60 pct glycerine + 20 pct HN03 + 20 pct HF solution. For high iron and cobalt containing alloys, especially for alloys containing the a-Fe, y-Fe, and P-Co phases, 15 cc HNOJ + 60 cc HC1 + 15 cc acetic acid + 15 cc water solution was found to be the best etching reagent. All X-ray diffraction work was carried out (using specimens prepared from annealed powders) with a 114.6 mm diam Debye-Scherrer camera using unfiltered FeK radiation at 25 kv and 10 ma. All calculations for X-ray diffraction work were carried out using an IBM 7044 digital computer RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The two ternary systems, MnTiFe and MnTiCo, were investigated near the manganese rich end, Figs. 1 and 2, and show some common features. In both alloy systems large extensions of narrow R phase regions occur at almost constant titanium contents. At titanium contents higher than that of the single phase R-phase alloys, the same unidentified X phase was found in both ternary systems. The extensions of the X phase close to the Mn-Ti binary indicate that this phase could be the TiMns phase. Too few X phase diffraction lines were present in the diffraction patterns to make positive identification of the X phase. In contrast to this similarity the two systems show opposite behavior in the extensions of the a-Mn and 8-Mn phase regions; while iron tends to stabilize the a-Mn phase, cobalt

TROMP*—In dealing with the question of the most suitable kind of solid media for heavy density suspension processes Walker and Allen point out that the particle size of the solid media should not be taken too fine, as the viscosity increases with the area of the solid media and a low viscosity is essential lor high tonnage and accurate separation. A coarser particle size of the solid media will, in their opinion, of necessity give rise to a differential density in the bath (higher gravity at the bottom of the bath than at the top) but they advocate acceptance of the differential density rather than a higher viscosity. Though I fully agree with the choice the authors have made, I cannot subscribe to their view that only by accepting a differential density in the bath a coarse particle size of the solid media can be used. There certainly is another alternative: stronger agitation. Applying sufficiently strong vertical currents, a uniform gravity can be obtained quite well in a suspension of a coarse solid media. Of course, this is not a very attractive solution, for it means a degradation of the true gravity separation and a step backwards to hydraulic classification, which makes the washing dependent on size and shape of the particles. However, to a greater or lesser extent, this is what actually takes place in all the heavy density suspension processes relying on a uniform gravity in the bath. The so-called "stable" suspension processes make no exception. They all "stabilize" their suspensions by introducing or creating vertical currents, be it upwards or downwards or both, be it by hydraulic or by mechanical means. In fact, there is no such thing as a "stable" suspension in gravity separation, as the very reason for the use of suspensions in this field is the property that the solid media is able to settle and so facilitate the recovery. I have been enlarging on this point because the characteristics of the various processes can only be well understood and viewed from the same angle (from Bar-voys up to Chance) when the fact is recognized that mechanical or hydraulic agitation is a condition sine qua non for obtaining a uniform density from top to bottom in a suspension. Is a Cone-slraped Vessel Essenlial? Of the two alternatives for getting a low viscosity Walker and Allen have preferred correctly the sacrifice of uniform gravity in the bath instead of increasing further their vertical current arid agitation. The resulting differential density of the bath brings the problem of bow to prevent accumulation of intermediate gravity products in the bath, an accumulation which, if not prevented, would ultimately plug their cone. According to the authors an open-top cone combined with a downdraft current of the bath liquid would he the only suitable way to cope with such suspensions and they assume as a fact that "in any vessel other than a cone, such a differential density could not be tolerated." My experience is quilt: different. In my process, which has been in successful operation for more than a decade, differ-ential density of the suspension is applied ranging from values below 0.1 up to differentials above 0.5, according to the prevailing requirements of the individual plant. In this process, which is charac-terized by the use of horizontal currents in a suspension of differential density, the form of the vessel is of secondary importance and different types are in operation. It so happens that none of these are in the, form of a cone. The fact that 24 washboxes on my process have been installed and 12 others are under construction may constitute sufficient proof against the opinion that only a cone-shaped separator would be suited for differential density separation. Horizontal Currents in Differentia1 Den-sity Sepparation I myself have some doubts as to the suitability of a cone with downdraft for dealing with differential density (or, for that matter, any other washbox relying on vertical currents for removing the intermediate gravity products). It ap-pears to me that it is restricted to feed of small size only and even then with watch-fulness. If we take, for example, a piece of 2 in., the draft necessary to pull such a piece down to a zone wherein the den-sity of the suspension is, say, 0.03 higher, is quite considerable. For a suspension of, say, 1.6 sp gr the downdraft will have to be in the region of 3 in. per second. Unfortunately. most of the differential in density is in the part immediately below the reach of the top current which transports the floats. Consequently, we need the downdraft where we like it least: in the upper part of the cone. This entails the risk that light float particles are carried away with the downward current. This current of, say again, 3 in. per second would carry particles up to 1.3 sp gr and 3/8 in. size into the 1.6 gravity zone. This is prohibitive. It is also prohibitive because a downdraft of 3 in. per second in the upper part of the cone would require a tremendous circulation of medium. IIalf way up a 20 ft diam cone, a downdraft of 3 in. per second would correspond with 8500 gpm. With the downward current following the way of least resistance, the strength of the downdraft will not be exactly the same at different places of a cross area. If, as I anticipate, the center of the cone is favored, the strength of the downdraft will fall below the critical value near the

