Success in mining demands the creative application of equipment, systems and processes to the unique needs of each mineral deposit, market and, though often overlooked, the culture of the individual business. In recent years, domestic coal mining companies have become more attentive to the contribution safety and loss control programs have on their financial results. Although most have adopted fairly conventional safety programs, some have created systems and processes tailored to their unique circumstances. While each coal mining business must consider the typical risks inherent to our industry, excellence in safety is most likely achieved when a safety program is customized to meet the needs of the individual business.

Inco acquired majority interest in the nickel laterite concessions in eastern Guatemala in 1960 and, through its subsidiary Exmibal, extensively explored the deposits until 1965 to define the site for project development on the north shore of Lake Izabal. The European Union (EU) completed a new directive 2002/44/EC1 called the Physical Agents Directive (PAD) that establishes action and limit values for hand-arm and whole body vibrations. The directive specifies that: “…workers shall not be exposed above the exposure ‘limit value’.” 1 and “…once the exposure action values … are exceeded, the employer shall establish and implement a programme of technical and/or organisational measures intended to reduce to a minimum exposure to mechanical vibration and the attendant risks…” 1 The PAD limit value is effective for new machines starting July 6, 2007 and for used machines by at least July 6, 2010. These requirements apply to the users of machines, but machine manufacturers will be challenged to provide machines and information to help the users comply with the directive. Caterpillar manufactures machines with the goal of enabling our customers to comply with all regulations dealing with health and safety. Caterpillar designs all of our machines to provide a safe, comfortable and productive work environment. This study was to determine if seat suspensions could provide a reduction in the vibration environment experienced by operators of Caterpillar mid sized (<50,000KG) Track Type Tractors Methods Seat manufacturers were asked to provide seat suspensions that provide improved isolation over and above current seat suspension. Each supplier was provided with ride profiles and was asked to demonstrate the vibration reduction on a shaker table. Two suppliers provided suspensions that were compared with the current seat suspension in a field study. Three full factorial experiments were conducted. The first experiment was to evaluate overall suspension performance for four operations. The second experiment was to determine the benefit of the adjustable vertical damper at three different levels and the third experiment was to determine the effect of the fore/aft and side/side isolators. Six operators were used for the study. Acceleration was measured at the seat base and at the operator seat pad. Both the transfer function and the ISO 2631 RMS ride values were used to determine the seat suspension’s effectiveness of isolating the operator from vibration. A structured questionnaire was used to determine the operators’ subjective assessment of the seat suspensions. Results There was significant operator-to-operator variability in the vertical direction (>35%), however there was little variability in the fore/aft and side/side direction based on seat base

The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years.Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the IIIawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out.The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45 per cent and 60 per cent (mineral matter free).Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. Coke strength indices increased with rank, and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal.Use of petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved.Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilized to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

The time-cost-risk analysis described herein was performed as part of an evaluation of the Advancing Oil Shale Mining Technology Program performed by The Aerospace Corporation. The objectives of this analysis are to assess the feasibility of the program relative&apos; to time and cost constraints, and to determine the probabilities of achieving various technological goals. A combination of standard program planning and analysis techniques were used to achieve these objectives. These included a critical path analysis, a resource allocation analysis, and a risk analysis.

Mechanization in low-stope panels situated in hard rock infers roof support by tensile bolting to allow free passage of trackless mining equipment in the production areas. This is in sharp contrast to conventional mining, where compressive roof supports?such as timber and grout packs?have traditionally been used, up to 1.5 metres from the production face. Bolting is a hazardous operation because material is dislodged from the roof during the drilling activity. Even with temporary roof support installed, small pieces of rock are dislodged by the percussive action of the drifter. Operations with the man situated directly under the drill, during the drilling activity, are hazardous. The only way to remove the hazard is to move the man away from the machine for as much as possible throughout the complete cycle Costs associated with safety cannot be quantified, but need to form part of the decision-making process. Machine selections based on purchase and running costs alone do not justify the investment cost of mechanized bolters. The equipment selection process needs to take into account the total cost of mining as well as the human safety impact and loss of production costs from having to re-bolt roofs in a production panel to prevent falls of ground. Labour costs in mechanized low-stope bolting are between one-quarter and half the labour costs of non-mechanized bolting. This paper reviews the mechanized bolting option versus handheld bolting from a mining process and cost perspective in a hard rock, low-stope room-and-pillar mining operation in the platinum and chrome industries.

