THE annual meeting of the Lake Superior Mining Institute was held on Sept. 7 and 8, Crystal Falls and Iron Mountain, Mich., being the principal centers of activity. Members of both institutes began assembling early, and by the evening of Sept. 6, some 60 had already arrived at Crystal Falls. The greater number arrived the following morning, however, and after the usual formalities of registration were attended to, the party were loaded into automobiles and set out on a tour of inspection of the mines near Iron River; some properties were passed through, and some were briefly visited to permit the inspection of any unusually interesting piece of equipment or detail of practice. The last stop of the morning was at the Caspian, Iron River, where the entire party was entertained at luncheon at the Caspian Club House. Both the food and the company were excellent, and as the weather was superlatively good (though the natives of the district modestly declared it was only ordinary autumn weather) the lunch was served on the lawn at the rear of the club, where the green turf, abundant flowers, and music by the band, added to the charm of good fellowship. The degree to which mining men have become addicted to golf was indicated by the large number of plus fours in evidence, whose wearers appeared just before lunch and disappeared immediately afterward.

WHY should I, a geologist, be coming before you to talk about finding ore? Certainly, the great discoveries of the past have not been made by geologists, but by men of very different tastes and training. If, in the year 1800, the course of ore discovery could have been foreseen, there would have been no reason to put it into the hands of geologists or other men of technical preparation. It was not geologists but explorers, Indian fighters, prospectors, manual laborers, and hardy financiers, who initiated the American mining industry. Then why this association of geological technique with ore finding? Why this feeling that the way to find ore is to apply to the problem what we call geo- logical principles? Well, to put it broadly, the old method has run out on us. It no longer works. Or, to put it another way, the cost of finding ore by the old method has mounted so high that one old district after another has become, practically speaking, dead, and various other old districts that are still going apparently at full strength are actually beginning to limp, and, with the cost of discovery mounting yearly, to fear, more than they will acknowledge, that the end is approaching.

INTRODUCTION Throughout the world, the caving mining methods of ore-draw under the overlying waste rock are sublevel caving in Sweden, block caving in U.S.A. and forced block caving and sublevel caving with sill-pillar in U.S.S.R. These caving methods are of high efficiency, low cost and large production (especially the block caving method) when compared to opencast mining. From the ore production of all under- ground mines, the largest annual production of underground metalliferous mines in the world is caving methods. The sublevel caving in Kiruna Iron Mine of Sweden has reached annual ore production over 20 million tons in 1974. The block caving in Climax Molybdenum Mine and San Manuel Copper Mine of U.S.A. both have produced about 40 thou- sand tons of ore per day in 1971. At the same time, the productivity of Kiruna was 12 thousand tons of ore per man-year, Climax 42.8 tons (48.3 short tons) per man-shift and San Manuel 29.01 tons (32.1 short tons) per man-shift. The main feature of this group of mining methods is the underground extraction of ore from beneath overlying caveable waste rock. Since the loss and dilution of ore are inherent (sometimes to a great extent), the control of ore-draw in these methods as com- pared with other methods is very important. Consequently, concerned Universities and Research Institutes have devoted great amounts of research on ore-draw theory and control management which has provided positive results to mine production, and has apparently promoted the development of the caving methods. During 1979 in China, metalliferous underground mines accounted for 15.22% of the total iron ore produced, while also accounting for 56% of total non-ferrous production. According to the mining methods, sub level caving in the principal underground iron mines counted for about 56.74% of total principal underground iron mine production, but only about 1% of total non-ferrous underground mine production. Relative to forced block caving and sublevel caving with sill pillar, the Chinese non-ferrous under- ground mines estimated about 35% of total non-ferrous underground mine production from these two methods, mainly from the latter. From the trend of development of underground metalliferous mines in China, the percentage of production in caving will be increased in the future, especially in block caving and forced block caving which have already been given great attention in the mining circle. In these types of mining methods the ore is drawn from the stope under a large area of overlying waste rock, which complicates the basic regulation and control of ore-draw, but provides lower loss and dilution than sublevel caving. Because of these reasons, the Kiruna Iron