The swift decline of coal during the period of unprecedented expansion in the Canadian economy is a phenomenon deserving careful examination, because the underlying forces contributing to this decline may have broader implications in our national economy. At the present level of technology, coal is more difficult to process, transport and utilize than liquid and gaseous fuels. Fundamentally, it is a matter of limitation in technique. Because coal is a vast store-house of energy in Canada, the reduction of these limitations is in the long-term national interest.

Utilizing the technology developed for oil well stimulation by hydrofracing, a disposal system which permanently fixes the waste has been proven. Large quantities of radioactive waste can be processed by a single well system making this method an attractive method for permanent radioactive waste disposal. The system depends on locating a relatively thick formation of impermeable, but easily fracturable rock such as a shale, creating a horizontal fracture, pumping the waste into the fracture in a form which will subsequently solidify and seal the fracture from the well system. The paper presents the theoretical considerations from creating and extending horizontal fractures and how these considerations were used in designing a waste disposal system which is now operating.

Large production shafts can be successfully sunk through the ubiquitous Blairmore formation of southern Saskatchewan by employing the freezing process and by the installation of a cast iron tubbing lining. Although the freezing technique for shaft sinking and the use of cast iron tubbing to preserve the shaft are new to the North American continent, these procedures have been employed in Europe for the past eighty years. More than 200 shafts, covering a wide variety of ground conditions, have been sunk by the freezing process, and most of these have been lined with cast iron tubbing. The No. 1 shaft of International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, comprises the first major example in Canada of the employment of European methods to overcome extremely difficult ground conditions. The Blairmore formation was solidified by the deep freezing process, employing a lithium chloride solution as the refrigerant, with input temperatures ranging to -55°F

Forecasting, an ancient art, is con-ducted by everyone in varying degrees. It is a vital aspect of mineral production and conditions must be predicted over a long time frame in all aspects of the industry from exploration to plant construction. Although many government agencies as well as private industry make forecasts, there are insufficent "make good" analyses performed. The performance of more such studies could sharpen forecasting ability.

Introduction The Brunswick No. 12 mine is located about 27 km (17 miles) southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick. The deposit is a stratiform massive sulfide deposit occurring in a series of sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Tetagouche Group. These rocks are generally considered to be Ordovician in age. Ore reserves at Brunswick No. 12 are 104 Mt (115 million st) grading 3.72% lead (Pb), 9.01% zinc (Zn), 0.32% copper (Cu), and 97.9 g/t (2.8 oz per st) silver (Ag). Production in 1984 was 3.5 Mt (4 million st) at 3.57% Pb, 8.91% Zn, 0.32% Cu, and 100 g/t (2.9 oz per st) Ag. Total payable silver production that year was 211 t (6.8 million oz). This made Brunswick one of the largest silver producers in Canada. Bathurst-Newcastle area and Brunswick Mining Interest in the Bathurst area was aroused in 1897 when W. Hussey discovered an iron formation at Austin Brook, just south of Brunswick No. 6 deposit. This area, and the current No. 6 area, was explored from 1897 to 1907. Iron ore was mined at Austin Brook from 1907 to 1913 and from 1942 to 1943. Any occurrence of sulfides was overlooked until 1952. In 1952, M. J. Boylen Enterprises investigated the small sulfide body associated with the Austin Brook iron formation. Other electromagnetic anomalies associated with the iron formation were investigated. The No. 6 deposit was found late in 1952, when hole B12 intersected 97.5 m (320 ft) of massive sulfides. The No. 12 deposit, 10 km (6 miles) to the north, was found in 1953. More than 30 massive sulfide deposits have since been identified in the Bathrust area. In the 1950s, St. Joe Lead Co. did extensive test work on the No. 6 and No. 12 deposits, including shafts at No. 12, lateral development at No. 12, and testing at both deposits.

