EPA NRMRL Mine Waste Technology Program and Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting an in-situ technology demonstration at the Anchor Hill Pit Lake, Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site. The goal is to develop in-situ treatment cost/performance data for potential application in long-term water treatment/management at Gilt Edge and similar sites. The pit contained 77,000,000 gallons of pH 3water with elevated metals, sulfate, and nitrate. The Green World Science® patented process for in situ treatment was implemented to isolate and sequester metals; create stable long-term water quality and restore a sustainable ecosystem. COCs have decreased more than 99%, and dissolved discharge standards were attained.

Zirconium is the 20th most abundant element in the Earth?s crust and it most often occurs in the form of silicate (as zircon), less often in the oxide form (as baddeleyite or caldesite). Historically, the world?s production of zircon was entirely derived from mining and processing beach sands or heavy mineral sands that were being exploited primarily for their titanium content, i.e., to generate TiO2 feedstocks that would be used for making titanium pigments and, to a lesser extent, titanium metal. Zircon was then regarded as a byproduct, with the sharply fluctuating prices typical of a commodity where the supply is essentially involuntary and not truly responsive to market demand. However, in recent years, zircon has shown considerable mining investment appeal in its own right. Projects have been planned ? and some have already come to fruition ? based mainly on the zircon potential of the deposit. Booming Chinese demand for zircon to meet the requirements of the ceramic and zirconium chemical sectors has been a major factor causing zircon prices (f.o.b. Australia) to surge from US$674/t ($611/st) at [ ] the end of 2005 to beyond US$2,400/t ($2,177/st) by the end of 2011.

Selecting a minicomputer is not unlike selecting a costly piece of mining equipment such as a truck, shovel, crusher, or conveyor belt system. A marked difference might lie in the frequency at which such selection takes place; another difference might be mine management's familiarity with mining equipment vis a vis a minicomputer. These basic differences might prompt a mining company to seek the aid of a consultant when selecting a minicomputer system. Advantages and Disadvantages The fundamental advantage of employing an independent consultant is that it provides management with a source of knowledge and breadth of experience not readily available within the organization. If the consultant has a minerals background, such knowledge and experience are further enhanced by actual experience in exploration, mining, and mineral processing. If the consultant has worked within a mining company, such hands-on experience is supplemented with a meaningful understanding of the client's business; this facilitates communication between the consultant and members of the client organization. The consultant has been, so to speak, "in the client's shoes." There are several other advantages. Since computer systems cut across organizational boundaries, the independent consultant may be able to move within the organization more easily than an inside staff person to collect necessary information. Also, detachment from any manufacturer should provide the client with an objectivity and a set of recommendations as near optimal as feasible. The principal disadvantages lie in the area of continuity and accountability. Once the consultant's report has been submitted and his recommendations implemented, a discontinuity might occur. Also, if implementation does not provide the desired results, the consultant might not be available to correct the situation or account for actions taken. Proper selection of consultant services, relative to kind and duration, and the consultant's method of operation, will often prevent many of these aftereffects. Services Offered The professional consultant can help a client: •Define and summarize information systems technology* needs; • Evaluate alternatives such as in-house capability and capacity, time-sharing, or service bureaus; • Prepare a formal request for proposal (RFP) to be submitted to vendors; •Evaluate vendor proposals; •Evaluate the economics of lease vs. purchase; and •Assist in the conversion and installation. Thus, consulting services may range from evaluating an existing system and upgrading to a larger piece of equipment, to selecting a new first-for-the-organization computer. First, Define and Summarize Needs Regardless of circumstances, the most valuable document required before equipment selection is the information system plan (I/S plan). It helps insure that the company's information needs are met in a cost-effective manner. An I/S plan is usually a comporient of the mining company's overall business goals. Since an I/S plan is a formal vehicle for establishing and communicating the direction the organization intends to take to satisfy information requirements needed to achieve goals and objectives, most initial systems services are likely to center around creating such a document or updating an existing document. Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is known to be an effective pyrrhotite depressant in pentlandite flotation. It has been reported recently that its performance becomes more consistent when the reagent is used in conjunction with sulfur dioxide (SO2). In the present investigation, the effects of DETA and SO32- ions on the changes in the hydrophobicity of pyrrhotite electrode have been studied at pH 6.8. The results show that both DETA and SO32- can reduce the water contact angles of pyrrhotite; however, the contact angles can be reduced to zero only in the presence of the SO32- ions. This finding may be attributed to the ability of the SO32- ions to reduce the polysulfides formed on pyrrhotite by superficial oxidation, which may in turn provides an explanation for the robust performance of DETA/SO2 combination.

