La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Différentes modifications ont été apportées aux dimensions et orientations des galeries, aux patrons de forage, aux techniques de sautages, au support de terrain, à la séquence de minage et aux méthodes de remblayage. The effect of microwave radiation on the processing of Palabora open pit ore has been investigated. Significant reductions in Bond work index are demonstrated for microwave treated samples. Reductions in work index were found to be sensitive to applied power level and method of application. After single stage magnetic separation tests, improvements in recovery of FeO were noted. However, these were curtailed by oxidation of the magnetite species as a result of continued heating. The effects of microwave radiation upon the recovery of copper after froth flotation were also quantified. Small initial increases in recovery of copper were note dafter microwave treatment. However, with prolonged exposure, recovery was found to decrease. Overall recovery of copper was not affected except for samples treated for extended duration. The influence of microwave treatment upon the conventional Palabora grinding circuit has been quantified with the use of USIMPAC software. The possibility of using 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol dissolved in tetrachloromethane as extractant for boron recovery is discussed. The parameters optimized for this purpose are contact time, boron concentration in the aqueous phase, extractant concentration, equilibrium pH and phase ratio. NaOH is used as stripping agent for boron recovery from the loaded organic phase. Boron extraction is found to be a slow process (equilibrium time 20 minutes) compared to boron stripping, which is reasonably fast (equilibrium time 5 min). Maximum boron extraction is possible at a broad pH range from 1.0 to 6.0. Using 1.0M extractant concentration, a 1:1 phase ratio (organic: aqueous) and two stages, ~99% boron extraction is achieved. More than 97% boron stripping is possible using 0.5M NaOH at a 1:1 (organic: aqueous) phase ratio in two stages. Overall, a 95.6% boron recovery was achieved. Loss of solvent into the aqueous phase and co-extraction of Ca, Na and K into the organic phase at higher equilibrium pH are two major concerns in his process.

Since its introduction to North America in the early 1970s, various elements of the system have been successfully installed in a variety of applic11tions both in Canada and the U.S.A. Examples are chosen from the coal, fine aggregates, iron ore and industrial minerals industries.II. Elements of the Linatex Solids Recovery System(A) The Linatex Separator (See Fig.I)The Linatex Separator, which is the heart of the system, is a specialized type of hydrocyclone designed to give a self regulating rope discharge product. It has the familiar cyclone geometry of cylindrical and conical section, tangential inlet, apex and vortex finder. The apex is enclosed in a unique patented automatic underflow regulator consisting of a collapsible rubber sleeve, and the overflow line is a siphon-leg, with a controlled air bleed valve. The siphon leg is adjusted so as to balance the internal negative pressure acting as a closing force on the underflow regulator against the mass of slurry pressing down on it from the cone section of the Separator. With correct adjustment the underflow regulator will close drip-tight on a water only feed. As solids accumulate in the apex of the cone the weight of solids counterbalances the vacuum and cat1ses the underflow regulator to open and discharge classified material at a controlled density."

The rapidly growing demand for titanium pigments has aroused new interest in actual and potential sources of supply of titanium- bearing ores , which only a comparatively few years ago were almost unmarketable . This paper , which supplements a general circular entitled " Titanium" ( Information Circular 6365 ) , represents a summary of current trade literature and Government reports , together with some hitherto unpublished material that has accumulated in the files of the Bureau of Mines . The purpose of this pamphlet is simply to indicate the commercial possibilities of the deposits , and the discussion is confined almost entirely to the three commercial ores , ilmenite , rutile , and magnetite ( titaniferous iron ore ) .

A search for the keyword nano reveals that it has not made a significant entry into the mineral processing research literature. In contrast, the terms micelle, colloid, interface, and monolayer are well established there. By considering nanoscience as colloid and interface science at the nanoscale, it is claimed that several previous and current investigations in the broad field of mineral processing fall under the umbrella of nanoscience. Several examples from hydrometallurgical processing systems (invisible gold and activated carbon in gold extraction; monolayers, reverse micelles, and microemulsions in solvent extraction; nanobiofilms and nanoparticles in biohydrometallurgy) are highlighted in support of this view.

