Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. Initially, ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, which are the most commonly used bolt material in the United States, were tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal-mining environment for approximately six months. This paper mainly discusses the test system, protocol and system shortcomings, and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

The bulk materials handling industry has served silently for years as the skeleton structure and often the central system of nerves and nourishment for the body of basic production industries. During the past two decades, this body has undergone substantial growth and mutation to meet the surging demands of our national economy for more and better products. The steel industry has been prominent in this phenomena and plants of the sixties are as unlike the second war vintage as our current crop of basketball players differ from their fathers. Steel has kept pace with spiralling demand by innovation which has resulted in new processes and improved designs which generally yield greater production from fewer units. The supporting industry of materials handling has likewise improved its techniques and currently has a new stronger generation of equipment to perform its necessary supporting function. It has been my fortunate experience to have been instrumental in the creative stages of several new steel mills which are currently in conceptual design or actual construction. Drawing upon exerpts from this experience, this paper will describe a basic approach to the selection and application of modern bulk materials handling systems to an entirely new steel plant. Specific details of past work are not available for publication, therefore, the plant described herein is a composite of ideas and will be the new plant of the Hypothetical Steel Corporation which will be located on the lower shores of the Great Lakes.

You have been involved with research activities in froth flotation and size reduction. What do you think the future holds for these technologies? Froth flotation and size reduction are essential processing steps common to almost all current mineral-processing operations. The most significant recent advances in both of these technologies have been in the increased size of equipment and in some alternative machine designs, such as the column cells and the high-pressure roller mills. I believe that the next major area of improvement in size reduction will be at least partially driven by an improved awareness of controlling the conditions that influence the efficiency of particle breakage. This would include factors such as water-chemistry influences, the influence of fines from classification, chemical grinding additives and better rheology control. In froth flotation, significant changes are currently taking place in the plant use of frothers. Also, there will be an increasing number of new collector chemistries for certain types of flotation, such as with oxide minerals, oxidized mineral recovery in sulfide systems and improved selectivity with certain sulfide mineral systems. You have been active in implementing new engineering technology in industry. What do you think will be the technological future of mineral processing? Being involved in the invention and industrial implementation of new technology has been one of the most positive experiences of my career. I also have had the unique experience of working in the chemical and petroleum industries as well as in mineral processing. In my opinion, the future of mineral processing will be an exciting, wonderful work area in which to be involved. The development of new technology in minerals processing offers a special challenge compared, for example, to that of chemistry or chemical engineering. In successful industrial innovation involving minerals, having a sound theory is not enough. Instead, what is required is a valid blend of a good idea, meaningful laboratory characterization and, most key, the experience necessary to adjust the plant in such a way to incorporate the idea. The complexity of engineering systems that contain solids, liquids and gases, as well as highly variable natural mineral properties, means that nothing new comes easily. In some cases, it has been difficult to explain how processes practiced in industry for decades actually work, in terms of physical and chemical fundamentals. On the other hand, when a new idea is successfully implemented, the economic and professional returns can be very rewarding. I know of no more challenging field of engineering than minerals processing. What is your view of the future of the minerals industry in general? The need for minerals, metals and coal will be with us for decades to come. In many aspects, the minerals industry became global much earlier than some of the other industrial sectors that are currently experiencing globalization. I believe that fair international competition is beneficial to the users of minerals, metals and coals and to those involved in producing such materials. The key word here for a global economy to work is "fair." So the various playing fields involved such as finance, profit return, regulation and labor should be relatively level for all the players involved. Competition is an amazing driving force for innovation. This has been true in the minerals industry during the last few decades. The mining industry is producing more at less cost per unit than ever before in our history. I anticipate that this trend will continue as long as the global political situation remains relatively stable.

