Introduction The Afton property is located 290 km (180 miles) by air east-northeast from Vancouver and 14 km (8.7 miles) west of Kamloops, a city of 60,000 people, in south central British Columbia, Canada. The mine is adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway at an elevation of 670 m (2198 ft) above sea level. The ore body is a porphyry copper deposit that has undergone supergene alteration. The major economic minerals in the supergene zone are native copper and chalcocite with chalcopyrite and bornite in the hypergene areas. The grade is 1% with an overall copper distribution - 70% native, 25% chalcocite, and 5% chalcopyrite with bornite and covellite. The ore also contains important but variable amounts of gold and silver. The mill was designed to treat 6350 t/d (7000 stpd). Semiautogenous grinding was selected to minimize capital cost and because of the expected high clay content of the ore, which would have caused problems in a conventional crushing and screening plant. Test work indicated that a recovery of 87% was possible in a circuit incorporating both flotation and gravity separation. Flowsheet Run-of-mine ore is crushed in a 1.06 x 1.65-m (3.5 x 5.4-ft) Allis Chalmers gyratory crusher set at 228.6 mm (9 in.), closed side setting. The surge pocket, below the crusher, is emptied by a Hydrastroke feeder onto number one conveyor, which discharges onto a 180,000-t (198,416-st) coarse ore stockpile. Six Hydrastroke feeders on two conveyors withdraw the crushed material from the bottom of the pile. These two conveyors, in turn, discharge onto the belt feeding the semiautogenous mill. The live storage in the stockpile is approximately 22,000 t (24,250 st), sufficient for three days' mill feed. Primary grinding is accomplished in an 8.5-m (28-ft) diam by 3.7-m (12-ft) long Koppers (Hardinge Cascade) mill (Fig. 1) containing a 10% ball charge and driven by a 4000-kW dc variable speed motor. The mill dis¬charge is pumped by a 10 x 12 G.I.W. pump to a 1.22 x 4.88-m (4 x 16-ft) stationary screen sloped at 20°. Screen oversize returns to the semiautogenous mill (SAM), and the undersize flows by gravity to the ball mill discharge pump box. Secondary grinding is performed in a 5-m (16.4-ft) diam by 8.84-m (29-ft) Koppers overflow ball mill driven by a 3430-kW synchronous motor through an air clutch. The mill is in closed circuit with a Krebs Cyclopac containing 10 635-mm (25-in.) cyclones and the cyclone overflow, at 35% solids and 65% to 70% -200 mesh, is flotation feed. In order to limit the buildup of native copper, circulating in the secondary grinding circuit, a portion of the underflow from the cyclones is processed in a circuit containing screens, cyclones, and shaking tables to produce a finished metallic copper concentrate. Primary mill variable speed drive The overall waste to ore ratio at Afton was 4.5:1. The mining was to be done with only three shovels, which meant that it was highly unlikely that more than one of them would be in ore at any one time. The resulting inability to blend the mill feed made it impossible to prevent wide swings in the grade and grindability. The variable speed do drive motor installed on the semiautogenous mill was selected because of the extreme variability of the Afton ore body. This variability has persisted throughout the lifetime of the mine. There are times, however, when due to ore conditions, the mill is operated at full speed (78% of critical) for extended periods of several shifts duration. There are other times when the mill speed may be changed several times in a 12-hour shift due to changing ore conditions. When ore is processed that contains a fairly large proportion of fine native copper, the primary mill speed and, consequently, the tonnage may be reduced to improve the secondary grind and to maintain an acceptable grind and recovery. High clay ores require less mill speed and more dilute grinding densities. In the latter case, the slower primary mill speed also helps to minimize damage to the mill liners. Approximately 57% of the time the mill operates between 90% and 100% of full speed or between 71% and 78% of critical. The variable speed is also used for inching during mill relines.

