THE formal outline of Mr. Hague's life and work is embraced in the following statement, chiefly based upon data furnished by him, at my request, shortly before his death. At that time the probability that I would survive to record his death was apparently small; but I urged upon him the duty of providing, whether for me or for my successor as Secretary of the Institute, trustworthy material for the notice which somebody would some day have to write-and which might otherwise be incomplete or incorrect. Mr. Hague, with characteristic promptness and freedom from affectation, did what I asked of him; and I am therefore . able to present an authoritative sketch-concerning the details of which I shall add my own comments, and some particulars obtained from others of his personal friends. James Duncan Hague was born Feb..24, 1836, at Boston, Mass., where his father, Rev. William Hague, D.D., an eminent clergyman, then resided. After a preliminary, education in private. schools, be studied in 1854 at the, Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University; in 1855 and 1856 at the University of Göttingen, Hanover; and from 1856 to 1858 at the Royal Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony. In 1859-1861 he was attached as chemist to a South Sea exploring expedition, sent by W. H. Webb, of New York, to examine Jarvis, Baker, and other islands for phosphate-deposits. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he entered the U. S. Navy, serving for a year as Judge Advocate to the fleet stationed at Port Royal, S. C. In 1863 he became Superintendent of the Albany and Boston copper-mine, in the Lake Superior region, where he was also connected with the earliest development of the Calumet and Hecla property. In open pit mining, ore and waste are hauled outside of the excavation area by trucks that move along a system of ramps. The design of these ramps must be carefully addressed because they have to comply with geomechanical constraints to ensure the stability of the pit walls, provide access to the different levels and phases, but also maximise the value of the extracted ore and reduce the extraction of waste. Because an optimisation approach able to deal with the design of the full ramp system seems to be out of reach at the moment, this paper addresses the problem of designing one ramp providing access to a single pushback, which has been determined beforehand. The optimisation objective is therefore to find a ramp that gives access to one given potential volume, while minimising its impact on the economic value of the volume. Two versions of the problem are formalised. One version allows the extraction of ore and waste only if this extraction is necessary for the ramp system. This version somehow minimises the intrinsic value of the ramp system. In the second version, it is possible to extract more than is needed by the ramp system. For instance, this takes into account the possibility of attaining ore on the wall opposite to the ramp as soon as the ramp reaches its level. In the setting mentioned above, the contribution of this work is three-fold. First, the computational complexity of the two different versions of the problem is presented and discussed; in particular, they are shown to be NP-hard. Second, compact integer programs modelling these two versions are proposed. Third, an efficient GRASP algorithm able to cope with the large instances of the problem is proposed. To assess the proposed approaches, the models and algorithms are applied to real instances with an off-the-shelf solver, illustrating and discussing their potential and relevance for the two versions of the problem. They are also compared with other approaches from the literature in terms of value and resulting designs.

At the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper-Smelting,"' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, FeS. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu,S, 90.4, and FcS, 9.6 per cent. (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and FeS, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent. of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent. of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that five of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the ferrous sulphide-cuprous sulphide series, and to see how the constitution could be further revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, " The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron-Bottoms." The Gumuskoy silver mine, owned by the Etibank, in the province of Kutahya, Turkey, has been operating since 1987 with primary, secondary and tertiary crushers, and two parallel single stage ball mill circuits. Continuing problems with crushing and feeding of the ore to the ball mills, because of the moisture retaining and sticky nature of the ore, prompted an investigation into the possibility of converting the grinding circuit to an autogenous or semiautogenous grinding circuit. This would remove the bottleneck associated with the secondary and tertiary crushing. At the same time the target feedrate is to be raised from 140 t/h to 175 t/h. This paper demonstrates the response of five ore types, and blends of ore types in an onsite pilot plant test program, and also suggests how the variations can be handled in a SAG mill/ball mill circuit incorporating just one of the present ball mills.

The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. Pipelines for transporting high concentration slurries are often designed using methods applicable to homogeneous non-Newtonian laminar flow. Many industrial slurries though comprise coarse particles in a non-Newtonian carrier fluid, and existing experimental evidence from tests with such slurries demonstrates that they are not homogeneous. Under laminar shear conditions the coarse particles settle, even in statically stable carrier fluids. To understand this better, the Institute of Materials Science and Technology (IMST) at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is conducting ongoing research into the flow of these high concentration non-Newtonian settling slurries. Since pressure gradient and flow rate measurements alone are insufficient to adequately model the flows, an electrical resistance tomography (ERT) instrument developed by the University of Cape Town (UCT)was incorporated into the pipe test loop to determine pipe cross-section concentration and velocity profiles. The software developed to do this is modular and allows different image reconstruction and cross-correlation algorithms to be implemented and tested without significantly changing the rest of the application. At a total frame capture rate of 566 frames/sec a 2.67 GHz Intel Celeron processor with 500 MB of RAM is fast enough to calculate and display velocity profiles in ?real-time? at an update rate of one profile every two seconds. Examples of experimental concentration and velocity profiles obtained using the system are shown and some proposed improvements/extensions to the system are listed.