The use of a series of thickeners for-washing of the slime fraction of a leached ore is not uncommon in the uranium industry; however, few ore processing mills have used a thickener circuit for washing leached total ore. The, common, practice is to wash the sand fraction in classifiers and, the slime fraction only in thickeners. At the Uravan mill of Union Carbide Nuclear, Company, a total ore' acid leach is employed to extract uranium values from sandstone ores. These leached ores are then washed at a nominal rate of from 1,000 to 1,300 tons per day in a series of washing thickeners. A typical screen. analysis of the ore being washed in these thickeners, is 25 percent -200 mesh, 3 percent +35 mesh and about, one' percent +l4 mesh., The amount of slimes (-200 mesh) will vary from 20 to 30 percent s the mill receives ore from 150 different mines The washing liquor is acidic, from a pH of about 2 in the first thickener to 0.6 pH in the last thickener and of course ally acid duty equipment must be used. The Uravan mill of Union Carbide Nuclear Company is located in Montrose County, Colorado and is physically located on a canyon wall along the San Miguel river. The thickeners referred to in this, paper are located on top of the mesa above the canyon. For purposes of identification, these thickeners are numbered 1 through 8 from south to north.

Meridian Gold Company's Royal Mt. King mine (RMK), a subsidiary of FMC Gold Company, is located approximately 40 miles east of Stockton, California on the western edge of the historic mother lode belt. Gold ore at RMK is associated with a series of northwest trending fault zones hosted in either meta-volcanic or meta-sedimentary rock types commonly referred to as greenstone sulfide and carbonaceous phyllite. Mineralogy studies show gold in both ore types to occur primarily as electrum in the form of 1 -20 um inclusions in pyrite with varying amounts of free milling gold. In carbonaceous ores, gold was not found to be closely associated with carbon. At the start of the current mining operation, three major ore resources were identified. North Pit and Gold Knoll pits were the major greenstone reserves while Skyrocket Pit contained over 60% of the total reserves as carbonaceous ore. Since North Pit and Gold Knoll were to be the first areas mined, the mill began operation in February 1989 with a flowsheet designed for greenstone ores with a carbonaceous expansion anticipated after depletion of the greenstone reserves.

The historical development of the elemental sulphur recovery industry in Western Canada is reviewed for the period 1952 to 1965. A brief technical description of a typical modified Claus sulphur recovery unit is presented. Some predictions are made concerning the future of the elemental sulphur recovery industry in Western Canada. THERE are evidences of sulphur or its compounds having been used for religious and medicinal purposes as far back as we have a recorded knowledge of history. As typical examples, sulphur was burned as a sort of inverse incense to drive away evil spirits at religious festivals, sulphur ointments were used by the early Egyptians to cure eye ailments, and hot sulphur-spring water was used as a cure for a variety of ailments. Thermopyle was called "Hot Gates" be-cause of its fame as a spa as well as a mountain pass. The Romans discovered the sulphur deposits in Sicily and mixed sulphur with bitumen for incendiaries; and, of course, anyone familiar with the travels of Marco Polo knows about the Chinese development of gunpowder, which contains sulphur. In some aspects things haven't changed much today. We still use sulphur-bearing ointments, and we still use the hot sulphur springs such as the one at Banff in Western

