Under a cooperative agreement between United States Bureau of Mines and the Truax-Traer Coal Company, some operating-scale experiments have been made with the cyclone thickener in the preparation plant of the Shamrock No. 1 mine at Kayford, West Virginia. These tests were made with a 14-in. cyclone of the type developed by the Dutch State Mines in Limburg. It was applied experimentally to the thickening of solids in washery water to obtain performance data to show the range of sizes that may be recovered and other operating characteristics that would indicate the field of usefulness of this device in coal preparation practice. This is a progress report only. It covers results obtained in a series of 17 tests of the operation of what has been considered a unit of commercial size operating on suspensions of fine coal mixed with a relatively small amount of freeimpurities. The underflow material, after further dewatering in centrifuges, is a marketable grade of coal.

A considerable amount of work has been reported in the literature in regard to the texture and earing behavior of copper strip. The rolling texture of copper has been confirmed as (110) [112] and (112) [111], which yields ears of a drawn cup at the position 45" from the rolling direction.1-3 The recrystallization texture has been established as the cubic or (100) [001] texture, where the earing positions are at 0" and 90" to the rolling direction.4-8 It has also been reported that in the development of cubically aligned grains of copper strips, the percentage of this cubic texture increased with an increase of final reduction and final annealing temperature.8,9 A comprehensive study on H.C. copper (British commercial copper of high-conductivity quality = Cu 99.95 pct, O2 0.03 pct, Ag 0.003 pct, Fe 0.005 pct and Pb < 0.001 pct) was made by Cook and Richards.6 They concluded that the recrystallization textures could be described as one or more of the following textures: (1) a single texture (100) 10011, (2) a twin texture (110) [112] and (3) a random orientation, depending upon the previous history of the specimen concerned. The effect of various alloying additions in copper was reported by Dahl and Pawlek.10 They found that certain alloying additions, such as 5 pct Zn, 1 pct Sn, 4 pct Al, 0.5 pct Be, 0.5 pct Cd, or 0.05 pct P suppressed the formation of cubic texture. Brick, Martin and Angierll reported that the cold rolled textures due to various additions fitted a rather simple pattern. However, the recrystallization textures were subject to very considerable variations. In the discussion of this paper, Baldwin stated that deoxidized copper containing 0.02 pct P gave a complicated recrystallization texture at lower temperature. When this copper was annealed at high temperature, a single texture appeared which was described as (110) [ill] but. according to a pri- vate communication from Baldwin, this orientation reported was in error and should have been reported as (110)[112]. He also reported that the earing positions of drawn cups were at 60" to the rolling direction.12 Recently, Howald, in his discussion on the paper by Hibbard and Yen,13 reported that the rolling texture of phosphorus deoxidized copper, containing from 0.006 to 0.020 pct phosphorus, was of the pure copper type. When these coppers were annealed at lower temperatures, they exhibited a random orientation, and when they were annealed at higher temperatures they had a mixed (111)[110] and (100)[001] texture, depending on the severity of the final reduction and annealing temperature. However, the specific influence of phosphorus and other impurities on the recrystallization textures and the deep drawing properties of copper strip has not been thoroughly reported. Therefore, an attempt has been made in the present work to determine the rolling and recrystallization textures and also the earing behavior of five types of commercial copper and thereby to evaluate the effect of phosphorus and some other significant impurities on the development of texture for cold reductions of about 87 to 89 pct. Materials Used The five types of copper employed in the present investigation were two phosphorus deoxidized coppers of different phosphorus content (0.007 and 0.013 pct P), an oxygen-free copper (OFHC), an electrolytic tough-pitch copper, and a fire-refined tough-pitch copper. These materials were subjected to a thorough spectroscopic and chemical analysis. The designations and the chemical compositions were as shown in Table 1. The coppers, FA1, FA2 and FA3. were hot-forged from 3-in. billets into a ½ X 6-in. plate and cold rolled to the ready-to-finish gauge indicated below. FA4 and FA5 were hot rolled and scalped to ready-to-finish gauge. The grain size of all the materials in the ready-to-finish condition was about 0.030 to 0.045 mm. Table 2 shows the last stage of the production schedule for each copper strip used. Experimental Procedure ANNEALING, GRAIN SIZE AND HARDNESS DETERMINATIONS Specimens of each type of copper were finally annealed in air for periods of one hour at temperatures ranging from 300 to 1600°F and were subsequently cooled in air. The average grain diameter of the annealed specimen was estimated by comparing with a standard grain size chart. Hardness was determined on the Rockwell 15 T scale. CUPPING TESTS Cups were made in a blanking and drawing set, in which blanks of 2-in. diam were drawn to a cup of 1.25-in. diam with an average depth of about 0.75 in. The clearance between the punch and die was about 0.032 in. The ears of the cup were measured with a special fixture which read the height of ears to one-thousandth of an inch on every ten-degree interval along the circumference of the cup. POLE FIGURES The usual transmission diffraction method with unfiltered copper radiation was employed to determine the pole-figures of the specimens cold-rolled or annealed at 900°F. THE Institute of Metals held a well rounded out symposium on the working of metals, distributed over two sessions. At the first session* four papers were presented, two dealing with the, cold working of metals and alloys and two with the hot working of non-ferrous alloys. The first paper by E. V. Crane, dealt with "Metal Working in Power Presses." Mr. Crane pointed out the empirical nature of engineering data available for use in calculating the probable stresses developed and power requirements, for the shearing, drawing, binding and other forming operations. He described the various operations, methods of determining stresses developed and presented data obtained. In the discussion C. F. Hammond took exception to Mr. Crane&apos;s objections to the rather too frequent. annealing operations in drawing of cartridge cases, pointing out that the material was-manufactured to meet specified structure and physical requirements, which could only be met by carefully controlled sequences of working and intermediate annealing operations.