Boddington Gold Mine is situated 130km South-east of Perth, WA. The operation is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd. The Direct Leach plant was commissioned in mid 1986 at a rate of 3 million tonnes per annum. The plant was upgraded to 4.5 mtpa in 1988 and almost immediately to 6mtpa in 1989. Subsequent debottlenecking resulted in further increases in throughput up to 7mtpa by 1991. The SupergenelBasement Plant was constructed in 1990 and commissioned in early 1991. It was designed to process both copper-gold-silver anomalies within the laterite gold orebody and future hard rock ores. The Supergene plant incorporated control potential s­ulphidisation (CPS) and flotation ahead of CIL to remove a host of copper minerals. It operated in that configuration for 2 years at rates up to 350,000 tpa and average grades of 6.0 git gold and 1.2% copper. Gold recovery averaged 90.7% and copper recovery averaged 80.0% before the flotation circuit was decommissioned in March 1993. Quartz hosted high grade, free milling oxide and basement ores were discovered at the northern end of the orebody in 1990 and now comprise the major feed source to the basement plant. Oxide ores are currently milled at a rate of 550,000 tpa, while basement ores are milled at a 420,000 tpa rate. Metallurgical testwork during the feasibility stages indicated that up to 30% of gold in plant feed could be recovered by gravity separation methods. It was also highlighted that signifi­cant improvements in overall plant recovery and reduced operating costs would be achieved by maximising gravity gold recovery ahead of cyanidation. To achieve this, rec;iesign and upgrade of the gravity circuit was necessary.

During the last 15 years, the North American Mining Industry has experienced increasing usage of cast high chromium white iron grinding media in wet grinding applications. First introduced into the cement industry (klinker grinding) where wear rate reductions of four or five times have been realized compared to steel balls, this same grinding media serve the iron, copper, and phosphate markets by resisting not only impacts and abrasion, but also corrosion which occurs in wet grinding. In these markets, single mills containing 250,000 kg of grinding balls are not un-common and hence the economic potential with respect to lower wear rates can be significant. Add to reduced wear rate the increased production efficiency that is possible and it is readily understood why much of the mining industry uses cast high chromium grinding media. Metallurgically, the alloys used consist of a martensitic matrix containing hard M7C3 eutectic carbides. Carbon (2.0 to 3.5%) and chromium (12 to 277.) are characteristically used to arrive at the desired properties.

"Name your poison," wrote Forbes, Jan. 3, 1983, in an article describing the plight of much of the mineral industry as it entered the new year. "To ask which (mining) segment is better these days is almost like asking which of several stones would make a better life preserver." "The scene has seldom seemed darker or apparently less promising," said the Mining Journal in June 1982. And the Northern Miner described the year as the third in a "3-year drought which has completely dried up (company) coffers." Thus, 1982 became the worst year for much of the mining industry since the Great Depression. Low prices, commodity surpluses, output reductions, layoffs, temporary and permanent closures, and financial losses made headlines as the general recession continued to hurl blows at an industry facing strong foreign competition, increased government regulations, and plummeting market demand. At fault were tight US monetary policies and the resulting high interest rates that, while forcing inflation to slow, also threw the economic wheels of the country into reverse gear. Automobile production, housing starts, consumer durable sales, and capital spending all fell dramatically. US industrial production fell about 8.5% in 1982, with the GNP dropping by 1.7%. Production Value Not a single mineral escaped this recession. According to the US Bureau of Mines, US nonfuel production value dropped for all but four out of 21 metals and 14 out of 44 nonmetals. Production quantities increased for only gold, lead, and zirconium among metals and for only six nonmetals. Total nonfuel mineral production value dropped a whopping 21% from 1981 levels, the largest decline since 1938 and the first since 1971. Production value was estimated at $20 billion. Metal commodities showed heavier losses than nonmetals-37% vs. 12%-because of their link to depressed automobile and construction industries. Prices From peaks in early 1980, prices of precious and base metals, ferrous and nonferrous metals, and virtually every mineral dropped to 30-month lows in June 1982. Gold dropped to $9.64/g ($300/oz) compared to a high of $27/g ($850/ oz). Silver was quoted below 164/g ($5/oz) versus a $1.61/g ($50/oz) high. Copper was offered at a five-year low of $1.22/kg (55.5¢/lb) compared with a high of $3.30/kg ($1.50/lb). Lead went for 53¢/kg (24¢/lb) versus $1.21 (554). Nickel begged for buyers at $4.19/kg ($1.90/lb) compared to a high price of $7.72/kg ($3.50/lb). Molybdenum was available at or below $8.82/kg ($4/lb), down from a high of $44/kg ($20/lb). Cobalt went for $11/kg ($5/lb) versus $55/kg ($25/lb). Adjusted for inflation, increased currency costs, and currency devaluation, many of these prices are the lowest reached in decades. Financial Profits & Losses Low prices severely impacted companies' earnings, turning profits into sometimes disastrous or fatal losses. Highly stressed rock in stopes continues to be a primary safety risk for miners in underground mines because it can result in failures of ground that lead to both injuries and death. Spokane Research Laboratory personnel investigated electromagnetic (EM) emissions in a deep under-ground mine in an effort to determine if these emissions could be used as indicators of impending catastrophic ground failure. Results suggest that (1) there is no increase in the number of EM emissions prior to recorded seismic activity, (2) some EM signals are generated during blasting, (3) interference from mine electrical sources mask seismic-generated EM signals, (4) EM emissions do not give enough warning (compared to seismic monitoring) to permit miners to leave a stope, (5) the distance an EM signal can travel in the rock is between 17.7 and 39.6 m (58 and 130 ft), and (6) current data acquisition systems do not differentiate between EM signals generated from seismic activity and random mine electrical noise. These results preclude monitoring EM emissions as precursors of impending catastrophic ground failure.