The federal Office of Surface Mining (OSW) has undertaken an effort to revise many of their permanent program regulations. Numerous procedures for compliance are being rewritten to allow for greater flexibility while meeting the requirements of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. This study investigates, for certain select provisions, the cost differential between complying with the original OSM standards and the more flexible, state-specific standards being allowed in many of the revised regulations. Estimated cost savings that could be realized under a few of the revised regulations are substantial and should provide a basis for seeking revisions to the state regulatory programs.

Pressure oxidation is a hydrometallurgical oxidative pretreatment for refractory ores, such as sulfide ores. Here, simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments were carried out on a pyritic ore from the Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico. Mineral characterization, agitation leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic testing results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted at a temperature range of 40–80 °C, oxygen pressure of 87.5–200 psi, and cyanide concentration of 0.8–1.2 wt% in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. A dissolution rate of 81–86% was achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 wt% NaCN, for 1 h.

Thermodynamic calculations based on a rigorous mass balance technique have been carried out for the chalcocite-potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) system. The results of the calculations are used to: i) construct Eh-pH diagrams for KEX additions ranging from 0 to 10-4 M, ii) determine the amounts of cupric ions and copper xanthate formed at different Eh and pH values to make three-dimensional diagrams, and iii) determine the minimum KEX addition required to form CuX and CuX2.. This allows prediction of the optimum conditions for flotation and comparison of this with microflotation test data. In addition, voltammetry experiments have been conducted on chalcocite electrodes at pH 9.2 and pH 6.8 in order to gain information on the role of metastable species in flotation. On the basis of these experiments, possible reaction mechanisms are discussed and comparisons are made with what is expected on the basis of thermodynamics.

INTRODUCTION Sulphur is a mineral which accounts for 0.05% of the earth's crust and may be found either in its elemental state or as a compound. References to sulphur production and consumption are found in early antiquity and international trade of sulphur from volcanic deposits in Sicily began in the 1880's. The supply of sulphur consists of two components: the first is production, and the second is inventory. HISTORICAL SUPPLY Production World sulphur production in 1984 was approximately 53.5 million metric tons, compared to the 1970 level of 42 million metric tons. Of this 11.5 million metric tons production increase, brimstone accounted for close to 90%. Production distribution in 1984 was 62% brimstone, 21% pyrites and 17% other forms, while in 1970 it was 55%, 28% and 17%, respectively. Brimstone Production is derived either from mining operations (Frasch, underground melting and native refined) or as a by-product from hydrocarbons. World production in 1984 exceeded 33 million metric tons, up approximately 10 million metric tons from the 1970 level. This increase was uniformly distributed throughout the world as shown in Table A.