More than 70 km of main line and service tunnels have been excavated to date for crossing the Apennines between Bologna and Florence. A new design and construction approach, known as Analysis of the Controlled Deformation in Rock and Soils, (ADECO-RS), was adopted to tackle the extreme heterogeneity of the ground and the particular stress-strain conditions. The goal of this system is to obtain constant and predictable full section advance rates, even in very poor geology, with the highest possible level of safety and reliability. The execution of this gigantic project required the mobilization of 21 job-sites, with the concurrent operation of 30 excavation headings. The global production rates confirm the high quality of the design and the high level of industrialization reached during the construction stage, levels not previously obtained in similar conditions, using other approaches such as NATM.

GermanyINTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is currently characterized by various factors such as environmental impact, resource scarcity, social responsibility and geopolitical uncertainty. The production of minerals required to meet the demand for renewable energy is expected to increase by 500 % by 2050, particularly for critical minerals such as graphite, lithium and cobalt 1. Easily accessible deposits are often depleted, meaning that deeper and more complex deposits need to be developed. Furthermore, investors’ value systems have shifted towards more sustainable practices. Alternative approaches to solving this problem are therefore currently being developed, such as the Modular Mining Systems concept for scalable and adaptable mining projects 2. Many mining companies have also taken important steps to become more sustainable, implementing measures such as proactive closure strategies, restoration programs and the development of renewable energy projects. In the European Union, laws such as the Critical Raw Materials Act and the Net Zero Industry Act support the mining industry 3,4. They see it as important for the energy transition and promote more sustainable ways of working in the industry Particularly negative environmental impacts such as land degradation, scarcity of local water resources, water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are ingrained in society’s memory. Despite these efforts, the public image has not yet changed. To change this perception, the industry must strive to better communicate its sustainable practices and the steps it is taking towards a more responsible and sustainable future, promote transparency and build trust.Digitalization, automation and electrification are driving the digital transformation in mining. However, their implementation can lead to higher capital expenditure, limiting their adoption across the industry. Furthermore, implementing new technologies can be a daunting task for any organization. Change management comes into play when introducing such disruptive technologies. It involves preparing an organization for change, potential resistance and establishing effective communication. This helps to ensure that the implementation is successful and the benefits of the new technology are maximized. Digital transformation requires well-trained, young mining, electrical, mechatronic and software engineers with a deep understanding of information systems. Unfortunately, the industry faces the enormous challenge of attracting this younger generation, who have little interest in the extraction of raw materials. The need for action is compounded by an aging active workforce heading into retirement and the forecast of increasing demand for critical minerals.In this challenging environment, the concept of Blue Mining with its constant further developments represents a promising approach. This implies a shift from a linear to a sustainably oriented circular economy. For the mining industry, this specifically means the introduction of innovative technologies, the increased recovery of materials from waste and the consistent questioning and application of circular principles along the entire life cycle of a mine. Such a change can not only reduce the environmental impact, but also contribute to economic resilience and increased social acceptance of mining.

