The kinetic and practical aspects of the extraction of copper from copper-rich solutions by cementation on iron was investigated. Tests were made on the effect of stirring speed, cupric sulphate concentration, acid concentration, temperature, and ferric sulphate concentration on the reaction rate and excess iron consumption.Most kinetic investigations were conducted under a nitrogen atmosphere to prevent any oxidation of the iron or copper metals. The stirring mechanism for all tests incorporated the use of a rotating impeller above a static disc in the solution. The activation energy for cementation on the steel disc at high stirring speed was 8·6 kcal/mole, indicating a predominant chemical control.Increasing the pH first decreased, then above pH 3, increased the reaction rate. Additions of sodium sulphate also significantly increased the reaction rate.The use of high temperature and high pH under an inert atmosphere has been suggested for increasing the reaction rate and producing a high purity sponge copper product.

The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. The labour question is one that has caused mine managers much thought and anxiety and is likely to continue to do so as long as human beings exist. The difficulty is to devise some arrangement whereby the interests of miner and mine ownerare identical. Mines cannot be worked without capital, and capital is no good without labour, yet, though both have the mine in common, their interests are not exactly the same. Some men are happy so long as they can scrape through by exerting themselves as little as possible, but capitalists do not work mines for charity, they want some return for their money.Where a large number of men are employed there are bound to be examples of all sorts, good and bad, and it is because one cannot depend on all, that different methods of employment have to be adopted. Which method is selected depends to a great extent on the labour market, local conditions, nature of the ore and the way in which it occurs.A big step towards success is obtained by securing the services of good bosses, not only those who know how work should be done, but men who have a knowledge of human nature. It is a big mistake to be too lenient with a man, also to be unnecessarily harsh. The design of primary sample cutters for high-capacity conveyors is critical to achieving a correct sample, both in collecting the sample and ensuring smooth sample discharge flow. Modelling usually occurs at the design stage and requires extensive experience to achieve the correct result. However, it is difficult to confirm the effectiveness of the cutter design until after installation. Even with high-speed video, confirmation of complete sample capture is difficult, especially if the material characteristics change over time. Recent investigation using discrete element method (DEM) simulation to model the flow of the ore into the cutter and observe how it interacts with the cutter has revealed some interesting design requirements not observed in the past. By including DEM modelling, the correct design and optimisation of the cutter can be more accurately determined prior to commissioning.CITATION:Hidding, M and Shaw, R, 2017. Misiman society is matrilineal and despite relatively long contact with Europeans and mining, it retains its traditional consensus style of decision making. Many Misimans at least understand English, and this has encouraged comfortable communication between the people and the company (Misima Mines Pty Limited). Company care in monitoring the environment (mostly using Misiman staff), its policy of maintaining a largely Misiman workforce, and its emphasis on training and safety, have all created an environment compatible with Misiman society. In addition, the company has constructed and/or upgraded community facilities such as the airstrip, roads, the health centre, police station and schools, and has actively promoted local business endeavours. All these initiatives have been accomplished by constant dialogue with the largely Misiman workforce, and with the Misiman people, both before and during implementation. Constant, careful communication, using traditional Misiman consensus methods, appears to be the key to continued community acceptance of the project.

Currently an Australian Standard for tunnel fire safety is being developed for road and rail tunnels. Other local guidance relating to tunnel fire safety that has recently become available includes publications by both the Roads and Traffic Authority and RailCorp of New South Wales. Internationally, the World Road Congress has completed its 2004 - 2007 cycle, which has resulted in a number of publications. International developments in rail guidance include a new European Standard regarding fire safety in railway tunnels that will come into effect in July 2008. In addition, the National Fire Protection Association committee NFPA 130 are in the process of revising their standard for fixed guideway transit and passenger rail systems, which is due for publication in late 2009. This paper outlines the status of these and other recently published relevant local and international fire safety guidelines and their implications for tunnel projects in Australia.