The surface chemistry of the calcite/oleate flotation system was examined by in-situ FT-NIR/IRS. Spectra of combination and overtone bands of aliphatic stretching vibrations revealed gauche/trans conformational changes that occurred solely as a function of temperature. The conformational changes were attributed to the simple "melting" behavior associated with phase transitions. It was concluded that chemisorbed oleate at calcite surfaces is gel-like at temperatures below 22oC, resembles a coagel between 22oC and 31oC, and becomes micelle-like at temperatures above 31oC. By comparison, chemisorbed oleate at fluorite surfaces also undergoes these phase transitions but is additionally dependent on adsorption density. The conformational changes were observed at high chemisorption densities (> 2.0x10-10 mol/cm2) and attributed to molecular forces, primarily van der Waal's interactive forces, among neighboring chemisorbed oleate molecules. Similar analysis of in-situ FT-NIR/IRS spectra of surface-precipitated calcium dioleate at calcite surfaces did not exhibit this behavior thereby confirming that surface-precipitated calcium dioleate remains in an all-trans conformation. The results help explain why surface polymerization is not observed at calcite surfaces but is observed at fluorite surfaces.

This paper presents the use of queuing theory in truck fleet sizing in open pit mining operations. In the first part, a methodology is developed by which an optimal ratio between the size of shovels and trucks may be determined. The second part gives the fundamentals of the queuing theory and its application in analyzing shovel and trucks. The stochastic character of involved times (loading, truck cycle, etc.) is taken into consideration. Using the above theory, the optimal truck fleet size in actual conditions may be estimated. Minimal operating cost of the working system (shovels-trucks) represents the basic requirement of the analyzed process. The methodology was validated on Caterpillar front-shovel ? truck combinations.

"American Barrick Resources Corporation acquired the goldstrike property in north eastern Nevada in early 1987. Since that time, the company has undertaken an extensive development program. This paper will overview the milling, autoclaving, and heap leaching facilities which are part of the $400-million Betze development plan. Gold production at the Mine has increased from 40,000 ounces per annum in 1987 to more than 500,000 ounces in 1991. And in 1992 Goldstrike will be the single largest North American gold mine when it produces 1,000,000 ounces.1. SUMMARYAmerican Barrick Resources Corporation acquired the Goldstrike property in northeastern Nevada in early 1987. Since that time, the company has undertaken an extensive development program. Mining in highly stressed ground conditions has been an increasing challenge at the Brunswick mine. Over the past 30 years, two large regional pillars were established on the 1000 m Level to support the ground for safe extraction of the surrounding ore. The South Regional Pillar contains about 5 Mt of ore and the North Regional Pillar has about 3 Mt of ore. In the fall of 2000, mining activities were suspended following a series of ground movements around the South Regional Pillar along weak geological structures. After extensive geotechnical investigations, a decision was made to carry out a mass de-stress blast in the West Ore Zone (WOZ) to cut the principal stress across an area of 135 m along strike and 86 m high. At the end of July 2001, the WOZ mass blast was successfully initiated. Following this success, the mine decided to take a similar approach to de-stressing the North Regional Pillar (NRP). The final mass blast was taken in early February 2003. Advanced blasting technologies, including state-of-the-art electronic detonators and blast simulation, played an important role in achieving the successful blasts. The high precision of delay timing and long delay duration of the electronic detonators ensured accurate and reliable initiations of over 800 blastholes in the WOZ mass blast. Orica’s DMC_Blast (Distinct Motion Code) simulation code was used to study different blasting blocks for the desired timing in the initiation sequence. This paper describes the process of applying electronic detonators in complex blasts, and discusses how blast simulation results were interpreted to guide engineering design of the mass blasts.

Granulation systems are customarily viewed as problem areas in metallurgical operations. The inherent risk of explosion when combining a high temperature melt with water creates a safety hazard. Separation of the granulated material from the quenching medium generally involves equipment that can have significant maintenance and operating costs. Granulation systems' reliability and availability can negatively affect the plant production. Against this background, granulation systems have been treated by design firms and producers as an add-on and a necessary evil. The technology is becoming better understood and solutions to common problems are being found. This paper will discuss typical problems in common systems, and some of the improvements that have been made, with particular reference to non-ferrous applications.

