The fishery of this section of the North Atlantic is a vital resource to which a major oil spill or blow-out would impose an intolerable burden, This means that production systems must be designed and built to be fail-safe.The experiences of mining in Bell Island and Cape Breton have shown that it is possible to operate beneath the ocean floor, and this technology may hold the key for safe, reliable and economic production, This paper attempts to define particular problems and outline possible solutions.IntroductionOUR DISCUSSION is subject to the assumption that large hydrocarbon reservoirs will be discovered in the sedimentary basin of the Labrador continental margin. The petroleum industry has not attempted to operate in a harsher area. The Labrador coastline is exposed to North Atlantic storms and icebergs year’round, Arctic pack ice occurs up to six months of each year. However, there is no doubt that, if sufficient hydrocarbon potential is outlined, development will proceed."

The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of 12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.

INTRODUCTION The state-of-the art in the area of soil-structure interaction is not sufficiently developed that one can accurately predict the earth load distribution on buried structures. This lack of knowledge has led to the use of high factors of safety in their design and conservative assumptions for the loading diagrams. As a step towards the improvement of the design methodology for buried structures, it is important to be able to apply new analytical techniques and monitor the performance data obtained on full-size buried structures. The performance data should preferably include: 1) the actual stress distribution on the buried structure, 2) stress distribution in the buried structure and surrounding soil media, 3) vertical and lateral movements in the soil adjacent to the buried structure, and 4) deflection of the buried structure. Brown (1967), Davis (1972), Krizek, et al (1974), Krizek and MacQuade (1978), and some few others have compared the performance of full-size culverts with finite element results. Despite all these efforts, a complete understanding of the soil-structure interaction problem has not yet been fully achieved. In an effort to make improvements in the existing design procedures for buried structures constructed in an open-cut, the Department of Environmental Services (DES), Washington, D.C., in conjunction with Howard University, undertook a detailed study of Section II of the Capitol Hill Relief Sewer (CHRS). Inclinometers were used to measure lateral movements of the excavation wall and the total normal interface stresses acting on the concrete sewer were obtained using glotzl total pressure cells. This paper describes the results of the field instrumentation program for acquisition of data, their comparison with the design assumptions, and the results of a series of post-construction finite element analyses of the CHRS project.

Under a DOE-funded project, four advanced flotation technologies (the Jameson cell, the Outokumpu HG Tank Cell, an open column and a packed column) were evaluated at the benchscale to identify the technology or combination of technologies that best improved fine coal recovery and reduced processing costs. The results indicated that two-stage application of the Jameson and packed column cells provided the optimal performance. Subsequently, proof-of-concept scale testing was conducted at the Cyprus Emerald Coal Preparation Plant. The results confirmed that levelized production costs were lower using two-stage cleaning with the Jameson cell followed by the packed column.