I.INTRODUCTION The B E I R-III Report (NAS-1980) introduces large increases in the estimated health effects of radon as compared with previous work (NAS-1972). It is the purpose of this paper to point out some important failures of these new BEIR-III estimates, to offer a general critique of the procedures used in obtaining them, and to offer more rational estimates. In Sec. II we use the BEIR-III model to calculate the risk to non-smokers from environmental radon, and show that it predicts more than twice the total lung cancer rate actually experienced by nonsmokers. In Sec. III we review the histological evidence which shows that no more than about 10% of the lung cancers among non-smokers can be due to radiation. In Sec. IV, we discuss alternative causes of lung cancer, which further reduces the fraction that can be caused by radiation, and in Sec. V we summarize and conclude that the BEIR-III model over-estimates the lung cancer rate in nonsmokers due to environmental radon by at least a factor of 40. In Sec. VT we review the evidence on risk of radon exposure to smokers, and conclude that it is probably not more than four times the risk to non-smokers; this means that the BEIR-III model over-estimates the risk of low level radon exposure to smokers by at least a factor of 10. In Sec. VII, we consider the reasons for the large over-estimates in the BEIR-III. Report. II. BEIR-III LUNG CANCER RATES DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL RADON AND COMPARISON WITH TOTAL LUNG CANCER RATES AMONG NON-SMOKERS The BEIR-III Report gives the following estimates of the lung cancer risk from low-level radon exposure in terms of working-level-months (WLM): age 35-49, risk = 10 x 10-6 /yr-WLM 50-64, 20 >65, 50 where ages refer to age at death. For latent periods between exposure and onset of these risks it gives age 0-14, latent period = 25 years 15-34, 15-20 years (we use 17 yr) >35, 10 years where ages refer to age at exposure. This is a clear and unambiguous model which is readily usable for deriving numerical estimates. We begin by using it to calculate lung cancer rates due to environmental radon. *This is an abridged version of a paper scheduled to appear shortly in Health Physics. The first step in this process is to estimate the environmental exposures; this was done in a recent paper (Cohen-1981) which concluded that these are about 0.22 WLM/year. In Table 1, this is used to calculate the BEIR-111 predictions for radoninduced lung cancer rates in the U.S. (Col. (5)), and by combining these with population statistics, it is shown (Col.(7)), that it predicts about 24,500 fatalities per year, almost one-third of all U.S. lung cancers. The comparison between the age-specific expected rates from Col. (5) of Table 1 and observed rates among non-smokers is shown in Table 2. The recent paper by Garfinkel (1980) presents the results of a 12 year follow-up on one million Americans in a study by the American Cancer Society. The paper by Hammond (1966) gave the results of the first four years of that study. The paper by Kahn (1966) is based on the so-called "Dorn Study" of 293,000 U.S. veterans of World War II who carry government health insurance. It represents 8 and 1/2 years of follow-up. A recent update on that study (Rogot-1980) does not give absolute lung cancer rates, but the age-standardized ratio between smokers and non-smokers has remained the same which indicates that there has probably not been an important change in the rates for either. The paper by Hammond and Horn (Ha-1958) was an early study by American Cancer Society. It is immediately evident from Table 2 that the BEIR-III estimates for lung cancer induced by environmental radon exceed the [total] lung cancer rates due to [all] causes among non-smokers by about a factor of two at every age. It is only fair to point out that this does not represent a direct discrepancy with the BEIR-III Report since the latter states that its estimates for non-smokers may be too high by a factor ranging from 1 to 6, favoring a factor intermediate between these. Comparisons can also be made with total lung cancer incidence for all ages. A paper by Hammond and Seidman (Hammond-1980) gives the rate for ages above 40 to be 177 x 10-6/year for men and 124 x 10-6/year for women, whereas the rate calculated in Table 1 from BEIR-III for ages above 40 is 309 x 10-6, a factor of two higher. For all ages, the rate among women was reported as 36 x 10-6/year (Hammond 1958) as compared with 114 x 10-6/year calculated from BEIR-III in Table 1, a discrepancy of well over a factor of two. All of the data we have presented are basically from three study groups, but in all three cases the BEIR-III estimates for lung cancer induced [by environmental radon alone] are a factor of two higher than actual [tota] lung cancer rates among non-smokers. Much has been published concerning the subject of coal preparation as related to electric power generation however it is always a most vital topic for both utilities and coal producers, It also constitutes a field of study that is never finished since new concepts and changing demands continually require altered perspectives. One graphic illustration that has been used to emphasize the rapidity with which times are changing is the fact that during World War I, a station that consumed 1000 tons per day was looked upon as a large central station, while today some single generators require 1500 tons during the same period, For further emphasis, at that time a 20,000 horsepower turbo-generator was a mighty large machine; today, a unit of this size is planned for driving the boiler water feed pump required for a single large main unit. During the past ten years alone, electric utilities have more than doubled their percentage of coal consumed as compared to the total market. They now account for approximately 40% of the United States consumption and one-third of all production including export, Conversely, approximately 70% of all U. S. steam electric generation is by coal and this percentage is expected to increase. It is further predicted that utility consumption will increase from the current 160,000,000 tons per year to between 400 and 500 million tons in 1975 which is approximately equal to todays total production

