John Dasher (Central Research Laboratory, Crucible Steel Co. of America, Pittsburgh. Pa.)— Getting spodumene to float quickly and cleanly can be a problem. The author has presented an excellent account of a valid and useful approach to the scale-up of such problem floats. This indicated advantages for doubling retention time, i.e., buying another set of flotation cells. The author states that 21 pct of the spodumene floated in 2 min in the laboratory cell, that the grade of the rougher was about 75 pct spodumene, and that the final tailing contained 4 to 12 pct spodumene in different sizes with the present cells and 1 to 9 pct spodumene with twice as many cells. About 20 years ago, this writer obtained in the laboratory the flotation of over 90 pct of this spodumene in a King's Mountain sample in 1 min at a grade of 90 pct spodumene in the rougher and a final tailing that contained only 1 pct spodumene. The methods of Norman, Ralston," and Gieseke' were used, which teach that spodumene floats quickly and cleanly if its surfaces have been properly conditioned chemically and/or mechanically prior to flotation. Although feed preparation is not discussed, the results reported indicate that it is inadequate. This writer suggests that improvements in this area might be more effective than doubling the number of cells. W. E. Horst (author's reply)—Dasher's comments are appreciated by the author and require some clarification. He suggests that improved spodumene flotation performance may be obtained by feed preparation techniques rather than increased retention time in flotation. Certainly flotation performance is dependent on feed preparation and this is an important feature in the flotation process. It is true that certain types of spodumene ores, particularly weathered ores, require more complicated feed preparation processing than clean ores to achieve the desired flotation results. It was not implied that current feed preparation techniques are the same as experienced during the scale-up investigations. Although discussion of feed preparation was omitted from the article on scale-up relationships, the important feature was that pre-treatment processing was the same for each level of operation investigated— laboratory, pilot plant, and plant scale. Under these similar conditions large differences existed in recovery for comparable time intervals in each scale of operation. It is highly probable that feed preparation techniques could be modified and thereby increase the flotation rate for each scale or all scales of operation discussed. However, modifications would have to be justified on an economic basis.

An approximate expression is obtained for the energy of a closed dislocation loop in equi1ibriu)n with a constant net stress. The result obtained is valid for loops in isotropic or anisotropzc materials provided that they are suJficiently large that the energy per unit length of a segment of the loop can be approximated by that of an infinite straight dislocation tangent to the loop. It is shown that this approximation leads to very close agreement with a more rigorous calculation of the elastic energy of a circular glide loop. The Gibbs-Wulff Form, GWF, of a dislocation is the closed planar loop which has the smallest elastic self-energy of all possible loops having the same Burgers vector and enclosing a fixed area, A.' The energy of such a loop is related to the net resolved shear stress* required to expand the loop and to the stress required to activate a Frank-Read source.223 In the following sectiorls the problem of determining the form of the GWF is discussed and an approximate method for calculating its elastic self-energy is presented. It is demonstrated that the approximations employed lead to no serious errors when applied to a calculation of the elastic energy of a circular glide loop. This method is then used to obtain a closed form expression for the energy of GWFs in isotropic and anisotropic materials. THEORY Burton, Frank, and cabrera4 have proved that the relationship of the equilibrium shape of a two-dimensional array of atoms under the influence of the Gibbs free energy associated with unit length of its boundary, G(O), is that the polar plot of G(0) vs 0 is proportional to the pedal of the GWF.* The angle 0 is measured "The pedal of the polar graph ofG(0) vs0 is the envelope of tangents to the eraph.relative to some crystallographic reference direction. The difficulty in applying this result to a closed dislocation loop arises from the self-interaction of the loop. For a dislocation the energy analogous to G(0) is a function of the total configurati~n.~ Consequently the relation which determines the GWF is an integro-differential equation rather than the simple differen- tial equation which results when G(8) is a function of 0 alone. Mitchell and smialek3 and Brown~ have used the self-stress concept introduced by ~rown' to calculate the shapes of dislocations in equilibrium with an applied stress. In this approach the glide force on an element of the dislocation loop due to the interaction of the element with the rest of the loop is equated to the glide force exerted by the local applied stress. The shape of the loop is then adjusted so that the two forces above are equal at all points on the loop. It is possible to calculate the energies of such loops by noting that, for equilibrium with an applied stress, the energy is equal to pijbiAj (summation convention) where bi is the Burgers vector, p.. is the local net stress tensor, and Ai is a vector directed perpendicular to the plane of thd loop with magnitude equal to the area of the loop. Also Brown' has calculated the energy of a hypothetical polygonal GWF using the above technique and anisotropic elasticity. However, his indicated solution for the energy in the general case of an