(This paper reviews the reasons for and the principles followed in designing and constructing complete new surface works at the mine of the Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, New South Wales, and describes the layout, plant, buildings and services.)The Zinc Corporation mine produces high grade lead, silver and zinc sulphide ore. Lead and zinc concentrates are sent by rail to Port Pirie, where the lead is smelted and the zinc concentrate is shipped to Tasmania, England and other overseas countries.Some time ago consideration was given to the advisability of sinking an additional shaft. For some years the old main shaft had been working at full capacity and developments underground had indicated that the mine would eventually be capable of an output greater than that which could be handled through the shaft. It was therefore decided to sink a new main shaft and the site chosen was in footwall country 900 feet south of the old main shaft. The reason for the move south was so that the new shaft would be opposite the centre of gravity of the ore-bodies at depth. The size of the new shaft is 27 ft. ,6 in. x 15 ft., and the work was put in hand early in 1936.It was intended to haul the whole mine output through this shaft, which was 1,600 feet from the mill then operating. "High quality activated carbon is essential in the recovery of gold in Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP), and Carbon-in-Column (CIC) circuits. Goldcorp’s Campbell complex at Red Lake Gold Mines (RLGM) experienced a period of low soluble gold (Au) recoveries during Q3 2013, during which time the processing plant saw higher than typical Au grades in the CIP tails solution stream. A technical review identified that the CIP circuit may be experiencing a carbon-fouling issue. To further understand the degree of fouling, and to troubleshoot the low recovery problem, samples of carbon were collected from the CIP, elution, acid wash, and regeneration circuits, and submitted for characterization test work. This paper summarizes the steps taken to remedy the carbon-fouling problem at RLGM resulting in increased overall Au recovery.Overview of Red Lake Gold MinesRed Lake Gold Mines is located approximately 450 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Ontario’s western boundary region.All mining is carried out through underground operations, utilizing overhand cut and fill, underhand cut and fill, and long-hole mining methods. Ore types include: silica-replaced carbonate veins with free milling gold, siliceous replacement-type mineralization (rich with arsenopyrite) marginal to veins, broad disseminated sulphide mineralization along major shears, and some minor sulphidized chemical sediment-hosted ore. A schematic of the plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.BackgroundHigh quality activated carbon is essential in the recovery of gold at many CIP/CIL/CIC processing plants. At RLGM, gold-bearing ore is milled and cyanide is added to leach the gold from the solids into solution. The dissolved gold then comes into contact with activated carbon, and adsorbs onto its highly porous surfaces. Gold is then recovered by separating the activated carbon from the main slurry for further refining. As such, the characteristics and quality of the activated carbon have a significant and direct impact on overall gold recovery."

Sources which have not been considered until now are the marine mineral resources (MMR), which in recent times are enjoying more and more increasing interests and which might provide in the future a considerable contribution to the supply security on metal resources not only for the industrial countries. Backed up by the German government’s "National Masterplan Maritime Technologies" (NMMT) and corresponding industrial R&D-activities, the idea and the advantages of deep-sea mining is gaining more and more interests and supporters with respect to industrial and political considerations on strategic raw material resources as well as on the development of deep-sea mining technologies. The NMMT aims to initiate growth and increase the competitiveness of the German maritime industry on international markets and covers about 10 different marine and ocean technology sectors including deep-sea mining.

The necessary uniformity of mixture to produce slags of regular composition and the choice of the slag—forming ingredients and products to be formed can be made only before the charge to dropped.It was found (R.I. 3096) at Kellogg, where the charge is mostly sinter, that the ratio of the slag—forming ingredients taken from each tuyere was nearly constant, in contrast to the irregular composition of slags taken similarly from a furnace whose charge consisted of ingredients differing greatly in chemical and physical nature, including size. If the charge consists almost entirely of sinter, the blast furnace should then operate more uniformly."

