In the October 1998 issue of the Holmes Safety Association Bulletin, NIOSH authors Mark Stephenson and Carol Merry wrote the article Hearing loss among miners and measures to protect hearing, which focused on the extensiveness of hearing loss among miners and the use of hearing protection to prevent hearing loss. While the primary importance of engineering controls in preventing hearing loss was discussed, since miners do not generally have control over their work en­vironment or assignments, the article focused on the importance of consis­tent use of hearing protection. In this article, all aspects of a compre­hensive approach to the prevention of hearing loss in miners will be covered. The discussions will do the following: ? describe application of the hierarchy of controls in preventing hear­ing loss in miners, ? give an example for each type of control measure and its impact, ? explain the major provisions, be­yond the hierarchy of controls, of the recent NIOSH document en-titled Criteria for a Recommended Standard: Occupa­tional Noise Exposure, Revised Criteria 1998 relative to a hearing loss prevention program, and ? summarize important points on control of noise exposure for every miner to remember, equipment in most facets of operations. Miners are well aware of noisy areas in or around equipment, icluding extraction machinery such as draglines, power shovels, longwall shearers, and continuous mining machines; powered haulage equipment such as load-haul-dumps, shuttle cars, large trucks, and continuous haulage units; roof bolting machines; jackleg drills and stopers; auxiliary equipment such as compressors, fans, and pumps; size reduction equipment, etc. They are not well aware of the insidious nature of pro­gressive hearing loss, which is per­manent, but they are generally aware of what levels of noise are hazardous and what measures can be taken to reduce their personal noise exposure. Behaviorally, however, there are many reasons why miners choose not to use hearing protection faithfully.

Political risk is an integral part of the mining business in northern Andean countries. Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela all have a higher than average political risk compared with other South American countries. Successful operations require good political-risk information, a thorough political-risk-management plan and a strategy to deal with political-risk perception on the part of the investing public. Colombia is perceived as about the riskiest place in the world to do business. A selection of recent headlines reads: “Colombia on the brink” (Economist, 1998), “Colombia’s ship of state is sinking” (Insight on the News, 1998), or simply “Bad news” (US Catholic, 1998). The World’s Most Dangerous Places rates Colombia as “currently the most dangerous place in the Western Hemisphere, and perhaps the world” (Aral and Pelton,1998). And many prospective investors and analysts say to Greystar Resources: “Yes, we love your results, but Colombia?”

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Two 2 in-diameter 6x25 fiber core (FC) ropes were degraded on a bending fatigue machine. These were the second and third ropes in a series of tests on this construction and size rope. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope Lo determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that once a wire rope nears the end of its service life, both deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength begin to increase at an accelerated rate.

This paper discusses the pile foundation of tall buildings in Shenzhen region. For 156 constructed tall buildings exceeding 18 storeys, about 86. 5 per cent of the sum. The two main types of foundation used are the semi?machine?bored/slurry drilled cast?in?situ pile and the excavation pile (hand ?dug caisson). The engineering geologiical condition in Shenzhen was analysed. In general, the bed rock level is not too deep. It belongs to hard rock, but the geologic structure is more complex and the tectonic fissures is plenty. According to experiences of the researches, tests, designs and constructions of pile foundation, we present the basic design principle of pile foundations for tall buildings as follows; (1) pile strength control to select the pile type and to choice the cross sectional dimen­sions, must be in compliance with the strength of the pile. (2) bearing stratum strongly weathered, moderartely weathered and slightly weathered rock may be used as the bearing stratum. (3) bearing pile bored /drilled cast-in-situ pile designed as an end bearing pile. (4) friction pile precast concrete pile, prestressed concrete tubular pile and driven cast-in-situ pile designe as a friction pile. In case, pile design is in compliance with these principles, it may be safe, economical and reasonable.

The Birmingham Coal and Coke – Knight Mine is a single seam coal mine in central Alabama. As pit development progressed in 2013, concerns over increasing vibration levels resulted in modifications to the blasting program that inhibited shot size and coal recovery. By January 2014, while still over 1,400 feet (427 m) from the regulatory seismograph, vibration levels climbed above 70% of the mine permit limit, even with triple decking of holes and reduced burden and spacing. At this time the decision was made to commit to the use of signature waveform analysis and precision programmable electronic detonators to minimize vibration and maximize the amount of coal that could be recovered before vibration levels reached permit limits.