Many techniques that are used to characterize and monitor microbial populations associated with sulfide mineral bioleaching require the cultivation of the organisms on solid or liquid media. Chemolithotrophic species, such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans, or thermophilic chemolithotrophs, such as Acidianus brierleyi and Sulfolobus solfataricus can grow quite slowly, requiring weeks to complete efforts to identify and quantify these microbes associated with bioleach samples. Real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) assays in which DNA targets are amplified in the presence of fluorescent oligonucleotide primers, allowing the monitoring and quantification of the amplification reactions as they progress, provide a means of rapidly detecting the presence of microbial species of interest, and their relative abundance in a sample. This presentation will describe the design and use of such assays to monitor acidophilic microbes in the environment and in bioleaching operations. These assays provide results within 2-3 hours, and can detect less than 100 individual microbial cells.

Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations related to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 370 to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 170 sulfur.

Selective flocculation and dispersion processes for the concentration of hematite ore are strongly dependent on the ionic content of the process water. It has been noticed that magnesium ions are more detrimental to iron recoveries during desliming and flotation processes than calcium. This phenomenon was studied by measuring the zeta potential of hematite ore at various concentrations of magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium at a pH of 11. Results show that zeta potential inverts from negative to positive at very low concentrations of magnesium ions in the solution. It takes a significantly higher concentration of calcium, ions to achieve the same effect. This difference may be attributed to the ability of magnesium ions to adsorb to all surface hydroxyl groups, whereas calcium, due to their larger size, can only adsorb to every other hydroxyl group. This hypothesis was confirmed by results similar to those seen with calcium when this test was repeated with strontium and barium ions. The tendency for calcium ions to adsorb to every other surface hydroxyl group causes higher concentrations of calcium to be less detrimental to hematite concentration processes than magnesium.

A 70% excess of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, has been reported among men in northeastern Minnesota, where iron mining has been the major industry. The Minnesota Department of Health has studied iron miners who developed mesothelioma to identify possible sources of asbestos exposure. A database of all Minnesota residents diagnosed with mesothelioma between 1988 and 1996 was linked to a database of approximately 72,000 current and former Minnesota iron-mining employees to identify cases who had ever worked in the mining industry. The job histories of the cases were examined to determine if any of their jobs could have involved exposure to commercial asbestos. Seventeen individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma in Minnesota between 1988 and 1996 were found to have worked in the iron mining industry. Of the 15 for whom adequate work histories were available, 14 had identifiable sources of exposure to commercial asbestos in jobs held both inside and outside of the mining industry. The time between employment in these asbestosexposed occupations and the diagnosis of mesothelioma is consistent with the 20 or more year latency period that has been observed in other studies of this cancer. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The paper considers the selection of control instrumentation for a modern flotation plant, as well as the best interpretation and most effective use of the process data obtained. Process control computer availability is considered from the outset. A general philosophy of control is proposed which leads toward a system that is its own reliability monitor. The bulk of the problems are in grinding and classification. Alternative control methods are described that use particle size measuring devices. Flotation controls, based to a large extent upon on-stream X-ray analysis, are reviewed in detail. Reagent control methods are also examined. Methods to analyze the data obtained from the various measurement devices are introduced. These methods would enable an estimate of the validity of the data and require some redundant information. Another objective of these methods is the protection of operating equipment from possible control malfunctions. Although the discussion generally considers some degree of computer usage, this paper attempts to describe instrumentation and data analysis methods that enable control with or without the process control computer.

Seals and build-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are two main underground structures to isolate an area from the active working zones with different purposes. While seals are used to prevent methane gas that seeps from coal seams and blast pressures from a possible detonation of the contained gas, RAs are used to provide a safe haven for miners who are unable to escape their working locations after an accident like an explosion or fire. The recommended BIP RA designs can be similar to seals constructed with steel-reinforced concrete. Both seal and BIP RA are constructed in different locations of the mines for a period of time, exposed to a certain convergence due to stress redistribution which can change their responses during an explosion. In this study, a steel-reinforced concrete wall to be used in such applications is simulated to examine the structural performance during an explosion for a coal mine model with different strata conditions using dynamic analysis by a 3D distinct element method (DEM) code. The main purpose of this study is to reveal any possible effects or trends on the wall deformation with changes in strata conditions by implementing different combinations of roof, seam, and floor material properties. The model is calibrated by the experiment conducted on a steel-reinforced concrete wall by the NIOSH researchers in the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine. The results show that strong adjacent rock and coal units are the least favorable condition for the survival of the wall subjected to a simulated explosion pressure. The results indicate that changes in the roof and seam conditions can have dramatic effects on the deformation characteristics of the wall when compared to the floor conditions. The results of this study might be enlightening for future BIP RA and seal applications.