"Over the past 40 years, Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) has executed its mission “to bring together multi-disciplined individuals and organizations to find common ground and create a shared vision and consensus voice for continual advancement in the deep foundations industry”. Like DFI, micropile technology began a significant growth path in the mid-1980s. This paper highlights how DFI’s mission was executed in the deployment and expansion of micropile technology.INTRODUCTIONMicropiles are small diameter foundation elements constructed using specialty drilling and grouting methods. Micropiles have evolved since their introduction into the North American market in the 1970s from being lightly loaded (less than 30 kips) elements used primarily for remedial applications, to today’s high-capacity, often hybridized foundation systems, for both remedial and new-build projects. Micropiles now occupy a substantial market segment in North America.For 40 years, DFI has aimed to be the forum for discussion of all issues related to deep foundations design and construction. DFI now supports 21 technical committees and working groups on all deep foundations technologies and has expanded to include regional chapters in Europe, India and the Middle East.Several key steps are required for the successful execution of DFI’s mission, including identifying a need, engaging dedicated and knowledgeable people, developing effective vehicles and resources for information sharing, cultivating stakeholder contributions and advancements, stimulating influence/impact on deep foundations market, and expanding approaches to continue progress. Pile drivers in New York City (the original organizers of DFI) positively affected their market using these same steps: they recognized a specific need, gathered the people who could affect change, convened a discussion forum (which is common today, but was innovative at the time), defined tasks to address the issues, and influenced their market by improving means, methods and owner perception of their services. These forward thinking, proactive members created a mechanism for communication among all related parties that would advance the profession by improving safety, quality and value of pile driving construction.Micropile technology has evolved in the United States and around the world for the past four decades. The accumulated efforts of DFI and other, similar organizations such as The International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC) have contributed to this evolution. The advancement of the micropile industry – and consequently the micropile market – has been intimately tied to the execution of the mission of DFI."

Prior to 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. In the consideration of expansion opportunities, the existing process did not lend itself to a program geared towards processing the total output of KUCC mining and milling operations. During 1989 and 1990, a number of smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1:0 million tonnes per year of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 million tonnes per year. Following the shutdown of the smelter facility utilizing the Noranda technology in May 1995, the flash smelting, furnace commenced operation in June with the flash converting furnace startup following a few weeks later. The smelter has achieved design production targets and environmental goals. Current operating rates are at or above design rates for concentrate and matte processing. Emissions are lower than the permit levels and equate to less than 3.5 kg of SO2 per tonne of copper. This paper outlines the design, construction, startup and the first two years of operation of the modernized KUCC smelter.

Agriculture in the United States today is becoming more and more a business, rather than a way of life. In the light of this, it behooves the farm-supply industries that provide the American farmer with his tools of production--feed, fertilizer, machinery, and the like--to give even greater attention than they have in the past to meeting the needs of the farmer-businessmen they are serving. Increasing competition among the companies that make up these industries merely accentuates this need for better service. An opportunity for such improved service, not yet fully realized, exists in the fertilizer industry today. That opportunity lies in the increased transportation of fertilizer ingredients by water. However, before the benefits inherent in this increased water movement of fertilizers can be fully realized, certain obstacles must be met and overcome. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the nature and magnitude of this opportunity, to point out some of the roadblocks and the steps that can be, or are being, taken to remove them, and to indicate some of the rewards that would logically stem from success in these efforts.

This paper on the physical and chemical properties of crude oils from California fields is one of a series of reports on the on the districts of the United States. The paper includes a short discussion of results, tabular data, and individual analyses of eight. California crudes. Analyses of other crude oils from California have been published it Reports of Investigations 2595, 2608, and 2846. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting 65 samples was facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California. The methods used in testing and analyzing the samples are described in detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 207. A discussion of the interpretation of crude-oil analyses, as made by the Bureau of Mines, is given in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 2806.