There is a large economic opportunity associated with improving metallurgical performance in mineral processing plants that use process control. Thus, future control systems will be developed towards more sophisticated user friendly, computer-based systems that use powerful software analysis and control techniques. Auto-tuning, adaptive control and process models will gain expanded use because of their transparent availability to the system designer. Control of individual unit operations will be optimized and coordinated through expert systems that monitor economic conditions and management directives and direct operations accordingly. Plant areas, once considered cost centers, will be integrated into plant-wide control systems for economic control and optimization. This article looks at new control hardware, process sensors, control strategies and software development tools. It also looks at the economics driving the continued development of advanced process control systems. Process control systems routinely used in the mining industry were born when the microprocessor was invented. They have continued along an evolutionary path from vendor specific processing hardware and proprietary operating systems to computer industry standard "open architecture" systems. The many economic forces that drive the development and functionality of these process control systems will cause this evolutionary process to continue. This report develops information and recommendations which could be used by a mine operator who desired to install a rescue chamber. Volume I covers the following major areas: atmospheric life support, configuration and construction, chamber location, power and lighting, equipment and supplies, communications, and psychological aspects and training. Actualmente el geólogo de mina toma información rutinaria, mapea los bancos de la mina, los taladros para voladura y loguea los núcleos de perforación y fragmentos del aire reverso. Para la localización en el campo utiliza un GPS que tiene una estación en tierra que permite triangular en tiempo real. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia de la función del geólogo y las herramientas de campo que utiliza para la exploración y la definición del modelo geológico en la mina Pierina. Así para la digitalización del mapeo geológico utiliza el programa AutoCad, en el caso de mapeo de taladros para voladura emplea un Colector de Datos que posee una hoja de calculo que permite recoger datos del tipo de alteración, porcentaje de arcillas, dureza y tipo de mineralización. Finalmente, la información que genera el geólogo de mina es útil para diferentes usuarios ya que sirve para mejorar el cálculo de reservas, manejar el control eficiente del minado de mineral y desmonte, así como generar el soporte geológico a los geotecnistas responsables del estudio de estabilidad de taludes del tajo abierto, así como desde el punto de vista ambiental es posible definir zonas con potencial de generar drenaje ácido de rocas.

In the usual volumetric determination of uranium, the solution containing uranium is reduced in a Jones reductor, yielding a mixture of trivalent and tetravalent uranium; the trivalent uranium is oxidized to the tetravalent state by bubbling a stream of air through the solution. The resulting solution of. Tetravalent uranium is titrated with a standard oxidant, generally sulfatoceric acid, dichromate, or permanganate; It seemed likely that the, same general procedure could be used in determining semimicro quantities of uranium if the conditions affecting the variables involved were understood more clearly than at present. In the method described below, the use of ferric sulfate to oxidize tetravalent uranium allows the titration to be made at room temperature in an essentially colorless solution with sulfatoceric acid. The latter oxidant its turn permits the use of the very stable indicator, ferroin, with its sharp color.., change and exactly reproducible blanks. Solutions of uranyl sulfate were prepared by diluting a stock solution that had been standardized gravimetrically according to the method of Lundell and Knowles (8).3/ Solutions of sulfatoceric acid were prepared according to the directions of G. F. Smith (12) and were standardized against arsenic trioxide in the presence of osmic acid according to the directions of Gleu. The cerium solutions were stored in 18-liter carboys fitted with siphon arrangements so that the bottles did not need to be opened and protected from light in a dark cupboard. Under these conditions, even the 0.01 N solution changed by less than 1 part per thousand over a period of about 6 months.

After 1990, a great process of re-organisation and economic reform has occurred in the Romanian mining sector and especially in the pitcoal mining in the Jiu Valley. This process has included both legislation and the main aspects for getting an economic efficiency in the environment issues and for dealing the problems with social impact. Accordingly, starting with the year 1993 a new mining method has been introduced to turn efficient the pitcoal mining, and we speak about mining with caved in bed. This method has two variants: - with transverse strips and caved in bed; - with long face and caved in bed. Each of the above-mentioned variants has in turn several subdivisions, depending on how the longwall is prepared and on other characteristics. By using this method, the output has increased compared to other mining methods. The main safety aspects concerning caved in mining refer to: - great emissions of methane; - technical aspects (a mining method system, supports, discharging process); - pressure driving (analysed for the case of mining with long face, with transverse strips as well for the case of transverse strips when mining a subsequent sublevel).

