A process that has come to be known locally as "multistage stabilization" has been developed in the Haft Kel field of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. in southwest Iran, for the recovery of casinghead gasoline. It consists in releasing the dissolved gases from the crude by stages, a practice common in many fields, but which, so far as is known, has nowhere been carried to the extent to which it is employed in Iran. It has been in use there for nearly nine years, during which time some 200 million barrels of crude have been handled by the process. This process of gasoline retention consists in preventing the greater part of the casinghead gasoline hydrocarbons (the butanes and pentanes) from ever leaving the crude, instead of allowing them to be vaporized and then recovered from the lighter gases by the usual compression or absorption processes. Its efficiency is fully equal to that obtained by the absorption process; its disadvantage is that it increases the quantities of ethane and propane in the crude sent to the refinery, but with the growing demand for propane this drawback is vanishing. When casinghead gasoline is recovered as a separate liquid in the Iranian fields, it is blended with the crude, as the only outlet is through the refinery, and the crude-oil pipe line offers the cheapest means of transportation. It is under these conditions that the retention of the butanes and pentanes in the crude by multistage stabilization is a most attractive process, possessing as it does the following advantages: (1) extreme simplicity, (2) low first cost, (3) easy installation! (4) practically 100 per cent operating-time efficiency, (5) no operators required, (6) no water or other services required, (7) negligible maintenance, (8) once established, very little routine testing is necessary. The one essential for reasonably efficient multistage stabilization is that the flowing pressures of the wells should be relatively high; i.e., they should not be less than about one-third the saturation pressure of the crude in the reservoir. This is a very general statement, of course, and much depends on the type of crude and its temperature.

In recent years bismuth telluride has received considerable attention, primarily due to its value as a thermoelectric material. Since there seems to be little dependence of thermoelectric effect upon crystal orientation1 many of those who have previously worked with this material have been unconcerned with knowing its crystallographic angles to any degree of accuracy. However, when one studies deformation modes, lattice stresses, or the aniso-tropy of mechanical properties of a material, knowledge of the interplanar angles and their relationships as depicted in a stereographic projection becomes essential. Lange2 originally published crystallographic data which described the structure of bismuth telluride as rhombohedral with the space group A more recent work by Francombe3 presented data which corroborated and refined the original findings of Lange. In addition, Francombe established that there is no coexistence of rhombohedral and hexagonal lattices in bismuth telluride as was suggested by Vasenin and Konovalov,4 and that the structure can be treated as a pseu do hexagonal structure with an axial ratio, c/a, of 6.95 for convenience of presentation and study. The interplanar angles and standard projections for several unalloyed hexagonal metals have been previously published,5-9 but the present work appears to be unique in that it presents data for a rhombohedral compound in pseudohexagonal form. As a pseudohexagonal structure, this material has an extremely large axial ratio as compared to the usual range of approximately 1.5 to 1.9 for the hexagonal metals. So FAR as the elementary composition of petroleum is -known, it may be briefly stated. Petroleum consists principally of a few series of hydrocarbons, with admixtures of sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen derivatives in comparatively minute proportions, which may be regarded as impurities to be removed in the preparation Of commercial products. But as each series is represented by many homologs, in the aggregate, crude petroleum is an extremely complex mixture of hydrocarbons and their derivatives. In part, these hydrocarbons individually conform in structure to the system of synthetic hydrocarbons whose structure is well defined and -represented by the typical series CnH2n+2, CnH2n, the series CnH2n-2, CnH2n-4, the members of which have not been sufficiently studied to establish their structure, and the series CnH2n-6 composed of the aromatic group, benzene and its homologs. Hydrocarbons of greater density contained in the portions of petroleum that cannot be distilled without decomposition doubtless have less hydrogen than is represented by these formulas. Since to every hydrocarbon there is a definite temperature, even in vacuum, at which its constituent carbon and hydrogen atoms fall apart, and since for the heavier bodies this temperature is not much above 360° C. in vacuum, it is evident that some other method than distillation must be devised for their separation if anything further is to be learned concerning their individual constitution. CLASSIFICATION OF PETROLEUMS There is such a wide variation in the composition of petroleum from different fields, it would seem possible to make a classification on this basis were it not that no single variety is entirely free from hydrocarbons contained in others. I. INTRODUCTION. AMONG the industrial enterprises which have, from time to time, been undertaken in our Dominion, few have been more uniformly unsuccessful than those which have had for their object the development of our mineral resources. These resources have not been regarded as insignificant. On the contrary, it is supposed that we possess in our ore deposits something more than mere points of mineralogical interest. Some people are enthusiastic enough to believe that our mineral wealth will yet occasion the establishment in our backwoods of happy and industrious communities, causing, in fact, our wilderness to blossom as the rose. These enthusiasts do not shut their eyes to the serious obstacles which at every stage interfere with the carrying out of mining enterprises in this country, and which tempt one to believe that no such enterprise can ever be conducted to a desirable end, but they entertain the conviction that as our capitalists, miners, and technologists reach the years of discretion, and handle our mines in an economical, vigorous, and judicious manner, and as our statesmen become alive to the necessity of fostering, without extremely protecting, our metallurgical industries, mines and furnaces will gradually prosper, and so develop as to become a tower of strength to our agricultural, manufacturing, and mercantile interests. The fact that our past experience does not generally justify such glowing anticipations makes one all the more anxious to put on record the history of a successful mine, such as the Silver Islet has, on the whole, been. My connection with its discovery and early development was a very intimate one, and I propose in this paper to sketch its history and character, and sum up the amount of silver it has so far yielded. An additional reason for the appearance of this paper is that the Transactions of the Institute contain only a few references to the Silver Islet Mine. Although this mine is reported successful, we have, of course, no guarantee that it will not fall a victim to the same influences which have