THE Hercules mine is located in the northeastern section of the Coeur d'Alene district, approximately 1 1/2 miles north of the town of Burke, Idaho. Surface indications of the ore deposit were first discovered in 1886, but regular mine production was not started until 1902 and was continuous until April 1925, when the known ore had been extracted. Incomplete records show that from 1912 until operations were suspended the mine produced 2 1/2 million tons of ore containing 9.4 pct lead and 7.7 oz of silver per ton, together with an estimated 2 pct zinc, 0.3 pct copper, and 20 pct iron. This operation was the first in. a series of mining enterprises culminating in October 1947 with the consolidation of Day Mines, Inc. In the same year it was decided to unwater the levels below the collar of the Hercules shaft in the hope of finding some indication of a recurrence of ore. The unwatering operation has been described in a. previous paper.' The initial exploration, following recapture of the workings, showed sufficient promise to warrant a detailed study of the mineralogy with modern techniques. The general geo1ogy of the Coeur d'Alene district, including a detailed description of the rock types encountered, has been comprehensively treated by Ransome and Calkins' in their classic paper, and only local background description, therefore, is felt to be appropriate here. The Hercules deposit transects a portion of the trough of a broad south-trending synclinorium which has been greatly complicated by faulting. More locally, it lies within a block of ground bounded on the east; by the O'Neil Gulch fault, a steep north-south overthrust of considerable magnitude, and on the west by a monzonite stock, the outcrop of which is 1/2 mile or more wide and 5 miles long. The country rock is composed of thin to medium-bedded argillites and argillaceous quartz-ites of the Prichard and Burke formations, the oldest members of the Pre-cambrian Belt Series of sediments in the area, believed to be of Algonkian age. The contact between them is a conformable gradation. The argillite is colored gray to tannish-gray and is fine-grained, compact, and generally massive in structure. Under the microscope the unaltered argillite is seen to be composed principally of anhedral quartz and a few feldspar grains which were at one time presumably partly rounded sand grains, but as a result of recrystallization and cementation by silica, the interstices are now almost obliterated and quartz grains show crenulate boundaries. The sizes of these crystals vary from 0.5 mm down to 0.1 mm in greatest dimension. In all specimens sericite comprises 10 to 20 pct of the rock and is present abundantly between most of the grains as flakes or shreds which vary considerably in size. Sometimes they form a fine felt-like mat or aggregate, and sometimes flakes are seen which appear to be good muscovite. In some specimens, separated rhombic-shaped carbonate grains are abundant, and in some instances these have been changed to sericite. Mining operations to date have explored the Hercules vein to a maximum vertical depth of 3600 ft below its outcrop, and along a maximum strike-length of 3600 ft on certain of the lower mine levels. The main orebody is irregular in outline, extending over a variable strike-length of 400 to 1500 ft; and it is intersected by a strong transverse fault that has been traced from the surface to the bottom level. This has been named the Hercules fault, and apart from the vein itself, it is the most prominent structural feature in the mine. There is good evidence that it existed prior to the introduction of ore solutions and may have influenced ore deposition, but it was also the locus of important post-ore displacement and shows a progressive right-handed horizontal component reaching 200 ft on the deeper levels. Its vertical component is not definitely known but may be considerably greater. The fault strikes 20° N to 50° E and dips westerly at angles of 70" to 45", flattening in dip where it crosses the original orebody from east to west between 1000 and 1600 ft below the surface. At about 3000 ft in depth the Hercules fault is joined by a vertical fault of similar strike, and the major post-ore dis-placement below their junction is taken up along this vertical branch of the structure, now called the Mercury fault. Recent work has been concentrated in this vicinity. Another structural feature of special geologic interest, though of little economic importance, is the occurrence of a porphyritic dike in this area. This lies a short distance above the Hercules fault, essentially parallel to it, and is 5 to 15 ft in thickness. It appears at first glance to cut the mineralization, suggesting push-apart relationship, but small stringers of the vein minerals have been observed to penetrate the dike for a matter of inches at several points. The dike is thought to be related to the monzonite intrusion. A vertical longitudinal projection of the mine is shown in Fig. 1, which illustrates most of the features discussed above. The Hercules vein was deposited along the course of a strong, persistent shear zone that now appears as a braided network of