Constant-strain rotating-bending fatigue tests were conducted on 2024-T3 aluminum alloy constant-strain McAdams-type specimens in ultrahigh vacuum, 10-lo Torr, and in atmospheric air. In the elastic strain range the ratio of vacuum-to-air fatigue life varied from about 10 at a maximum bending stress of 37 ksi to near unity at the endurance limit. After 10 pct of the fatigue life, intergvanular microcracks appeared on the surface which did not appreciably propagate further until the last 5 pct of the fatigue life, where trans-granular cracks propagating first in slip-plane cracking and then in the stress-dominated mode led to failure. No reduction in residual tensile strength resulted from the fatigue of the specimens short of fracture. The mechanism governing the fatigue life operates between the occurrence of the intergranular microcracks and the initiation of the trans granular cracks. MORE than forty years ago, Mc Adam' and Haigh2 published the first systematic studies showing that the fatigue properties of metals were greatly affected by environments. Gough and sopwith3 found in a later study that the fatigue life of metals subject to corrosion can be substantially increased by reducing the atmospheric pressure. This and their later work4'5 was, however, done in a vacuum of only 10~3 Torr. Subsequent studies6-' at a vacuum of 10- Torr showed that water vapor is the primary agent affecting the fatigue properties of aluminum alloys. Only recently was ultrahigh vacuum used for fatigue studied.l Various theories have been put forward to explain this phenomenon. Wadsworth and Hutchings12 postulated that cracks form very early in the test and that the chemical attack by the corrosive components of the atmosphere at the root of the cracks enhances the speed of the crack propagation. They also noted that chemisorbed layers of gas on the fresh crack surfaces prevent cold welding of the crack and make the separation irreversible. Ham and Reichenbach, on the other hand, reported that their specimens showed no cracks after a run in vacuum, even though the runs were long enough to have caused the specimen to fracture in atmospheric air. They also reported that in argon at 0.14 Torr the fatigue life was about 5 times longer than at 7 X lo-' Torr. Jacisinll reported that fatigue tests in dry nitrogen showed results close to those obtained in ultrahigh vacuum. The present experiment was designed to determine the extent to which cumulative fatigue damage, i.e., the accumulation of length of fatigue cracks, reduces the residual static tensile strength of an aluminum alloy in both ultrahigh vacuum and atmospheric air and to obtain fatigue-life data for this aluminum alloy at various strains. It was also hoped that information ex- tracted from these data might support one of the previously mentioned theories. 1) EXPERIMENT Test Specimens. The material tested was commer-cial 2024-T3 aluminum alloy. In addition to aluminum, this alloy contains approximately 4.4 pct Cu, 0.5 pct Fe, 0.5 pct Si, 0.6 pct Mn, 1.5 pct Mg, plus smaller amounts of other elements.13 Some typical mechanical properties of this aluminum alloy are listed in Table I.'~ The material was used in the as-received condition, i.e., solution-treated and cold-worked. THE North Texas district presented in this paper includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger and Young. It corresponds with the Texas Railroad Commission's district No. 9. Table I conforms with the nomenclature of pools as designated by the Commission. Most of the oil and gas produced in this region, generally referred to as the Red River uplift, comes from the Pennsylvanian strata. In recent years, however, increasing amounts are being developed in both the Mississippian and Ordovician.

On the extreme fringe of' the great Appalachian coal-basin is a long narrow detached coal-field, which is, in some respects, one of the most important in the United States. This field, about 90 miles long by 2½ to 16 miles wide, extends from the southwest corner of Somerset county, Pennsylvania, through Allegany and Garrett counties, Maryland, Mineral, Grant and Tucker counties, West Virginia, into Randolph county, West Virginia. In this distance four distinct sub-districts are recognized, the Wellersburg in Pennsylvania, the Cumberland-Georges creek in Maryland, and the Elk Garden and the Upper Potomac in West Virginia. The output of coal from the whole field including steam, domestic, smithing and coking-coal of the best quality, is about 4,500,000 tons annually. It is the nearest to tide-water of all the bituminous coal-fields which supply the great coal-markets of the Northern Atlantic seaboard ;

In 1956 the discovery of nickel on Jumbo Mountain, Snohomish County, Washington, focused attention on this part of the Cascade Range, far more renowned for its timber than for its mineral resources. Hand specimens assaying as high as 13 pct Ni encouraged Discovery Mines Inc. of Mount Vernon, Wash., to stake 12 claims in Township 31 North, Range 9 East of the Willamette Meridian. The property was leased to Climax Molybdenum Co. in January 1957. Trenching, sampling, and geologic studies were carried out during the late summer of 1957 when most of the snow had disappeared. Although the deposits are only about four miles south of the logging town of Darrington and about two miles, as the crow flies, southeast of the end of a good gravel road from that town, all camp supplies and equipment were air-dropped, owing to the extremely rugged nature of the terrain.

