The adsorption behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions on to activated carbon has been studied. The gold loading capacity of the activated carbon used in the system and the recovery efficiency by the adsorption were examined. The parameters affecting the adsorption of gold on to activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, concentration of 'cation and anion as well as that of ammonia. It was found that the maximum gold loading on activated carbon used was about 10 kg of gold per ton of carbon. The recovery of gold by the adsorption from ammoniacal solutions was dependent upon the initial gold concentration in the solution. A recovery of 98% of gold was obtained on to the activated carbon under experimental conditions after 120 hour adsorption. It was also found that the initial adsorption rate was relatively fast compared to the whole period of the adsorption. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was measured to be 15.8 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of gold adsorption on activated carbon was controlled by pore diffusion.

Electricity is a major cause of lost-time accidents and fatalities in the mining industry. Major hazards and unsafe practices that contribute to electrical hazards are identified in this paper. Recommendations for reducing electrical accidents in surface mining are given and are directed toward the following three areas: preventing equipment contact with overhead lines, preventing maintenance related accidents, and defining system protection techniques.

The paper describes the arrangements for the casting, curing and handling at the casting yard, of the concrete segments for the lining of the UK half of the tunnel, and the plant used for the handling of these linings at the construction site. An outline of the tunnel boring machines being used is given, with particular reference to lining handling and erection, and the extensive muck disposal systems installed. A general progress update will be given to the conference.

INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface. Injection of inert gases to combat mine fires has been practiced in various parts of the world for a long time. Of late, nitrogen has become the preferred inert gas for control of mine fires and safe salvage of longwall equipment as compared to carbon dioxide or fuel gases produced from burning of fuel. In India, carbon dioxide has been used for fire fighting in a number of mines during the 1960s and 1970s. More recently inert gas produced from burning of fuel oil in surface plants has been used in controlling the atmosphere in fire areas in two mines. In yet other cases, liquid nitrogen has either been poured directly into fire areas in liquid form or injected in gaseous form to keep the fire in check. Nitrogen produced in liquid form in an oxygen plant is more costly than nitrogen produced from PSA (pressure swing adsorption) based plants. A PSA-based plant has been installed in one of the Indian mines in 1986 and more are in the offing. This paper reviews the application of various inert gases in Indian mines and discusses the likely trend of inert gas application in Indian mines in the future.

We at Colowyo would like to thank you for the opportunity to share with the Society of Mining Engineers of A.I.M.E. the progress of reclamation at Colowyo Coal Company's multiple seam open pit coal mine which is a general partnership of W.R. Grace and Co., and the Hanna Mining Co. First, a brief history of Colowyo Coal Company (Colowyo). The Colowyo operation is located approximately 28 miles southwest of Craig, Colorado, which is in the northwest corner of the state. The Colowyo operation produces coal from a Federal Coal Lease, a portion of which has experienced previous coal mining by underground methods. The underground coal mines were known as the Red Wing Mine and The Streeter Mine, and supplied coal to numerous locations in the Rocky Mountain region.

At this time in the history of engineering and construction, cost indexes give weekly evidence of the sharply rising costs of labor and materials. Paralleling the rise in construction costs are the costs of plant maintenance. Automation of the modern industrial plant has permitted a substantial reduction in the total number of employees required for plant operation. Of this reduced total, however, up to one-half of the employees may be engaged in plant maintenance. Management's decision to risk investment capital for a pro- posed plant or improvement is increasingly dependent upon the engineer's ingenuity in designing plant systems and structures which will require a minimum of materials and labor for manufacture, installation, and operation and which will be maintenance-free to a maximum degree. This paper concerns itself with the structural elements of bulk material handling systems in which the foregoing factors influenced the design to a considerable extent.

Cosmo Howley is a gold deposit in the Northern Territory of Australia. The geology is complex and the input of geological data is an important part of the grade control process. As the geology of the deposit has become better understood, grade control and mining techniques have evolved to meet the changing circumstances. Present grade control depends on the use of angled blast holes, 21/2 benches and selective mining. Data is processed on site using 2 386 PC's running Surpac software. An environmental protection programme is employed, including soil stripping and stockpiling, sulphide waste containment and water quality monitoring.

There are several potential large-volume uses for coal ash in mining-related applications that could be environmentally and economically beneficial to mining companies. Actual usage, however, may be constrained by regulations or by perceptions of coal ash and the potential uses. To identify currently allowed uses and to assess constraints to coal ash use in the eastern coal fields, questionnaires were sent to state coal mining agencies to determine their policies on coal ash utilization and to mining companies to solicit their viewpoints on coal ash utilization. Identifying and understanding the constraints will allow for the development of a coordinated and consistent approach to remove or reduce these constraints and possibly allow for increased utilization of coal ash by the mining industry. This paper summarizes the findings of our investigation.