The amount of airborne respirable dust generated from break- age of different coals varies widely. This research was conducted to identify the facets of airborne respirable dust liberation from the coal product. Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted on a range of low to high volatile bituminous coals to investigate the various factors influencing airborne respirable dust generation. Bituminous coal samples from 8 mines (5 U.S. and 3 Polish) were uniformly prepared and processed through a double roll crusher located in a low air velocity wind tunnel. Experimental factors studied included inherent coal seam constituents, specific energy of crushing, product size characteristics, dust cloud electrostatic field, and specific quantity of airborne respirable dust generated. The results of this investigation build upon previously published results, which indicated that a combination of several factors are associated with the generation of airborne respirable dust. One factor involved is the effect of coal rank, described by the inherent moist fuel ratio, on the product size characteristics, defined by Schuhmann size function parameters. However, since coals of high moist fuel ratio (high rank) are generally more extensively cleated, it is suggested in the present work that the degree of cleating is directly responsible for the quantity of respirable-sized particles produced in the crushed product material for eastern U.S. coals. This is implied by the relationship of ash content and at least one mineral constituent (pyrite, determined from pyritic sulfur analysis) to the percentage of airborne respirable dust. To validate this hypothesis, a description is offered that is based on known coal petrography. Another key factor is the effect of air dry loss moisture in the coal seam on the breakage-induced electrostatic field of airborne dust. The air dry loss moisture factor appears to control the amount of airborne respirable dust that is liberated from the product. The resultant effect of these factors is that different percentages of coal particles smaller than 10 µm are dispersed as airborne respirable dust with a well-defined peak in the normalized airborne respirable dust for a narrow range of air dry loss moisture - ash ratios. A clear delineation of coals, based on well-known proximate analysis characteristics, that generate the most respirable dust appears to be possible. "Cluff Mining operates the Phase II uranium mine and mill at Cluff Lake, northern Saskatchewan. During the Phase I operation, uranium tailings were generated by acid leaching of a gravity concentrate and high-grade ore for uranium recovery. The pre-treatment gravity process, as well as the high-grade nature of the ore, led to a concentration of gold in the tailings which justified the installation of a small circuit to recover the contained gold. The operating circuit consists of tailings repulping, grinding, cyanidation, carbon-in-pulp, gold recovery, and cyanide destruction by acidification, volatilization and re-neutralization. The process is described and typical operating parameters are provided. 1.0 INTRODUCTIONCluff Mining, a Saskatchewan partnership, is owned 20 percent by Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (SMDC) and 80 percent by Amok Ltd./Ltee. (Amok), manager and operator of the partnership.The current operation includes the Phase II uranium mining and milling facilities, located at Cluff Lake 700 km north of Saskatoon, capable of processing 300,000 tonnes of ore to produce about 4,000,000 lbs. U308 (1500 tonnes of uranium) per year.The Phase I operation was initially established to process the very high grade ""D"" uranium orebody from 1980 to 1983. The leach tailings from the operation Phase I mill operation were found to contain elevated levels of gold. These high gold values were partially due to the gravity pre-concentration step included in the uranium recovery circuit, and to the naturally high levels of gold associated with the uranium mineralization in the ""D"" orebody."

"Groundwater inflow into underground constructions may cause hazardous working conditions and environmental problems. It is essential to localize and characterize potential flow paths and to estimate the amount of water leakages, so that appropriate sealing works can be performed. Estimating the amount of water ingress is a multi-phase process starting from qualitative and quantitative examination of rock mass. Due to association of uncertainty, vagueness and incompleteness with the monitored data set, particularly resulted from the in situ tests, accounting relevant approaches such Fuzzy Logic and Recurrent Neural Networks, are proposed in this research for learning acquisition, extraction of rules and prediction of behaviors. The computational set of artificial tools permits using the complex information entities or information granules (rock types, geologic structures, hydro-fracture potential) for data abstraction and derivation of knowledge from records (numerical or linguistic format). This is more a theoretical perspective than a set of methods or principles. As a theoretical perspective, this proposal encourages an approach to data that recognizes and exploits the information present in indexes at various levels of resolution or scales. In this sense, it encompasses the methods which provide flexibility and adaptability in the resolution at which knowledge or information is extracted and represented. The product of merging these tools is a 3D artificial-mapping of rock classification (Qi-system), geological conditions and Lugeon units that permits, as far as possible, to understand more and better the flow behavior."