Cu-Pb alloys in the vicinity of the monotectic composition have been directionally solidified under a high temperature gradient at rates up to 2 X l0-&apos; cm per sec. Over a wide range of compositions, high growth rates yield a composite structure consisting of continuous rods of lead in a copper matrix. This range of compositions increases with increasing growth rate, in agreement with arguments based on the relative velocities of composite growth and the growth of copper dendrites or lead drops. The breakdown of the composite structure at slow growth rates is explained in terms of the relative interphase surface energies. The observed interrod spacings of the composite structure are large compared with the predictions of the Jackson-Hunt equations of eutectic growth. ThE directional solidification of many eutectic alloys produces fine composite structures of parallel lamellae or rods. There has been considerable interest not only in the fundamentals of this two-phase solidification process,&apos;-3 but also in the interesting physical properties produced by such regular and aniso-tropic microstructures. Composite structures can be grown only over a limited range of composition, beyond which coarse primary dendrites of one phase appear. In organic eutec-tics, this composition range of composite structures has been shown to increase with increasing growth rate.7"10 These results were explained in terms of the relative velocities of composite (coupled) growth and dendritic growth. Although similar arguments should apply to metallic eutectics,11-13 suitable experimental results are lacking. In contrast to the work on eutectics, the directional solidification of monotectic alloys has received little attention. (The monotectic reaction is similar to the eutectic reaction, except that one of the resulting phases is a liquid, which subsequently solidifies in a separate reaction at a lower temperature.) Directional solidification of some monotectic alloys&apos;4715 yields regular rodlike microstructures, whereas in other cases macroscopic separation of solid and liquid phases occurs.16 chadwick17 rationalized these results in terms of the probable relative magnitudes of the various interphase surface energies. A recent study of chill-cast Cu-Pb alloys18 revealed a fine rodlike microstructure in alloys near the monotectic composition. It was decided to investigate the directional solidification of such alloys, and to determine the range of composition and growth conditions yielding composite structures. The Cu-Pb system is convenient for such a study, both because it is simple metallurgically, with no compound formation and negligible solid solubilities, and because its basic properties are well-documented. Recent literature on the Cu-Pb system includes studies of bulk thermo-dynamic properties,&apos;g surface energies,20"21 densi-ties,25 and diffusion constants.a6 A similar study of the directional solidification of Cu-Pb alloys was recently undertaken, independently, by Kamio and Oya." EXPERIMENTAL Alloys were prepared by melting 99.999 pct Cu and 99.999 pct Pb in a graphite crucible, stirring well, and pouring into a cold graphite mold. Rods 0.175 in. in diam were machined from the ingots. Alloy compositions studied ranged from 25 to 55 wt pct Pb. Samples were placed in graphite crucibles 5 in. long with 4 in. OD and 0.035-in. walls. They were melted under flowing argon in a vertical, two-zone. platinum -wound furnace. A voltage stabilizer was used to minimize fluctuations in input power. The narrow specimen diameter minimized convection. Directional solidification was achieved by driving the crucible downward into a +-in. hole in a water-cooled copper toroid. The toroid was located immediately below the narrow end zone of the furnace. The end zone was separately powered to maintain high local temperature. Therefore a high temperature gradient (approximately 300 deg per cm) was maintained in the specimen throughout the run. The crucible motion was screw-driven. and a wide range of drive speeds were available. The limited rate of heat removal caused a thermal lag in the specimens at high drive rates. However. temperature-time curves from thermocouples imbedded in a representative sample indicated that the average growth rate still approximately equaled the drive rate. Although the specimens were initially homogeneous, melting and re solidification redistributed the lead. producing composition variations of several percent along the specimen length. (During melting. lead melted first and ran down the sample surface. Rapid freezing tended to reproduce the resulting composition gr~dient, but slow freezing did not because a slow-moving interface tended to reject lead. as discussed later.) To determine local composition. ;-g samples were cut from regions exhibiting various microstructures and were chemically analyzed for lead content. Micrographs were taken on as-polished or lightly etched surfaces. Three-dimensional structure of the lead network was viewed with a scanning electron microscope after removal of some of the copper matrix with nitric acid. RESULTS Several different microstructures are observed, depending on composition and drive rate. AN ounce of prevention is worth A a pound of cure&apos; is an old proverb that has sometimes been forgotten in programs having to do with the health of workmen. Realization of the truth of this maxim is increasing, however, and today the iron-mining industry, with which I am particularly concerned, is becoming more alive to the prevention of illness and the conservation of health, thus decreasing the need for treatment after diagnosis has established its necessity. The healthy workman is the happy, efficient workman, and new programs tending to make him more health-minded are being put into operation. Preventive medicine is less costly than corrective medicine, to say nothing of the better results obtained. Periodic physical examinations, with close follow-up attention when required, have reduced the time lost because of illness, workmen&apos;s compensation costs, and group-insurance benefits for nonindustrial disabilities.

