Bill S.1431 for the creation of a Department of Natural Resources has received a propitious hearing before the Senate Committee on Government Operations. Interior Secretary Rogers C. B. Morton was one of the prominent witnesses who testified in favor. The department had been proposed, Morton said, with "the conviction that the development of all natural resources would be harmonized with the most practicable possible means to protect and preserve the environment, consistent with the social and economic needs of the Nation." Another opinion on the pro side came from Atomic Energy Commissioner Clarence E. Larson, who said that a "total picture" had become essential to the establishment of a policy for developing energy resources in the best public interest. Commissioner James T. Ramey, on the other hand, was one of the AEC dissenters. Ramey said he believed the reorganization of resource responsibilities would hinder efforts to deal with energy-environmental problems and prevent the use of AEC "expertise and facilities" to the greatest advantage. As Arnold Weber, associated director of the Office of Management and Budget, pointed out, however, retiring AEC Chairman Glenn T. Seaborg is in favor of the new department. Another supporter, and one who can cast a vote on the bill, is Sen. Frank E. Moss. Final Standards for emissions from new stationary sources will be published by the Environmental Protection Agency on October 27. The initial proposals, appearing in the Federal Register on August 17, called for limiting emissions per million Btu of heat input (maximum 2-hr average) to 0.2 lb of particulate matter, and, where solid fuel is burned, to 1.2 lb of sulfur dioxide and 0.7 lb of nitrogen dioxide. While the new rules are mainly for new plants, the EPA is also proposing them for "existing plants which are modified in such a way as to increase or alter. . . their emissions."

In this paper it is shown that the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field for the area of the United States can be very closely approximated by assuming it to be the sum of the vertical components of two magnetic fields. The first of these is the field of the centered dipole described by J. Bartels,l the axis of this dipole intersecting the earth's surface at two antipodal points, the one in the Northern Hemisphere being at latitude 78.5°N. and longitude 69°W., and the dipole having such strength that the vertical component of its field at its axis pole is 0.63 oersted. The second field is that due to a second dipole situated halfway between the center of the earth and a point on the earth's surface at latitude 38.5°N., longitude 91.5°W., the axis of this dipole being along this radius, the south pole being toward the surface, and the dipole being of such strength that its field at the point on the surface mentioned above is 0.069 oersted. Using the field computed on this basis, tables of latitude and longitude correction factors were computed and are included in the paper. It is also shown that the secular variation in the earth's magnetic field may be roughly accounted for by assuming it to be due to motion of the second dipole described above. Although there is an error in the equation used for computing the strength of the field due to the second dipole, the distribution of the field computed is very nearly that of the assumed arrangement of dipoles. Subsequent work by the author reveals that minor changes can be made in the location of the second dipole, which will make the computed field fit the observed field even more closely. It has also been found2 that the vertical component of the field may be represented equally well by a purely empiric relationship.

A. E. LEE, JR. (author)—In addition to the paper we should like to make a few remarks. First, the seriousness of bending of the clay retort cannot be overemphasized. Not only did bending limit the length of the vessel, but it permitted corrosive fluid slags to concentrate in the belly of the retort and thus increased the possibility of boring. Bending also practically prohibited the use of cleanout machines and increased the danger of excessive fume losses by allowing furnace gases to escape around the top of the retort mouth. It will be noted that the Blackwell pottery practice places considerable emphasis on careful drying of retorts. Perhaps it is another smelter superstition, but traditionally the aging of retorts beyond a reasonable drying period has been considered important to long life. We are unable to give a good explanation of why aging should improve retorts. During the past fall in an attempt to prove a theory that the combined water in the clay decreased during aging, about 50 samples of wet retort collars were placed in a dry room when it was closed. Loss of weight, combined water and free moisture were measured each week over the 100 day drying period. The affinity of the dried retort for moisture makes difficult the accurate measurement of free water; however, there was a clearly defined free moisture change from about 12.5 pct when freshly made to about 2 pet at the end of 18 days, then a gradual loss to about 0.25 pet at 70 days and an apparent equilibrium near this figure through the 100th day. There was no appreciable change in the combined water. The change in weight of the average sample was, however, rather unusual, there being consistently a loss of weight throughout the entire 100 days. From the 63rd day on this leveled off to about 0.03 pet per week. These were small samples and certainly should have dried

The agriculture industry has made great strides during the past decade to increase agriculture yields through increased use of fertilizers. Increased use of fertilizers may prevent, or at least delay, mass starvation due to the alarming increase in world population. Phosphate was added to soil as a plant nutrient in the form of calcined bones at least 2000 years ago (Anon., 1964), and man has used phosphate minerals as a source of fertilization in one form or another for at least 100 years. During 1977 the world produced about 116 Mt of phosphate rock, with about 86% used for fertilizers and another 4% for animal feed supplements. More than three-fourths of the total production comes from the United States, Morocco, and the Soviet Union. From a mineral beneficiation point of view, the major sources of phosphate rock and the methods of beneficiation can be classified as follows: marine deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, marine deposits requiring a francolite carbonate mineral separation, igneous deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, and igneous deposits requiring apatite carbonate mineral separation. [ ] Guano, mostly from Chile and Peru, accounts for 0.1% of the total world production, and the calcium phosphates from Ocean, Nauru, and Christmas Islands and the aluminum and iron phosphates from Brazil and Aruba account for less than 4% of the world production and are thus not considered in this classification (Lawver, et al.). At present, marine phosphorite deposits account for about 75% of the world's production; the igneous deposits account for 20%. The igneous deposits low in carbonate minerals are easily concentrated by crushing, grinding, and apatite flotation. The most important igneous deposits are those of the Kola Peninsula, USSR (Woodrooffe, 1972). The igneous deposits high in carbonate materials are of corn appreciably more difficult to beneficiate, but they have been concentrated by froth flotation for a number of years. An interesting but rather complicated flowsheet of this type is at Phalabonva, in the Republic of South Africa (Lovell, 1976). The Phalaborwa deposit is an igneous complex of pyroxenite with a central core of carbonatite surrounded by a serpentine- magnetite-apatite rock called phoscorite. The phoscorite containing about 10% P2O5, 35% magnetite, and 35% calcium magnesium carbonate is currently being processed. The process involves comminuting the material for fiberation and subjecting it to a copper float using a potassium amyl xanthate as collector and triethoxybutane as a frother followed by a magnetic separation of the tailings to produce a feed for phosphate flotation. This process produces a phosphate concentrate containing greater than 36% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery ranging from 75 to 80%. Considerable success has been claimed for recovering apatite from carbonate-bearing ores at the Jacupiranga Mine of Serrana S/A (Silva and Andery, 1972). The carbonatite currently being mined contains an average of only 5% P205 and is concentrated using a unique flotation process (Andery, 1968) to yield 96% P205 concentrates. The ore contains about 12% apatite, 5% magnetite, 80% calcite plus dolomite, and minor amounts of phlogopite, olivine, zircon, ilmenite, and pyrochlore. Feed preparation consists of crushing to -31.75 mm (-1 M in.), rod milling in closed circuit with hydrocyclones to about 92% (-50 mesh), and two-stage cyclone desliming of the -50 mesh sands at 20 m. Weight recovery in the deslimed feed is normally 85 to 88% and the corresponding P2O5 recovery is usually about 90%. The deslimed feed is conditioned at 60 to 70% solids for 15 min at pH = 8-10 with 0.6 kg/t of causticized starch for iron oxide and calcite-dolomite depression. The conditioned slurry is diluted to 20 to 30% solids, about 0.2 kg/t of fatty acid or soap collector is added to the conditioner discharge, and the reagentized ore is subjected to rougher-scavenger flotation with additional fatty acid added to the scavenger float. The scavenger concentrate is returned to rougher circuit distributor, and the rougher concentrate froth is subjected to two stages of cleaner flotation to yield a final apatite concentrate analyzing 36 to 38% P205. Flotation recovery of P205 is, in general, above 90% when treating fresh carbonatite. The high-carbonate flotation tails normally analyze 1 % P2O5 or less and are suitable for portland cement production. The marine deposits. Types 1 and 2 of central Florida are representative of enormous reserves of phosphate rock that will undoubtedly account for much of the world's production in the near future. Until very recently the sedimentary deposits high in carbonate minerals (Type 2) have not been considered reserves due to the difficulty in making a francolite-carbonate separation. Although no commercial plant has yet been built to beneficiate Type 2 ore, laboratory and pilot plant data indicate the process is viable. If so, the reserves of Florida and similar deposits throughout the world will be substantially increased. A discussion of the beneficiation of these two types of sedimentary deposits and the relation of the resulting concentrates to the fertilizer industry of the United States is the subject of this paper.