Empirical and numerical methods are the two extremes of the tools available for the seismic design of subsurface excavations and underground structures. Both have their limitations: when relying on purely empirical methods directly relevant experience may be scant; site data may be insufficient to justify a comprehensive dynamic analysis. The primary purpose of this paper is to review the analytical tools available to the design engineer of subsurface excavations and underground structures. Particular attention is devoted to simplifed models that appear to be applicable in many practical cases.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 20,071-acre South Fork Wilderness Study Area (OR-005-033) and part of the 8,791-acre Sand Hollow Wilderness Study Area (OR-005-034) in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study areas are located in Crook County, OR, about 58 air miles east from Bend. The areas studied are underlain by Tertiary- and Quaternary-age volcanic and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. No mineral resources were identified in or adjacent to the study area. Except for common opal and agate occurrences along the northern boundary of the study areas, no mines, prospects, or mineralized zones occur within the study areas. Bentonite is periodically mined less than 1 mi southwest of the Sand Hollow study area boundary. Neither of the study areas has geothermal leases, but both areas are under lease for oil and gas.

Blast furnace coal injection tests conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with a consortium of 22 steel companies in 1963-1964 are described. These tests were part of a program of extensive investigation of auxiliary fuel injection in the Bureau&apos;s experimental blast furnace located at Bruceton, PA. Seventeen coal tests are described on various coals ranging from anthracite to subbituminous. Factors affecting maximum rates of injection were studied. These included coal size, coal type, and oxygen enrichment. The effect of high sulfur content coal and the means to control metal sulfur were investigated. An epilogue briefly describing the commercial experience with coal injection from 1960 to the present has been included.

We have had a long history in supporting the development of training material to ensure “safe” blasting. This has been provided as both significant technical guidance to the industry and input into the development of the new industry surface rockbreakers or shotfirers qualification in South Africa (RSA). The learning material supplied to the industry is based on both a classroom knowledge component and an assessment on the practical application of the learning by the trainee blaster on the job under the supervision of the appointed blaster. This training includes all blasting applications which can often extend beyond the “normal” mining environment of open pits, underground and quarries into civil applications such as trenches, blasting close to private buildings, public roads, pipelines, power lines, swimming pools and the removal of concrete structures and building demolitions etc.

[An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. A new, powerful model is presented that focuses on plant logistics and scheduling aspects of the smelting, converting, fire refining and casting operations at the Horne smelter. This plant complex is the largest custom copper smelter in North America. It handles a wide range of feeds and utilizes a number of proprietary continuous and batch technologies that require good scheduling in order to maximize plant capacity and efficiency. The present model was developed by Xstrata Process Support, in collaboration with the Horne smelter, and uses the Arena® software to evaluate the impact of a number of plant variables on the annual copper capacity of the plant. Model development was carried out by Xstrata Process Support, in collaboration with the Horne smelter, through the effective combination of process chemistry knowledge and detailed knowledge of the plant operation (including all material flows and transfers, as well as information such as operating on-line times, plant stoppages and also scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities). A number of case studies were then examined, including the impact of anode furnace and casting cycle times on annual copper capacity and the impact of a one-crane mode of operation in the converter aisle, which normally operates with two cranes in service. The model predictions were found to match actual plant results very well. The present modelling of plant logistics and the scheduling aspects were found to add important dimensions at the plant with regard to projections of the real-life plant capacity. As demonstrated in the present case, this type of model and application can have a significant impact on optimizing operations at a given plant. This impact is particularly important in the current market environment, where emphasis is on maximizing plant output and lowering costs. These models can help yield the easily obtained gains that are clearly desirable in these times. Xstrata Process Support has developed Arena models for other operations and is available to explore new applications for a win-win situation at other plants, including mines and concentrator operations.

The flow behavior of bubble-particle aggregates in separation tanks is important for many flotation systems, particularly for wastewater treatment. These aggregates can be considered as the dispersed phase in a continuous liquid phase of water and the flow characteristics determine the efficiency of the bubble separation process. In this work, a general methodology for the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of a bubble separation tank is described. This system is analyzed by Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. The momentum transfer from the dispersed phase to the continuous phase is quantified using the Particle-Source-In Cell (PSI-Cell) method. With CFD simulations, the effectiveness of different tank design parameters are evaluated in terms of the extent of bubble separation.