To pelletize fine moist magnetite concentrate, a 40% water slurry must be dewatered to about 10% by filtration, before it can be agglomerated into pellets. Slurry pH, typically ranging from 8 to 11, gives the magnetite particle surface a strong negative charge and thus causes two adverse effects. First, this negative charge attracts calcium and magnesium cations, which strongly retard the effectiveness of the bentonite clay binder added during agglomeration. Second, a repulsive force created by the negative charge functions as a dispersant that reduces filtering production rates. Tests were conducted to remove these cations during filtration, by rinsing the moisture remaining in the filter cake with a small amount of water adjusted to pH 6 with HCl. Laboratory work was also conducted at Michigan Technological University (MTU) and at Cliff’s Mining Services Company (CMSC) to corroborate the plant tests. In some cases HCl caused filter bag blinding, therefore CO2was investigated to reduce pH. The CMSC lab tests showed that using carbon dioxide to reduce slurry pH from 7.6 to 7.0 improved filtering production rates by 11%. Plant-scale filtering rates were improved by 23.7% when carbon dioxide addition reduced the slurry pH from 8.6 to 6.7.

China was nota factor in the supply of fluorspar to the United States until the early 1980's when it shipped in its first package of Metallurgical lump, that not only was higher grade than the Mexican Metallurgical spar but was also about $30.00 a ton cheaper landed at Burnside. Representatives of the Mexican Fluorspar Institute and several producers made trips to see the Chinese operations supplying their once reserved market place. China, an enigma to most Westerners suddenly became the new contender, with prices that were disgustingly low or so thought the other exporters. Of course China has been mining, producing, consuming and exporting from 400,000 to 500,000 tons per year of various grades of fluorspar but until the first partloads came to the U.S., very little attention was paid to their exports by American-continent producers or consumers.

Seismic repeaters are commonly observed in natural fault zones dominated by slow aseismic motion. The corresponding seismic signal, characterized by highly similar wave forms, is usually interpreted as the repeating ruptures of locked asperities on fault planes (“patches of higher roughness”), loaded by a-seismically slipping areas (“creeping areas”) (Chen & Lapusta 2009; Bourouis & Bernard 2007). Only very few occurrences of seismic repeaters have been reported in underground mines, where these phenomena are rather unexpected since the stress state and the seismic wave propagation continuously evolve with the advancing excavation front (Kinscher et al., 2020). A recent study based on a local seismic network installed in the underground mine of Garpenberg, Sweden, has shown that seismic repeaters and multiplets represent the main part of the total released seismic energy (magnitude of seismic events: -2 < M <1, on moment magnitude scale), with some seismic families being active during several months to years. It is suggested that repeaters are linked to aseismic slip on pre-existing talc-filled fractures, induced by the excavation, and loading of asperities. These results imply that part of redistribution of stresses in the mine is due to aseismic slip, which might explain the observed distant and delayed seismicity.

This paper discusses the results of a laboratory investigation carried out to study the microscale flow characteristics of copper ores and the variation in flow behavior resulting from flow of leach solution. Fractures in 1.5 and 4 inch diameter cores were mapped by visual inspection. The cores were stressed in a triaxial stress field representative of in situ conditions. The permeability of the samples to water was then estimated. The samples were exposed to 20 g/l sulfuric acid and the experiment repeated. The Permeability of unleached samples ranges from 10-1 to 10-19 m2 and it increases as leaching progresses. The porosity variation and the rate of recovery of copper from the specimen during leaching were also studied.

This paper reviews earlier in-plant testing at the Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant at Port Cartier, Quebec, Canada. It describes the result of the more prolonged use of coke breeze during recent months and in addition, the effects of varying dolomite and coke additives upon the metallurgical properties of the pellet production have been studied. Mention is also made of some brief test work carried out to use peat moss as a carbonaceous additive to the pelletizing process and in particular the plans for future work in this respect. Earlier laboratory pot-grate test work had indicated that a production rate increase of between fifteen and twenty percent was a practical possibility, or alternatively that the plant could be run at design rating with significantly lower energy consumption. These energy reductions were of the order of ten to fifteen percent for fuel and main process fan power respectively. The physical and metallurgical pellet properties for both blast furnace and direct reduction furnace use were little affected by the production rate increases, and were actually somewhat improved when practicing maximum energy conservations. Pellet properties could be further improved by not extracting the maximum energy economy. Two phases of carefully controlled in-plant testing were run to assess the effect of energy conservation under plant conditions. These two phases of testing confirmed that an overall fuel saving of approximately fifteen percent could be realized, with a reduction in the Bunker C oil consumption of about forty-five percent, and a reduction in main process fan power of approximately ten to fifteen percent. The present scope of work is aimed at establishing the use of varying levels of coke addition up to about one percent under normal plant operating conditions.

