The activation energy required to break a pinned dislocation line away from its condensed atmosphere of impurity atoms is calculated as a .function of applied stress, without neglecting line tension. Reasows are presented for not assuming the effect of line tension to be negligible when considering the problem of freeing a small segment of dislocation from an impurity atmosphere. The dislocation is considered to he pinned at each atomic size along its length and the pinning points are assumzed immobile. The development is a refinement of the origznal cottrell-bilby1 theory. A qualitative explanation of the yielding process in terms of the activation of Frank-Read sources is presented, but the lack of a realistic solution to the dynamic dislocation problem involved prevents an extension of the model at present. A self-consistent correlation between the present calculations and experimental data for delay time associated with yielding and the temperature dependence of the upper yield stress was made. Favorable agreement was noted. It is concluded that extension of the original Cottrell-~ilby' theory which includes line tension effects can just as well describe the yielding process as other approximations3,5 which neglect line tension. Cottrell and Bilby found the form of the activation energy vs stress curves to be almost independent of the line energy and the interaction energy (i.e., these parameters only affected the activation energy U by a scale factor). A check of the theory was accomplished by comparison with the experimental data of McAdam and Mebs2 for the lower yield stress as a function of temperature. cottrell,3 in 1957, attempted to obtain a simple closed-form solution for the activation energy as a function of stress by linearizing the quartic equation relating displacement of the dislocation line and applied stress. WITH a brilliance undimmed by hard times, the annual dinner on Wednesday evening, Feb. 17, was a complete success. More than 600 members, friends and ladies gathered early and filled the anterooms of the grand ballroom of the Commodore Hotel, while the president's reception was in progress, and then at the sound of the gong and with the music of the orchestra, rising above the happy din of conversation thronged to their seats at the tables. Following the "potage Ambassadeur"-probably to eliminate a very real hazard-the usual toy balloons appeared and a gay and lively scene, punctuated by multitudinous explosions, ensued, as the hundreds, of variously colored spheres bounced yon and hither until their gaseous existence was ended on the glowing end of a cigar or cigarette. THE time has arrived in our national development when we must have- a definite national- program in the development of our great engineering problems. Our rail and water transport, our water supplies for irrigation, our reclamation, the provision of future' fuel resources, the development and distribution of electrical power, all 'cry out for some broad-visioned national guidance. We must create a national engineering sense of provision for the nation as a whole. If we are to develop this national sense of engineering wand its relations to our great human problems, it must receive the advocacy of such institutions as this. We, together with our sister engineering societies, represent the engineers of the United States. It is our duty as citizens to give voice to those critical matters of national policy which our daily contact with this, the fundamentally constructive profession, illuminates to us. Just as our medical associations voice the necessity of -safeguards to national health; as the bar associations of safeguards to our judiciary, so the engineers should exert themselves in our national engineering policies. We have none; but we need some, or the next generation will face a lower instead of a higher standard of living than ours.

FOR the second time the Mineral Industry Education Division opened the sessions at the Annual Meeting by gathering at the Engineering Woman's Club, Sunday at 3 p. in., and, in spite of the informality of the hour, with a good attendance of representative men in the educational field. The chairman of the Division, Thomas T. Read, after briefly reviewing some of the more significant events of the past year, introduced H. P. Hammond, professor of civil engineering, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, a leading figure in the project of the Engineers' Council for Professional Development for accrediting engineering schools. Prof. Hammond made it clear that the project is not to rate engineering schools but to accredit them; not to arrange them in order of excellence, but to segregate them into two groups, those that are entitled to recognition as genuine engineering schools, and those that are not. About thirty schools in the whole country will presumably fall into the latter class; they are typified by an unnamed institution where the teacher of mathematics bears the title of Professor of Civil Engineering and the man who teaches chemistry that of Professor of Chemical Engineering, and having no engineering instruction except some elementary surveying, but still claiming in its catalogue to be an engineering college. While everyone would like to avoid the necessity of accrediting engineering colleges, it cannot be avoided, since the University of the State of New York, and several other agencies, are already doing it. If it cannot be avoided it is best that it should be done by a qualified agency set up by the national engineering societies, so that the results may command respect and general acceptance. It is for this reason, and this alone, that the accrediting committee of the E. C. P. D. has been set up. It is now ready to begin its task, and during-the coming year it will accredit the schools in two of the seven geographical districts into which the country has been divided, beginning with New England and the Mid-Atlantic States.