This study investigates the transformation of pyrolytic spent tyre-derived char and crumb rubber into high-performance activated carbon chars for industrial wastewater remediation. Utilising an in-house macro-thermogravimetric analysis system under an argon atmosphere, spent tyre-derived activated carbon char were synthesised via physical temperature activation and aqua regia demineralisation. Comprehensive characterisation using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, revealed a predominantly amorphous structure with nanoscale crystallites (~1 nm) and active surface functional groups. Proximate analysis confirmed that both crumb rubber and leached tyre crumb rubber with aqua regia derivatives achieved favourable compositions (ash ≈ 9.6%; fixed carbon ≈ 84%), comparable to commercial activated carbon (AC). At an optimal activation temperature of 850°C, the char of tyre crumb leached with aqua regia variant exhibited a significant surface area of 300 m²/g. Crucially, the tyre crumb char produced at 850°C variant developed a pore volume of 0.8 cm³/g—effectively doubling that of commercial activated carbon (0.4 cm³/g)—facilitating the sequestration of large organic molecules. In application tests using high-strength starch wastewater, char of tyre crumb leached with aqua regia and tyre crumb char, both produced at 850°C, achieved total organic carbon removal efficiencies of 60% and 50%, respectively, bridging the performance gap between waste-derived and commercial adsorbents. These findings validate waste tyres as a viable, low-cost precursor for industrial-grade adsorbents, offering a sustainable circular economy route for tyre valorisation and reduced industrial disposal costs. Future research will focus on kinetic modelling and the recovery of zinc from spent tyre-derived activated carbon char residues.

"This project constitutes the results of a geophysical field investigation undertaken in the mining areas in the vicinity of Marion, Crittenden County, Kentucky.Results were obtained at well-known mines being worked for fluorspar. Of special interest was the determination of mineral trends at such mines, particularly in relation to the fault patterns, because of ore in them.This work also constitutes a comparison between the field information that can be obtained by purely geological means and the additional information obtained by applying geophysical surveys to the same areas.As the mineralization in this area is controlled almost surely by the faults therein, the great importance of locating faults cannot be over emphasized. Accordingly, there has been incorporated herein the analyses as well as the application of electrical resistivity methods for fault determinations.In the western part of Kentucky, particularly in that area designated as the Cave-In-Rock quadrangle by the United States Geological Survey, is located the center of the fluorspar mining district of Kentucky. From the mining as well as commercial viewpoint, this area is of considerable interest and importance. It has been described by Currier4/ as a large structural dome that collapsed, through faulting, into a mosaic composed of a main fault pattern that has a strike to the northeast in sedimentary formations. Accompanying this main fault pattern are a large number of irregular faults. This fault complex is also traversed by a dike pattern that has a regional strike for this region focusing a northwesterly direction. The faulting occurred before the dike intrusions, the latter being composed largely of peridotite rocks. According to Reed,5/ most of the metallic mineralization, composed chiefly of galena and sphalerite, occurs at or near the Intersection of the dikes with the faults, indicating a possible igneous origin of the ore deposits. Reed adds that the fluorspar generally does not follow this rule but may also be found in other portions of the faulted zone not directly related to dike intrusions. The area may be considered of equal interest in the occurrence of lead and zinc and in the occurrence of fluorspar controlled by the faults. Hatmaker and Davis6/ give detailed information concerning the form of the ore bodies and economic factors that control ore production in this area; they also suggest the application of geophysical methods in this territory. Ulrich and Smith7/ also discuss geological details in this area. This area is therefore of interest, whether examined from a large structural point of view or from a very detailed angle. The former will assist in determining the origin of the mineralization and its economic possibilities, whereas the latter will give details concerning fault locations and their geologically and geophysically controlling features. This work was undertaken as a pilot investigation relating to the study of the location of fault occurrences, in which it was attempted to determine the location of faults as well as the fault patterns in certain isolated areas. No effort was made to identify the mineralization from the gouge material in the faulted zones; this problem was left for subsequent investigations."

This report describes the tunneling at the Leadville drainage tunnel, which was resumed in September 1950 with funds made available in the 1950 appropriation of the Department of the Interior. It brings up to date the account of the first project, carried on from December 1943 to August 1945, published by the Bureau of Mines which supervised both the first and second projects. In this report Leadville mining history, particularly related to drainage efforts, and the possibilities for future mine drainage are discussed briefly. An account of the second project, including a description of the operating cycle, exploratory drilling done as a safety measure, surveying procedures, geology, cost data, and other pertinent information, completes the report.