The authors describe two stratiform intrusions within a two miles thick ophiolite belt, one of the many ophiolite (serpentine) belts of the eugeosynclinal sequences of the Kalgoorlie System (metamorphic age c.2700 million years). Unusually good evidence of gravitational differentiation involving cumulates for an Alpine type peridotite-gabbro intrusion has been obtained, in spite of modifications of the original igneous rocks imposed by regional metamorphism. Unmetamorphosed relics of cumulate rocks are a surprising feature of this occurIfence.'fhe differentiation process reflected in the layered sequences is compared to that of the Stillwater Intrusion, Montana. Phase, cryptic and rhythmic layering are recognized. The economic significance of this study lies not only in the possibility of nickel mineralization in this ophiolite belt, but also in that much detailed information on the nature of these belts, which is difficult to obtain in the case of the more altered and sheared rocks of the belts carrying gold and nickel ore deposits nearby, is gathered from the Yilmia occurrences.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, copper coolers, freeze lining, monitoring, Saveway The use of water-cooled copper components as sidewall elements of submerged arc furnaces and other pyrometallurgical applications has become increasingly common. The high cooling efficiency of copper has made it possible to increase the service life of furnace refractories when compared to conventional refractory linings. However even the self-healing effect of ?freezing? worn areas of the lining does not necessarily protect the copper coolers against wear or corrosion completely. In order to avoid furnace explosions, various methods have been used to monitor the wear of coolers. Unfortunately, these have not been able to consistently identify localized wear. Thos Begbie (South African) and SAVEWAY (German) jointly developed technology to embed a line sensor into the copper cooler during the casting process. This system allows an exhaustive monitoring of the copper cooler. A SAVELINE sensor is placed inside the copper-cooling panel between the water-cooling passage and the hot face of the panel. The sensor follows the meandering shape of the cooling water channels. In the first instance, the sensor provides analogue information as the thickness of the copper reduces. Secondly, this wear signal will be confirmed by a signal of interruption if the sensor is washed away. Because of the structure of the sensor, a self-diagnosis is possible and indications can be confirmed (double proofed). Subsequent to the manufacture of some test pieces, coolers for a large submerged arc furnace were manufactured. The sensorized coolers have been installed at the intermittent surface (slag line) where the largest amount of corrosion has been encountered. The system has been operating since December 2005 in what is considered one of the largest submerged arc furnaces in South Africa.

The first introduction of fuzzy theory in the nineteenth century created room for continuous research and application in various fields. Fuzzy set theory has been globally applied in geotechnical engineering, and research in this field continues to date. The fuzzy inference system is considered to be one of the most popular techniques adopted to resolve some of the geomechanical challenges faced in both surface and underground excavations. This paper unpacks fuzzy theory-based approaches in mine geomechanics with the aim of expanding the innovative application of the same approach specifically in tunnel geomechanics. This aim was achieved by conducting a review of recent successful and unsuccessful applications of fuzzy inference systems in underground excavations/tunnelling geomechanics. Indeed, this review has outlined some cardinal points associated with the ability of the technique to solve complex geomechanics problems. However, the success of the technique was accompanied by a few limitations associated with the methodology. Finally, a future outlook associated with the technique has been established.

The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

"The land-pebble district, the larger of the two producing areas of Florida, is situated in Polk County and in the eastern part of Hillsborough County. About 80 per cent at the phosphate rock produced in the United States in recent years has been mined from this area. The phosphate ores, locally termed matrix. are beds of sands and clays containing the phosphate pebbles, considered to be Pliocene in age, derived by marine action from underlying Miocene phosphatic marls, and are covered by practically barren sands and clays that have been deposited more recently. Open-pit mining is practiced; hydraulic mining, which has been intensively developed in this district, is used exclusively for mining the matrix and, by some companies for removing the overburden, although drag-line excavators have become established and are proving economical for stripping operations. From the pits the matrix is pumped to adjacent washing plants for beneficiation. The product of the washers. after drying, enters the world markets as Florida pebble phosphate.In this district recovery of the phosphate pebbles by the washing plants has not been particularly effective in the past. The screening, designed to effect a seperation at about 20 mesh (0.033 inches), has not been well controlled. Washer rejects discarded to the waste dumps have contained appreciable amounts of material analyzing above the minimum commercial grade - 66 per cent B.P.L. (bone phosphate of lime). Such losses of commercial fractions should be considered avoidable, and have been discussed at length in a previous paper.3"