IT SEEMS particularly appropriate that the Institute's Regional Meeting should be held in Minnesota this year. Whether we like it or not, we cannot help looking at things now in the light of the World War and the all-out effort we, as a nation, are making to defend our resources, our institutions, and our way of life. The ability to do this lies in large measure in the ability to forge weapons of defense-the machines of war. The basic ingredients of any defense system, or war machine, are the raw materials of industry-iron ore, providing steel for guns, shells, tanks, and warships; coal for stoking the nation's furnaces; oil to furnish power for war planes, ships, trucks, and mechanized weapons; and all the other materials that play a vital role in the operation of modern armies and navies. The tremendous requirements of full-scale defense programs are indicated by the large number of commodities that are now under priorities because the supply is not sufficient to meet both defense needs and all normal civilian consumption. But out of all these items two are of paramount importance-steel and petroleum. In this age no nation can hope to main¬tain a position as a first-class power in the world without a highly developed industry, particularly the heavy industries based on steel, and without access to the necessary resources for those industries. In 1918, 70 per cent of the iron and steel production of the United States was required for defense purposes. In 1940, 15 per cent of our iron and steel production was consumed for defense purposes, and with the acceleration of the defense program, it appears that the proportion of steel output required for defense purposes will reach 40

ThE tendency toward further oxidation of the intermediate oxides and the high volatilization rates of the higher oxides have prevented direct attainment of equilibrium data for the system tungsten-oxygen. As a result, St. Pierre et al.1 have proposed a phase diagram (to 800°C) based on thermody-namic data to 1200°C for the known tungsten oxides (WO2z, W18O49, W20O58, and WO3) and a report on a tungsten suboxide W3O.2 Recent modification of a technique previously described3 5 now permits adequate preservation of compositions of mixtures of metallic tungsten and metal oxides (e.g., of tungsten, cobalt, calcium, samarium, titanium) in order that condensed phase relations may be established to 1700 This method has been applied to study the high-temperature stability of tungsten oxides. In the method used, the desired compositions were sealed in nonreactive containers such that only a small gas volume remained. Each sample then established its own equilibrium atmosphere at temperature. This method has advantages in the study of systems of the W-0 type where knowledge of the condensed phases is desirable but for which composition and pressure of the gas phase are not readily attainable because of oxide volatility. F many years it has been suspected that a correlation existed between pits produced by etching and the density of dislocations in crystals. In 1953, the interest in this correlation was greatly stimulated when Vogel et al' demonstrated a 1:l correlation between etch pits and dislocations in low angle grain boundaries of germanium. About two years ago, the author began attempts to produce etch pits at dislocation sites in zinc mono-crystals. These attempts met with success a year or so ago,' and since that time a survey has been made of the etch pit patterns that are associated with various modes of deformation in zinc monocrystals. Unfortunately, the etching technique that will be described is too delicate for use as an accurate quantitative tool. Nevertheless, it has been of considerable assistance in clarifying the structure of plastically deformed crystals. Technique Many attempts were made to produce etch pits in high purity zinc crystals. It was found that several techniques would produce surface grooves at grain boundaries that had misorientation angles greater than about l°, but no technique was successful for boundaries with smaller angles. Among the things that were tried were: electrolytic CrO, (both etching and polishing concentrations), HNO, in various water and alcohol solutions, dilute HC1, many 0-0,-Na,SO, solutions, Cr0,-HC1 solutions, picral, electrolytic Na,S,O,, and electrolytic NaOH and KOH. A few attempts to use cathodic sputtering and thermal etching were also made.