arbitrary GWF is only slightly less involved than an iterative solution of the integrodifferential equation referred to earlier. In the present work the approximation employed by DeWit and Koehler' is used to calculate the energy of a closed loop in equilibrium with an applied stress. That is, the energy of a loop segment, ds, is approximated by the product of ds and the energy per unit length of an infinite, straight dislocation in a cylinder coaxial with the tangent to the loop at the angular position of the segment. This is known as the "line tension" approximation. The inner cutoff radius of the elastic solution defines the core radius, while the outer cutoff radius is determined by some characteristic dimension of the loop. Actually, both of these radii vary with the edge-screw character of the segment. The effective core radius changes because of the orientation dependence of the Peierls width of a dislocation,8 and the outer radius should be the radial distance from the circumference of the loop to the center of symmetry of the area enclosed by the loop.g However, since the energy varies logarithmically with the ratio of these radii while depending directly on the effective elastic constants, only the effect of the latter is considered. This approximation also neglects the self-interaction of the loop segments. For small loops this will doubtless be extremely important, but for large glide loops produced by plastic deformation the self-interaction is not nearly so important in determining the energy of the loop. This point is illustrated by the following calculation of the energy of a circular loop. Consider a circular loop of radius R which lies in the XI - x, plane of an infinite isotropic continuum and whose Burgers vector makes an angle $ with xs. Frontino operates three underground lode mines at Segovia in the area of northwest Antioquia, Colombia, which has been an important gold producing district since the late 1800s. Auriferous pyrite, the pre-dominent sulfide, carries very finely disseminated gold. Other minor sulfides are galena, pyrrhotite, and sphalerite in quartz gangue with the host rock being granodiorite. Silver is associated with the galena and also occurs as a sulfo-salt. In 1.973 and 1974, at an annual milling rate of 145,000 mt (160,000 st), average mill heads were 7.80 g per mt (0.23 oz per st) Au; 20.0 g per mt (0.58 oz per st) Ag; and 0.37% Pb; with a production of 1,150 kg (35,700 oz) Au and 4,500 kg (141,000 oz) Ag. Over 300 mt (330 st) of Pb concentrate were shipped. The ore is crushed to minus 16 mm (5 18 in. ) and fed to a rod mill with the discharge passing over a 1.07 m by 1.07 m (42 in. by 42 in. ) jig operating in closed circuit with the underflow from a cyclone in closed circuit with two ball mills. Cyclone overflow is bulk-floated for sulfide recovery from which the tailings are sent to the river as waste with the flotation concentrate joining the jig concentrate for cyanidation. The combined gold bearing concentrates, after cyclone classification, are reground to a very fine mesh in closed circuit with cyclone classification, with the overflow going to the primary thickener. Regrinding, classification, and thickening is done in cyanide solution, and the primary thickener produces a pregnant solution for Merrill -Crowe precipitation. The thickener underflow is the feed to the agitators, thickener, and filter from which the overflow and filtrate are sent to precipitation. The washed filter cake is repulped and floated for the recovery of a galena concentrate for shipment. About 40% of the recovered silver is in this concentrate. In the refinery the precipitate is melted into a dore bullion. This 600 mt (660 st) capacity mill employs several interesting techniques. Gold recovery of 85% to 90% from a complex sulfide denotes good practice. While total power at 42 kwh per mt (46 kwh per st) is high, it would be recognized that the grinding units are small in size and the flowsheet is complicated due to the gold occurring in the sulfide minerals. Discussion of the paper of W. R. Shimer and F. O. Kichline, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 81, September, 1913, pp. 2361 to 2377. ALLERTON S. CUSHMAN,* Washington, D. C.:-I have been much interested in Mr. Shimer's valuable contribution. The apparent fact that the oxides of certain metals which are not reduced by hydrogen per se, are reducible when the oxides are dissolved in iron in small quantity, is brought out for the first time, and is worthy of the careful attention of investigators. The Ledebur method has been subjected to considerable criticism, owing to the alleged fact that it did not measure the oxygen combined with impurities. Personally I have found the method extremely helpful in spite of the minute quantities of oxygen with which it deals. Mr. Shinier points out that the highest oxygen he obtained by over-blowing was 0.074 per cent., while the minimum quantity in a properly finished steel was in the neighborhood of 0.02 per cent. The Ledebur method is used as a constant check on the quality of heats made in practice under my direction. In dealing with a very pure commercial iron, we should expect to find and would find difficulty in galvanizing sheets made from a heat running 0.07 per cent. oxygen. In fact, we do not like to have the oxygen rise above 0.03 per cent. I am inclined to agree with the author that excessive oxygen leaves a bath of metal in a very short time, but nevertheless I believe it takes only a very little combined oxygen to begin to make its presence felt in the pickling and galvanizing department, when sheet metal is the product manufactured. As Mr. Shimer points out, the higher the carbon, the lower the oxygen danger, and it is partly for this reason that the manufacture of carbon-free metal in the open-hearth furnace has