gouge seams running through more or less crushed and shattered country rock. It strikes 70° N to 80° W and dips southerly at an average of 75". Barren parts of the structure vary in width from less than 1 ft to more than 15 ft. The width of mineralized segments may be double that. Although the evidence is not conclusive, pre-mineral, normal movement along the zone may be 1000 or 1500 ft. The horizontal component is unknown. INTRODUCTION Union Carbide is currently operating an in-situ leach project on the Palangana Dome area in Duval county. This deposit meets all the requirements for in-situ leach in that the ore (1) is below the water table, (2) is in a permeable horizon, (3) is amenable to chemical leaching, and (4) is confined by impervious layers. This project has been under commercial production since 1976, and its capacity has been expanded on three occasions since going on-stream. Recently, additional uranium reserves were discovered on the Rogers-Cardenas (R-C) property about 32 km north of the Palangana operation. The ore is located within the Oakville sands and its characteristics are quite similar to those of the ore at Palangana. Both are an unconsolidated Arkosic sand high in clay and calcium carbonate. The R-C ore, however, is somewhat coarser with a mean particle size of 0.15 mm as compared to a mean particle size of 0.07 mm for the Palangana ore. In all respects it would appear that this ore would be a candidate for in-situ leach as a satellite operation to Palangana. Unfortunately, R-C ore is above the water table and, therefore, not amenable to the Palangana practice. Because of the limited known reserves in this deposit, it is readily apparent that conventional mining and milling are out of the question. However, because of its proximity to our Palangana operation, it seemed worthwhile to consider other options. The most viable route based on our past experience was to heap leach the ore. Our recent success at our Gas Hills facility and our Maybell operation, in employing a heap leach practice to our marginal reserves seemed to be a logical approach for processing this ore. Our experiences at both locations are described in "Heap Leaching - A Case History" by R. G. Woolery et al., Mining Engineering, March 1978. In both instances the process is an acid leach circuit and acid consumption averages 20 kg/t H2SO4. A preliminary feasibility study showed that because of the high strip ratio required for the R-C project to be successful, additional ore reserves must be located and that a method of heap leaching with an alkaline circuit would have to be developed. As a result of this paper study, the decision was made to proceed with a program of additional exploration drilling to determine the total ore reserves that could be mined economically. The Mining Department will evaluate each ore zone for cutoff grade, strip ratio, and expected mining cost. At the same time, a laboratory program to evaluate the available core samples for amenability to heap leaching with respect to an estimate of uranium recovery and processing costs was developed. This program is currently in progress, and at this time, we are just completing our process amenability study. BENCH-SCALE EVALUATION OF THE R-C ORE The initial bench-scale slurry leach tests on the R-C ore showed an acid consumption in excess of 200 kg/t H2SO4. These data, of course, discouraged us from considering this process route. Not only would the acid cost be prohibitive, but the gypsum generated by the reaction of the sulfuric acid with the calcium carbonate of the ore would severely effect the percolation of the lixivant. For this reason, the laboratory program was directed toward an alkaline circuit compatible with heap leaching. Because of the proximity of the R-C property to our Palangana operation, it seemed advisable to integrate the processing of this ore into the production at Palangana. Doing so would enable us to bring the R-C property into production by merely enlarging our present facilities at Palangana; otherwise, construction of a grass roots plant would be necessary. Ideally, the simplest method would be to construct the heaps at Palangana and employ an ammonium carbonate/bicarbonate leachant compatible with the in-situ production liquor. The product liquors could then be co-mingled or processed separately as desired. To determine if this goal was practical, samples of the R-C ore were obtained, and a laboratory program initiated. Heap leach amenability testing consisted of preliminary bench-scale evaluation to determine optimum solution strength and ultimate uranium recovery, followed by small column tests to confirm the bench-scale metallurgy and to determine percolation characteristics. These bench-scale tests are being followed by pilot-scale testing approximating field conditions. As expected, the bench-scale tests showed that the dissolution rate is considerably slower for alkaline leach than has been our experience in acid leaching. Because of the slower reaction rates, product liquor grades will be lower than for acid, as greater volumes of solution are required for satisfactory uranium extractions. The greatest influence on reaction times found in the laboratory was the carbonate/bicarbonate strength and oxidant addition. However, the higher salt concentration reduced the efficiency of the IX resin circuit and about 25g/L salt proved to an upper limit compatible with subsequent IX treatment. The oxidant contributed significantly to the early extraction rate but seemed to have only minimal effect on the total practical U308 extracted or the time required to achieve it. This variable will require larger scale testing to determine if the added cost of the oxidant is actually justifiable. Thus, the small-scale laboratory slurry tests, based on the 0.088% U308 sample available, indicate that leaching at 25g/L ammonium carbonate/bicarbonate, with or without oxidant, we might expect an 80-85% U308 extraction on this ore.