GEORGIUS AGRICOLA was not only the author of works on Mining and allied subjects, usually asso ciated with his name, but he also interested himself to some extent in political and religious subjects. For convenience in discussion we may, therefore, divide his writings on the broad lines of (1) works on mining, geology, mineralogy, and allied subjects; (2) works on other subjects, medical, religious, critical, political, and historical. In respect especially to the first division, and partially with regard to the others, we find three principal cases : (a) Works which can be authenticated in European libraries today ; (b) references to editions of these in bibliographies, catalogues, etc., which we have been unable to authenticate ; and (c) references to works either unpublished or lost. SUCCESSFUL blast-furnace operation depends upon securing an optimum balance between a number of important variables. This balance will vary somewhat from furnace to furnace in the same plant and with raw materials available in different plants. It is difficult to isolate the effect of any one variable unless it has a rather pronounced effect upon the efficiency of operation. The physical properties of iron ore and coke are known to affect the process, yet it is difficult to set up any definite yardstick by which these differences can be appraised. In recent years, whenever practicable, operators have taken steps to obtain better control over the absolute size and uniformity of size of the ore and coke. The size and physical character of the stone, however, have received comparatively little attention, emphasis being placed upon chemical composition, fluxing efficiency, and action as a desulphurizing agent. Since the stone occupies only about 10 per cent of the volume of the stock column, its influence upon permeability is less than that of the ore and the coke. The large pieces now used have a tendency to roll to the center and thus increase the permeability of this part of the stock column. Smaller pieces would be more effective in promoting the permeability of denser portions of the stock. The size and physical properties of blast- furnace stone are important also for reasons best understood by considering the results obtained by the crushing and the sizing of iron ore. Crushing ore to about 2 in. at Provo, Utah, and to about I in. in Alabama produced material somewhat less permeable to gases, even though sized. In spite of some sacrifice in permeability, the efficiency of the process was improved by crushing and sizing the ore, as indicated by a substantial saving in fuel and increased output. This saving in fuel is due in large measure to more thorough reduction of ore in the upper part of the furnace and to a corresponding decrease in the amount of carbon consumed prematurely above the tuyeres by the reaction CO2 + C = 2CO ? 70,080 B.t.u. [I] The physical properties of stone, its size and rate of calcination are important because they influence the rate at which C02 is released and the completeness of calcination before reaching a level in the furnace where the temperature does not exceed 1050°C. (1920°F.). Briefly, carbon dioxide from the limestone or from the reduction of ore may cause premature com- bustion of carbon above the tuyeres. Assuming that 1000 lb. of limestone is used per ton of pig iron, about 435 lb. of C02 will be liberated during calcination of a good grade of stone. If all this CO2 from the stone were to oxidize carbon prematurely, about 120 lb. would be consumed above the tuyeres in a heat-absorbing reaction. The amount of carbon thus consumed when a

A pilot scale process has been developed to separate mercury, tin, silver, and copper from dental amalgam scrap. Laboratory research led to a process which was operated in 55 gallon drum sized reactors to treat 2000 Tr oz charges of scrap per day. This paper discusses the development work, presents a flowsheet and gives an indication of the equipment necessary to carry out the process on a commercial scale.

