The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The ?slope stability radar? (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR remotely scans rock slopes to continuously measure any surface movement and can be used to detect and alert users of wall movements with sub-millimeter precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many metalliferous and coal mines throughout the world. Over 80 systems are currently being used with current operations in 17 countries. Greater than 200 rock slope collapses and waste dump failures (from several to millions of tones) have been monitored, with ?warning? precursor movements recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper will present recent case studies of the SSR operation in coal and metalliferous mines. Slope Stability Hazards and Rock Slope Monitoring in Open Pit Mines Surface mining often creates excavation boundaries which are steeper than those would be created under natural processes in the same rock type. They are also undertake quite rapid stress changes during mining and are influenced by significant external forces such as blast vibrations and changes in groundwater. These conditions are likely to allow some degree of instability to develop in the pit slopes. The hazards associated with this instability of pit slopes can be extremely variable in character; ranging from small cobble sized rocks dislodging and falling from mine benches to complete collapse of entire pit walls. It is usually the position of mine geotechnical or geological staff to assess these hazards for mine operations. The assessment of hazards due to unstable slopes can be done by visual observation of precursor signs such as fracturing or rilling of loose material. A more reliable indicator of instability involves the quantitative measurement of outward movement and acceleration of material as an instability mechanism develops. There is strong evidence that small precursor movements of a rock wall occur for an extended period prior to rock slope collapse (Hoek and Bray, 1981). Development of a monitoring system, adopting acceptable slope deformation criteria coupled with warning systems and design of stabilization or risk reduction measures if appropriate has become a standard method of dealing with slope instability. Framework for Slope Hazard Management using the SSR A framework for the management of slope hazards is shown in Figure 1 (discussed in detail in Harries, 2007). Although this framework is specifically for use with the Slope Stability Radar, a similar framework could be developed for other monitoring technologies for monitoring slope deformation. An important point to consider is the sequential nature of the hazard management framework from selecting the context ? identifying hazards ? analysing hazards ? evaluating hazards ? treating hazards. [ ] Once the context of the system has been developed (for example ? to monitor for rapid bench scale collapse), the identification of hazards is the next stage in hazard management. Identification of slope hazards can be relatively straightforward due to the visual nature of the information that the SSR system produces. The areas of excessive wall deformation are highlighted in color maps of the mine slope with a co-aligned photographic image to review the actual site of interest. The responsible personnel must then analyses this data, usually reviewing the deformation style and rate, as well as the size of area that appears to be failing. This information can then be evaluated against organisation protocols (for example it may be only a small sub-bench failure that will be ?caught? by existing benches and hence can be categorized as a lower risk). Once these hazards are evaluated they can then be treated if required. Two major options are available to reduce the risk during this treatment option. We can reduce the likelihood of failure ? for example by buttressing the failure or de-pressurising of water pressures in a slope. However, the most likely plan of action is to reduce the consequence of the failure. One of the most successful opportunities to reduce the consequence of a slope failure is to ensure that no personnel or mining equipment is present at the location of a slope failure when collapse finally occurs. This has been the major benefit of the SSR system to the different mining operations around the world. The term" sandstone" is applied to a rock composed of mineral grains smaller than pebbles, cemented together more or less firmly. "Conglomerate" is the name given to a rock composed of pebbles, or pebbles and bowlders, of various sizes cemented together. If the pebbles are large and well rounded the rock is sometimes called " pudding stone." Although the term "sandstone" includes all varieties, certain specific terms are applied to types characterized by particular compositions, colors, or uses. "Quartzite" is a variety in which the individual grains are so firmly cemented together with quartz that the rock will fracture as easily through the grains as through the cement; "ferruginous sandstone" is one rich in iron as cementing material, or as grains, or both; "micaceous sandstone" is one in which mica is prominent; " arkose" is a feldspathic or granitic sandstone composed of angular grains; "calcareous sandstone" is one containing considerable calcium carbonate; and" argillaceous sandstone" is one containing considerable clay. The term "flagstone" is used for a rock that splits readily into sheets suitable for flagging; "freestone" for rock than can be cut or carved readily, and with equal ease in all directions; and" ganistel'," in the United States, for sandstone suitable for the manufacture of refractories. Others are named from their characteristic colors such as " bluestone," " redstone," or " brownstone."