Coal mining operations are large-scale, long-term frameworks of high complexity. Mining organizations accumulate, develop, and leverage knowledge from diverse scientific and technological fields as a result of these operations. Both practical experience and existing literature indicate that knowledge management (KM) methods within the mining industry primarily target solving immediate technical challenges and operational requirements. However, they are not commonly regarded as strategic tools to enhance the performance and competitiveness of mining companies. Empirical evidence from the Greek mining industry suggests that the management of available knowledge is intricate, less effective, and dysfunctional. This paper presents a methodology based on the principles of quantitative research (QNR), collaboratively conducted with a group of mining experts, to assess the KM landscape in the Greek mining industry. The methodology involves a structured data collection framework using questionnaires, subsequent statistical analysis, a discussion on critical methodological aspects, and an interpretation of results focusing on key aspects useful for planners and designers of KM systems in the mining industry. Finally, the paper concludes by summarizing the methodology’s outcomes and proposing further perspectives for research.

El presente trabajo señala la geología, litología y mineralización del yacimiento minero El Tapado del distrito Yanacocha, situado al norte de Cajamarca. Este se encuentra conformado por diferentes depósitos auríferos epitermales de alta sulfuración, los cuales se desarrollan dentro de un vulcanismo calco-alcalino de composición andesítica a dacítica de edad Mioceno y son correlacionables con la Formación Porculla del Grupo Calipuy. La geología del depósito está conformada por rocas porfiríticas (intrusiones) y flujos piroclásticos tales como tufos de cristales, tufos líticos y brechas piroclásticas afectados por eventos eruptivos de brechas freáticas - freatomagmáticas. Todas estas rocas han sufrido posterior alteración hidrotermal con ensambles típicos de sistemas tipo ácido-sulfato. La mineralización económica está controlada por procesos hidrotermales y se encuentra asociada a sílice masiva y sílice vuggy ( 1-10 g/t Au y estructuras de hasta 136 g/t Au ) y en menor grado sílice alunita y sílice granular (moderada a baja ley).

Same-batch and non-blind as well as blind pulp duplicates are often submitted as quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) control samples to a routine laboratory along with routine assays (and other control samples such as reference material samples). The current ways of interpreting the results of duplicate assays to derive QA/QC conclusions and decisions, however, has not yet been formalised in a scientific manner. The current, prevailing approach and its limitations are reviewed and a new method is proposed as a substitute tool. This new tool should allow for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch rejection) as well as laboratory performance assessment with time on reproducibility.

Mortlake Works were opened in 1886, and has since grown to the vast undertaking inspected by members of the Institute.The Kent Street Works were closed in 1921. Land rehabilitation at Golden Cross is reviewed, 8 years after mine closure in 1997/98, from the perspectives of a Peer Reviewer (land rehabilitation) and a Regional Council Officer (Resource Consents compliance). Land rehabilitation items we discuss include: management of restored pastures, native plantings (on-site riparian and block plantings and off-site environmental riparian enhancement plantings), wetlands (on-site tailings lake and sediment ponds littoral zone plantings, and basement of the open pit; and off-site wetlands enhancement plantings), pine plantations on-site and on surrounding land, stabilization of the Tailings Lake Embankment (landslide) and Open Pit capping, capping of acid-mine-rock, stability of discharge channels, buildings and amenities, public access for recreation, educational uses, and future management of the site. Pest control has helped to conserve the rare and endangered HochstetterÆs (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and ArcheyÆs (L. archeyi) frogs, and a regionally significant stand of rare swamp maire (Syzygium maire) has been conserved and fenced.

Exploration for seafloor massive sulfides is currently mainly focused on investigation for active hydrothermal vent fields. However, most of the resource potential is thought to be related to inactive, large deposits that had enough time to accumulate sufficient tonnage. At the same time, ageing of these deposits will ultimately result also in burial acted by either sediments and/or volcanic deposits. We currently lack the technologies to explore for these deposits in a time- and cost-efficient manner. In the fall of 2012 we used a number of AUV-based technologies to explore and image a sulfide occurrence at the Palinuro Volcanic Complex in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea; Fig. 1) where sampling and drilling have documented a buried polymetallic barite-pyrite dominated site (Petersen et al., 2014). Sulfide mineralization is here covered by volcaniclastic and pelagic sediments and only red sediment staining and the presence of few tubeworm bushes indicated recent hydrothermal activity - black smoker venting is absent. We used AUVbased high-resolution bathymetry, sidescan sonar imaging, subbottom profiling, as well as magnetics to describe, in a quantitative way, the previously known sulfide-bearing areas as well as to successfully explore for new hydrothermal sites including large chimney structures (Figs. 2). Additionally chemical sensors (CTD, Eh, turbidity) investigated the water column for signs of hydrothermal activity in areas not previously investigated, but at the end, only weak anomalies were found in the southern part of the summit.