The mechanism of two-phase flow in porous media has been a subject of wide controversy. One of the properties essential for understanding the dynamic behavior of two-phase flow is relalive permeability. Relative permeability to a certain phase is defined as the ratio of the effective permeability of that phase to its permeability when it is the only fluid present and powing. In this research, a theoretical analysis was made to determine the effect of viscosity ratio between the non-wetting and the wetting phase on relative permeability. Experimental work was conducted to test the validity of the derived equations. The experiment was conducted on four natural cores. Four oils were used as the non-wetting phases with a viscosity range of 0.42 to 71.30 cp and two wetting phases with a viscosity range of 0.86 to 0.96 cp. Oil and bring were made to flow simultaneously at various ratios, and relative permeability curves were constructed. A total of eight relative pertileability cycles representing eight viscosity ratios were run oil each sample. It was found that relative permeability to the non-~cletting phase varies with viscosity ratio. The relative effect of this variation on relative permeability values was a function of the sample's single-phase permeability, decreasing with its increase. It was concluded that, for .samples of single-phase permeability over I darcy. the effect of viscosity ratio could be disregarded, and relative permeability would be, in effect, a function of satrtration only. INTRODUCTION Two-phase as well as multiphase flow occurs in many fields of science. This type of flow is of particular interest in petroleum production. The knowledge of relative permeability, which describes the dynamic behavior of two-phasc as well as multiphase flow, is essential for solution of problems arising in that field. Thc relative permeability ot a porous medium to a given phase in multiphase flow. is generally considered to be only a function of the saturation of that phase, independent of the properties of fluids involved and ranging in value from zero to unity. Work by Leverett' and Leverett and Lewis' apparently supports this concept. In his experiments Leverett used a clean, packed unconsolidated sand of high permeability (3.2 to 6.2 darcies) with two phases (water and oil) flowing and a viscosity ratio range of 0.057 to 90.0. His results showed that the wide range of viscosity had practically no effect on relative permeability-saturation relationship. Recently accumulated evidence from work performed by several laboratories and a paper by Nowak and Krueger,2 in which relative permeability to oil of a few core samples in the presence of interstitial water was considerably greater than single-phase permeability to water, cast some doubt on the conclusions reached by Leverett' and subscribed to by a large number of individuals in the oil industry. One explanation advanced to explain this behavior states that it is caused by the variable extent of hydra-tion of clay minerals present in the sand. The greater the water saturation, the greater will be the area of contact between water and clay minerals; therefore, the greater will be the extent of swelling with corresponding reduction in permeability. Yuster4 presents another explanation for the recently accumulated evidence. Utilizing Poiseuille's law, he analyzed concentric flow in a single capillary where the non-wetting phase flows in a cylindrical portion of the capillary and concentric with it. The wetting phase flows in the annulus between the non-wetting phase and the capillary wall. The equations obtained indicate that relative permeability to the non-wetting phase is a function of saturation and viscosity ratio. Although Yuster's equations show that fractional rel-ative permeability to oil could be greater than unity, as was indicated by the data of Nowak and Krueger,1 they failed to present an explanation to the experimental data of early investigators such as Leverett.1 Due to the importance of relative permeability in understanding the flow behavior of petroleum reservoir fluids, this work—theoretical as well as experimental —was undertaken to determine whether relative permeability is a function of saturation only as was concluded by Leverett1 or a function of saturation and viscosity ratio as was theorized by Yuster.4 THEORETICAL ANALYSIS An equation will be derived for the rate of oil flow through a porous medium that is initially filled with water. Based on this equation, an analytic expression for relative permeability will be developed. The porous medium will be assumed to consist of .straight circular capillaries of different radii. It will also be assumed that there are no interconnections among the capillaries and no mass transfer across the oil-water interface. The mechanical properties of 300-series stainless steels were investigated in both high-pressure hydrogen and helium environments at ambient temperatures. An auslenitic steel which is unstable with respect to formation of strain-induced a (bee) and € (hcp) mar-tensile is embrittled when plastically strained in a hydrogen environment. A stable austenitic steel is not embriltled when tested under the same conditions. The presence of hydrogen causes embrittlement at the mar-lensitic structure and a definite change in the