When sintered disks of synthetic chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) were leached in acidified aqueous solutions of ferric sulfate, the following reaction stoichiometry was obtained: CuFeS2 + 2Fe2(SO4)3 = CuSO4 + 5FeSO4 + 2S Over the temperature range from 50º to 94ºC, the reaction displayed parabolic kinetics. The parabolic rate constant for the dissolution of copper is given by the equation: log.k(mg2/cm4-hr)= 11.850 - 3780/T The activation energy for the dissolution process is 17 ± 3 kcal per mole. The parabolic kinetics have been attributed to the progressive thickening of a sulfur film on the surface of the chalcopyrite. When the leaching solutions contain less than 0.01 molar Fe+3 , the Fe concentration influences the rate of leaching, probably through a mechanism involving the diffusion of ferric sulfate through the sulfur layer. At higher Fe+3 concentrations, the rate control in the leaching. reaction has been attributed to the diffusion of ferrous sulfate through the sulfur. The rate of reaction is insensitive to changes in acid concentration and in disk rotation speed. ThE reaction of acidic ferric sulfate solutions with various sulfide minerals is of practical interest for both bacterial and heap leaching. This leaching medium is generally used with low-grade ores that cannot be treated profitably by conventional means. In both bacterial leaching1-3 and heap leaching, the active agent for sulfide dissolution is ferric sulfate. Although the reactions of ferric sulfate with chalcocite, covellite, and bornite have been investigated,4*7 the kinetics of leaching chalcopyrite with ferric sulfate have not been thoroughly studied. This paper reports a study of that reaction. EXPERIMENTAL Reagent-grade sulfur was purified by the method of Bacon and FanelliB and then it was vacuum-distilled to remove any soluble magnesium salts that had been introduced during the purification procedure.9 From stoichiometric quantities of the purified sulfur and hydrogen-reduced electrolytic copper sheet (99.90 pct Cu), CuS was synthesized at 450°C in a vacuum-sealed, pyrex vessel. About 24 hr was required for the completion of the reaction. A similar procedure involving hydrogen-reduced iron wire (99.90 pct Fe) was used to synthesize FeS1.002. A 2-furnace arrangement was required. The iron was heated to 800°C while the sulfur was maintained at about 400°C. Although the reaction to consume the sulfur was rapid, the material required additional heating (1 week) in a sealed silica ampoule at 800°C before it was homogenized. X-ray powder diffraction analysis confirmed that the copper sulfide was covellite and that the iron sulfide was troilite. The composition of the iron mineral was confirmed by wet chemical analysis. The two sulfides were ground to minus 100 mesh, weighed in equimolar amounts, mixed thoroughly, and pressed into pellets at 80,000 psi. The pellets were vacuum-sealed in pyrex ampoules and then sintered for 3 days at 550°C after an initial heating at 450°C for a few hours. The pellets were then cooled, polished with 3/0 emery paper, rinsed in acetone, and stored. The material had the characteristic brassy color of chalcopyrite and was shown by X-ray diffraction to be CuFeS2. Microscopic examination of the polished surfaces revealed small inclusions of pyrite (approximately 0.5 vol pct) as the only impurity. The presence of small amounts of a second iron compound will not alter the amount of dissolved copper but might increase the amount of ferrous ion slightly. It was calculated that dissolution of all of the pyrite and 100 mg of Cu (a typical value) would change the expected ferrous concentration by only 4 pct. Microscopic examination of a pellet after leaching revealed that the pyrite was not preferentially solubilized; only those pyrite grains at the surface were attacked. Hence, the pyrite is unlikely to alter the rate of copper dissolution. The chalcopyrite disks were about 1.7 mm thick and 27 mm in diam. They were about 80 pct of theoretical density, and for this reason their true reaction area was somewhat larger than the 5.8 sq cm area presented by the polished face. The disks were cemented to lucite cylinders in such a way that only the polished face was exposed. The disks were then leached by methods previously described.6,7 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Stoichiometry and Kinetics. The initial experiments were directed to the problem of resolving the stoichiometry of the leaching reaction. Disks of CuFeS2 were leached at 80°C for various periods of time in acidified ferric sulfate solutions that were protected from oxidation by a cover of flowing nitrogen. When the disks had been partly leached, they were removed, their soluble salts were washed out, and then they were treated with CS2 in a Soxhlet extraction apparatus. The ratio of elemental sulfur to dissolved copper thus obtained was approximately 2 to 1. After the extraction of elemental sulfur from the pellet, the residue consisted of unreacted chalcopyrite only. The effect of pH on the adsorption of dodecylamine at the mercury-aqueous solution interface was investigated by differential capacity and electrocapillary measurements. With dodecylammonium acetate, the differential capacity curves showed two desorption peaks in the cathodic branch with their relative intensities varying with the solution pH. With dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride, only one cathodic de-sorption peak was observed in the same pH range. Through thermodynamic analysis of the electrocapillary curves, the adsorption density of undissociated amine was evaluated separately from that of aminium ion. The adsorption densities of the un-dissociated amine and of the total amine increased with increasing pH. The ratio at the interface of undissociated amine to aminium ion was several orders of magnitude greater than the ratio in the solution and increased with increasing pH. The potential at the closest distance of approach of counter ions to the mercury surface was compared with values of zeta potential on quartz previously reported. The most important variable in the flotation separation of minerals is probably the pH of the pulp, and a number of theories have been proposed to explain its effect on the condition of the mineral surfaces, on the dissociation of collectors and of inorganic and organic species (accidentally present or intentionally added) in the pulp, and on the mineral-collector interaction. In the development of a theoretical background for oxide flotation systems, an experimental approach based on electrokinetic measurements has been of much value, although the effect of pH becomes confounded since it governs both the electrochemical conditions of the oxide surface and the dissociation of the collector. For investigation of the adsorption behavior of long-chain collectors on oxide minerals, however, electrokinetic potential measurements are the most widely used technique. Hydrogen and hydroxyl ions are found to be the potential determining species, thereby governing the interfacial electrical conditions. The electrostatic interaction between the charged mineral surfaces and ionized collectors is regarded as the driving force for the adsorption of the collectors. An association of alkylamine collectors adsorbed on quartz surfaces has been postulated from streaming potential measurements, and a term "hemi-micelles" has been proposed.' The possibilities of coad-sorption of undissociated amine along with aminium ion has been inferred from contact angle measurements? and from adsorption studies.~ Electrochemical titration as applied to silver sulfide provides a more quantitative approach to the analysis of the electrical double layer at an ionic solid-solution interfaceqG and the electrochemical evidence for the adsorption of amine at pH 4.7 indicates a specific affinity of dodecylammonium ion towards silver sulfide surfaces, whereas at pH 9.2 the adsorbed species might be free arnine." A combination of differential capacity and electrocapillary measurements on a dropping mercury electrode was reported to be a sensitive method of provid- ing reliable information on the adsorption behavior of dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) at a natural (near neutral) pH.? It was also shown that there were striking similarities in the properties of the double layer and in the adsorption behavior of the amine on mercury and on such ionic solids as quartz, silver sulfide, and silver iodide. The effect of pH on the differential capacity curves at a mercury-sodium fluoride solution interface has been investigated by Austin and Parsonss who reported that between pH 7 and pH 11 there was very little effect. In the present paper, the adsorption behavior of DAA was investigated as a function of pH through differential capacity and electrocapillary measurements and the information gathered was correlated with that available in literature on quartz and silver sulfide. Experimental The apparatus and the method used for determining the differential capacity and the electrocapillary curves were identical to those described previously.' The ionic strength of the supporting electrolyte was fixed at 0.1 M with potassium fluoride, and the pH of the solution with potassium hydroxide. Only the neutral to alkaline range was covered in order to avoid the dissolution of the glass vessel with hydrofluoric acid. Results In Fig. 1 the differential capacity has been plotted against the applied potential at a DAA concentration of 10-' M at three different pH values. The curves are characterized by one capacity peak in the anodic branch, by two capacity peaks in the cathodic branch, and by a marked depression in capacity between the peaks. The depression indicates an adsorption of the arnine in this potential range. One of the cathodic peaks appears at pH 7.3 near -1.4 v and decreases with increasing pH. The other appears at pH 8.9 near —1.2 v and increases with increasing pH. At pH 9.6 only the latter peak is observed. Beyond the cathodic peaks, all the curves tend to converge with the curve in the absence of DAA, implying that two different species are being desorbed in this potential region. The anodic peak near 0.0 v increases markedly with increasing pH. The well-defined anodic peaks at pH 8.9 and 9.6 were accompanied by an appreciable increase in the current flow (in excess of O.luA), and, therefore, is a "pseudo-capacity"'" due to a