Lime is of tremendous importance to modern industries. In agriculture it is regarded as essential to the continued fertility of many important regions; in building it is indispensable, and in the many ramifications of the chemical industries it is so necessary and so widely employed that it has been designated "the king of all the bases." Figure 1 shows a general view of a modern lime plant producing more than 500 tons of lime daily. In 1924 the production of lime was reported from nearly every State in the Union and amounted to more than 4,000,000 tons, valued at, nearly $40,000,000. For a production of that magnitude between 8,000,000 and 9,000,000 tons of limestone are required. The many problems involved in winning this great quantity of raw material from the natural rock and preparing it for the kilns have in the past received little attention from any governmental agency. Therefore, in compliance with a request from representatives of the National Lime Association in 1922, the Bureau of Mines began a study of problems in limestone quarrying in an effort to advance more economical methods of operation and the utilization of waste material. Field studies were made at many quarries, and the information thus compiled, besides data already at hand from work in other branches of the stone industries, were disseminated to operators in the form of mimeographed Reports of Investigations, eight of which were issued at intervals during 1922, 1923, and 1924. A questionnaire was appended to each report, and quarry operators were invited to contribute additional information obtained as a result of their actual experience and observation. Operators of lime plants have been cordial in their responses and have supplied the bureau with much valuable information. From the data thus obtained, supplemented by later field studies, the revised reports have been combined to form the major part of this bulletin, which is believed fairly to represent present knowledge on the subject of quarrying limestone for lime manufacture.

Auger operations produced 14 million tons of coal in 1974, or approximately 5% of all surface mined coal. It was the most efficient of all coal mining methods, producing 40.0 tons per man-day. Exhibit 1.1 gives a breakdown of productivity of all coal mining methods. However, compared to other methods, the coal recovery rate is relatively low. For example, a triple-headed auger in a 35-inch seam would recover approximately 50% of the coal in the seam as compared to a 90 to 95% recovery rate for strip mining and a 55 to 65% recovery rate for deep-mining. The low auger recovery rate is due to the circular cuts and pillars left in the seam.

Along with the humanitarian need for preventing accidents the cost of injuries must be considered. As a means of bringing the facts concerning the prevalence of accidents in mining and their direct cost before the operating officials and others interested in accident prevention in the mining industry, the United. States Bureau of Mines ha as recently made studies and published reports dealing with these subjects in several States 4. This report gives available data on the causes and direct costs of accidents in Virginia coal mines for the 4-year period 1929 to 1932, inclusive. Mounting compensation costs and insurance rates resulting from mine injuries indicate the necessity of measures to decrease the number and severity of accidents. These direct costs, as well as additional losses of an indirect nature, can be eliminated from the cost of production to the extent that accidents are prevented or reduced in severity.

"The Lone Tree demonstration was an important milestone in bringing High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology into hard rock applications in the mining industry. HPGRs have become standard equipment in the cement, iron ore, and diamond industries over the past fifteen years, but their use in severe duties found in the hard rock mining sector has been restricted due to high roll wear and subsequent low availability. HPGR availability has historically been limited because of frequent downtime for edge weld rebuilding as the rolls wore and short tyre life from high roll surface wear rates.Recent advancements in HPGR wear protection are now being evaluated for commercial applications in the gold and copper mining industry where this technology may offer benefits in comminuting hard and/or abrasive ores and in improving metal recovery in heap leaching applications.Proving the feasibility of HPGRs for processing competent, abrasive gold ore, Newmont Mining Corporation, the world's largest gold producer, operated an HPGR demonstration plant employing a POLYSIUS (POLYCOM) HPGR incorporating some unique wear protection, at their Lone Tree gold mine near Winnemucca, Nevada. Results of the successful demonstration are presented and evaluated in this paper.The Lone Tree HPGR demonstration plant operated for three months, from April through June 2003. The HPGR operated for 1626 hours and processed 141,000 tons of ore. This technology demonstration focused on measuring operating performance, wear characteristics, and availability of today's HPGR technology.Polysius' innovative roll surface wear protection system eliminated edge-welding downtime. Improved surface wear protection extended tyre life to predicted durations acceptable for very abrasive service. The POLYCOM HPGR is now deemed suitable for selected hard rock applications."

Long-term closure alternative selection for heap leach pad effluent is a daunting task. Passive water treatment, if designed with enough long-term capacity, can minimize long term O&M while meeting water quality objectives. Leach pad effluent from a 30-acre leach pad at Basin Creek Mine, Basin, Montana was targeted for long-term water treatment using a passive water treatment system. The objectives and results of design and construction are: 1. Design a long-term passive system utilizing existing infrastructure. 2. Construct a field scale pilot test at the mine site.