to be so very carefully watched and controlled from the furnace through to the finished product. It is quite possible that, there is a critical temperature of dissociation between iron and oxygen, although the critical points may vary in baths of different carbon content. Unfortunately, the accurate determination of the temperature of a molten bath at the time of pouring or teeming is a very difficult matter. (communication to the Secretary) : In his remarks on crushing-machinery, Mr. Douglas says (Twins., xxii., p. 322): "To insure a smaller and more uniform size of particles in the crushed material, the Dodge crusher still communicates motion to the upper extremity of tile movable jaw, which oscillates on fixed pivots projecting from its lower extremity!' The notion that, in order to obtain a fine and uniform product from a rock-breaker, the movable jaw must be pivoted at its lower extremity, seems to obtain generally among mill-men, as well as among manufacturers of machinery. My experience with machines of both types does not confirm this belief. It is true that, to obtain a uniformly fine product from a jaw-crusher, the stroke at the lower extremity of the crushing-surface must be short; but that the movement at that end must be less than at the other or receiving-end is, I think, an erroneous assumption. Figs. 1 and 2 are intended to illustrate the two types of machine. It is found in practice that the capacity and the nature of the product of either machine, as usually constructed, are governed by the opening, C D, and the length of stroke of the movable jaw at D. This being the case, machines of either type, of the same width of crushing-surface, running at the same speed, and having the same adjustment as to opening and stroke at D, should give, when fed

Many direct processes have been proposed for the treatment of oxidized ores of copper by reducing the copper oxide to the metallic state, and by separating it from its impurities by a subsequent fusion. The radical objection common to all the methods which have come to my notice, except those in which sulphur plays the prominent part, is that the very deoxidizing agent which effects the reduction of the copper oxide, inevitably reduces at the same time a very considerable part, if not the whole, of the iron which almost invariably accompanies copper in its ores. The result is that, when the ore is subsequently fused, a very great quantity of the already reduced iron separates from the slag along with the copper, alloying with it, and necessitating costly subsequent operations for its separation. Thus, at Perm, in the Urals," the product of the fusion of ferrnginous copper oxides is a mixture of one hundred and fifty-tive parts of highly cupriferous pig iron with two hundred and fire parts of very impure and ferruginous black copper, containing Pome 10 per cent. of' carbon and iron, though free from sulphur, and of course very difficult to refine. If, in order to avoid this reduction of iron to the metallic state, the reducing action be made feebler, it inevitably results that a considerable part of the copper as well escapes deoxidation; and, consequently, the slags are so rich that it becomes necessary to treat them subsequently in order to recover the copper which they contain. Thus,. in treating native copper, at Lake Superior, where the reducing action is purposely made feeble in order to prevent the deoxidation of the iron, the slags from the first fusion of the ore carry so much copper as to render it imperative to treat them again, which is done in a cupola. And yet, in spite of so far weakening the reducing action as to cause a notable slagging of the copper, a very considerable reduction of iron actually takes place. These are the two dangers which threaten the smelter of oxidized copper ores. If he wishes to avoid slagging his copper, he must have so strong a deoxidizing action as to reduce a great deal of his

The deposit of rock-salt which is known to exist along the eastern shore of Lake Huron, in the province of Ontario, has lately been more completely explored than before, by a boring with a diamond drill, put down by Henry Attrill, Esq., of New York City, and the results obtained are so important in every way that I make no apology for presenting them to the Institute of Mining Engineers. I may be permitted to preface an account of this remarkable exploration, and of its results, with a historical sketch of the discovery and development of this salt-region. It was in December, 1865, that a boring was begun near the town of Goderich, in the hope of finding petroleum. In this the adventurers were disappointed, but, after passing through about 800 feet of limestone, they encountered a series of variegated marls, in which, at a, depth of 964 feet from the surface, a bed of rock-salt, 30 feet in thickness, was met with in May, 1866. The boring was carried to a depth of 1010 feet, ending in hard rock, and yielded, by pumping, a very pure saturated brine when examined by me in August of the same year. In the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for 1863-66, published early in 1867, I described this salt-well, with many geological details, and gave an analysis of the brine. In the next three years a considerable number of wells was sunk in and around Goderich, and numerous trials were made in various other parts of the region. Salt was found at Kincardine, thirty miles north-northeast from Goderich, at a depth of about 900 feet, and also at Clinton, thirteen miles southeast, at 1180 feet. Records of these wells, with analyses of the brine from them, were given by myself in a subsequent report of the Geological Survey, 1866-69, published in 1870 (pp. 211-244), together with accounts of various unsuccessful borings in the neighborhood, analyses of the brines from the various wells (including one analysis by Dr. Goessmann), with many details of the salt-manufacture at Goderich, at Syracuse, New York, and at Saginaw, Michigan. The geological character of the region was there discussed at length, and it was shown that the salt here occurs in the Onondaga or Salina formation, which

