Flotation of minerals is governed by many processes at the solid/liquid/gas interface, such as adsorption and precipitation of surfactants. In this paper, the basic principles governing these processes and hence flotation are discussed. Also, recent techniques such as fluorescence and ESR spectroscopy which have been used to study in situ surfactant adsorption and to obtain information on the structure of adsorbed layer are discussed.

Subsurface density changes can be detected by very precise surface gravity measurements. A feasibility study, combined with field experience using modern instruments, will indicate the probability of success. In addition to projected anomaly parameters, surface conditions that effect the survey precision must be evaluated. Examples with excavated zones at 9 m (30 ft) of depth and [+] 22 microgal error are compared to the same model at 30 m (98 ft) of depth. The figures illustrate anomaly detectability. The survey error is a function of surface topography and lateral density variation in the very near surface.

Spreadsheet software is used to convert test results for drill core samples into borehole statistics such as volumes and masses of in-situ ore, metal contents and variances of metal contents. The properties of variances and the sampling variogram play a pivotal role, The additive of property of variances gives a sound scientific basis to the calculation of confidence limits for metal contents and grades as a measure of the risks associated with estimating reserves and resources.

Based on the classical definition of optimization, flotation plants of today are far from being perfect, effective, or functional as possible. Though considerable efforts have been expanded in the optimization endeavor during the last decade, much more needs to be done in the future to optimize our flotation plants and operations. The major problem in designing an optimum flotation circuit is that the flotation process depends on the interaction of several physical and chemical parameters. In the past, there has been a tendency to only consider the effects of chemical factors such as flotation reagents: collectors, frothers, conditioning reagents, pH, etc. On the physical side, the emphasis has been limited to the liberation characteristics, grinding time, percent, solids in the pulp and flotation time. Its only recently that we are employing particle size analyses, on-stream analysis, oxidation reduction potential and the like, as operating controls. The design, operation and control of a mineral processing plant depends on costs incurred at all stages, from inception (testing for flowsheet development) through plant closure and beyond. To ensure that micro- and macro- engineering technology is transferred to operational levels, the academia, testing engineers, designers, operators, consultants and management must all get involved in the transformation process. Historically, in the 1950’s engineering empiricism was strengthened through micro-engineering based on fundamental and mechanism. Unique scientific apparatus such as zeta meter and infrasizer were used to test new hypotheses. With the advent of computers in the 60s and 70s, complex differential equations were solved to study and understand unit processes and to assess mechanism assumptions. Such efforts contributed to improved understanding of the unit operations such as comminution, flotation, thickening, filtration and the like. In the 80s and 90s with the availability of more sophisticated computer technology involving modeling procedures, advanced numerical methods, image analysis, nonlinear-curve-fitting and data adjustments, it was possible to test newly developed models under the production environments. These innovations are now available to develop simulator and sensors (such as particle size analyses) for macro-engineering purposes including plant design, automatic controls and optimization. Accordingly, it behooves the mining companies and plant operators to take advantage of these new developments to control a large number of physical and chemical parameters involved in the plant operation and optimization. This is especially important in light of declining head grades and increasing operating costs in the U.S. minerals industry if it wishes to maintain a competitive edge in the international marketplace. In regard to the future R & D activities in the field, in order to arrive at useful correlations in micro- engineering research, it is essential to consider a plant operation as an interactive engineering system representing the combined effects of physics and chemistry, equipment and operation. Great Salt Lake Minerals (GSLM) uses flotation to utilize low grade harvest evaporites in the leaching/ crystallization process. A final potash product coloration problems was encountered that was attributed to AERO• 801s promoter - magnesium ion precipitation in flotation which carried into the dissolution/crystallization circuit. Bench studies resulted in changing 801s to 845 which provided acceptable product brightnesses and higher flotation potassium recoveries. This is a case history reviewing the unique GSLM processing scheme, the bench and plant work identifying the potash quality problem, the bench work and solution, and subsequent process study and circuit optimization efforts.

Solid-bowl (decanter) centrifuges are used extensively to dewater slurries in a wide range of industries. However, the application of decanters as classification devices is not as common. In this study, the performance of a continuous, pilot-scale, solid-bowl centrifuge was evaluated when classifying an ultrafine coal slurry containing nearly 60% material less than 10 µm. The test conditions included centrifuge howl and scroll speeds, volumetric feed rate, solids concentration and pond depth. Centrifuge performance was evaluated using size selectivity curves and the corresponding performance parameters, along with product yields and solids concentrations.