Mine in Sweden is intending to change its sublevel caving by testing a sublevel shrinkage caving method and considering a large area of ore-draw beneath the stope as an advantage. Therefore, the basic regulation and control management of ore-draw under a large area, as practiced in China, will be discussed in this paper. BASIC REGULATION OF ORE- DRAW FROM CAVING STOPE The aim of studying ore-draw under a large area of overlying waste rock is to se- cure a planned draw schedule that guarantees a certain plane of interface between ore and waste rock, and controls the change of its shape in spatial position for reducing ore loss and dilution during the draw process. Presently, the ellipsoid theory is comparatively near the actual attitude of ore-draw from the cave. 1. Ore Drawn Out from Single Drawpoint Laboratory testing and practical experience all show that after a certain amount of ore has been drawn out from a drawpoint, its original shape in the stope before drawing is more or less similar to an ellipsoid, hence the name "draw ellipsoid." This draw ellipsoid is cut at the bottom by a horizontal plane corresponding to the raise of the drawpoint, and its volume can be calculated by the following formula:

Field experience with limestone and sandstone production indicates the existence of wide differences between the reservoir behavior of these two types of formation. Little attention appears to have been given to the separate study of the flow of fluids and the retention of fluids in limestones. This paper presents data and arguments to demonstrate the existence of a difference between the two types of formation, and urges the separate intensive investigation of limestone reservoirs. AH experimental data presented pertain to dolomitic limestone formations in west Texas and New Mexico. Two kinds of Porous media are recognized— intergranular and intermediate. Intergranular rocks are those in which the porosity and permeability are determined by the geometrical properties and the sorting of the sedimentary units; intermediate rocks, those in which there is no direct relationship between grain properties and the porosity and permeability. Limestones in general are intermediate media. The partial relationship between porosity and permeability of any class of Porous media is represelried by an area of .finite extent and definite shape on the permeability-porosity plane. The horizontal and vertical variations of porosity and of permeability in limestone and sandstone formations are discussed and compared. Comparisons are made of connate-water content, the relative permeability-saturation relationship, and capillary phenomena in the two kinds of rocks. A number of tentative conclusions are drawn relative to the reservoir properties of lime- stones; in particular, (I) dolomitic limestones are oil bearing and apparently are oil productive in zones of permeability less than 0.1 millidarcyj and (2) primary depletion (by gas expansion) oil saturations may be lower in dolomitic limestones than in sandstones. Introduction It is well known that the reservoir performance of limestones displays numerous irregularities when compared with that of sandstones, and that the departures from "normal" behavior of limestones are more frequent and generally more marked than in sandstones. This is particularly true of fractured limestones and those that have undergone considerable development of secondary porosity' A review of the literature of production research published during the past 15 years reveals a startling absence of theoretical and experimental investigations directed specifically toward explaining and predicting the performance of limestone reservoirs, even. though such problems as the prediction of water encroachment and the estimation of ultimate recoveries continue at the "inspired guess" stage. By far the greater part of the experimental data reported pertain to measurements on sandstone core samples, while the theoretical studies, almost without exception, are developed from the assumption of an ideal porous medium and therefore seldom are applicable to limestone formations. The chief cause of this situation appears to be the common belief that, to all practical intents and purposes, sandstones and the majority of producing limestone formations

WHEN geophysical methods were first employed in the search for ore deposits and oil accumulations, it was hoped that they would provide a direct means of locating such concentrations. Magnetized needles were used long ago in prospecting for magnetic iron ore, and soon after the discovery of galvanism in about 1790 attempts were made to find concentrations of valuable minerals electrically. Evidence indicating that the early geophyeical instruments were regarded merely as improved divining or dowsing rods is to be seen in the names "mineral finders," "ore finders," etc., that were applied to them. Today, appellations of this kind raise serious doubts in informed minds as to the intelligence and integrity of individuals advocating the use of such euphemistically named methods or instruments, for experience and research have shown that, geophysical, it is never a question of directly locating a given mineral but merely of delimiting its possible occurrence.

