The Sutong Bridge across the lower Yangtze River in China will have, when completed, the longest span (1,088 m) and the highest towers (306 m) of any cable stayed span in the world. The foundations for this record setting span will also be record setting. They are located in water depths exceeding 30 m with maximum flows exceeding 3 m/sec. The soil at the site of the main pylons consists of layers of silty sands and silty clays extending to bed rock at 270 m below river elevation. This paper describes the innovative methods used by the team of foundation designers and constructors to support this record setting bridge at this very challenging site. This paper covers three specific topics related to the foundations of the Sutong Bridge: ? Design and construction of the 131 drilled shaft (2.8/2.5 m diameter and 114/117 m long) under each of the two main pylons, including the post-grouting of all drilled shaft tips. ? Design and construction of the scour protection for the two main pylons, ? Construction methods used to construct the waterline pile caps (113.8 m by 48.1 m by 13.3 m deep) under each pylon.

Driving of large piles in water can impact marine wildlife. Bubble curtains can mitigate these adverse effects. The procedures for and preliminary results of monitoring airborne, waterborne and groundborne vibrations with and without bubble curtains on a test project involving 2.438 m piles to 110 m is reported here. We observed fish kills and sea lions apparently fleeing the area. These phenomena were presumably due to the extreme acoustic effects of the powerful hammers which generated waterborne sound intensities locally in excess of 240 dB. This waterborne pile driving noise data collection undertaking is believed to be the most extensive ever attempted.

This paper summarizes the analysis and design of a pile foundation system for two 400 ft. diameter, 500 ft. high cooling tower using a detailed finite element analysis package. The cooling towers are at the Brayton Point Power Plant in Somerset, Massachusetts. The design-build project will convert the power plant to a closed loop cooling system to reduce return of heated water to the bay. Each cooling tower is supported on a 5 ft. thick by 16 ft. wide ring beam with 44 columns oriented in a radial pattern. The allowable lateral movement on the thin wall shell was limited to only 0.5 inches. Lateral and tension resistance were the primary concerns for the large, but lightweight structure and the critical issue was the lateral response of piles and pile groups within the system. By constructing a detailed model of the foundation system including modeling each pile as an independent element, the contribution of each element was separately assessed and the system tuned to take best advantage of the load distribution afforded by the ring beam as well as the soil structure interaction created by tangential as well as radial resistance of the pile groups. The detailed model also incorporated the lateral resistance of interior piles supporting an equipment slab within the ring beam. Simpler models analyzed the pile groups independent of the complete structure and generally only relied on radial stiffness and generally resulted in large groups of piles needed at each pier. Through a series of trial configurations, the number of piles used was optimized. Confirmatory lateral, vertical and tension load tests were conducted and final fine tuning of the model completed.

The Texas Department of Transportation, now considering using Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Piles (also known as Continuous-Flight-Auger or CFA Piles) in their foundations, awarded a research project to Professor Mike O'Neill at the University of Houston (UH) to study the advantages and potential difficulties with ACIP/CFA piles. ACIP/CFA piles were installed on three sites for UH; they had extra instrumentation and additional measurements by UH staff during installation which are beyond the scope of this paper. Independent visual logging of the pile was done by an experienced inspection firm. The main advantages of ACIP/CFA piles are their speed of installation and their economy. Potential savings are substantial. Disadvantages include an unknown structural condition of the shaft. Inspection is critical, but many simultaneous observations make accurate inspection difficult. Because of resulting uncertainty, many engineers have avoided ACIP/CFA piles in the past.

The machine for the hybrid method called JACSMAN is ordinarily a dual shaft machine. Each shaft has augers at three different levels and nozzles for jetting at two different levels. The distance between two shafts may be changed according to the particular requirements. Figure 4 shows single shaft and a treated soil column created by the method. The diameter of the auger is 1.0 m. As the jetting nozzles locate at the periphery of the auger, jetting can achieve the additional treated soil column beyond the diameter of the auger. The diameter of the jetting improvement is fixed at 2.3 m.

"Stabilization of an existing cellular tower foundation system without dismantling the tower or compromising the existing foundation system was accomplished by installation of a jet grouted pile system. The tower was originally designed to be placed on a steep hillside and to be supported by a mat foundation founded on existing bedrock. The as-built conditions of the tower foundation system showed it to be constructed on a combination of loose fill of varying thickness and native stiff silts and gravel material. To avoid the potential of differential settlement, a jet grouted pile foundation system was installed to the top of bedrock. The jet grouted pile system was rapidly installed over a two-day period so as to not delay operational permitting of the tower.INTRODUCTIONA tri-legged lattice cellular communication tower was constructed on the side of a steep hill located in a mature hard wood forest. Access to the site as well as available work area was limited to small track type drill rigs and equipment. The original tower design required the tower to be supported by a mat foundation bearing directly on bedrock. Based on a review of the foundation construction and results of a subsurface investigation, it was discovered that the foundation was built directly over a loose fill material that varied in thickness from 0 to 4.27 meters (0 to 14-ft). Because of the uncompacted nature and varying thickness of the loose fill materials, the tower would be susceptible to differential settlement which, could lead to tower instability.The objectives of this project included the following:• stabilize the mat foundation against differential settlement without removing the existing tower structure or foundation system• rapidly complete stabilization activities to allow operational permitting of the towerSOIL CONDITIONSThe subsurface soil conditions that the tower mat foundation rested on were evaluated by installing three borings in a row from the inward slope portion of the mat foundation (B-1) to the outward slope portion of the mat foundation (B-3).