For a number of years in office bull sessions, I have not so jokingly discussed the engineering or management fiasco of the year or decade. Usually, governmental projects are in the vanguard, such as tanks that won't tank, or heavy water plants that don't produce heavy water, etc., etc., all to the flutter of the taxpayers' hundreds of millions, or billions of dollars. The mining industry has also brought forth a share of this type of fiasco. Ordinarily, due to lack of funds, not opportunity, the stockholders only stand losses of a few tens of millions. Little knowledge of these major errors gets to the outside world, for the ordinary stockholder is usually not very alert, and managements are extraordinarily adept at discreet midnight internments in the fine print of the footnotes of annual reports.

With new lightweight designs, spirals have become standard equipment in coal preparation plants worldwide. To their credit, spirals typically show very low coal losses to the refuse stream under most operating conditions. However, spirals do tend to separate at cut points in excess of 1.80 S.G. Attempts to obtain lower cut points have typically resulted in coal losses to middlings. Middlings retreatment with secondary spirals is therefore becoming common place. Other forms of retreatment with water-only cyclones, hydrosizers and recirculation have been attempted with some success. This paper reports on a novel (patent applied for) approach to retreating spiral middlings in a heavymedia cyclone circuit.

Selective flocculation studies of Agbaja iron ore with starch-type and nonionic polyacrylamide-type flocculants has been conducted to determine the effect of flocculant type. The results indicate that corn starch was slightly better than cassava starch in selectivity performance. Cassava starch was in turn better than Superfloc 16, while the poorest results were obtained with commercial starch. Sodium humate shows better dispersive capability, and thus enhanced flocculation results, than sodium silicate. Pulp pH affects the zeta potential, polymer chain configuration and hence selective flocculation. Overall results indicate that recovery and separation of this very fine grained iron oxide by selective flocculation is feasible.

The implementation of NAFTA in January 1994 was expected to have small but beneficial effects on the Mexican economy, mostly through increased investments. Mexico's mining industry was especially likely to benefit, as mineral investment funds would be diverted to the now safer Mexico and away from similarly endowed but more risky Latin American mineral economies. The results during the past two years have shown that it is government and macroeconomic factors that influence investment flows, rather than the fine tuning of trade flows through so called “free-trade" agreements.

A brief overview of industrial mineral exploration and exploitation in Chile is given. World class deposits of salt, lithium, nitrate, and iodine are present in northern Chile. The potential for further exploration and exploitation of these deposits, as well as the substantial reserves of other mineral commodities such as gypsum, anhydrite, volcanic rocks, and borates are discussed. In conclusion, industrial minerals mining in Chile has considerable potential, particularly as joint ventures between foreign and domestic companies. This has been demonstrated in the extraction of nitrates, lithium, iodine, and diatomites. However, as outlined in this paper, a number of factors need to be overcome before the true potential of the Chilean industrial minerals industry can be realized.

The prevalent use of coal combustion byproducts in engineering applications has been with Class C and Class F fly ash as admixtures in structural concrete. But, the use of fly ash and bottom ash byproducts from modern desulfurization processes is receiving increased attention. The University of Kentucky has been conducting research into civil- and mining-engineering applications of these products. The studies have included extensive investigation of the geomechanical behavior of the materials and the effect of mineralogy on this behavior. These studies indicate important mineralogical considerations in the selection of materials for a specific application and highlight the importance of quality control before and during usage on specific projects.

Integrated mining information and process control systems can reduce information delays, enhance decision making and improve the responsiveness of mining operations to, for example, variations in market conditions, mineral grades and ground conditions. This paper examines developments in the areas of: monitoring, data analysis and diagnosis,' communications systems; integrated mining support system;, and process and machine control. It concludes that the development of a comprehensive information technology plan is fundamental to the phased implementation of these technologies. In addition, hardware and software standards and concurrent digital design and simulation practices in selected manufacturing industries are examined and concluded to have relevance to the mining industry. Integrated information and process control systems will lead to emergence of the "digital mine". Such advances in mining information infrastructure as well as mining equipment will enable mining operations to shift from mass production methods to leaner production techniques. "Lean mining" aims to enhance and accelerate cash flow over the life of a mine by focusing on reduction of' throughput times; stockpiles for volume and quality control; and wastage and rework.