A two-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear program is formulated for a mining complex to optimise strategic and tactical plans. The objective is to find the near optimal decisions for a mineral supply chain in the context with uncertainties in both ore supply and the commodity market (price and demand). The endogenous spot price in the commodity market and long-term sales contracts are considered in the formulation of the mining complex’s optimisation model and an ad hoc heuristic is developed to deal with the throughput – and head-grade-dependent recovery rate in processing plants. Numerical results indicate that the proposed heuristic is effective and efficient in numerical tests. Based on the proposed model and heuristic, a long-term contract design strategy is proposed for making decisions on the contract price and strategic investments. "The subject of this writing was first published in 1998 with the emphasis on the hardware cost comparison. Other costs, such as the required land area and spatial volume, were mentioned but not emphasized, as these were not deemed as important for new projects where the space was appropriated as required. During the last decade, these other costs have proven to be more than equal in importance. These costs are emphasized here through specific accounts of actual highangle conveyor installations that demonstrate the importance and the high-angle advantage An update on the progress in sandwich belt highangleconveyor technology is also provided.Origin and progress in sandwich belt conveyorsCover belts of the 1950s. Large volume, highangle conveying by “conveyors with cover belt, dates back to the early 1950s, when such systems were employed at the bucket wheel excavator boom conveyor in German lignite mines to increase the depth of cut without increasing the boom length. Various systems were developed, patented and built. These systems were not a lasting success for various reasons, which are noted by Rasper[1]. In his 1958 “Review of Cover Belt Systems,” Rasper summarizes the characteristics which are worth pursing and those that should be abandoned. The former are akin to good conveyor engineering. The sandwich belt conveyor model. The first sandwich belt conveyor model allowed calculation of the required hugging pressure to develop the bulk material’s internal friction and preclude material slideback. A modern, accurate version of the sandwich belt conveyor model is presented in Fig. 1. This model depicts accurately a derating of the material cross-section allowing an ample belt edge distance that can tolerate normal belt misalignment without material spillage. The calculations must thus recognize that only part of the hugging pressure is imparted onto the material with the remainder transferred belt edge to belt edge affecting a material seal. Mathematical development of the sandwich belt model is covered by Dos Santos and Frizzell in their 1983 article, “Evolution of Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors.”"

In this way, the materials revolution would be a boom to Latin America, it would reduce some of the serious obstacles to the goals which all Americans seem to share.

On the one hand, we lift the whole subject of energy out from its present-day involvement with short-term issues and take an important longer-term look at the solutions which lie before us. On the other hand, we recognize that short-term issues are important and, as we are reading and hearing, many of the right short-term solutions continue to elude our politicians, our policy makers, and even some of those with knowledge and authority in the energy field.A year ago, if you asked people how they would go about conserving energy, they would probably have said turn out the lights. They would probably say the same thing today, but they might also include other things such as driving the automobile more slowly or putting more insulation in the attic. It is well documented that drill and blast outcomes affect the downstream mining processes of loading, hauling, crushing and grinding but it can also significantly impact on mine profitability via dilution, recovery percentage, lump generation (iron ore), fines generation (coal, iron ore), coal loss and final wall stability. Drill and blast must therefore be optimised to improve the overall profitability via positively impacting on productivity and saleable product generation. It is however, difficult to achieve this because of the complexity of the number of parameters that must be integrated and managed across the entire mine value chain, ie the concept of æMine to MillÆ. This paper highlights, via a simple case study, the need to have a mineÆs drill and blast system both in control (so that it is predictable to a high degree) and with minimal variability (so the design actually makes it into the field). This type of management control is essential prior to optimisation work being undertaken. The æTeam ApproachÆ is discussed to illustrate the methodology of achieving drill and blast optimisation. A case study is presented to illustrate the potential benefits of this approach which in this mine represented a 27 per cent reduction in powder factor with the downstream functions achieving higher productivity with the same or reduced maintenance costs. It is essential for Australian mineÆs to implement the appropriate management strategies and experienced personnel placement to ensure that their mineÆs drill and blast system is correctly managed to facilitate the optimisation of profit. Without this, the Australian mining sector will become increasingly uncompetitive.

"This paper details the events leading up to a slope failure that occurred at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) and the remediation method executed using rope access specialists.n January 2016, KCGM Fimiston Pit experienced a double bench wall failure where approximately 80 000 t of material fell from the wall that blocked access to a ramp and caused minor damage to equipment.The event was triggered by heavy rainfall and occurred along unfavourable eastward dipping structures that lead into weaker shale/porphyry bands, which in turn left more material on the face. A remediation plan was formulated that would allow for the continuation of open pit operations while a full geotechnical assessment of the failure area could be conducted. This was accomplished by means of rope access specialists who abseiled down the wall and blasted off the remaining overhang using a portable drill rig and prepackaged explosives.This paper provides a brief overview of the KCGM operations, how the instability was identified and monitored, details of the failure event, outcomes of the geotechnical assessment and details on the remediation work.Citation:Graf, C and Sullivan, R, 2016.
