At New Zealand Steel MiningÆs Waikato North Head operation a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system is used to excavate titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators and two Beltwagons with a two shiftable bench conveyors and two common trunk conveyors to deliver material to a processing plant. The original system was commissioned in 1984 as a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. In 1996 a second Beltwagon was purchased, increasing the flexibility of the mining system.

The search for modem casting plant concepts today focuses more and more on the harmonisation and optimisation of overall concept lines to obtain a continuous quality control and reduce the cost of production (Figure 1). Fin I As far as continuous casting plant concepts are concerned, this specifically requires an optimal adaptation and flexible operation when converting liquid steel into a directly processable product without any in-between treatment. Continuous casters need to fully satisfy the requirements of both the upstream steelmaking facilities as well as the downstream rolling facilities.

IN this paper it is proposed to present certain features of operating practice at the Port Pirie works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Limited, in the smelting in a blast furnace of lead ores carrying a high concentration of zinc.The subject matter selected for presentation is:(i) The effect of zinc on lead blast-furnace operations, together with an outline of the methods adopted in actual practice in dealing with the zinc problem.(2) Development of the height of tuyere above the bottom of the jacket, and the extension of the tapping interval and the combined effect of both factors upon the lead content of blast furnace slag.It will later be seen that one phase of the investigation carried out in connection with the effect of zinc on blast-furnace operations was largely responsible for the decision to increase to a marked degree the height of the tuyere above the bottom of the jacket.Due to this interdependence, it has been considered advisable to deal with the two features above mentioned.The high concentration of zinc in the lead-bearing materials smelted at Port Pirie has brought with it those troubles which are associated with zinc in the smelting operation.In the early stages of the history of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. the trend towards increasing cost for labour, fuel, and stores, etc., rendered it necessary to increase the lead content of the charge, and reduce to a minimum the quantity of barren flux used.

An experimental study of the soil mechanics of brown coal showed that brown coal consolidates in the same manner as does a clay and that the theory of consolidation for soils may be applied to brown coals. Moisture content is a function of the coal type, the existing effective stress, and the stress history of the coal.The effective stress in a brown coal seam is a function of the overburden pressure, the pore stress and tectonic stresses. Stress history may be deduced from geological evidence and determined by consolidation tests. Application of these principles to the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley shows that the distributions of natural moisture contents are consistent with consolidation.INTRODUCTIONThe nature and geology of the brown coals of Victoria, particularly of the Latrobe Valley, were discussed in some detail by Edwards (1945, 1948), Thomas and Baragwanath (1949) and Gloe (1960). A salient feature of these studies was the distribution of moisture contents in the brown coal seams. Recent experimental work, part of a soil mechanics study of the structure and strength of brown coal, showed that moisture content variation is a reflection of consolidation phenomena in brown coal and application of the results to .field condItions verified and modified the conclusions of Edwards in his pioneer work. Three large deposits of good quality lignite were located and delineated in the Central Otago region between October 1978 and July 1979. The program was initiated and funded by Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy as part of the national Coal Resource Survey. The exploration work was carried out by Lime and Marble Limited on a contract basis (Bowman, 1980). The three deposits were all potentially mineable by open cast methods and possessed combined indicated and, inferred reserves in the order of 1000 x 106 tonnes. They ranked with the previously discovered Eastern Southland 1ignites and as such constituted an important national energy resource. Fifteen months later a second more detailed investigation of similar duration was undertaken by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB). The objective was to upgrade and refine the geological data base of all of the nine South Island 1ignite deposits in order to make preliminary economic assessments of their potential. Again Lime and Marble Limited acted as the exploration operator (Bowman, 1981a, 1981b, 1981c).

Mount Isa Mines Limited first installed electronic data processing equipment in 1959. The decision to replace this equipment with a computer was motivated by the need for greater processing power and the availability of new and less expensive computers. Consideration of hardware software and delivery features of available equipment, resulted in the selectIon of an ICT 1900 series computer which was installed in March 1966. Special air-conditioning and power stabilization equipment was also required.Systems design and programming was carried out by personnel recruited from within the Company and trained by the computer manufacturer. Early work was hindered by the problems of remote location.Initial applications were basically accounting functions whIch were taken over from the EDP installation. Subsequently computer applIcatIOns of a more complex technical nature have been undertaken. Future work will include both "scientific" and data processing applications.