"Particle composition distribution is an essential feature of materials processed by physical separation methods. The amenability to segregate a feed material in a concentrate and a tailings stream depends to a large extent on what is called usually the ""liberation"" of the various mineral phases that are present in an ore. In fact the energy consumed in crushing and grinding has the major justification of producing particles that are as close as possible to monominerallic. Monophasic particles are able to reveal physical differences in mineral properties that make their separation possible. For many years, various authors have insisted on the concept of liberation, without noting that, in practice, it can be a pure concept which does not lead to measurements or predictions. The present paper insists on the concept of particle composition distribution, in which the complete distribution is the information to be obtained, and not the ""liberation·· of various phases, just like for particle size distribution, the complete distribution is an objective commonly desired, and not one or two values representing the coarse or fine fraction.2. NOTATIONS-EQUATIONSFor the purpose of the paper, a particle will be characterized by its volume Vp, and its volumetric composition with respect to a mineral of interest, which will be given the notation ""O"". Hematite floatability from two low grade banded iron ores of India, namely banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) and banded hematite jasper (BHJ) using fatty acids and amine as the collectors is investigated under identical physico-chemical conditions. The results indicated that hematite present in BHQ ore is easy to float using both the collectors, compared to BHJ ore. The difference of flotability between the two banded iron ores is that quartz grains are coarser and well liberated below 100 micron size in case of BHQ compared to BHJ ore. In case of BHJ ore, fine hematite and quartz grains are intimately inter-grown and are dispersed in thick jasper bands leading to liberation problems. Besides that, dusty jasper particles coat over hematite surface in case of BHJ ore during the process of grinding, which hinders specific adsorption of collector on hematite or quartz surfaces. This is substantiated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The flotation studies have indicated that it is possible to achieve ~64% Fe with ~67% recovery from a BHQ ore using both anionic and cationic collectors from a feed containing around 38% Fe. In contrast, the hematite recovery in BHJ ore was poor. Differences in the ore characteristics that affect the flotability of hematite present in both the ores are compared. Namibia's newest mining enterprise, the Navachab Gold Mine, was officially opened by President Sam Nujomo during June 1990. The mine is a joint venture between Erongo Mining & Exploration Company Limited, Metal Mining Corporation of Canada, and Rand Mines Windhoek (Pty) Ltd. Erongo has a 70 per cent interest in the mine, while Metal Mining and Rand Mines hold 20 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. Anglo American Corporation and its associates hold two-thirds of Erongo shares and CDM (Pty) Ltd one-third. The Mine is managed by Erongo Mining & Exploration Company. The property is located some 10 km southwest of the town of Karibib and 170 km west-northwest of the Namibian capital of Windhoek (Fig. 1), the name of the Mine being taken from the farm on which the gold deposits were discovered. Navachab is an opencast operation and was brought into production in December 1989 at a cost of around R84 milion-RS,2 million under budget. The plant is designed to treat 840 kt annually at an average gold grade of 2,6 g/t. This wil produce 1900 kg of gold per year, which at today's prices will earn Namibia more than R60 million in foreign exchange.

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is the second-largest underground mine in the world today. The orebody is a world-class high-grade magnetite deposit, from which three raw ore products are extracted. We use mixed integer programming to determine a production schedule, i.e., which production blocks to mine, and when to start mining them, so as to minimize deviation from planned production quantities while adhering to the operational constraints of the mine. The resulting model contains thousands of binary variables and a commensurate number of constraints, precluding us from obtaining a schedule in a reasonable amount of time. The Late Miocene San Cristobal Ag-Zn-Pb deposit represents syngenetic and epigenetic mineralization with low- and high-sulfidation characteristics. Geology is characterized by barren dacitic ring fracture domes, mineralized resurgent rhyodacite domes, strongly altered and mineralized tuffaceous lacustrine sedimentary rocks, and an extensive crystal-lithic tuff debris apron. The ore body is hosted by intra-cauldron sedimentary rocks and breccias. Fluid inclusions suggest that silver, lead, and zinc were transported as chloride complexes and precipitated by cooling in veins from <5 wt. % NaCl eq. fluids at 170°-215° C. Silver associated with resurgent rhyodacite was transported as a chloride complex and precipitated by increased H2S activity or increased fluid pH.

At present, there is little knowledge concerning the shear strength of clays containing floating rock particles with concentrations from 0 to 30%. In practice, the effect of rock particles is typically disregarded in shear strength analysis The two primary reasons for this are: 1) a lack of agreement concerning the influence of rock particles on material strength, and 2) the expense and difficulty of testing day-rack mixtures with existing laboratory procedures. These factors have impeded the development of successful slope remediation design techniques far colluviums derived from resistant sedimentary rocks or spoil produced from surface mining. This study reviewed 3 1 technical papers which contain analysis of shear strengths for clay and sands with varying mixtures of rock particles. These technical papers, published over the last 40 years, are comprised of field case studies, laboratory evaluations, and theoretical analysis. Evaluation of this body of knowledge ha shown that the shear strength gradually increases with increasing percentages of floating particles in unsaturated clays.