This paper highlights the strong safety and progressive engineering cultures th at existed and continues within the company. A long-term view of the business coupled with proven professionalism is amply developed. Quite dearly, to revert to private ownership is not a return to Victorian values but ‘back to the future’.

LAKE MARGARET is situate high up on the West Coast Range of Tasmania, and lies in a roughly triangular valley formed by the ridge of Mount Sedgwick on the south, the ridge formed by Mounts Geikie and Tyndal on the west, amid a ridge connecting Mounts Geikie and Sedgwick on the east. Any description of this hydroelectric installation, however brief, naturally divides itself into the following sections:1. STORAGE BASIN, &c. 2. DAM. 3. PIPE LINES. 4. POWER STATION. 5. TRANSMISSION LINES. 6. SUBSTATION 7. VARIOUS WORKS utilizing the power.The Storage Basin used is the natural lake itself, which has a maximum length of 110 chains, a maximum width of 40 chains, and a mean arelj. of 300 acres. The water-level of the lake, which has been maintained by a natural dam, is 2143 ft. above sea-level. The approximate catchment area at present appropriated is 7 sq. miles, and the rainfall, on the average, about 144 in. per annum. It is possible to increase this catchment area by suitable races, &c. Dam.-The dam constructed is of very small dimensions, and is not a storage dam in the usual sense of the term. The natural storage ot-the lake itself was used by means of a channel cut through the natural dam and thence to the mouth of the lake, the lake level being thus temporarily lowered while the outlet pipes, screens, &c., were placed in position, and the channel was then closed again with a concrete wall in which the pipes and screens are set. Mining claims must have a discovery of a valuable mineral deposit to be valid. When required, a Federal government mineral examiner makes a determination of validity and recommendations thereof to authorized management officials. The examiner should show whether or not an existing mining operation, or a proposed operation have economic viability. This is accomplished through an analysis of legal entities, land status and use, geologic and mineralogic relationships, and mining, milling and processing techniques considered in an appropriate economic evaluation framework. A framework involves market and market entry studies, reserve analyses, all costs analysis, royalty buyouts, tax structure, discount rate of return, and escalation and risk factors. An income approach to value is then used by means of a simple or complex discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis to certify validity. Whether one claim is owned by a single miner, or hundreds of claims are owned by a large corporation, thorough, fair, consistent, and appropriate economic concepts should be applied by the mineral examiner.

Blast optimization in open-pit operations is a task that often remains at a theoretical stage. Indeed, when it comes to operational blast design and onsite implementation, time restrictions and field conditions make it difficult to execute a planned pattern accurately and optimization according to local conditions is even more difficult. For example, adjusting a drill pattern to a complex face geometry is not something that can be easily undertaken on site. Blasters and engineers will do their best trying to distribute boreholes over the bench and even then, it can take them hours to achieve an acceptable layout. Similar situations occur with delay sequences, when trying to adjust them to address selectivity or vibration issues. For these reasons, operational blast design will often remain at a very basic level and the required adjustments are laid aside due to the difficulty of implementing them on site.

Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route.The Australian Atomic Energy Commission is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and· calcination-reduction steps. Solvent extraction from sulphate media is also under study with a view to developing a process to produce a nuclear grade product at the mine treatment plant site.

This study relates to continuous face haulage systems in underground coal mines, and was performed by Joy Manufacturing Company for the U. S. Bureau of Mines under the Bureau of Mines Contract No. HO 242025. The effective starting date for this work was June 14, 1974. There were two main reasons for making this study, the first being to find a safer system to move coal away from the face than the currently predominant shuttle car system, and the second being to seek ways to advance the state-of-the-art of continuous face haulage as a means of increasing coal production.