This report deals with information regarding a new Medium Frequency (MF) Wireless Communication System for underground mines. This new telecommunication system works on low loss electromagnetic wave propagation modes which allow it to provide quality radio communications almost anywhere in a mine. Tests show the MF system can provide improved safety and managerial control, increased productivity, better organizational team-work and reduced maintenance cost; furthermore, MF's unique design allows for easy installation at a minimum cost. This paper covers the following: 1) MF design plan, 2) Overview of mine radio communications systems, 3) Preparations needed for designing an MF system, 4) MF equipment, 5) MF installation, 6) MF design considerations, 7) MF design specifications, and 8) Recommendations dealing with MF system. Experiments in four mines are illustrated to demonstrate the success and viability of the MF system. The mines range from small (500 tons/day) to large (67,000 tons/day) capacity and represent several different mining methods. The MF Wireless Communication System represents an advancement in mining communication and the groundwork for other advanced mine systems.

The analysis of subsidence due to the opening of an underground void (mining, water exploitation or civil works hole) is a problem usually hard to solve. First of all, it requires a predictive model, in order to define both the displacement magnitude and area affected by subsidence. Such model should be validated with measurements of the actual movements sustained on the surface, in order to adjust it properly and enable influence of future behaviour in a reliable way. Two different kinds of problems might arise. On one side, it is necessary to control and measure surface movements in a very exhaustive way during a long period of time, beginning before underground works take place and finishing years after they are over. Furthermore, three factors bring in errors, some times of magnitudes higher than the displacement magnitudes measured. These include: the fact that reliable and long-term information cannot always be achieved; the precision of measuring devices; and the design of the topographical network itself. In addition, the predictive models more widely used only apply to certain excavation geometries, mainly to horizontal holes. In light of this background, the Group of Rock Engineering, of the University of Oviedo Mining Department, has developed a working methodology and a specific software tool, Subsidence 3D, to estimate ground displacements and strains. The program will allow for predictive models to be defined and also allows the treatment of data related with topographical marks and its comparative analysis with calculated results. The software has been programmed using Visual C++. Graphical outputs however are generated using AutoCAD 2000. This paper mainly refers to a practical situation, an underground coalmine, remarking the main difficulties arisen during the study of the available information and proposing how to solve them. It has often been said by consulting engineers that foundation contractors are in the business of taking risks. One would agree that the mere fact a foundation project can be budgeted, planned, engineered and executed solely on the reliability of eight test borings made at a proposed site having an area of approximately 19,000 square feet, is a risky proposition, in and of itself. Now imagine that this site is actually one half of a city block located in an urban setting in an old, congested, historical neighborhood, surrounded by narrow city streets and historic landmark buildings. And suppose that the required depth of excavation for the construction of the new building on this site is approximately 35 feet and the natural groundwater table is at a depth below existing grade of only 25 feet. Given the difficult site conditions outlined above, one could certainly add the words "challenging" and "complicated" to the inherent word "risky" when describing the construction techniques involved to undertake a foundation project of this magnitude. This case study will discuss in detail how the excavation, sheeting, dewatering and underpinning work was accomplished as well as the problems overcome along the way.

The Antamina Mine is located in the mountainous region of the Ancash Department of Peru at an elevation of approximately 4200m.The 120 km main access road crosses the headwaters of numerous high-value trout streams and is adjacent to pristine lakes, some of very high ecological and scenic value. In addition, the mine discharges mine water and tailings supernatant to the Antamina and Ayash watersheds. These streams provide the primary water supply for irrigation by local residents and provide excellent fishery habitat. The rock walls and earthen diversions constructed by historic and current indigenous residents of Peru are world-renowned and local residents continue this tradition, passed down from the Inca Civilization, for both agricultural purposes and water distribution. The key elements of sustainable development – economic, environmental and social development have been incorporated into Antamina’s sustainable development program through integration of indigenous knowledge and capabilities into enhanced storm water, erosion reduction and sediment control systems. Examples of incorporating indigenous technologies and knowledge into cost-effective and environmentally sound environmental controls are:(1) placement of rock walls on steep terrain to reduce slope length and erosion, (2) installation of rock walls (porous rock check dams) within elongated sediment ponds to increase detention time, (3) construction of rock-lined ditches to convey clean water (4)use of rock walls, with or without geotextile, to function as a seep berm, and (5) appropriate selection and usage of native Andean species for protection of canals and sediment ponds, and steep slopes.

Previous legislation did not cover all work places, many areas were excluded from coverage, and there were at least 14 different acts and dozens of sets of regulations dealing with various aspects of health and safety.

It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2.