Extensive soil conditioning was required to allow Earth Pressure Balance(EPB) tunneling on the South Bay Ocean Outfall tunnel project in San Diego, California, near the Mexican border. This tunnel extends 19,000 feet out under the Pacific Ocean and was mined through soil formations including silts, sands, gravels, cobbles, and boulders. EPB pressures ranged from 3.0 to 7.0 bar, with the maximum pressures required when mining through the highly permeable granular formations.

Since the establishment of the standard dust concentration of 2 mg/m3, a strong effort has been made by mining engineers and researchers to provide better dust control equipment and procedures for underground coal mines. Particular areas of success have been control of dust generation by better coal-cutting strategy, better design of water sprays for dust suppression and air movement, use of scrubbers, and improved design of face ventilation systems. A drastic improvement occurred over time such that the average dust concentrations for continuous miner operators dropped from 6.5 mg/m3 in 1968 to 1.3 mg/m3 in 1980 and for auger, cutter, longwall, and roof bolter occupations from 2.7 mg/m3 in 1973 to 1.6 mg/m3 in 1980 (Niewiadomsky, 1983).

"Testing was conducted to determine the ability of foam to maintain roof coverage in a simulated longwall mining environment. Approximately 27% of the respirable coal mine dust can be attributed to longwall shield movement. Developing controls for this dust source has been difficult. The application of foam is a possible dust control method for this source. Laboratory testing of two foam agents was conducted to determine their ability of foam to adhere to a simulated longwall face roof surface. Two different foam generation methods were used; compressed air (CA) and blower air (BA). Using a new imaging technology, image processing and analysis utilizing ImageJ software produced quantifiable results of foam roof coverage. For CA foam in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation at 3 minutes after application, 98% of agent A was intact, while 95% of agent B was intact on the roof. At 30 minutes after application 94% of agent A was intact while only 20% of agent B remained. For BA in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation, the results were dependent upon nozzle type. Three different nozzles were tested. At 30 minutes after application 74-92% of foam agent A remained, while 3-50% of foam agent B remained. CA foam seems to remain intact for longer durations and is easier to apply than BA foam. However, more water drained from the foam when using CA foam which demonstrates that BA foam retains more water at the roof surface. Agent A seemed to be the better performer as far as roof application is concerned. This testing demonstrates that roof application of foam is feasible and is able withstand a typical face ventilation velocity, establishing this technique’s potential for longwall shield dust control. INTRODUCTION NIOSH personnel have visited many longwall operations at various geographical locations in the U.S., conducting benchmark surveys to characterize current operating practices and dust control measures in use. Sources of respirable dust generated from the longwall face have been identified as: intake (10%), stage loader (20%), shields (27%), and shearer (43%) [1]. Dust generated from the shearer, armored face conveyor, and the stage loader can mainly be controlled by water sprays and increases in ventilation air quantities, however, research has demonstrated limited effective controls for dusts generated by shield movements [2]. One possible approach to mitigating shield dust generation is to apply a layer of water or foam to the shield-roof interface. Once this interface is blanketed with foam or water, dust will be less likely to become airborne and contaminate the airways over the personnel walkways. Though water is an abundant and common dust control measure, roof applications have limited success because water is unable to remain in-place in adequate quantities for the necessary duration between application and shield advance. Past and current testing of foam for material properties has shown that it has longer applicability times, ranging from 10 to 60 minutes [3] and has shown better performance for dust control, ranging from 19-96% improved efficiency over water [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. The majority of this foam dust control research has focused on dust control efficiency at the longwall shearer or continuous miner cutting drum."

