Agglomeration by balling in cylindrical or shallow pan devices dates back to the early part of this century. The first sintering tests conducted by Dwight-Lloyd on nonferrous ores included a mixing step for ore, flux and fuel carried out in a deep pan device similar to the balling pans, or discs, presently in use. Further work directed mainly toward sintering of ferrous and nonferrous ores always included a preparatory step, usually referred to as mixing, agglomerating or green-balling of the ingredients. In the late forties and early fifties two methods of particle preparation prior to firing were in general use. In Europe the balling pan was used predominantly, both as a mixer and as a pelletizer. In the United States many pilot plants and semi¬commercial plants used balling drums. When the first iron ore pelletizing plants were built in this country, the most frequently used device for green-balling was the cylindrical drum. At the same time, the pan device was used both in Europe and the United States for many other materials such as fertilizer, cement, flyash, alumina and copper concentrates, as well as to mix the feed for sinter machines. The difference between these two balling devices - -the drum and the disc - has been the subject of much discussion and is well covered by several papers included in the 1962 publication "Agglomeration' issued by AIMS, based on their 1961 International Symposium held in Philadelphia. INTRODUCTION Although the mining method described in this chapter is locally designated "modified Mitchell," there are so many features which are characteristic of square sets that the designation "modified square set" would describe the method equally well. The method was developed as a result of local operating experience with various mining methods, observing operations in mines in the southwest where Mitchell stoping had been thoroughly developed, and an exhaustive study of min¬ing methods literature. Since 1941, modified Mitchell stopes have con¬tributed over 50% of the total stope production and were largely responsible for supporting production dur¬ing the war years and period of declining manpower and increasing costs. GEOLOGY The community of Gilman is situated on Battle Mountain at an elevation of 2743 m (9000 ft) in the Battle Mountain mining district, about 45 km (28 miles) by highway north of Leadville, CO. The sur¬rounding area, including the Mount of the Holy Cross and Eagle River Canyon, is noted for its beauty and recreational facilities, both summer and winter. Massive sulfide ore bodies of the limestone replace¬ment type occur as chimneys and mantas or as blankets in strata dipping 0.19 rad (11°) northeasterly. A chimney is shaped like an inverted cone with shale, quartzite, and porphyry caprocks forming its base. This relatively impervious capping apparently blocked rising ore constituents which formed the chimneys and mantas. At the apex or lower extremity of the chimneys, the ore follows small fractures and bedding planes in under¬lying quartzite. Dimensions of chimneys vary, ranging up to 61 m (200 ft) vertically and 76 m (250 ft) horizontally near capping. The manta or blanket ore bodies vary in vertical cross section from one hundred to several thousand feet. One such manta was developed from its outcrop to its chimney source approximately 610 m (2000 ft) downdip. Another manta of substantial cross section and length did not follow shale but extended updip with limestone capping from its source at a lower horizon. All chimneys, however, make up to the shale¬quartzite-porphyry capping. Chimney ore minerals are mainly pyrite and chalco¬pyrite with accessory copper and silver minerals, surrounded by, and in places overlain with, marmatite, pyrite, and galena. Manganosiderite extends into the ore. It may or may not be impregnated with sufficient marmatite and galena to be of commercial grade. Ore may be massive, coarsely crystalline, or sandy, some¬times rubbly. Generally speaking, chimney ore masses are incompetent and of variable grade. Caprock is heavy and caves readily. Manta ore minerals are mostly marmatite, pyrite, and galena associated with manganosiderite. Structural characteristics of the ore are similar to those found in chimneys and where the manta contact shale capping the ground is unusually heavy. However, the large manta with limestone capping mentioned previously consisted of a hard strong ore mass in fairly strong host rock. Commercial ore contacts are fairly regular in this manta but in others the ore waste contacts along the walls are irregular with shaly limestone pendants extend¬ing downward into the ore at capping. Dolomite sand is also quite frequently encountered along wall contacts and less frequently overhead. MINING METHODS Practically all stoping in the Gilman ore bodies has been carried on with timber and fill methods and the features which have been briefly described have dictated the choice. Although at the present time modified Mitchell and underhand square-set stopes account for the total production, considerable production has been obtained from alternate horizontal cut-and-fill stopes with Mitchell truss stopes in the pillars. This method was highly satisfactory in the hard manta ore body mentioned earlier and where ore excavations 11 m (35 ft) wide and 23 m (75 ft) long required no auxiliary timber support. Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; The Oil Shale Corporation (TOSCO); Ashland Oil Inc.; Shell Oil Company and Atlantic Richfield Company, operator of the project. The initial efforts on the Colony project began in the spring of 1965. Pilot mining and semi-works engineering programs continued, in phases, to completion in the fall of 1972 when commercialization of oil shale was deemed realistic. Since that time, Colony efforts have been directed toward evaluation of the data collected during the semi-works operation and in designing a commercial operation. In October of 1974, Colony announced: "because of economic and national energy policy uncertainties it was suspending plans to start construction of a commercial oil shale plant on private lands in northwestern Colorado, scheduled for spring of 1975."