The Kaldo furnace is a type of top-blown, rotary reactor that is widely used for the production of precious metals. During the production of doré, a gas jet of compressed air is injected through a water-cooled lance to impinge upon the molten bath surface in the presence of molten metal and a slag phase. A common problem during operation is the difficulty in controlling the distance that the injection lance can penetrate through the reactor mouth without being splashed by the molten phases. Splashing may produce accretions on the lance surface as well as plugging of the nozzle at the lance tip. An additional problem may occur when the gas jet impinges upon the furnace wall and causes rapid wearing of the refractory linings. Because the conditions prevailing in the Kaldo furnace offers poor visibility to the human eye, its operation mostly relies on the empirical knowledge of plant operators and process engineers. A systematic study in a scale model of the Kaldo furnace under controlled laboratory conditions may be valuable to estimate the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance, and thus help improve the operation of an industrial reactor. From a fundamental perspective, the observation of the basic features of the flow patterns in the scale model may help elucidate the relevant phenomena governing the hydrodynamics in this type of system.

Strength evaluation programs, based on sub- jecting a number of 5-718 inch (0.15 m) diameter core samples from highly fractured or poorly consolidated rock, to triaxial compression tests, have been successfully completed. An innovative approach was required since con- ventional methods with similar materials had not produced reliable results. Drilling methods were modified, and specially designed transparent core barrels were used. Sample preparation was successfully accomplished by using speciallydesignedtools and unorthodox hand- ling methods. Initial tests were carried out on weathered oxides from an open pit copper mine. The technique was later used successfully where the test material was weak, friable coal. The procedures used offer a practical method of testing weak materials where conventional methods would not be successful.

The ability to predict the dewatering performance of an industrial hydrocyclone from a laboratory-model hydrocyclone is of great importance. In this study, laboratory-scale hydrocyclone experiments were conducted using silica sand samples at 10 percent solid concentration for dewatering with Mozley hydrocyclones with diameters of 2 in. and 4 in. The objective is to predict the design parameters for an industrial dewatering cyclone to achieve higher solid concentration in the underflow. A model was developed based on the Nageswararao hydrocyclone model with the help of a commercial simulator for a hydrocyclone operating at 100 t/h and 20 percent solid concentration to achieve 80 percent solid recovery at 45 percent solid concentration in the underflow.

The study of the apatite deposits of the Aldan Shield shows wide spread of the Precambrian apatite-carbonate ores and possibilities of using them for extraction of apatite. Dependency of flotation on ore minerals was studied according to the following scheme: preparation of the monomineralic samples of anhydrite, gypsum, chlorite, serpentine, phlogopite, apatite; mixing them in apatite ore of the average composition; followed by flotation. Another series of the experiments was conducted to ascertain a dependence of flotation activity of the different minerals on the different flotation reagents, which were used as collectors. It has been shown that apatite from silicate-carbonate ores is most extractable because it has the biggest size of grains and is the most free of inclusions. Beneficiation of the sulphate-containing apatite-carbonate rocks is possible when flotol - 7.9 is used as a collector. Meanwhile, the use of the tallaktam leads to an increase in the sulphate recovery. The estimation of individual technological features of the layered Mghydrosilicates and their influence on the process of beneficiation has been examined using samples of apatite-dolomite ore (P205-8%) with the addition of the phlogopite, serpentine and chlorite. The results show that there is little influence of the chlorite presence on the flotation while the serpentine presence leads to a decrease of the flotation, because of its high specific surface area.