This stove has been designed to meet the requirements of a fur nave that must be operated with either a reducing or a neutral flame ; and more particularly to make feasible the operating of re duction-furnaces with the cheaper grades of gas-fuel, which has heretofore been impracticable. In general, cheap gas-fuels result from incomplete combustion, and, being suited for further combustion, answer very well for heat ing purposes; and high temperatures may be attained with them, when they are used in conjunction with regenerative stoves. But, in operating a reduction-furnace, a high temperature is not the only requirement. It is also necessary that the fuel shall not be cansumed beyond a certain degree, in order to insure a re ducing flame for the reduction-process ; consequently, it becomes necessary to dispense with combustion as much as possible previous to the use of the fuel-gases in the reduction-furnace. Moreover, these gases must be preheated to a high degree, in order that a sufficient temperature may be maintained in the furnace; and, since this preheating cannot be accomplished by a previous, partial combustion of the gases themselves, it follows that the stoves for pre heating these gases should be heated to as high degree as it is pos sible to attain with an inferior fuel. This result can best be accom plished by complete combustion of the heating gases, and is further facilitated by preheating all of the air and gas used for this com plete combustion. It is more particularly desirable to preheat the air, since the combustible gases used may generally be obtained directly from the furnace, or gas-producer. The reducing gases, escaping from a gas-fuel reduction-furnace, are capable of considerable further dilution with air to secure com plete combustion, and consequently may be utilized for heating the stove to a high temperature, provided the air be sufficiently preheated.

Self-diffilsion coefficients for cr51 and Fe55 in 12 pct Cr-Fe and 17 pct Cr-Fe for Fe55 in chromium, and for Cr51 in vanadium have been measured. The results are compared with other values for the Fe-Cr system, and with the various theories of diffusion in hcc metals. Some empirical correlations are discussed between Do and Q in hcc systems, or, expressed differently, the constancy of ?G*/T solidus for seveval bcc metals and alloys is noted. It appears very probable that a vacancy mechanism is operative in bcc metals, hut this cannot he stated with certainty. THE great bulk of work on diffusion in metals, both experimental and theoretical, was for many years concentrated on those with close-packed and, in particular, fcc lattices.1,2 There appears to be little doubt that the mechanism of diffusion in these solids is vacancy migration, leading to mass transfer and in substitutional solid solutions to a Kirken-dall effect.3,4 For bcc metals, the picture is much less clear. The Kirkendall effect certainly occurs in several alloys.5-10 However, attempts to understand the factors contributing to the pre-exponential in the usual expression for the diffusion coefficient D =D, exp {-Q/RT) by extension of ideas useful in close-packed lattices have not always been successful. Zener,11 Leclaire,12 and Pound, Paxton, and Bitlerl3 have suggested that various forms of ring diffusion may be important in some bcc metals. For close-packed metals, Do is usually about 1 sq cm per sec and Q - 35Tm kcal per mole (Tm = melting temperature in OK). The theory of Pound et al. suggests for ring diffusion that Do may be about 10-4 and Q, although difficult to calculate with any precision, would be significantly less than 35 T,. The experimental results on self and solute diffusion in ? uranium14,15 and ß zirconium,10 and for solutes in 0 titanium,17 and possibly for self-diffu- sion in chromium below about 0.75 T,," gave some credence to this theory. However, not all bcc materials display low values of DO and Q, and the exceptions were not predicted by any theory. Furthermore, it has recently become apparent that, in bcc materials, log D is not always linear with T-l if a sufficiently wide range of temperature is studied.16,18 This variation may be such that Q may increase18,19 or decrease20 with increasing temperature. The present work was undertaken in an attempt to provide further diffusion data on bcc metals, and to try to understand the factors which contribute to differences in behavior between the various elements. For part of this work, the Fe-Cr system was chosen since it is of considerable technological importance, and data on 12 pct Cr and 17 pct Cr alloys appeared well worthwhile to supplement that existing for the remainder of the stern.18,22 The diffusion of Fe55 in chromium was studied as an example of a more or less "normal" tracer element in a possibly abnormal host lattice. Finally, no data were available for vanadium, the neighbor of chromium in the periodic table, because of lack of a suitable isotope so cr55 was used as a tracer in a few preliminary experiments. For convenience, we shall refer to elements whose Do and Q are low compared to those predicted by Zener's theory as "anomalous". PROCEDURE This investigation determined self-diffusion rates by means of radioactive tracers and the integral-activity method first utilized by Gruzin.23 In this method a thin layer of radioisotope of the diffusing element is plated or coated onto a planar surface of the diffusion sample, which is then given an isothermal-diffusion annealing treatment. The determination of an activity-penetration curve involves measuring the residual activity of the specimen after each successive layer or section has been removed parallel to the original planar surface. The method used here is essentially the same as that used by Gondolf18 and Kunitake.21 Two radioactive tracers, cr51 and Fe55, were used in this investigation. Diffusion coefficients were determined for the diffusion of one or both of these tracers in four different materials, viz., Fe-12 wt pct Cr alloy, Fe-17 wt pct Cr alloy, chromium, and vanadium. The diffusion samples had nominal dimensions of 1.5 cm diameter and 0.5 cm thickness. The grain size was several millimeters for the Fe-Cr alloys and at least 1 mm for the chromium and vanadium samples. Accurately planar surfaces

