Attempts have been made during the last three decades to establish a correlation between respirable dust dosage and the degree of progression of pneumoconiosis or silicosis amongst mine workers. Fair correlation has been possible only after the Johannesburg Pneumoconiosis Conference established mass concentration of dust in the respirable size range as the true measure of the incidence of pneumoconiosis. The author had established a good correlation between cumulative total respirable dust dosage as well as cumulative silica dosage and the category of pneumoconiosis according to ILO classification at Mufulira Copper Mine. Studies at Hutti also show a linear relationship between the average cumulative dust and silica dosage md the category of pneumoconiosis. However the maximum tolerable cumulative dust dosage for - prolonged exposure is 182 mg month/m3 - at Hutti as compared to 275 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. Similarly the maximum tolerable silica dosage for - prolonged exposure is Only 35 mg month/m3 at Hutti as compared to 55 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. The TLV for dust concentration at Hutti works out at 0.6 mg/m3 compared to 1.1 mg/m3 at Mufulira and the TLV of silica concentration at Hutti is 0.117 mg/m3 compared to 0.25 mg/m3 at Mufulira. The Hutti figure is however, closer to the TLV of 0.1 mg/m 3 recommended by ACGIH.

Introduction The English word "sedimentation" is derived from the Latin verb "sedere" meaning to sink down. As a mineral processing unit operation, sedimenta¬tion has been defined as the separation of a suspension into a supernatant clear fluid and rather dense slurry containing a higher concentration of solid (Brown, G.G. 1960). Sedimen¬tation has been historically subdivided into thickening, which has the primary purpose of increasing the solids content of one of the thickener prod¬ucts relative to the feed stream, and clarification, which has the primary purpose of removing solids from the feed stream to produce a product essentially free from particu¬late matter. There is no absolutely precise distinction between these subdivisions and in certain applica¬tions, both objectives can be accom¬plished. Major Design Factors The capacity of conventional metal¬lurgical sedimentation devices is a function of slurry throughput and its attendant settling rate. Important factors, recognized by early investigators (Taggart, 1972), which influence the settling rate of a given metallur¬gical slurry include: Feed dilution or solids-liquid weight ratio Size and shape of the particulate solids Specific gravity differential between the solids and liquid phases Presence of electrolytes and/or flocculants Pulp viscosity Slurry temperature In addition to the foregoing histor¬ical factors, recent investigators have noted (Pearse, M.J., 1977) that other parameters which may have an influence upon settling rate and, thereby, thickener performance include: Method of flocculant application Particle size distribution Particulate wetting characteristics Feeding arrangements Rake speed and type Existence of convection currents Wind disturbance Evaporation All of the above factors should be examined and the effect upon thick¬ener performance brought about by manipulating the factor over the expected operating range should be determined if performance optimization is desired.

The measurement of acoustic impedance at frequencies up to 6,400 Hz has been proposed as a diagnostic tool to yield more detailed information about lung condition. A three generation branching system of plastic Y-tubes has been constructed. The impedance of the branched system is measured by an impedance tube using the two-microphone technique. The impedance spectrum is used to calculate the reflection coefficient spectrum, which is converted to an impulse response by an inverse FFT. The area function is extracted from the impulse response by the Ware-Aki algorithm. Measurements of acoustic impedance of the branched system were made for several different end conditions of the eight terminal outlets. The outlets were either blocked with modeling clay, plastic packing material, or aluminum blocks or were unblocked. Six measurements were made of each configuration. In general, the more outlets blocked, the larger the shift to the right of the impedance magnitude peaks for frequencies above 3000 Hz. The impedance magnitude peaks for the plastic packing material were shifted in frequency to the right relative to the peaks of the other system terminations. The impedance magnitude peaks for the clay and aluminum system terminations were significantly different in magnitude but not shifted in frequency. The area functions at the end of the branched system were significantly different (a > 99%) for most of the end conditions. Area functions for the modeled branched lung systems between the end of the impedance tube and the termination outlets of the branched system were similar but distinctively different for the various end conditions. These results indicate that the two-microphone technique can sense small changes in the terminating end conditions of a rigid system of branched tubes and thus may sense impedance changes due to lung disease in the conducting airways. New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels. In Westland over 140 gold processing plants are each producing between two and six ounces a day from low-grade placers. A major gold dredging operation will soon be producing over a tonne of gold annually and other new dredges are proposed. There are still vast reserves of gold-bearing gravels in Westland and prospecting is continuing to reveal new resources. In the Reefton area there is renewed interest in gold-bearing quartz reefs which were the source of over a million ounces of gold between 1900 and 1951. New large opencast reserves are now defined.