The electrical resistivity and the temperature coefficient of resistivity were measured with a potentiometric method using pure mercury as a reference material. Measurements were made nea,v roorn temperature. A detailed study was made of Hg,TI, near its melting temperature. THE work to be described was originally undertaken to provide the necessary data for interpreting the results of some optical experiments,' but because of the growing importance of liquid metals,273 it appeared that the results of the resistivity measurements should be published separately. For convenience the alloys selected were those which are liquid at room temperature. Special consideration was given to the Hg-T1 alloy closely corresponding to Hg,Tl, because recent X-ray diffraction results of Smallman and Frost seemed to show that the solid structure may persist to some extent into the 1iquid. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A potentiometric method was employed in which the resistivity of mercury was used as a reference. The essential features of the samples are shown in Fig. 1. A capillary tube CT with a bore of approximately 1.5 mm was fitted into two end cups, T, which were made of Teflon. A pair of current electrodes CE were immersed into the excess liquid metal which partly filled the end cups. The potential electrodes PE were inserted into CT through short pieces N of a no. 18 hypodermic needle held in place with Saureisen cement SC. As shown, the lower ends of the PE7s were reduced in diameter to 0.25 mm to minimize the distortion of the liquid metal cross section. Several methods were used to insert an alloy into the sample, but the usual one with mercury alloys was to fill the sample container with a weighed quantity of pure mercury* and then add weighed the sample tube in a vacuum. Because of rapid corrosion, samples containing gallium were of necessity prepared in a vacuum. To obtain the specific resistivity of an alloy the resistance of the sample containing the alloy was measured and compared with the resistance when the container was filled with mercury. Resistances were measured in the temperature range of 20" to 60°C to obtain the temperature coefficient of resistance. The electrical measurements were made by connecting the sample in series with the standard one-ohm resistance, and the potential drop measured alternately over the sample and the standard resistance. To correct for stray thermoelectric effects provision was made for reversing the direction of the current, and the true potential drop was taken to be the average of that obtained for the two directions of current flow. Various materials were used for the electrodes, the most uniform results being obtained with nickel. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The numerical results are presented graphically in Figs. 2 and 3 and in tabular form in Tables I and 11. (New York -Meeting, February, 1912.) TORCHES were used by the early Romans for mine-lighting, and these were followed by open lamps or earthen jars filled with tallow or oil, and later by candles. In early coal-mining, explosive gases seldom occurred, and, if they were encountered, the danger of explosion was materially diminished by the absence of any ventilating-system and the consequent insufficient circulation of air to form with the methane an explosive mixture. As the art advanced, the danger of fire-damp became more apparent, and methods for testing the air were resorted to as early as in the fifteenth century. The method of testing consisted in lowering a clog in a, basket down the shaft. As soon as he encountered fire-damp he would commence to howl, after which he was withdrawn, and a leafy bush was fastened to the end of the rope and run rapidly up and clown the shaft. This so disturbed the accumulation of gas as to cause it to rise out of the shaft. Later this odd method of testing was improved upon through the discovery that a light inserted in a body of fire-dam p would produce a blue flame. Candles were used for this purpose, and, when fire-damp was thus discovered, brushing or some other primitive method of fanning was resorted to for driving out the gas. In some instances the gas was burned away, regardless of the danger thereby incurred. A man, wearing a well-moistened coat and a mask with glass spectacles, descended in the mine a few hours before each shift. With a long stick, to which was fastened a burning torch or candle, lie would crawl on the floor with the stick so raised that the light would sweep the roof and ignite the gas which it encountered. The laboratory batch and continuous flotation pilot plant tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of recovering high grade mica concentrates from weathered mica pegmatite ores of Alabama and Georgia. The research indicated that combinations of anionic and cationic collectors may be used effectively for flotation of fine size mica from weathered pegmatite ores. In continuous tests, concentrates containing 98.5% mica were obtained from the Georgia pegmatite ore; the Alabama pegmatite ore concentrates