A contractor-manufactured 4.75m (15'-7") diameter EPB shield excavated a 115m (375 ft) long tunnel under the San Antonio River as part of the Salado Creek to Dos Rios Pipeline Interconnect Project in San Antonio, Texas. Lignite, limestone concretions, and sandstone in the face of the tunnel required the use of disc cutters. Less than 7.6m (25 ft) of sand and gravel hydraulically connected the top of the tunnel to the channel of the river. Fully lagged steel ribs with filter fabric were used for initial ground support and water control. This and other contractor manufactured TBMs in the 1.2 to 4.75m (4 to 16 ft) range are presented with descriptions of the jobsites, equipment, performances, and problems.

In addition to compliance with government emissions and reporting requirements, mining and mineral processing companies are increasing energy efficiency to reduce costs and become more competitive in the global marketplace. One of the major obstacles to identifying opportunities for increased energy efficiency is the lack of readily available data on energy use, and more importantly the energy use linked to production data, that identify energy reduction opportunities. As well as energy reduction, mining and mineral processing companies often struggle with the prediction of energy use, and are often penalized for under or over forecasting. Once again, it is the lack of timely information that makes this prediction difficult. This paper looks at expanding the use of a Manufacturing Execution Systems by integrating with Energy Solutions. This will provide automatic, timely information, at a granularity that makes it easier to identify energy reduction opportunities, reduce energy costs, and better predict energy use in a mining and mineral processing operation.

INTRODUCTION Crude oil reserves in the United States are still very large, even though for many years they have not been sufficient to supply our entire domestic requirements. They are continuously being depleted as oil is pumped from the ground, but new discoveries and improved secondary and tertiary recovery methods are helping to reduce the rate of depletion. It is thus a slowly diminishing resource, but even as it is being consumed, immense reserves of oil are left behind as the so called "un-recoverable" portion of petroleum formations. Most oil fields can only obtain a 15 to 40% recovery of the original reservoir, and it is widely quoted that there are still about 300 billion barrels of this un-recoverable oil still in place (Mauch, 1980, etc.). With the present comparatively high oil prices, and the possibility of even higher future prices and short supply, this oil becomes an interesting potential reserve. Mining the petroleum formation would be one means of recovering at least a portion of this oil. The concept of oil mining is neither new nor limited to conventional oil fields, since the procedure could be equally employed with the otherwise difficult to produce heavy oil deposits, and the solid or semi-solid tar sands and diatomaceous hydrocarbon formations. Estimates place the U.S. tar sand resource at about 30 billion barrels, and heavy oil at 5-10 billion barrels (Unitar, 1982). Figure 1 graphically summarizes the heavy oil reserves based upon formation depth and characteristics, while Figure 2 shows their location. Over the past several years, Svedala has developed a continuous charge monitor (CCM) for tumbling mills. It consists of a strain gauge embedded into a rubber lifter and associated electronics. This paper describes the results of a research program to evaluate the technical and economical merits of such a device on a SAG mill. The evaluation includes validation through discrete element modelling and comparison to measured static volumetric load. Inclusion of the measurement into a control strategy and its potential for condition monitoring is discussed.

Solution mining followed by solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) is one possible way to economically extract copper from ore bodies which cannot otherwise be profitably exploited. Published costs for the unit processes of SX and EW are out of date especially in view of the newer reagents now available and the newer circuit configurations, This paper updates the costs for SX-EW in 1985 dollars and also discusses some of the trade-offs which must be made when designing an SX-W plant.