The Witwatersrand Supergroup is host to the world’s largest gold deposits. The location, quantity, grade, continuity and other geological characteristics of a Mineral Resource are either known, estimated from specific geological evidence and knowledge, or interpreted from a well constrained and portrayed geological model. Establishing such a model is an integral part of the evaluation process in the Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) group, and is referred to as a Geoscience Business Model for the mining operations. The geological model established over the years has relied on detailed descriptions of the mineralisation, and understanding of the regional and local geology of the Witwatersrand sediments, in the West Wits and Free State goldfields. The processes of data collection in regard to underground stope and developing mapping, structural and sedimentological mapping, and the geological inputs to mine planning systems are described, together with aspects of drilling, sampling, grade control, and data management. Anglogold Ashanti’s Geoscience Department employs a complex and unique process to generate the Mineral Resource, including a 3D geological structure model of the orebodies which are usually highly faulted, and a robust mineralisation/facies model on which the decisions about domain boundaries are established. A Mineral Resource Inventory System (MRIS) has a dynamic graphic interface to the resource database that is used for compiling the resource statement. It is also used to determine the gold-called-for, as well as short and long-term planning. A unique estimation process using the extensive closely spaced stope face sampling database and the more widely spaced surface drilling information is used in combination in the Macro Co-Kriging estimation. The use of different support sizes in the C0-Kriging process is preceded by the equally unique ‘clusterisation’ and ‘acceptorisation’ procedures by which the data are quality controlled and assured prior to their use in the kriging process. The Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates are classified according to the SAMREC code through a method that ensures that they are compliant, auditable, transparent and reconcilable with previous Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve statements.

In several of the States of Australia, mining on private property has been seriously hampered by the fact that large areas of land have been alienated from the Crown before the discovery of gold or other minerals. In Western Australia this difficultyhas only occurred to a small extent, and has largely been overcome by an act entituled "An Act to Permit Mining on Private Property, No. XXIX., 'October, 28th, 1898." Under this act, the holder of a miner's right can apply for a gold mining lease on private land; such applicant may treat privately with the owner of such land as to the amount of compensation to be paid for surface ,damage, or the case may be brought before the Warden who will assess the damages. Private land used as a garden, orchard, or vineyard is exempt from lease, unless the applicant has authority from the owner, or such lease is limited to a greater depth than 100 feet from the lowest part of the surface.No lease shall be granted of any mines under any private land in any municipality unless either the applicant has authority from the owner, or such lease is limited to a greater depth than two hundred feet from the lowest part of the surface.The same regulation applies to leases of private land on which any hospital, asylum, or public building is situated or under or within one hundred and fifty yards laterally of any...

Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, a O2- , and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of a O2- , which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. The patterns of iso-optical basicity lines in ternary systems are shown to agree well with the pattern of iso-activity and iso-capacity lines under appropriate conditions. * Originally published in the Proceedings of MINPREX 2000, published by The AusIMM.

A genesis based on new developments in the physical chemistry and flow properties of colloidal substances is proposed for the pipe-like Peko orebody. The rheological behaviour of sediments is governed by the contained colloids. Remobilization of thick pasty sediment during diagenesis is regarded as an essential step in the concentration of metal dispersed in sediments. At a high concentration the sediment pore fluid is a dense gelloid such that van der Waals attractive forces between the colloidal particles exceeds the coulombic repulsion. This permits accretion of the colloids into globular clots and their fracture fragments. These have a uniform size distribution dependent upon the rate of shear, and the sediment lithifies to clotted, porphyry-like, "gritty", dolomitic or igneous-looking intrusions and flows. The physical chemical properties of natural sediment colloids appear adequate to account for ore formation.Adsorption accounts for the dispersion and retention of metal in sediments. Accretion accounts for the segregation of the colloidal materials to give the various types of clotted igneous-looking intrusive source rocks. Syneresis enables the colloids to spontaneously draw together and to dehydrate. Formation of an ordered lattice achieves a lower energy state and desorbs metals and insoluble metal compounds "particle by particle" into the escaping water of hydration and pore water. Peptization enables migration of the metal hydrosols as stable dispersions until they merge for outflow through seepage zones or water extrusion channels. Nucleation and concretion precipitate the metal dispersoids from pore waters seeping through hydrous parts of the source rock, porous beds, faults, and zones of weakness by which the connate waters leave the lithifying sediments. Gelatinous precipitated mineral matter in the ore channels is capable of thixotropic reliquefaction when disturbed by shock or movement. Local reintrusion, flowage, interveinings,brecciation, and intermixing of the materials is the result.The principles of the suggested genesis are applicable to both syngenetic and epigenetic mineral accumulations.