general fracture mode from a ductile to a quasicleavage type. The embrittled martensitic facets are surrounded by a more ductile type fracture which suggests that the presence of hydrogen initiates microcracks at the martensitic structure. If a steel is unstable with respecl to fortnation of strain induced martensile, plastic deformation in a hydrogen environment will produce rapid embrittlement of a notched specimen in comparison to an unnotched one. FERRITIC and martensitic steels can be embrittled by hydrogen that has been introduced into the alloys, either by thermal or cathodic charging prior to testing.1-5 However, conflicting reports exist as to whether austenitic steels that are stable or unstable with respect to formation of strain-induced martensite can be embrittled by hydrogen.8-12 A recent investigation has shown that cathodically-charged thin foils of a stable austenitic steel can be embrittled.13 An earlier investigation of a thermally charged 18-10 stainless steel revealed a significant decrease in the ductility only at the lowest test temperature of -78°C, although strain-induced bee martensite was shown to be present in one specimen tested at ambient temperatures.' When martensitic steels are tested in a hydrogen atmosphere, they are embrittled.'4-'7 It has been observed in this Laboratory that 304L steel, which is unstable with respect to formation of strain induced martensite, forms surface cracks when plastically strained in a high-pressure hydrogen environment. Work in progress elsewhere concurrent with this investigation has also established that 304L is embrittled when tested in a high-pressure hydrogen atmosphere." The objective of this investigation was to study the effect of a high-pressure hydrogen environment on the tensile properties of a stainless steel that contained strain-induced martensite (304L) and one that did not (310). EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Notched and unnotched cylindrical specimens were machined from 304L* and 310 rods that were heat- treated at 1000°C in argon for 1 hr followed by a water quench. The chemical analyses of these steels are given in Table I. The unnotched specimens had a reduced section diameter of 0.184 & 0.001 in., a gage length of 0.7 in., and were threaded with a 0.5-in.-diam. thread on each end. The notched specimens had a reduced section diameter of 0.260 * 0.001 in. and a 0.75-in. gage length, with a 30 pct 60 deg v-notch at the center. The notch had a maximum root radius of 0.002 in. The tensile bars were fractured in a hydrogen or helium atmosphere of 104 psi at ambient temperatures. The system used for mechanically testing the specimens is to be described in detail elsewhere.19 Several specimens of each type were tested in air using an Instron testing machine. The same yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were obtained in 104 psi helium with the above system as with the conventional testing machine. Magnetic analysis was employed to determine that there was a (bee) martensite in plastically deformed 304L and that it was not present in plastically deformed 310. The magnetic technique depended on allowing the material being studied to serve as the core between a primary and secondary coil. Thus, any change in the amount of magnetic material present between the annealed and plastically deformed steels will be indicated by corresponding changes in the induced voltage in the secondary circuit." The ratio of the output signal of a nonmagnetic stainless steel to a completely magnetic maraging steel was 2000 to I. Several unnotched 304L bars tested in hydrogen were analyzed for hydrogen by vacuum fusion analysis. There was an increase in the hydrogen content to approximately 2 ppm for the specimens tested in hydrogen, as compared to less than 1 ppm for the as-received material. Several thin sections cut from notched areas of 304L specimens tested in hydrogen and containing the fracture surface contained approximately 1.5 ppm H. The accuracy of these determinations was estimated to be ± 50 pct.

NEW economic forces are at work in the petroleum industry.. In order to visualize these forces and clearly see their bearing on the producer, refiner and marketer, it is necessary to see in perspective the economic evolution of the business. For several decades prior to 1913 the outstanding feature of the petroleum industry was a trend toward integration, culminating in a huge combine, the Standard Oil Co. An important aspect of this integrative trend, however, was its concentration on the combination aid control of refining and marketing, leaving crude oil production, for the most part, to the exigencies. of small-unit competition. It is a noteworthy coincidence that during this era the law of oil and gas was formulated and applied, whereby these substances had to be reduced to possession to establish ownership; and the forces of competition in crude oil production were thereby intensified. It was to the interest of an industry, safeguarded in its control of manufacturing and markets, to have supply stimulated by legal convention as well as by individual initiative in order that the growing demand could be met without interruption. And so over-production of crude oil during this era was no handicap, but rather an aid, to the progress of the industry.