It seems probable that more and more minerals will be used in plastics as time goes on. This must occur because the minerals will; aid in processability, enhance the engineering properties, reduce the cost, and above all conserve large amounts of petroleum based chemicals. [When a blast furnace has a certain defined burden and is operated under fixed conditions of blast temperature, etc., the fuel efficiency is determined by the extent to which the reducing gases can remove oxygen from the burden in the furnace stack. This is determined by two distinct factors: 1) The uniformity of gas-solid contact, and 2) The ease with which oxygen can be removed from individual pieces of burden. This latter is often called burden reducibility. When burdens were poorly prepared the first factor was by far the most important and a study of the reducibility of individual lumps was of rather academic interest recent years good burden preparation with emphasis on sized material has led to greatly improved gas distribution in the stack, and thus the second factor has become much more important and there has been a marked increase in interest in methods of measuring reducibility.]

The film you see is a slow motion view of a typical half million ton taconite blast at one of Erie's mines. This blast is made up of 220 drill holes and a total of 325 thousand pounds of blasting agent. The second view of the same shot is taken by a remote control hi speed camera located 1500' directly in front of the blast. Shortly you will see some violent camera movement as the air blast shock wave strikes the camera location. As the blasting sequence progresses the rock fly becomes evident, and if you will look closely amidst the clouds of smoke, rock fragments weighing up to 1/2 ton begin to cascade into view. These missles are the chief concern of blast security. The next camera shot at 4000 frames/second vividly describes the primacord firing lines detonating the blast. Travelling at 22,000 ft./sec., this white snake of fire travels to each hole, detonating the blasting agent. Before we get into the matter of blast security, let me locate our operation for those of you not acquainted with Minnesota's iron ranges and tell you something about our company.

One often sees in the papers, in these days of ecological consciousness, estimates of the quantity of land that has been "devasted," "ruined," or "destroyed," by surface or strip mining, especially for coal. One feels sure that coal miners must have been the first to discover the art of excavation and that the public didn't know of its existance until five or 10 years ago! Estimates of the acreage vary widely with most of them sounding somewhat unreal. One estimate of 175,000 acres in Alabama appeared in one newspaper article and the implication was that all of this was mining for coal. The question was raised anew last summer when the author began working on a land use estimate utilizing aerial photographs, a preliminary project to the Alabama Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) contract presently being fulfilled. One land use category was barren or waste land and aside from some sand beaches in the two coastal counties in Alabama, recently strip mined land constituted most of that category. It quickly became apparent that old stripping was very hard to detect so that estimates from aerial photographs are not accurate. With regard to relatively new stripping, a thin veneer of reflective dirt washed over the countryside may result in a considerable overestimate of the excavated area. Actually, there is a way to estimate the area excavated by strip mining using published Bureau of Mines figures. At least three sets of data are needed: (1) Coal production figures, (2) average thickness of coalbeds mined, and (3) an accurate recovery figure.

Diesel powered underground mining equipment is presently the most productive, safest and efficient equipment used in underground mining operations. The widespread application of this equipment to underground mining is restricted, however, largely because of the difficulty of controlling the diesel engine exhaust emissions. This paper briefly examines control devices currently available for underground application, and also discusses the theory and mechanics of controlling diesel missions with particulate traps and filters.

Pyrite cinder is generated by roasting pyrite for sulfur dioxide production. It contains up to 62% iron, but also may contain other hazardous or toxic materials such as Zn, Pb, As, T1, Cd, Cu, Sn and S. Furthermore, the physical characteristics are not properly suited for conventional sintering. As a result pyrite cinder is considered to be unsuitable for iron and steelmaking or for outside storage because of its potential for causing environmental problems. In recent years industrialized nations have put increasing pressure on the manufacturers to either use such waste products or properly dispose of them. In this study, solutions to both the iron recovery and disposal problem were attempted by pelletizing the pyrite fines with internal carbon. The pellets, after hydrothermal hardening, were reduced and melted in a furnace for hot metal production. Hot metal of usuable quality was produced and the hazardous materials were either collected with the fumes or in the slag.