The tank car price of gasoline today is controlled by oil in the ground, rather than by stocks of gasoline or methods of refining. Previous to the commercial cracking of fuel oil, there was a normal and continuous relation between gasoline stocks, consumption and prices. From the beginning of the new cracking era in 1923 to the summer of 1926 there was a changing relationship, growing toward a correlation between the potential gasoline in storage and the price of gasoline. Since the development of large reserves of shutin production in Wyoming, California, Seminole, West Texas and Venezuela, the relationship between stocks of gasoline and gasoline prices has disappeared. The extreme depression of the Group 3 price can only be accounted for by oil which is not being produced but which we fear may be produced at any time. In Fig. 1, the curve of gasoline stocks is simply stocks of finished gasoline. The curve of potential gasoline is made by taking 40 per cent. of all stocks except gasoline, kerosene and lubricants, adding to that stocks of finished gasoline and dividing the sum by total gasoline con-sumption to get the months' supply of gasoline at the current rate of consumption. The price curve is the lower figure given by the National Petroleum News for the first quoted date of each month, with the price scale reversed. Stocks of potential gasoline have decrrased from 17 months' supply at the peak of 1924 to a low of 7 months' supply during the past summer, yet the low immediately precedes the lowest price for gasoline since it was a waste product. The tendency of the price curve to parallel the curve of potential supply is quite pronounced until the summer of 1926, since which time they have abruptly separated. The curve of gasolinct stocks is equally remarkable in relation to price when it is considered that total consumption for the year 1927 is almost exactly twice that of 1924. Clearly a new factor has been introduced. There is no possible factor to account for this distortion except known reserves of oil in ground storage, and therefore, until such time as the Bureau of Mines or the

THE eleven mines of the United States Coal and Coke Co. in the Pocahontas coal field are situated in McDowell County, W. Va., which is a mountainous region. The valleys rarely exceed 200 ft. (60 m.) is width, the hill sides slope from 25° to 33°, and the tops, from 600, to 900 ft. above the valleys, carry practically no level land. At least 80 per cent. of the area is covered with timber. All the workings are drift mines; and while the average grades of the seams worked are ample for drainage, local dips and swamps necessitate, the use of a large number of local pumps or of numerous drainage ditches to keep the mine free from water during heavy rains. The water handled in any mine is not great, compared with the coal output, and usually causes little trouble except during extremely wet periods. In hew workings, the water encountered, except in rare cases, is trifling; it is only after rib drawing has started and the surface has been broken that water troubles begin. The strata overlying the coal are sandstone, shales, and slates; as the soil is thin and sandy, it does not tend to puddle and stop the cracks, which remain open for a long time. As mining progresses and the robbed area increases, the broken area becomes larger, increasing the openings into the mined territory. The cover over the robbed portions of the mines varies from 30 to 750 ft. (9 to 228 m.). When the ground is saturated, considerable water finds its way into the mines the day after a heavy rainfall and for three or four days it tends to fill the low places, wash the tracks, etc. and. unless from three to four times as many pumps are installed as are normally needed, considerable', output is lost. In most cases the water will .flow from the mines, so the obvious solution is to provide drainage .ditches of ample size to carry the maximum flow expected, so that the inflow will have no opportunity to flood the working places.