If chemical mining is to work, it is extremely important to watch heat balances. Some reactions with coal give off heat and others absorb heat. The reactions of coal with oxygen or air give off heat, but the reactions of coal with steam or with carbon dioxide absorb heat. By balancing the proportions of the two types of reactions, the energy of the coal can be almost completely recovered and environmental damage is minimized. The chemical reactions are listed in Table 1 in the usual form with subscripts (s) and (g) indicating solid or gaseous materials. In reaction 1, solid corbon, C(s), reacts with gaseous oxygen, O2(g), to produce gaseous carbon dioxide, CO2 (g). H means enthalpy or available heat in the material; F is free energy, and it measures whether the reaction can go at all, and if so, how much.

An automatic surface-follower mechanism was used to measure the surface temperature and the rate of evaporation of molten zinc while undergoing distillation at low pressure. At pressures of 50 to 100 microns Hg, the rate of evaporation may be 60 to 80 pct of the theoretical maximum corresponding to the measured temperature. The rate decreases rapidly at pressures above 100 microns Hg, to only 7 pct of the theoretical maximum at 2000 microns Hg. Measured temperature gradients at the surface are in agreement with theoretical gradients calculated from the heat of vaporization, rate of evaporation, and thermal conductivity of molten zinc. THIS paper covers a series of careful measurements of the rate of evaporation of molten zinc at low pressures, undertaken as a part of a general investigation on the separation of metals by distillation.' Preliminary results on the rate of evaporation of zinc were described in a previous publication.' The results of the preliminary study are as follows: 1—The observed rates of evaporation of zinc were as high as 0.60 g per sq cm per min, corresponding to 75 pct of the maximum rate as determined by the temperature of the metal. 2—The evaporation rate was decreased from 0.30 g per sq cm per min at a pressure of 25 microns to only 0.09 g per sq cm per min when the pressure was increased to 5 mm. 3—The temperature of the surface during rapid evaporation may be 35" to 100°C less than the main mass of metal. Observed temperature gradients at the surface are consistent with those calculated from the heat of vaporization and the thermal conductivity of liquid zinc. In the preliminary experiments, the rate of evaporation was determined from the loss in weight of the metal in the crucible during the test. This was compared with the weight of the condensate. Obviously, this method was subject to error because of some uncertainty as to the period of evaporation that should correspond to the loss in weight. Furthermore, this method did not permit taking into account probable variations in the rate of evaporation during the test. A more serious shortcoming was that the temperature at the evaporating surface was not known, so the maximum theoretical rate of evaporation could not be calculated accurately. To improve the precision of rate measurements and to allow accurate measurements of the surface temperature, a refined experimental technique was developed whereby the temperature and position of the surface could be measured accurately. This was done by an automatic surface-follower mechanism that gave a continuous record of the surface temperature and the amount of zinc evaporated. These data permitted an instantaneous determination of the actual rate of evaporation and the surface temperature throughout the test. Pure zinc (99.99 pct Zn) was used in all experiments. Description of Distillation Furnace The details of construction of the distillation furnace are shown in Fig. l. The furnace is enclosed in a large quartz tube open at one end. The open end of the quartz tube is sealed by means of a water-cooled head. The entire enclosure is vacuum tight. The connection between the water-cooled head and the quartz tube is sealed by means of a rubber gasket which fits tightly against the smooth end of the tube. The metal is heated by induced current set up in the molten zinc and the walls of the graphite crucible by means of a water-cooled induction coil outside the quartz tube. During the summer of 1910, I had the opportunity to study in detail the geological conditions of what is known in northern California as " Harrison gulch," in Shasta county. Though the district, as a whole, that is, the western part of Shasta and the eastern part of Trinity county, has contributed during the last 15 years a considerable share of the gold-production credited to Shasta county, very little is known of its geology, perhaps because the country is covered with a dense growth of brush which makes exploration and prospecting extremely difficult. Topographically the district presents a succession of ridges trending approximately N-S., and alternating with deep, narrow canyons. The drainage is partly into the Sacramento, partly into the Trinity river. Climatic conditions in summer time are almost ideal. It is true, the thermometer may climb to 115°, but the air is dry