DURING the past year the iron and steel industry of the world as a whole operated on a satisfactory basis. No discoveries nor new processes of outstanding importance were announced either here or abroad, although rumors of such were persistent. In general, the efforts of operating and research men in the iron and steel industry seemed to be confined to improving quality and reducing cost, not a new aim, for the same efforts have been noted in nearly all of the annual reviews of the industry for at least fifty years. Most published papers on blast furnace or steel-making practice were of minor importance, at least when judged by the criterion of radical change in process or product. If the number of reports in the technical journals, or articles in the trade press, is used as a basis for comparison, continuous-mill sheet is still the most important single product of the industry; papers were published detailing the results of the investigation of various phases of the

(New York Meeting, February, 1912,) THE earliest example of attempting to form finely-divided materials into larger masses for better adaptation to commercial use was probably the briquetting of peat and lignite-waste at Paris by the use of a clay binder. It was from this attempt that our word briquette has arisen (Fr. la brique), the formed masses being shaped similar to ordinary bricks. This term does not, however, lend itself to the many shapes of such formed material as are now being produced, as few of them aside from some of the European brown-coal products bear any resemblance to the shape of that well-known article. The term "agglomeration " has therefore been chosen as more accurately descriptive of the products now being manufactured, this term including the molding as well as the sintering. With the increasing prices of fuel and ores and the greater demand for economy in the operation of industrial plants, more ,attention has been paid in recent years to the utilization of waste products and low-grade ores and fuels. Much of the waste has been occasioned by the inability to utilize finely ,divided ores and fuels in the furnaces because they could not be kept there, or else because they clogged up the furnace-shaft so that gases could not be forced through under ordinary conditions of operation. As a result, all such fines were thrown on the dump. Again, with the exhaustion of the richer deposits of ores, concentration of lower-grade ores becomes a necessity, and most concentrates are produced in a finely-divided condition. Aside from these considerations, there is also the economy in the cost of operating the plant; a furnace running on agglomerated material will have a much greater output than one working on fines. In one instance the charge of an iron blast-furnace was changed from fine concentrates to briquettes and the output was increased four-fold; better results could have been obtained had facilities been at hand for taking care of the increased output.

Stress-train curves were obtained for single crystals of silver, Ag-5 pct Zn, Ag-10 pct Zn, and Ag-20 pct Zn tested in tension and shear at 78°, 195°, and 297°K. At room temperature the critical resolced shear stress gC increased, the length of' the easy-glide region increased, and the rate of' work hardening dwving easy glide decreased with increasixg zinc concentration. The change in the ratio of uc at room temperature to that at lower temperatures was significantly greater for the alloys than for pure silver. It was found that an increment in stress was necessary to continue slip when the slip direction was rotated 60 deg. The magnitude of this increment increased with strain for all alloys, increased with zinc concentration for a given strain, and for a given strain increased with decreasing -temperature. DESPITE its practical importance in improving the mechanical properties, alloying is not fully understood. Except for copper alloys few sets of systematic data are available. Von Goler and Sachs' studied the deformation of Cu-Zn alloys of increasing zinc content and found that, for dilute alloys, the critical resolved shear stress increases linearly with concentration. The range of easy glide was found to increase with increasing zinc content. Schmid and seliger,2 Sachs and Weerts,3 and Osswald4 have shown that with Mg-A1, Au-Ag, and Cu-Ni crystals, respectively, the critical resolved shear stress also varies linearly with concentration. More recently, Linde and his coworkers have investigated the variation of the critical shear stress of copper alloyed with tin , antimony, indium, germanium, silicon, nickel, and gold. They found that the slope of the critical resolved shear stress is related to the change of lattice parameter with composition, and also to the difference in Goldschmidt's atomic diameter between solvent and solute atoms. Garstone, Honey-combe, and creetham6 have shown that similar relationships can be found for small additions of silver, gold, and germanium to pure copper. They found that, with increasing silver or gold concentration, the critical shear stress for glide is increased by alloying, and so is the range of easy glide, which reaches as much as 60 pct for 0.50 pct Ag alloy and 0.62 pct Au alloy, as compared to 6 pct for pure copper of similar initial orientation. They also found that the alloying additions had little effect on the rate of hardening during easy glide, the slope scarcely changing with increasing alloy content. General secondary slip was detected only when the crystals began to harden rapidly. Although the slip appeared to be very fine in the early stages of deformation, coarser slip bands were formed towards the end of the extensive easy-glide range. The present investigation describes the deformation characteristics of single crystals of Ag-Zn containing different concentrations of zinc. Tension and shear testing were used for this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The method of growing the single crystals, sample preparation, and method of testing have been described in detail previously.' EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Tension-Room Temperature. The initial orientations and stress-strain curves of single crystals of silver, Ag-10.0 pct Zn, and Ag-20.0 pct Zn are shown in Fig. 1. It is evident that there is considerable change in the stress-strain characteristics as a function of zinc concentration. The effects of zinc concentration on the critical resolved shear stress for both CU-zn8 and Ag-Zn alloys are summarized in Fig. 2. At all concentrations the resolved shear stress of the Cu-Zn alloys is higher than that of the Ag-Zn alloys. The resolved shear stress increases parabolically as a function of composition for both alloy systems. The length of easy-glide region increased with increasing zinc concentration, Fig. 3b). As the length increased the slope (do/de) decreased slightly, Fig. 3(b). Metallographic investigations demonstrated two significant effects of increasing zinc concentration. First, the amount of clustering increased, compare Figs. 4(a) and (b). The slip lines changed from uniform in pure silver to clustered in the Ag-20 pct Zn and Ag-30 pct Zn alloys. Second, the amount of cross slip decreased as the amount of clustering decreased.