Data pertaining to pipe line flow for both oil and gas in horizontal or nearly horizontal pipe lines are both extensive and accurate. However, the pipe formulas used to determine pressure drop for flowing fluids (liquids and gases) under conditions of horizontal flow are not generally applicable to flowing oil and/or gas wells. Except for some data developed in small laboratory set-ups, little or no information was available concerning flow of oil and gas mixtures in vertical pipes, when, in 1928, the writer began the development of a method for computing pressure drops in the pipes of flowing oil wells, as outlined in this paper. In 1929, Urenl presented some findings based on laboratory experiments in which vertical flow of an extremely heavy crude oil was induced by means of air through a 2-in. pipe, 41 ft. long. The friction factors derived from the experiment, as well as values for pressure drop per 100 ft., are not believed satisfactory in their application to flow problems in the field. Versluys,2 also in 1929, presented a mathematical development of the theory of flowing oil wells, and in 1930, gave a companion paper3 setting forth some principles governing the choice of length and diameter of tubing in oil wells. Since the termination of the study presented in this paper, another valuable contribution pertaining to the problem of vertical flow was made by Moore and Wilde.4 Although there were writings dealing with the principles of the gas-lift, a search of the available literature indicated that specific information on vertical flow was lacking with the exception of the writings of Uren, Versluys, and Moore and Wilde, to which reference has been made.

THE manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In. certain respects, they strongly resemble those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia. Viewed from the present condition of the maganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments; youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide of both areas. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate amount of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flow's largely of basic types. To this series I have given the name Birrim. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. As the characteristics of these non-fossiliferous strata at many places are the same as those of strata in many parts of the world that are suitable for the preservation of fossils and that contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim series have normally a northeast-southwest strike and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts. From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed across their strike for more than 600 miles to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence they probably extend much further into French Territory.

THE mineral graphite has been known for hundreds of years and was first used commercially as a coloring agent. Its true identity, however, was not recognized until the end of the eighteenth century and its commercial development did not become extensive until near the close of the nineteenth century. The common names for this mineral are graphite, plumbago, and black lead; others less frequently used are potelot, crayon noir, carbo mineralis, and kish. Graphite was named by Johann Gottlieb Werner in 1789 from the Greek word graphein, to write, and this name was applied primarily to the large crystalline, flake variety. Plumbago is a trade term used primarily for massive graphite as found in Ceylon. Black lead is also a trade term and, like plumbago, is based upon the idea that prevailed throughout the Middle Ages that graphite was a form of lead, or at least contained that metal. Graphite is a soft, black, unctuous form of carbon that crystallizes in the hexagonal system with rhombohedra1 symmetry. It occurs occasionally in six-sided tabular crystals but usually is found in foliated masses, minute disseminated scales, or earthy lumps. It has perfect basal cleavage, is gray to black, has a metallic luster and a gray streak. The specific gravity is 2.1 and hardness is 1 to 2. It is opaque even in finest particles; extremely resistant to the action of acid or heat; and a good conductor of both heat and electricity. Graphite may be separated into three classes: ( ) natural, (2) manufactured (which is sometime called artificial), and (3) colloidal. Natural graphite is divided into two classes, "crystalline" and "amorphous." Crystalline graphite may occur as flake, lump, chip or dust. Amorphous graphite is a commercial term only, as all graphite is crystalline, but grades in which the individual grains cannot be distinguished are classified by the trade as amorphous. Natural mixtures of crystalline and amorphous occur in all proportions. The term "artificial graphite" is a misnomer; "manufactured graphite" is a better term, because it actually is pure crystalline graphite,