In the preparation of this series of books it was considered particularly appropriate to include this work. Gunther was one of the younger men who was associated with Colonel Mudd in the finding and development of ore deposits. Supported by Mudd, Gunther undertook a systematic survey of the sources of copper of ancient Europe. This survey resulted in the rediscovery of the deposits now worked by the Cyprus Mines Corporation for which Gunther was, until shortly before his death, the resident manager. In finding and developing these mines, Gunther applied the methods and data embodied in this book and proved their usefulness. It is believed that other young engineers may profit similarly. In presenting a new edition, the form and substance of this work have been preserved and no changes have been made in any direct statement of the original author. Individual illustrations, paragraphs and mine descriptions appearing in the first edition have been omitted in order to permit introduction of new material. The latter has been chosen so as to present a somewhat more balanced picture of the mining industry as it now exists. The new material relates largely to the so-called porphyry coppers, to mines in Canada, Rhodesia, Alaska, and a number in the United States that have become important since the book was first written. The new material was prepared by Mr. Russell C. Fleming, using the best that had been published and items of which he had personal knowledge or had obtained by correspondence with men familiar with the deposit described. LATE in 1944 a group of petroleum and coal technologists was organized in Wash¬ington under the sponsorship of the Petroleum Administration for War and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This group, known as the Technical Oil Mission, was placed under the authority of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which was then promoting the organization of other missions to be sent to Germany to obtain technical information regarding various industries in that country. The objective of the Technical Oil Mission was to obtain technical data on German production of synthetic oil from coal and all other commercial practices and research projects connected with the oil industry. The primary purpose was to obtain such data as were immediately essential to assist the war against Germany and Japan, with secondary emphasis on technical information that would assist American industry after the end of the war. Since oil-production facilities in Ger¬many and the occupied countries con¬trolled by Germany were the top targets for strategic bombing, the Technical Oil Mission was the first group under the Technical Industrial Intelligence Com¬mittee to enter Germany. A few members of the group flew to London in February 1945 and the majority of the remainder followed in March. In London they were joined by an equal number of British investigators and the combined, mission was then sent into Germany under the authority of the Combined Intelligence Objectives Subcommittee (CIOS). A sum¬mary of the more important information gained by this combined British and American mission is presented below. GERMAN OIL PRODUCTION The oil available to Germany, both natural and synthetic, and including pro¬duction from occupied countries, reached a peak in late 1943 and early 1944. Pro¬duction at this time was at the rate of 1,200,000 metric tons per month, equiva¬lent to i00,000,000 bbl. per year, or about 7 per cent of the wartime production in the United States. Of this production, 50 per cent was crude oil from Romania and Hungary, 12 per cent was crude oil from Germany itself, including Austria, 9 per cent com¬prised coal-carbonization products, that is, tar and light oil, and only the remaining 29 per cent was synthetic liquid fuel made from coal or tar. Synthetic liquid fuel made in Germany was equivalent therefore to less than 2 per cent of war¬time production of crude oil in the United States. The success of the strategic bombing campaign against German oil-production facilities is demonstrated by the fact that by September 1944 the Ploesti fields of Romania and much of the syn¬thetic oil production had been eliminated, so that the amount of oil available to the German war machine was only 25 per cent of the peak quantity mentioned above. VERTICAL-INTENSITY magnetometers, such as the Hotchkiss Superdip and the Askania vertical field balance, are now [ ] widely used, because vertical-intensity charts give definite information for the location of upper pole, dip and strike, and approximate shape of the deposit. Again, a slow and steady increase of dip over a large area indicates a large deep-lying deposit, while a large dip limited to a small area and falling away rapidly suggests a small and shallow one. The complication comes more from the richness of the ore. A large body of lean ore near the surface might produce the same vertical-intensity chart as a rich ore at depth. This paper presents a method for calculating the maximum depth of a single-pole deposit and another for a two-pole mineral body, by utilizing data of both vertical and horizontal intensities as obtained by a Thalen-Tiberg magnetometer. As shown on the left side of Fig. 1, lean ore, rich ore and a single pole produce the same magnetic field. The depth of the pole, [ ] h, can be calculated from the following relation: [h=a=tan¢=G-F h=aXFy] where G is the vertical intensity at point A due to the pole; F, the horizontal intensity of the same; and a, the distance from the point of maximum vertical intensity or the vertical projection of the pole on the surface to the point of observation A. If an entirely covered deposit is indicated by magnetic measurements and boring cost estimated from the calculated depth is so reasonable as to encourage drilling, the ore should be struck somewhere within the limit of the calculated depth by the borehole. A number of such points as A should be taken for calculation, erratic results should be rejected and the average figure used for cost estimation.