A fully three-dimensional hydraulic fracture propagation model, based on the Displacement Discontinuity Technique, is briefly described. Using this model, it is shown that the geometry of a propagating fracture is dependent on several factors, among which the fluid pressure distribution within the fracture plays an important role. The containment of hydraulic fractures is found to be dependent on stress and toughness barriers in the formation. Containment is also observed to be more effective with a decrease of the viscosity, pressure or flow rate of the injected fluid. The three-dimensional layout of the fracture is shown to have a definite influence on the width and pressure distributions within the fracture. The examples considered indicate the need for fully three-dimensional models, as complements to the commonly used two-dimensional and pseudo-three-dimensional models.

The four most important parameters controlling the flow of as in coal are the gas content, permeability, diffusion coefficient and clear characteristics. Estimates of these and, more importantly, a good knowledge about the variations in their values over time are important for proper simulation of long-term gas production. This paper describes experimental techniques for the estimation of diffusion-coefficient and permeability values, along with their time dependency under simulated in situ conditions. It is shown that the permeability and diffusion-coefficient values are not constant, as they are usually assumed to be. There is a significant variation in their values, probably as a result of changes in the microstructures of coal associated with release and flow of gas. Finally, a technique to estimate clear parameter is presented.

A control strategy is proposed to meet the following specifications of flotation control: minimize the variations of concentrate and tails grades and recovery while limiting the amplitude of variations of the manipulated variables. The strategy consists of determining future control actions which optimize a performance criterion over a limited time horizon. The desired dynamic behaviour of the controlled flotation plant is specified using reference models. The strategy is tested on a 2-computer plant simulator working in an environment which emulates the industrial conditions.

The U.S. Geological Survey has developed mathematical-modeling techniques to assess potential impacts on the hydrologic system resulting from mining of coal and oil shale in northwestern Colorado. Potential impacts of oil-shale mining on ground-water hydrology have been simulated using a quasi-three- dimensional finite-difference model. The model has been used to simulate hypothetical mine-dewatering operations at two proposed oil-shale mines. Dissolved-solids distribution and solute transport were simulated with a three- dimensional finite-difference model that was used to evaluate the effects of flooding in hypothetical abandoned mines. The potential impacts of coal and oil-shale mining on watersheds were investigated using a digital watershed model. This deterministic physical- process model predicts responses of the hydrologic system to modifications resulting from mining in basins having snow as the major source of runoff and recharge. Potential impacts of coal development on surface-water quality were investigated using a river-quality assessment model.

The degree of injury and days lost from work due to an injury are examined for selected electrical sources, occurring in conjunction with falls of the injured miner or with selected machinery, that could have been eliminated by use of diesel equipment. Although the number of electrical source injuries that could have been prevented is small relative to the total number of injuries during the period examined, many lost-time injuries could have been precluded and thousands of days lost from work could have been avoided.