The financial analyst's job is to make an objective appraisal of the investment opportunities which exist within the various industries under his supervision within the context of the economic model provided by his firm and the a climate of investor sentiments. Industry analysis is critical. When a major investment trend develops, usually the stock of all companies within the specific industry react in the same direction. I should emphasize here, however, that an investment trend is influenced by the economic outlook, but economics is not the only determinant - investor psychology and arbitrary political factors may be of equal or greater importance. Part of our job is to recognize trends early and determine whether they are valid. Following industry analysis, the analyst must examine the specific companies within that industry since some companies usually react more violently than others to industry trends, whether they be favorable or adverse. To simplify the process of evaluating an investment opportunity, it is convenient to isolate three types of factors which have a bearing on every sort of business although the degree of influence of each factor may vary from industry to industry. These categories are, 1) independent or external factors insofar as they are beyond the control of corporate management, 2) interdependent factors insofar as influence may be exerted by industry-wide action, and 3) dependent factors covering the area of internal decisions which are basically under the control of the individual corporate managers. Although the title of this paper, "The Corporate Use of Cash Flow," is only one segment of the third category, it may be useful to continent on the first two categories as well. The independent factors may be either economic or governmental. The economic factors include cyclicality which may be very high in the case of the basic commodity industries or relatively low as in the case of utilities. The growing role of Colombia as a major supplier of internationally traded steam coal has been widely discussed in the industry. Although Colombian coal has been produced and exported in small quantities for a number of years, Colombia's position as a major coal exporter began in earnest in 1985 with the first commercial exports from the Cerrejon North Block Project. By way of background: ? The mine is located on the Guajira peninsula in Northeast Colombia, about 90 miles from the coast, as shown in Figure 1. ? In addition to the mine itself, the project involves construction of a dedicated railroad and port, which form a modern, efficient and integrated system. ? The Project is embodied in a 50/50 Association Contract between International Colombia Resources (Intercor), a wholly owned subsidiary of Exxon, and Carbocol, the Colombian state coal company. Intercor and Carbocol share investment and operating expenses equally and Intercor has the additional responsibility of managing operations on behalf of both partners. Each partner is entitled to 50% of the coal produced, and each markets its share separately. ? The project is a multi-seam, truck and shovel operation, based on large reserves (2-3 billion tonnes') of high quality bituminous coal. ? Exports began in the first quarter of 1985 at modest levels through what we call Early Coal Facilities, designed and constructed apart from the permanent coal handling system. ? Production will increase rapidly in each of the next few years, reaching the design capacity of 15 Mt per year in 1939. Based on available resources, however, the resource will support expansion, and continued growth n production into the 1990s appears feasible.

Most people, when Borates are mentioned, mentally visualize the famous twenty mule team (really eighteen mules and two horses), trudging across the Mojave Desert or "she burns green Rosie, we are rich." Actually, however, the first use of borax was prior to Babylonian times. Their emissaries had orders to bring borax Iron the Gobi desert for use as a flux by the Babylonian goldsmiths. The borate mineral imported for this is not known but probably was borax. The ancient Persians and Arabians knew about borax and the Arabic word "Baurach" appears in a two thousand year old manuscript. The Sanscrit word for borax was tincana which has been corrupted to tincal. The Chinese were using borax as a glaze in three-hundred B.C. Marco Polo brought the first borax, along with gunpowder and spaghetti, from Mongolia to Europe in the late 1300's. Borax from Tibet was imported to Europe for nearly 500 years. In 1772 boric acid (sassolite) was discovered around Tuscany, Italy as a precipitant from volcanic steam vents. Production of boric acid started there about 1815 and provided the sole competition to the borax from Tibet. Borate deposits in Turkey have been known and exploited on a small scale since the 13th century. It is only recently that the operations are being modernized and production increased. About 1836, borax minerals were found in Chile and Argentina with borax production starting in 1852 in Chile and in Argentina in 1886. During the latter half of the 19th Century, Chile was the principle world producer of borax.