EIGHT years ago in this department we had a column on the daiquiri cocktail, which, as we pointed out at that time, was invented by mining engineers. Since then we have said little or nothing about alcoholic drinks, but having set the precedent perhaps we may now pass along a little information about martinis. We have observed that as an aperitif the martini has become increasingly popular with men, so much so that we always feel a bit peculiar if we order something else. And the call is not for just a martini either; it must be a dry martini, and some of our friends are extremely particular on this point. The matter has achieved such importance that The New York Times devoted half a page to it a few Sundays back. Several recipes are given which may be useful to some of our members when entertaining visitors from this part of the country: The standard martini is said to be half gin, half Italian vermouth, two dashes orange bitters, and a pickled onion and twist of lemon peel. This progresses to the very dry martini, which calls for five parts gin and one part vermouth with an onion, olive, or lemon peel. Several alternatives are offered for the manufacture of the very, very dry martini. One is to pour a little vermouth into the mixing glass and pour it out again before mixing gin and ice. A second way is to put the ice in a sieve, hold it over the sink, and pour a little vermouth over it; then put the ice in the mixing glass. A third is to let the draft from an electric fan blow across an open vermouth bottle toward the mixing glass. Then the ultimate is the awfully dry martini, obtained by setting the vermouth bottle next to the mixing glass and turning the bottle slowly so that the label is exposed to the gin for perhaps a second. The Times notes that Mr. Martini himself personally prefers vermouth and soda.

IN the preceding chapter on thermochemistry and the reactions in and between metal and slag phases and in the following chapter on fuel combustion the main emphasis is placed on the equilibrium or "static" conditions. This equilibrium viewpoint is not concerned with the rate of change in the process or with the mechanisms or paths followed between initial and final states. The questions of just "how it works" and "how fast" belong to the kinetic aspect of any process; their answers are helpful in speeding up or slowing down and thus controlling its operation, and also in understanding its limitations. Any treatment of kinetic factors in the open hearth such as is attempted here and in Chapter 22 must at present be largely qualitative and incomplete. We are only beginning to get quantitative data on rates of reaction and diffusion at high temperatures, as indicated in Chapter 15. Empirical data in the literature on furnace operating rates do not help much to illuminate the details of gas-flow patterns and the complexities of heat flow in the many parts of the furnace system. This chapter is intended to give the reader an introduction to the problems of the flow of gases through the furnace system and the flow of heat in this system. An adequate discussion would require several times the space available here; it is possible here only to outline a few fundamentals and to indicate some of the conditions of heat and gas flow peculiar to the open hearth. Several good general treatments of these subjects may be found in the literature (see references at the end of the chapter). For the designer of open-hearth furnaces, the principles of gas flow are of paramount importance. They are also important to the operation of the process, at least to the extent of a general qualitative picture of the movement of gases in the system. A Discussion at a meeting of the New York Section, Dec. 2, 1914 D. H. BROWNE.-If 35 years ago we had met to discuss the subject that is before us to-night, the criticism that we must all be mad or we would not be here at all would have been perfectly applicable. No group of men would have come together a generation ago to discuss the subject of smelting ores without extraneous fuel, or largely by the oxidation of their own impurities, without incurring the imputation of being crazy. But metallurgy, like all other branches of human industry, progresses by idealism. In every generation there are old men who see visions and young men who dream dreams. Thirty-five years ago John Hollway conceived the idea that in the Rio Tinto ore the sulphur and iron, if properly oxidized, could be made to produce heat enough to carry on the smelting of the ores. He saw the vision. Twenty-five years ago Mr. Austin, of Montana, took out a patent on a furnace in which to carry out Hollway's ideas. He dreamed the dream. Twenty years ago a man working in Montana grasped the possibilities of this idea. To him has been given that inexpressible pleasure which comes from realizing the idea and making the concept concrete. Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to introduce to you the man who made the ideal real, Robert Sticht, of Tasmania. ROBERT C. STICHT, Queenstown, Tasmania.-I find it extremely difficult to act up, in the smallest degree, to the enconium passed upon me by Mr. Browne. It is true it has been my good fortune to be able to put some sort of method into the "madness" of 25 years ago; but I am not the originator of the idea, nor the only one who has carried it out. Mr. Browne mentioned the originator, who undoubtedly is Mr. Hollway. He also mentioned Mr. Austin, who gave the first instigation to pyrite smelting as now practiced. As against both of these men I was fortunate enough to be able to command the necessary natural resources to carry out the idea continuously in a practical way, so as to make it permanently possible.