THIS paper describes some properties of steels in the composition range 0.10 to 0.30 per cent carbon and 1 to 7 per cent chromium. It is well known that some steels of this type develop high tensile strengths upon receiving comparatively simple heat treatments, such as ordinary air cooling from appropriate temperatures, with "or without subsequent tempering treatments. These high strengths are frequently associated with unusual toughness as measured by the Izod or Charpy impact test. The chromium content, in addition to imparting the above properties, enhances the resistance to corrosion and improves the strength and oxida-tion resistance at elevated temperatures. Moreover, these steels have good forging and fabricating properties, as evidenced by the fact that several thousand tons of seamless tubing have been made during the past five years from steels containing 0.10 to 0.25 per cent carbon and 5 per cent chromium.

IN THE light of the experimental data on equilibrium for the reaction C + FeO = Fe + CO in molten steel recently obtained by Kinzel and I Egan,1 it is necessary to revise current theories regarding the nature of equilibrium between carbon and FeO in the basic open-hearth furnace. According to the measurements of these investigators the equilibrium constant m for the above reaction for a pressure of dissolved CO equal to 1 atm. is equal to 0.0005 at 1550° C., when concentrations of carbon and. FeO are expressed in percentages by weight. Their work also shows that, with the pressure of CO fixed at 1 atm., not only is the product of carbon and FeO constant, but carbon and FeO are each independently constant-a circumstance which might have been predicted from theoretical considerations. At 1550° C., carbon is constant at about 0.025 per cent. and FeO at about 0.020 per cent., with the pressure of dissolved -CO equal to 1 atm., the product of these two constants being equal to the originally mentioned constant of 0.0005. Available data on the dissolved FeO content of samples taken from the metal bath at practical slag-metal equilibrium prove that this FeO content is determined solely by temperature and the effective FeO content of the slag. The distribution constant r at 1550° C., as determined by Herty, Gaines, Larsen, Simkins, Geruso and Watkins2 is equal to 0.0086. A slag would have to contain 0.020/0.0086 = 2.3 per cent. effective FeO or less in order to prevent the metal from containing more dissolved FeO than that required for equilibrium with CO at 1 atm. pressure. Such low percentages of FeO are never found in basic open-hearth slags at the completion of a heat when rate of carbon drop has become practi-

Epitaxial growth of GaAs 1-xPx on germanium substrates was achieved using an open tube vapor transport system. The compositional range of 0.3 < x < 0.4 was examined. The best results were obtained with (311) orientation of the germanium substrate. The physical and chemical properties of the resulting layers were investigated using several techniques. Spectrographic analyses of the layers indicate substantial incorporation of germanium into the GaAs t-X Px layer. Evidence is presented which indicates that this incorporation occurs via a vapor phase transport process rather than by solid phase dijfu-sion. Electrical measurements suggest that the germanium thus incorporated behaves predominantly as a deep donor in the compositional range of 0.33 < x * 0.40 and has a deleterious effect upon the luminescent properties of GaAs1-x Px. The increasing technological importance of GaAs1-xPx for use in light-emitting devices has led to an evaluation of several aspects of existing growth processes. The method most commonly used to prepare GaAs1-xPx for electroluminescent device applications is vapor phase epitaxial growth on GaAs substrates.&apos;-4 In a typical electroluminescent diode structure the active region of the diode is entirely within the epitaxial layer and thus the electrical properties of the substrate are relatively unimportant since it is effectively a simple series resistance (assuming hetero-junction effects to be negligible). The use of germanium rather than GaAs as the substrate material is of interest for several reasons. First, GaAs of reasonable structural quality has been epitaxially grown on germanium4-2 and it is reasonable to expect that GaAs1-xPx could subsequently be deposited on the GaAs layer. Second, germanium substrates are readily available with both lower dislocation densities and larger areas than GaAs. Finally, single crystals of germanium are more economical than GaAs single crystals. The principal objective of the present investigation was to test the feasibility of growing GaAs1-xPx epi-taxially on germanium substrates, and to evaluate the properties of such layers with regard to electroluminescent device requirements. The approach used was to a) demonstrate epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx on germanium, and b) characterize the relevant structural, electrical, and optical properties of the GaAs1-xPx layers. The possibility of germanium incorporation into the grown layers was of special interest since there was some indication of this in previous studies of GaAs growth on germanium.5&apos;11,12 Although a study of the electrical properties of germanium in GaAs1-xPx was not an intent of this investigation, several features of the electrical properties of the layers grown in the present study which appear to be due to germanium are described. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The open-tube vapor transport system used for the epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx is illustrated in Fig. 1. This system utilizes the GaC1-GaC13 transport reaction and is similar in most respects to the larger system described elsewhere.