PREVIOUS research has shown that cast molyb-denum has good ductility at room temperature if the metal is sufficiently pure. In practice, however, it is very difficult to reduce the impurity content of molybdenum to a few parts per million—the maximum content of impurities allowable to obtain reasonable ductility in coarse-grained molybdenum. Also, subsequent fabrication may reintroduce enough impurity to damage ductility greatly, unless extreme precautions are taken to protect the metal during working. The major impurities which embrittle molybdenum are oxygen, nitrogen and, to a lesser degree, carbon. It is reasonable to assume that the harmful effects of such impurities might be neutralized by small amounts of alloying additions. The desired alloying elements would be those which might fonn stable metal oxides or nitrides that would not be harmful to ductility, or thosewhich might increase the tolerance of molybdenum for oxygen and nitro-

A GENERAL awakening of interest among mill men concerning the mechanical efficiencies of their crushing machines is evident from a perusal of the recent files of mining publications. Considering the large part of the power bill which must be debited to the crushing department, such. interest is natural. When, however, the articles on the subject are read, the only statement upon which the writers agree is that fine grinding consumes a large amount of power, and that the machine which, from a concentration standpoint, offends as a slime producer is, for that reason, a serious offender in wasting power. When the mill man attempts to find a method for measuring the power wasted, or to compare the efficiency of one machine with that of another for the same work, he is confronted with a choice of methods which lead to conflicting results. There are two reasons why the work of crushing is not more generally understood. In the first place, experimental data are difficult to obtain; and in the second place, before these data can be put in general form certain assumptions must be made. A difference in these assumptions by different investigators has led to conflicting conclusions. This conflict has resulted in the proposal of two laws. The first of these is the so-called Rittinger's law, which is variously stated as follows: . "The work of crushing is proportional to the reduction in diameter."-R. H. Richards: Ore Dressing, p. 304 (1903). "The Work required to crush rock is very nearly proportional to the reciprocals of .the diameters crushed to."-A. Results of correlations between strength-development and sintering shrinkage occurring during induration are presented. A mathematical treatment of the shrinkage kinetics is, next, given and is based on the use of semi-empirical equations. The discussion stresses the significance of kinetic constants and activation energies in the assessment of iron ore concentrates for pelletizing and induration. Next, starting with the assumption that there is a need for parameters to characterize the iron-ore concentrates and relate these parameters to shrinkage-kinetic constants and balling behaviour, results of compaction measurements and pore structure characterization (mercury porosimetry) are presented and discussed.

In the routine examinatlion of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of non metallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-frec surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimen. such as tool metals c3o1ltaining various carbide and nitride phases. It, is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work. Procedure The specimen is flattened with considerablecare on a file or sharp cutting sanding belt, since the initial production of a flat surfacc greatly facilitatcs subscqucnt polishing. The polishing motors have two speed., 600 and 1200 r.p.111. ,It higher speeds specimens arc likely to he over-Ileated, therefore the high speed is used only when a saving of time is important. The following abrasive papers are used consecutively: Yo. 2, So. 1, No. 0, No. 00 and No. 000. The final wet polishing is done oil a cloth-covercd metal disk. Woolen broadcloth of the best quality and capable of resisting severe pressure is most commonly used on the last lap. . polishing felt of the type used for polishing optical glass has been found equally satisfactory and is much stronger than broadcloth. IT is a well-known fact that the results of different analysts, when operating on the same identical sample of steel or iron, are far from concordant, and it not infrequently happens that great annoyance and trouble in the commercial community are occasioned by these discrepancies. Attempts have been made at various times to investigate the causes of such differences and to obtain more reliable methods of analysis. The most important of these was made by the British Association in 1889: The following gentlemen, with Sir W. Roberts-Austen as Chairman, and Professor T. Turner as Secretary, were constituted as a committee to investigate the question, viz.: Sir F. A. Abel, Mr. Edward Riley, Mr. G. J. Snelus, Mr. John Spiller, Professor J. W. Langley, and Professor Tilden. Average .samples of steel were prepared in America under the superintendence of Professor J. W. Langley. The steels, in the form of turnings, were divided and distributed to sub-committees in Great Britain, America, France, Germany, and Sweden. Impurity-induced low-temperature recrystallization of cold-worked tungsten was inuestigated with emphasis on the influence of nickel on the reaction. Palladium, nickel, aluminum, manganese, platinum, and iron greatly lower