Industrial Minerals production in New Zealand is limited in both quantity and range, but imported in quantities that make New Zealand the world's biggest consumer per head of population. The use of industrial minerals is assured as both population and standard of living increase regularly. But to develop these minerals in the New Zealand environment requires the mineral, or its market (both local and export), to have characteristics that negate the remote geographical location. In March 2012 a combined BHP Billiton and Hatch team embarked on a program to improve the concentrate burner efficiency of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. A multi-faceted approach including an analysis of the furnace using operational knowledge and first principles engineering led to the design and supply of a new central-lance (disperser). A new, patented, swirl method of introducing the copper concentrate into the furnace was developed to integrate with the existing concentrate burner. Plant trials in 2014 demonstrated an increase of nearly 10 percent in the oxygen efficiency of the furnace. This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

SEVERAL serious accidents, which had occurred owing to the platman leaving the plat without first withdrawing the "chairs" from the shaft, set the writer scheming to devise a mechanically operated system which would obviate such accidents and be "fool-proof". It was obvious at the outset that some means of indicating to the engine-driver by the movement of the "chairs" themselves, whether they were "in" or "out" of the shaft, was necessary.An arrangement of signalling similar to railway semaphores was considered, but was rejected owing to the difficulties accruing from the large number of communicating wires which would be required down the shaft-viz., 2 for each level. After several experiments, a comparatively simple and efficient electrical system was devised, and which is covered by Commonwealth Patent TO. 10,402.One of the chief features of the apparatus is its simplicity, and its strongest point is the fact that both the engine-driver and platman receive visual indication of the position of the "chairs." The arrangement consists of a miniature coloured glow lamp, one for each level of each shaft compartment, arranged and placed beside the numbers and arrows corresponding to the various levels, on the winding engine indicators. Solvent extraction has recently been introduced into Australian hydrometallurgical practice for the production of a high grade uranium concentrate from El Sherana ore by a sulphuric acid leach and solvent extraction process. The solvent is a 5 per cent solution of tri(iso-octyl)amine in kerosene modified with 4 per cent of a long chain alcohol. The stripping reagent is a molar solution of sodium chloride.Preliminary testing for the development of the process showed that the leach liquor was quite amenable to the solvent extraction process and that the equilibrium and rate considerations of both the extraction and stripping steps were very favourable.The industrial plant contains four stages of extraction, three stages of chloride stripping and one stage of secondary carbonate stripping. An internal type of mixer-settler is used for the stagewise contact, the design being based on tests with model equipment.The performance and control of the industrial plant is satisfactory; 99·7 per cent of the uranium is recovered for a loss of 0·3 gallons of kerosene and 0· 4 pounds of amine per 1,000 gallons of liquor treated.INTRODUCTIONThe processing of El Sherana uranium ore from the South Alligator River valley commenced in April, 1959, and thereby introduced into Australian hydrometallurgical practice the unit operation of solvent extraction on an industrial scale. Although there are now some twelve mineral processing plants in the United States and Canada using solvent extraction, its application to the field of primary hydrometallurgy is quite new. Prior to 1956 none of these twelve plants was operating and hydrometallurgical application waslimited to the refining of comparatively high grade uranium compounds and fission products from nitrate and nitric acid solutions.