An approximate phase diagram has been developed for the CaF2-CaC2 system, indicating a eutectic point at 1240°C, Ncac2 = 0.13, and no detectable solid solution in either phase. The liquidus line is shown to correspond to a simple c22- ion in solution. A thermo-chemical study of&apos; the reaction between carbon-saturated Ni-Ca alloys and CaC2-CaF2 liquids indicates that lhe Raoullian activity coefficient of CaC2 in dilute solution in Cap2 al 1500°C lies between 8 and 10. Some effects of the stabilily of Cap2-CaC2 solutions at high temperatures on electroslag remelting praclice are outlined. THE alkaline earth acetylides. MIIC2, have a reasonably high thermochemical stability at high temperature in the solid state,&apos; with the exception of magnesium, which forms an unstable acetylide at low temperatures (-500°C) and a carbide, Mg2C3, in the range 700&apos; to 1000°C. The acetylides of calcium and barium have been shown to have limited solubility in their respective chlorides,&apos; and further these solutions contain the acetylide as a C: ion.&apos; The equivalent magnesium solutions have not been studied. Although calcium "carbide" is used as a desulfuriz-ing reagent in steelmaking. and is possibly present as an acetylide-oxide phase in very basic electric arc practice slags, the acetylide ion appears to be substantially unstable in a silicate slag.* As a conse- *This instability arises from equilibria in the reaction: CaC2 + CO = (Ca0) + 3C where the low intrinsic solubility of CaC2 in silicate lattice, and the low activity of CaO in a silicate solution where CaO/Si02 < 1, combine to give a very small equilibrium concentration of CaC2 in solution in such silicate slags at temperatures in the region of I 500°c, even under carbon-saturated conditions. Under highly basic conditions, a liquid CaO-CaC2 phase may separate from the silicate system quence of this, the possibility that reactions involving CaC2 in silicate solutions are of importance to general steelmaking practice is remote. However, in operations involving a slag primarily based on a halide, or alkaline earth oxide, we must take into account the possibility that CaC2 will appear in quantities sufficient to significantly affect both the chemical and physical properties of the slag. The work outlined below presents a study of the CaF2-CaC2 system intended to provide sufficient data to allow an estimate of the importance of this system to electroslag remelting and welding practice. However, we should indicate at this point that there will be other processes, e.g., heat treatment, flux cleaning of castings, fused salt electrolysis, and so forth, where alkaline-earth halide fluxes are in contact with carbon, graphite, or carbides, and where halide-acetylide solutions must be taken into account. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Structural Studies. In view of the difficulty ex-perienced in handling CaC2 prepared from calcium turnings and propane gas at 700°C, it was decided to use solutions prepared directly in the equilibration apparatus, Fig. 1. The starting materials were: a) Ni-Ca-C alloy, prepared by adding calcium to liquid nickel held under calcium fluoride in an induction-heated graphite crucible; b) calcium fluoride, prepared by fusing calcium fluoride powder (British Drug House "EXTRA PURE") calcium fluoride in an induction-heated graphite crucible, in air, followed by electrolysis between graphite electrodes at 1 amp cm-2 density, for 10&apos; coulombs per g CaF2. This procedure decomposes the CaO produced by hydrolysis during the fusion step, replacing it by CaC2; Ca2+ + 2e-Ca*(l) Ca*(l) + 2C(gr)-(CaC2)caF2 O2- -2e-O*(g) O*(g) +C(gr)-CO(g) This results in a composition of between 2 and 5 wt pct CaC2 in CaF2. Fifty grams (in lumps) of this material were placed in a graphite crucible, together with Ni-Ca-C alloy (averaging 20 wt pct Ca), and the equilibration apparatus assembled. The alloy reacted with the crucible at high temperature to give CaC2, which dissolved in the calcium fluoride solution to give the desired composition. Cooling curves were plotted manually for these liquids, with rapid stirring and CaF2 seeding to minimize supercooling, and using a Pt/Pt 13 Rh thermocouple calibrated on the freezing points of nickel and copper. This gave a reproducibility of ±0.l°C. and an absolute accuracy of the thermocouple of ±l°C. An example curve is shown in Fig. 2, with the CaF2 end of the binary system in Fig. 3. The CaF2-CaC2 ingots were crushed, under dry nitrogen, and sampled for chemical analysis and X-ray examination. Analytical details are given in the Appendix. Powder diffraction data indicated that the only phases present in all samples examined were calcium fluoride and tetragonal (Types I and 111) calcium acetylide,4 with no evidence of solid solutions or compound formation. 