&apos; The germanium substrates were n-type, with a resistivity of 40 ohm-cm (Eagle-Picher Co.). These were cut to the orientations of {100), {111), and (3111, and were mechanically polished and chemically etched in CP-4 (5 min at 0°C) prior to growth. In some cases, a GaAs substrate was employed in addition to the germanium. The orientation of the latter was {loo}, and they were also mechanically polished and chemically etched prior to growth. The initial composition of the deposited layer was pure GaAs. After approximately 10 microns of GaAs was deposited on the germanium substrate, the phosphorus content of the layer was gradually increased over a distance of approximately 15 microns to the desired concentration and maintained at this value throughout the remainder of the growth. Typical operating parameters used during growth are given in Table I. Selenium was used as a n-type dopant in several runs to facilitate comparison of the electrical properties of the layers grown on germanium with those of layers grown on GaAs substrates, which are usually doped with selenium. The concentration of H2Se in the gas phase was adjusted to a value which would normally yield a carrier density of 1 to 5 x 101 7 at room temperature in layers grown on GaAs substrates. The terminal surfaces of the epitaxial layers were examined by optical microscopy for structural characteristics. Laue back-reflection photographs (Cu radi-ation) were also made on the terminal surface to verify the epitaxial nature of the deposit. After these steps

Unmodified disilicide coatirigs were applied to sheet-tensile specimens ofCb-Dg3 and Mo-TZM veJractovy- metal alloys. Coating thickness, degree of coating-substrate interdiffusion, and specimen geonzetry (notched and plain were included in the variables studied. Tensile tests were made to determine the ductile-lo-brittle transition temperature. The disilicide coating modestly increased the transition temperatlre of TZM, but had no effect on 043. Neither material condition (recrystallized or stress-velieved) nor specimen geometry (notched or unnotched) significantly altered the effects of coatings on the transilion temperatures of. the alloys. Cracks in the brittle coatings did not propagate into the substrate, and fracture modes appeared to be the same for both un-coated and coated specimens. MOST potential structural applications for refractory metals and alloys involve exposures to oxidizing environments at elevated temperatures. The general lack of oxidation resistance of these metals will require protective coatings to allow fulfillment of their potential. Currently preferred coatings for the oxidation protection of refractory metals are brittle intermetallic aluminides or silicides. These are typically formed on the surface of the refractory-metal substrate by a diffusion reaction between the substrate and a gaseous or liquid medium that is rich in aluminum or silicon. Because of the brittleness of these coatings, they will sustain no plastic deformation at low temperatures. They are frequently cracked by cooling from the coating temperature because of the thermal-expansion mismatch with the substrate alloy. Even if they survive cooling intact, they crack rather than sustain deformation under load at low temperatures. Thus, when a coated refractory metal is strained beyond the elastic limit of the coating at low temperatures, the mechanical environment of the substrate would include both static and dynamic cracks. These might be expected to influence the flow and fracture behavior of the substrate. This could be manifested in an altered fracture mode and/or an increase in the normal ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of the refractory-metal substrate. This paper presents the results of a research program that was conducted to determine the influence of the presence of a brittle surface coating on the low-strain-rate tensile behavior of typical refractory metals at low temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Material Preparation. Thirty-mil-thick sheets of molybdenum TZM alloy (Mo-0.5Ti-O.1Zr) and colum-bium D43 alloy (Cb-IOW-1Zr-O.1C) were obtained commercially. These alloys were selected as substrate materials representing two classes of materials important in current refractory-metal technology. The TZM was in the stress-relieved condition, and exhibited a heavily fibered grain structure. The D43 had been processed by the duPont "optimum" fabrication schedule,&apos; and exhibited slightly elongated grains typical of this process. Tensile specimens of two geometries were prepared from these materials: 1) plain specimens with 0.2-in.-wide 1.0-in.-long gage sections; 2) specimens similar to above, but with a 0.06-in.-diam hole drilled in the center of the gage section, providing a stress concentration factor, Kt, of 2.5. The "notch" geometry was selected to represent a typical condition of a rivet hole or other geometric discontinuities as might be encountered in various applications. Machined specimens were degreased, with a final rinse in acetone, prior to the application of coatings. Specimens of each substrate and configuration were pack-siliconizedin a particulate mixture of 80 pct A1203, 17 pct Si, and 3 pct NaF. Specimens were embedded in this mix (contained in graphite retorts) and coated in an electrically heated argon-atmosphere furnace under time-temperature conditions to effect nominal 1- and 3-mil-thick silicide coatings: Coating Thickness, mils Thermal Treatment 0.6 to 1.4 24 hr at 982°C 2.4 to 3.2 48 hr at 1093°C Coating kinetics were similar for both the TZM and D43 substrates. These treatments had little or no visible effect on the substrate microstructure as determined by optical metallography. The coatings on TZM were essentially single-phase unmodified disilicides, while those on D43 showed substantial evidence of modification by proportionate reaction with the respective substrate elements or phases, as shown in Fig. 1. It was recognized that these coatings might not be particularly desirable regarding protective capability. However, it was desired to circumvent possible inter -ferring chemical interaction with the substrate by pack additives such as chromium, titanium, boron, aluminum, and other elements that typify the better protective coatings for these materials.