The implantation of B+ , P+, and As&apos; into silicon has been studied with the purpose of making shallow p-n junctions. The influence of such parameters as 1) ion energy, 2) target orientation and temperature, 3) total dose, and 4) annealing schedule was investigated. An energy range of 70 to 300 kev was used for boron and phosphorus implants and up to 500 kev for arsenic. It is found that the experimental projected range agrees well with theory and that shallow junction depths can be made reproducibly. ION implantation has received much attention recently as a technique for doping semiconductors. Specifically, it has the potential of supplementing or replacing the diffusion process as a method for making p-n junctions. In a few specific cases it has been used successfully to make semiconductor junction devices. Potential advantages of ion implantation doping over diffusion techniques are: 1) It affords greater control of shallow junction depths (< 0.2 µ) while maintaining high peak concentrations. This is particularly important for high-speed switching devices, since lower junction capacitances and resistances can be achieved. 2) More precise registration of small planar structures can be realized if proper masking procedures are employed. This advantage is especially useful in the design of high-density integrated circuits. It has been used to advantage in FET fabrication since the edge of the source or drain can be aligned precisely at the edge of the gate electrode.&apos; 3) Ion implanatation permits lower temperatures than diffusion techniques. This factor alleviates the problem of compatibility of diffusivities often encountered when designing multiple-junction structures. Also, the lower temperatures create fewer thermal defects and dislocations, which may account for the high efficiency of some ion-implanted solar cells.2 4) Impurity profiles can be more easily tailored to resemble ideal distributions. Successful exploitation of the potential advantages of ion implantation techniques will depend on increased knowledge and understanding of the subject. The factors likely to be influential in determining impurity distribution profiles in ion-implanted single-crystal targets have been reviewed by J. F. Gibbons.3 In addition to the mass and energy of the implanted ion, the total dose, target orientation, and target temperature are important parameters. The annealing temperature required for removing lattice damage and incorporating the implanted species on an electrically active site is very important. This paper describes an investigation of some of these factors. Implants of boron, phosphorus, and arsenic into silicon have been studied. Energy ranges of 50 to 300 kev were used for boron and phosphorus and up to 500 kev for arsenic. In addition to the implantation energy, the effects of total dose, target temperature, and post implant anneal have been investigated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The implantation targets were silicon wafers cut from Czochralski-grown crystals, lapped, and chemically polished. The orientations were (111), (110). and (100) with misorientations of up to 7 deg from the principal axis. For this study, accurate target alignment (i.e., within 0.1 deg) was not available and quoted misorientation values should be regarded as approximate . The implantation equipment consisted of an ion source, a 300-kev linear accelerator tube, an electromagnetic separator, and the associated target supporting and beam focusing assemblies. The ion source was a simple oscillating electron type source,4 which has been described elsewhere.5 The gaseous compounds BF3, PF5, and AsH3 were used as ion sources for B+, P+, As+, and AS+&apos;. Analyzed current levels of up to 20 pamp could be obtained; however, for this investigation target current levels of 1-3 µ amp were usually employed. The analyzed ion beam was collimated through a double slit (1.4 x 0.4 cm) and swept perpendicularly to the long axis of the slit such that an area of about 2 sq cm on each target was covered. Dosages of around 1015 cm-2 were normally employed, but smaller amounts were also used for comparison. A uniform flux density over the bombarded area was assured by the continuous use of profile monitors similar to those described by Wegner and Feigenbaum.6 Post-implant annealing was accomplished in an argon atmosphere in a temperature range of 600" to 950°C. It was not part of the purpose of this investigation to study the annealing kinetics; however, some isochronal and isothermal anneal experiments were conducted to determine the time and temperature necessary to render a reasonably high portion of the implanted ions electrically active (i.e., higher than 50 pct). Post-implant anneal temperatures of around 900° and 600°C were required for boron, and arsenic and phosphorus implants, respectively. Arsenic and phosphorus implants increased in conductivity rather abruptly at the proper anneal temperature of the isochronal curve, but boron increased more gradually over a wider range. Isothermal anneal curves were reasonably flat after 10 min, so an anneal time of 1/2 hr was used for the experimental results described below. The profiling techniques were: 1) neutron activation analysis, 2) differential sheet resistance,7 and 3) junction staining.8 The differential sheet resistance technique is commonly employed in this type of study. In 1957 research was initiated in the U.S. Bureau of Mines experimental coal mine near Pittsburgh, Pa., to study factors affecting foam generation and transport, to evaluate the effectiveness of high-expansion foam for controlling mine fires, and to develop techniques for applying the method under U.S. mining conditions. These investigations showed that high-expansion foam containing at least 0.2 oz of water per cu ft of foam is effective in controlling experimental underground fires burning coal, wood, and oil. Sometimes the fire was completely extinguished, but more often, it was brought under sufficient control to permit either a direct attack on the fire with a stream of water or loading of the hot material into cars. A progress report&apos; prepared in July 1958 summarized the initial achievements of the USBM experiments. Since then other phases of the foam-plug method for attacking fires have been studied in the laboratory and in the mine. Previous studies by British engineers&apos; of the foam-plug method for fighting mine fires indicated that high-expansion foam was effective in controlling experimental timber fires in an underground passageway. Their subsequent workx-1 pertained to the practical aspects of fighting large fires within a mining area with a foam-plug. CONTROLLING EXPERIMENTAL FIRES In the USBM tests foam was formed by spraying a dilute solution of a foaming agent on a metal or cotton net of 1/8 to 1/4-in. mesh. Air passing through the continuously wetted net forms bubbles of 1/2 to 11/2-in. diam and produces a honeycomb of foam that fills the passageway. Under the ventilating-air pressure, this light-weight plug moves forward through the passageways, around sharp corners, and over obstacles. as illustrated in Fig. 1. High-expansion foam was transported to a wood fire, an oil fire, and 13 coal fires. Figs. 3 and 4 show a typical coal fire before and after attack with foam. In 12 of the 15 experiments the fire was brought under control when the water content of foam was 0.2 oz or more per cu ft. A fire was considered controlled when the flames were quenched and observers could cross the area without wearing breathing apparatus or protective clothing. In the other three experiments, conducted when the water content was less than 0.2 oz per cu ft of foam, the flames were retarded but the fire was not controlled. Coal fires have been attacked successfully by foam introduced at points varying from 155 to 1010 ft from the fire. The time of burning in coal beds 10 in. thick ranged from 11/2 to 5 hrs or more. Most of the experimental fire beds were 15 ft in length. However, in one experiment a floor fire 25 ft long and 5 ft wide was constructed $5 upwind from another fire 15 ft in length; in another instance, the fire was 100 ft long and 5 ft wide. Foam was applied to the fires for periods ranging from 7 to 36 min. The time required for foam application depends on the extent of the fire, time of burning, water content of foam, foam velocity, and degree of fire control desired. In addition to the coal fires, foam was transported to a fire covering 45 sq ft, produced by 15 gal of oil burning in metal trays on the floor. The foam extinguished the oil fire in about 1 min. In one other test, the burning of 1100 lb of dry sawmill slabs stacked in open cribs 4 ft high and 16 ft long was brought under control by foam in 2 min. Composition of Gases in Return Air: In several of the experiments samples of the return air from fire zones were collected; composition of the atmosphere before, during, and after foam application was then determined. Because of condensation in the relatively cool sampling tube, the amount of water vapor was not determined. Analyses showed that concentration of carbon dioxide and combustible gases increased as the foam began passing over the fire. This resulted from the decrease in the volume of air when foam generation started and from the formation of gases when water reached the fire.* The quantity of gases generated would not be greater than that from an equivalent amount of water applied directly to the fire. The highest total concentration of combustibles (CO, CH1, and H2 mixture) obtained during the experiment was about 2 pct; this occurred 6 min after foam reached the fire. This atmosphere was nonex-plosive, but calculations show that if the air flow were reduced to about 5 fpm and if the rate of gas liberation from the fire remained constant, the mixture would be explosive. The use of foam on a fire in all probability would affect the normal ventilation of a mine. If the mine is gassy, this factor must be carefully considered before the foam is applied. APPLICATION OF THE FOAM-PLUG TECHNIQUE IN MINES Equipment and procedures for applying the foam-plug methods must be adapted to the prevailing conditions at a particular mine. Some factors to be considered in developing equipment are: size or extent of the mine, dimensions and number of entries, ventilation system, mining methods, haulage facilities, availability of water, amount of methane liberated, and existing fire-control apparatus. • In most experiments the initial air velocity of 200 fpm decreased to 50 to 100 fpm as the foam plug increased In length.