The intelligent selection of wire cloth and perforated plate for screening surfaces seems a rather confusing subject to the newcomer in aggregate processing. The proper application of various screening surfaces is a complicated one and one could consider himself an expert only after many years of working with all applications. However, part of the subject matter could be simplified considerably for, the average screen user. In this paper an attempt will be made to do this, by presenting some comparative specification data along with cost figures Unfortunately, it is impossible in the limited scope of this paper to give actual service comparison records between different cloths or cloth and plate. Anyone who has considered making actual service comparisons for competing screening media is well aware of the almost insurmountable problems Their solution would form the basis for a separate paper on that subject alone. Therefore, this paper will be limited to comparative data up to the point of installation.

In the Spring of 1959 the Riverside Cement Company, a Division of American Cement Corporation, placed into operation at their Oro Grande California plant a new crushing-blending-reclaiming facility. This new facility, in conjunction with other modernization in the plant, has established a degree of automation and reliability on a-plant-wide basis which heretofore had not been attained in the industry. The blending and reclaiming facilities for raw stone and cement clinker at this plant represent not only the first computer programmed materials handling system of its type in the industry, but also the first installation of specialized equipment which was designed for high capacity, fully automated operations.

The evaluation and development of the Eastern North Carolina phosphate deposit resulted in one of the world's largest and most modern phosphate mines and fertilizer complexes at an investment in excess of $90,000,000. The resulting ore beneficiation process showed excellent correlation with pilot plant data. A number of variations from current industrial practices were introduced and projected from bench scale tests through pilot plant to production. Principal among these variations were the following: 1) removal of magnesium by classification, 2) simultaneous flotation of coarse and fine phosphate, 3) the use of saponified fatty acid, 4) utilization of filter wash water for deoiling, 5) utilization of a rougher concentrate for acidulation, 6) calcination of flotation concentrates, and 7) elimination of grinding prior to the manufacture of phosphoric acid.

The personal dust monitor (PDM) is a combined tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) respirable dust monitor and cap lamp, configured to have dimensions and weight similar to those of a lead-acid miner’s cap lamp battery. The Higgins-Dewell (HD) cyclone design operated at 2.2 L min-1 airflow has previously been reported to have low bias relative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) convention. Previous reports have described the PDM as meeting the NIOSH Accuracy Criterion. In order to avoid certain analysis anomalies encountered during these evaluations, a different method of establishing the PDM relative standard deviation was employed. Re-analysis of laboratory data for both the early prototype and precommercial PDMs indicates that the PDM still meets the NIOSH accuracy criterion, and that the precommercial PDMs are more accurate than previously reported.

During the ten year span from 1978 to 1987, the number of fires which occurred in under-ground coal mines doubled from the previous ten years. Anyone involved with underground coal mines is well aware of the associated tragedy that can result from these fires, both to personnel and to property. Every day mine management and mining personnel face this threat of a possible mine disaster or fire. Their ability to deal with such a situation safely and effectively depends on the level of emergency preparation developed and maintained. As a direct result of the ever-increasing interest in the Mine Emergency Preparedness Program and the Mine Fire Training Programs currently being conducted, the Emergency Preparedness Center was created. As a branch of the Mining Extension Service at West Virginia University, the Center provides preparedness training at several different levels on a varying range of topics. Classes are conducted at a new especially-designed training laboratory at the National Mine Safety & Health Academy in West Virginia. By maintaining the proper equipment and levels of training allowing for immediate response, the personnel who are part of the Center believe that the impact of a mine fire or other such emergency situation can be minimized. This paper will present recommendations for maintaining an efficient mine emergency preparedness program and will provide information regarding the Mine Fire Training Program as conducted by the Emergency Preparedness Center and describe the advantages of the newly constructed training facility.

Potential cement raw materials are widely distributed but deposit size, quality, transport, market and environmental considerations are important in determining economic value. Major production locations are in a variety of geological environments ranging from Lower Paleozoic crystalline limestones to Tertiary and Recent polyzoal limestones and limesands, both onshore and offshore. Raw material transportation is by road, rail, sea, aerial ropeway and pipeline; road/rail transportation of the finished product is traditional but movement by sea of clinker and cement is increasingly a feature of the industry.