2) Thermochemical Studies. The apparatus used to obtain activity data on CaC2 in these systems is shown in Fig. 4. It consists of an arrangement whereby the graphite crucible and its contents (CaF2-CaC2. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) ATTEMPTS were made in 1908, at the Great Falls Works, to produce ingots direct from the Butte precipitate by smelting- the material in a reverberatory refining furnace. The ingots produced in this manner averaged 99.4 per cent. of copper and 0.40 per cent. of arsenic and antimony. The copper content being considered too low, it was decided to cast the copper into anodes and to treat the anodes in the electrolytic plant. No.1 Furnace, in which the precipitate was treated, was a regular cathode refining furnace previously employed in making wire bar, cake, and ingot from electrolytic cathodes. The hearth of the furnace was 24 by 12 ft., having a capacity of 100,000 lb. of cathodes. The furnace was coal fired, and the copper was dipped by means of trolley ladles.

THE purposes of this paper are (1) to show that the mineral matter content of coal is satisfactorily represented by the Parr formula; that is, Mineral matter = 1.08 Ash + 0.55 Total sulfur (2) to compare ash-to-mineral-matter ratios with factors by which ash values must be multiplied in order that dry, factor-times-ash-free values shall equal Parr unit coal values; (3) to examine such ash-correction factors and to compare them with similar factors corresponding to certain simplifications or modifications of the Parr formulas and (4) to show that ash-correction factors used for simplification in calculating approximate unit coal calorific values cannot be. correctly used for the conversion of other determined values in an analysis to the unit coal basis, but that each type of calculation requires separate treatment in simplification.

Another increase in production and the discovery of new pools arc the outstanding developments of the year 1937. Production in 1937 totaled 16,354,706 bbl., compared to 15,457,953 bbl. in the previous year, an increase of 5.8 per cent, of which 5 per cent was due to the Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales (Argentine Governnlent Oil Fields) and 0.8 per cent t,o private companies. Table I shows that the most important gain in output was obtained in zone B of Comodoro Rivadavia, partly offset by a 5.7 per cent decrease in the Neuqu6n district. The fields of Salta and Mendoza show an increase of 4.4 and 39.1 per cent, respectively. The spatial distribution of the deformation modulii around the CSM/ONWI test facility was determined using an NX version of the CSM cell. Approximately 840 modulus measurements were made in six rings (each ring containing seven holes each 6 m in length) of boreholes. These parallel rings were spaced at 2.4 m intervals along the room. Contour plots of the modulii revealed that the depth of the blast damage zone varied both with perimeter position and distance away from the opening. The maximum depth of disturbance appeared to be of the order of 60 cm. At locations removed from the opening, the variability in modulus was quite high reflecting the presence of joints, faults, shear zones and foliation. A comparison of rock mass modulii (ER) with those obtained from the laboratory testing of core (E), revealed that ER [=] 0.5 E.

In continental Europe the feldspar jig is used almost exclusively for cleaning the fine sizes of coal; it operates with an artificial bed, made up generally of pieces of feldspar or of any other hard and heavy rock with good cleavages. A primitive form of this machine requiring close supervision was used in this country years ago, but output was small. The modern machines are generally air-pulsated Baum-type jigs, with capacities up to 150 tph, and treat sizes from 3/s in. to 0, usually previously dedusted or deslimed. These jigs are equipped with very accurate and sensitive automatic controls insuring satisfactory operation even at low separating gravity and with feeds irregular in quality and quantity. This paper will deal more particularly with coal cleaning separation, but the technical studies apply equally to all minerals.