Lightly deformed columbiun single crystals which contained only parallel hoins or purullel and intersecting trains were annealed at 1000&apos; and 1600"C. No re-crystallizntion occurred in specimens hawing only parallel twins. Only noncoherent twin boundaries nzipated at 1000°C but both coherent and noncoherent ones moved al 1600°C. Recrystallization occurred within a few minutes at twin intersections at 1000°C. The orientation 01 the recrystallized grains differed front that of both the matrix and deformation twins, but could he derired by (110) and/or(112) rotations. ALTHOUGH twinning in metals has been extensively studied, there have been no definitive studies of the annealing behavior of crystals containing deformation twins. Some effects observed after annealing deformation twins have been summarized by Cahn1 and Hall2. Any or all of these phenomena are observed: 1) The twins may contract so that the sharp edges of the lens become blunted, and eventually the twin may disappear entirely. 2) The twins may balloon out at an edge, giving rise to a large grain having the same orientation as the twin. 3) The specimen may recrystallize; i.e., new grains are nucleated and grow at the expense of the twins and the crystal immediately adjoining the twin. Such grains have orientations which are not present before. Contraction has been observed in iron,3 titanium,3, 4 beryllium,5 zinc,8, 7 Fe-A1 alloy,&apos; and uranium.9 Long anneals at high temperatures are required to have any appreciable effect in these metals and only thin twins are absorbed. Lens-shaped twins are absorbed from the edges: the thin, almost parallel-sided twins are usually punctured in several places and each piece contracts independently. Absorption is very gradual and no sudden cooperative jumps have been observed. The expansion of a twin into a larger grain of identical orientation is unusual, but such growth has been observed in iron,"&apos;" zinc,6 and uranium." Crystals which have been deformed simultaneously by slip and twinning recrystallize first in the area adjacent to the twin. New grains appear faster where the twins intersect: but isolated twins, especially if thick, can also give rise to new grains. This type of recrystallization occurs in zinc.6, 7, 12, 13 and beryllium.14 Reed-Hill noted, in a single crystal of magnesium, the nucleation of a recrystallized grain at a twin intersection which had the same orientation as the second-order twin and which grew into the highly strained matrix.15 Short-time annealing has been reported to cause no change in the deformation twins in vanadium,16 columbium, 17, 18 tantalum,19 tungsten,&apos;&apos; and zinc.7 The purpose of this investigation was to note the effects of annealing on the coherent and noncoherent boundaries of deformation twins in columbium and to locate the nucleating sites for recrystallization. The orientation relationships, which the new recrystallized grains have with the parent crystal and the deformation twins, were also determined. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of columbium were obtained by cutting large grains from electron-beam-melted buttons which contained 10 to 50 ppm C, 10 to 100 ppm O,, 1 to 10 ppm H2, and 10 to 15 ppm N2. The crystals were hand-ground and chemically polished until all grain boundaries were removed. The specimens were mounted in an epoxy resin and a face of each crystal was mechanically polished on a Syntron polisher using Linde A and then Linde B polishing compounds. After all faces were mechanically polished, the crystal was electrolytically polished to remove all distortion due to cutting and grinding. Laue photographs were taken of all faces of the crystals to determine the quality and orientation of each crystal. The crystals were compressed about 10 pct at -196 C in a specially constructed compression cage with an Instron tensile machine. Each crystal was separated from the top and bottom anvils by teflon films which acted as a lubricant. With the specimen crystal in position, the entire cage was cooled to -196°C by being submerged in a Dewar containing liquid nitrogen. The crystals were compressed at a rate of 0.02 in. per min and the load was recorded on a strip-chart recorder. After deformation the crystals were mechanically polished on 600-grit paper and Pellon cloth with Linde A and Linde B polishing compounds. The crystal faces were chemically polished and then etched. The twin planes were identified metallographically from an analysis of the twin traces on two surfaces. Annealing was carried out by placing each crystal in a columbium bucket made from the same electron-beam-melted material as the crystal itself and suspending the bucket by a tantalum wire in a quartz tube. After a vacuum of 10-7 Torr was attained, a furnace at 1000" or 1600 C was raised into position and the crystals held for various lengths of time. The crystals were repolished and etched after annealing to remove any surface contamination. Approximately 0.010 in. was removed during this process. The resulting surface was examined metallographically for microstructural changes due to annealing. A microbeam Laue camera mounted on a Hilger Micro-focus X-ray unit was used to determine the Orientstions of the recrystallized grains. This X-ray micro-beam camera had a 0.002-in.-diam collimator and incorporated the ideas of both and and chisWik21 and Cahn.22

THE pioneering work of Steinitz1 and Steinitz, Binder, and Moskowitz2 has shown conclusively the existence at high temperature of two additional phases in the molybdenum-boron system and thus brings to a total of six the number of structures appearing in this system. To the structures Mo2B, MOB, and Mo2B5 they have added MO3B2, a new -MOB form, and have shown that MOB,, which has the same range of composition as Mo2B5, is only a high temperature structure of the latter. This solid solution, interestingly enough, includes neither of the compositions corresponding to the stoichiomet-ric compounds, MOB, or Mo2B5, but rather at all temperatures has intermediate values of composition. These workers have also, in the course of their work, measured melting points, transition temperatures, eutectic and peritectic points in the system and have shown that Mo3B2, because of its dispro-portionation at low temperature to Mo2B and MOB, is stable only in a limited high temperature range. During the course of the present work on the vaporization properties of the molybdenum-boron compounds, a few transition temperatures were observed. When the report of the other workers appeared, it was decided to repeat, in part, their study of the system. As a result, considerable evidence has been obtained that substantiates the specific kinds of melting processes they report as well as the general features of their diagram. However, a marked difference was found between the temperatures they report and the ones observed in this study, with the latter being higher. The purposes of this paper are to present the evidence obtained in this laboratory that verifies their diagram of the system, to give some important temperatures in the system, to compare them with those previously published, and to seek an explanation of the difference. Samples The metal starting material was 400 mesh molybdenum powder with a purity stated by the manufacturer to be 99.9 pct. The initial treatment, designed to remove volatile contamination, consisted of heating in a vacuum for 10 min to a temperature of from 800" to 1000°C during which a loss of 0.3 to 0.4 pct occurred. An assay following this treatment showed it to be 99.4 pct pure, with the principal impurity probably being oxygen. The boron starting material was obtained from the Cooper Metallurgical Laboratories and the Fair-mount Chemical Co. as 325 mesh powder with manufacturers&apos; analyses of 99 pct or better. Initial treatment consisted of heating in molybdenum in a vacuum at about 1700°C for 10 min. During this time a loss of 3.5 pct occurred. An assay following this treatment showed the different samples to have purities ranging from 95.5 to 99.0 pct with iron and carbon as the principal impurities. Following the initial treatment, the elements were combined to form stocks of Mo2B and MOB by heating pressed mixtures in a vacuum to 1100" to 1200°C to accomplish reaction and to 1500" to 1900°C for a few minutes to evaporate the more volatile impurities. Analysis of the two compounds for boron by a modification of the method of Blumenthal3 and for molybdenum by the lead-molybdate method indicated them to have purities greater than 99 pct. The individual samples to be studied had compositions in the Mo2B-MOB range and consisted of mixtures of the stock compounds. Procedure As is usually the case in high temperature work the selection of containers for the samples posed some problems. For vapor pressure studies tantalum crucibles, allowing little contact with the pressed samples, were used and some of the observations made during these experiments are pertinent to the study of the phase diagram. Most of the experiments, however, were performed in graphite containers, as were those of the previous authors. Two kinds of spectroscopic grade graphite crucibles were used. One was a % in. cylinder, 3/4 in. high, containing seven 3/16 in. holes drilled 1/2 in. deep into which were packed samples of the different mixtures weighing 250 to 500 milligrams. The other, consisting of separate crucibles, was prepared by drilling 3/16 in. holes, 1/2 in. deep into 1/4 in. graphite rods % in. long. The 7/8 in. cylinder was heated directly by induction while the small crucibles were packed in a tantalum heating element for induction heating. All heating was done in a high vacuum system in which the pressure was generally less than 1x10-5mm and never rose above 2x10-5mm when the samples were hot. The general pattern of the heating in graphite was to heat rapidly to a temperature somewhat below the desired one, then to raise the temperature slowly. The samples were held for 2 to 5 min at the maximum temperature, which in all cases was far higher than that needed to produce reaction. The short time was employed to reduce possible contamination by the crucible material and to reduce composition changes that would occur because of vaporization. After examination following the heating, the samples were reheated to a higher temperature. Temperatures were measured with a Leeds and Northrup disappearing filament optical pyrometer, certified by the National Bureau of Standards, by sighting through a window at the top of the vacuum