The treatment of hypersaline waters originating from numerous gold projects within the Western Australian Goldfields region via membrane technology has been assessed. A combination of Ultra-filtration (UF) and Nano-filtration (NF) using Ecotechnol’s modified elements effectively removes the polyvalent ions responsible for the high lime and cyanide consumption as well as the prevalence of scale formation characteristic of gold operations in this region. Through removing up to 98% magnesium, 94% calcium and 99.7% sulfates from hypersaline water with total dissolved solids from 40,000mg/L to 250,000mg/L, Ecotechnol and subsequent independent tests have demonstrated up to an 87% reduction in lime consumption and through the ability to increase the operating leach pH, reduce cyanide consumption by up to 28%.CITATION:Tapley, B, Stoitis, N and Lien, L, 2015. A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

Globally, private minerals companies considering the transition to a public company and entrepreneurs looking to create a new public company through, for example, an initial public offering or by a reverse takeover have many options. For companies with assets around the Pacific Rim, there are arguably five key stock/securities exchanges that actively promote international minerals company listings, and these are located in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom.Listing on any of these exchanges requires a range of technical, commercial, financial and legal documentation. Each exchange has specific rules and requirements for technical documentation to support the listing process. Once listed, each exchange also has specific rules for technical information to meet ongoing compliance requirements. The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June, 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods.Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 ft. to over 100 ft. in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sub-level stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

Permian coal seams from the Tomago Coal Measures in the Northern Coalfield, New South Wales, were analysed petrographically and reflectance measurements made for each. Vitrite contents were moderate to high for most of the coals but for two they were very low.The mineral-matter contents were low to moderate by Australian standards. Different profiles of a particular seam could be correlated by petrographic methods.Standard seam profiles were drawn up and from these an idealized Tomago seam sequence was compiled. All the coals were of high-volatile bituminous rank. Their carbon contents, but not thcir reflectances, varied significantly with the quantity of vitrinite present.

Cook Colliery currently mines in the Argo Seam, beneath old workings in an overlying seam. The Argo seam is up to 4.8 m thick and a continuous haulage system behind an ABM25 is used to develop first workings. Current partial secondary extraction utilises floor stripping and pocketing or sumping first working pillars on retreat. The following paper summarises this recent secondary extraction experience, particularly from a geotechnical perspective, but also considering production and ventilation issues. Outcomes and learnings are presented for mining in this challenging and close multi-seam environment. The sealed castor seam workings are within 20 m, and vary from unmined areas to large first working pillars, to partial extraction panels and full extraction panels. High stress remnant pillars and goaf-edges are notable mining considerations. The mining environment is further complicated by faulting, thrust zones and weak laminated roof.

Recovery of gold from gold ores has been driven by the available technology and its configuration in the process plant flow sheet.Conventional practice in test work programs has the ore being ground fine (to 106 or 75 microns) to ensure liberation ahead of leaching or flotation. This paper identifies that, in many cases, gold and gold sulfide carriers will liberate and be recovered to a concentrate at much coarser sizes.There is an exponential increase in energy consumption relative to particle size reduction. This impact becomes extreme when comparing crushing a product to 1 mm against grinding to 75?microns.The resultant reduction in energy consumption when liberating and separating at 1 mm or coarser compared to grinding to 75 microns can be in the order of 15 kWh/t or 60 per cent of energy in the comminution circuit.Recovery of free gold and gold sulfide carriers by preconcentration (using continuous gravity devices such as the InLine Pressure Jig), combined with flotation of the fine gold and gold carriers, can result in significant power savings.There are multiple locations within the flow sheet that can be targeted using this process, including recovery in the cyclone underflow of existing plants, preconcentration ahead of the plant or complete greenfield, low-energy process plants designed from first principles based on data from a Gekko developed test work regime.We will describe the process of defining mineralogy in the laboratory and the decision-making process through to actual applications in the field.Several examples will be provided, including a South African Witwatersrand gold ore, several Australian gold ores and others, indicating the benefits of this process and where it has been brought to commercial reality.CITATION:Gray, A H, Davies, M and Theletsane, G, 2014. Factual data about the sedimentation in the Newcastle Coal Measures are presented. Data concerning the total coal measure sequence (isopachs, sand/shale ratio, and total coal thickness variation), data about three coal seams (Borehole, Dudley, and Victoria Tunnel) and data about interseam conglomerate units are discussed.From this data conclusions are drawn about the coal measure environment. The western edge of the coal basin, the Lochinvar Dome, although a high feature, was apparently stable during coal measure time. Despite its height it apparently supplied little sediment to the basin.The northern and north-eastern edge, which was unstable, supplied most of the coarse detritus (including the conglomerates) to the basin. The conglomerates show patterns of fluvial origin but after a period of "normal" variations in pattern they become restricted to two parallel zones evidently tectonically controlled. Deposition of conglomerates is episodic and separated by periods of coal formation when deformation was apparently slight. Formation of each of the three seams considered followed a rather similar pattern- each show development of thick coal around the basin edge and poor thin coal in the "axial" region of the present synclinal structure.Evidence of ill situ formation of some areas of the seams is discussed and periodic deformation of the basin during coal measure time is postulated.The unusual character of this coal basin, in particular the very coarse units, is stressed, despite the presence of many "normal "coal basin features.