The Lafitte field, the largest oil reserve in South Louisiana, is in Jefferson Parish, some 25 miles due south of the City of New Orleans. The discovery well, The Texas Company's No. I, Louisiana Land and Exploration Co., in the southeast corner of sec. 19, T. 17 S., R. 24 E., was completed on May 15, 1935. The initial production of this well was 960 bbl. of 34.9º A.P.I, gravity oil per day, through 1/4-in. choke, with a tubing pressure of 1600 lb. per sq. in. Producing depth was 9558 to 9572 ft., the total depth being 9572 feet. The development of the field has been at the rate of three to eight new producing wells per year. Up to Jan. I, 1944, 60 producing wells and three dry holes had been drilled, while two of the original producing wells had been abandoned, Although the field is not unitized, The Texas Company was the sole operator in the field until the Lafitte Oil Co. completed its NO. I Jefferson Parish, near the center of the west line of the NW/4 sec. 20, T. I7 S., R. 24 E., on July 27, 1941. No additional wells have been drilled by the Lafitte Oil Company. Drilling and WeLl-completion Practices All drilling operations have been conducted with the steam-driven rotary equipment mounted on submersible barges. A canal is dug to the well location and the drilling unit is floated into position. The seacocks are then opened and the barge settles to the bottom. After the well is completed, seacocks are closed and water is pumped out of the barge. This procedure permits the barge, with drilling equipment still in place, to be floated and moved off the location. The conventional open-hole and the gun-perforation method of completing wells has been used in this field. Where possible, the initial completion is from the deepest 'sand and recompletions are made progressively up the hole, by plugging back with cement to the upper sand and gun-perforating opposite the new sand. The oil string usually is 7 5/8 in., 26 to 34-lb. casing. Three wells have been completed using 9 5/8-in. 44-lb casing set below 10.000 feet. Fig. I shows the completion and recom-pletion practices on one well in the field. This figure also shows the relative locations of the different producing sands as shown on the electric well log. Structure The structure is an elongated dome, cut by two north-south faults, which divides the field into three segments. The west segment is the highest structurally and contains most of the recoverable oil and gas. The center segment is less important and the east segment is of little value. IN 1924, the Crescent Eagle Oil Co., while drilling the salt section of the Paradox formation in Grand County, Utah, encountered a salt that did not appear to be sodium chloride. This salt was analyzed and showed the presence of potash minerals, both sylvite (KC1) and carnallite (KMgC12.6H20). Because of the high potash content of the sample, there was considerable speculation: (I) as to whether the hole had been salted, and (2), if not, the extent, richness, and the depth at which the deposit occurred. The discovery caused a large amount of activity in the area. During the next few years, 68 potash prospecting permits were issued by the Government, 24 under the Act of 1917 and 44 under the Act of Feb. 7, 1927, each including about four sections of land. Several holes, all shallow, were drilled for potash. A number of holes were drilled for oil into the salt horizon and the cuttings collected at the oil wells were examined petrographically and chemically. The shallow test holes were not sufficiently deep to reach the potash horizon and revealed nothing of value, but several of the oil test holes gave some indication of where potash might be found. LOCATION AND GEOLOGY OF DEPOSITS The potassium and magnesium salts have been found in various places from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks about seven miles west of Thompsons, in eastern Utah, to Cane Creek, a tributary of the Colorado Rivera distance north and south of about 35 miles. In this locality, there appear to be five separate deposits: the Crescent Eagle area, which is in T. 22 S., R. 19 E.; the Salt Valley area, in the vicinity of the north-south line of T. 23 S., between R. 20 E. and R. 21 E.; the Seven Mile area, in the eastern part of T. 25 S., R. 2o E.; the Cane Creek area, on the Colorado River, in T. 26 S. and T. 27 S., R. 2o E. and R. 21 E.; and the Salt Wash area, in T. 22 S. and T. 23 S., R. 16 E. and R. 17 E. (Fig. I.) The Crescent Eagle and Salt Valley areas are in the Salt Valley anticline, some of the wells being in the fault graben and others outside. Structurally, the Salt Valley anticline is very complex, and can be described in general terms as a northwesterly plunging collapsed anticline about 15 miles long. In the Crescent Eagle area, the valley graben is about 1 mile wide and the salt probably forms a plug, the apex of which is in the vicinity of the Crescent Eagle well. Owing to the complex structure, there has been every opportunity for flowage in the salt to cause local thinning or thickening of beds. Three explosives with different detonation characteristics were tested by studying their cratering ability in a granite-gneiss. The strain wave generating characteristics of these explosives were also studied in the same rock medium. Correlations between the relative performance of three explosives as evaluated by crater studies and other methods of evaluation are indicated. Numerous test methods have been employed to evaluate the output performance of explosives; for example, the underwater explosion method, the airblast method and the ballistic pendulum method.'