In this paper, we present a physiographic classification of gravel deposits, identify some field measures of aggregate quality, and describe sampling strategies for mapping aggregate quality in the Front Range Urban Corridor of Colorado. Gravel occurs in four types of deposits along the Front Range of Colorado: (1) piedmont alluvial fans, (2) high dissected terraces, (3) high (continuous) terraces, and (4) floodplains and low terraces. The four deposit types are the basis for definition of gravel-deposit models, which differ in geologic environment, deposit characteristics, deposit size, environmental impacts of mining, and post-mining use. Of the four types, floodplains and low-terrace deposits have been exploited most for gravel. High terraces also have been mined. Deposits of high dissected terraces and dissected alluvial fans have produced minor amounts of gravel, mostly for use as local fill. Studies to identify useful field measures of aggregate quality and to determine the appropriate scale for sampling were conducted on gravel deposits beneath the flood-plain and low terraces of the South Platte River north of Denver and the Cache la Poudre River between Ft. Collins and Greeley. Gravel deposits of the South Platte were selected for study because they represent the last major resource of gravel for aggregate in the Denver metropolitan area. The Cache la Poudre valley is the primary source of gravel aggregate for rapidly urbanizing areas around Ft. Collins and Greeley. Of all the field measures of gravel quality, the most important is particle size. Various parameters that measure particle size were investigated, but the easiest to determine, and the most useful to the aggregate industry, are measures of the proportion of coarse sizes. Particle size varies widely in gravels of the urban corridor. Gravel lithology, particularly the presence of deleterious particles such as reactive volcanic rocks and decomposed rocks, must be determined to assess aggregate quality. Studies of South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels have not revealed large proportions of deleterious lithologies. Studies of particle shape revealed only small numbers of physically weak shapes in both the South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels. Particle shape does not appear to vary from place to place in the gravels. Rounding, or the ab¬sence of angular corners, may play a role in the tendency of loose gravel to yield under load. South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels are rounded, and rounding tends to increase upstream. Before the quality of gravel in a valley can be assessed, the stratigraphy of the gravel must be known because it affects sample design. If only a single gravel layer is to be studied, only the thickness of the gravel must be known before sampling. If, however, more than one layer of gravel-distinguished by particle size, sorting, or lithology-is present, sampling must take into account the thickness and distribution of each layer. For example, three gravel layers of different particle size underlie the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte. The tributary Cache la Poudre, on the other hand, contains gravel layers that can be distinguished only locally and vary slightly in particle size. Sampling experiments were conducted on gravel bars in the South Platte River and in gravel pits on the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte and Cache la Poudre Rivers. Experimental results indicate that, even where sample error is large, regional and stratigraphic variation may be measured if it is large relative to sample error. Using vertical trench samples weighing an average of 40-90 pounds, down-stream decrease in coarse particle size was mapped for Cache la Poudre gravel, and differences among superposed gravel beds were measured for South Platte gravel.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION The object of this paper is to discuss those aspects of open pit mine design which are affected by geotechnical factors. The temptation exists for some practitioners of geotechnical engineering to believe that this relatively new engineering discipline is the ‘be all and end all of mining.’ In the opinion of the authors, this is fallacious but, as our ability to put numbers to the behaviour of rocks and soils improves, it is clear that geotechnical engineering will become an integral and important part of designing and operationg mines success- fully. Open pit mines in the context of this paper also includes open cast mines, where the 'ore" is extracted and the waste material is immediately replaced or ' backfilled in the mined portion of the pit. Open pit mines operating today move from very small tonnages a day to in excess of 400,000 tons per day. Several mines are operating and are being designed to capital expenditure for such projects in some cases exceeds five hundred million dollars and in a few cases will exceed one billion dollars. The size of this investment means that financing will have to be provided from banks or joint partnerships. This financial environment means that planning will be carefully scrutinized by experienced representatives of financial institutions or other mining companies. All too often a project has been put in jeopardy because the personal desire of one or two men to make a project proceed has caused incomplete planning or perhaps in some instances deliberately leading observers 'down the garden path.’ In our opinion the day is rapidly arriving when the quality, logic, practicability and completeness of the planning will make the difference between securing financing or not and, in the cases of existing open pit mines, of the difference between survival and closure.

In most open pit gold mines ore waste selection is based on estimates made from blasthole samples. These estimates frequently are biased. While it is true that high grades and "outliers" can induce a bias they may not be the only reason for the persistent bias seen at many mines. This paper focuses on a source of the conditional bias. In this paper it is shown that the poor blasthole sampling can cause a conditional bias in the estimates.

The field of percussion rock drilling is subdivided into two areas of application; that which takes place on the surface and that which takes place underground. Surface drills are used in quarrying, highway construction, and maintenance work; underground equipment in mining and tunneling work. Two basic principles are involved in the operation of all percussion drills. First, the principle that reciprocates the impacting piston and second, the principle that causes the drill steel and bit to rotate. The back and forth motion of the piston is accomplished by a self-acting automatic valve that admits air alternately to each end of the piston (Figure 1). Drill steel and bit rotation is imparted by an integral ratchet mechanism (Figure 2) in the so-called "rifle bar" machines (Figure 1) or by a separate pneumatic motor in "independent rotation" drills (Figure 3). While rock drills are subject to all kinds of physical and operational abuse, they are most sensitive to faulty lubrication. Proper lubrication is the single most important factor in the longevity of a percussion drill.