The thermodynamzc properties oJ liquid Cd-Sb alloys were investigated using the cell arrangement measurments were obtained every 2°C at a heating and cooling rate of 12°C per hr and at equilibrium every 2O0C frorn 500°C down through the stable liquidus. The S-shaped asCd US composition curve was used in the cotnposition regzon near Cd,Sb, to calculate a tempeerture-dependent inleraction coefficient from quasichemical theory. Rapid changes in a scd were observed at a transition temperature varying from 400" to 465°C depending on con/kosition. It could not be determined if the changes in aScd were discontinuous, but tlze composition dependeke of the magnitude of the change is indicative of a second-order phase transformation in the liquid. The values of the experimental changes in ASCd are in agreement with calculations from the slope of the transition temperature, using the concept that a second-ovdev phase transition occurs in liquid Cd-Sb alloys. II is suggested that the transformalion is associated with the formation of Cd4Sb3 molecules in the liquid. ThE structure of liquid alloys is the subject of many investigations. X-ray, resistivity, and thermody-namic data have been interpreted as indicating varying degrees of short-range order in the liquid in alloy systems forming inter metallic compounds. In general, the melting process is not a transition from an ordered to a completely disordered state, but some degree of order is retained in the liquid. Maximum ordering in the liquid state occurs close to the melting temperature of the compound and the arrangement of atoms becomes more random at higher temperatures. Of special interest in this respect is the Cd-Sb system. It is one of the few metallic systems which form both stable and metastable compounds when liquid alloys are cooled at normal rates. The stable system exhibits an intermetallic compound, CdSb, melting at 459"c.l A second compound, CdrSbs, has also been reported,&apos; melting close to this temperature. The metastable system has one compound, CdsSbz, melting at 420"c.I Resistivity measurements on liquid Cd-Sb alloys close to the liquidus temperatures have been interpreted in terms of a complex ordering behavior which changes rapidly with increasing temperature.3 The resistivity-composition curve is characterized by two maxima corresponding in composition to CdSb and CdsSbz. The resistivity-temperature plots show sharp breaks for alloys in the composition range of 45 to 70 at. pct Cd on cooling through a transition temperature close to the stable liquidus. Fisher and phillips4 investigated the influence of temperature and composition on the viscosity of liquid CdSb alloys. The viscosity of some alloys increases sharply on supercooling below the stable liquidus. A maximum in the viscosity-composition curve occurs at the composition CdSb. The thermodynamic properties of liquid Cd-Sb alloys have been investigated by Seltz and ~e~itt&apos; and Elliott and chipmane by the electromotive-force method and their results are in good agreement. However, these investigations were carried out at temperatures well above the liquidus temperatures of the alloys, and the temperature coefficients of the electromotive force, dE/dT, were obtained from experimental points for each alloy at a few temperatures considerably above the liquidus temperature. Scheil and ~aach&apos; investigated the thermodynamic properties of this system by the dew point method in the temperature range from about 100°C above the stable liquidus down into the supercooled liquid region. They reported several anomalies, i.e., the activity of a melt on heating differed from that on cooling, and the activity increased sharply in the limited temperature interval immediately above the liquidus temperature of the stable alloy, followed by a sudden decrease below the liquidus. Values obtained on heating and cooling were not in agreement. A reinvesti-gation of a few alloys by Scheil and Kalkuhl&apos; by the electromotive-force method failed to confirm these observations. The authors concluded that the anomalies were due to inhomogeneities in the starting alloys and they discarded their previous results. The present investigation was undertaken in order to obtain thermodynamic data close to the liquidus temperature and in the supercooled region where the anomalies were originally reported, employing the electro motive-force method. This method is quite precise and will most easily permit observations of small changes in activity and partial molar entropy with temperature. Measurements were taken every few degrees so that the dE/dT values could be calculated over the entire temperature range and small changes in the thermodynamic properties close to the liquidus temperature could be observed. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were prepared from 99.999+ pct Cd and Sb (Cominco). Surface oxide was removed by scraping and then melting the metals under vacuum and filtering through Pyrex wool. Appropriate amounts of the metals were weighed on an analytical balance to k0.1 mg, sealed in double Pyrex capsules under vacuum,

Two predictions of the oriented growth theory of recrystallization textures have been tested by measuring the orientation dependence of the rate of growth of a single grain into a strained single crystal of aluminum, and determining the orientations of artificially and spontaneously nucleated grains growing preferentially into strained aluminum single crystals. Growth rates are found to be insensitive to orientation, except that new grains with orientations similar to the matrix or to a twin of the matrix have very low mobilities. Similarly, new grains growing preferentially into a strained crystal have random orientations, except that orientations near that of the matrix or its twins are avoided. The predictions of oriented growth theory are thus not confirmed. BASICALLY, the oriented growth theory of re-crystallization textures1 rests on the assumption that the rate of growth of a recrystallizing grain depends strongly on the orientation of the growing grain relative to the strained matrix into which it grows. In particular, the theory holds that in face-centered-cubic metals the orientation which corresponds to maximum growth rate is one in which the growing grain and the matrix are related by a rotation about a common <111> direction. The amount of rotation, as derived from several kinds of experiments,2-1 has been assigned various values, generally in the range between 20" and 40". (A <111> rotation of 60" is a twin relationship.) The conclusion that boundary migration rates depend strongly on orientation is based almost entirely on indirect evidence; there have been very few direct measurements of boundary migration rates as a function of orientation.* " The present investigation was undertaken to provide such measurements, to help make possible a decision between the oriented growth and oriented nilcleation theories of recrystal-lization textures. The basic experimental program consisted of measuring the rate of growth of a single recrystal-lizing grain consuming a strained single crystal, with the orientations of both grains preselected so that the effect of orientation on growth rate could be determined. A prerequisite for such an experiment is a strained single crystal which will support the growth of a new grain but which will not spontaneously nucleate new grains on heating. That is, the crystal must support the growth of a grain nucleated artificially, but contain no recrystalliza-tion nuclei which will become active at the testing temperature. Beck was apparently the first to note that such a condition could exist," and to make use of the condition for am experiment of the type described here.&apos; The present work was actually suggested, however, by a report of Tiedema". " that an aluminum single crystal strip, oriented with a (111) plane in the plane of the strip and a < 112> direction parallel to the tensile axis, would not recrystallize after 20 pet extension even when heated almost to the melting point, provided that the strip was heavily etched before being heated. This result could not be duplicated in the present work. In fact, it was found that any crystal which deformed in multiple slip (<100>, <112> and <111> orientations) underwent spontaneous nucleation after 15 pet extension, even if etched. However, crystals which deformed in single slip, and which did not develop heavy deformation bands, could be extended 15 pet without showing spontaneous nucleation at temperatures up to 600°C. Crystals oriented within about 10o of <110> which developed heavy deformation bands could be extended 10 pet without showing spontaneous nucleation. In all cases a heavy etch was required to prevent nucleation. Etching was necessary because of the presence of an oxide layer on the crystal surface at the time of straining, which leads to preferential nucleation at the surface.&apos;&apos; Grain Growth Rates Experimental Procedure and Results—Aluminum strips of 99.6 pet purity (principal impurities 0.19 pet Fe and 0.12 pet Si), 1 mm by 1 cm in cross section, were grown into single crystals of controlled orientation by the strain-anneal method of Fuji-wara.&apos;"&apos; " A sharp temperature gradient was maintained in the strips during growth by lowering them into a salt bath controlled at 650°C. Crystal orientations were determined by the etch-pit method of Barrett and Levenson" to an accuracy of ±2O. The crystals were extended by 10 or 15 pet in a simple hand operated tensile machine. Crystal orientations were rechecked after extension, and were found to be in agreement with the orientations predicted by the formula of Schmid and Boas." After extension, the grip ends of the single crystal specimen were cut off with a jeweller&apos;s saw, and the crystal heavily etched (at least 20 pet wt loss) in hot 10 pet Na or KOH solution. A region of severe local deformation was then introduced at one corner of the strip, usually by cutting off the corner with shears. Heating this end of the strip caused a large number of new grains to nucleate at the sheared edge. One of these grains grew to occupy the full width of the strip. The appearance of the strip at