the recrystallization temperature of doped tungsten, which zs normally very high, but the recrystallization temperature of electron-be am zone-refined tungsten wzre is slightly raised by conlacl with nickel. Recrystallization can be induced at low temperature by the presence of solid nickel on the surface of doped tungsten wire, but apparently not by exposure to nickel vapors alone. Approximately 200 ppm of Ni dijjused into 10-mil wires at 1200 from a deposit of nickel on the surface produced total recrystallization, whereas more than 600 ppm of Ni could be absorbed frotn a vapor source without altering the fibrous structure of cold-worked tungsten. Once initiated, nickel-induced recrystallization required a continued source of' nickel for propagation of the recrystallization front. The solubility of nickel in fibrous 10-mil W wire was approximalely 500 ppm at 1150' C, and the activation energy for penetration of the recrystallization front was 52 kcal per mole. In many applications the usefulness of tungsten depends on critical control of its structure. Cold-worked tungsten with the fibrous structure developed by suitable thermo-mechanical treatment has a low, but technologically significant, ductility. It has long been known1 that traces of nickel, and perhaps other metals, are profoundly deleterious in doped tungsten, because they induce recrystallization at low temperature, which produces a brittle, equiaxed grain structure. This effect appears to be an exception to the general observation that recrystallization is impeded and the recrystallization temperature raised by the presence of impurities.2"9 Previous studies7-'' of the annealing and recrystallization of tungsten wire have divided the phenomenon into prior recovery stages, primary recrystallization and secondary recrystallization. The present investigation is concerned principally with primary recrystallization which is defined here as the replacement of the fibrous structure of deformed tungsten by equiaxed grains. The objective of this study was to explore the nickel-induced recrystallization reaction in tungsten and attempt to elucidate its mechanism. As well, an effort to define which other elements give rise to low-temperature-induced recrystallization was carried out. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The procedure adopted for these experiments was essentially to bring nickel and other elements into diffusive contact with cold-worked tungsten wires. The process of recrystallization was followed as a function of time and temperature by light and electron microscopic observations. First the influence of nickel on the recrystallization temperature of arc-melted, zone-refined, and variously doped tungsten wire was determined by electroplating a deposit of nickel on the surface of the wire and annealing at a variety of temperatures for 3 hr. The chemical analyses of the tungsten wires used in this investigation are given in Table I. The surface of the tungsten wire was etched with Murakami's slution' and approximately 0.005 in, of Ni was deposited from a Watts-type low pH bath14 for the conditions of these experiments. Variations in plating thickness from about 0.001 to 0.005 in. had no discernible influence on the resulting structures. The wires were then annealed in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen to establish the recrystallization temperature. Concurrently, un-plated specimens were annealed to establish the recrystallization characteristics of nickel-free wire. The criterion of recrystallization was that the fibrous structure be completely replaced by equiaxed grains after a 3-hr treatment of temperature. This provided more reproducible results than use of the first recrystallized grain or a fixed proportion of re-crystallized structure as the critical observation. The structures encountered in longitudinal and transverse sections were examined by both light and electron microscopy at magnifications up to X32,000 using parlo-dion-carbon replicas shadowed with platinum for the latter method. Second, the influence of a variety of metals on the recrystallization temperature of 0.010 in. D alumina-silica doped tungsten wire, AW136-64, was determined. The elements were applied by electroplating whenever possible. Alternatively, they were vapor-plated on the tungsten wire and a greater thickness built up by coating with a dispersion of metal powder in nitrocellulose lacquer. Elements not amenable to either of these procedures were merely slurry coated on the tungsten. The recrystallization temperature was determined as above. Third, the nickel-induced recrystallization process in doped wire was studied more closely by electroplating 8 mils of Ni on 65-mil alumina-silica doped tungsten wire, AW153-NS10, and exposing the wire to temperatures of llOO°, 1200°, or 1300°C for various times in a hydrogen atmosphere. A circular recrystallization front, 'Onsisting of equiaxed grains, developed at the periphery Of the coated tungsten wire, and the advance of this front into the fibrous interior was studied. These experiments employed relatively coarse 0.065 in. D wire because the 0.010 in. D wire recrystallized too quickly to permit observation of the pene-