Geomechanics and geohydrological considerations for the seal design for mine openings are presented. Design guidelines derived from laboratory and in-situ experiments are proposed. The results suggest that seal design, specifications and material selection should be site-specific. Performance requirements for a specific seal location should be identified. Evaluation of sealing effectiveness should be made on the entire seal system, i.e. seal, seal-rock interface, excavation-induced damage zone and the surrounding rock.

"The Phu Kham Cu-Au mine in Laos is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. The deposit is a complex and low grade Cu-Au porphyry ore. The rougher feed has a particle size distribution of 80% passing 110 µm, and the rougher concentrate is reground for cleaning to 80% passing 25 µm. The Cu losses in the cleaning circuit are primarily in the <12 µm fraction. A randomised paired ON-OFF test of magnetic conditioning in one of the two parallel cleaner 1 circuits was undertaken. The results showed that with magnetic conditioning there was approximately a 10% reduction in the <12 µm Cu distribution in the cleaner 1 tail to a 98% level of confidence. The Cu distribution in the <12µm fraction is a less variable measure of changes in the <12µm Cu recovery, therefore, this was used to evaluate the impact of magnetic conditioning. Subsequently, magnetic conditioning was installed in both cleaner 1 circuits and the plant results monitored after this installation. Comparing the plant results immediately before and after this installation showed that there was a 20% reduction in <12µm Cu losses to the cleaner tail. INTRODUCTION The Cu-Au, Phu Kham Mine (PKM) is located within PanAust's Phu Bia Mining Contract Area in Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital city, Vientiane. PKM is PanAust's flagship operation and the significant cash flow generated by PKM has supported PanAust’s growth, while contributing to a strong balance sheet. PKM comprises an open-pit mine and a conventional milling and flotation operation that produces and exports a Cu and precious metals concentrate. The concentrate contains around 23% Cu, 6 ppm Au and up to 35 ppm silver. Process Overview The PKM deposit consists of complex heterogeneous mineralogy horizons of Cu-Au stockwork and skarn mineralisation. It contains areas of soft-leached zones, overlying transition zones and supergene chalcocite dominant secondary Cu mineralisation and clay-rich gangue. Areas of high As and Zn also pose a challenge in treating the highly variable ore. In addition, hardness of the ore increases with deposit depth. The ROM is hauled to a primary gyratory crusher to produce a coarse ore stockpile with size distribution suitable for the 13 MW semi-autogenous mill. The SAG product feeds two parallel ball mills each equipped with a cyclone cluster producing a product particle size distribution of 80% passing 110 µm. The conventional flotation circuit consists of two parallel rougher banks. The rougher concentrates feed the regrind cyclone where the underflow is split and reports to two parallel, 3MW, M10000 IsaMills. The regrind mill discharge combines with the regrind cyclone overflow with a product particle size distribution 80% passing 25 µm and reports to the Jameson cell."

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. The U.S. Bureau of Mines inventoried and characterized mineral sites and production plants within 200 km of the border in both the U.S. and Mexico. Sources of information included the USBM Minerals Availability System, the USBM Automated Mineral Information System, the USGS Mineral Resources Data System, the Mine Safety and Health Administration Address/Employment File, and the literature. Three hundred seventy-eight major construction material and industrial mineral properties were identified and characterized in the U.S. and Mexican parts of the Borderlands. Sixty-six major metallic mineral properties were identified and characterized in the Mexican part of the Borderlands.

Coal bump, or coal burst, is one of the catastrophic disasters in underground coalmine. Among them, approximate 80% of recorded destructive burst events were occurred in mining roadway. The bump panel is often formed by hard coal seam and hard main roof; however, the cause and course of the bump events are not understood yet. This study provides a fundamental theory for the causality and progress of a coal bump event occurred in longwall roadway. Considering hard roof condition commonly existed in bump panels, we think that the abutment pressure induced by suspended roof behind the working face is the trigger of a coal bump event occurred in the roadway. Once high abutment pressure is concentrated on the hard coal seam around the working face, the roof and the coal around the working face form a seesaw-like structure, which leads the roof in front of the working face moving upwards. The movement of roof uplifting in front of the working face is a well evidenced phenomenon in practice, namely, roof rebounding, which causes unloading of the normal stress on the roof-coal interface around the roadway. A rib coal block bump mechanical model has been developed to establish the critical equilibrium equation of the coal block. Result shows that, the force source of coal bump is the horizontal ground stress perpendicular to the rib surface; and the slippage of the coal block is caused by the unloading of the normal stress acting on the roof-coal interface. Based on the causality and consequence theory of coal bump developed in the paper, several new prediction and prevention measures have been developed, including roadway design and in-tunnel reinforcing methods. The commonly used prevention measures in present have also been discussed. This paper presents a comprehensive explanation of coal bumps occurred in longwall roadways, from abutment pressure at working face forming seesaw structure to roof rebounding leading slippage of the rib coal mass into roadway, which provides a fundamental theory for coal bump causality mechanism and prediction and prevention technology.