A key step in feed water treatment for generating wet steam for thermal oil recovery is the removal of calcium and magnesiunt hardness by cation-exchange series softening. Knowing the solubility of any scale forming salts in brines at elevated temperatures is necessary for fixing the level to which the feed water must be softened. Such calcium sulfate solubility data, previously not available above 392F, were determined by the authors in a flow equilibrium apparatus mud will be reported elsewhere. These data were used to develop a method for predicting the solubility of anhydrite in hot water or steam droplets for saturated steam pressures as high as 2,000 psig (637F). (The calcium sulfate solubility product is represented by a combination of two factors, one reflecting the effects of ionic strength and the other accounting for the effects of complex ion formation in either calcium-magnesium-rich or sulfate-rich brines.) The method is applied to a calcium-magnesium-rich brine If moderately high salinity from a pilot hot-water flood, I nd to several sulfate-rich, low-salinity feed waters and l lowdown (cooled steam droplets) samples from steam s ak operations. The predicted calcium hardness levels corresponding to the calcium sulfate solubilities agreed reasonably well with the results of laboratory solubility determinations run on the field samples. Further testing of the method is needed for brines of other composition classes. Existing field cation exchange softeners in the cases tested are performing adequately since all the samples were found to be undersaturated with respect to calcium sulfate at their operating temperatures. Introduction Prevention of scaling caused by precipitation of calcium sulfate (anhydrite) is of considerable concern in connection with thermal recovery processes using wet steam or hot water. To avoid anhydrite precipitation in a heated system, an engineer must keep the product of the calcium and sulfate concentrations in the water or steam droplets below the value of the solubility product of anhydrite for the temperature and brine composition in question. Usually it is most practical to keep the concentration product lower than the solubility product by keeping calcium low in the presence of high sulfate, or by keeping sulfate low in the presence of high calcium. This can be done by a choice of combinations of natural waters and water treatment processes (such as series cation exchange softening to remove calcium). Until recently, few anhydrite solubility data, particularly for solutions containing other salts, were available for temperatures above 392F (211 psig steam); Marshall, Slusher and Jones&apos; studied the CaS0,-NaCI-H,O system up to 392F and surveyed the work of previous investigators. To model natural brines, one needs to study the solubility of anhydrite in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and their mixtures. Since steam pressures as high as 2,000 psig (637F) may be involved in thermal oil recovery projects, a solubility study was conducted between 482 and 617F.&apos; Discussed in this paper is the application of these data to the prediction of anhydrite precipitation in some practical steam soak and hot-water injection projects. Any simple method for predicting the solubility of an inorganic compound over a wide range of temperatures and solution compositions must be based on some assumptions, and therefore must yield approximate results. On the one hand, natural brines contain too many ionic species for all to be included in a simple scheme; on the other hand, there is no adequate theoretical basis for the exact prediction of solubility in even simple solutions of mixed electrolytes. However, it is possible at a given temperature to base a reasonable prediction scheme on two phenomena:&apos;-&apos; the increase in solubility with increasing total concentrations of all ions (as measured by the ionic strength; see the Appendix), and an increase due to formation of cornplexes between calcium ions and sulfate ions and between sulfate and magnesium ions. Stiff and Davis&apos; developed such a scheme for predicting the solubility of gypsum (CaSO, ¦ 2H,O) in brines at temperatures u~ to 212F. However, for the higher temperaturei of present interest, the stable solid phase is anhydrite (CaSO,). This study involves a two-part method for predicting anhydrite solubility products. First, one predicts a value K, for a given ionic strength I and a given temperature T corresponding to mo./msr, = 1 from data of the CaS0,-NaCI-H,O system. Second, one determines a group of factors F .= F(Ca) • F(Mg) • F(SO,), where the individual factors account for increases in the solubility product due to complex formation by high concentrations, respectively, of calcium, magnesium and sulfate. Recent experiments with II-VI compounds have shown that they hazle considerable potential for laser applications over a broad region of the optical spectrum. It may be possible to cover the spectrum continuously from 3200A (ZnS) to the far infrared (CdHg:Te) since HgTe is a semimetal. At this writing laser action has been observed in ZnS, Zn0, CdS, CdSe, CdS:Se, CdTe, and some of the CdHg:Te alloys. Of particular interest are those lasers operating in the zlisible and near ultraciolet regzons of the spectrum where detectors of high sensitivity are available. The lasing transitions in II-VI compounds are bound exciton transitions some of which have been identified in auxiliary experiments. High efficiencies and low thresholds for lasing hare been achieved almost exc1usively in plutelet-type crystals. The greater crystalline quality exhibited by the phtelet-type material is shown to result from the crystal growth habit. Phonon scattering- of conduction electrons to the ground-state exciton is discussed ill relution to Lou thresholds and high efficiencies for lasing- observed in the CdS:Se solid solutions. The first successful semiconductor laser operation was achieved in the III-V compounds. It is possible to choose a material in this group that will operate between approximately 0.65 and 8.5 . There are at least two reasons why one would like to have a laser operating at shorter wavelengths. First, it would be easier to experiment with a laser operating in the visible region of the spectrum, and also more desirable to have high-in tensity visible light sources. Second, the most sensitive photomul-tiplier detectors are available in the visible and near ultraviolet regions of the spectrum. It is known that II-VI compounds are direct-band-gap semiconductors and as such offer the potential of operating at any specified wavelength between 3200 (ZnS) and 7772A (CdTe). Light emission from II-VI compounds has been the subject of numerous investigations for many years. These investigations were all primarily concerned with noncoherent emission. It has been only recently that coherent emission from these compounds has been observed. To date, laser operation has been demonstrated in CdS, CdSe, and the solid solutions of CdS:Se, ZnS, ZnO, and CdTe. These compounds cover an appreciable portion of the optical spectrum from the ultraviolet to the near infrared. In considering laser applications, the use of lasers in communication&apos;s systems offers many desirable features. In any operation of this type one must consider the losses in transmitting the radiation from the source to the detector. Atmospheric absorption in the visible and near ultraviolet is variable and greater than in certain regions of the infrared. It might be concluded that for long-range communication systems an infrared laser operating in a spectral region that is coincident with a transmission window in the atmosphere would be preferable. However, one cannot overlook the possibility of operating a system in the sensitive region of a highly sensitive photomultiplier detector or other light-amplifying system. LASER CONSIDERATIONS To produce a source of coherent radiation it is necessary to achieve a population inversion. In the case of semiconducting materials it is necessary to raise the electrons from one energy state to a higher-energy state relative to it. In semiconductors, this population inversion can be achieved by three different techniques: 1) Current Injection. This technique uses a p-n junction biased in the forward direction. Large numbers of electrons are injected from the n region into the p region, and recombination occurs close to the junction. An inverted population is obtained in this region and the recombination radiation propagates parallel to the junction. This type of pumping has been used in the GaAs junction-type lasers but has not been successfully employed in the II-VI compounds. 2) Optical Pumping. In this case, one uses photons to obtain a population inversion by exciting electrons to higher-energy states. The pump sources are flash lamps or arc lamps and, occasionally, other laser sources when such sources have the appropriate energy for exciting the electrons. The disadvantage of this type of pumping is that flash lamps put out a rather broad spectrum of radiation, whereas the laser material has a rather narrow region of absorption. This results in an inefficient process. Laser sources provide efficient pump sources but the number of usable wavelengths is limited. 3) Electron Beam Pumping. In this technique, the laser sample cavity is bombarded with electrons having energies in the range from approximately 10 to a few hundred kv. The bombarding radiation excites electrons from valence to conduction band states in the semiconductor, giving rise to an inverted population. This type of pumping has been used successfully in several 11-VI compounds.