Performance monitoring, operational practices and ongoing collection of geologic data in open pit slopes all provide valuable information for quantifying potential steepening of subsequent slopes. Mining at the Goldstrike open pit has been ongoing since the early 1980’s, with its share of slope instabilities. In areas where slopes have remained stable, consideration has been made for potential slope steepening of final walls. With the proper available equipment, steepening of bench face angles via pre-split blasting is not an uncommon method for steepening of inter-ramp slope angles. As an alternative at Goldstrike, the commonly used Modified Ritchie Criteria for empirical catch bench width has been adjusted resulting in quantified, rock specific formulas for bench width and rock fall berm placement. The result is an inter-ramp slope angle increase of 2 degrees on a 300m high slope, without the necessary purchases and procedural changes that would be required for pre-split drilling and blasting. The result has shown significant net benefits through reduction in mined waste tons and an increase in gold reserves. Location The Goldstrike open pit is located on the Carlin Trend gold belt in northeastern Nevada USA (Figure 1). The mine has produced over 43 million ounces (1.2M kg) of gold during the past 30 years. Engineering Geology Stratigraphy Figure 2 is a stratigraphic section of the rocks in the Goldstrike open pit. Quaternary alluvium and Miocene materials typically are poorly indurated stiff soils and are not present in all locations. Bedrock units consist of siltstones, mudstones, sandstones and cherts. From top down the major units exposed in the open pit are the Vinini Formation, the Rodeo Creek Unit, and the Popovich Formation. In general, rock mass strength increases with depth.

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) continues to be a problem in the mining industry. New noise standards (Part 62) promulgated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are aimed at reducing NIHL in the mining industry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a cross-sectional survey of noise sources and worker noise exposures to address NIHL in mining. Noise surveys, including full-shift worker noise exposure and equipment noise profiling, have been completed in several surface coal mines, with an emphasis on draglines. The results of these studies are reported, their implications concerning worker NIHL are addressed, and their application to administrative and engineering controls is discussed.

Wastewater sludge is a problem for environmental control and it is necessary alternative researches for its reuse. Industries can research the association of clay and sewage sludge as a source of ceramic mass. This procedure can contribute for the industry sustainability including in its raw materials, wastes of environmental concern. This paper presents the results of sewage sludge and clays characterization being analyzed particle size distribution (sedimentation), mineralogical (X-ray diffraction), chemical composition (X-ray fluorescence), thermal analysis, density, and Atterberg proprieties (liquid and plastic limit; plasticity index) and also their applications in ceramics. Results were used to determine moisture for mass of raw material and sewage sludge and there were realized tests of fired in kiln at temperatures used in ceramic industry for bricks production. In the test pieces were analyzed the properties for application as bricks.

In 1873 Barton tines Corporation mining Garnets for Abrasives. From providing bulk Garnet Concentrate the technology has advanced to the sizing and classification of micron sized particles utilizing a Barton process. Processing of Garnet involves extensive quality control at all steps, first to insure product purity and secondly to insure the correct size range. Barton Mines produces about 30 different sizes of Garnet products to lead the world in the manufacture of technical abrasive Garnet. This paper will examine the present technology of Garnet Abrasive Manufacture and the specification to which the sizes are produced as well as some of the markets served.

Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870's with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950's when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.

If Campbell County, Wyoming were an independent nation, it would rank fifth in the world among countries with known coal reserves. Only the United States, Russia, mainland China and West Germany would have greater volumes available. Not too many years ago that statement would not have seemed important, because oil and natural gas had become our nation's principal fuels. Western coal deposits, particularly those of the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, and which underlie virtually all of Campbell County, were largely unknown. But recently, in response to the three-pronged stimulus of vanishing gas reserves, rising petroleum prices, and clean environment statutes, these vast deposits have been delineated and have become, in the minds of many, indispensable to our goal of energy independence. Not only does western coal lie in thick seams near the surface where it can be mined in huge quantities at low cost, but also it possesses another coveted attribute in this age of environmentalism: low sulfur content. At Burlington Northern we count ourselves at the forefront of those who believe this coal is essential to any hope for the government's "Project Independence." But to that belief we add another article of faith. We are convinced the economics of unit train delivery of this incredibly immense resource make it the only transportation system that can help us achieve energy self-sufficiency in this country.

Comminution of various materials can be achieved in grinding equipment by nipping, impact, attrition, or a combination of these actions. Pna mills also known as edgerunners, chasers, and mullers-are classified as a nipping machine. The essential features of this type of grinding machine are rollers or mullers that turn on a horizontal axis while rating on the bed of material in the pan. Ploughs are used to direct the unground material to the center of the pan. Grinding may be accomplished wet or dry. Aritres, Chilean mills, and Huntington mills are types of pan mills. Ring roll and ring Ml mills, another type of nipping machine, were developed for grinding smaller particles of intermediate hardness to product sizes of about 100 pm. They were designed to attempt to reduce the cost of similar size reduction in ball mills and have been widely used to pulverize coal for power-plant facilities. Impact Machines Grinding machines that can be classified as impact mills include: hammer, cage, centrifugal, vibratory, pin, and stamp mills. The distinctive feature of an impact mill is that it has a fast-moving part that transfers some of its kinetic energy to the material particles by direct contact so that internal stresses are created in the particles. The Reitz Disintegrator is an example of an impact mill. It has rigidly mounted hammers attached to a vertical shaft that rotates in close proximity to horizontally mounted screens.