"The basic problem of arsenic contamination from mine water is discussed. Effective methods of removal involving chemical precipitation, activated carbon adsorption, ion exchange and reverse osmosis are discussed. As well as an economic analysis, detail is also paid to other ions in solution which are removed simultaneously.INTRODUCTIONThe object of this paper is to review arsenic and its removal from gold extraction plant effluents. The first method considered is chemical precipitation. A second method is sorption processes, such as ion exchange resins and activated carbon adsorption. A third method is the possible application of reverse osmosis for the treatment of mine waste waters containing arsenic.Arsenic pollution in the gold mining communities of Canada and Ghana have been extensively studies (l, 2). Lynch(3) Shabunin, Gutman and Kogan( 4), Hollo, Troth, Vennes and Illinigi (5) and Hau(6) have reported their removal methods of arsenic by chemical precipitation, ion exchange and biological methods. Their conclusions were that the precipitation with Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions was most effective.Scope of the ProblemInitial aspects of this research program involved a detailed analysis of the operation of a gold extraction plant located in Canada. The name and location of the mine is proprietary information. Figure 1 gives a basic process schematic with the main tailing streams identified.Table 1 gives information as to the various mine streams and their physical and chemical composition. In this study, primary attention is paid to the removal of dissolved arsenic from waste waters. Solids from this type of operation can always be back-filled. As could be anticipated, the dissolved As content of the primary flotation tailing stream is very low. The dissolved As level in the secondary processing stream and the roasting quench water is quite high. The reason being that at this stage of the process, the arsenic has been freed from the arsenopyrite forms."

Environmental and economic costs related to equipment fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission present a substantial challenge to the mining industry. Haul trucks are an integral part of the overall surface mining system and they consume a substantial quantity of fuel. Consequently, they produce a significant amount of CO2. The objective of this research is to (i) establish a mathematical relationship among a truck?s fuel consumption, power and engine load factors and (ii) determine the amount of a truck?s CO2 emission and the associated cost that may arise from potential CO2 legislation. In order to achieve these objectives we have considered original equipment manufacturer (OEM) haul trucks, commonly used in surface mining operations. The research presented here may be used by mining professionals to help determine the cost and environmental burden of the trucks? application, and efficiently manage energy consumption.

"A case study for the application of a novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of a narrow steeply dipping, gold-silver mineralized quartz vein deposit is presented. The technique is novel in two respects. First, mineral grades are kriged directly rather via the accumulation method more often applied to vein deposits and, second, a modified 2D ordinary kriging algorithm is used that allows the calculation of a single grade and variance for irregular shaped blocks of varying sizes. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the suitability of this novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of the Poura mine deposit and, if appropriate, to lay a firm foundation for future geostatistical work at the mine.The reserve estimation concentrated on the remnant ore blocks and pillars in both underground and surface workings. The data, which was collected in 2D coordinates with grade and vein thickness values, was first analyzed statistically and used to compute experimental semi-variograms. Appropriate semivariogram models were fitted and various aspects of the estimation technique were evaluated using cross-validation error analysis, with acceptable results. A block kriging computer program called Krige2D was developed to implement the modified 2D kriging algorithm and calculations. Production data were not available to evaluate the computed block resources, but they were compared with a previous resource data determined using an arithmetic approach. The geostatistical technique estimated slightly higher grades but lower overall tonnages as compared to the earlier arithmetic estimates."

Mineralogy and physico-chemical characteristics of a nickel hydrometallurgical residue and recovery of iron-bearing minerals by flocculation-magnetic separation were studied. The results show that the nickel residue is super-fine and fraction less than 0.045mm reaches 85.4%. Ferrous minerals are chiefly magnetite and ferruginous glass. Magnetite accounts for 31.7% and exists as free magnetite. Ferruginous glass is of multicomponent amorphous substances with low-iron grade but strong magnetism, and accounts for 39.9% of total iron minerals. Addition of flocculants increases granularity and magnetic force of fine iron-bearing particles and improves iron grade and recovery. The tests with flocculation separation show that a concentrate assaying 56.68% Fe with 81.72% recovery was obtained in a magnetic tube. A concentrate with 56.92% iron grade and 67.96% recovery was obtained by flocculation-magnetic separation with a magnetic cylinder.

Several years ago, Hudco Industrial Products began experimenting with the idea of levitating a conveyor belt with a film of air, much like the puck on an air-hockey table. While conducting its research, the company found out that some Russian and Dutch companies attempted the concept during the 1970s. After studying those conveyors, Hudco determined that its design was better. The Hudco advanced air-supported conveyor consists of an air-tight plenum, or chamber, that runs the length of the belt. The topside of the plenum has a formed trough. It corresponds to the profile of conventional troughing rollers. Low-pressure air is provided to the sealed plenum from a low horsepower blower. This pressurized air is metered and released through the central portion of the trough and reacts against the underside of the belt. The differential pressure between the top and bottom surfaces creates the lift to support the loaded belt. Airtight covers are installed to seal the transported materials in the plenum trough.