*' For blasting applications, the study of explosion produced craters and explosion generated strain waves are the most meaningful. This laboratory has employed these techniques extensively for many years and has shown that the detonation properties of explosives and their ability to generate strain waves in rock are related and that the amplitude and shape of the strain wave is related to some of the crater parameters such as slab thickness and fly rock velocity.3'11 However, a good comparison between the relative performance of explosives as determined by the crater and strain wave methods had not been made. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the relative performance of three explosives as determined by the crater method shows a correlation with the relative performance as determined by the strain wave method. If a good correlation exists between these two sets of relative performance, it should then be possible to relate the detonation properties of an explosive to its ability to break rock in a crater test. In most commercial blasting operations, the diameter of the blast hole remains constant even though the type of explosive may change. In general, it is the explosive volume rather than the weight which remains constant when two or more explosives of different density are compared. Therefore all tests in this investigation were conducted on a constant volume basis rather than on a constant weight basis. TEST SITE AND ROCK PROPERTIES The tests described in this paper were conducted at a granite quarry owned and operated by the Consolidated Quarries Div. of the Georgia Marble Co. at Lithonia, Ga. The tests were performed in an area where the exposed rock surface was nearly horizontal and where the general rock mass had few joints or faults. The rock has an apparent sp gr of 2.6 and a longitudinal propagation velocity of 18,000 fps. The characteristic impedance of Lithonia granite gneiss is 53(lb - sec/in3). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE There are many parameters which must be considered in the study of explosion-produced craters. The role played by each variable in the explosive-rock-crater system can be determined by experimental techniques in which one parameter is varied while others are maintained constant. In this investigation, the crater geometry was studied as the depth was varied for each of three explosives. The explosive volume and rock-type were held constant for all crater tests. The experimental arrangement used in performing the crater tests is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1.

The copper concentrator of the Braden Copper Co. is at Sewell, Chile, on the westem flank of the main Cordillera of the Andes, at an air distance of approximately 50 miles southeast of Santiago, the capital of Chile. The region is mountainous and space is at a premium because of the rough terrain and the danger of snowslides. The ore, a porphyry copper, is mined by a block-caving method in the El Teniente mine. It is hauled to the crushing plant, a distance of 2.6 miles, through a tunnel because of the severe climatic conditions. The usual large, coarsely set, primary reduction machines found in many ore-treating plants are not required because of the mining method employed and the limiting 12-in. spacing of the grizzlies at the head of each ore pass in the mine. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the numerous improvements made in the crushing section of this large flotation concentrator during the past I5 years to increase the efficiency of the plant and to raise the daily output from around 20,000 to 30,000 tons. The reader should keep in mind that all changes were made within the existing building because of the limited space and the high cost of the heavy mill construction required to withstand the snow loads. The present plant, as well as the former, operates on a 24-hr, 7 days a week basis. The crushing plant commenced operations at its present site in 1921, the main equipment being No. 7½ gyratories, followed by 48-in. horizontal Symons disk crushers. Fines were removed by I-in. stationary grizzlies ahead of each unit. In 1924 a third stage of crushing was provided by the addition of 55½-in. rolls in open circuit. During 1925, the Symons disks were replaced by 73½-in. rolls. All the rolls were changed to closed circuit, with elevators and screens to give a final product of 9 pct plus 3-mesh. The flowsheet of a typical crushing section of this period is shown in Fig I. The ore was withdrawn from a common bill serving the five crushing sections in the plant by means of any number up to six 36-in. wide-apron feeders, which discharged onto a common conveyor belt. This conveyor was equipped with a magnetic head pulley and the crusher attendant was stationed near the discharge end to pick out pieces of mine timber that might be in the ore. The ore was discharged over a 13/4-in. spaced bar grizzly and the oversize of this grizzly was crushed by a No. 7½ McCully gyratory crusher set at 13/4-in. opening on the closed side. The grizzly undersize joined the gyratory discharge and was conveyed to a set of 73½ by 20-in. Garfield rolls set at I in. These rolls operated in closed circuit with a bucket elevator and two vibrating screens placed in parallel.