The constant-rate drawdown test performance for a low-permeability, verticany fractured gas well was investigated. A series of gar wells were tested by flowing each well at constant rate until the data could be analyzed using con-ventional radial flow theory. Each well was then shut in to build up. After a sufficient buildup was obtained, another flow Iest commenced but at a higher flow rate than Ihe first test. Again, the well was shut in when radial fiow was obtained. his procedure was repeated for three to four different flow rates. Two wells in the San Juan basin were tested using this procedure. Both wellere fractured after completion, cleaned up and then shut in until flow testing commenced. Test designs of both wells permitted investigation of the most realistic values of egective permeability, wellbore radius and turbulence factor. Also, being able to determine the eflective fracture flow area and vertical fraclure efficiency was inherent with this testing approach. It was observed that fractures in both wells influenced the Pressure behavior for approximately Is to 40 hours (depending on the flow rate) before radial flow was evident. Introduction During tests on gas wells in the Sari Juan basin7 initial transient behavior lasted for many days because of the low permeability of some porous media. As a result, stabilized flow performance could not be obtained. If these wells received some type of stimulation treatment, early pressure behavior deviated from conventional theoretical radial Row. When conventional radial flow theory was used to analyze these low-permeability fractured gas wells, larger values of flow capacity and absolute open flow potentials (AOF) sometimes resulted. Wells were assigned open flow poten- tials that proved to be 3 to 10 times higher than the well would sustain over a longer period of production. In some cases where the wells had flowed for longer periods of time during a constant-rate drawdown test, it was noticed that the effective flow capacity appeared to be decreasing with time until a certain value was reached. The early nonradial pressure behavior can be explained If linear flow is assumed. Rusell and Truitt mathematic. ally investigated the vertically fractured well in a bounded area. They showed that early flow behavior was essentially linear and, for x,/x. approximately less than 0.10 radial flow was obtained after short periods of time. Then realistic values of effective permeability and skin could be determined. Scotta experimentaliy studied the vertically fractured well with a heat flow analog. He showed that earb flow was linear, Both studies indicate that, for small values of x,/x,, linear flow approaches radial flow if the well is tested long enough, To help prove this concept of early linear flow caused by induced vertical fractures, two low-permeability gas wells were tested. Both wells received large fracture treatments prior to testing. A vertical fracture was indicated from the analysis of fracture treatments, As anticipated, tests of both wells indicated early linear flow that was later followed by a period of radial flow, Data collected from each well were analyzed. From the well tests, plus other information on each well, the effective permeability, wellbore radius and turbulence factor were calculated. Effective fracture flow areas calculated from test analyses for each well proved to be approximately one-fourth the created area calculated from classic hydraulic fracturing theory: other fractured wells that were tested but not presented in this paper also indicated that the effective fracture flow area was one-fourth to one-third the created area predicted from hydraulic fracturing theory. The vertical fracturing efficiency was estimated from the calculated values of effective wellbore radius and fracture flow area. For the two wells tested, calculated fracture lengths x, were 112 and 105 ft, and the vertical fracturing efficiencies E, were 122 and 183 percent. Development of Flow Model Agnew&apos; showed that most induced fractures below 1,500 ft are vertical. Anderson and Stah15 indicated that most of the fractures they studied were vertical. The factors which control the rate of dissolution of pure gold in cyanide solution were studied both directly and through measurement of solution the current-potential curves for the anodic and cathodic portions of the reaction. The mechanism of dissolution is probably electrochemical the reaction in nature, and the rate is determined by the rate of diffusion of dissolved oxygen or cyanide to the gold surface, depending on their relative concentrations. The significance of the results and the effects of impurities are considered. ALTHOUGH the dissolution of gold in aerated cyanide solutions has been used as an industrial process for treatment of gold ores since the late nineteenth century, the factors which determine the rate of the reaction have never been identified unambiguously. Studies of the rate of dissolution by Maclaurin,1 White,2 Christy,3 Beyers,4 Thompson,6 and others are contradictory in their conclusions; some claiming that diffusion of the reactants to the gold. surface controls the rate, and others that the chemical reaction is inherently slow and related to high activation energy for the reaction. Christy3 and &apos;Thompson" both suggest that the reaction is electrochemical in nature and that the dissolution of gold proceeds at local anodic regions while the oxygen is reduced at cathodic regions on the gold surface. Although their studies are ingenious and do indicate an electrochemical reaction under the conditions of study, their experiments were of limited nature and failed to identify the rate-controlling process in the system. The importance from an industrial viewpoint of a knowledge of the mechanism and rate-controlling factors in gold dissolution can be illustrated as follows: If the rate is controlled by a slow chemical reaction rather than by diffusion of the reactants, then an increased temperature should have a marked accelerating effect; agitation of the slurry should have no effect on rate: and increased concentration of reactants should cause acceleration of the rate. If the rate is controlled by the diffusion of one or the other of the reactants to the gold surface, then increased agitation should increase the rate; increased temperature will increase the rate, but not as much as for the case of a slow chemical reaction; increased concentration of the reactant which is diffusion limited will increase the rate; and the concentration of other reactants should be without effect on the rate. It may be concluded that for design of a commercial process for gold leaching, the rate-controlling factors of the reaction should be understood so that an intelligent choice of the conditions of agitation, temperature, and reactant concentration may be made. The experiments described here lead to the unambiguous conclusion that in a system of pure gold and a pure aerated cyanide solution the rate of dissolution is controlled either by the rate of diffusion of dissolved oxygen or cyanide to the gold surface, depending on the relative concentrations of each. There is also ample, but not conclusive, evidence that the mechanism of the reaction is identical to that of electrochemical corrosion. The practical significance of these conclusions will be discussed later in the paper. Experimental The experimental method used in this work was to employ an electrolytic cell which performed the overall gold-dissolution reaction, and to study the anodic and cathodic reactions of this cell as to their nature and the rate-controlling factors. Simple experiments on the rate of dissolution and the potential of the dissolving specimen also were performed under conditions of agitation, temperature, and concentration identical to those used in the electrode studies. Analysis of the electrode studies by well established theories of electrochemical corrosion were made, and the results were found to bear a one-to-one relation with actual rate and potential measurements. Electrode Studies: The Anodic Reaction: The gold specimen used for all of the electrode studies and the rate determination consisted of a sheet of 99.99 + pct Au wrapped around a lucite rod and sealed at the edges with plastic cement, thus forming a cylinder of gold of known and constant area (8.0 sq cm). The lucite rod was threaded into a brass spindle which could be rotated at speeds of 100, 300, and 500 rpm. For the electrode studies electrical contact between the gold cylinder and the brass spindle was made by means of a gold strip covered with plastic. The anodic dissolution of gold was studied by immersing the electrode in a solution containing known concentrations of KCN and KAu(CN)2 but free of oxygen, and by passing an anodic current through the gold electrode. The pH of the solution was maintained between 10.5 to 11.0 in these and all other tests by addition of KOH. The pH was measured before and after each test by means of a glass-elec-