Kennecott's Ray mine is located about 145 km (90 miles) north of Tucson in the Mineral Creek mining district of central Arizona. Mining in the district started in the late 1800's. The Ray mine itself was first mined by under- ground methods in 1911 and was changed to an open-pit operation in 1952. Mineralization is complex and includes sulfide, silicate, and native copper mineralization, as well as minor amounts of molybdenite. Sulfide ore, mined at Ray, is shipped by rail to Kennecott's concentrator and smelter at Hayden, 32 km (20 miies) away. Silicate ore, mostly chrysocolla, is processed near the mine in a vat leaching-electro- winning plant. The mine consists of two sulfide areas: (1) the West pit and the Central pit (the original Pearl Handle pit) and (2) a silicate area on the northeast perimeter of the Central pit. The pit now is over 304 m (1000 ft) deep and approximately 3048 m (10,000 ft) long. Roads within the ultimate pit are limited to a grade of 10%, while those outside the pit are limited to 8%. The mining equipment consists of 40 Wabco 1094 (120-st) haulage trucks [ranging from 109 to 227 t (120 to 250 st)], 12 electric shovels [ranging from 6 to 23 m (7 to 25 yd)], and 3 11-m (12-yd) Dart production loaders.

This afternoon, I would like to focus more specifically on potential cartel activity and U.S. mineral import dependence.

Canadian sylvinites contain over 90% of KCl and NaCl and a few percent of water-insoluble minerals. Cationic flotation is used to produce KCl concentrates. Since water-insoluble minerals appear in the pulp as slimes, and since long-chain primary amines are utilized as a collector, desliming is essential. The potash industry utilizes different desliming methods. This may involve selective flocculation of the slimes with polyacrylamide and removal of the flocculated product by flotation, or mechanical desliming with the use of classifying cyclones. Whichever method is applied, desliming is never complete; the flotation feed after desliming still contains about one percent of the slimes which heavily affect collector consumption and flotation selectivity. Therefore, the remaining slimes have to be rendered inactive by “blinding” them with polymers such as carboxymethyl cellulose or guar gum. The commercial blinders used by the potash industry include natural and synthetic polysaccharides. The most common is the use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and guar gum (GG). These are quite different polymers, while CMC is anionic, GG is non-ionic; while the applied CMCs are of relatively low molecular weight (about 300,000) GGs have much higher molecular weight. Guar gums are also heavily used as the depressants of naturally floatable gangue in the processing of platinum-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. (1999) quite a large variety of modified guar gums are available in South Africa for this application. Cheng et al. (2002) claim that natural guar gum’s molecular weight is 1.935 • 106. Robinson et al. (1982) found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105. The highest molecular weight sample is then very close to the natural guar gum studied by Cheng et al. (2002). According to the manufacturer, the Rantec KP4000 guar gum which is used by the Canadian potash industry has a molecular weight of about 1.5 x 106. Since both KCl and NaCl are soluble in water, the flotation process is carried out in saturated brine. At 20 oC, 1450 kg of NaCl-KCl-H2O saturated solution contains about 0.300 kg of NaCl, 0.150 kg of KCl, and 1 kg of water (Gaska et al., 1965). Thus, in the saturated NaCl-KCl brine there are about 5.1 kmole of NaCl and 2 kmole KCl per 55.5 kmole of water. This gives 3.9 molecules of water per each ion assuming complete dissociation of NaCl and KCl. Thus, it is obvious that all water molecules in the saturated brine must be bound in the hydration shells around the hydrated ions. The surface tension of the NaCl-KCl saturated brine was recently measured to be 85 mN/m (Laskowski et al., 2003).

Early studies in the carbonate leaching of uranium ores led to the investigation of pressure leaching as a method to enhance the dissolution of the metal values in this system. The initial investigations conducted at the University of British Columbia supplemented by the work done by the group at the A.E.C. Grand Junction pilot plant, all established the higher efficiency and better economics of the alkaline pressure leaching system. This work was conducted either in laboratory autoclaves using oxygen overpressures, or in pilot plant sized horizontal autoclaves with air as an oxidant. Both of these testing vehicles utilized agitation provided by relatively high speed impellers (300 to 700 rpm), which apparently enhanced the oxidation of the uranium to the hexavalent state. The installation of vertical autoclaves on a production scale, which through design considerations require relatively slow agitator speeds (68 rpm), led to the studies of the utilization efficiency of the air addition and the use of catalytic type oxidants to effect a greater usage of the oxygen added through the aeration system. In addition to investigating the effects of the chemical additives, studies were also conducted on the effect of different impeller configurations on the extraction of uranium, which in itself is a measure of oxidation efficiency. The material presented in this paper was compiled in the Ambrosia Lake district of New Mexico, and the majority of the data was obtained in the Homestake- Sapin Partners mill, located at Grants, New Mexico.