contained 98.4% mica. The recoveries were 91 and 89% respectively. INTRODUCTION The principal uses of fine ground mica are as a filler in wallboard joint cement, as a filler and surface coating for roofing, as an ingredient in paints, and in oil well drilling mud. The mineral has other uses in the manufacture of rubber, wallpaper, plastics, welding rods, electric insulation, house insulation, and textiles, and as an annealing agent in metal treatment. In recent years, more than 99% of the domestic mica produced has been scrap and flake mica (mica which does not meet specifications for sheet mica and is used for producing fine ground mica). There has been a continued increase in mica production for several years, the 1963 production of scrap and flake mica totaling 117,251 tons.1 Ground mica is obtained primarily by crushing and milling pegmatites and schists. To a lesser extent, mica is produced as a byproduct of kaolin washing and feldspar and spodumene flotation operations. The processes used in recovering mica by crushing and milling pegmatites are generally simple, consisting of various combinations of alternate roll crushers and trommel screens that separate the mica and gangue at screen sizes coarser than 6-mesh. As these processes are designed to recover only coarse mica, high losses in the plant rejects are common. Large tonnages of tailings from the crushing and screening plants have been accumulated in a number of areas. Methods for treating such products were developed by the Bureau of Mines in 1941,2 but have not been generally applied. More recently, mica flotation research has been completed and published by the Bureau of Mines.3 These methods required complete removal of 150- to 200-mesh materials from the flotation feed with consequent fine mica losses. Later, the Bureau of. Mines investigated methods for-recovering fine size mica from pegmatite ores after desliming sufficiently to remove clay materials, but not so drastically as to remove the fine sands. This report summarizes the results of these studies. The process developed was effective on pegmatite ores from two locations and should be applicable to the commercial treatment of other mica-bearing pegmatite ores and fine rejects that have been accumulated at various mica-milling operations. DESCRIPTION OF ORES The ores used in the investigation were obtained from the Dixie Mines, Inc., Heflin, Alabama, and the Ruberoid Corporation, Hartwell, Georgia. The sample from Alabama contained muscovite and quartz, with a high percentage of clay, and minor amounts of biotite, kaolin, limonite and tourmaline. The mica in the ore was essentially all minus 4-mesh in size and was free of attached mineral grains. The Georgia sample contained muscovite and quartz, with minor amounts of biotite, kaolin, and limonite. The mica in the ore, which was essentially all minus 4-mesh, was liberated. Petrographic analyses of the two samples are given in Table I. THE ANIONIC-CATIONIC MICA FLOTATION METHOD Previous investigators2,3 have reported that complete desliming of mica ores at 150- to 200-mesh was required prior to flotation with cationic collectors to obtain satisfactory selective separation of the mica from the other mineral components. Numerous tests were made at the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Center to determine if some reagent combination could be used to selectively float finer size mica without complete desliming. For more than 200 years zeolites have been familiar minerals to geologists and mining engineers as minor, but ubiquitous constituents in vugs and fractures of most basalt and traprock formations. More than 35 different species have been recognized including several, such as chabazite, erionite, mordenite, and faujasite, whose adsorption properties rival those of many synthetic molecular sieves. Igneous occurrences of this type have never been mined on a commercial scale; they are generally small and low grade, and they commonly contain as many as four zeolite minerals, along with small quantities of calcite, quartz, and other silicate minerals. Their economic beneficiation to monomineralic zeolite products has also not been achieved and, for the most part, industrial applications of zeolites have relied primarily on synthetic molecular sieves that were crystallized from hydrous aluminosilicate gels. On Monday evening, Oct. 28, 1912, the visiting members and guests were informally received by the Local Committee at the Headquarters of the Institute at. the Hotel Statler. The evening was very pleasantly spent in renewing old acquaintances and friendships and in forming new ones. The first session, held Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 1912, in the impressive Assembly-Room of the hotel, was called to order by David T. Croxton, Chairman of the Local Committee. Mr. Croxton introduced the Hon. Newton D. Baker, Mayor of Cleveland, who extended a cordial welcome to the members and guests present. James F. Kemp, President of the Institute, who subsequently presided at the meeting, responded in behalf of the Institute.