The design and engineering of flotation circuits is driven by numerous inputs, including (in no particular order) testwork outcomes, site considerations, type of separation required, energy sensitivity of the flotation response, personal experience and preference for flotation machines, maintenance access requirements, operability, level of automation and capital constraints.This paper discusses these and other issues in the Australian context and covers the flotation of copper/gold ores and polymetallic (copper/lead/zinc) ores. The paper discusses aspects of the following: how should testwork be done and what are the important inputs and outcomes? how should testwork results be interpreted and how does this impact on equipment selection? what processes can have a critical impact on flotation circuit performance, eg thickening and regrind? what options are available with the typical æflatÆ Australia site? how do you minimise capital cost and what impact can this have on flotation circuit operation and maintenance? how should circuits be controlled and operated? Particular focus is placed on some practical aspects of process design and engineering and the potential impact that engineering decisions can have on flotation plant operation.

Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits, which form in quasi-hydrostatic convective hydrothermal systems, frequently contain chalcedony within high-grade ore, which has been interpreted to be a crystallisation product of amorphous silica. To deposit amorphous silica rather than another silica polymorph at elevated temperatures requires very high silica concentrations, because of its relatively high solubility. Only extreme boiling caused by decompression followed by wall rock heating upon structural dilation, can achieve this. As gold deposits with amorphous silica it must be produced by the same mechanism, particularly since extreme boiling is also a very effective mechanism for gold deposition. Recent developments support this view; the first is the detailed isotopic analysis of chalcedony-bearing high-grade veins reported from Hishikari, Japan, in which oxygen isotope results are indicative of extreme boiling and hydrogen isotopes indicate initial deposition of amorphous silica. The second is the finding of chalcedony within geothermal pipe work in the Rotokawa geothermal field in New Zealand. Rotokawa is a comparatively hot field (335¦C at depth); hence separation of the steam-water mixture produced by the wells is undertaken at a comparatively high temperature (220¦C) to minimise down-stream silica scaling. Even so, silica scale, some of which is chalcedony, does occur, under similar conditions to that in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. Evidence of chalcedony forming under these conditions, reinforces the interpretation that decompressive boiling is the main deposition mechanism for gold in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. It is possible that there is sufficient drop in temperature due to decompression that, at least initially, the silica deposits directly as chalcedony. Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits that do not contain chalcedony, such as those in the Philippines, may form at temperatures too high for chalcedony to directly form. The recognition of decompressive boiling as the main deposition mechanism in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits means that exploration can focus on zones where this has taken place by combining paleohydrological reconstruction and structural geology.

A model has been developed for drum scrubbing which allows selection of geometry and power input. Specific aspects considered are: Calculation of total static and operating volumes. Total residence time based on total operating volume. Solids residence time based on solids operating volume. Selection of the aspect ratio. Alteration of operating fill to allow for smaller or larger feed openings. Selection of proportion of critical speed. Calculation of shell and motor power requirements. The model uses either solids or total residence time to calculate the required operating volume. The solids residence time is based on the proportion of coarse solids in the feed. Material finer than the reject size is considered as part of the slurry. The solids operating volume is the static volume plus the surcharge on the discharge weir required for flow of the solids from the unit. The total operating volume is the static volume plus the surcharge on the discharge weir for the total flow to exit the scrubber. The burden density is calculated from the coarse solids bulk density and the slurry density that includes all the fine solids. Power is calculated using the Liddell and Moys correlations for burden position and shape, and the operating rotational speed. Results from the model (especially power) have been verified from industrial installations of significant size. Predicted and observed power draws are within two per cent. A check against the JKMRC mill model shows power draw prediction agreement to within four per cent.

The grade of ore at Marvel Loch mine is directly related to the presence or absence of shear zones and quartz-sulfide-rich hornblende (¦ diopside) veining within areas of plagioclase alteration. An experienced geologist can identify these features in hand specimen. Practical rules have been developed to assist this visual identification. The structural sites and styles of alteration and veining most conducive to gold mineralisation have also been determined. The work has enabled a better understanding of the geological controls on mineralisation at Marvel Loch, and has clarified geological understanding for optimisation of grade control modeling, ore block mark-ups, and minimisation of ore loss and dilution during excavation. In addition to this, it has enabled a detailed understanding of mine scale structural controls, geometry and relative grade relationships.