For a very brief description of the North Texas area, and the general geological features with which it is associated, the reader is referred to the opening paragraph of last year's summary1. A more complete discussion of the structure of the area, together with other interesting data concerning it, has been published recently by the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas2. It has been impossible for the authors to isolate the statistics for production for each of the many small pools of this district, as such statistics are not kept by operators except by counties or arbitrary divisions of counties. The total number of wells drilled in Archer, Wichita and Clay counties also has been subject to some estimate, as many of the shallower holes are not reported. While both routine development in proven or semiproven areas and exploratory drilling during 1935 showed an increase over the year 1934, the discovery of new producing areas of importance did not show improvement over that period. Several extremely local productive spots within semiproven areas were found in Archer, Cooke and Wilbarger counties; and extensions to older producing areas were developed in Archer, Baylor, Cooke, Montague, Wichita and Wilbarger counties. In Archer County, the Grace and Woods No. 1 Archer County (Fee), 4 miles northwest of Archer City, in the Thomas Glass survey, encountered a sand from 2836 to 2845 ft. of Pennsylvanian (lower Canyon) age, which showed an initial yield of 75 bbl. daily. While its production is of negligible importance, it is given special mention in this review because of the fact that it is producing from a new and deeper horizon than has been previously exploited in the county. Little deep development occurred in the district during the year. The Walter Gant No. 2 C. M. Worsham in J. M. Swisher survey, about 14 miles east of Henrietta, in Clay County, was abandoned at 5127 ft. in

FOR many years, the belief that the so-called "Clinton" sand of Ohio might produce. oil and gas, if it could be reached, has been prevalent in West Virginia. To test this theory, many hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent and several extremely deep wells, including the deepest boring of the world, have been sunk at various points. With the exception of one well now completed through the sand and the possible exception of another still in progress, all of these wells failed to reach the goal, either through failure of funds or through drilling accidents. REVIEW OF DEEP DRILLING The subject of deep-sand oil and gas in West Virginia has already been discussed by the author1 and by White.2 In these papers, it was shown that the Upper and. Middle Devonian shales, lying between the Berea oil sand (basal Mississippian) and the Oriskany sandstone (Lower Devonian), thicken steadily from eastern Ohio across northern West Virginia and Pennsylvania; but it was stated that the same rate of thickening did not occur in that part of West Virginia south of the Great Kanawha River and in the adjoining portion of Kentucky. In spite of this great eastward thickening, the fact that both the Oriskany and "Clinton" sands, the latter of which is equivalent to the White Medina of New York, exist in great thickness all along the Appalachian Mountains farther east, was held as proof of their probable presence in the deep Appalachian basin.

THE crystal laboratory, Dept. of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was confronted with the problem of obtaining a supply of optical grade calcium fluoride (CaF2) for use in growing synthetic CaFe2 crystals. A search of the known fluorspar deposits did not indicate that any quantity of optical spar could be obtained. Even the best material had to be sorted by hand to remove impurities. The process for growing CaF2 crystals developed by Professor D. C. Stockbarger of the Dept. of Physics, M.I.T., necessitates very pure feed materials. Exclusion of impurities is required, even in amounts detectable only spectrographically. The impurities occurred as minute inclusions of SiO2, BaSO4, CaCO3, FeS2, water or air. Crystals up to 4 in. in diam and weighing several pounds are made by the Harshaw Chemical Co. in Cleveland. Since the time required to grow a 4-in. crystal is about one week, and since the cost of manufacture is high, removal of impurities by any concentration method appeared practical. The mineral engineering section of the Dept. of Metallurgy undertook to investigate the possibility of concentrating clear optical fluorspar, -4 mesh +10 mesh, from a feed containing over 99 pct CaF2. Various innovations of the known methods of concentration were considered, but in each case the minute amount of impurities associated with the crystal produced such extremely small differences

This investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of Prof. Henry M. Howe, of the Department of Metallurgy, Columbia University, who, in a letter to the author, dated October 23, 1900, wrote as follows, suggesting the subject of this dissertation : "The extraction of silver from copper mattes by either the Ziervogel or the Augustin process depends upon converting the silver into silver sulphate by means of the sulphuric anhydride evolved from the decomposition of ferrous sulphate and cupric sulphate, which are formed during the roasting operation itself from the iron and copper sulphides present. "It occurred to me, some time prior to the autumn of 1897, that these processes might be made much easier by adding to them, at the proper stage, ferrous or cupric sulphate, or both, in the form of green or blue vitriol. That is, instead of having to rely solely on our ability to generate these sulphates in this very delicate roasting operation, my idea was that we could add a small quantity of already-prepared sulphate at the proper state of roasting, viz., at or before the period when the solphatizing of the silver occurs. The comprehensive audit of the accounts of a mining company is extremely important in its relations to the legal situation and obligations of the corporation, the personal liability of the directors, and the interests of the investing public. A consideration of the subject as affecting the professional duties and fixing the responsibility of a mining engineer engaged in the expert examination of a mine or in charge of mining operations, is equally important, though this phase of the question is not often presented systematically.

During fifty-three years of mining operations in the Warren mining district, the mineralization has been found to cover an area roughly 2 miles long by 155 miles wide. Ore extraction from the richer portions of this area has been closely followed by surface subsidence. At the western end of the district, where the ore outcrops at the surface and oxidation is more complete over a wide area, intense surface disturbance is visible in the form of closely spaced open cracks and escarpments. As work has progressed toward the east, more unoxidized ore-bodies have been found and mining has been at increasing depth, for which reasons surface subsidence is less intense and subsidence blocks become larger and in general are bounded by open cracks, which persist over long distances. There may also be traced on the surface what appears to be a boundary crack, running in a northwest-southeast direction, marking the present southerly limit of subsidence of the district as a whole. It is not completely developed, and has not as yet appeared over the very deep mining operations in the extreme easterly portion of the district. Check surveys show that vertical and horizontal dislocation is still taking place. All of the various mining operations, including open-pit work in porphyry ore and underground mining of limestone replacement and porphyry ores, have had their influence in disturbing the surface. As these influences frequently overlap, and because the surface disturbance is continuous over practically all ore occurrences, it is virtually impossible to choose an area sufficiently isolated to ascribe the amount of subsidence to any definite volume of ore removed. After due consideration of all factors, there has been selected for discussion an area 1400 ft. long by 1200 ft. wide, which will be referred to as the Queen Hill block. It is bounded on all four sides by faults, which tend to limit subsidence disturbance to that caused by ore mined from within the block, and likewise to prevent subsidence cracks due to mining outside of the block from entering the area.

Troughs or launders are probably the oldest machines used for ore concentration, and their development was suggested no doubt by the natural segregation and stratification of materials that take place in the bed of a stream. Trough washers for coal cleaning were first used in France and Germany about one hundred years ago and have been used in some form or other ever since. The early launders were intermittent or batch machines, and only comparatively recent developments have made them continuous. The chief disadvantage of early launder systems as applied to coal has been that when a satisfactorily clean coal was produced the loss of good coal in the refuse was excessive. Other disadvantages have been the large quantities of water and the great lengths of troughs necessary to treat moderate tonnages of feed. One of the most widely used types of trough washers is the Rheolaveur, which has been developed in the last 25 years. Fig. 1 shows a more or less standard arrangement for fine coal. In this there are four trouglis placed one below the other and sloped a few degrees from the horizontal. Rheo-boxes or draws are provided at intervals in the bottom of the trough for the removal of material deposited from the stream. These draws are spaced substantial distances apart. Some of the rheo-boxes are provided with upward currents of water to modify the horizontal current stratification. In operation it is the function of the first two troughs to remove all refuse material and permit only clean coal to be discharged over the end. In order to accomplish this, large quantities of coal are drawn through the rheo-boxes. The third and fourth troughs are used to recover the coal discharged through the boxes of the first two troughs as a middling product and to discharge a clean refuse. The middlings are returned to the first launder and are usually about equal to 40 per cent of the raw coal being fed to the launder. In considering launder processes, one would reason that the conditions of extreme crowding under which stratification takes place in a flowing stream should effect complete separation in a single pass down a launder.
