Minerals: When man first picked up an appropriately shaped stone and fastened it to a stick of wood to create a primitive axe or hammer he started down the long road of mineral dependency that has continued until today (Fig. 2). Though he did not realize it, that man and his stone axe created an extremely simple form of mineral economy. The struggle against extinction from that day has been fought with minerals. In addition to providing himself with a means to fight for survival, he also exhibited an increase in intelligence. As his curiosity was stimulated, his ability increased to provide himself with better mineral and metal weapons and tools. Today, when we examine the artifacts of past civilizations, we measure the degree of development that had been attained by the variety of metals and minerals possessed and how they were used. The metals employed are so characteristic of the level of intelligence that we have named the various stages of human progress by the metals that were most commonly utilized. Thus, mall went through the Stone Age, the 13ronze Age, the Iron Age and now has reached the Steel Age. The first period of mineral development, the Stone 4ge, began during late Pliocene time. In this first mineral age, prehistoric man began to shape stones by chip- ping off small pieces until the stone assumed the crude form he wanted. IN the last analysis, two basic factors influence the use of metals and alloys; namely, cost and adaptability to the use under consideration. These are so interrelated that to study the properties of metals or alloys without considering the prices and price trends is quite illogical. Lead has been a cheap metal, selling in 1932 for the extremely low price of 2.56 cents per pound. The cheapness of lead in the past was not due to a particularly abundant supply of the element in the earth's crust but rather to the ease with which it was won from its ores and to the chemical stability of the metal, preventing its dissipation. Today, however, our modern economy has caught up with the distribution of lead in the earth's crust and the price is largely dictated by the supply of concentrates readily available for smelting, and which can be placed quickly upon the market. The demand for lead, particularly in times of stress, has brought the price up to the level of 19 cents in the United States, where the price is controlled by Government decree, and the price has been even higher in the world markets. The higher price for lead has changed the uses for this metal to a marked degree, driving it out of the fields where it is not essential. The Province of British Columbia covers 382,000 sq. mi., about 250,000 sq. mi. of which have not been prospected. In fact, the coast country and the islands are so heavily timbered and the surface covered with so thick a mantle of soil, muskeg, and, over broad areas, glacial drift, that prospecting and even trail breaking are extremely difficult. It is only along the coast or stream channels, or above the timber line, or where snow or rock slides have scoured the surface, that rock outcrops can be found. Glaciers nestle in many of the cirques and fill the valleys in the higher ranges. Great ice sheets and perpetual snow persist in certain localities, thus reducing the exposed areas worth prospecting. Almost the entire country has been subjected to intense glaciation, so that the conspicuous oxidized outcrops of orebodies typical of the southwestern United States and Mexico do not exist and surface bodies of enriched or oxidized ore are rare. With few exceptions, the mines1 of the Province are working primary ore. Development, have proved that some of these orebodies are large and important, although usually comparatively low in grade. Besides the few mines that have produced most of the minerals, there are many small mines, but their total output is unimportant. Considering the number of mines and prospects and the widespread mincralization, it is strange that no really great mines, comparable in sizc and richness with those in the western United States, have been found. The Kosaka smelter is situated in the extreme northern end of Hondo (the main island of Japan) 15 mi. east of Odate, on the government railroad, to which it is connected by a private railway. It contains ten blast furnaces having a maximum daily capacity of 1600 short tons of ore, conducting a slow pyritic smelting entirely without coke or limestone, and with a charge carrying over 50 per cent. of briquetted and agglomerated fines. The matte (35 per cent. Cu) is blown in two basic-lined barrel converters, the blister copper (98.8 per cent. Cu) being cast at once into anodes. The adjoining refinery contains 600 tanks with a maximum capacity of 1300 tons of cathodes per month, the byproducts being gold, silver, and bismuth. At present, working at about half capacity, the whole plant consumes 2000 kw. of hydro-electric power, and employs 850 men and women. The ores are derived from two principal sources: The relatively new Hanaoka mine, 20 mi. from the smelter, yielding copper pyrites by underground mining, and the old Kosaka open-cut mine, 1 1/2 mi. from the smelter, yielding three different ores: (a) kuromono, a compact finegrained mixture of barite (32 per cent.), zinc blende, galena, and pyrite, the whole carrying about 2.5 per cent. Cu; (6) cupriferous pyrites with 2.4 per cent. Cu; (c) siliceous ore with 2 per cent. Cu. The Hanaoka ore now constitutes approximately one-half of the charge, almost replacing the Kosaka kuromono which was the ore chiefly smelted until 1913.'