This work presents experimental results for the recovery of gold present in alkaline cyanide solutions by using the electroelution technique of strong-base anionic polymeric resins IRA 402-CL from Rhom and Haas-Brazil Ltd. loaded with gold. This technique of electroelution of anionic polymeric resins is based on the removal of metal ions adsorbed to the resin, resulting from a potential difference applied between the cathode and anode in an electrolytic cell. The electrolytic cell was composed of an aqueous solution with suitable chemical characteristics and an anionic polymeric resin bed loaded with gold. The resin used in the experiments was loaded using synthetic alkaline gold cyanide solution with 1.0 g/L of gold. The variables studied were electroelution time, cathode current density, distance between cathode and anode and the electrolyte chemical composition. Statistical methods made it possible to establish the optimum conditions that would achieve satisfactory gold recoveries by the electroelution technique. The statistically predicted response for the resin loaded with gold by percolation was 16.5% gold recovery, 2.0 A/m2 cathode current density, 20-mm distance between electrodes and 6.0 hrs electroelution time. For the centrifuging system, the statistically predicted response was 7.41% gold recovery under the following conditions: 0.25 A/m2 cathode current density, 1-mm distance between electrodes, 3.5 hrs electroelution time and 10.9% NaOH in the electrolyte chemical composition.

INTRODUCTION The inactive uranium mill tailings investigated in this study are located in two mining districts, Elliot Lake and Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. The sites exhibit a mixture of surface features consisting of dry areas, with or without vegetation and areas covered with water. On the edges of the water bodies, indigenous vegetation has invaded the tailings beaches [ Typha] spp. (Tourn.) L. a dominant plant on these tailings beaches, has been studied for the uptake of radium-226 and lead-210 (Kalin and Sharma, 1981b) from the tailings. It was found that most of the radium-226 remains in the roots of the plants, and that the solubility of radium-226 in control soil differs from that in tailings. The uptake of radium226 by vegetation and other biota is related to the solubility of the element in water. Factors controlling the solubility of radium-226 in uranium mill tailings are of interest in assessing the environments effects of these wastes. Rusanova (1962) found that the soluble or extractable amount of radium from the soil is inversely related to the total concentration of calcium and magnesium in the soil. Experimental work has clarified some aspects of the leachability of radium from uranium mill tailings (Levins, et al., 1978; Wiles, 1978, and others). Halvik, et al., (1967) studied the effects of pH and chemical composition of surface water on the liberation of radium from uranium mill tailings and uranium ore. He found that an increase in pH, up to a value of pH 9, decreases the amount of radium released from the tailings and the ore. A positive effect of calcium chloride was noted on the leachability of radium. Benes (1981) reviewed the physicochemical forms of radium and its migration in water. Based on experimental work, he identifies primary factors which determine leaching of radium from uranium mill tailings. The ratio of the volume of the leaching solution to the weight of the leached sample; the composition of the leached solids and the leaching solution, and finally the pH of the leaching mixture are of importance. He emphasized that a scarcity of field data exists, which would relate experimental work to the actual situation in the tailings ponds. Inactive tailings ponds in Ontario are 16 to 23 years old, and processes which are of importance in evaluating the long term effects of uranium mill tailings in the environment can be studied. The objective of this work was to investigate the leachability of radium-226 from the tailings under field conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sample Collection A description of inactive tailings sites in Ontario, where the tailings and the water for this study were collected, can be found in a report by Kalin (1981). [Typha] spp. specimens were excavated from 16 different locations along with the tailings attached to the roots of the plants. A tailings sample from the surface area, around the plant, was secured before the excavation. Tailings samples were also collected from dry areas free of vegetation in the vicinity of the wetland stand. Surface samples (depth 0-5 cm) and samples at a depth of 20-25 cm were secured. Water was collected from the shallow tailings beaches around the vegetation stands. Sample Preparation The roots of the plants were washed free of tailings with distilled water. The resulting thick slurry of tailings was allowed to settle in the wash basin for five minutes and the supernatant water was decanted. The remaining saturated tailings were brought to 400 ml volume with distilled water in a beaker. The slurry was mixed with a magnetic stirrer for two 24-hour periods. After the first 24-hours, the slurry was allowed to settle for 20 minutes and the supernatant water was removed. The remaining sediments were suspended again in distilled water (400 ml total mixture) and leached for a second 24hour period. The tailings slurries from the different locations had a solid to liquid ratio, which ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 grams of dry tailings material per millilitre. The variations in the ratios are the result of differing fractions of coarse and fine tailings on the sites. In the final leachates, the solid to liquid ratios of the samples were 0.17 (±0.1) g/ml. The pH of the surface water and the leachate was determined with an I.L. Portomatic pH meter. All the tailings samples were homogenized in a mortar and brought to dryness at 75 to 85°C. In recent years, we have witnessed many innovations in the equipment used in handling bulk materials. Not too long ago, any sizeable stockpile of coal or iron ore was attended by one or more material handling bridges. More recently, large stockpiles have been built with mobile equipment of' the earth moving type with bulldozers and front end Loaders being utilized in reclaiming operations. The most recent stocking and reclaiming device is the rotary bucket wheel machine. The early bucket wheel machines built in the United States were developed for the strip mining of coal. We understand that the first American machine was built in the Midwest in 1944. This type of unit was developed in an effort to reduce the cost of removing overburden and to provide satisfactory spoil disposal. As the available coal reserves under shallow cover were exhausted, the cost of removing the deeper overburden with conventional equipment became too great for these operations to continue profitably. The first machine has now been followed by six or seven additional units, the largest of which can handle material at a rate of more than 7000 cubic yards per hour.