The inquiry into the explosion at the Moura No. 2 Mine in August 1994 recommended -?Emergency procedures should be exercised at each mine on a systematic basis, the minimum requirement being on an annual basis for each mine.? (Windridge et al. 1996). In December 1996 the ?Approved Standard for the Conduct of Emergency Procedures Exercises? was published and has been subsequently revised (Queensland Department of Mines and Energy Safety and Health Division 1999). This document provided guidelines for conducting mine site emergency exercises as well as the requirement for a test of state-wide emergency response by holding a Level 1 Mine Emergency Exercise at one mine on an annual basis. From 1998 to date (January 2008) ten Level 1 Mine Emergency Exercises have been held in Queensland, Australia. This paper discusses each of the exercises conducted to date as well as the logistics, scenario preparation, planning and organising required to conduct emergency exercises at this level.

An analytical solution of the integro-differential equation of batch grinding is proposed as a first appoximation to the xYt surface. The size distribution equation (xY plane) is a three parameter equation previously suggested. Possible refinements are outlined. Comminution kinetics research is presently following several related courses. Some are equivalent, in that they represent different ways of viewing the same facet of the problem, though the entire endeavor cannot be described as being completely integrated. The purpose of this note is to propose and discuss a framework into which the various approaches might be fitted. This must clearly be founded upon an analysis of the xYt surface.&apos; (See also Fig. 1 of Reference 26.) The investigations referred to above comprise mainly researches into the following: (1) The kinetics of the creation of the finer sizes during relatively small grinding times. This is the Fahrenwald-Arbiter-Bhrany 2-3 approach which leads to equations equivalent to a special case of the charles4 relationship. It emerges that initial production of fines follow essentially zero order* kinetics. (2) Disappearance kinetics of the coarser fractions. This appears to be a first order relationship.5-6 (3) Prediction of the xYt surface via the selection and breakage functions utilizing computer-programmed or approximate solutions of the integro-differential equation of batch grinding.5,8-17 A recent discussion by Mika et al.5 references the relevant literature up to about 1966. In addition to these main-stream researches there is some work on the minor topic of extremely long grinding time considered as a limiting case.18-19 The field is supported by investigations into the size distribution of fragments produced by breakage processes, some of this work being most valuably statistical-mechanical in nature.20-25 Better fitting equations, however, are obtained by statistical and curve-fitting methods.26 This

Performance-based approach to design of structures including foundations was adopted after enforcement of the revised Building Standard Law in Japan in 2000. The use of piled-raft foundation is favorable for medium-rise buildings in soft ground because of its good performance. In the design of the piled-raft foundation (Architectural Institute of JAPAN2002), vertical load is usually carried by the raft foundation, while the pile is primarily meant to control settlement of the structure. Shaft friction is expected to be larger in a nodular pile(Karkee, et.al., 1998) since it has larger surface area than a straight pile, and such piles are frequently used in piled-raft foundations. Since few structures with piled-raft foundation exist currently, the settlement characteristics of piled-raft foundation have not been fully clarified. To design piled-raft foundations with better confidence, the mechanism of vertical bearing capacity and the spatial distribution of settlement should be clarified, for which the actual behavior of the building-foundation system needs to be evaluated. This paper presents observations of settlement of a building with a piled-raft foundation at a soft ground site. The building is a steel structure covering an area an 766 m2, and consists of two-storey office block and one-storey warehouse block. The filled ground of about 5-m thickness at the ground surface is underlain by approximately 4-m thick alluvial sand layer below which lies about a 17-m thick alluvial clay layer with SPT N-value less than 2. The piles used in the piled-raft foundation are 12-m long nodular piles with nodal diameter of 500 mm (pile shaft diameter is 400 mm). The bored pre-cast piling method (Karkee, et.al., 1998) was used to install the piles. To evaluate the foundation settlement, the method of analysis of three-dimensional frame system, utilized widely in Japan, was adopted in combination with the foundation system. Basic assumptions were: (i) total ground settlement is evaluated as the sum of immediate settlement and consolidation settlement, (ii) immediate settlement is evaluated from the Mindlin?s solution in which strain dependency of shear modulus of soil is considered, (iii) settlement in clayey layers is evaluated by the one-dimensional consolidation theory, and (iv) shear spring between soil and pile shaft is represented by a hyperbolic function. The applicability of the method of analysis was verified by comparison with results of field monitoring of building settlement.

