In surface electrical exploration the high resolution earth resistivity method (HRRM) is a very effective method for detecting abandoned drift mines workings. When the abandoned mines are more than 500 ft (150 m) deep, its detection capability reduces greatly and requires more effort to implement. In Yan Quan coal mine, Shanxi province, we tried to adapt this method for underground application. Two survey lines were designed with the spacing of current and potential poles 20 m and 10 m, respectively and measuring points at 2m. The measurement radius of I line and I1 line were 140 m and 60 m, respectively, and the infinitely far pole was 1200~2000 m from the survey line. (Note the I and II lines are located on the north and south ribs of main tunnel, respectively). The survey results showed that abandoned workings were located at 25-70m, Survey Line I and at 80-1 10m, Survey line 11. Based on this finding, the longwall panel gateroads and set up entry were properly located thereby providing safe mining of the No. 15 Coal seam. Using 3D numerical modeling as a tool to predict rock behavior during mining extraction is still an uncommon practice at many underground operations. This paper will discuss how 3D numerical models were used to identify potential underground instability problems in the later stages of mining. Detailed modeling was then used to make modifications to the mine design in order to minimize the impact of the potential instability problems. This paper will also discusses how the back analysis of a previous underground collapse event at the same mine in a room and pillar area was used to identify the instability problems for a new orebody being developed deeper in the mine. A 3D numerical model was first created in the MAP3D software to determine the conditions of the pillars and the magnitude of the vertical displacement above the mining zone prior to the underground collapse. The results from the ground collapse model were then used as a threshold limit for predicting potential instabilities and developing a model for the new mining zone. sing the results from this analysis, mine management has been able to implement a much higher percentage recovery of the reserve in a new, high-grade area of the orebody while minimizing potential instabilities in the future.

This paper describes the design, construction and commissioning testing program for a laboratory facility at the School of Mining Engineering, UNSW, Australia, aimed at evaluating reinforcement tendon performance when subjected to shear loading. The project has been financially supported through the coal industry ACARP research initiative. The single failure plane design adopted in the test rig has been successful in allowing shear loading to be directly applied to fully installed (and where relevant, pre-tensioned) rock bolts. Initial results are extremely encouraging, and illustrate a significant axial component of load development as shearing takes place - particular in lower strength, softer material types. The paper also outlines future plans for use of this facility.