The extraction of gemstones, except for diamonds, continues to be a more or less handpicking type operation all over the world. However, considering the physical properties of gemstones such as density (sp.gr.), color, size, shape, luster, brilliance, reflection of light and the like in contrast to the relatively ‘dull’ physical characterization of the associated gangue minerals, it should be feasible to recover several gemstones using modern mineral processing techniques. This paper illustrates the unique physical characterization of several gemstones and suggests appropriate mineral processing techniques that could be used to recover these precious stones. Special emphasis is placed on the versatility of the Heavy Media Separation (HMS) process for processing of the gemstones. Finally, a few examples of commercially viable operations involved in the recovery of emeralds and rubies are presented.

Good morning gentlemen. I'm very pleased to be a part of this fine program for the Society of Mining Engineers. Gypsum, as many of you know, is one of the most unique minerals on earth. The very excellent presentations which you have just witnessed, revealed the geological aspects of gypsum operations. It is not our purpose this morning to pursue this subject further. Instead, we felt you would be interested in some of the uses of gypsum . . . and what the future holds for gypsum products. To help accomplish this, we're going to first show the Gypsum Association's new film, "Shape Of The Future. ' This short movie traces gypsum f ram mines and quarries to its ultimate destination in homes, schools, offices -- in virtually every type of construction. We think you'll be particularly interested in the description of gypsum's fire resistive nature.

Industries in general, and mining in particular, have become safer than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction, as required, through job redesign, work procedures and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control must be practiced in a manner consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, which include the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to: • present a set of analytical tools to analyze injury experience data. • apply these tools on a case study example, • discuss the results of the case study, and • identify the application limitations and the future research needs.

Discovered in 1896, the Sons of Gwalia orebody was initially mined by unground methods. Euring the mine's uderground operations workings reached a vertical depth of 1080 metres. The same orebody is now being mined by open cut methods. The present operation mines a broad envelope of mineralisation surrounding old stopes, whereas the original underground operation concentrated on mining high grade parts of the Gwalia Lode System. Underground mining continued up to 1963 when operations ceased due to high operating costs and the low grade of ore mined. In 1984 a new company, Sons of Gwalia NL, commenced open cut operations.

The leaching behavior of gold in ammonical solutions with iodine as an oxidant was investigated using cyclic voltammogram and Tafel polarization. The majority of the experiments were carried out at 75°C, and the results were compared with consideraton given to the equilibrium of the iodine-ammonia system. The distribution of nine iodide-containing species at various pH values in the absence and presence of ammonia were considered at three different temperatures. It was found that, with the introduction of ammonia into the system, the concentration of iodide (I-), iodine (I2) and triiodide (I3-) is increased substantially, which in turn helps the rate of gold dissolution. The apparent activation energy was found to be about 46 kJ/mole, indicating a chemical-controlled mechanism.

Zeta potential determinations and microflotation tests (with starch, sodium oleate and flotigan EDA-B) versus pH, pCa and pMg were performed with apatite and typical silicate minerals that occur in Brazilian phosphate ores: schorlomite, diopside, quartz and micas. Unlike quartz and micas, schorlomite and diopside were depressed by cornstarch during anionic flotation with sodium oleate (pH 1 9). The selectivity of the separation apatite/quartz and apatite/micas by flotation with sodium oleate was adversely affected by the presence of calcium (pCa) and magnesium (pMg) in flotation pulp. Solubility/cation exchange capacity of micas is an important source of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the system.

Everywhere you turn today there are articles on artificial intelligence and the rapid emergence of expert systems. Expert systems form a class of software that has developed as a result of the large research effort to develop computers and software that think intelligently. By definition, an expert system is a computer program that contains the knowledge component of an expert skill, can offer intelligent advice and justify its line of reasoning. Expert systems can advise people on what actions to take and when, assist in the diagnosis of the physical condition of a human patient or piece of equipment, or even take actions without human guidance, as in process control applications. Expert systems can also explain the line of reasoning behind a particular piece of advice or query for information from the user. Expert systems can be used as advisors to newcomers in any field in which mastery is attained by many years of experience. They often can provide expertise more uniformly and rapidly than human experts. Expert systems can also provide a means of documenting expert knowledge and procedures and provide a common repository for a changing knowledge base. The expert system can represent the best expertise available, thought out in the absence of pressure situations. Each of these attributes or characteristics should be helpful in improving typical concentrator control systems.