With increasing depth of coal mining in China, the number of coal and gas outbursts has been increasing for years. By means of destressing the protective seam, the gas in the protected seam is drained to reduce gas concentration in the high gassy seams, thus ultimately attaining simultaneous extraction of coal and gas. Base on the simulated material scale modeling and numerical simulation, the protective seam mining method was practiced at No. 8 coal mine in Pingdingshan city. After extracting the No. 15 seam, the overlying strata movement and the deformation of No. 9-10 protected seam were studied. The experiments showed that it was feasible to destress the protected seams with large interburden thickness. As the protective seam was being mined, the protected seam experienced dynamic movement process and the change in vertical stress in the No. 9-10 seam assumed ?W? shape. When the face had advanced 656 ft (200m) from the setup room, the No. 9-10 seam was fully destressed, resulting in easy gas drainage in the destressed zone. Recommendations on mining sequence of multiple seams mining in the Pingdingshan coal areas were made.

In creating a surface mine design, a complicated series of events may be required to meet both mining and environmental objectives. Envisioning the mine at every step of the operation can greatly assist the engineer to identify design and operational problems that might otherwise go undetected until the field operations reach the problem. Providing operations a visual progression of the mine ensures that critical designs generated by the engineer are understood and effectively communicated to operations. Providing the plan as electronic data to the surveyors and/or on-board GPS systems can ensure successful implementation of the design. This paper discusses using computer technology to generate a virtual mine plan and strategies to consider when communicating a virtual mine plan through electronic and paper formats.

A major manufacturer and user of machine tools had the need to install a screw press machine at its plant site with the following design load requirements: (1) Vertical Compression Live Load = 2000 kip (8896 kN) and Dead Load = 1000 kip (4448 kN), (2) Rotational Moment = 6600 ft-kip (8950 kN&apos;m). The screw press machine was to be located within an existing manufacturing building. The bottom of the footing base was located 15 ft (4.6 m) below existing floor slab. A geotechnical investigation of the site indicated a 17 ft (5.2 m) thick initial stratum of stiff to very stiff clay underlain by a 14 ft (4.3 m) thick stratum of loose to medium dense sand. Beneath the sand stratum was soft rock described as weathered shale. Obvious concern was raised on the possible effects of the dynamic motion of the screw press and potential resulting settlement within the loose sand stratum. This combination of large loads and dynamic motion resulted in the selection of a helical pile and tieback system to support the concrete foundation. The helical pile foundation system consisted of a group of vertical helical piles installed into the shale rock and a group of inclined helical tiebacks set into the remaining portion of the clay stratum. Four load tests were conducted on the vertical helical piles in order to establish compression load capacity. The results of these load tests as reported herein, led to the addition of a limited number of tubular steel push piles in order to meet the project required Factor of Safety on the design loads. All of the helical piles, push piles and inclined helical tiebacks were successfully installed and the screw press is now installed and operational.

Baoahan Iron and Steel Complex is situated at lower beaches of the Yangtze River. The subsoils 50~70 M below the surface is a deposite of Yangtze River delta, consisting mainly of weak silty clay and loam, with low soil bearing capacity. Consequently, to build on such a weak soil a grant iron and steel integrated works weak soil improvement at the Complex, pile foundation is the effective type. It is estimated that at the first stage of Baoshan project 60,000 piles have been driven, of which 60% are steel pipe piles and 40% reinforced concrete piles. To provide reliable basis for pile foundation design, on-site loading tests were carried out for long reinforced concrete piles 27,45 60 M in length ,with strain gauges on the chief reinforcement of pile shaft and strain rod on pile tip. Based on loading tests, the paper discusses and analyses some issues, including determination of load transfer mechanism distribution of frictional resistance. Tests show that as far as long friction piles in soft clay are concerned, regardless of the properties of pile tip&apos;s bearing stratum, loads are mainly carried by shaft frictional resistance which it is effective to determine pile capacity in terms of P ~ S relationship.

An inexpensive slow-speed data acquisition system has been adapted to digitally record multiple parameters simultaneously at intervals of 15 seconds. The system was built for use with standard soils testing equipment to automatically record load and displacement parameters at predetermined instants in time. Simultaneous readout is achieved by the use of special signal conditioner and sample-and-hold circuits which read the multiple signals simultaneously and hold them until the slow acting system can print out. Three channels of a 10-channel system have been converted and found to operate successfully during a series of direct shear tests. A unique feature of the system, which significantly reduced its cost, is the power supply units. Dummy circuits are used to maintain a constant power demand during sampling) thus eliminating the need for a costly power supply with rapid response characteristics. The entire system, having an overall accuracy of 0.25 percent, was put in operation for a cost under $2,500.