The majority of SAG and ball mill design methodologies are applied using a single design value for mill selection, such as the 80th percentile ball mill work index or SMC value. Inherent in the selection of this design value is a desire for the mill to accommodate unfavourable, but not absolute worst case, feed conditions. It has been observed in numerous “post-mortems” of unsuccessful designs and also in many optimisation studies, that the selection of the design value has been poor. Statistical analysis of testwork data sets shows that inherent variability in the data can, by itself, lead to design errors. Metallurgical testing is an attempt to measure the characteristics of millions of tonnes of ore using only a few kilograms of sample. In this paper some realistic but synthetic test work data sets are used to explore old and new methods of defining the design envelope and subsequently selecting a reliable point. The aim of the paper is to provide practitioners with tools that reveal the adequacy (or otherwise) of metallurgical test programs intended to support various levels of project design. It also provide guidance as to how it is possible to statistically justify a comparatively high design point in the absence of adequate test data.CITATION:David, D, 2015. All samples tested showed some loss of heating value for the 5-month period under all 4 storage conditions. The losses increased as the time of storage increased, with the pan-storage samples showing somewhat greater losses than those in cans. The individual daily analyses for the first 2 weeks and the analyses every other day for the third and fourth weeks of storage vary within the approximate tolerance of the test for heating value. During the first 2 months of storage the changes in heating values were not Significant for the samples from Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Colorado. The Ohio coal indicated some loss by the end of I month, which increased to a value measurable with certainty by the end of 2 months. These data show that (1) small changes may occur even to samples in closed cans and (2) the laboratory sample should be handled as expeditiously as is practical until the analysis is completed. The statement by the ASTM that "If the B.t.u. determination is an important consideration in the sale of coal, the time elapsed between sampling and analysis shall not exceed 30 days,"3/ is quite adequate for 3 of the 4 coals tested. The change in the Ohio coal stored for 30 days is merely indicated and could not be determined with certainty by the techniques normally employed. The data on free-swelling indexes determined on can samples, after 30° C. air drying, show that only the Indiana coal lost more than one unit in free-swelling index number in 120 days. No significant changes were observed with the samples from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Colorado in the 5-month period.

Bowen Basin coalmines suffer from hot and humid ambient conditions during the summer period. The ambient conditions combined with high VRTs, increasing depth of working and significant equipment heat loads results in heat issues underground. Coalmines operate under heat stress management plans as required by legislation with associated trigger action response plans (TARPs). Some mines also employ refrigeration as part of their heat management strategy.A recent case study was conducted on a mine producing about 4.5 Mt/a from their longwall and experiences summer surface ambient temperatures of about 23.5ºCwb. The expected virgin rock temperature is 46ºC at 300 m depth. The mine currently introduces a modest amount of surface cooling at the portal using ‘off-the-shelf’ air conditioning units. This system does not effectively manage face temperature primarily due to positional inefficiency.Underground conditions remain hot in summer and work is typically undertaken in accordance with the Heat TARP. This has a direct impact on the productivity of crews, worker comfort and also negatively impacts the workforce morale. The mine commissioned a study to determine a refrigeration strategy aimed at maintaining underground conditions below TARP levels 90 per cent of the time.The ventilation network model was calibrated against actual temperature data to simulate the heat loads including longwall, conveyor system, strata and auxiliary diesel fleet. This model was then used to determine the cooling requirements for bulk surface cooling, bulk underground cooling, surface district cooling and underground district cooling strategies.These estimates were used to undertake a total owning cost trade-off for the different strategies. The study concluded that a chilled air shaft has the lowest technical risk but the highest total owning cost due to shaft development needs. Introducing chilled water to an underground cooler via boreholes offered the lowest total owning cost and was therefore recommended.CITATION:van den Berg, L and Olsen, M, 2017. Deformed regions of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia, contain several major iron ore deposits where banded iron-formation (BIF) of the Dales Gorge Member was converted to martite-microplaty hematite. The genesis of these ores remains controversial, in part because no study has systematically documented how stratigraphically equivalent rocks change chemically from undeformed regions into the deposits. Profound chemical and mineralogical differences do occur between rocks in the undeformed north and mineralised south. BIF and shale can be classified into three types: BIF, altered BIF and iron ore, and black shale, altered black shale and red shale. A series of low temperature (20 to 250¦C) chemical reactions can explain the observed differences in chemistry and mineralogy. The inferred reaction paths indicate that no single process could have produced all of the altered rocks at Mt Whaleback. Recently described carbonate-rich, silica-poor rocks at Mt Tom Price (Taylor et al, 2001) suggest this alteration sequence is even more complex. Our favoured explanation for the genesis of hematite ores is one that can explain deposits at Mt Whaleback and Mt Tom Price: following regional metamorphism, hydrothermal fluids locally formed carbonate-rich, silica-poor BIF with magnetite and carbonate-rich altered black shale. Subsequent surface derived fluids oxidised this magnetite, crystallised microplaty hematite (mpl) and eventually dissolved carbonates and silicates leaving high-grade ore. Either during or sometime after mineralisation, acidic, oxygenated fluids converted altered black shale to red shale and unaltered BIF to martite-rich BIF without carbonates across the southeast of the province.