As the theory and the practice of valuing mines have never been discussed in the Transactions, a paper on the subject may be acceptable, even though not exhaustive. The method here indicated is set forth, not as a model of perfection to be followed absolutely, to the exclusion of any other system based on sound scientific, commercial and equitable principles, but merely as an aid to mining engineers and financiers in estimating the value of mining-property. This paper is intended merely to point out certain financial features of the question, and not at all to go into the theories of the formation of mineral veins, extremely valuable as it must, of course, be to understand the laws of the earth's formation and of its various changes, which are the basis of such important sciences as geology and mineralogy, and highly useful as guides in determining the probable existence and extension of mineral deposits. Financial Elements of Mine- Valuation. The practice of basing the stock-exchange price of mining shares upon reports, periodically received from the mine-captain or manager, stating that in his opinion the mine is " improving " in this or that level, and is worth so much " per fathom," is, of course, absurd. Everybody experienced in metalliferous mining is aware that a mineral vein varies in thickness and also in percentage of metal in different parts of the same mine. According to the practice just indicated, a mine must have had as many values a per fathom " as there have been given reports upon it at intervals during the year,

It is not my purpose in this paper to describe all the different contrivances which have been devised, during the last quarter of a century, for the purpose of Iessening the expense of mining and tunnelling operations; I wish merely to call your attention to the crying want of the Western miners for some cheap and effective machine, capable of economizing on the heavy item of hand-drilling, and to enumerate a few of the latest improvements which have been made in machines of this class. This necessity for the introduction of some kind of labor-saving machinery in mining, especially in the West, begins to make itself felt more imperatively every day. No branch of industry has remained so conservative to the old customs and systems of working, as has mining; and yet no branch is so entirely dependent on economical working for a successful issue; and in very few is the proportion of cost of hand-labor to profits obtained so preponderantly heavy. Perhaps the chief reason for this seeming apathy towards progress in this direction arises from the fact that nearly all mining operations, especially in this country, are carried on in regions more or less remote from the great centres of civilization, thereby rendering the carriage and erection of machinery extremely difficult and expensive. Another reason, however, exists in the fact that a large number of men in charge of mining operations are greatly prejudiced against the introduction of machinery underground, from the idea that it cannot be made to adapt itself to the various positions and

In a preceding paper1 the writer has pointed out some apparent relationship between the distribution, on the surface of the globe,, of the known hydrocarbon deposits and the disposition of the principal zones of deformation of the earth's body (geosynclines). He wishes to present some further remarks on this subject. Petroleum deposits, or their derivatives or descendants, are found through the whole range of sedimentary strata, from the pre-Cambrian to the Quaternary. For instance, the prc-Beltian (Shuswap) series of the Canadian Cordillera are interbedded with limestones which are sometimes rich in carbonaceous matter (Sicamous limcstone); and the Beltian system of the same region contains layers of argillitcs and dolomitic limestones which are equally high in carbon content.2 This carbon may be interpreted as the last remnant of hydrocarbons previously contained in the rocks. On the other hand, the actual formation of hydrocarbons under conditions that would eventually permit their deposition in modern sediments is conceded by some geologists.3 Between these two extreme limits, bitumens are found indifferently in all sedimentaries. Thcy constitute a continuous series, some kind of a large family, whose individual members may be entitled to a community of origin and probably represent the different stages of evolution of the primitive, parent matter. The kinship between petroleum and such substances as asphalt, ozocerite, manjak, grahamite, albertite, etc., is well known; and E. H. Cunning-gam-Craig has recently shown how intimately shale fields and oil fields are connectcd.4 For this reason, no distinction is made in the present

ALL of the prospects that later became mines in the Ducktown district were discovered prior to 1854, and most of them were exploited before the turn of the century. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the exploration and current development of the Boyd mine, discovered in 1853. It is in the heart of the Ducktown Basin, in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee, and is being developed by the Tennessee Copper Co. GEOLOGY The geology of the district has been fully described in many papers. Probably the most complete description is that of Emmons and Laney.I The rocks of the district are considered to be of Lower Cambrian age and are a part of the Great Smoky formation, consisting mainly of interbedded graywacke and mica schist, in which the ore deposits occur. The ore bodies are included in an area of about 6 sq. miles, 2 miles wide and 3 miles long striking N. 45° E., and may be grouped into three general lode systems. The northeast system, including the East Tennessee, London and Burra Burra ore bodies, and the southeast group, comprising the Polk County, Mary and Calloway deposits, are all characterized by relatively high copper values. The ores of the central system, which includes the Eureka, Boyd, Old Tennessee and Cherokee ore bodies, are low in copper and high in total sulphide content. Boyd mine lies roughly halfway between the Old Tennessee and Eureka ore bodies [ ] and 2500 ft. in the hanging wall of the Burra Burra mine (Fig. 1). In 1776 two Franciscan friars, Dominguez and Escalante, started to find a direct route from Santa Fé to Monterey, and in their misguided wanderings northward they reached Timpanogos, now known as Utah lake, where they heard of a much larger body of water to the northwest, of which they were told that it was extremely salt.