Established metallurgical plants operate in a complex environment of interdependent drivers including technology change, operating and maintenance practice, evolving markets, HSEC requirements, statutory and plant requirements, personnel turnover, ore supply, and financial conditions, to name a few. A successful optimisation program should comprehend these factors and drive towards not only lower operating costs, but also higher rates of return for a given level of investment. Optimisation programs have the potential for very high rates of return on capital that Greenfield projects rarely have. This paper presents a robust strategy and methodology for plant optimisation initiatives as well as a case study of how it was implemented at the QNI Yabulu refinery in Queensland, Australia by an integrated team of researchers, engineers and operators. The methodology is premised on the fact that nobody knows the production asset as well as the current operating team. It covers the optimisation process from ideas generation, various stages of selection against the agreed criteria, development, including testwork, funding approval and implementation. It highlights the benefits in the use of integrated teams, the establishment of a sound project basis, and a diligent, phased approach.

Springvale Mine is an underground coal mine in the western coalfield of New South Wales which utilises retreat longwall mining technique. The mine encountered significant gateroad floor heave issues during retreat of LW415. Floor heave has subsequently impeded longwall advance as well as longwall bolt up and recovery to some extent during the extraction of the next five longwalls. Floor heave at Springvale Mine develops throughout the lifecycle of the mine roadways, and is most prevalent in longwall gateroads. Floor heave has been measured as early as 2 weeks after roadway development and continues to develop through the post-development phase, with a rapid increase in close proximity to the longwall face. This paper presents a case study of the evolution of understanding of floor heave behaviour at Springvale Mine based on geotechnical characterisation, an intensive convergence monitoring program (roof and floor movement) and spatial correlation of monitored locations with longwall face position. The analysis considers previously known factors contributing to floor heave including mining depth, geological and physical properties of the rock mass and mine design geometry. Investigation results indicate a strong correlation between floor heave magnitude and roof dilation magnitude, geophysically inferred faulting in underlying strata, areas of localised stress concentration and mine roadway dimensions. This paper also discusses the predictive model which was developed as a result of the study, which is now the basis of the floor heave removal program used to manage roadway convergence at the mine. Reconciliation has become very topical over the last ten years but how do we distinguish what is good practice, and even more importantly, show how it adds value? Reconciliation at Anglo American has received support from the very top of the company and this has enabled success in the design and implementation of a range of processes, reporting activities and actions. Focus has been on full Mine Value Chain Reconciliation (MVCR) from Resource to Product and on proactive cross-functional engagement. A standardised set of reconciliation definitions and relationships are used at all mines across the company to diagnose planning and performance issues. Results are formally presented in an efficient dashboard format, accompanied by a concise narrative to communicate what has been learned and what is being done to correct, improve or change practices. Importantly, effort has also been made to sustain MVCR by embedding good practice and quantifying the benefit of reconciliation explicitly via linking results to value.This paper sets out the lessons learned from the past two-years’ journey, highlighting areas where good practice has been defined and achieved. A ranking for quantifying reconciliation confidence over time is presented as a means of putting results into context and continuously improving the reconciliation process. Since the end of World War n, many important developments have taken place in the investigation of the phenomenon of brittle fracture in mild steel. Fractures in certain classes of welded ships, in welded bridges, penstocks, etc., focussed a great deal of attention on the interrelationships of design factors, service conditions, and steel quality on the generation of catastrophic failures.Much publicity has been given these major failures, and there is perhaps a tendency to forget that mild steel, under certain conditions, as well known to behave in a brittle fashion in a wide range of everyday engineering applications.For instance, many who are connected with the haulage and lifting of heavy loads will be familiar with the bright "crystalline" fractures of crane hooks and chains which sometimes follow sudden jarring; those concerned with the heavy pressing and shaping of steel plate will not be unaware that at times sudden brittle splits or tears will develop for no obvious reason in, say, rolled pipes or in dishings.In fact it will be evident upon reflection that in many cases the conditions which mild steel has to withstand during processing into an engineering part or structure are more severe than those it wili be called upon to endure during service.