The constitution of the Ga-In system was determined by thermal methods. An experimentally determined metastable equilibrium line (an extension of the indium-rich liquidus) was obtained. The various alloys were studied metallographically using polished samples obtained by a casting method. These low melting alloys required a special dry-ice assembly to maintain a suitable temperature. RECENT interest in alloys that are liquid at room temperature has led to rather extensive investigation of gallium-base alloys. Widely distributed over the earth, gallium could be produced in substantially larger quantities than at present, if a significant demand existed.' One study' has established its presence in 12 out of 14 zinc blends, in all of 15 aluminum ores, in 4 out of 12 manganese ores, in 35 out of 91 iron ores, and in all of 7 magnetite ores. It occurs as a rule in minute amounts, however, leading to high extraction costs. Recent quotations run from $2.50 to $7.50 per g. During the course of the present investigation, portions of the system Ga-In have been redeter-mined, and the results of this study are presented herein. Thermal and metallographic methods have been employed. Lecoq de Boisbaudran, the discoverer of gallium, conducted the first investigation" on Ga-In alloys in 1885. The temperatures of incipient melting, and of completion of melting, were determined at four alloy compositions. In 1936, Hansen' constructed a eutec-tic-type phase diagram for the system Ga-In, based on . work. The existence of a Ga-In compound was regarded as improbable by Hansen, and subsequent investigations are in agreement. French, Saunders, and Ingle3 conducted a more complete study of the system in 1938, using thermal methods. Their phase diagram is a eutectic type, containing a unique concave-upward liquidus. The solid-solution range of gallium in indium was reported as 9.5 pct by weight, and that of indium as less than 1 pct, at the eutectic temperature. The eutectic composition, determined as being bracketed by the compositions showing a true horizontal at the eutectic temperature (16°C), was reported as 76 5-0.5 pct Ga and 24 i 0.5 pct In. Experimental Procedure The preparation of Ga-In alloys is simplified by the low melting points involved. Various compositions were prepared by melting in pyrex tubes, using a cover of distilled water or parafin to prevent the alloys from wetting the glass wall. In all cases, the melts were homogenized. by stirring. Where possible, both cooling and melting curves were determined. The extensive undercooling of gallium was found to prohibit a satisfactory cooling-curve analysis of gallium-rich alloys, however, and transition points on the gallium side of the eutectic could be determined only by melting curves. The inverse rate method of thermal analysis proved to be most satisfactory and was used to a great extent. Various heating and cooling rates were used, ranging from 0.2" to 5.0°C per min. Low temperature melting analyses were conducted within a constant temperature bath, maintained at about 70 °C. The alloys were solidified (under water or paraffin) within a pyrex tube, using dry ice; the tube was then sealed within a cold Dewar flask, the unit transferred into the constant temperature bath, and periodic temperature readings taken. The high temperature melting-curve determinations and all cooling-curve determinations were made in a vertical tube furnace. At near-eutectic compositions, the furnace was placed within a refrigerated room held at —20°C. Accordingly, the furnace on cooling approached —20°C asymptotically and permitted the determination of those phase transitions occurring below room temperatures. Temperatures were measured with a 30-gage iron-constantan thermocouple, immersed directly in the alloy. To prevent contamination of the melt, the leads and junction were coated with Lucite, applied by painting with a solution of Lucite in ethylene dichloride. Electromotive force measurements were made with a Leeds and Northrup precision potentiometer, type 8662. The couples were calibrated against the boiling point. of water and, at lower temperatures, against a calorimeter thermometer having a Bureau of Standards certificate. The melting points of gallium and indium used in the present investigation were determined as 29.