* They never saw this great lake, because they passed south of it on their way to the Pacific coast. The Dead Sea of North America was discovered in 1835 by James Bridger, a trapper. He and other trappers had ascended the Missouri and had reached the Bear river. A discussion arose as to the course of this river, and a bet was made, to settle which Bridger followed the Bear river to its source, in the Uintah mountains, and from the crest of the watershed he caught sight of the lake, to which he then descended.† He tasted the briny water of the inland sea and wondered if it were an arm of the Pacific Ocean. The lake was first seen by the Mormons on July 24, 1847. A band of them, numbering 145 and led by Brigham Young, had migrated from Missouri in search of a new home in the western wilderness. It is recorded that when Brigham Young stood on the summit of the pass over the Wasatch range and saw the valley of the Jordan outspread before him, he exclaimed: "It is enough. This is the right place". He had seen it in a vision, so he claimed, and foresaw the future glory of the new Zion that was to be planted in that happy

A study was made of the effect of ingot structure on the strength and ductility of high-strength wrought-aluminum alloys. It was found that a fine-cast structure facilitated complete homogenization which, in turn, resulted in significant increases in ductility and strength. A completely homogenized 7075-T6 alloy developed tensile properties of 85,000 psi UTS, 75,000 psi YS, with 40 pct RA. Completely homogenized 7001-T6 alloy tensile properties were 102,000 psi UTS, 99,000 psi YS, with 19 pct Ra. A method was devised for making small ingots having secondary dendrite arm spacing of less than 10 u. This method involved multiple-pass arc melting of commercial rolled plate with a tungsten electvode. This material could be completely homogenized after 3 hr at 900°F; homogenization of the original plate material was not complete after 120 hv at 900°F. Degree of homogeneity was determined by use of metallographic and electron-microprobe analyses. The electron-micro-probe study also showed the preferential segregation of solutes in the microstructure. HIGH-strength aluminum alloys, such as those of the 7000 series, usually freeze by the formation and growth of dendrites. The dendrite arm spacing (DAS) depends on the rate of solidification.' Commercial ingots are usually direct chill-cast to promote more rapid solidification, but, due to the large mass of the ingot, localized solidification times are long and a large DAS results. During solidification, solute elements are rejected by the solid as it forms, causing enrichment of the liquid and ultimately solute-rich interdendritic regions. In order to attain a homogeneous ingot, the segregated solutes must diffuse across the dendrite arms. The larger the DM, the longer the time for complete homogenization. In the case of commercial ingots, the DAS is so large that the time for complete homogenization is prohibitively long and, therefore, second phases or compounds are always present. These un-dissolved phases are carried over to the wrought material during processing, resulting in an impairment of strength and ductility. In addition, the mechanical fibering of the undissolved second phases or compounds during working results in mechanical property anisotropy. If complete homogenization could be attained, higher ductility could be expected. The realization of higher ductility at current strength levels is a desirable objective; however, if higher-strength alloys were wanted, it might be possible to sacrifice some of this ductility by adding more solute elements and produce even higher-strength alloys than are currently available. Further, if complete homogenization leads to more efficient utilization of solute elements, then more dilute alloys should have relatively high strengths with very high ductility. In all instances, it would be expected that the degree of mechanical property anisotropy due to mechanical fibering would be reduced. Therefore, it was the purpose of this investigation to produce cast structures that would facilitate homogenization and to determine the effect of homogenization on the properties of high-strength, wrought-aluminum alloys. MATERIAL CLASSIFICATION Commercial Alloys. In order to illustrate the non-homogeneous condition that exists in commercial high-strength, wrought-aluminum alloys, typical micro-structures of 7001, 7075, and 7178 are shown in Fig. 1. The chemical compositional specifications of these alloys are given in Table I. It can be seen in Fig. 1 that a considerable amount of undissolved second-phase material is present in each of these alloys. The solute elements associated with the undissolved phases were identified by electron microanalyses. Back-scattered electron images and characteristic X-ray images of the three commercial alloys are shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. These data indicate that the second phases are regions of high copper and high iron-copper concentrations. The second-phase material also was analyzed for magnesium, zinc, manganese, chromium, and silicon, but no significant enrichment above that of the matrix was found. Therefore, the problem