An acceptable source of concrete aggregate is available in Kansas City in a continuous, medium bedded, slightly dipping limestone unit. Removal is accomplished in shallow depth, 12 feet to 17 feet high, room and pillar mines. The accepted empirical design spaces 20 foot pillars 60 feet on center. A portion of the 20 foot unit is left in place for roof support. Rock and soil cover is variable to 100± feet maximum. Long-term stability of these mines is affected by numerous factors, including the above mine-rock profile, ground water conditions and mining practice. Crusher-run aggregate sells at the mine for $2.20 per ton, yielding a gross income of $2.00 to $2.80 per square foot of mine. Use of mine space for real estate development requires a new perspective in mine development. Mining practices to obtain long term stabile structures can become an over-riding factor as compared with minimum production costs and maximum extraction ratios. Poorly mined areas are unusuable for secondary purposes. Development cost for lease space in less desirable mines is substantially greater than those planned for a secondary use. Real estate development in mine space involves unique engineering problems. Properly engineered developments offer singular advantages. Warehouse lease space sells for $.50 to $1.00 per square foot per year; fully developed office areas may double these values.

The win theme of this session is Unique Material Handing Systems. The theme was selected because of two major factors. 1. Accomplishments of unique character manage to attract interest regardless of their age. 2. There is much to be learned from pioneering efforts of the past as they are the stepping stones to technological development. Thus, 2-1/2 years after completion, the engineering feat of Oroville Dam still looms large let us take a close look at this project to see what made it unique. To begin with, it established a number of firsts: At 770 feet it was the highest earth fill dam in the world. At $121 million dollars, it was the largest ever United States construction project (Civil). At 80 million cubic yards it had the largest earth volume of any dam in the world. The extensive use of belt conveyors for this application had never before been tried. The use of a high capacity bucket wheel-excavator with shiftable belt conveyors had never before been utilized as a con¬tractor's tool. The principal of the "integral train" was applied most effectively whereby up to 220,000 tons of material-was transported daily some 14 miles. To achieve optimum economics a number of technical breakthroughs were necessary. The suppliers of major commercial components worked hand-in-hand with system engineers to develop new machinery necessary for the highly mobile characteristics of the systems, viz., single pulley drives delivering 2000 horsepower, 1000 horsepower right-angle shaft-mounted reducers, across the line starting of 1000 horsepower squirrel cage motors, 10 miles of steel chord conveyor belts with belt tensions up to 150,000 pounds, aircraft-type disc brakes, hydraulic take-ups, train loading at a rate of 25,000 tons per hour, automatic train indexing for rotary dumping at 10,000 tons per hour, roll-over car dumping without uncoupling cars, shifting 7500 ft. long conveyors up to 300 feet laterally without disassembly. These are some of the superlatives that have made the Oroville Dam project unique. The measure of its success is demonstrated by the results.

"Coal mine ranks No.1 among the 6 major high-risk industries, so it is no doubt that the senior managers in the coal mine bear more stress than other industry executives. The massive working stress results in serious influences on the physical and mental health of the senior managers of coal mine, which might also induce the safety risk in the coal mine. Therefore, to evaluate the senior managers’ working stress and put forward strategies of mitigating the stress is of great theoretical and practical significance in improving the physical and mental health of the senior managers and reducing the safety risk in the coal mine. The research on the working stress has been made in the western countries for almost 50 years, China began the research in the mid and late 1990s, the research is spread across multiple industries including education, medical treatment, computer and aviation. However, there is little research on the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine, so the available literatures are few. In the paper, we, based on the working stress model of Robbins and through questionnaire survey, analyze the element composition of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine; then, we construct the evaluation indicator system of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine based on the individual factor, organization factor and environment factor; after that, we determine weights of each evaluation indicators by using the improved triangular fuzzy number weight method, and set up the evaluation model of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine on the basis of the fuzzy comprehensive assessment method. At last, in accordance with the model, we evaluate and analyze the working stress for the senior managers of some typical coal mines, and diagnoses the major sources and intensities of the senior managers’ working stress, and then propose corresponding strategies of mitigating the stress."

"The East Side Access (ESA) CM005 Contract - Manhattan South Structures - consists of the installation of the waterproofing and final concrete lining for railroad tunnels, 3-Level Wye track turnout structures, segments of the Main Cavern Station, and a series of Ventilation Structures excavated beneath the existing Metro North Railroad (MNR) Grand Central Terminal. Several key team decisions made collectively by the Construction Manager (CM), Designer, and the Contractor has allowed the scheduled construction duration of 29 months to be maintained. These strategies include the use of alternate design and construction methods, including the use of pneumatically applied concrete lining and precast lining. This paper discusses these strategies, and illustrates how successful teamwork and cooperation during the execution of a large-scale construction project can lead to lowering costs, improving quality, and maintaining the overall project schedule. INTRODUCTION The East Side Access Project The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already over congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodate the NJ Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the NYCT Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The ESA Project includes building new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. (See Figure 1).The Manhattan Alignment In the Manhattan segment of the ESA Project the excavation in hard rock of tunnels, cross passages, caverns and shafts has been completed by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header. The construction of the structural concrete final lining, interior structures and fit-out of the previously excavated caverns and tunnels are currently being performed under Contract CM005 Manhattan South Structures awarded to Michels Corporation and Contract CM006 Manhattan North Structures awarded to Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspects of Contract CM005 which is the first ESA Contract in Manhattan to successfully construct concrete final linings in pre-existing excavated areas."