&apos; Thus, the results presented apply specifically to the simple silicide coatings investigated. This study presents an analysis of annular backpressure variations associated with controlled gas kicks and their pronounced effect on casing .strings and exposed under lying formations. A mathematical model describing the volumetric behavior of an extraneous gas as it is transported from reservoir to .surface conditions under changing temperatures and pressures has been programmed in a Kingston FORTRAN II language for digital computer analysis. The gases under investigation typify Gulf Coast reservoir gases within a 0.6 to 0.7 .specific gravity range. The program output has been substantiated by actual field cases. of gas kicks encountered in Gulf Coart we1l.s. The development of empirical equations for calculating suitable gamy deviation factors for unique temperatures and pressures was incorporated in the program to provide realistic solution.. An output listing of annular backpressures and corresponding equivalent fluid densities resulting at a predetermined critical depth (casing setting depth) and total depth for selected .stages of circulation is provided in a chronological .sequence. Additional information including reservoir pressure and temperature, kill rnrid density, produced gas or surface volume of the expanded gas intro vion, drill pipe and annular volumes can he obtained from the model. This paper illustrates that a precise knowledge of the volumetric behavior of extraneous gases in annular flow and its effect on equivalent fluid densities at a critical depth is significant and should receive .serious consideration in controlling threatened blowouts and in the design of drilling programs. The differential pressures resulting permit an extraneous influx of gas into the wellbore. A suspension in drilling progress is necessary to restore fluid equilibrium throughout the system. Whether formation gas kicks originate unintentionally or by design, the prospect of a threatened or actual blowout exists and a method assuring a safe and effective well control procedure must be observed. A significant contribution to well control technology was advanced by Records et a1.l in 1962. Using the concept of transmitting a constant equivalent formation pressure at the point of intrusion, Records et al. introduced a calculation technique providing the annular backpressures encountered in a well control environment as a func tion of the volumetric behavior of a 0.6 specific gravity natural gas. In essence, the procedure outlined an annular backpressure schedule in terms of fluid volume circulated at different stages of a well control operation. A number of other publications2-&apos; proposing various techniques for controlling gas intrusions in a wellbore achieve pressure control essentially through maintenance of a constant bottom-hole pressure by surface choke adjustments. The subsequent pressure effects induced in the annulus unfortunately receive little emphasis. Due to the tedious and repetitive nature of annular backpressure computations, a theoretical solution by digital computer is introduced for predicting annular backpressure and equivalent fluid density profiles associated with controlled gas kicks. We point out the effects of volumetric behavior of extraneous gases in annular flow and related field phenomena on equivalent fluid densities at a critical depth. The investigation indicated that equivalent fluid densities at a critical depth are of significance and should receive consideration in the control of threatened blowouts and in the design of drilling programs. Theoretical Considerations The mechanism of vertical gas flow through an annulus is governed by the PVT properties of the fluid, the pressure distribution within the system, the fluid flow rates and the geometry of flow. Due to the numerous variables involved in this type of problem, certain assumptions were imposed in deriving the mathematical model and in establishing the solutions. Two gases, characterized by specific gravities of 0.6 and 0.7, were selected to typify Gulf Coast reservoir fluids. An in.t!estigation has been made of the equilibrium conditions at 1200°C in the reaction between hydrogen sulfide gas and sulfur dissolved in Fe-Si alloys From this the equilibrium constant, activity coefficient, and activity of sulfur in solution were calculated. A number of studies of the equilibrium of sulfur with iron and iron alloys have given closely agreeing results from which the activity and free energy of the dissolved sulfur may be found. Sherman, El-vander, and chipman1 discussed the significant researches of dilute solutions of sulfur in liquid iron prior to 1950, and the results of this study indicated that the relationship between the ratio of PH2S/PH2 in the environment and the percentage of sulfur in solution is not a linear one. Morris and williams2 studied the equilibrium conditions in the reaction between hydrogen sulfide gas and sulfur dissolved in liquid iron and Fe-Si alloys, and reported that silicon dissolved in iron has a pronounced effect on the equilibrium conditions. They found that the activity of sulfur in iron is increased by the addition of silicon. At a silicon content of 4 pet the activity coefficient of sulfur was about twice that for sulfur dissolved in pure iron. Sherman and chipman3 investigated the chemical behavior of sulfur in liquid iron at 1600°C through the study of the equilibrium: H2 + S = H2S; K = PH2S/PH2 . 1/as [1] From the known equilibrium constant of the reaction between H2, H2S, and S and the experimental data, the activity of sulfur in the melt was determined. They found that the activity coefficient of sulfur defined as fs = as/%s is increased by silicon and decreased by manganese. Morris4 and Turkdogan5 also reported that manganese decreases the activity coefficient of sulfur in liquid iron and iron-base alloys. A recent technique of sulfur analysis developed by Kriege and wolfe6 of the Westinghouse Research Laboratories permits an accurate sulfur analysis of 0.5 * 0.2 ppm in the range of 0.1 to 3 ppm, whereas in the range of 3 to 50 ppm the accuracy is ±1 ppm. This technique of sulfur analysis was utilized in this experiment. Previous unpublished data reported that sulfur analysis by the combustion technique was not accurate below 20 ppm. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Five 5-lb ingots of high-purity Fe-Si were prepared. Three of these ingots were prepared without the addition of manganese but with a variation of silicon contents from 2 to 4 pet. The remaining two ingots contained 3 pet Si with the addition of manganese. Ingots were made at each of three silicon levels: 2, 3, and 4 pet. No alloys were made with less than 2 pet Si since below approximately 1.8 pet Si the binary alloy exhibits a to ? transformation. The two additional ingots of 3 pet Si-Fe were made at each of two manganese levels: 0.20 and 0.50 pet. To minimize the effects, if any, of impurities on the activity of sulfur on Si-Fe, the best metals available were used for melting. All ingots were vacuum-melted in magnesium oxide crucibles. After obtaining samples for chemical analyses, the ingots were processed. This consisted of hot rolling and subsequently cold rolling the alloys. Each ingot was hot-rolled at 1000°C, reheating between every pass to minimize grain growth. All heating was done in a protective argon atmosphere. The slabs were hot-rolled to strips 50 mils thick. After hot rolling, all the material was pickled to remove the scale formed on the surface of the strip during hot rolling. The material was then cold-rolled to 12-mil strips. Single strips of the material used in this experiment were hydrogen-annealed at 1200°C for 16 hr in an alumina tube. Chemical analyses of strips M-1, M-3, M-4, M-7, and M-8 are given in Table I. Sulfur, silicon, and manganese analyses were made from the millings from the cold-rolled 12-mil strips. The oxygen analyses were made from slugs of the as-cast material. The hydrogen sulfide used in these experiments was supplied from cylinders containing a mixture of argon and 1 pet hydrogen sulfide. The parts per million of hydrogen sulfide were determined from the analysis of the exit gas of the annealing furnace during each anneal. The effect of carbon in solid solution on the plastic behavior of thorium was studied by measuring the flow stress of Th-C alloys from 4.2" to 573°K and at several strain rates. Carbon was found to strengthen thorium primarily by increasing the thermally activated component of the flow stress. The strengthening due to carbon was directly proportional to the carbon content and decreased rapidly with increasing temperature up to 423" K. The flow stress also increased with increasing strain rate. The strengthening appears to be due to a strong short-range interaction between carbon atoms and dislocations. A yield point was observed in the Th-C alloys which increased with increasing carbon content. JTREVIOUS study of the mechanical properties of thorium has been confined largely to the measurement of the engineering properties. Work prior to 1956 has been summarized by Milko et al.1 who reported that additions of carbon to thorium sharply increased the room-temperature strength. In addition, the yield strength was observed to decrease rapidly over the temperature range from 25" to 500°C. In 1960, Klieven-eit2 measured the flow stress of thorium containing 400 ppm C. He found that over the temperature range from 78" to 470°K the flow stress was strongly dependent on temperature and rate of deformation. A drop in the load-elongation curve, or a yield point, was observed over most of the above temperature range. Above 470°K, the flow stress was nearly independent of temperature and strain rate. This strong temperature and strain rate dependence of flow stress is not generally observed in fcc metals. It is, in fact, more typical of the behavior reported for bcc metals. Bechtold,3 Wessel,4 and conrad5 have pointed out the striking difference between the commonly studied bcc metals and fcc metals in regard to the effect of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress. Zerwekh and scott6 studied the plastic deformation of thorium reported to contain 12 ppm C. They found that this material did not obey the Cottrell-Stokes law as expected for fcc metals. In addition, they found values of the activation volume smaller by an order of magnitude than expected for an fcc metal. They concluded that thorium was strengthened by a randomly dispersed solute. Thorium differs from many other fcc metals that have been studied extensively in that it shows a relatively high carbon solubility at room temperature. Mickleson and peterson7 report the solubility limit at room temperature to be 3500 ppm C. The lowest value reported is that of Smith and Honeycombe8 who report the limit to be 2000 ppm C at 350°C. The pres- ent investigation was a systematic study of the flow stress and yield point phenomenon of thorium over a broad range of carbon content, temperature, and strain rate. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thorium used in this investigation was produced by the reduction of thorium tetrachloride with magnesium as described by Peterson et a1.&apos; Chemical analysis of the original ingot after arc melting and electron beam melting is shown in Table I. Alloys were prepared by arc melting this thorium with high-purity spectrographic graphite. Threaded specimens with a gage length 0.252 in. diam by 1.6 in. long were used for the constant stress or creep measurements. These specimens were machined from rod which had been cold-rolled and swaged to % in. diam. Tensile specimens were prepared by swaging annealed 3/8 -in.-diam rod to 0.102 *0.001 in. The as-swaged wire was cut to lengths of 2 in., annealed, and the center 1-in. gage length elec-tropolished to 0.100 ±0.001 in. The specimens were gripped for a length of 3 in. at each end by a serrated four-jaw collet which was tightened by a tapered compression nut. No slipping occurred in the grips and negligible deformation was observed outside the 1-in. gage length. Both the creep and tensile specimens were annealed at 730°C under a vacuum of 1 x X Torr. The resulting structures consisted of equiaxed recrystallized grains with a grain size of 3200 grains per sq mm for the tensile specimens and 2200 grains per sq mm for the creep specimens. After the specimens were prepared, samples were analyzed for nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. The results of these analyses are given in Table 11.