Magnesium, the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust, is found widely distributed in a variety of minerals. Among the more commercially important ones are magnesite (MgCO,), brucite (Mg[OH],) , dolomite (CaMg[CO,],), and the salts magnesium sulfate and chloride often found in natural brines. Among other commercially important magnesium-containing minerals are olivine ([MgFe],- SiO,) , talc (H,Mg,[SiO,],) , and serpentine (H,Mg,Si,O,) . These are valuable because of desirable characteristics given them by the magnesium content and its placement in the particular crystal structure. These minerals are the raw materials for a host of products including magnesium metal and several grades of magnesia or magnesia- containing materials for refractories, fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, and chemicals. Considering only those minerals valued for their magnesia or magnesium content, over 85% of the material tonnages are processed to be used as refractories. Dolomite, which is used in enormous tonnages for its physical properties in construction, has an important use as a refractory raw material in its own right and, after calcination, as a precipitant for magnesium hydroxide, which is an intermediate for the production of magnesia or magnesium metal. Magnesia from the reaction of calcined dolomite (or limestone) with sea-water or magnesium-containing brines has supplanted much of the production of magnesia from mined magnesite, particularly in the United States. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for magnesia content is magnesite, one of the calcite group of rhombo- hedral carbonates which includes calcite (Ca- CO,) , siderite (FeCO,) , and rhodocrosite (MnCO,) among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence, magnesite and siderite form a complete series of which breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well-known end member. However, the radius of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion, and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC0,-Cam, series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but results when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of these relationships is that calcite and dolomite, often found intermixed with magnesite, occur commonly as identifiable crystal entities which can often be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by various beneficiation techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is sometimes, but rarely, found as transparent crystals resembling calcite, but, preponderantly, magnesite contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Magnesite may be either crystalline or "amorphous" (cryptocrystalline). The crystalline form has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color may range from white to black with shades of yellqw, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a fundamentally significant indicator of purity, but in a given deposit, an experienced person can often roughly grade magnesite by assessing color and crystallinity. The ternary system Zr-Cr-0 was investigated at 1200°, 1500°, and 1700°C. The isotherms at these temperatures were determined by metallographic and X-ray diffraction analysis of carefully selected alloys. AS a part of a series of investigations1-4 of the ternary and quaternary phase diagrams on refractory metals and their compounds, the ternary system Zr-Cr-O was investigated at 1200°, 1500°, and 1'700°C. The binary diagrams Zr-Cr, Zr-O, and Cr-0 as reported by Hansen5 and Levin et a1.' and the existence of a ternary coompound ZrsCrsO (q-carbide structure a. = 11.96A) provided a good base for this investigation of the Zr-Cr-O phase diagram. MATERIALS The materials used and their suppliers were: Zirconium powder, 99.4 pct pure, Charles Hardy, New York; Zirconium dioxide, Fairmount Chemical Co., Newark, N.J.; Chromium powder, 99.85 pct pure, Fairmount Chemical Co., Newark, N.J.; Chromium sesquioxide, 99.86 pct pure, J. T. Baker Chemical Co., Pillipsburg, N.J. Though the materials used were not "hyperpure", the impurities present do not affect the results (lattice parameters, phase boundaries) within the experimental accuracy. EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE The detailed procedures and equipment used for this investigation were similar to those described elsewherel' "ith the exception that in this study an induction-heated argon-atmosphere furnace was used. The latter furnace was used to prevent the vaporization of chromium metal in samples in the higher temperature range (above 1200°C). The tungsten crucible was induct ion-heated in a vertical quartz tube filled with argon gas. The quartz tube was 1-1/2 in. in diameter and 10 in. long; it was connected at the top and bottom to water-cooled copper plates. The argon gas of a purity 99.995 pct was further purified by being passed through zirconium metal chips which were maintained at 800°C in a silica tube 1 in. in diameter and 30 in. in length. The furnace was flushed with argon gas for an hour before starting heating; during heating, a slight (3 cm oil) overpressure of argon was maintained in the system. Power was supplied by a 20-kw Ther-Monic Induction Generator. The samples rested on a tungsten-wire basket; the wire basket was connected to a tungsten wire which passed through the tungsten crucible lid, and entered the system on top through a Wilson-type seal. By pulling on the wire, the sample was removed from the crucible and dropped to the water-cooled copper base of the furnace. Because of the presence of argon gas, the