Good morning gentlemen. My name is George Dials, and I am [vice] president of the Mining and Reclamation Council of America (MARC). The Council is composed of various companies, individuals, and affiliated state and regional trade organizations representing nearly 3,000 companies directly and indirectly involved with surface coal mining in the United States. I am very glad to be here today to address the Society of Mining Engineers of AIMS. While I do not pretend to be an expert in either geological or geotechnical engineering, I am infinitely familiar with the provisions of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (P.L. 95-87) and the Federal regulations that have been promulgated pursuant to that Act. The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) was created by P.L. 95-87 within the responsibility for implementing the provisions of the Act and "to ensure that society and the environment are protected from the adverse effects of surface and sub-surface coal mining operations."

INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.

The mineability and coal processing costs are influenced largely by the structural and physical properties of the coal seam. The mining process involves coal cutting, pillar support, crushing, and floating. A correlation between the rank, ash content, and coal strength/stiffness is discussed. The coefficient of variability of rebound tests on the face of various coal seams are compared with those of laboratory compressive strength tests by other investigators.

Anything to do with radioactive waste disposal in these days is regarded in a very negative light and with the thought that no possible good could come of anything connected with it. However, it should be remembered that the Austrian government's disposal of some tailings from the Joachimsthal mines resulted in what was probably the most important scientific discovery of this century. In 1898 the Austrian government agreed to give a Polish research assistant working at the School of Physics in Paris one ton of tailings to enable her to carry on her research. Her meagre stipend and the lack of a research grant did not allow her to purchase the ore which was relatively expensive. The uranium oxide in it being used to colour the famous Czechoslovakian glassware. As we all know, from this ton of ore Marie Curie by her own physical labours extracted one gram of radium. When she started this research she was pregnant with her first child. Nothing of course was known at the time about the biological effects of radiation. Very shortly, of course, the acute effects such as skin burns were observed but it was some years before the chronic effects were noted. It is impossible to estimate to what cumulative amount of radiation that Marie, Pierre and their daughter Irene were exposed but it must have been enormous and it took its toll. Marie complained for many years of fatigue and exhaustion and at one point she was seriously ill with some kidney problem which was probably due to toxic effects of ingestion of uranium. She lived until she was 67, however, and died of leukemia. Her eldest child, Irene, who carried on her work, did not live as long; she died of leukemia at 57. The other daughter, Eve, related how her mother and she went on a skiing holiday not many years before her death, and how her mother at this time would swim 300 meters at a stretch. (Curie, 1937). This suppleness of limb could have been due to the anti-inflammatory action of radiation. Even today, patients in France with certain types of rheumatic conditions are treated with injections of radium, where other anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or cortisone have not worked. Conveyor equipment beyond its prime chronically suffers from a lack of understanding in today's plant environment regularly delivers more material than original designers ever expected. A case in point is a belt conveyor in a major hard rock mine/milling operation asking to bring the unit up to current standards while eliminating spillage and reducing airborne dust. The challenge was to keep the system going by revamping the system while keeping the same footprint and allowing for higher production rate. Thirty years of daily maintenance and dust collection costs have virtually disappeared by the end of this challenging upgrade.

Many reports have been written about the issues surrounding small scale miners’ challenges in Namibia; yet little has been done to address these challenges. There has been a fragmented approach to address these challenges. Various government arms and donor organizations have utilized piece meal methods in the past in trying to make improvements on the productivities across the sector, but with no meaningful success. This has led to the design and implementation of inappropriate technologies and support services for the sector. The structures of many of the semi-precious stones mining businesses are informal, with very little royalties received by the government. Miners often work informally or illegally and they fear government interference and they distrust outsiders, resulting in them withholding production information. The presence of small scale miners is quite often associated with major challenges, including poor safety and environmental management standards, the spread of communicable diseases and poor working conditions. The majority of the miners employ uncontrolled extraction techniques which damage the crystals and mineral specimens, resulting in intermediate and final products of low quality along with high wastage at the extraction stage. The vision of the Namibian government is to expand the range and value of semi-precious stones and jewelry products processed within Namibia, while curbing illicit flows of raw stones. This will simultaneously secure maximum benefit for the country. This study investigated the interventions aimed at making the small scale mining sector in Namibia sustainable. A baseline study was conducted to analyze the current situation and characterize the industry, including a SWOT analysis. Information was collected through questionnaires, interviews, consultative meetings, field visits and workshops in order to profile the sector. The baseline study results were used in developing interventions for improving artisanal and small scale mining operations. The main challenges for the Namibian semi-precious sector were identified as: factual information about raw material resources and its beneficiation are insufficient or not available, lack of skills, lack of education and access to finances, rudimentary exploration and mining practices, trading and logistics that are not functioning effectively and inadequate sector governance. One key finding of this study was that Namibia is not benefiting through value addition due partly to illicit flows of the uncut stones and to the fact that lapidary is not much pronounced to a greater extent. The following strategic interventions were identified as key in ensuring the sustainability of the small mining sector in Namibia: conducting geological assessment to identify new deposits and quantify the existing ones, improving exploration and mining practices, investing in education and training, creating an enabling environment and improving the sector governance and strengthening the sector organization and supporting the infrastructure.