Union Carbide has recently developed two open- pit vanadium mines in the Wilson Srpings area of central Arkansas about five miles southeast of Hot Springs. The ores from these mines, together with those from a larger vanadium deposit at nearby Magnet Cove, are processed at a new 1600- tpd plant built by the company in the immediate vicinity (Fig. 1). The Wilson Springs vanadium deposits are associated with the Potash Sulfur Springs intrusive, a circular igneous complex which is exposed over an area that is somewhat less than a mile in diameter.1 The complex has a crude ring structure similar to that of the larger Magnet Cove instrusive six miles to the east.2

Isothermal temper-embrittlement studies were conducted on a 5140 steel at various temperatures for times as long as 3000 hr. Specimens from the embrittled steel were subjected to impact tests, metallographic examination, microhardness, and lattice-parameter measurements. SEVERAL of the steels in the low alloy group are subject to a pronounced decrease in impact energy if held within, or cooled slowly through, a range of temperatures below the lower critical. This phenomenon, known as temper embrittlement, is quite pronounced in the chromium steels of which AISI 5140 is typical. This study considered the response of one heat of 5140 steel when embrittled isothermally at various temperatures for times as long as 3000 hr. Excellent reviews of the work done in the field of temper embrittlement have been written by Hollomonl and Woodfine.&apos; Both authors list the various theories which have been advanced to explain temper embrittlement. Some of the mechanisms considered were: 1—a transformation below 700°C; 2—an allotropic modification of iron; 3—precipitation from the ferrite of such compounds as carbides, nitrides, phosphides, or chromium oxides; 4—decomposition of retained austenite; 5—modification of special carbides; 6—grain-boundary segregation; and 7—selective distribution of carbides. The present study investigated the changes in hardness, Meyer&apos;s number, impact properties, micro-structure, and lattice parameter which occurred on embrittlement. Previous studies considered the influence of microstructure and of prior austenitic grain size3 on the response of 5140 steel to temper embrittlement. Equipment and Procedure All samples were taken from one heat of 5140 steel; the chemical composition of this steel was: 0.43 pct C, 0.86 pct Mn, 0.020 pct P, 0.019 pct S, 0.27 pct Si, 0.84 pct Cr, 0.10 pct Ni, 0.06 pct Mo, 0.10 pct Cu, and the remainder Fe. The material was received as % in. rounds. This stock was cut down to blanks measuring approximately 0.425~0.425~2.196 in. Heat Treatment: The rough blanks were normalized at 1600°F (870°C) for 1 hr, then austenitized at 1600°F (870°C) for 1 1/2 hr, and quenched into an agitated oil bath. The specimens were tempered at 1275°F (690°C) for 5 hr and water quenched. These tempered specimens were designated as the toughened state. Embrittling Treatments: The tempered bars were divided into sets and subjected to the various embrittling treatments listed in Table I. Temperatures from 750" to 1050°F were investigated for times of 1 to 3000 hr. Special tests to determine the effect of heating a short time at a higher temperature after long-time embrittlement at some lower temperature were also conducted. All specimens were water quenched at the end of the embrittling cycle, then ground and notched to obtain standard Charpy V-notch specimens. Impact Tests: The bars were fractured in a 260 ft-lb Charpy impact unit; specimens were fractured at temperatures ranging from —315°F to room temperature. Fixed temperatures used consisted of —315°F with liquid nitrogen, —115°F with dry ice and acetone, and 32°F with ice and water. Intermediate temperatures were obtained by suspending the bars in a jig over the liquid nitrogen, dry ice and acetone, or ice and water.

The use of computing machines to solve physical problems has made it imperative to represent physical data in a form computing machines can use. Although curve-fitting is an old and well-practiced art, there still seems to be some interest in questions regarding what methods can be used and why. Even though there are many good references on this subject, it may be of some value to discuss a particular method which has been found to be useful, and to make available the associated tables for its use in the hope that there can be saved a few of the tedious hours necessary to reduce many of the suggested methods to practice. Although a very brief discussion of the mathematical background of the tables is included immediately below, those interested only in their use can skip directly to the section on Use of the Tables. Direct Fit of a Set of Points A frequently encountered problem is: Given data which can be represented by a smooth curve +(x), to find an easy-to-evaluate function F(x), with only a few coefficients, which is a good approximation of +(x) on the interval 0 5 x 5 x,,. POSSIBLE postwar trends of the more important world minerals will be determined in part by their present world position and by the acts and forces that have operated during the war period, so it is desirable first to review briefly what has been happening in the foreign field of metals and minerals. When we first entered this war we of the mineral profession were all acutely conscious of our lack of strategic minerals and other materials, which had to be imported in great quantities-minerals such as manganese, chrome, tin, mercury, nickel, and antimony. But we realized also that we had to acquire vast quantities of those minerals of which we had thought we were bountifully supplied. Our assumed domestic abundances turned out to be woefully deficient, and demands also arose for new minerals never before produced in large quantities. Some threescore minerals entered the strategic list of our imports. Ores from new sources had to be sought, developed, and transported. Tonnages in the millions of such bulk materials as zinc, lead, copper, chrome, and manganese flowed to feed our war efforts. Sparsely distributed minerals such as tin, mercury, antimony, tungsten, cobalt, mica, and corundum had to be lured from their rock lairs in greatly increased quantities to feed the hungry maw of war industry, and the rare minerals such as tantalite, columbite, beryl, and quartz crystals had to be developed and procured in quantities never before dreamed of. New uses such as radio and radar created demands for many minerals formerly thought of only as adornments of museum collections and not as pressing industrial minerals. Such minerals were never before mined in quantity.