Mining Ventures are considered as high risk projects and therefore managing the risks is inevitable. Risk assessment is an important part of the complex process of risk management, hence applying appropriated and practical methods for ranking the risks associated with projects, can help to perform a better risk management. In this research the applicability of using Techniques for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method for risk ranking in an underground mine, extracting by block caving method, was studied. Via this method, the risk associated with reserve estimation ranked as the first while in conventional method (P-I Matrix method) located in the sixteenth. Also there were significant differences in ranks of the other risks. Considering the more criteria, with different weights, in comparison with conventional methods, the results comprised from TOPSIS method are more reliable. By implementing this method risks are ranked better and more realistic and consequently then will be managed more efficient.

A new water treatment plant is to be constructed for a portion of the water supply system of New York City. The project includes construction of new water conveyance tunnels crossing perpendicular and sub-parallel to the existing pressurized water tunnel at two locations. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of new tunnel construction on stability of the existing tunnel and hydrojacking potential in the surrounding rock mass. This paper introduces a practical approach to evaluate tunnel interaction, expressed in terms of rock-liner interaction, stress-induced stability and hydrojacking failures. A simple method to evaluate hydraulic and mechanical properties of concrete liners and jointed rock mass is also presented.

Video technology coupled with data logging exposure monitors have been used to evaluate worker exposure to different types of contaminants. However, previous application of this technology used a stationary video camera to record the worker?s activity while the worker wore some type of contaminant monitor. These techniques are not applicable to mobile workers in the mining industry because of their need to move around the operation while performing their duties and tasks. The Helmet-CAM is a recently developed exposure assessment tool that integrates a person-wearable video recorder with a data logging dust monitor that are worn by a miner in a backpack, safety belt, or safety vest to identify areas or job tasks of elevated exposure. After a miner performs his or her job while wearing the unit, the video and dust exposure data files are downloaded to a computer and then merged together through a NIOSH-developed computer software program called EVADE (Enhanced Video Analysis of Dust Exposure). By providing synchronized playback of the merged video footage and dust exposure data, the EVADE software allows for the assessment and identification of key work areas and processes, as well as work tasks that significantly impact a worker?s personal respirable dust exposure. The Helmet-CAM technology has been tested at a number of metal/nonmetal mining operations and has proven to be a very valuable assessment tool. Mining companies wishing to use this technique can purchase a commercially available video camera and an instantaneous dust monitor to obtain the necessary data, and the NIOSH-developed EVADE software will be available for download at no cost on the NIOSH website.

Worker safety is an issue that transcends industries, whether it be mining, construction, manufacturing or even general office work. In the mining industry, safety and training are particularly important because mining is a dangerous occupation. Throughout the years, federal and state safety regulations have been written and revised to keep up with the changing technologies. And mine operators have installed their own safety and training programs. They have come to realize that a safe and healthy workforce has positive effects on productivity and profitability —not to mention avoiding the high costs of injury-related absenteeism.