King County?s (KC) Brightwater Conveyance Project in Seattle, Washington involves the construction of approximately 21 kilometers (13 miles) of bored tunnel, in three contracts, with four TBM?s which produce large amounts of real-time digital mining data. To facilitate the management of TBM data with a single interface and assist in project Quality Assurance, KC?s Construction Manager (Jacobs Engineering) recommended the use of the software TPC (Tunneling Process Control), developed by Babendererde Engineers GmbH. The paper demonstrates how TPC was used for oversight, analysis and QA on a complex tunneling project and how contemporaneous review and management of data results in a better understanding of TBM performance than can be obtained by retrospective analysis of data.

In response to the FY2008 Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 2764; Public Law 110?161), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) issued the final Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Rule (MRR). The rule, signed by the USEPA Administrator, Lisa Jackson, on September 22, 2009, requires reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from large sources and suppliers in the United States, and is intended to collect accurate and timely emissions data to inform future policy decisions. The MRR will go into effect on January 1, 2010, and a report of the total emissions for calendar year 2010 will be due to the USEPA by March 31, 2011. Under the final MRR, suppliers of fossil fuels or industrial greenhouse gases, manufacturers of vehicles and engines, and certain facilities that emit 25,000 metric tons or more per year of GHG emissions are required to submit annual reports to the USEPA. The gases covered by the rule are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and other fluorinated gases as outlined in Table A-1 of Subpart A of the MRR, which is also provided in Appendix A of this report.

"ABSTRACTIn exothermic and endothermic catalytic reactions, control of the temperature is of utmost importance. Basic calculations are developed for determining catalyst volumes of various types of reactors that give particular temperature distributions, and the individual designs are compared.INTRODUCTIONA narrow range of permissible operating temperatures characterizes many, catalytic reactions, and yields of the desired product are reduced sharply if operating temperatures fall outside of this optimum range. In order to achieve close temperature control, reactors with internal heat exchange have been developed in which thin layers of catalyst are located between cooling surfaces.The temperature distribution for an exothermic reaction in such a thin catalyst layer is shown in figure 1. Reactive gases flow downward through the catalyst section, which is 2so wide. It is assumed that a constant amount of heat is generated per unit of bulk catalyst volume, and that this heat is entirely removed through the walls. Consequently, except for a short section at the entrance of the reactor, the heat of reaction is not available for raising the temperature of the gases. Thus, at all points equidistant from the axis, the temperature is the same throughout the entire reactor. At the middle of the gas stream, the temperature is designated as uo. Traveling radially from this point, the temperature decreases because of the removal of heat through the walls and reaches, in the vicinity of the cooling surface, the value u1. Over a relatively narrow zone of width, b, the temperature falls to the value u2 at the cooling surface. Because inadequate data are available on heat-transfer coefficients for a gas flowing through a porous bed, and also because the narrow zone, b, is probably without effect on the reaction by virtue of its low temperature, the temperature drop in this zone at the cooling wall was disregarded. The following calculations were made on the basis of the temperature drop (u0 - u1) resulting from heat conduction within the main body of the catalyst bed only."