of homogenization resolved itself into one of dissolving the copper-rich and the iron-copper-rich second phases. In order to accomplish this objective, two approaches were made. The first was to reduce the iron as low as possible since this element has a maximum solid solubility of 0.03 pct in aluminum. The second was to produce cast structures with finer DAS to facilitate dissolving the second phases. Commercially Produced High-Purity Alloys. A special high-purity, 2000-lb ingot of 7075 alloy was made by a commercial producer. This alloy contained the following weight percentages of solutes: 5.63 Zn, 2.48 Mg, 1.49 Cu, and 0.21 Cr. All other elements combined were less than 0.02 pct by wt including iron and silicon at less than 0.01 pct each. The ingot was cast and processed into rolled plate using standard commercial techniques. Microstructures of standard commercial 7075 and the special high-purity 7075 are shown in Fig. 5. It can be seen from this figure that the high-purity alloy has less undissolved second-phase material, but a significant amount was still present. In a paper read by title at the Washingtoil meeting of the Institute,' May, 1905,I discussed at considerable length the geological relations, mode of occurrence, and the genesis of the lead- and zinc-ores of the VirginisTennessee region. The present paper treats of the purely ecorlomic phases of the zinc-ores of the district,—such as methods of mining the ores, their preparation and treatment. The Albemarle coullty mines and plant were discussed in the paper referred to above, and mill not be considered here. Methods of Mining. Until very recently the mining of lead- and zinc-ores in Virginia mas limited wholly to the surface-belt of weathering. The mode of occurrence and the character of the ores to be mined were such as to demand the employment of niethods used in mining secondary concentrated ores. Accordingly, a system similar to that practiced in mining brown iron-ores was employed, being modified to meet the changed conditions. Oxidized or Soft Ores.—Up to the present time practically all the ore mined in the Virginia district has been of the oxidized or soft type;—the silicate, calamine, and the carbonate, smith-sonite; largely the former, which has been localized and concentrated at only slight depths below the surface. Because of the extreme irregularity with which the limestone weathers when stripped of the overlying residual clay, it presents a roughened surface of large and small irregular " chimneys"

SILVER the whitest of all metals, has been used for thousands of years. Students of antiquity agree that silver, gold, copper, and their alloys were the first metals discovered by man and they have all played an important part throughout the advance of civilization. Native silver has been found in different parts of the world in varying form and size, such as clusters of fine wires in rock cavities, thin sheets along cleavage planes in veins of rocks, and pieces of irregular shape that vary in size from extremely small particles to masses weighing many pounds. Nearly pure silver is found in, the native state but the native metal is more likely to contain copper or gold. Some of the natural alloys closely approximate the compositions of synthetic alloys that are used in the arts at the present time. As these native silver alloys usually are malleable and ductile, it is evident that prehistoric man was provided by nature with metals that he could work, with the crude tools at his command, into simple ornaments or other articles. The relative scarcity of silver combined with its resistance to attack under ordinary atmospheric conditions have been important factors in determining the purposes for which man has used it. Its scarcity and indestructible character have made its possession particularly desirable, and from the earliest times its principal use has been as a measure of wealth and a medium of exchange. The comparatively high value of silver in relation to other commodities makes it possible to transport a large amount of wealth in small bulk, and silver has traveled back and forth over all parts of the world. RESEMBLING in some respects the enterprise at R Chuquicamata is that of the New Cornelia Copper Co. at Ajo, Arizona. Controlled from its inception by the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., New Cornelia became a unit of the Phelps Dodge Corporation when the latter absorbed the Calumet & Arizona company in 1931. Both Ajo and Chuquicamata are situated in low mountains in extremely arid desert country. Both ore deposits consisted-the past tense is used advisedly because the oxidized ore has nearly all been mined at Ajo-of a horizon of leachable oxidized ores overlying sulphide or concentrating ore. The principal technical problem in each case was the development of a method for treating the oxidized ore. In both instances the capping of waste rock was comparatively thin and power-shovel mining in open cuts was the obvious method of exploitation. Nature had smiled on neither place in the matter of climate. Though Ajo does not have the persistent winds for which Chuquicamata is notorious, the comforts of living are largely artificial. And it is only fair to emphasize that at each place the mining companies have achieved remarkable success in providing these comforts. Of course, in point of size New Cornelia must be content with the inferior role. From May, 1917, when production was started, to the middle of June, 1930, the company leached 16,368,000 tons of oxidized ore, thereby virtually exhausting the ores of this class. Up to the same date, about 15,000,000 tons of sulphide ore had been mined, and a rough estimate gives 170,000,000 tons remaining in reserve. The total tonnage does not loom very large in comparison with Chuquicamata's billion tons; but it is exceeded by similar figures for only four of the Porphyry group.