Bauxite is known mainly as the ore from which aluminum is smelted but it has large use also in the manufacture of artificial abrasives and in the production of a number of useful chemicals as well as of aluminous cement "ciment fondu." An important and growing use is in the manufacture of refractory products. Composition Dana and earlier mineralogists gave the mineral formula of bauxite as A1203.21120 and the composition as A1202, 73.9 pct; H2O, 26.1 pct. A specific mineral of this composition has, however, never been identified by either microscopic, chemical or X ray examination, and therefore it is concluded that bauxite is a rock consisting of one or more aluminum minerals together with impurities. The term is now used synonymously with aluminum ore and it embraces gibbsite (hydrargillite or alpha trihydrate), A1203. 3H20 (A1203, 65.4 pct; H2O, 34.6 pct); boehmite (alpha monohydrate), A1203•H20 (A1202, 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct) ; diaspore (beta monohydrate), A1203•H20 (A1203, 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct), and mixtures in various proportions of any two of them. Bauxite of the Mediterranean region in Europe is predominantly boehmite, as in France and Istria, subordinately a mixture of gibbsite and boehmite, as in Dalmatia, or of boehmite (or gibbsite) and diaspore, as in Greece. The bauxite of North and South America, tropical Africa, Asia, and Australasia consists largely of gibbsite, but boehmite in appreciable amount occurs in many places. Corundum (A1202) is not included un¬der bauxite, although gradations from bauxite to emery or corundum exist. All bauxite, irrespective of the aluminum minerals composing it, contains certain impurities in variable amount, including silica in the form of clay minerals (kaolinite, halloy site, and others) or quartz, iron oxide (as hematite or goethite), titania (as leucoxene or rutile), iron sulfide (as pyrite or marcasite), iron carbonate (siderite), and calcium carbonate (as calcite); the last three mentioned in minor amount and of local occurrence only. Bauxite belongs to a group of partly consolidated materials called laterites, formed by surface weathering. This group includes also impure siliceous, ferruginous, and phosphatic bauxite and siliceous and aluminous iron ores and manganese ores and nickel and chrome laterites. Phosphorus and manganese minerals locally form important impurities in bauxite deposits. Properties Gibbsite is white or light shades of gray, cream or pink. Its hardness is 2.5 to 3.5; specific gravity, 2.3 to 2.4; crystal system, monoclinic, crystals tabular parallel to 001, often fibrous, concretionary, stalactitic; luster, vitreous to pearly; generally translucent; cleavage, parallel to 001; disassociation temperature, approximately 300°C. Boehmite, a relatively new and important mineral described by J. Boehm15 in 1925, confirmed and named by J. de Lapparen64 in 1930, has some properties not yet definitely determined. DURING the winter of 1946 to 1947 potash operations in Germany, France and Spain were visited by the author. The U. S. Department of Commerce, through its Field Intelligence Agency Technical, sponsored the inspection of German properties by representatives of the American Potash Industry. Vast deposits of potash salts occur in the above-mentioned countries, and the production and marketing of these salts are important in their respective economies. Germany An area of some ten thousand square miles of north central Germany is underlain by lenses of potash salts interbedded with greater thicknesses of sodium chloride or common salt. These salt measures are relict deposits from the evaporation of an arm of the Zechstein (Permian) Sea which formerly covered northern Europe. During the peak year of 1940, Germany produced salts containing 1,860,000 tons of K,O and, next to coal, potash is its most important mineral raw material. The German deposits are found in the synclinal areas flanking the Flechtingen, Hartz Mountain and Thuringian uplifts, and, to the north they lie beneath the plains of Hannover. The regional dip of the salt measures is to the north, hence, lenses of potash found at depths of 500 to 1000 m* in the Two general depositional provinces of potash concentrations are recognized: (1) the main basin, and (2) the subsidiary basin. The Pueblo Viejo Mine, a 7, 250 mtpd (8,000 stpd) gold-silver cyanidation plant built by Rosario Dominicana S. A., was described in Volume I of this monograph. At the time of writing that volume, Pueblo Viejo had not yet gone on-stream and operating data or costs could not be presented. Since that time this information has been obtained and several interesting modifications and an expansion have been made to the plant. Because Pueblo Viejo is the largest open-pit gold mine in the world and one of the