"To Sink or Not to Sink"; this play on the Bard's words sums up the considerations and problems that face the owner on every potential shaft sinking project. The growing demand for access into the earth is pressing construction into new areas and to greater depths. The following discussion will entertain some of the effects of these new and unknown aspects upon the approach to designing and sinking of deep shafts. We will also look at the current shortages of equipment, materials and skilled manpower, and their effect upon the planning and sinking of shafts. Particular emphasis will be placed upon equipment selection, and we will discuss how economics, while always a prime consideration, is now, more than ever, both an incentive and a detriment to the industry. FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS Shaft construction is assuming ever increasing importance both in mining and civil endeavors. The rapid depletion of near surface mineral reserves is requiring the mining industry to look deeper into the earth for new sources. These greater depths increase the exposure to unfavorable geological conditions; heavier ground, high water pressures, and high temperature. South African gold mines have now reached depths of 12, 000 feet, where the rock temperature is 1380 and water bursts from the fissures. In North America depths to 7, 500 feet have been sunk, but deep shafts are still generally considered to be those of

In reviewing available vacuum filtration equipment in this paper, several types of filters have been included which are probably not familiar to operators in the mining industry. However, it was felt that these units might be of interest in the event that an application should arise for the filtration of a product in the future that does not exist today. In addition, exposure of our industry to equipment used in other industries might have a tendency to be thought provoking and perhaps lead to the development of equipment and/or applications in our industry which do not necessarily exist at this time. Most innovations in filtration equipment have been confined to the improvement or design change of components and accessories, particularly reflecting the availability of materials of construction that have been developed. Recent developments in the application of horizontal belt filters have been innovative. The application of this unit as a substitute for or an adjunct to thickeners in a CO circuit can certainly be innovative and perhaps provide a basis for reduction in capital and operating costs in this area. For example, mill tails are generally pumped at the highest possible density that will adequately flow. Tailings ponds and dams with their attendant design requirements are based upon this estimated water volume. Availability of a much dryer, non-flowing filter cake opens up several new options for disposal. Considerable cost savings could result in the design and planning of disposal areas for containing dryer material. . No attempt has been made in this paper to provide a manual for the operation of all of the many types of equipment that are available. Rather, the paper tries to present an overview.

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), under sponsorship of the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research (OCR), and the American Gas Association (A. G. A. ), has been undertaking the development of one of several processes to convert coal to high-Btu gas as a means of supplementing natural gas supplies. It is anticipated that there will be a significant need for such gas in the foreseeable future in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this preferred fuel form. HISTORY The development of the HYGAS® Process is based on various studies conducted at IGT starting back as far as 1945. Initial work was directed toward production of synthesis gas with subsequent catalytic methanation. By 1964 the concept of the direct hydrogenation of coal to produce methane noncatalytically was well-founded and the chemistry was reasonably well established. Work up until this point in time was financed by the American Gas Association. In 1964 the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research joined with A. G. A. to support the program. The objective at that time was to develop the necessary know-how to enable the design of a pilot plant, a necessary step in the ultimate commercialization of the process. Work for the next three years (1964-1967) emphasized investigation of fluidized-bed technology in the hydrogasification step, where moving-bed technology had been previously employed, as well as identification of commercially available catalysts acceptable for catalytic methanation of the CO and hydrogen in the hydrogasifier effluent under operating conditions in the system. By 1967, the preliminary design of a 3 ton/hr pilot plant had been finalized, and IGT received authorization from OCR to proceed with the detailed design and construction of that facility.