IT has been reported frequently that the hardness and strength vary over the cross section of cold-worked, particularly cold-drawn, material. Brass rod and wire usually have been found to possess a maximum strength and hardness near the surface.1,2 According to Sachs,' the center fiber has about the same strength as a wire stretched by the same amount in a tensile-test machine, the strength increasing toward the surface (Fig. I). These differences are particularly large for wire given a small reduction on drawing through a die with a wide opening. However, with increasing reduction and hardness, a tendency to form a thin soft surface skin becomes apparent. On the contrary, copper wire has usually been found to possess a soft surface skin3-5 and it has been reported by Harris3 that during the cold-drawing of hot-rolled wire the surface layer becomes increasingly softer than the core, while the layer of maximum strength moves toward the core, it being found near the surface at first. The increase of strength and hardness from the core to the skin is readily explained by the observation that, in addition to the stretching, the layers of a rod or wire are sheared more the closer they are to the surface.1,6-8 However, the presence of a soft surface layer can be attributed only to an annealing effect. However, with increasing reduction and hardness, a tendency to form a thin soft surface skin becomes apparent. On the contrary, copper wire has usually been found to possess a soft surface skin3-5 and it has been reported by Harris3 that during the cold-drawing of hot-rolled wire the surface layer becomes increasingly softer than the core, while the layer of maximum strength moves toward the core, it being found near the surface at first. The increase of strength and hardness from the core to the skin is readily explained by the observation that, in addition to the stretching, the layers of a rod or wire are sheared more the closer they are to the surface.1,6-8 However, the presence of a soft surface layer can be attributed only to an annealing effect. The Appalachian coal region of Virginia, southern West Virginia and Kentucky and the extreme eastern portion of Tennessee constitutes a unique area of surface coal mining activities. The area contains a number of contiguously placed coal seams, up to a total of fourteen in some places, which vary in thickness from a few centimeters to 2,5 meters. Much of this coal is of high quality, some being the highest grade metallurgical coal found anywhere in the world. The region may be broadly characterized physiologically as a dissected plateau with a relief above the valley floors of up to 500 meters and a dendritic drainage pattern. Up to six seams may outcrop in the hillsides above drainage, many of which have been subjected to contour stripping operations. Prior to the passage of the surface mining reclamation act, little effort was made to reclaim stripped areas. The passage of the strip mining act, including the controversial requirement for returning the land to its approximate original contour, has forced intensive recla¬mation efforts from the mining industry. The wisdom of this original contour requirement has been the subject of considerable debate and litigation, mainly because of its cost, inconvenience, and value of the land after it has been reclaimed. Regardless of whether recla¬mation is carried out, under current practices slope failures do occur. This in effect circumvents the intent of the law and can expose large unvegetated spoil areas, and contribute to hillside erosion and stream silting. Such failures must be eliminated if further costly reclamation efforts are to be avoided.

INTRODUCTION As mineral particles are made smaller and smaller, it follows that their surfaces assume a greater and greater importance. In the extreme, the colloidal systems are characterized by the complete dominance of surface over bulk properties. Surface characteristics and properties will clearly influence any fine-particle processing operation. Comminution, for example, is a process of creating new surface. Agglomeration, on the other hand, may involve the reduction of surface area and the forces involved are generally surface forces. All mineral separations, solid-solid as well as solid-fluid, involve the treatment of two or more phases (solid plus liquid and/or gas). As the interfacial area increases, so will its effects on processing. Both physical and chemical separations are influenced by interfacial phenomena. Gravity separations are usually performed in a liquid phase and may be affected, for example, by the wetting characteristics of the solids. Flotation processes, of course, are based on the exploitation of differences in surface properties. Hydrometallurgical processing usually involves interfacial chemical reactions, e.g. leaching. The rates of such reactions depend on surface area and may be influenced by electrochemical effects in the electrical double layer at the solid-liquid interface, or by adsorption of reactant and/or product species from solution. In characterizing a mineral surface, it is important to consider first the surface area, since this determines the relative importance of the interfacial effects. The structure and chemical composition of the surface, which may depend on segregation of impurities within the solid and on adsorption from the external environment as well as on the bulk composition of the solid, will generally determine such