A CERTAIN amount of interest has been indicated recently in the resistance to oxidation at high temperatures of iron-aluminum alloys (rich in iron). Hautman1 published a paper in. which some interesting results are given. According to his paper, only alloys containing at least 8 per cent aluminum indicate a marked improvement in their resistance to oxidation. At about this aluminum content, however, alloys become brittle, which considerably reduces their commercial value. About two years ago the author, performed a series of experiments, the results of which are presented here. A series of iron-aluminum-carbon alloys was prepared by melting electrolytic iron, aluminum and high-carbon iron alloy in an induction vacuum furnace.2 The list of these alloys is given in Table 1. The Geology Div. of Northern Pacific Railway Co. has adapted to its exploration efforts field procedures for geochemical sampling and semi-quantitative analysis which have been developed through research by the U. S. Geological Survey. The sampling is done in conjunction with reconnaissance geologic mapping on aerial photographs or during field checking of maps which have been prepared largely by photo-geologic interpretation. Stream sediment or soil samples are taken and readily soluble combined heavy metals are extracted with ammonium citrate followed by colorimetric titration with dithizone at the sample site. The effectiveness of this approach has been demonstrated both in positive and negative results, thereby assisting in the elimination of large areas of land from further immediate attention and in providing targets for followup exploration. An occa sional sample is submitted for spectrographic analysis as a check on the possible presence of other elements of economic significance. Field laboratory procedures are also being implemented for determining molybdenum, mercury, and other metals which may be valuable in themselves or useful as pathfinder elements in outlining mineralized areas. A lead-zinc occurrence in Oregon and a copper deposit in Montana were readily detected and outlined by stream sediment and soil sampling and a heavy metal anomaly that lacks obvious interpretation has been found in northwestern Montana. Detailed mapping and additional sampling are followed by other exploration techniques if warranted. Northern Pacific's program of reconnaissance mineral evaluation of company-owned lands and adjoining areas was outlined in a paper presented at the American Mining Congress meeting in Las Vegas four years ago. That report included policies and procedures with respect to mineral development on Railway Co. lands and may be referred to for information on these matters.1 In a sense this paper is a progress report on the use of geochemical prospecting in Northern Pacific's continuing mineral evaluation program. At this time there are positive results but as yet there is no real success story in the form of a minable ore body. GEOCHEMICAL PROSPECTING PROCEDURES The decision to use geochemistry as a reconnaissance exploration tool must be followed by research into sampling and analytical methods and into the interpretation of results. Various analytical methods were tried and evaluated by the Geology Div., including hot and cold acid extraction with and without fusion of the sample, panning and magnetic separation followed by dithizone testing of the magnetite, and cold aqueous extraction of metallic ions followed by indicator tests. Samples were first sent to the laboratory for analysis; later field laboratories were established and now virtually all testing is done at the sample site. It was concluded that, where applicable, the quickest dependable methods for reconnaissance use are the dithizone field tests for readily extractable heavy metals. This involves the simultaneous treatment of a sample, usually of soil or stream sediment, with two immiscible liquids; one a cold aqueous extractant (ammonium citrate) and the other a solution of dithizone in toluene or xylene.2 Dithizone is a colorimetric indicator that reacts quantitatively with copper, lead, zinc, and several other metals to form colored complexes in organic solvents. Results may be expressed in ml of 0.001 pct dithizone that are required to reach the blue end point, or calibration of the test results can be carried out with standard solutions of zinc; conversion factors would then be expressed in ppm, zinc equivalent. Calibration of dithizone solution with zinc standards indicates that 1 ml of 0.001 pct dithizone is equivalent to approximately 0.25 ppm of zinc. An authoritative report on dithizone field tests authored by H. E. Hawkes in the June-July 1963 issue of Economic Geology* states "The appeal of these techniques has been the simplicity and speed of the determinations as compared with more tedious laboratory determinations of trace metals in weathered rocks, soils, or plant materials. This paper generalizes the results of the recent theoretical and experimental investigations on the air-pulsated jigs in Japan. The pulsating mechanism is analyzed as a special vibratory system, and the jigging mechanism as a mass system subjected to the law of hindered settling. The results of investigations on the following items are reviewed: dynamics of the pulsating mechanism; pulsation in a practical TACUB jig development of a new type of air valve; uniform pulsation in a large Baum jig; motion and mobility of bed particles; separating speed in hindered conditions; and standard deviation in practical jigs.