Investment in the ferrous sector between 1981 and 1985 will total about $9 billion, or 7.6% of the state budget for capital assets. The money will primarily go to complete the first stage of the Baoshan Iron and Steel complex and to increase steel production by 3 Mt* (3.3 million st) and seamless tubing by 0.5 Mt (551,000 st). Investment in 1983 will be about $3.5 billion, a 28% increase over 1981. Although data on nonferrous investment is less specific, the Chinese announced early this spring that the country's investment would be 2.6 times greater than the average spent during the previous five year plans. Geological surveying will also be stepped up. The Ministry of Geology and Minerals recently announced it will incorporate a search for metal and mineral resources into its second round of oil and gas surveys. The Sixth Five-Year Plan desig¬nates some actual production targets. Steel is to increase to more than 72 Mt (79.4 million st). The country's production of 10 priority nonferrous metals - aluminum (and bauxite), copper, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium, and titanium - is to increase 12.7%. Top priority is to develop aluminum production. Renewed efforts are to be made to develop gold and silver production and to increase rare earth and rare metal production. By April 1983 when the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. was established, some five months after publication of the Five-Year Plan, the goals for nonferrous development had already been upgraded and changed to include: • development priority status equal to that of coal's; • an increase of more than 150% in the 1985 projected production level for the 10 top nonferrous metals (a move from the Sixth Five-year Plan's production increase of 12.7% to one of 34%); and • modification of the top 10 nonferrous metals list to include tungsten, molybdenum, and rare earths. Aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc maintained primary importance, while mercury, magnesium, and titanium were deleted. It is likely that the modification will be taken one step further and titanium will be substituted for antimony. China has already indicated its intentions to stabilize rather than expand its antimony industry, while press reports play up the titanium industry's importance to the country's development. In addition, the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. announced that it expects to register a progressive annual increase of 4% in foreign currency earnings through export. China's nonferrous development efforts, therefore, appear two-pronged. First, the country's efforts will be directed toward self-sufficiency in its four major process and primary metals - aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead - and a number of other nonferrous metals that are in increasing demand by its light industry sector. At present, 96% of China's non¬ferrous consumption is composed of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. Substantial portions of that must be imported to meet rising demand. Second, efforts will concentrate on those metals that can be developed the fastest and are in "urgent demand" on the international market. Metals such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and rare earths will be given freer use of foreign capital and technology to increase production levels and raise quality. This study aims to investigate the effects of operational variables on concentrate grade, recovery, separation efficiency, and kinetic parameters of the copper flotation process. For this purpose, the effects of the pulp solids content, collector and frother dosage, and preparation and concentrate collection time were studied using a Taguchi experimental design. The results of statistical analyses indicated that the concentrate collection time and pulp density were the most influential parameters on concentrate grade. Considering copper recovery, concentrate collection time, collector dosage, and pulp density were the most significant variables, in decreasing order of importance. Also, the separation efficiency was mostly influenced by the concentrate collection time. Furthermore, kinetic studies showed that the second-order rectangular distribution model perfectly matched the experimental flotation data. The highest kinetic constant of 0.0756 s−1 was obtained from the test, which was performed with 35% solids content and 40 and 20 g/t collector and frother, respectively. The highest predicted copper recovery of 99.57% was obtained from the test at 30% solids content, and the collector and frother dosages of 40 and 15 g/t, respectively

The Detroit salt mine is operated by the Detroit Salt Co. It is one of the oldest underground room-and-pillar mines in the United States still in production. Mining at the Detroit salt mine began in 1906 with the sinking of the No. 1 shaft. Mining continued through the years, becoming progressively more modern in its equipment and techniques, until it was closed in 1983. In 1997, after a period of care and maintenance, the newly formed Detroit Salt Co. decided to reopen the mine. Upon completion of an extensive rehabilitation program, salt production resumed in 1998. Production currently continues at a rate of 910kt/a (1 million stpy). To date, the Detroit salt mine has mined more than 45 Mt (50 million st).This mine is unique because it lies under a heavily urbanized area within metropolitan Detroit. The mine and its history make a good case study for the continuing coexistence between the mining industry and its environs.

This paper addresses historical aspects and construction sequencing of the subway complex under Columbus Circle in Manhattan; the structural elements of the rehabilitation and new construction; and the challenges associated with design and construction. PB is providing engineering services to New York City Transit (NYCT) for the rehabilitation of the 59th Street/Columbus Circle Station Complex that services over 150,000 customers daily. The project involves structural repairs, modifications and new construction requiring underpinning and temporary supports, custom framing details, and construction staging procedures to meet stringent limitations within the operating transit station and around the Columbus Circle street intersections.