world's leading gold-silver operations with production of approximately 31 kg (1,000 oz) gold and 125 to 155 kg (4,000 to 5, 000 oz) silver per day, the authors have updated the previous data and flow sheet. The Dominican Government, which held a 4670 interest in Rosario Dominicana S. A., completed purchase of the mine to gain full control in 1979. Rosario Resources will continue to manage the mine, at least until the end of 1980. Gold was produced at Pueblo Viejo almost 500 years ago with initial production in the year 1505. Rosario Resources became interested in the property in 1969 and found surface oxidation had rendered the upper portion of the ore body amenable to direct cyanide treatment. The treatment of the underlying gold-bearing sulfide zone is still undergoing metallurgical studies. The ore is considered to be a laterite; and because there appeared to be few boulders in the ore zone, only a 400 m (16 in. ) square grizzly was initially installed ahead of the mills when the plant went on-stream in late 1974 at a design capacity of 7,250 mtpd (8,000 stpd). Operation also proved the ore to be harder than was originally anticipated. During 1967 a 1. 25 m by 1. 5 m (48 in. by 60 in. ) jaw crusher was installed to -feed the 1, 000 mt (1, 100 st) mill bin. Minus 200 mm (8 in.) crushed ore is fed directly to two 5.5 m by 1. 8 m (18 ft by 6 ft) semi-autogenous mills re-powered with 750 km (1,000 hp) motors and 50 mm (2 in.) grates. Each mill product is screened at 13 mm (1 /2 in.) by a vibrating screen. Screen oversize from each mill is combined on a single return belt equipped with a magnetic head pulley for grinding ball removal. The non-magnetic oversize is then split into two fractions for return to the primary mills. Originally, a minus 6 mm (1/4 in ) product was made on each screen and fed to a 300 kw (400 hp) 2.6 m by 3. 7 m (8-1/2 ft by 12 ft) regrind mill. During a plant expansion in 1978, an intermediate mill of 746 kw (1,000 hp) was installed to operate in open circuit on the combined primary mill

The geological mapping of Lincoln and Flathead Counties was a five-year project undertaken by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology. This paper, written by the Project Geologist of the survey, is primarily concerned with the stratigraphy of the Belt rocks encountered in mapping. Lincoln and Flathead Counties of northwestern Montana are underlain by sedimentary rocks of the Belt Series of Precambrian age. In only a very small part of the area, near Libby and Troy, have economic mineral deposits been worked with any success. Most of the area has been inadequately mapped as to geology. The region is crossed by the Great Northern Railway and served by the Pacific Power and Light Co.; officials of these two companies believed that with better geologic maps, prospecting might be stimulated and lead to the discovery of mineral resources that would contribute to new economic development within the area. A cooperative mapping agreement was proposed jointly by the two companies to the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in May 1958, and thus was born the Kootenai-Flathead five-year project. The dual objectives of this project are: 1) the possible location of mineral deposits of economic value, and 2) the ''stimulation of prospecting exploration" by others. This was to be achieved by geologic mapping of some 6800 sq miles and by establishing a field office in Kalispell where prospectors could come to have their rocks and minerals identified and receive geological advice on their problems. This writer has finished four field seasons as Project Geologist and thus became familiar with the Belt section in the Libby, Yaak River, Ural, Thompson Lakes, Pleasant Valley, and Stryker quadrangles (see Fig. 1). Progress on the project is given in annual reports issued by the Bureau.* This *Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, Bulletins 12 (1959), 17 (1960), and 23 (1961). paper is concerned essentially with the stratigraphy of the Belt rocks so far encountered in mapping. PREVIOUS WORK IN THE AREA Willis28 made the first study of the stratigraphy and structure in the Lewis and Livingston Ranges of Glacier Park just east of the project area. In 1904, Daly made a study of the Belt rocks of the 49th parallel, using the names from bottom up, Creston, Kitchener, Moyie, and Gateway, for rocks ranging in age from that of Prichard to that of basal Missoula group. Walcott26 studied the Belt rocks exposed in the Mission Range (see Fig. 1) and other areas to the south of the area under discussion. Calkins and McDonald made a reconnaissance of northern Idaho and northwestern Montana in 1905. Calkins was the first to use Walcott's term 'Ravalli' as a group name for the strata equivalent to the Burke, Revett, and St. Regis formations (see Table I).