As this paper is written, the only method for the commercial production of lithium metal is by the fusion electrolysis of LiCl-KCl mixtures, as first proposed by Guntz.2 The details of the industrial process have not been made public but Osborg8 stated that an efficiency of more than go pct is obtained with a lithium metal recovery above 95 pct and that the metal is 99.5 pct pure. Pletenev9 gave a power consumption of 66 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium metal produced with a salt consumption of 9 kg of LiCl and 0.4 kg of KCI. Pletenev's figures indicate a somewhat lower recovery than that given by Osborg. In a recent report on German lithium plants, Motock7 gives figures that are also less favorable than those reported by Osborg. At the German plants the lithium recovery in electrolysis was only 83.4 pct, with a power consumption of too kw-hr per kilogram of lithium. The metal averaged only 97 pct pure, with sodium and potassium as the chief impurities. The presence of SO2, SO3, Si02, Ba, Ca, and appreciable amounts of Na and Fe2O3 were especially disturbing in the electrolysis, and it was necessary to run the cell for some time to eliminate most of these impurities and condition the bath. It may be noted here that most of these impurities do not interfere with a thermal reduction process. These facts show that the present method of producing lithium is fairly efficient and would suggest that other methods could not compete. However, fusion electrolysis has certain drawbacks, such as the necessity of supplying costly, low-voltage direct current and of collecting and processing the anodic chlorine if it is not to be wasted. An even greater disadvantage is that lithium chloride must be used for an electrolyte. It is one of the most expensive salts of lithium, since it cannot be produced in anhydrous form by precipitation from aqueous solution, as is done with LiF or Li2CO3. The reduction of lithium by a vacuum process similar to the ferrosilicon method for the production of magnesium would have certain advantages. Small units, such as Pidgeon retorts, would give flexibility of production to meet demand, and a small plant would require moderate capital outlay. There is a possibility of using idle Government-owned magnesium plants for such purposes. The raw materials needed for vacuum thermal reduction would not have to be extremely pure, especially with respect to the iron and calcium content. The petroleum industry includes varied and extensive operations required to supply increasing quantities of refined petroleum products and natural gas that are essential for the economic progress of an expanding population Petroleum has provided the power for the transformation from the "horse and buggy days" to the age of jets and space exploration, and for the remarkable improvement in productivity per worker in agriculture and manufacturing. Without increasing quantities of oil and gas, the world would face painful readjustments to more expensive forms of energy and lower standards of living Petroleum operations start with exploration, development, and production activities that supply the basic crude oil and natural gas Pipelines, ships, barges, and trucks first transport the raw materials to processing centers and then move the finished products to the ultimate consumers. Processing plants extract liquids from natural gas and refineries convert crude oil into a wide range of products These products include transportation fuels, feedstocks for conversion into numerous products (such as fabrics, rubber, and plastics), light fuels for heating, lubricants, and heavy residual materials (industrial fuel oil, asphalt, and coke) The final activity of wholesale distribution and retail marketing moves products into millions of homes, farms, industrial plants, and motor vehicles The use of coal exceeded that of oil and gas until 1946 in the United States and until 1968 in the rest of the world. However, oil and gas have proved to be such convenient and attractively priced fuels that they now supply three-fourths of the total commercial energy (including coal, hydroelectric, and nuclear power) used in North America and more than one-half in the rest of the world. LARGE SCALE OF OPERATIONS By the beginning of 1970, world crude oil production exceeded 43 million bbl daily, -equivalent to more than 2200 million tpy In addition, natural gas and the liquids recovered from processing natural gas supply about 40% as much energy as crude oil Production of oil and gas provide by far the highest value of all mining operations.