-77° and 156.1°C, in good agreement with previously reported values of 29.78°C° and 156.4"C.' Dislocation substructures in superalloy matrices of varyzng co)npositions have been studied. In general, it has been found that the alloys can be classified into ''high", ''medium", and "low" stacking fault energy classes based on the type of dislocation substructure observed in the matrix and that the substructure can be correlated to the stacking fault energy. The effect of different types of dislocation substructure and dislocation reactions on the intragranulur precipitation of carbide phases has been studied. In a Ni-Cv-Mo-Fe matrix, precipitation of MC carbides in association with stacking faults has been observed. In most superalloys, solid-solution strengthening and precipitation hardening are the chief mechanisms employed to achieve strength. The latter contribution to strength is usually achieved by the precipitation of / in certain wrought alloys. Insufficient attention has been given to the problem of obtaining strength in su-peralloys by controlling precipitation of carbides on imperfections within the matrix. The present work was undertaken to investigate the dislocation substructure in various superalloy matrices, to study the effect of such substructure on subsequent precipitation of carbides in the matrix, and to investigate whether certain modes of precipitation of carbide phases found in austenitic stainless steels2"4'6 would occur in nickel-base alloy matrices with dislocation substructures of the same type as those found in austenitic steels. 1) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Five-pound heats of the various alloy compositions reported here were vacuum-cast. The ingots were given light deformation by rolling to break up the as-cast structure and then homogenized for 24 hr. HASTELLOY alloy X (nominal composition: Ni-2OCr-17Fe-8Mo-0.05C) was homogenized at 2150°F and In-cone1 625 (nominal composition: Ni-20Cr-5Fe-8Mo-3.5Cb-0.05C) was homogenized at 2280°F. Fabrication of 0.004-in. sheet was achieved by cold rolling with intermediate annealing treatments being carried out at the same temperature as those used for homogeniza-tion. Each solution anneal was followed by quenching. The aim of this procedure was to redissolve as much of the primary carbide phase as possible. Samples of the 0.004-in. sheet were cut and encapsulated in quartz capsules and then heat-treated in the tube furnaces. Thin foils were prepared using an ethanol-10 pct perchloric acid bath at 32°F and at a voltage of 22 v. A "window" technique was employed. Observations were made on a JEM-7 electron microscope operating at 100 kv. 2) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS a) Types of Dislocation Substructure. Fig. 1 shows a schematic correlation between stacking fault energy, SFE, and the type of dislocation substructure observed in various matrices of nickel- and cobalt-base alloys. A precise quantitative determination of stacking fault energy is not implied in the figure but the correlation between stacking fault energy and the type of dislocation substructure obtained allows alloys to be divided into three classes in analogy with the classification employed by Swann and ~uttin~' for binary alloys of copper. Class I alloys are associated with a "high" SFE and show a cellular substructure of dislocations as typified by the micrograph of a thin foil of pure nickel deformed 4 pct at room temperature in Fig. 2. With decreasing SFE the tendency toward cell formation is lessened and dislocations tend to be arranged in coplanar groupings. Examples of this class of alloys with "medium" SFE are provided by the mi-crostructure of solution-heat-treated, quenched, and deformed thin foils of HASTELLOY alloy X, "Waspaloy" (prior to any aging), and Inconel 625. Fig. 3 shows a thin-foil micrograph of an alloy of Inconel 625 composition, solution-heat-treated, quenched, and deformed 5 pct at room temperatures. No evidence of any cell structure can be obtained in materials of "medium" stacking fault energy, Fig. 3, even after severe deformation. The stacking fault energy of the alloy shown in Fig. 3 is, however, not low enough to make the dissociation of dislocations visually obvious. As stacking fault energy decreases further, with successive addition of solute in the matrix, there is an increased tendency toward dissociation of dislocations and cross slip becomes progressively more difficult. Eventually, when the stacking fault energy is "low" enough, complete dissociation of dislocations is seen to occur as shown in Figs.