Short Mountain Silica mines the Clinch Formation, an orthoquartzite, for silica sand. The operation is located near Mooresburg, TN, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Knoxville. Short Mountain is a local geographic name given to an area of resistant sandstone (Fig. 1). The area is part of the Clinch Mountain system that extends from eastern Tennessee to southwestern Virginia. The thick sandstone unit is more technically called a quartz arenite (orthoquartzite) that forms most of the mountain. In 1980, a Knoxville resident brought the Clinch Formation - Short Mountain in particular - to the attention of the large silica-sand producers as a potential silica-sand mine. Working with a local contractor who owned several hundred acres on Short Mountain, the Knoxville resident contacted interested companies. Many silica companies reviewed the property including Ottawa Silica Co., Pennsylvania Glass Sand Co. (both now US Silica Co.),Unimin Corp.,The Morie Co. and others. AFG Industries was the main market for the glass sand product from this potential mine. It had two plants, both within trucking distance from the site. All the silica sand producing companies, however, declined to develop the site. A few years later, Unimin Corp. decided to drill and evaluate the deposit. From that evaluation, Unimin leased the property but later dropped it. The relatively limited market for the Short Mountain product as well as Unimin’s recent acquisition of Carolina Silica were reportedly instrumental in the company’s decision to let go of the lease. Several other companies-unrelated to the silica sand industry - looked at the site but no one was interested in developing it. In 1986, J.D. Nicewonder, owner of coal mines in Virginia and Kentucky, was approached to investigate the site. Nicewonder began to develop the site with the intent to produce glass sand to supply AFG Industries. In May 1988, the first shipment of sand was trucked to AFG Industries.

Although gold's market price dropped considerably from 1980's all time high, exploration for the precious metal remained a particularly bright spot last year, especially in the western US. For example, in Nevada-the nation's largest gold producer-further exploratory drilling at Louisiana Land & Explorations Co.'s deposit at Round Mountain and Newmont Mining Corp.'s find near Carlin resulted in sharp boosts in estimated reserves at both sites. Louisiana Land said its deposit is well on the way to being one of the largest gold reserves in the US. Based on further drilling, Newmont said its Gold Quarry property near Carlin could now produce 4.7-6.2 t/a (150,000-200,000 oz/ year). Reserves at Newmont's two properties near Carlin and a third property in southeast California are reportedly at least 218 t (7 million oz), up from the previously announced 128 t (4.1 million oz). Gold exploration activities were brisk in many other states, including a noticeable effort to explore and reopen dormant properties. Although the return on investments didn't appear as favorable last year as they did in 1980, the gold price was apparently sufficient to spur healthy exploration activity. Outside precious metals, market conditions, and subsequent exploration activity, appeared much more bleak. In the molybdenum market, for example, prices continued to slide, and Amax Inc. tightened its exploration budget. (Amax supplies 60% of the domestic market and 45% of the world demand for molybdenum.) The company spent 16% less on exploration during the first six months in 1981, compared to the same period in 1980. Copper and many other base metal producers appeared in similar straits throughout the year. Uranium exploration activities continued to suffer last year also due to depressed market conditions. Among others, Gulf Minerals Resources and Amoco Minerals Co. suspended uranium exploration activities in the West. Despite current unfavorable conditions, some companies continue uranium searches, confident that market conditions will rebound. On a brighter note, interest in exploring for some industrial and strategic minerals appeared on the upswing last year. Minerals used for oil and gas drilling, such as barite and special sands, were especially noteworthy. In geophysical activity, significant developments were achieved for electromagnetic techniques in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Geophysical logging activity declined due to decreased uranium exploration, and computer hardware continued to impact the way mining geophysical data are being acquired. Many presentations and papers were given last year to help exploration geochemists develop new techniques to locate concealed ore bodies. Among techniques described were statistical and computer modeling for enhancing anomalies over blind deposits.