cooling of the sample was even more rapid than in the vacuum furnace.' EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1) Isothermal Section at 1200°C. The compositions investigated have been numbered within the phase diagram, Fig. 1, and all the pertinent information about the samples can be found in Table I. The dihedral angle of liquid-lead inclusions in solid nickel has been measured as a function of temperature from 371 to 816 C at zero pressure. and as a function of pressure up to 50,000 psi at 317 and 593 C. Thermodynamic expressions are derived for the temperature and pressure coefficients of interfacial tensions in this system. A method is presented for obtaining relative tempmature and pressure coefficients from dihedral-angle data, and the resulting values are used in conjunction with the thermodynamic relations to calculate excess properties of the solid-liquid interface. Defining the position of the solid-liquid interface by the condition that the excess concentration of lead is zero, the excess concentration of nickel and the excess entropy at the solid-liquid interface are: where y(593) is the interfacial tension of the nickel grain boundary saturated with lead at 593C and zero pressure. These values are considered reliable to within a factor of two. While similar calculations are not possible for the nickel grain boundary, it is shown that the expwimental results imply that the excess concentration of nickel at the boundary and the excess entropy of the boundary are negative. THE temperature and composition dependencies of interfacial tensions in metal systems have been reported by several authors in the last 15 years.'-' No measurements of the effect of pressure on inter- facial tensions in metals have been reported, although measurements made on nonmetallic gas/liquid and liquid/liquid systems suggest that a measurable effect should exist.6-l2 The purpose of these experiments was to determine the influence of temperature and hydrostatic pressure on dihedral angles in the Pb-Ni system. The equilibrium dihedral angle is expressed as a ratio of interfacial tensions by2: where 8 is the dihedral angle, yGB is the Ni-Ni grain boundary tension, and SL is the solid Ni-liquid Pb interfacial tension. Three sets of ex- periments were run to determine: a) the effect of temperature from 371" to 816°C on the dihedral angle at zero pressure; b) the effect of pressure up to 50,000 psi on the dihedral angle at 371° and 593°C. THERMODYNAMICS The properties of interfaces of most direct concern are the interfacial tension, excess concentrations of various components at the interface and the excess entropy of the interface, S°. Pure iron was inductively melted in small refractory crucibles and optical pyrometer and immersion thermocouple readings were simultmzeously taken. The resulting emissivities of the liquid iron surface obtained were found to be greatly affected by both the gaseous atmosphere and geometrical changes in the physical setup. Quantitative values for these effects are indicated. FOR many applications in both the laboratory and plant, optical pyrometry is still the best means of measuring temperatures in the incandescent range. A prerequisite in evaluating the correct temperature is a good value of the emissivity of the surface. To obtain the emissivity from the tabulated values of the literature can be very confusing and often far from correct. There are many reasons for these difficulties, and it is not within the scope of this paper either to enumerate or to discuss them all. Its purpose is to show quantitatively how several factors affect the apparent emissivities obtained from experimental measurements on liquid iron surfaces. The black body is the reference state for the quantitative values of emissivities and is defined1 as a body which absorbs all radiation incident on it, reflecting none; such a surface emits more radiation per unit area per unit time than any surface which reflects any radiation, and is given a value of unit emissivity. All bodies having reflective power thus have emissivities less than unity and are considered nonblack or grey bodies. The ratio of the radiant energy emitted by the flat, nonblack surface to that of a perfectly black surface of equal area and temperature is the emissivity of the surface. The above definitions are applied to flat, polished, opaque surfaces, very seldom encountered in actual measurements, and for this reason many authors have suggested that the word "emittance" be used for real bodies rather than emissivity. The emittance has reference to the material and its configuration rather than to its properties in the idealized state. Recent observations of molten iron in a small refractory crucible indicate that not only the configuration of its surface but the geometrical arrangement of its surrounding and the nature of the surrounding atmosphere have a pronounced effect on the emittance. Neglect of changes in such conditions may lead to errors as large as 40°C at 1600°C. Thus it is suggested that the term "apparent emissivity" be used and that it be recognized that its value pertains to a particular experimental arrangement only. As a result of not recognizing these differences in emissivities, which are obtainable from changes in the physical setup of an observation, many investigators have incorrectly quoted their values as those of the emissivities of particular materials rather than as an apparent emissivity for their particular arrangements. As a consequence, values of the emissivity of liquid iron ranging from 0.3 up to 0.55 are found in the literature.