This bulletin reviews the historical background of the cold-mold arc-melting technology, with specific references to the development that led to homogeneous zirconium ingots. Descriptions are given of modern production arc-furnaces for vacuum melting of troth exotic and conventional metals. Besides zirconium, specific data are given for production of chromium, thorium, and copper. The development of the skull-casting technique for titanium is detailed, and the application of the technique to such refractory metals as molybdenum and tungsten is described. Factors of operation of the apparatus and furnace design are considered.

This report, summarizing the Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and coal products for the period July 1, 1950, to July 1, 1951, is based largely on publications issued during the year. The sixteenth in an annual series, it gives footnote references to publications giving further details of the research and technologic work described, except in a few cases where research data presented herein has not been published previously. During the year, the national fuels situation was generally one of plentiful supply.3/ Mineral-fuel resources appeared adequate for several hundred years at reasonably increasing rates of supply. Coal-production capacity was in excess of demand; petroleum supplies were adequate; and natural gas use was limited only by pipeline capacity. However, it was pointed out that a world war would drastically change this situation of relative plenty, particularly with regard to supplies of petroleum and its products. Conversion to the use of coal on a large scale would be required, and improved methods of mining and of processing and using coal in solid or fluidized form or converted to liquid fuels could materially contribute to our national safety.

This report details a microcomputer-based control and monitoring network that was developed in-house by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and installed on a continuous mining machine. The network consists of microcomputers that are connected together via a single twisted-pair cable. Each microcomputer was developed to provide a particular function in the control process. Machine-mounted microcomputers, in conjunction with the appropriate sensors, provide closed-loop control of the machine, navigation, and environmental monitoring. Off-the-machine microcomputers provide remote control of the machine, sensor status, and a connection to the network so that external computers can access network data and control the continuous mining machine. Because of the network&apos;s generic structure, it can be installed on most mining machines.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of lead and zinc from 104 domestic mines and deposits. Fourteen primary lead and fifty-three primary zinc operations with in situ demonstrated resources containing 27.3 million metric tons (t) of lead and 53 million t of zinc were subsequently evaluated. Potentially 17.5 million t of lead and 2.4 million t of byproduct zinc could be recovered from 14 primary lead operations. Economic evaluations performed in constant January 1982 dollars determined a long-run total cost per pound of recoverable commodity. Including a 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), 59 pct of primary lead was potentially available at or below $0.32 per pound of lead. Potentially 40 million t of zinc and 5.6 million t of byproduct lead could be recovered from 53 primary zinc operations. Ninety percent of the recoverable zinc is potentially available from currently nonproducing mines and deposits, and a weighted average of their long-run total costs was determined at $0.98 per pound of zinc. At a breakeven (0-pct) DCFROR, these non producing operations had a weighted average long-run total cost of $0.58 per pound of zinc. Sensitivity analyses illustrated that operations that recover byproducts were most sensitive to fluctuating metal prices, producing operations were more sensitive to increased smelter treatment charges, and nonproducing operations were impacted most by the DCFROR.

In the UK, powered supports are normally salvaged from longwall faces on completion of production, for reuse on the next unit. Where a spare set of supports are held, the salvaged supports are often stored in underground roadways awaiting installation. One mine in the UK extracts a 5m section, and holds two sets of 2x950t powered supports, each weighing approx. 35t and having closed dimensions of 8m long, 2.5 high and 1.75m wide. As the first set would not be required for over 12 months, and because of space limitations below ground, it was decided that the supports would be left in situ, the district sealed, and reopened at a later date for support salvage. The paper described the decision making process, and the inertisation of the sealed district utilising nitrogen generated on the mine surface and piped to the point of use. The re-entry and re-ventilation of the district are also described. The paper then goes on to describe in more detail the discovery of a spontaneous combustion event that occurred in the waste behind the powered supports, and its treatment and control using extra nitrogen brought to the mine by tanker and introduced at strategic locations along the faceline via boreholes, leading to a successful salvage and re-sealing.

In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains analyses and related source data for 271 natural gas samples from 22 States collected during calendar year 1982. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by the mass spectrometer and chromatograph. The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available to the petroleum industry and the general public. Twenty-six publications have presented the results of 13,051 gas analyses vide prior to 1982. The first 3 bulletins (1-3)3 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960; these bulletins have been supplemented annually by information circulars (4-17, 19-24, 26) containing 7,833 analyses of samples collected since 1960.