The paper will describe Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) as a tool which will enable us to build a project ?virtually? on a computer before constructing and operating it in the real world. VDC computer models are built, using information from various sources including survey, 3D laser scanning, CAD and GIS to represent the project and its components in a coordinated and consolidated infrastructure model. This model is reviewed and evaluated by, and shared among project teams including owners, con-tractors, designers, engineers, construction managers, stakeholders and operators. The use of inert gas systems to extinguish mine fires has been the subject of research for some time in the United States. In some European countries, it is an established practice. Tests were conducted with the CMI Inert Gas System (CMI), which is being used by the Polish mining industry. This system utilizes a modified jet aircraft engine and afterburner as a compact source of combustion products with a very low (less than one percent) oxygen content. Water injected into the combustion products stream provides evaporative cooling and forms a mist with a high cooling capacity. The CMI system was used under controlled conditions to extinguish coal pile fires at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Experimental Mine in Bruceton, Pennsylvania. The test results show that the CMI system can be used conveniently to extinguish fires quickly and to maintain an inert atmosphere in the fire zone to prevent re-ignition.

Support design in jointed or blocky rock masses is often approached by the use of either &apos;rules of thumb&apos;, rock mass classification systems such as the Q-system (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) or RMR (Bieniawski, 1973) or conventional wedge analysis. Generally, this requires that a number of key simplifying assumptions are made and the support system is designed to cater for either a mean, most likely, or worst case scenario depending on the risk tolerance. The design block size is often a major uncertainty and often a worst case block size based on excavation span is used. Thompson and Windsor (2007) state that it is inappropriate to base support designs on the excavation size as these size blocks rarely occur if discontinuity trace lengths are considered. Probabilistic keyblock methods can be used to determine the most likely design block sizes. A methodology is presented whereby JBlock software (Estherhuizen, 1996) is used to estimate potential block sizes as part of the support design process. Using information such as the spacing, orientation and length of discontinuities, it is possible to simulate blocks in the walls of an excavation (Esterhuizen and Streuders, 1998). Keyblock analysis methods (Goodman and Shi, 1985) are used to evaluate whether blocks are removable and whether the chosen support will be sufficient to ensure stability. Data from two mines is used to demonstrate how probabilistic keyblock analyses can be used in support design. Discontinuity data was used to generate 10 000 removable blocks and the design block size statistics were determined. For one mine this information was used to scale blocks in a conventional. Unwedge analysis whilst for the other mine, the point estimate method (Harr, 1987) was applied. The choice of appropriate design acceptance criteria in terms of factor of safety and probability of failure is also considered.

One of the more important functions of the Federal Bureau of Mines is conservation of the life and health of employees of the mineral and allied industries. Since its very beginning the Bureau has encouraged competition between mine rescue and first-aid teams as a means of stimulating interest in safety and accident-prevention work. In addition to sponsoring competition on a national and international scale during the past 45 years, the Bureau has also assisted State mining departments, mining companies, and mining organizations in holding State, district, company, and other local meets. This assistance includes providing instructors to train teams, judges, and other contest officials. The Bureau has also furnished problems and outlines for working them, judges I discount sheets (scorecards), contest rules, and problem judges. In fact, Bureau representatives participate in nearly all State, district, and company contests and have bad complete charge of some contests.

Tasks during Phase I of this contract effort were performed in four principal functional areas. These were geology, hydrology, reclamation and mining. Data were gathered from literature reviews, mine visits, survey of manufacturers, consultation with government agencies, and unpublished or private communications with contractors and consultants. The data collected were analyzed for omissions or inaccuracies, then organized into tables, graphs and flow charts to provide a concise body of technical and cost data suitable for the engineering analyses required in Phase II of this contract. Maps illustrating estimated grade and thickness of the oil shale were prepared, some of which are included as exhibits to this report. A preliminary mine layout was performed to test the completeness of the collected data.

Mining is a significant emitter of greenhouse gases and is the focus of increasing attention from green groups and regulators. Miners need to know their own carbon emissions and how they compare with the rest of the industry. Miners and mining companies need to know where they fit in the emissions curve. Who is in the bottom quartile? This article is based on research report data from minecost.com and Metalytics Pty Ltd which detail the specific carbon dioxide emissions for 208mines producing 90% or more of western world copper, zinc, lead and nickel in 2007. The copper and nickel mines also include Norilsk in Russia, KGHM in Poland and Kazakhmys in Kazakhstan. This is the first time that such information has become available.