An hcp phase may be induced by cold working the ß&apos; phase of the Ag-Zn system. This phase reverts to ß&apos; on subsequent aging. No phase change occurs on cold working the o phase, but ß&apos; is formed when the deformed alloy is subsequently aged at room temperature. It is concluded that for alloys near 50 at pct Zn the ordered bcc ß&apos; phase is the equilibrium structure at room temperature. WhEN the disordered bcc ß phase of the Ag-Zn system is cooled to temperatures below 258o to 274oC, it transforms to a complex hexagonal phase <o.1,2 The nature of the o ß=o transformation has been the subject of some discussion,2&apos;3 and the structure of o has been described in detail.&apos; The latter phase appears to be stable on aging at room temperature but decomposes following cold work. When alloys containing approximately 50 at. pct Zn are rapidly quenched from the 0 phase field, the ß ? o transformation may be suppressed; but the ß phase undergoes an ordering reaction (ß ? ß&apos;). The ß&apos; structure may also be obtained as a result of cold working and aging at room temperature.4 Kitchingman, Hall, and Buckley4 have suggested that the decomposition of (o following cold work proceeds in two stages, (o ? ß followed by ß ? ß&apos;, but did not confirm this by experiment. When the ordered &apos; phases in the systems Cu-Zn5 and Ag-Cd6 are cold worked, they become unstable and transform to a close-packed hexagonal phase (( ) indicating that when order is destroyed in a ß&apos; structure the close-packed hexagonal phase may in many cases be more stable. It thus became of interest to study more closely the effect of cold work and annealing on the stability of both the ß&apos; and o phases in a Ag-50 at. pct Zn alloy. Predetermined weights of spectroscopically-pure Ag and Zn, supplied by Johnson and Matthey, were melted and cast under 1/2 atm of He in transparent vycor tubing. The ingot was homogenized for 1 week at 630°C and quenched into iced brine. Since mechanical polishing was found to induce a phase change, sections were first polished at room temperature, sealed in tubes under 1/2 atm of He, reannealed for several days at 630o or 200°C and then quenched into iced brine. Sections of the alloy thus prepared were found to be homogeneous when examined under the microscope. The sample quenched from 630°C (ß -phase region) was pink in color, whereas the sample quenched from 200°C (o-phase region) was silver. The latter sample showed the characteristic hexagonal anisotropy when examined under polarized light. Filings of the alloy were examined at room temperature, after various heat treatments, using an RCA-Siemens Crystalloflex IV diffractometer with filtered CuKa radiation. The X-ray reflections from flat powder specimens quenched from 630o and 200°C and sieved through 230 mesh were recorded graphically at a scanning speed of 1/2 deg per min. The resultant patterns are shown in Figs. 1(a) and 1(b) and may be identified as those of the 8&apos; and <02 structures respectively. The lattice parameter of the ß&apos; phase was determined as 3.1566Å.* This value compares very well withthatto be expected for a 50 at. pct Zn alloy from the data of Owen and Edmunds? and indicates that no loss of Zn occurred during casting. In order to study the effect of cold work upon the ß&apos; and o phases, filings made at room temperature and sieved through 230 mesh were mounted immediately in the diffractometer-i.e., without a strain-relief anneal. Changes in structure on subsequent aging were followed by scanning repeatedly over the regions of the low index reflections of the ß&apos; and o structures-i.e. , 28 from 35 to 44 deg. Immediately after filing the 8&apos; specimen, additional diffraction peaks were observed in the low-index region of the pattern, as shown in Fig. 1(c). These additional peaks do not coincide with those of the o structure, Fig. l(b), but may be indexed as the (10.0), (00.2), and (10.1) reflections of an hcp phase (<) with nearly ideal axial ratio. However, this hexagonal phase appears to be very unstable since within a very short time at room temperature it reverts back to the ordered ß&apos; phase, the reversion being complete within seven hours. The 5 ? ß&apos; reversion reaction is, therefore, very similar to those already reported in Cu-Zn5 and Ag-Cd6 7&apos;alloys. The action of filing caused the deformed surface of the originally pink ingot to become silver in color, indi-cating that the ( phase possesses similar reflecting properties to the o phase. The phase changes occurring in low carbon steel during hot strip mill rolling are shown to be metallurgically significant when related to commonly used temperature control points, particularly finishing and coiling temperatures. In combination, these temperatures are shown to have an important influence on the level and uniformity of hardness, grain size, and carbide characteristics of the finished hot and cold rolled sheets. PRODUCTION of wide flat-rolled products ordinarily requires a number of operations in sequence to prepare the material for shipment to the customer. Most products are tailor-made for specific end uses, with each operation contributing certain properties to the finished material. Since the characteristics imparted to the semifinished product by a given step in processing carry through to the finished product in varying degrees, it is important that the intermediate stages of production of flat-rolled strip be carried out with the same care which characterizes the last or finishing operations. The step of hot strip mill rolling is common to the production of all of the various types of flat-rolled product; therefore, the hot strip rolling is an especially important point at which to recognize and control those variables which have an effect on the surface characteristics and metallurgical properties of the finished product and which influence the ease of conducting subsequent operations. Orders entered at a producing mill usually show an end use or describe an article or part into which the ordered product is to be fabricated. Applying his experience as to the properties necessary in a finished sheet to suit the end use and to perform successfully in the fabrication involved, the metallurgist selects a steel of suitable composition and deoxidation practice, and slabs of appropriate dimensions are produced for rolling on the hot strip mill. At this stage of processing, the metallurgist faces the problem of controlling hot strip mill practice in the light of his diagnosis of the properties necessary to meet the end use, paying due attention to the accompanying problem of producing a strip which can meet processing requirements on subsequent units in the mill. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some of the factors which he must consider in solving these problems and to indicate some of the principles which guide him. Equipment, Physical Requirements of the Strip, and Temperature Measurement The metallurgist must, of course, be familiar with the physical layout of the mill, the temperature-measuring equipment available, and the physical requirements of the hot strip product before he can apply his metallurgical knowledge to the problem; hence, the first section will consist of a brief discussion of these matters. The usual hot strip mill consists of reheating furnaces, five or six roughing stands including a scale-breaker, holding table, and second scalebreaker, six-stand finishing mill, runout table with spray cooling facilities, and coilers. A schematic diagram of a typical layout is shown in Fig. 1. Slab temperatures are primarily a function of heating time and furnace temperatures, while mill speeds, spray practice, drafting practice, available water pressure, temperature of the cooling water, cross sectional dimensions of the strip, coil size, and equipment limitations, either singly or in combination, determine what rolling temperatures are practical on a given hot strip mill unit. Thus, it is possible that a set of temperatures which can be utilized successfully on one mill cannot be used on another. However, adjustments in temperatures and rolling practice can usually be made to develop the desired metallurgical properties. In addition to the metallurgical properties developed through proper temperature control, the hot strip mill must also provide strip with certain physical attributes which may be summarized as follows: Strip Cross Section—The strip contour should conform to a section which will give the best results in the cold reduction operation. This is generally recognized as a strip with 0.001 to 0.003 in. crown or shoulder-to-shoulder convexity depending on width, and freedom from concave, flat, or wedge-shaped cross sections which cause metal buildup in cold reduction. Excessive drop off in thickness at the edges can also be very detrimental in cold reducing to light gages. Gage, Width, and Camber—All of these must be controlled. For example, rundown or increasing thickness from the front to the back of the coil results in nonuniformity in the thickness of hot-rolled sheet product and in added difficulty with gage and welds in cold reduction. Similarly, excessive width variation is the cause of guide trouble and excessive edge scrap at later stages of processing, while excessive camber is the source of a variety of processing troubles. Type of Oxide—Product intended for pickling should have a predominance of the type of oxide most easily removable in sulfuric acid. It is generally recognized that this type is obtained by use of maximum table cooling water and cold coiling