Intelligent systems (IS) technologies have received much attention in a wide range of process engineering applications including process operations. With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies applying the latest technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. Objects and components are changing the way everyone relates to their computer and networks. Goals of real time performance monitoring includes maximizing the profitability by maximizing production, improving efficiency, attending product quality, costs, maintenance, environmental and safety regulations. Designers must consider the greatly expanded desktop computing, Microsoft object technology, Internet and how to build these systems. This paper discusses some opportunities and challenges using objects, components in designing applications and integrating intelligent systems tools. Two examples using performance equations and IS technologies applied to mineral processing are presented.

The historic Getchell property is currently being mined from the Getchell Main Underground workings, a foot wall extension of the Getchell open pit deposits along the Getchell fault. Drift-and-fill techniques are used to extract the ore through a ramp access. The adjacent Turquoise Ridge deposit is currently under development via two vertical shafts. Together, the two mines will continue to provide feed to the Getchell's 3,200 tpd mill/autoclave circuit, taking Getchell Gold from its current production rate of 200,000 ounces (Au) per annum, to over 400,000 ounces (Au) per annum by 1999.

The emerging importance of pneumatic conveying systems for bulk materials is becoming recognized by more persons responsible for materials management as consultants, at the corporate level and at the plant level. They have learned that the economic advantages of a pneumatic system are frequently decisive when compared to alternate methods. Included in these advantages are relative simplicity, ease of installation, flexibility, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, safety and ease of automation to the degree desired. In general, installed costs favor a pneumatic system when compared to competing mechanical systems if the transporting distances are long or to and from many points. In addition, supplemental use such as cooling, heating, or drying may supply the incremental value required to justify its selection. (1). The main disadvantages of a pneumatic system is the greater horsepower required per unit weight of material conveyed and material limits in abrasiveness and density. In addition, there is a tendency to increase material breakage at changes of direction and at any obstruction such as the imperfect butting of one, piece of pipe to another in the conveying line. Classification of the material at the discharge may also cause problems in dusting and segregation. Materials weighing less than 4 pounds per cubic foot tend to cause feeding and collecting problems although they can be conveyed easily. Material between 4 and 20 pounds per cubic foot can be handled with less problems but flow rate is hard to predict. The 20 to 60 pounds per cubic foot range offers best results; whereas, over 60 pounds per cubic foot, materials tend to drop out of the air stream and settle in the pipe line unless careful provisions are made to prevent it. There are presently in use many grinding mill control schemes and concepts. This paper presents one operating method of controlling the particle size of the cyclone overflows for proper metallurgical results and controlling the level of the cyclone feed sump and new feed rate to obtain lowest unit cost of finished (ground) material which is usually at the maximum grinding mill throughput. This system stresses simplicity of field instrumentation and control strategy. Both of these factors lead to better operator understanding and acceptance. The low capital investment of this system also makes it more attractive at the Buick Concentrator when compared to other more complicated systems utilizing mass flow measurement and a computer to calculate circulating load and infer particle size. Furthermore, it has the advantage of utilizing an actual measurement for control, rather than a difficult-to-maintain inferred value. There are several reasons for maximizing mill throughput at Buick. The milling rate before automatic control was too low when compared to mill throughput increases planned for the future. Through this new operating system, it appears Buick will not have to make major changes of mill motors and speeds to meet the increased? production rate. Also, since power costs continue to escalate, it is desirable to maximize the throughput to the grinding circuit and reduce overgrinding to achieve a reduction in power cost per ton of ore milled. Presently, 45% of the concentrators' total power is consumed in this grinding circuit.

In order to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining States in the United States, the Congress passed and the President signed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (Public Law 95-87 or the Act) on August 3, 1977. Within one year after passage, the Secretary of the Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for State regulatory programs under the Act and to allow States to assume primary regulatory responsibility. In order to implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules, but ones which take into consideration the distinct differences between surface coal mining and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary and promulgated on March 13, 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included (1) a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process, (2) substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control, and (3) provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 20 acre feet, and certain public facilities and urban areas.
